Foreign Travellers To Malaysia Must Have US$20K Insurance!

On 30 March 2022, the Ministry of Health dropped a little bombshell just days before Malaysia reopened its international borders.

Starting 1 April 2022, all foreign travellers to Malaysia must purchase COVID-19 and travel insurance with coverage of at least US$20,000 before travelling to Malaysia.

This rule applies to all foreign travellers entering Malaysia on a short-term social pass, irrespective of vaccination status.

Foreign travellers must declare their COVID-19 and travel insurance policy in the MySejahtera app, before travelling to Malaysia.

The COVID-19 and travel insurance policy will be used to pay for any quarantine, treatment or hospitalisation costs, in case they get infected with COVID-19 while in Malaysia.

Only these groups are exempted from the requirement to purchase COVID-19 and travel insurance :

  • Fully-vaccinated citizens of Singapore or Malaysia
  • Fully-vaccinated permanent residents of Singapore or Malaysia
  • Fully-vaccinated Long-term Pass Holders of Singapore or Malaysia

In other words, if you are a Singapore citizen / permanent resident / long-term pass holder who is NOT fully-vaccinated, you must purchase COVID-19 and travel insurance with coverage of at least US$20,000 before travelling to Malaysia.

These insurance exemptions apply to all those who enter Malaysia through Singapore by air, land or sea.
