DJI just introduced the Mavic 2 Zoom – the world’s first foldable consumer drone with optical zoom capability. Let’s check out the tech briefing by DJI’s Global Director of Communication Kevin On, and our hands-on preview of the new DJI Mavic 2 Zoom!

The Official DJI Mavic 2 Tech Briefing

The Mavic 2 Zoom is DJI’s most advanced camera drone ever built, designed for professionals, aerial photographers and content creators who want a drone with optical zoom capability.

Incorporating the iconic folding design of the Mavic Pro, the Mavic 2 Zoom features a new gimbal-stabilized camera and advanced features like Hyperlapse and ActiveTrack for easier and more dynamic storytelling.

With an impressive flight time of up to 31 minutes and a more stable video transmission system, the Mavic 2 Zoom offers an expanded flight experience for capturing even more epic shots.

The DJI Mavic 2 Zoom

The Mavic 2 Zoom is DJI’s first foldable consumer drone with optical zoom. Its camera combines a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor with a 24-48 mm lens, with 2X digital zoom. This allows it to simulate a 96 mm telephoto lens capable of capturing lossless video in full HD resolution.

Exclusive to the Mavic 2 Zoom is a new Dolly Zoom Quickshot mode that creates an incredible perspective by automatically zooming in, as it flies away from its subject. This keeps the subject the same size while the full background of the scene is revealed. This feature used to be reserved to professional cinematographers with serious resources and time to setup the shot.

4K HDR Videos With H.265 Encoding

The Mavic 2 Zoom captures 4K video with a maximum bitrate of 100 megabits per second using the H.265 compression codec. For photographers, new Enhanced High Dynamic Range capabilities blend a sequence of photos for ghost-free high dynamic range photos. This gives the Mavic 2 Zoom up to 13 stops of dynamic range.

New Intelligent Tools For Cinematic Shots

The Mavic 2 Zoom offers new intelligent flight modes for almost effortless professional-quality results. Hyperlapse produces shots that show the passing of time. You can also choose between Circle, Course Lock, Waypoint or Free mode to create timelapses with a simple tap of a button in the DJI GO 4 Mobile App:

  • Free – pilots the drone manually while shooting a Hyperlapse video.
  • Circle – automatically flies the drone in a circular pattern around a subject you select to create a timelapse video that captures the action.
  • Course Lock – keeps the camera fixed on shooting subject while the drone flies in a straight direction to create a unique perspective.
  • Waypoint – plans a complex flight path based on both altitude and GPS coordinates to capture complex shots.

ActiveTrack 2.0 offers a combination of autonomous tracking and obstacle sensing capabilities never before seen in a DJI drone. Using the main camera and the front dual vision cameras, the Mavic 2 Zoom creates a three-dimensional map of the area in front of it, and uses new trajectory algorithms to analyze motion and predict the subject’s path up to three seconds in the future.

When tracking a target, the Mavic 2 Zoom can recognize and avoid obstacles while shooting your target without interruption. It can stay on target, even if your subject momentarily goes behind an obstacle, and can track the subject at higher speeds of up to 44 mph (72 km/h).

Safer, Smarter and Stable Flight

The Mavic 2 Zoom has an upgraded FlightAutonomy system with a more powerful central processor that delivers more accurate obstacle sensing and safer flight. For the first time ever in a DJI drone, Mavic 2 Zoom has 10 sensors on all sides of the aircraft to automatically detect obstacles in its path and help prevent collisions

An improved Advanced Pilot Assistance System (APAS) allows the aircraft to analyze its surrounding environment and automatically fly around obstacles without stopping. In addition, the Mavic 2 Zoom has a Bottom Auxiliary Light that turns on automatically to ensure safe and precise landings in low-light situations.

A newly designed OcuSync 2.0 video transmission system enables a more stable connection between the drone and its remote controller. The system features stronger interference resistance and auto-switching capabilities that supports both 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz frequency bands with the capability to use different frequencies for uplink and downlink data streams.

It delivers 1080p video transmission feeds at a distance of up to 8 km, and original resolution photos in JPEG can be saved directly to your mobile device.

Aerodynamic Design and Extended Flight Time

The new redesigned and more aerodynamic airframe reduces body drag by up to 19% compared to the Mavic Pro, allowing the Mavic 2 Zoom to fly at speeds of up to 44 mph (72 km/h) in Sport mode.

Combined with a more efficient, quieter propulsion system and noise reducing propellers, the Mavic 2 Zoom has a maximum flight time of up to 31 minutes.

To ensure crisp photos and smooth, shake-free footage, the Mavic 2 Zoom houses an ultra-precise three-axis mechanical gimbal to stabilize its camera even during high-speed motion. Photos and videos can be saved directly to the drone using its 8 GB onboard storage. All DJI users have control over how their data is stored and managed, as part of DJI’s commitment to protecting its customers’ data.

A redesigned remote controller features detachable control sticks for ease of storage and portability. The Mavic 2 Zoom is compatible with DJI Goggles with the gimbal (yaw) control range up to -75°¬– +75° in Head Tracking mode, offering users a more immersive FPV flight experience.

Use Samsung Super Slow-mo To Add Drama To Any Video!

One of the key features that the Samsung Galaxy Note9 brings to the table is Super Slow-mo. It automatically adds drama to even the most mundane activity, and brings out the action when it matters the most!

In this article, we will explain how the Samsung Super Slow-mo mode works, and show you some examples of how Super Slow-mo makes our videos better!

Samsung Super Slow-mo

Super Slow-mo is a new video recording capability first introduced in the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. It allows you to record 720p video at an astounding 960 frames per second!

Here is a short video we created to showcase how easy it is to use Super Slow-mo to create really interesting and fun videos to share with your family and friends!

If that is not enough, you can check out the Super Slow-mo video we created using the Samsung Galaxy S9+ (Price Check).

These Super Slow-mo videos can be instantly edited, with a random selection from preloaded choices. Or you can use your own music / songs. You can also create a GIF from the recorded video, with three style of looping – reverse, forward or swing.

There are some caveats though – Super Slow-mo is limited to 0.4 seconds of recording and 12 seconds of playback for single Super Slow-mo shots. If you opt for the multi-shot mode, each Super Slow-mo segment in that video is limited to 0.2 seconds of recording and 6 seconds of playback.

If you are interested to know how they accomplished this, read on further…

How Is Samsung Super Slow-mo Possible?

Super Slow-mo is only made possible by a new Samsung ISOCELL image sensor, and the very fast Samsung Exynos 9810 (or Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 in the US) SoC. Hence, it is currently only available in the Samsung Galaxy Note9 (US | MY Web | MY App), the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Samsung Galaxy S9+.

Samsung ISOCELL Fast Image Sensor

Samsung used the new ISOCELL Fast SAK2L3 image sensor in the Galaxy Note9 (US | MY Web | MY App). First introduced in the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, it is a 12 MP sensor with large 1.4 µm pixels for excellent low-light performance.

The Fast designation means it comes with Dual Pixel and Super PD capabilities. It also boasts a 3-stack FRS (Fast Readout Sensor) that allows high-speed capture of Full HD video.

The Dual Pixel technology is an autofocus technology that uses the dual photodiodes in every pixel on the image sensor for phase-detection autofocus. This allows for faster and more accurate focusing, because it uses the entire image sensor for autofocus, instead of just a few dedicated pixels (usually less than 5% of the total).

Flagship-Class Processor

When paired with the Samsung Exynos 9810, the new ISOCELL Fast image sensor is said to be fast enough to record slow-motion 1080p video at 960 fps / 4K video at 120 fps.

However, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 is not fast enough, so Samsung limited the Super Slow-mo capability to ensure a consistent experience worldwide.

So now you know why you are limited to 720p videos at 960 fps, and only for up to 0.4 seconds. Even so, the Super Slow-mo capability adds a new creative tool that was not available in many other flagship smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy Note9 Low Light Performance Examined!

The new Samsung Galaxy Note9 features a unique dual aperture camera, with a mechanical aperture. It is said to deliver superior photos and videos in low-light conditions. Let’s put that claim to the test, and examine the Galaxy Note9 low light performance!

Dual Aperture Camera

The Samsung Galaxy Note9 dual aperture camera first debuted in the rare and expensive Samsung W2018 smartphone (available only in China), before Samsung introduced it in the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ smartphones.

This dual aperture camera has a mechanical aperture that lets you switch between an incredibly bright f/1.5 aperture, and the f/2.4 aperture for a deeper depth of field.

The f/1.5 aperture is the widest aperture so far in a smartphone, offering just over ⅓ stop more light than the f/1.7 aperture of the Samsung Galaxy S8‘s camera. This translates into better low-light photography with less noise.

Let’s put it to the test…

Samsung Galaxy Note9 Low Light Performance

There will be many examples of low-light conditions, so we attempted to try taking shots in near complete darkness.

In this test of the Galaxy Note9 low light performance, we took pictures of two Minions in almost complete darkness. On the left, you have a Minion in a black Darth Vader costume, and on the right, another Minion in a bright outfit.

Samsung Galaxy Note9 Low Light Example

The Samsung Galaxy Note9 (US | MY Web | MY App) did remarkably well. You can make out the helmet outline of the Darth Vader Minion, and the colour of its lightsaber.

Its white balance is also good. The white t-shirt of the Minion on the right actually appears white. And you can see that it’s holding a red ball.

H Brand Low Light Example

This is a smartphone with a 16 MP PDAF camera paired with f/2.2 lens.

You can make out the Darth Vader Minion’s lightsaber, but not its colour.

You can see the red ball in the other Minion’s hand, but its t-shirt is yellowish in colour.

X Brand Low Light Example

This is a smartphone with a 12 MP PDAF camera paired with a bright f/1.75 lens.

The Darth Vader Minion is hardly visible, and if you stare hard enough, you can barely make out its lightsaber.

The t-shirt of the Minion on the right appears whitish, but you can barely make out its right arm… and you certainly cannot see the red ball in its right hand.

Summary

[adrotate group=”2″]

The.Samsung Galaxy Note9 (US | MY Web | MY App) low light performance is obviously superior to the two other smartphones we compared it with. It is not just about how much more light its f/1.5 lens allows in, it also has a superior image sensor and image processing capability.

Its picture sample is not just brighter, it actually delivers colours that are not visible in the samples from the other two smartphones. Impressively, it managed to deliver very accurate white balance in such low-light conditions.

But wait.. that’s not all…

Samsung Galaxy Note9 Low Light Video Recording Performance!

Here is an example of a night dancing session at the Curve. The singers are on a well-lit platform, but the dancers are not lit by street lights. The Samsung Galaxy Note9 (US | MY Web | MY App) was not mounted on any gimbal.

Despite the changing brightness of the scene, the Samsung Galaxy Note9 (US | MY Web | MY App) did a great job of instantly adjusting the brightness of the subjects. This is not an easy feat when we switched focus to the dancers, because the background is much brighter.

What we ended up with is a happy balance of reasonably bright subjects without overly bright backgrounds. In fact, you can see right into the restaurant behind the dancers!

Introducing The Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VI Camera!

Sony just launched a new Cyber-shot RX100 compact camera model – the Sony RX100 VI (DSC-RX100M6). The new RX100 Mark 6, as it is known, packs an impressive ZEISS 24-200mm lens within its compact body! Let’s check it out, and see what else the Mark 6 brings to the table…

Introducing The Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VI

The Sony RX100 VI (Price Check) is the first RX100 model to introduce a high magnification zoom lens. Packing the ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 24-200 mm F2.8 – F4.5 lens, it delivers a wide zoom range for both photos and videos in a compact camera body.

The ZEISS lens is paired with a 20.1 MP Sony Exmor RS CMOS sensor for incredibly high resolution photos. The sensor features a stacked DRAM chip, and together with an upgraded Sony BIONZ X image processor, allows for 24 fps high-speed photography as well as 4K video recording with full pixel readout and no pixel binning.

The RX100 VI (Price Check) also features a Fast Hybrid AF system, with 315-point phase-detection auto-focus points on the sensor. This allows it to acquire focus in as little as 0.03 seconds, which is a world record for a 1.0 inch sensor.

High Magnification 24-200 mm Zoom Lens

A first for the Sony RX100, the new ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 24-200mmi F2.8 – F4.5 lens combines the zoom range of both 24-70mm and 70-200mm focal lengths into a compact design. This is achieved through a unique design featuring two ED (extra-low dispersion) aspherical glass elements and eight aspherical lens elements, as well as four AA (advanced aspherical) lenses.

Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilisation

The relatively large aperture throughout the zoom range helps create better bokeh effect, while reducing motion blur. To help you take better handheld shots even in low-light conditions, the RX100 VI (Price Check) has built-in Optical SteadyShot that offers image stabilisation that is equivalent to 4-stop faster shutter speed.

Fast Hybrid AF System

The Sony RX100 VI (Price Check) features a Fast Hybrid AF system that allows the camera to lock focus in as little as 0.03 seconds. It combines 315-point focal-plane phase-detection AF points (that cover approximately 65% of the sensor), and contrast-detection AF.

The RX100 VI also includes Sony’s High-density Tracking AF technology, which concentrates AF points around a subject to improve tracking and focus accuracy.  The popular Eye AF technology is also available with approximately 2X the tracking performance of the RX100 Mark 5 model.

Furthermore, the RX100 VI now comes with LCD touch focusing and touchpad focus point control for users that would like to drag their fingers to ideal focus points of their choice.

High-Speed Photography

[adrotate group=”2″]

The RX100 VI (Price Check) offers continuous high-speed shooting at up to 24 fps with full AF/AE tracking, with an impressive buffer limit of up to 233 images.  The display lag of the EVF has been substantially reduced compared to prior models.  Also, for convenience during image playback, continuously shot images can be displayed in groups instead of individual shots.

The RX100 VI also has a high speed Anti-Distortion Shutter (maximum shutter speed of up to 1/32000 second) that reduces the “rolling shutter” effect commonly experienced with fast moving subjects. It can shoot completely silently in all modes, including continuous high speed shooting, when electronic shutter is engaged.  A mechanical shutter mode is also available as well if required by the user.

4K HDR Video Capability

The Sony RX100 VI (Price Check) boasts a full pixel readout without pixel binning to ensure that even the finest details in your 4K video are captured with minimal moire and “jaggies”.

And for the first time in an RX100 camera, the RX100 VI features 4K HDR capability with its new HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profile that offers an instant HDR workflow solution.

Other professional videography features include S-Log3 / S-Gamut3, proxy recording and more. It is also able to record super slow motion videos at either 240 fps, 480 fps or 960 fps!

DJI Matrice 600 Drone Preview & Flight Demonstration

DJI launched the Matrice 600 (M600) drone in April, but an actual working unit has been hard to come by. That’s not surprising since it is an expensive drone designed for professional aerial photography and industrial applications. Thanks to DSC World, we had the opportunity to check out an operational DJI Matrice 600, and even watch photographer Eddie Putera take it out for a spin!

Yes, that’s Miss World Malaysia 2010, Nadia Heng, with the DJI Matrice 600 drone. This demonstration unit was equipped with the Ronin-MX motorised gimbal mount, which supports cameras up to 4.5 kg (10 lb) in weight. At under 1 kg (2.2 lb), the Pentax K-3 II DSLR it’s carrying is considered “lightweight”.

The DJI Matrice 600 Preview

Before the DSC World event kicked off, we had the opportunity to get a close-up preview of the DJI Matrice 600 drone, with the Ronin-MX mount. Check them out up close!

The DJI Matrice 600 is a hexacopter drone that can carry a payload of up to 6 kg (13 lb). This allows you to mount the Ronin-MX gimbal and a range of camera from Micro Four Thirds systems to the RED Epic. With 6 intelligent batteries, it has a flight time of up to 32 minutes (depending on payload weight). It even has the capability to wirelessly stream HD video at distances of up to 5 km!

The DJI Matrice 600 Flight Demonstration

Veteran drone photographer Eddie Putra then took the DJI Matrice 600 out for a flight demonstration. You will also see the smaller DJI Inspire 1 V2.0 drone streaming a live feed of the Matrice 600 in flight. Unfortunately, the Ronin-MX gimbal was not charged, so Eddie couldn’t use it to take a picture of us!

Very impressive, isn’t it? All that capability comes with a hefty price tag though.

The DJI Matrice 600 costs US$4,600 while the Ronin-MX gimbal costs US$1,600. That US$6,200 price tag does not include accessories, and of course, the camera to actually take those awesome photos and videos! 😀

They will also offer the DJI Osmo and Osmo Mobile stabilised camera systems. The DJI Osmo+ with zoom lens will come in later, sometime in November.

Eddie Putera’s DJI Drone Photography Experience

Eddie has extensive experience of using drones in his videos, and he regularly conducts workshops on drone photography and videography techniques. So this is a must watch for drone photography hobbyists and professionals… or those who plan to be one!
