SOCAR YOLO Pass + One-Way Airport Drive Details Revealed!

SOCAR just announced the YOLO Pass promotion, and the One-Way Airport Drive feature! We got a taste of the YOLO Pass ourselves, with model Alicia Amin and comedian Kavin Jay! Here are the full details!


One-Way Airport Drive

The SOCAR One-Way Airport Drive allows you to select a SOCAR to drive to the airport, with the convenience of just dropping off the car at any valid parking zone at the airport.

No hassle of returning it back from where you first picked the car, or even parking in a special parking area! Just make sure you leave your parking token in the car!

This one-way airport service is open to KLIA 1 and KLIA 2. To let you try it out, SOCAR is offering the One-Way Airport Drive at an introductory flat one-way fee of RM50 plus the hourly rental fee for the choice of vehicle.

Cars for the SOCAR One-Way Airport Drive service can be picked up from any SOCAR one-way zone with a choice of over 10 different car models to select from including hatchbacks and SUVs.



Starting July 2018, SOCAR will select a member at random, giving them the once in a lifetime opportunity to go on a spontaneous vacation in true YOLO spirit. The only condition that members need to adhere to would be their availability to take up the YOLO Pass within one week’s notice.

If you had the chance to just pack your bags and leave for the weekend, where would you choose to go? Would you choose to visit the massive ruins of Bayon in Siem Reap, kayak at El-Nido, trek waterfalls in Bali, hitch a helicopter ride to Perak or chill by the beach at Phi-Phi island? With the YOLO Pass being now open to all members, SOCAR will be asking their members the very same question.

Functioning like a lucky draw, winners of the YOLO Pass will be provided with a complimentary round trip one-way SOCAR Pass to the airport and a surprise flight ticket to their desired destination. All members registered to the SOCAR app are eligible to be selected for the YOLO Pass as long as they have one reservation completed with the car sharing platform.

Winners to receive the ultimate YOLO Pass will be announced on the first Friday of the month and will be notified via a text message, phone call or email. The cut-off date and time to join the YOLO Pass will be the last day of every month before 11:59pm.

20 June 2018 was a night filled with adrenaline for passionate supporters of Team Germany at the NZ Wheels World Cup 2018 Live Viewing Party at SOULed Out, Hartamas.

Drapped in the colours of the German national team, over 350 avid football fans and customers of NZ Wheels were on the edge of their seats as they cheered for Team Germany during the intense Germany vs Mexico match – the first match for the home team of Mercedes-Benz.

After hitting their 1 billion ride milestone across Southeast Asia, they surveyed 500 of their customers. A majority responded that they wanted an everyday app that would complement their daily lives. Six months later, Grab is ready to share their vision of the future in this video :

Here is a summary of the services that will be forthcoming :


Grab will focus on serving the first- and last-mile needs of a multi-modal transportation system in the future. Consumers will be able to mix and match different transportation option, based on their travel preferences and budget.

With better integration of public and private transportation options in one platform, consumers can ride and pay for multiple modes of transportation through the Grab app. For example, they will be able to take an on-demand shuttle bus to the MRT, and finally take a JustGrab taxi to their final destination – arranged and paid through the app.


GrabPay will see expanded use as a mobile wallet, with consumers enjoying the benefits of going cashless, while accumulating benefits through GrabRewards. GrabPay and GrabRewards will also become revenue drivers for micro-entrepreneurs and small businesses.

Their fintech offerings will create new economic opportunities for unbanked and underbanked consumers, drivers and small businesses across Southeast Asia. Grab plans to add another 100 million micro-entrepreneurs by 2020.


The future will see most of a consumer’s daily needs for on-demand transportation, food and delivery fulfilled by a single app.


The Future Of Grab Starts Soon

Consumers in Malaysia will soon be able to start seeing the Future of Grab materialise with GrabFood and GrabPay.

GrabFood is currently being beta-tested, and will be formally launched at the end of May 2018. It will allow consumers to order and pay for their food to be delivered to their doorsteps, while enjoying GrabRewards points for every order.

Grab will also expand the use of GrabPay beyond transportation and food, turning it into a mobile wallet for use with traditional, cash-based merchants in coming months.

The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQ Showcase + Test Drive!

Mercedes-Benz showed off their Concept EQ SUV crossover at an exclusive media event. They even took it out for a short test drive, and let us have a close-up look. Here is our extensive coverage of this fully-electric concept vehicle!


The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQ Showcase

Mercedes-Benz will market future battery-electric vehicles under the brand name EQ, which stands for “Electric Intelligence” and is derived from the Mercedes-Benz brand values of “Emotion and Intelligence”.

The close-to-production concept vehicle Concept EQ marks the launch of an architecture for battery-electric vehicles across all models. Who better to explain its key features than Mark Raine of Mercedes-Benz?

New Electro Look

The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQ combines elements of an SUV with the character of a coupé, with a new electro-look – a gleaming black bonnet with a dark-tinted panoramic roof, that contrast strikingly against the alubeam silver paintwork.

The concealed windscreen wipers, cameras instead of exterior mirrors and an absence of conventional door handles, emphasise its stretched silhouette. The “Black Panel” front grille features illuminated LED optical fibres in electric blue, with matching rear lamps.

Driver-Oriented Cockpit

The driver-oriented cockpit is based on simple, touch-based controls with a new electro-look. The asymmetrical design of the instrument panel with its large, floating wide-screen display gives us a peek into the future of driver interface at Mercedes-Benz.

As the Concept EQ is devoid of conventional exterior mirrors, cameras are used to project an image of the traffic behind onto integrated displays in the doors. Both the door openers and the electric window lifters are also touch-controlled.

Avant-Garde Interior

Concept EQ comes with four individual seats, with a tailored sound experience is provided by speakers integrated into the head restraints. The side bolsters are covered in light-white leather, and rose gold pixel rain perforations. TFT monitors are integrated into the front backrests for rear-seat entertainment.

Concept EQ Power + Range

The Concept EQ is powered by two electric motors on the front and rear axles, and a lithium-ion battery embedded in the floor. With a total output of up to 300 kW in the most powerful variant, and a maximum torque of up to 700 Newton metres, Concept EQ accelerates to 100 km/h in under five seconds.

Unfortunately, Mercedes-Benz did not demonstrate the power of the electric drive in their test drive. In this video, you can see the Mercedes team took the Concept EQ for a spin at a sedate pace.

All that performance is useless without a powerful battery. The Concept EQ comes with a 70 kWh battery that gives it a range of up to 500 kilometres, as well as the latest-generation charging technologies.

It is ready for charging at home by induction or a plug point, as well as fast charging using the Combined Charging System (CCS). This European charging standard allows for fast charging with a far greater capacity than at present.

Currently, charging capacities from 50 up to sometimes 150 kW are possible. In the medium to long term, a charging capacity of even up to 300 kW is planned. This would enable sufficient power for 100 locally emission-free kilometres to be recharged within five minutes.

Driver Assistance Systems

The Concept EQ also features the latest driver assistance systems from Mercedes-Benz.

Using highly accurate maps from HERE, it is aware of the precise curve radii as well as the position and size of a roundabout. This allows the Concept EQ to automatically adjust the speed and driving dynamics to give the driver even greater comfort and relaxation.

The Concept EQ is equipped with Car-to-X technology and can exchange information with the infrastructure and other vehicles, thus taking a further step in the direction of accident prevention. It is also helpful for the driver to be informed about nearby recharging opportunities.

As soon as Concept EQ realises that the destination cannot be reached on the available battery charge, it advises the driver of appropriate options on the navigation map.

The Lamborghini Urus SUV Debuts In Malaysia!

Kuala Lumpur, 15 March 2018: Automobili Lamborghini held the APAC premiere of its Lamborghini Urus SUV in Malaysia at the Alya Sime Darby showroom. The event marked the Lamborghini Urus SUV’ first appearance in Malaysia. Its global premiere was at Lamborghini’s headquarters in Sant’Agata Bolognese in December.

Touted as the world’s first Super Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), the Lamborghini Urus carves a new niche for the brand in the luxury segment, setting new benchmarks across performance, driving dynamics and design.

The Lamborghini Urus was built upon a visionary approach that combines the Lamborghini DNA with the most versatile vehicle, the SUV. It also elevates the SUV to an unprecedented level – to be a Super SUV – with its power, performance, design, driving dynamics as well as daily usability in a range of environments.

The Lamborghini Urus features a 4.0 liter V8 twin-turbo engine delivering 650 hp (478 kW) at 6,000 rpm, maximum 6,800 rpm, and 850 Nm of maximum torque already at 2,250 rpm. With 162.7 hp/l the Urus claims one of the highest specific power outputs in its class and the best weight-to-power ratio at 3,38 kg/hp.
The Urus accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, 0-200 km/h in 12,8 seconds and with a top speed of 305 km/h it is the fastest SUV available.

Now You Can Go Car-Less With SOCAR In Malaysia!

After serving nearly three million users in South Korea with a fleet of 9000 cars in the past 5 years, SOCAR is now in Malaysia. Launched yesterday, SOCAR bridges the gap in the existing multi-flex transport system with their on-demand car sharing service.

Although SOCAR is a private service, they teamed up with the Malaysian government in their initiative to provide Malaysian commuters with an affordable option in the last leg of their journey. To support their efforts, Y.B. Dato’ Seri Hajah Nancy binti Shukri, a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, officiated the launch.


The SOCAR Car Sharing Service

To explain the concept behind the SOCAR car sharing service, is Leon Foong, CEO of SOCAR Malaysia.

The service runs off the SOCAR smartphone app, which allows you to book your car of choice for anything between 30 minutes to a whole week. The app also functions as a vehicle locater and smart key. Locking and unlocking the car is simply a matter of pressing a button in the app.


Vehicle Price & Availability

The SOCAR app is free to download from the Apple App Store, or Google Play Store. Registration is free, although you will need to pay RM 10 when you key in a credit or debit card for the first time.

The SOCAR service is only available in Kuala Lumpur at the moment. Their current fleet consists of 240 cars, made up of these four models :

  • MINI Cooper (3 Door) : RM 25 per hour
  • Honda HR-V : RM 18.90 per hour
  • Honda City : RM 9.90 per hour
  • Perodua Axia : RM 8 per hour

The fee includes insurance, petrol and reserved parking at the pick-up and drop-off point. Every vehicle comes with a free mileage allocation of 30 km per hour booked. Anything beyond that will incur a small charge of RM 0.25 per km.

In certain areas, you can request for a Door-2-Door (D2D) service for just RM 5. A SOCAR driver will drop off the car at your location, and pick it up once you’re done. Super convenient!

They also offer a Stress Free Pass, which allows you to book a car after busy working hours and return it the next day. This is perfect for corporate users who just need a convenient car to commute between the office and home.

Kuala Lumpur, January 10, 2018 – To kick-off the year, Naza Kia Malaysia today unveiled the much-awaited new non-national A-segment vehicle – the Kia Picanto 2018.

The third-generation Kia Picanto 2018 promises to be the most versatile in its class with an untypically futuristic new design, safety enhancements and better performance with advanced technological value-added features to fulfil the wanderlust of today’s millennials.

The Kia Picanto 2018 was carefully crafted with double the proportion of Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) as compared to its predecessor. This reduces its body-in-white weight by 23 kg, while improving its tensile strength by 12%. The 8-fold use of structural adhesives also increase the bodyshell’s static torsional stiffness by 32%.

For added safety, the Kia PIcanto 2018 boasts six airbags strategically placed in front and at the side of all passengers. It also has ISOFIX baby seat mounts, rear seatbelts pretensioners and active safety systems like ABS and ESC.

For tech savvy Malaysian millennials who need to stay connected at all times, the Kia Picanto 2018 has a large ‘floating’ 7.0-inch touchscreen at the centre of the dashboard which seamlessly connects to your smartphone using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with voice recognition. Kia Picanto 2018 owners can also access their smartphone functions via the Head Unit’s user interface for music, calls, messages and directions & navigation to ensure safe arrival at the travel destination.

The Kia Picanto 2018 boasts a greater luggage capacity and better space efficiency with its foldable second row seats (60:40 split), totalling up to 1,010 litres of cargo space; a vast improvement compared to its predecessor, the 2nd-generation Picanto.

An Evening With Scuderia Toro Rosso & Acronis

On the cusp of the last Malaysian F1 Grand Prix, we were invited to an evening with Scuderia Toro Rosso and Acronis. It was an opportunity for them to present Acronis Access Advanced 8.0 – an enterprise file sync and share solution that is used to share sensitive data with remote devices.

Acronis is no stranger to the automotive industry. In fact, 30% of their new enterprise customers are automative companies. Hence, it is no surprise that they chose to sponsor Scuderia Toro Rosso since August 2016. Not only does this give them greater exposure in the automotive industry, it helps them to entrench their expertise in this field.

Formula One teams like Scuderia Toro Rosso produces hundreds of gigabytes of data every race weekend, because each car has hundreds of sensors. The data they relay provide real-time information that is immediately analysed to improve performance. All of the data collected is then transmitted to their base in Faenza, Italy, where they are used to create a better car, or a better strategy for the next race.

Acronis protects all that sensitive data with their hybrid cloud data protection solutions, including the new Acronis Access Advanced 8.0. They use Acronis Access Advanced, specifically, to share confidential telemetry data and R&D documents between their Faenza base, trackside engineers and subcontractors.

With Acronis Access Advanced, we’re in full control of our data. We can track the information path and even remote-wipe a laptop, tablet or mobile device if it is lost or stolen to prevent a competitor from accessing the data. Our plan is to share sensitive data that way,” said Raffaele Boschetti, Scuderia Toro Rosso Head of IT.

Acronis took the opportunity to report that in the last year, their business grew by 25% for Acronis Backup, 20% for Acronis True Image, 100% for Acronis Backup Cloud and 200% for Acronis Access Advanced.

At Volkswagen, the Data Lab has been named the Group’s center of excellence for AI and data analysis. Specialists are exploring possibilities to use deep learning in corporate processes and in the field of mobility services. For example, they are developing new procedures for optimizing traffic flow in cities. In addition, Volkswagen has established a startup support program at its Data Lab. The program will provide technical and financial support for international startups developing machine learning and deep learning applications for the automotive industry. Together with NVIDIA, Volkswagen will be admitting five startups to the support program from this fall.

Both partners will also be launching a “Summer of Code” camp where high-performing students with qualifications in IT, mathematics or physics will have an opportunity to develop deep learning methods in teams and to implement them in a robotics environment.

The Shell Fuels With DYNAFLEX Technology Revealed!

Before the party started, Shairan Huzani Husain, the Managing Director of Shell Malaysia, gave us us a media briefing on the new Shell fuels.

Mae Ascan, Senior Scientist at Shell Global Solutions, then explained the Shell DYNAFLEX technology that her team developed.

Later, we were shown the difference the new additive package makes in cleaning up the fuel injectors and inlet valves.

Here are the key takeaway points about the new Shell fuels :

  • The Shell DYNAFLEX technology is a new additive package that is designed to keep the engines clean and protected for efficient operation.
  • The new Shell fuels maintain the same fuel formulation as their predecessor, so their energy density remains the same.
  • The additive package for petrol comes with friction-reducing molecules and cleaning molecules. to lubricate the inner piston ring, and keep the intake valves and/or fuel injectors clean.
  • The additive package for diesel comes with cleaning molecules to keep the injector nozzles clean.[adrotate group=”2″]
  • Mae Ascan and her team spent over 5 years since 2009 developing and testing the additive packages.
  • They tested it on more than 250 cars running over 3 million kilometres to refine the new formulation.
  • The new friction-reducing and cleaning molecules work better than their predecessors, but Shell will not quote a figure, because they say it varies from engine to engine.
  • The new Shell fuels do not only come with new friction-reducing and/or cleaning molecules, some also come with more of them (compared to the previous additive package).
  • The Shell FuelSave 95 petrol now comes with 20% more friction-reducing molecules.
  • The Shell V-Power 97 and V-Power Racing fuels have 3X more friction-reducing molecules than FuelSave 95, and 20% more cleaning molecules than before.



The new Shell fuels are now available at all Shell stations nationwide in Malaysia from today, at no additional cost. They are also available to industrial customers and commercial fleet owners through Shell’s B2B channels.

What Is GrabRewards?

Therefore, by taking more GrabPay rides, passengers can move upwards easily and conveniently in the tier ladder to Silver, Gold and eventually Platinum, which is for Grab’s most loyal users. This is in correlation with Grab’s effort to transform Southeast Asia from a cash-based economy to a cashless one.

All members will be able to use their points to instantly redeem RM5, RM10 and RM15 off Grab rides (the redemption value from GrabRewards is up to 8.8% from a passenger’s total spent on Grab). In addition, they can also enjoy exclusive F&B, hospitality, lifestyle and retail brands, travel, and service-related apps deals offered by GrabRewards Partners such as Tesco, Happy Fresh, myBurgerLab, Forever 21, Flower Chimp, Zalora and dahmakan.

Each year, TIME magazine’s technology editors list the year’s “best inventions that are making the world better, smarter and—in some cases—a little more fun.” This year’s list includes 25 inventions, which in addition to Goodyear’s Eagle 360 concept, includes a virtual reality headset, shoes that lace themselves, a solar roof collaboration between Tesla and SolarCity, and the Chevy Bolt electric vehicle.

“By steadily reducing the driver interaction and intervention in self-driving vehicles, tires will play an even more important role as the primary link to the road,” said Goodyear’s Chief Technical Officer Joe Zekoski. “Goodyear’s concept tires play a dual role in that future both as creative platforms to push the boundaries of conventional thinking and testbeds for next-generation technologies.”

“Although the Eagle 360 is a future concept, it represents an essential aspect of Goodyear’s innovation strategy and our vision for smart and safe mobility.”

The Goodyear Eagle 360 is a spherical-shaped design concept tire that would provide self-driving cars ultimate maneuverability, connectivity and biomimicry to increase safety.

Waze 2016 Driver Satisfaction Index Revealed

Malaysia ranks 23rd in the world on Waze 2016 Driver Satisfaction Index!

Where in the world are the best and worst places to be a driver? The 2016 Driver Satisfaction Index is made up by analyzing millions of monthly active Waze users in 38 countries and 235 metros to critique their traffic conditions, road safety, driver services, road quality, socio economic climate & Wazeyness from satisfying (10) to miserable (1).

While Waze has more than 65 million monthly active users globally in 185 countries, this report only focuses on countries and metros with more than 20,000+ monthly active users to ensure data accuracy and fair market comparisons. This data was then used to compile a global and national snapshots. Here’s what they found:

The Netherlands comes out on top with an average satisfaction score of 7.54 with France and America coming second and third respectively. Propping up the table is El Salvador who rank as the worst place to drive in the world based on this index with a satisfaction score of 2.85, they are followed closely by Guatemala and the Philippines.

Malaysia’s ranking has slipped from last year to 23rd which puts us in the lower end of the satisfaction index unfortunately, however out of all global countries, we scored highly on road quality with Malaysia posting a road quality satisfaction of 9.03, the 6th best score in the world and way and above the global average of 6.71!

On further probing it was found that Malaysia’s slip down the rankings was due to further countries being added that ranked higher. Additionally, the Wazeyness, Road Safety and Traffic Indices indicated drops from the previous year.

Automotive Innovators Motoring to NVIDIA DRIVE

Audi. BMW. Ford. Mercedes-Benz. Volvo. Some of the world’s biggest automotive names are flocking to DRIVE, our powerful engine for in-vehicle artificial intelligence.

So are a group of fast-moving, smaller innovators that are shaking up the auto industry. Companies such as ZMP, Preferred Networks and AdasWorks are using DRIVE PX to give automobiles astonishing new capabilities.

Unveiled Monday at CES 2016, in Las Vegas, DRIVE PX 2 provides supercomputer-class performance — up to 24 trillion operations per second for artificial intelligence applications — in a case the size of a shoebox.

Here’s a look at just three of the companies working with DRIVE PX:


Bringing Autonomous Driving to Taxis

Tokyo-based ZMP — which is working to help create autonomous taxis, among other projects — is using deep learning technology and NVIDIA DRIVE PX to dramatically improve accuracy of detection and decision-making algorithms for autonomous driving.

“ZMP is achieving remarkable results using deep neural networks on NVIDIA GPUs for pedestrian detection,” said Hisashi Taniguchi, CEO of ZMP. “We will expand our use of deep learning on NVIDIA GPUs to realize our driverless Robot Taxi service.”


In Gear with Toyota

Preferred Networks is one of the best-known machine learning startups in Japan. The Tokyo-based company is working closely with Toyota — which purchased a 3% stake in Preferred Networks just a few weeks ago — to give cars autonomous driving capabilities.

With the NVIDIA deep learning platform, Preferred Networks has greatly improved performance on a variety of applications, such as image recognition for automotive and surveillance cameras, automated control of robotics, and health diagnostics, according to Preferred Networks founder Daisuke Okanohara.

“The remarkable thing is that we did it all with a single NVIDIA GPU-powered deep neural network, in a very short time,” Okanohara said.


Eyes on the Road

We’re also working with AdasWorks, a Budapest-based developer of artificial intelligence-based software for automated driving, to bring the power of our GPUs to Volvo Cars.

olvo will use the NVIDIA DRIVE PX 2 deep learning-based computing platform to power a fleet of 100 Volvo XC90 SUVs that will hit public roads next year, driven by actual customers as part of the the Swedish carmaker’s Drive Me autonomous-car pilot program.

AdasWorks worked with Volvo to help create a system that processes data from multiple sensors in real time to provide 360-degree detection of lanes, vehicles, pedestrians, signs and more, enabling a variety of autopilot functions.

NVIDIA DRIVE is more than just a component automakers can bolt into their cars. It’s an end-to-end solution for deep learning that includes a wide variety of tools and technologies, such as our DIGITS software for neural network training.

Volvo XC90 To Use NVIDIA DRIVE PX 2 Computer

Jan. 5, 2016—Volvo Cars will use the NVIDIA DRIVE™ PX 2 deep learning- based computing engine to power a fleet of 100 Volvo XC90 SUVs starting to hit the road next year in the Swedish carmaker’s Drive Me autonomous car pilot programme, NVIDIA announced today.

Autonomous technology is an important contributor to Volvo’s Vision 2020 – its guiding principles for creating safer vehicles. This work has resulted in world-leading advancements in autonomous and semi-autonomous driving, and a new safety benchmark for the automotive industry.

“Our vision is that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo by the year 2020,” said Marcus Rothoff, director of the Autonomous Driving Programme at Volvo Cars. “NVIDIA’s high-performance and responsive automotive platform is an important step towards our vision and perfect for our autonomous drive programme and the Drive Me project.”


The Volvo XC90 Drive Me Project

Volvo’s Drive Me autonomous pilot programme will equip the Volvo XC90 luxury cars with the NVIDIA DRIVE PX 2 engine, which uses deep learning to navigate the complexities of driving. The cars will operate autonomously on roads around Gothenburg, the carmaker’s hometown, and semi-autonomously elsewhere.

“Volvo’s Drive Me project is the ideal application of our DRIVE PX 2 engine and deep learning,” said Rob Csongor, vice president and general manager of Automotive at NVIDIA. “We are bringing years of work by thousands of NVIDIA engineers to help Volvo achieve its safety goals and move self-driving cars from Gothenburg to the rest of the globe.”


Recognising Objects Beyond Reach of Human Algorithms

The NVIDIA DRIVE PX 2 engine enables cars to utilise deep learning – a form of artificial intelligence – to recognise objects in their environment, anticipate potential threats and navigate safely. With 8 teraflops of processing power – equivalent to 250 MacBook Pros – it processes data from multiple sensors in real time, providing 360-degree detection of lanes, vehicles, pedestrians, signs and more, to enable a variety of autopilot functions.

Recent deep-learning breakthroughs have greatly enhanced computers’ ability to perceive the outside world. Using vast amounts of data and processing power, they can write software to recognise complex objects at a level beyond the reach of human-coded algorithms.

Much deep learning work is powered by NVIDIA’s supercomputing GPUs. For example, Microsoft and Google have used GPUs to create image-recognition systems that beat a well-trained human in the ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge. For map localisation and path planning, the system can compare real-time situational awareness with a known high-definition map, enabling it to plan a safe route and drive precisely along it, adjusting to ever-changing circumstances.

DRIVE PX 2 will also perform other critical functions such as stitching camera inputs to create a complete surround-view of the car.

Because self-driving cars require massive computing resources to interpret the data from multiple sensors, most early prototypes have contained a trunk full of computers. In contrast, DRIVE PX 2, which carries out the same functions, is the size of a tablet.

NVIDIA DRIVE PX 2 AI Computer For Cars Launched

Jan. 5, 2016—Accelerating the race to autonomous cars, NVIDIA today launched NVIDIA DRIVE PX 2 – the world’s most powerful engine for in-vehicle artificial intelligence.

NVIDIA DRIVE PX 2 allows the automotive industry to use artificial intelligence to tackle the complexities inherent in autonomous driving. It utilises deep learning on NVIDIA’s most advanced GPUs for 360-degree situational awareness around the car, to determine precisely where the car is and to compute a safe, comfortable trajectory.

NVIDIA DRIVE PX 2 Deep Learning

Created to address the needs of NVIDIA’s automotive partners for an open development platform, DRIVE PX 2 provides unprecedented amounts of processing power for deep learning, equivalent to that of 100 MacBook Pros.

Its two next-generation Tegra® processors plus two next-generation discrete GPUs, based on the Pascal™ architecture, deliver up to 24 trillion deep learning operations per second, which are specialised instructions that accelerate the math used in deep learning network inference. That’s over 10 times more computational horsepower than the previous-generation product.

DRIVE PX 2’s deep learning capabilities enable it to quickly learn how to address the challenges of everyday driving, such as unexpected road debris, erratic drivers and construction zones. Deep learning also addresses numerous problem areas where traditional computer vision techniques are insufficient – such as poor weather conditions like rain, snow and fog, and difficult lighting conditions like sunrise, sunset and extreme darkness.

For general purpose floating point operations, DRIVE PX 2’s multi-precision GPU architecture is capable of up to eight trillion operations per second. That’s over four times more than the previous-generation product. This enables partners to address the full breadth of autonomous driving algorithms, including sensor fusion, localisation and path planning. It also provides high precision compute when needed for layers of deep learning networks.


Deep Learning in Self-Driving Cars

Self-driving cars use a broad spectrum of sensors to understand their surroundings. DRIVE PX 2 can process the inputs of 12 video cameras, plus lidar, radar and ultrasonic sensors. It fuses them to accurately detect objects, identify them, determine where the car is relative to the world around it, and then calculate its optimal path for safe travel.

This complex work is facilitated by NVIDIA DriveWorks™, a suite of software tools, libraries and modules that accelerates development and testing of autonomous vehicles. DriveWorks enables sensor calibration, acquisition of surround data, synchronisation, recording and then processing streams of sensor data through a complex pipeline of algorithms running on all of the DRIVE PX 2’s specialised and general-purpose processors.

Software modules are included for every aspect of the autonomous driving pipeline, from object detection, classification and segmentation to map localisation and path planning.


End-to-End Solution for Deep Learning

NVIDIA delivers an end-to-end solution – consisting of NVIDIA DIGITS™ and DRIVE PX 2 – for both training a deep neural network, as well as deploying the output of that network in a car.

DIGITS is a tool for developing, training and visualising deep neural networks that can run on any NVIDIA GPU-based system – from PCs and supercomputers to Amazon Web Services and the recently announced Facebook Big Sur Open Rack-compatible hardware. The trained neural net model runs on NVIDIA DRIVE PX 2 within the car.
