Power Out: TNB Shuts Hundreds Of Substations Due To Flood!

Power went out in many areas across Malaysia, after TNB shut hundreds of power substations due to flood waters!

Here is what you need to know…

Power Out: TNB Shuts Hundreds Of Substations Due To Flood!

On 19 December 2021, TNB announced that they shut down 333 power substations due to the dire flood situation, and the risk of further flash floods.

  • Pahang : 137 substations, 17251 homes affected
  • Selangor : 117 substations, 5062 homes affected
  • Kuala Lumpur : 45 substations, 4450 homes affected
  • Negeri Sembilan : 17 substations, 284 homes affected
  • Melaka : 10 substations, 634 homes affected
  • Kelantan : 7 substations, 470 homes affected

Some electricity supply through TNB mobile generators were provided to temporary evacuation centers (PPS) that were affected by the power disruption.

TNB had some advice for consumers in flooded areas :

  • Stay away from electricity poles, installations and cables that have been submerged in flood waters, even if they are insulated.
  • Be careful when using electrical appliances in flooded premises.
  • Avoid touching electrical appliances and switches with wet or damp hands.
  • Get a wiring contractor registered with the Energy Commission to inspect wiring in flooded premises, after waters recede

TNB also asked consumers to contact the TNB Careline at 15454 if TNB power installations or infrastructure had shifted or collapsed.

TNB Power Disruption : Current List Of Affected Areas

TNB has been gradually restoring power to areas where flood waters have receded. However, power may not be restored until TNB is certain that it is safe to reactivate the substation.

As of 5 PM, 20 December 2021, TNB power substations in these areas remained shut down :

Shah Alam Toll Plaza : Still CLOSED After Flash Flood!

The Shah Alam toll plaza on the PLUS Highway remains closed, as PDRM + Bomba helped to rescue 226 victims!

Here is what you need to know…

Shah Alam Toll Plaza : Still CLOSED After Flash Flood!

At around 2 PM on 18 December 2021, a flash flood forced the PLUS Highway management to completely shut down the Shah Alam Toll Plaza and Interchange.

They also activated mandatory exits at the Subang and Seafield toll plazas to divert southbound and northbound traffic from the flooded Shah Alam toll plaza and interchange.

In addition, PLUS Highway also closed the entry lane at Bukit Raja, as well as the Setia Alam ramp to Shah Alam.

Motorists who are trapped between Setia Alam to Shah Alam, and between Subang to Shah Alam / ELITE Highway, were required to make an emergency U-turn via a temporary access that PLUS created.

19 December 2021 Update

By 7 AM, PDRM and Bomba rescuers located and transferred 226 victims who were trapped by the flash flood to other parts of the PLUS highway.

At 5:40 PM, PLUS Highway announced that the Shah Alam toll plaza will remain closed, and motorists would continue to be redirected to the Subang and Seafield toll plazas.

If you are planning to travel to, or from Shah Alam, using the PLUS Highway, you should seek an alternative route; or postpone your trip.

PLUS Highway will reopen the Shah Alam toll plaza once they confirmed it’s safe to do so.

Flash Flood Risk To Persist Until 19 December 2021

The Malaysia Meteorological Department warned that the severe rainstorm will persist at least until 19 December 2021 :

  • Dangerous (until 18 December 2021) : Selangor, Kuala Lumpur
  • Severe (until 19 December 2021) : Perak, Pahang, Selangor, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan

How Waze Weather Support Helps You Navigate Storms

Waze is ready to assist road users to reduce their inconvenience on the roads this monsoon season!

Recent flooding issues have caused considerable inconvenience to citizens, leading to the demand for immediate action to be taken. At the moment preparations before the flooding are not sufficient for citizens to deal with floods, especially when they are on the roads.

Waze, the free, real time, crowdsourced traffic and navigation app powered by drivers, has recently added new features that could help you beat rain-inducing traffic jams and delays this year.

In fact, in December last year, Kuala Lumpur Wazers helped other Wazers know of weather-related issues, sharing more than 25,456 weather-related alerts, with hail and flooding being the most reported. Subsequently, 21,197 accident alerts were submitted by Wazers, helping other Wazers stay informed and thus safer on the roads.

Waze Weather Support: Reporting Closures in Real-Time

Waze relies on more than 420,000 global, active, volunteer Map Editors to help keep Waze maps up-to-date and accurate of real time conditions, particularly during weather issues like monsoons and floods. To help you stay informed, these editors add closures and other information directly to the Waze Map – both online and in-app.
Reporting is simple; Waze users can send in notifications about closed roads due to flooding and planned event road closures on waze.com/livemap and through the reports menu. The affected road/s will be closed and immediately reflected on the app to allow road users to feel ease when travelling.

Waze Map Editor and user insights into hazards and closure don’t just help other users on the road; Waze works with municipalities worldwide who have used Waze during weather emergencies to navigate emergency vehicles on the most optimal routes.

Waze Helps You Navigate Storms

It’s always best to stay off the road during a storm, but if you must drive, here are a few Waze weather tips to navigate the roads:

[adrotate banner=”4″]
  • Plan a Drive: Before you get into the car, XX
    • To plan a drive: Menu >
  • Determine Where to Park: Use Waze “suggeted parking” to determine the closest bay to your destination, letting users beat the congestion and avoid getting wet.
    • To select a parking lot:
  • Get Situated: Be sure to dock your phone and plug it in so you can hear all audio alerts and directions.
  • Inform Family Friends of Your Arrival Time: Avoid any distracting “where are you?” calls and texts by sharing your estimated time of arrival (ETA)
    • Send ETA: ETA Panel –> Send ETA → tap friend (or click more to send via text, email or WhatsApp) → Send → tap “Go” to start drive
  • Hands-Free: To keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road, make sure hands-free and audio alerts are turned on.
    • Turn on hands-free: Menu → Settings → Voice Commands → turn on “Enable”
    • Turn on audio alerts: ETA Panel → Tap Sound Icon → Select “Sound On”
