Did a couple from Brooklyn steal a home that was once owned by an elderly Palestinian couple?!

Take a look at the photo that Michael Moore made viral, and find out what the FACTS really are!

 

Claim : Brooklyn Couple Stole Palestinian Couple’s Home!

People keep sharing this photo as evidence that Americans / Israelis are stealing Palestinian homes, every time there is a conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

It notably went viral in May 2021, after Michael Moore posted it on his Facebook wall, and keeps going viral every few months since then.

If someone took/stole your home right now, and moved you out because a theocracy ordered it — or what if this same theocracy bulldozed your home and tossed you out into a field and told you and your children to GTF outta here — what would YOUR response be?

What would you have the moral right to do about it? And to be perfectly clear, I don’t care if it was a Christian Fascist German soldier in 1941 forcibly removing you from your home, or an American bank in 2008 forcibly removing you and kicking you to the curb while taking your home — it’s gut-check time, folks (and yes, I mean you too, fellow pacifists):

What would you have the moral and human right and DUTY to do about it, to respond to it, to stop it? And would the rest of the world just stand by and let you suffer as it so often does?

When do we all just put a stop to this, to grind the gears of the machine to a complete halt and replace the plutocracy (we’re not a democracy), the theocracy (you’re not a democracy), and any racial, religious or corporate supremacy with TRUE democracy, FULL human rights, and love?

 

Truth : Brooklyn Couple Did NOT Steal Palestinian Couple’s Home!

This is a rather iconic photo – a Palestinian couple looking at what used to be their ancestral home, now occupied by an Israeli couple. We decided to investigate the photo, and here was what we found…

Fact #1 : The Photo Was Taken In Israel

This photo is genuine, and was taken in the village of Ijzim, about 30 minutes south of Haifa in Israel.

Just to be clear, Ijzim is not in the West Bank, or the Gaza Strip – territory under partial or full Palestinian control.

Fact #2 : The Photo Was Taken In 2020

Despite what people may say, this photo was not taken recently. It was taken and published in May 2020. The last time the elderly Palestinian couple was in Ijzim was 72 years ago.

Fact #3 : Ijzim Was Depopulated In 1948

Israel captured Ijzim during the 1948 War, and the majority of the villagers fled or were expelled during the Palestinian Nakba (Catastrophe). The Israelis quickly demolished the Arab houses to make way for permanent Jewish settlements.

Fact #4 : Palestinians No Longer Own These Lands

While the Nakba can be argued as morally wrong, this is not an uncommon practice whenever a country annexes or conquers a region.

For example, the Soviet Union expelled Germans from East Prussia after World War 2, and gave the southern part to Poland, while Lithuania was given the northern part.

Today, East Prussia is part of Poland and Lithuania – both members of the European Union and NATO. Germans who were expelled between 1945 and 1949 can visit their ancestral homes, but they cannot claim ownership over those lands.

More directly – there is no evidence the elderly Palestinian couple have any paper to prove their prior ownership of the land on which their home used to be.

Fact #5 : The House Was Not Their Home

The house in the photo is not the same house that the elderly Palestinian couple used to live in. That house, which belonged to the Palestinian man’s father, was demolished during the Nakba, and a new home was built on the land.

So it is factually wrong to say that the elderly Palestinian couple was looking at “the house they once lived in“. The house they were looking at is completely different from the house they once lived in.

That does not mean that the Palestinian couple has no right to feel hurt over their loss. It was, after all, where they once lived. But whether they are entitled to that land that they abandoned more than 70 years ago is another question altogether.

Fact #6 : It Was Part Of An Al-Jazeera Project

For those who doubt the authenticity of the photo, I can confirm that it is genuine and was taken as part of an al-Jazeera project.

In May 2020, Najwan Simri of Al Jazeera took an elderly Palestinian couple to visit their original homes and to meet their current Israeli residents. Here is the Al Jazeera video clip, as well as an English translation.

Some towns and cities inside the Green Line will become the hope of those in the diaspora. But they will also become a station of refuge for others.

Here lives a family uprooted from a nearby village. We had an appointment with Hajjeh Im Samir to accompany her there. Her [ailing] husband insisted on coming with us because he said the air of Ijzim is the best cure.

Despite its beauty, the road there seems desolate as if it gets you to the place but doesn’t take you there. Eagerly, Im Samir organizes our tour for us and tells us the names of the [Palestinian] owners of the houses.

Our first stop is God’s house. Its stones have been preserved as they were. Alone, the colors of its locked doors change each time the dryness of the seasons intensifies.

Here, Abu Samir does not stay in the car because this stop [station] is the location for which he has most longed in order to banish the other stations of his life. “This was our house, my father’s house. After the ‘48 wars, the Jews occupied it.”

After a few minutes, the residents of the house come out to [the gate]. They ask us what we want. We say, this is the owner of the house; how do you feel living in a house built on the wreckage of his house? [The answer] Frankly, I don’t feel anything. I am very happy. Living here is very enjoyable.

How strange is the distance between the owner of the house and he who is occupying it. How strange is the irony between he who has to stand inside the gate and he who must stand outside the gate. How strong Abu Samir is! For other uprooted people have refused to accompany us [on our tour]. One of them told us that he cannot bear to glimpse through the window of his father’s house a foreigner living there.

And that [glimpse] could possibly be of a strange symbol, like [what is glimpsed through the window] of a stolen [Palestinian] school converted into a temple with an emblem [the flag of Israel] that is not as old as the memory of the stones of the school.

And so, an extreme picture! It is said that the passage of time helps in forgetting, but, in the Palestinian case, it seems that the equation of time is different and that the years are merely a number. Rather, the longer the banishment of the Palestinians is, the more they remember.

Fact #7 : No Evidence The Couple Was From Brooklyn

The most authoritative source for this photo was Al Jazeera, and even they did not identify the Israeli couple, much less confirmed that they were from Brooklyn, New York City.

Despite my extensive searching, I could find no source to back up this claim. None of the earlier posts using this picture – in May to June 2020 – even mentioned that the Israeli couple were from Brooklyn.

Therefore, it is highly likely that their Brooklyn origin is completely bogus, and was added much later.

Many detractors have pointed out that this is of no importance. If that is true, then I ask – why lie about this? Why claim, without evidence, that the couple was from Brooklyn?

IMHO, it must have been important for the people who added this “Brooklyn” connection to tie this “occupation” of Palestinian land to the Americans. Hence, the necessity to claim that the Jewish couple was from the United States.

The Kalani David Death Video Scam!

Does a death video showing Hawaiian surfing champion Kalani David drowning really exist?!

A number of rumour / fake news websites have been capitalising on Hawaiian surfing prodigy, Kalani David, who tragically died out on the ocean.

They are claiming that they have the video of how he died, posting on YouTube

Truth : There Is No Kalani David Death Video!

This is another example of FAKE NEWS that some websites create for more page views and money, and here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : Kalani David Drowned While Practicing

Kalani David suffered epileptic seizures while surfing off the coast of Costa Rica, and drowned.

He was practicing on his own, and not competing in a competition. So there would not have been any video cameras to capture his death.

Fact #2 : Kalani David Death Videos Are All Fake

A number of these websites created fake YouTube videos with misleading titles, claiming to show Kalani David’s death. Terribly ghoulish and insensitive, if you ask me.

Fortunately – they are ALL fake, if you click and watch those videos. And why not? There is currently no evidence that anyone actually witnessed Kalani drowning after he suffered seizures on the waves, much less recorded it on video.

Yes, it is possible that Kalani David was surfing with other people, and someone may have been recording the session.

But even if someone actually recorded Kalani David’s death on video (instead of rushing to help), he/she would have provided the video to the Costa Rica police, and it would have been held as evidence as they are still investigating his death.

Fact #3 : Title Screens Are Intentionally Misleading

To mislead you, these fake video creators used misleading screenshots of Kalani David from years earlier, or in one case – a May 2014 photo of surfers at Salsa Brava.

The photos showing Kalani David in a hospital bed are from his August 2016 seizure, and either his December 2016 heart operation, or someone who looks like him.

It is important to note that Kalani David drowned in the ocean. He never made it to the hospital. So these are fake title screens to lure you into clicking.

To be clear – there is no video footage of Kalani David drowning.

Fact #4 : None Of Them Offered Any Evidence

No reputable media outlet even mentioned that his death was witnessed, much less recorded on video for our ghoulish entertainment.

Yet, these no-name websites out of India and Pakistan somehow managed to get their grubby little hands on the “death video” of Kalani David?

None of those websites claiming to show the Kalani David death video offered anything remotely close to “evidence”. Their articles will mention “death video” for SEO reasons, but offer nothing else.

Fact #5 : This Is Just Another Example Of Celebrity Fake News

This is yet another example of fake news created by rumour and fake news blogs to drive traffic and increase page views for ad money. Here are examples of other celebrity fake news that we debunked earlier:

Headlining its top-of-the-line quad-camera system is a Dual Pixel camera, which is built around the 108 MP ISOCELL HM3 sensor, and optically-stabilised lens with a large f/1.8 aperture.

In this article, we are going to take a look at the video recording capability of Galaxy S22 Ultra, and show you just how well its quad-camera system performs!

 

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Video Recording Performance

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra’s super-high resolution 108 MP main camera can take up to 8K videos, if you want to. But in reality – most people are not going to bother with 8K video recording, at least for now.

Very few televisions and devices support 8K video playback, and even the S22 Ultra will downsample the 8K video when playing back on its 3K display.

1080p and 4K videos are what the Galaxy S22 Ultra does best, thanks to its support for 60 fps recording and combination of optical image stabilisation and advanced electronic image stabilisation.

1080p Video Sample : Concubine Lane @ Ipoh

This video sample was taken at the famous Concubine Lane in Ipoh, which is crowded and really great to test the camera out.

In this video sample, you can see just how smooth and stable the video is at 60 fps, even with so much shaking and jostling.

4K Video Sample : Concubine Lane @ Ipoh

When we switched to 4K, the video was remarkably stable, even while we walk through the crowd, and pan around Concubine Lane.

You should also note the lack of wind noise, which is fantastic. You won’t need to use a third-party microphone with a dead cat with this phone!

 

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Video Zoom Capability

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra also supports multiple zoom levels – up to 20X zoom at 1080p, and up to 10X zoom at 4K.

Its ultra-wide camera lets you record with a wider 0.6X zoom, while its 3X zoom and 10X zoom cameras allow for extended optical zoom capabilities.

1080p Zoom Demonstration

At 1080p, you can record videos from 0.6X zoom up to 20X zoom – which offers much wider range than competing smartphones.

The best image quality was seen at up to 10X zoom, while image stabilisation was best at up to 4X zoom, and still pretty good at 10X zoom.

While 20X zoom has pretty decent image quality, it is not as sharp as at 10X or lower zoom. Colours also appear more washed out at 20X.

4K Zoom Demonstration

You can record 4K videos from 0.6X zoom up to 10X zoom. – which is narrower than recording 1080p video.

For best image quality, limit your zoom up to 3X while recording 4K video. While image stabilisation was pretty good at 10X zoom, the image isn’t sharp and colours appear washed out.

 

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Video Recording Performance Summary

If you ignore the 8K hype, you will realise that the Galaxy S22 Ultra offers truly excellent 4K and 1080p video recording capabilities.

You should buy the Galaxy S22 Ultra for its advanced optical and electronic image stabilisation for super-stable recording on-the-move.

You should also buy the Galaxy S22 Ultra for its wide zoom range of 0.6X to 10X when recording 1080p videos, or 0.6X to 3X when recording 4K videos.

These are the critical video recording features that will give you greater flexibility and super stable videos, without the need to use a gimbal.

While not showcased in our videos, the Galaxy S22 Ultra also supports Audio Zoom, focusing the audio recording as you zoom into a scene. That can be really helpful in isolating audio from the subject from background noise.

These features are not new – they have been part of the Samsung Galaxy S and Note series for a few years now. Samsung just keeps improving them, which is why we keep using Galaxy S smartphones as our primary video recording device.

vivo Tokyo Mobile Imaging R&D Centre : A Quick History

Back in 2017, the smartphone market was growing rapidly with intense competition amongst the many brands. It was then that vivo decided to differentiate itself from the pack by establishing a global R&D initiative.

The vision behind vivo’s strategy was to leverage valuable expert resources in different parts of the world to conduct different R&D work.

One of the steps they took was to establish the vivo Tokyo R&D centre to focus on mobile imaging technologies.

vivo chose Tokyo for its mobile imaging R&D centre because there is already a robust and mature imaging industry in Japan, with over 100 years of development history.

The first vivo Tokyo R&D centre was established in Shimbashi back in 2019, and when the team grew, they shifted to Gochome, Chuo-ku in the central area of Tokyo.

This new R&D centre not only works on mobile imaging technologies like the signature vivo gimbal smartphone camera, but also more niche areas like car cameras, sports cameras, and even industrial cameras.

Coordinating R&D centres in different parts of the world has its challenges. For instance, prototypes need to fit into products manufactured in China during the transition from R&D to mass production.

This requires continuous testing and improvement during the R&D process, which is time-consuming because of the physical distance between Japan and China.

In addition, Japan and China follow different hardware specifications, which is why the vivo Tokyo centre uses locally unique resources for their R&D projects.

The geographical barrier also makes it hard for R&D centres in different parts of the world to gain the latest insights into consumer demand in different markets. Hence, vivo R&D teams across the world exchange valuable insights through online discussions.

The planning and product team in China will first analyse the future trends of smartphone imaging based on user feedback, before sharing their insights with the Tokyo R&D team.

Currently, the vivo team believes that “miniaturised and integrated” will be a major direction for imaging hardware development in the future.

Camera lenses now are generally assembled. In future, they might all be integrated into one piece, with sensors that are more sensitive and faster.

This is based on customer feedback that they favour high resolution imaging, but also prefer a smaller lens module.

vivo X70 Gimbal Smartphones : What You Need To Know!

vivo just launched their X70 series of professional photography flagship smartphones, with two models – the X70 and the X70 Pro.

Both models come with ZEISS optics for their cameras, and a unique Ultra-Sensing Gimbal Camera, to allow users to capture the best possible photos and videos, even in the most challenging conditions.

Here is what you need to know about the new vivo X70 series smartphones…

Large AMOLED Display

Both the vivo X70 and X70 Pro come with a large 6.56-inch AMOLED display, with a resolution of 1080 x 2376 pixels.

They both support a 120 Hz refresh rate and a 240 Hz response rate, as well as HDR10+ support and Hi-Rest certification.

There is a subtle difference between the two models though – the vivo X70 display has a 2.5D edge, while the Pro version has a 3D curved edge.

Performance

Both models are powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 – a 5G mobile SoC built on the 6 nm process, with eight processor cores that consists of :

  • a high-performance A78 core running at 3 GHz,
  • three sustained-performance cores running at 2.6 GHz, and
  • four high-efficiency A55 cores running at 2 GHz.

In addition to its 8 processor cores, it has a 9-core Arm Mali-G77 MC9 GPU, and a 6-core MediaTek APU 3.0 AI processor.

RAM + Storage

The vivo V70 comes with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, while the Pro version comes with a whopping 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage.

Even though they both come with a lot of memory, they support Extended RAM 2.0 – giving them additional 4 GB of memory on call!

There is no option to upgrade storage through a microSD card, but they both come with more than enough storage for most users, and most importantly – it’s super fast UFS 3.1 flash storage!

Cameras Co-Engineered With ZEISS

Both models have a high-resolution 32 MP front camera, with a triple camera system for the X70 and a quad camera system for the X70 Pro.

Both camera systems were co-engineered with ZEISS and feature lenses with ZEISS T* coating to reduce unwanted light flares, ghosting, stray light and other image artifacts.

The pièce de résistance of both models is the unique Ultra-Sensing Gimbal Camera, which is coupled with the Gimbal Stabilisation 3.0 technology, to let you capture steady images and video even in the most challenging conditions.

They also support VIS 5-Axis Ultra Stable Video technology, which integrates enhanced optical image stabilisation (OIS) with electronic image stabilisation (EIS) to aggressively stabilise the X/Y-axis as well as Z-axis rotation for silky-smooth video.

Rounding that up is a slew of AI-enhanced photography and videography technologies, like Real-Time Extreme Night Vision, Super Night Video, Pure Night View, Pro Cinematic Mode and more.

Battery + Charging

The vivo X70 Pro and X70 come with large batteries – 4,450 mAh and 4,400 mAh capacities respectively, for a long battery life.

On top of that, they both come with a USB charger in-the-box, which supports 44W FlashCharge for extremely fast charging.

vivo V1 Custom Imaging Chip : What You Need To Know!

According to Hu Baishan, vivo Executive Vice-President and COO, the V1 is a fully-customised integrated circuit chip that is designed to deliver leading-edge visual quality for both imaging and video applications.

The vivo V1 imaging chip will be used to optimise smartphone application scenarios like “viewfinder look and video recording“, according to Hu.

In these two leaked pictures, you can see how several vivo V1 chips sitting in their trays.

From what we understand, the vivo V1 custom imaging chip will first appear in the upcoming vivo X70 series of flagship smartphones.

Using a custom ISP (image signal processor) chip will allow vivo to offer faster processing and better image quality than what’s readily available through the integrated ISP offered by mobile SoCs.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra : Dual Zoom + Audio Zoom Review

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra boasts a new Dual Zoom capability, as well as Audio Zoom, for improved video recording.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra : Dual Zoom + Audio Zoom

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra comes with an improved quad-camera system, that consists of :

  • a 108 MP main camera, with an f/1.8 aperture
  • a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, with an f/2.2 aperture
  • a 10 MP telephoto camera, with an f/2.4 aperture, and 3X optical zoom, and
  • a 10 MP periscope telephoto camera, with an f/4.9 aperture, and 10X optical zoom

For the first time, it has two 10 MP telephoto cameras – one with 3X optical zoom, and a periscope camera with 10X optical zoom.

The Dual Zoom capability refers to the ability to smoothly switch from the 3X telephoto camera, to the 10X periscope camera, with AI-enhanced Super Resolution to deliver sharper, stabilised video.

Its Audio Zoom capability isn’t new, having been first introduced in the Galaxy S10 series. It uses the triple microphones to change the range of sound captured as you “zoom” into the action. This lets you “focus” on the subject that you are recording, and reducing ambient noise.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra also comes with other improvements like :

  • Improved 8K Snap, that lets you capture clear images from your 8K video footage
  • Super Steady video now supports 60 fps video recording
  • Single Take lets you capture a variety of still and video formats with a single tap.
    It is now enhanced with new pro-style settings like Highlight Video and Dynamic Slow-Mo
  • New Director’s View that lets you see, switch and select the best shot… LIVE!

The Galaxy S21 Ultra is also the first Samsung smartphone to allow you to shoot in 4K at 60 fps on all front and rear cameras!

 

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra : Dual Zoom + Audio Zoom Examined!

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra can zoom at up to 20X while recording 1080p video at up to 60 fps, and 4K video at up to 30 fps.

So we recorded a series of handheld video clips in both 1080p at 60 fps, and 4K at 30 fps, to test its Dual Zoom and Audio Zoom capabilities.

By default, the Samsung Camera app offers zoom presets of 0.6X, 1.0X, 3.0X and 10X.

You can use pinch-to-zoom further, or you can do a long press on any of the presets to get access to a wider range of zoom presets – 0.6X, 1.0X, 2.0X, 4.0X, 10X and 20X.

Dual Zoom + Audio Zoom @ 1080p (60 fps)

At 1080p, handheld image stabilisation was very good, except at 20X zoom where you can see some visible handshake.

That said, the handshake at 20X is really quite minimal, compared to older stabilised cameras and even worse, unstabilised cameras!

The best test of Audio Zoom can be heard in the Chinese New Year concourse clip. Notice how the music from the concourse gets louder as we zoom in, and fade out as we zoom out.

Dual Zoom + Audio Zoom @ 4K (30 fps)

At 4K, handheld image stabilisation was very good at up to 4X, and pretty good at 10X. At 20X zoom, there was visible handshake, but it was really quite acceptable.

Of course, for best image quality, you should stick to 10X zoom. 20X at 4K looks a little blur, so the extra resolution at 4K doesn’t help at all.

Another good example of Audio Zoom is at the playground. Even though it’s empty, the bird chirps get louder as we zoom in, and fade out as we zoom out.

 

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra : Dual Zoom + Audio Zoom Verdict!

Dual Zoom is just a fancy name for the ability to switch between the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s two telephoto lenses.

Naturally, you want to use the 3X telephoto camera with its much wider aperture, and only switch to the 10X periscope lens with its narrower aperture when you need the extra reach.

Its AI-enhanced Super Resolution feature enhances image quality in the zoom gap between 3X optical zoom and 10X optical zoom.

While most people are not aware of Audio Zoom, it can greatly enhance the overall audio quality of the video, by focusing on subject in focus.

Thanks to these two features, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra arguably delivers the best video recording capabilities for a smartphone today.

Nokia 3.4 Camera New Year Failure : How To Fix It?

Nokia 3.4 users received a New Year surprise, when its camera stopped working from New Year 2021 onwards!

Find out what happened, and the two workarounds you can try!

 

Nokia 3.4 Camera Started Crashing On New Year 2021!

Many Nokia 3.4 users are complaining that their camera stopped working around New Year 2021 – either on the eve – 31 December 2020, or New Year’s Day – 1 January 2021.

Specifically, the Nokia camera app would crash within a second of opening it. Those who managed to take a shot before it crashed would only get a photo of a grey square.

Like the camera failures affecting the Nokia 8.3 5G, the problem partly due to the recent firmware updates, but the problem only manifested around New Year 2021.

In fact, it will affect brand new Nokia 3.4 phones that were sold and opened up on and after 1 January 2021.

 

Nokia 3.4 Camera New Year Bug Workarounds

Restarting the phone won’t help, and even a soft reset or hard reset won’t work.

It appears that the Nokia 3.4 camera malfunction is a date bug (like the famous Y2K or Millennium Bug) affecting their Camera app version 97.10.1400.01.

Nokia says they are working on a fix, but until they release a working update, here are two ways to fix the Nokia 3.4 camera failure.

Use A Third-Party App

The Nokia 3.4 camera is still functioning – it’s just their Camera app that’s broken.

So you can use a messaging app like WhatsApp or Telegram to take photos and videos.

However, you may not get the full resolution or quality since these apps use a much lower photo and video resolution to reduce file size.

The best option is to use a third-party camera app like Open Camera or the Google Camera port.

Change The Date

Another way is to change the date on your affected Nokia smartphone :

  1. Go to Settings > System > Date & time
  2. Turn off Network-Provided Date & Time.
  3. Change the date to either :
    a) 30 December 2020 or earlier
    b) 2 January 2021 or later

After that, the Nokia camera app will run properly. But it won’t do to keep running with the wrong date.

  1. Open and then close the Camera app
  2. Go to Settings > System > Date & time
  3. Turn on Network-Provided Date & Time.

This should let you use the Nokia 3.4 smartphone with the proper date, and a usable camera app, albeit with Scene Detection disabled.

Nokia 8.3 5G Camera Crashes On New Year 2021!

Many Nokia 8.3 5G users are complaining that their camera stopped working on around New Year 2021 – either on the eve – 31 December 2020, or New Year’s Day – 1 January 2021.

Specifically, the Nokia camera app would crash within a second of opening it. Those who managed to take a shot before it crashed would only get a photo of a grey square.

At first, they thought it might have been the October or December 2020 update, but oddly enough – the camera only failed on either on 31 December 2020, or 1 January 2021.

Two different people also reported that they bought the Nokia 8.3 5G on 31 December 2020 and 1 January 2021, and the camera on both phones didn’t work either.

Restarting the phone or soft-resetting it won’t work. Even a hard reset that a German user, Gabriel Steinecker, tried did NOT work.

Eventually, it was discovered that the Nokia 8.3 5G’s physical camera was working fine. It was the Nokia camera app that did not work. Third party apps like WhatsApp and Telegram, for example, could still take photos and videos.

 

Nokia 8.3 5G Camera New Year Bug Workarounds

The Nokia 8.3 5G camera malfunction seems to be a date bug (like the famous Y2K or Millennium Bug) affecting their Camera app version 97.10.1400.01.

In fact, it could be affecting more than just Nokia 8.3 5G users. The problem also affects the Nokia 3.4 smartphone.

Nikon (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. today announced that they will cease operations on 1 January 2021, with their last business day on 31 December 2020.

That marks the end of almost 19 years of presence in Malaysia – Nikon Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. was established in April 2001.

The writing has been on the wall for sometime now… the photography market has been hammered by the ubiquitousness of smartphone cameras, and even mirrorless cameras cannot stop the haemorrhage.

As sad as it may be for Nikon users, it comes to no surprise that Nikon Malaysia has decided to call it quits.

 

Two Distributors Take Over Nikon Business In Malaysia

Don’t worry if you are a Nikon fan. They are not leaving you high and dry.

You will still be able to purchase Nikon cameras and lenses, and get your photography gear serviced.

YouTube : Shorter Videos Now Eligible For Mid-Roll Ads!

YouTube just announced that shorter videos will not only be eligible for mid-roll ads, it will be turned on automatically!

 

YouTube Mid-Roll Ads : What Are They?

YouTube mid-roll ads are basically advertisements that load in the middle of a video, rather than at the beginning.

On desktops, you will see a 5 second countdown before a mid-roll ad appears.

On other platforms, you will see yellow markets in the video progress bar where such an ad may show up.

 

YouTube Mid-Roll Ads : What’s Changed?

In the past, YouTube only allowed mid-roll ads to be added to videos longer than 10 minutes.

This encouraged content creators to create longer videos, sometimes unnecessarily extending them to qualify for mid-roll ads.

Starting late July 2020, YouTube will reduce the threshold from 10 minutes to just 8 minutes. All videos longer than 8 minutes will be eligible for mid-roll ads.

On top of that, YouTube will automatically turn mid-roll ads for all qualifying videos, even those that opted out in the past.

By default, YouTube will use machine learning to find the most natural breaks in your videos to add these advertisements, but you can also adjust their placements manually.

Those who prefer not to participate can opt-out in YouTube Studio by 27 July 2020.

 

YouTube Mid-Roll Ads : What Does This Mean?

Content creators will be glad because it means they can better monetise their shorter videos.

On top of that, they are no longer incentivised to unnecessarily extend their videos just to qualify for these advertisements.

For viewers, this should hopefully result in better quality videos, in exchange for mid-roll advertisements that could interrupt your enjoyment of those videos.

But seriously – you can just skip the ads (if you really don’t want to support content creators), or opt for YouTube Premium.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra : 8K Video Goes Mainstream!

One of the least talked-about features in the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is its 8K video recording capability.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra : 8K Video Goes Mainstream!

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is the big brother of the Samsung Galaxy S20 family, the other two being the Galaxy S20 Plus and the Galaxy S20.

All three models can actually record 8K videos with a resolution of 7680 x 4320 pixels at 24 frames per second.

However, there are some limitations when you record 8K videos on the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra | S20 Plus | S20 smartphones :

  • each video clip is limited to 5 minutes
  • electronic image stabilisation (EIS) will be disabled

The time limit is both necessary because of the 4GB file size limit, as well as to avoid damage to the sensor – it gets really hot when you record 8K videos.

And while EIS cannot be enabled – the amount of processing power required is just too much – you can still rely on the optical image stabilisation (OIS) provided by the lens.

 

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Video Samples : 8K vs 4K vs 1080p

We prepared six Galaxy S20 Ultra video samples to showcase the differences in video recording quality. Check them out :

Video Sample #1 : Blues Band (1080p)

The image quality at 1080p is exceptional, with good control of the exposure. Image stabilisation by the main camera was good, but there was some shakiness when we switched to the telephoto camera.

Its audio quality and noise cancellation were also very good. Even though it was breezy that day, you can’t hear any wind noise.

Video Sample #2 : Blues Band (4K)

This is our favourite video recording resolution. Good image quality at a high resolution, with good exposure.

Video Sample #3 : Blues Band (8K)

The detail at 8K was exceptional, and the image stabilisation (only optical) was better than we expected. But we noticed some autofocus issues – you can see some seeking even though no one is moving.

Video Sample #4 : Street Market (1080p)

In this test of its image stabilisation capabilities, you can see that at 1080p, the S20 Ultra does a very good job of cancelling out hand shake while walking.

Video Sample #5 : Street Market (4K)

Image stabilisation at 4K was very good too. Very smooth video even while walking.

Video Sample #6 : Street Market (8K)

At 8K, there is some noticeable jerkiness, but thanks to OIS, it actually turned out better than we expected.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Camera Technologies : What’s New?

The new Samsung Galaxy S20 introduces a brand new camera system, with new high-resolution sensors and a new Space Zoom technology.

Let’s take a look at the new camera technologies that Samsung just introduced in their Galaxy S20 family of smartphones!

 

Samsung Galaxy S20 Super Resolution : 108MP / 64MP

The Samsung Galaxy S20 smartphones come with new super resolution sensors :

These super high resolution sensors allow you to zoom in, and crop a section you want, without losing any detail in that picture!

Samsung did not just increase the number of pixels on their sensors, they also greatly increased the sensor size. This increases the amount of light each pixel receives, so that they will deliver better image quality, even in low-light conditions.

 

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Camera : 108MP Sensor Modes

The 108MP sensor in the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra can switch between two modes – Nona-Binning and Re-Mosaic.

Nona-Binning for better low-light performance

Also known as 3×3 binning, nona-binning merges nine pixels into one.

This gives you a 12 MP picture instead of a 108 MP picture, but each pixel will receive 9X more light for much better clarity in low-light conditions!

Re-Mosaic for more detailed images

This is the default mode when there is good lighting.

The Re-Mosaic algorithm remaps the pixels into a conventional RGB pattern to produce more details in the image.

 

Samsung Galaxy S20 Camera : Space Zoom Technology

The Samsung Space Zoom Technology combines their new Hybrid Optic Zoom, with AI multi-frame processing enhancements to give you incredible zoom ranges.

  • Hybrid Optic Zoom : longer zoom range by cropping their new super resolution sensor, and pairing it with new zoom lens
  • AI Multi-Frame Processing : better image quality of digitally-zoomed images through AI algorithms

The Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+ both offer 3x Hybrid Optic Zoom, with 30x Space Zoom.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra, on the other hand, offers 10x Hybrid Optic Zoom, with 100x Space Zoom!

 

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Camera : Folded Lens + 48MP Sensor

We should give a special mention to the Galaxy S20 Ultra, which combines a folded lens design and a 48 MP sensor to deliver 10x Hybrid Optic Zoom.

That can be extended to 100X using AI multi-frame processing, which reduces hand shaking and quality loss at such high zoom levels.

Dual-Mode 48MP Sensor

The telephoto camera on the Galaxy S20 Ultra has a 48MP sensor, which switches between tetra-binning and re-mosaic modes, depending on the shooting conditions and zoom ratio.

Its tetra-binning mode combines 4 pixels into 1 for significantly better low-light performance.

Its re-mosaic mode rearranges the RGB pixels, allowing for a sensor crop to deliver the 10x Hybrid Optic Zoom.

Folded Lens

The folded lens design allows the Galaxy S20 Ultra to deliver a wider zoom range into a very limited space. The lens lays flat, and is positioned at the bottom of the camera.

Light from the aperture is redirected by a prism into the lens, refracting at a 90-degree angle to increase the focal length.

How HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro Captures 7680 FPS Video!

HUAWEI shared with us four new short video samples to showcase the Mate 30 Pro‘s ability to deliver 7680 fps ultra-slow motion video.

Together with two additional videos they released earlier, we created this video showcase of their 7680 fps slow-motion capability.

 

How HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro Captures 7680 FPS Video!

It would be impossible for a human being to react fast enough to capture the “right moment”, so when you start recording, its NPU (Neural Processing Unit) analyses a second of video to determine the best time start recording at 7680 fps.

This process of analysing the video data and triggering at the right moment is a very strenuous process, using an AI algorithm and about 2 GB of RAM.

The HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro then captures 945 frames in 120 milliseconds. That approximately 3.5 GB worth of data is then expanded into 32 seconds of 30 fps ultra-slow motion video.

As you can tell, recording video at 7680 fps (frames per second) takes A LOT of processing power.

Even with its powerful Kirin 990 processor, the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro can only do it at the 720p resolution, and only for a fleeting 0.12 seconds.

So if you are wondering when will you be able to record 7680 fps video at 1080p or 4K resolution, or for longer than 0.12 seconds… we did some calculations, and a future smartphone must be capable of processing all this data in an instant :

This is why the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro’s new ability to record 7680 fps video at 720p is, frankly, freaking amazing. The most other flagship smartphones can do is 960 fps at 720p.

HUAWEI shared with us two short videos to showcase the Mate 30 Pro‘s ability to deliver 7680 fps ultra-slow motion video, as well as ultra-low light video recording at ISO 25600.

How The HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro Delivers 7680 FPS Video!

The HUAWEI Mate 30 High ISO Capability

In low light conditions, it is possible to increase the camera’s ISO value – basically boosting the signal from its image sensor.

While this effectively increases the sensitivity of the image sensor to light hitting its photodiodes, it can increase noise. Therefore, the ability to increase ISO levels without introducing significant noise is highly desirable.

The HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro boasts the ability to increase ISO levels up to ISO 51200, which is incredibly high. What this means is you have greater capability to take photos and record videos in low-light conditions.

Sony IMX586 vs Sony IMX582 Comparison – Which Is Better?

With the launch of the Xiaomi Mi 9T / Redmi K20 and the Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro / Redmi K20 Pro, you may be wondering – what’s the difference between the Sony IMX586 and Sony IMX582 image sensors?

At first glance, they are both 48 MP image sensors with pretty much the same specifications. But there is one key difference. Find out what it is, and if it matters to you!

 

The Sony IMX586 Image Sensor

Sony makes many of the industry’s best image sensors, and their IMX585 is no exception.

First announced on 23 July 2018, the Sony IMX586 was the world’s first image sensor to feature an ultra-small 0.8 μm pixel size.

It is a stacked CMOS image sensor, that uses a Quad Bayer colour filter array – where adjacent 2×2 pixels are in the same colour.

In low-light conditions, signals from four adjacent pixels to be combined into a Super Pixel with the effective pixel size of 1.6 μm pixels. This allows for significantly brighter low-light photos, albeit at 12 MP.

At half an inch, or 8 mm, it is considered a relatively large sensor. Shipping in September 2018, it has so far been used in the Xiaomi Mi 9, the Redmi Note 7 Pro, ASUS 6Z, OnePlus 7 Pro and now, the Mi 9T Pro / K20 Pro.

 

The Sony IMX582 Image Sensor

The Sony IMX582, on the other hand, is a complete mystery.

Until its introduction in the Xiaomi Mi 9T / Redmi K20, no one has ever heard of it, much less seen it used in any smartphone.

At first glance, it is identical to the Sony IMX586 – a stacked CMOS image sensor with 48 million 0.8 μm pixels that can be combined into 12 million 1.6 μm pixels.

However, we can confirm that the Sony IMX582 is different from the IMX586 in at least one aspect – its 4K video recording capability.

The Sony IMX586 is capable of recording 4K videos at up to 90 fps, but the Sony IMX582 is limited to 4K videos at just 30 fps.

For your convenience, we summarise their specifications in this table :

Now, many other websites are saying that the IMX586 can record 4K videos only up to 60 fps, but they are wrong.

They most likely got confused by Xiaomi’s statement that the IMX586 was limited to 4K @ 60 fps in Mi 9 and Mi 9T Pro / K20 Pro smartphones.

The fact is Sony rated the IMX586 for 4K @ 90 fps, but Xiaomi limits 4K video recording to 60 fps in their smartphones.

 

So Which Is Better – IMX586 or IMX582?

The Sony IMX586 is the superior sensor, by virtue of being able to record 4K video at higher frame rates.

But that feature is moot for many users, because most users do not record 4K videos at 60 fps, never mind 90 fps…

Unless you want to record high speed 4K video, both sensors are practically the same.

In fact, we believe that the IMX582 is really nothing more than the IMX586 with a throttled 4K recording capability.

Super Night Mode

The Super Night Mode teaser video shows how the HUAWEI P30 smartphone is able to capture the subject with just a minute glow from a firefly.

Insect rights aside, the video conveys that the HUAWEI P30 camera only requires a little light to capture the lady with great detail and accurate colours, even though the room is almost completely dark.

Super Zoom

We had already seen three sets of Super Zoom photos, but this teaser video reminds us that Super Zoom is also very useful for recording videos of faraway subjects.

Video recording will never be the same again with Super Zoom capability, especially if rumours of 10X optical zoom are true!

Dual View

This is new – the ability to record a video from two cameras at the same time! It’s like the Nokia Dual-Sight Bothie, but instead of recording from the front and rear cameras, Dual View records from two rear cameras.

The teaser video shows the creative possibility of combining two scenes – far and close – simultaneously. From what we can see, Dual View captures and combines video footage from the telephoto and main cameras.

The OPPO R17 Pro Cameras

The OPPO R17 Pro (MY | US) has a 25 MP front camera with a Sony IMX576 sensor and f/2.0 aperture.

In the back, it boasts a new dual camera setup that is similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy Note9 and Galaxy S9+.

The main rear camera is a 12 MP Sony IMX362 shooter with dual-aperture – f/1.5 and f/2.4 – exactly like the dual-aperture camera of the Samsung Galaxy Note9 and Galaxy S9+ smartphones.

Its secondary rear camera though is a higher resolution 20 MP telephoto camera with f/2.6 aperture.

How We Tested In Sydney + The Blue Mountains

While many Instagrammers and social media influencers touch up their photos to create more stunning posts, we wanted to show you the OPPO R17 Pro (MY | US) can deliver without editing or filters.

This is important because a good graphics editor can turn even a terrible picture into a work of art. But how many of us are good at editing photos, or even have the time to do it?

So we intentionally used the OPPO R17 Pro the way most users would – with automatic settings, and no artificial lighting or setup. This would also let us evaluate just how effective the AI Ultra-Clear Engine is in delivering a great final output.

 

Sydney Central Railway Station

The Sydney Central Railway Station is the largest train station in the state of New South Wales, and is a heritage building.

The OPPO R17 Pro’s mechanical aperture will automatically switch between f/1.5 and f/2.4, depending on the lighting condition. This allows to adapt to changing ambient light. ensuring better low-light pictures while ensuring highlights are not blown out in bright conditions.

Three Sisters + Jamison Valley

The Three Sisters are a famous rock formation in the Blue Mountains, right next to the town of Katoomba.

The three rocks, known individually as Meehni (922 m), Wimlah (918 m), and Gunnedoo (906 m), tower over the lush Jamison Valley.

We took these pictures with the OPPO R17 Pro (MY | US) at around sunset.

 

Katoomba Cascades

The Katoomba Cascades is a small segmented waterfall that feeds into the main Katoomba Falls waterfall. It’s a great place for a picnic and pictures (because it’s relatively safe to climb).

 

Scenic Railway

The Scenic Railway is the most exciting ride in Scenic World, the main tourist attraction in the Blue Mountains.

We took two videos of the Scenic Railway with the OPPO R17 Pro (MY | US) to test its 4K UHD video recording capability. Check them out :

At Scenic World, you also get to check out the Three Sisters and Jamison Valley, from the east. The OPPO R17 Pro (MY | US) delivered really great results in this picture.

Even though it was really bright, it automatically stopped down to the f/2.4 aperture, eliminating glare and giving it greater depth of field. Look at how rich the colours are.

Incidentally, the Blue Mountains isn’t really blue in colour. It got its name from the blue haze that is created from sunlight reflecting off dust, water vapour and the oils from the eucalyptus trees that blanket the area.

For all cruises and cross-harbour ferries, the Sydney Circular Quay is where most of the action is.

Fast ferries to Parramatta and Manly, as well as the various wharfs in the area, provide an affordable and scenic way to enjoy Sydney.

It is also close to The Rocks and other tourist attractions, including the Customs House and Darling Harbour.

Catching the many Sydney ferries is an AWESOME and highly affordable way to take in the sights. Here are some great views from the Taronga Zoo.

The ferries also stop at Luna Park, to the north of Sydney Harbour.

The Sydney Cross-Harbour Ferry, in particular, will bring you under the Harbour Bridge…

And past the famous Sydney Opera House!

The ferries are rather unstable platforms because they go really fast, but this was not a problem for the OPPO R17 Pro (MY | US), as the pictures show. That’s because both of its rear cameras are optically-stabilised.

 

Darling Harbour

The nearby Darling Harbour is also a great place to visit.

The ICC Sydney (International Convention Centre) is just unique for its architecture, there are also some interesting buskers showing off their skills along the harbour side and nearby park.

OPPO R17 Pro Photos Of The Sydney CBD

Exploring the Sydney Central Business District (CBD) is extremely easy using train. Then all you need to do is wander around on foot.

The most popular stations are Central, which is located close to Chinatown and Paddy’s Market, or Circular Quay, near many tourist attractions like the Harbour Bridge and The Rocks.

Just behind the Circular Quay, you will find the Sydney Customs House, and the Sydney Gateway Plaza.

Sydney boasts a mix of fresh bold architecture and grand old Victorian architecture.

Only in Australia will you find the LGBT flag flying high on top of a town hall, with a Christmas tree right underneath it. We present to you – the Sydney Town Hall!

Thanks to the magic of perspective, the Sydney Tower Eye appears shorter than we expected…

No trip to Sydney is complete without a stop in Chinatown, and Paddy’s Market for souvenirs and food!

Even as it gets dark, the OPPO R17 Pro (MY | US) does not fail to deliver really great pictures. Its camera automatically switches to the wider f/1.5 aperture for more light.

It also helps that OPPO used the excellent Sony IMX362 sensor, which boasts large 1.4 µm pixels and Dual Pixel autofocus capability. This lets it focus faster and take better pictures in low-light conditions.

We especially like the photo above. It is actually a very hard scene for smartphones to handle. But the OPPO R17 Pro (MY | US) did a great job of controlling the highlights of the bright background, while bringing out the details of the darker foreground.

Photos Of The Harbour Bridge + The Rocks

A short distance northwest of the Circular Quay is The Rocks, a historic tourist destination at the south end of the Harbour Bridge.

There is a famous weekend market, called The Rocks Market, that usually opens from 10 AM to 5 PM on Saturdays and Sundays.

At the end of The Rocks Market is the Dawes Point Park, located right UNDER the Harbour Bridge!

Don’t forget to check out the Create NSW building right next to The Rocks Market. It houses the Museums and Galleries of NSW, The Australian Ballet and the Sydney Art Exchange.

At the end of the Dawes Point Park, you will find the Dawes Point Battery, a heritage artillery fortification. Many boys (at heart) have pretended to shoot at passing boats using the cannons on display here.

Walk down from Dawes Point Battery to Dawes Point (on the left) and the Hickson Road Reserve (on the right), and you will have the opportunity to take some great shots of the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House.

iPhone XS vs Galaxy Note9 – Low Light Camera Performance!

We compared the Samsung Galaxy Note9‘s low light performance against the iPhone X back in September, just before the Apple iPhone XS (US | UKShopee | Lazada) was released.

The iPhone XS maintained the same dual-lens camera module from last year’s iPhone X, with software improvements like Smart HDR and better tone mapping. The only hardware upgrade we could tell was the ability to record stereo sound for its videos.

What this means is the  iPhone XS has very similar photographic capabilities to the Samsung Galaxy Note9. They both use 12 MP image sensors with 1.0 µm pixels, paired with f/2.4 lens that offer 2X optical zoom with optical image stabilisation. Where they really differ in is their wide-angle cameras.

The iPhone X’s wide-angle camera uses a 12 MP image sensor with 1.22 µm pixels, paired with f/1.8 lens that support optical image stabilisation.

The Galaxy Note9, on the other hand, uses a 12 MP image sensor with larger 1.4 µm pixels, paired with a Dual Aperture lens that can switch between  f/1.5 and f/2.4. It also supports optical image stabilisation.

iPhone XS vs Galaxy Note9 – Low Light Video Shootout

Let’s kick it off with a comparison of their low-light video recording capabilities. This time, we tested them with and without their flash turned on.

With and without the flash, the Samsung Galaxy Note9 (US | UKShopee | Lazada) was definitely better at recording low-light videos than the Apple iPhone XS (US | UKShopee | Lazada).

It is not just about the brightness. Thanks to its quad-lens flash, the iPhone XS has better control of the light. But it lacks contrast compared to the Galaxy Note9.

Here is an example of a night dancing session at the Curve. The singers are on a well-lit platform, but the dancers are not lit by street lights. The Samsung Galaxy Note9 was not mounted on any gimbal.

Despite the changing brightness of the scene, the Samsung Galaxy Note9 did a great job of instantly adjusting the brightness of the subjects. This is not an easy feat when we switched focus to the dancers, because the background is much brighter.

What we ended up with is a happy balance of reasonably bright subjects without overly bright backgrounds. In fact, you can see right into the restaurant behind the dancers!

iPhone XS vs Galaxy Note9 – Low Light Photo Shootout

Let’s start with a dimly-lit shot. Here we have four toys with some indirect lighting.

Dimly-Lit Scene

When you try to take a poorly-lit scene, the Samsung Galaxy Note9 (US | UKShopee | Lazada) automatically switches to the wide f/1.5 aperture. The depth-of-field was much shallower, so you need to be careful about framing the shot, or focusing on the subject, or it will be out-of-focus.

But look at how well the colours turn out. Even in the low light, the colours appear vivid, especially the red lightsaber and Mario’s red shirt. You can also make out that his jeans is blue in colour.

The photo taken by the Apple iPhone XS (US | UKShopee | Lazada) was darker, so the colours are noticeably muted. And Mario’s jeans now appears to be black, instead of blue. Its f/1.8 aperture is definitely no match for the Galaxy Note9’s wider f/1.5 aperture.

Extremely Low Light

We turned off the background light, and it’s almost completely dark. Yet, we can make out all four toys, including Darth Minion, using the Samsung Galaxy Note9.

Unfortunately, it was so dark with the iPhone XS, we can barely frame the shot. You can just about see a little of the baby leopard’s head, but that’s about it.

Bright Night Scenes

These two photo comparisons will look at street scenes that are lit up by street lights.

In both cases, the Samsung Galaxy Note9 (US | UKShopee | Lazada) delivered brighter and more realistically-lit photos than the iPhone XS (US | UKShopee | Lazada).

 

iPhone XS vs Galaxy Note9 – Our Verdict

When we first posted our Galaxy Note9 vs iPhone X comparison, some iPhone fans criticised us for not using the newer iPhone XS. Never mind the fact that they were not available when we did the test. Never mind the fact that both the iPhone X and iPhone XS have the same camera hardware.

To be fair to these Apple fans, the iPhone XS (US | UKShopee | Lazada) introduces some new software improvements. Squeezing a little extra out of old hardware is something Apple engineers are very good at.

But no matter how clever they are, they just cannot beat the superior optics and sensor in the Samsung Galaxy Note9 (US | UKShopee | Lazada), and by extension, the Samsung Galaxy S9+. In every test, the Samsung smartphone was superior in low light conditions.

Not only does the Galaxy Note9 have a larger and brighter f/1.5 aperture, its image sensor has 32% larger pixels – 1.4 microns vs. 1.22 microns. They both allow for significantly better low-light camera performance, whether you are taking photos or recording videos.

Whatever Apple may put on the billboards, the Galaxy Note9 and Galaxy S9+ has superior photography and videography performance. This is yet another reason why we gave it our Editor’s Choice Award!

Galaxy Note9 vs iPhone X – Who Wins The Low Light Shootout?

Our previous low-light camera comparison between the Samsung Galaxy Note9 and two other Android smartphones was so popular, we decided to pit it against the best smartphone Apple could produce – the iPhone X.

We only had a short time with the Apple iPhone X, but it was good enough to get some sample shots and videos. Check out our low-light shootout between the Samsung Galaxy Note9 and the Apple iPhone X!

 

Galaxy Note9 vs. iPhone X – Cameras Compared

Both the Samsung Galaxy Note9 (US | UKShopee | Lazada) and the Apple iPhone X boast dual main cameras – a wide angle camera and a telephoto camera.

Interestingly, their telephoto cameras are practically identical in feature and capability. They both use 12 MP image sensors with 1.0 µm pixels, paired with f/2.4 lens that offer 2X optical zoom with optical image stabilisation. But their wide-angle cameras are quite different.

The iPhone X’s wide-angle camera uses a 12 MP image sensor with 1.22 µm pixels, paired with f/1.8 lens that support optical image stabilisation.

The Galaxy Note9, on the other hand, uses a 12 MP image sensor with larger 1.4 µm pixels, paired with a Dual Aperture lens that can switch between  f/1.5 and f/2.4. It also supports optical image stabilisation.

Let’s start with a dimly-lit shot. Here we have four toys with some indirect lighting.

Dimly-Lit Scene

The Samsung Galaxy Note9 (US | UKShopee | Lazada) automatically switched to the wide f/1.5 aperture. The depth-of-field was much shallower, so Mario is a little out-of-focus. But the colours are more accurately captured even in this dimly-lit scene.

When we switched to the iPhone X, its f/1.8 aperture had a deeper DOF. However, the colours are more muted and some details are lost. Look at the red-coloured heart in Darth Minion’s hand, and Mario’s left boot.

Extremely Low Light

We turned off the background lights, and look at the difference! It’s obviously much darker now, but yet, we can make out Darth Minion, and the details of Woody’s hat, when we used the Samsung Galaxy Note9 (US | UKShopee | Lazada).

When we switched to the iPhone X though, the photo was darker and noisier. Darth Minion was hardly visible. and you cannot make out Mario’s belly!

Bright Lights At Night

We then looked at how both cameras controlled bright lights at night.

The Samsung Galaxy Note9 (US | UKShopee | Lazada) did a better job of controlling the highlights. The street lamp is more subdued. The letter R on the building is better defined, and the brightly-lit trees in the far background are clearly seen.

With the iPhone X, the street lamp has a brighter glare, and noticeably, the highlights are blown out at the top of the brightly-lit trees in the far background. The letter R on the building is also a little overblown, appearing white (instead of blue) and less well-defined.

What about recording video in low-light conditions? Let’s look at the worst-case scenario – extremely low-light conditions from above.

As you can see, there is a HUGE difference in the low-light video quality taken by the Samsung Galaxy Note9 (US | UKShopee | Lazada), as opposed to the Apple iPhone X.

Here is an example of a night dancing session at the Curve. The singers are on a well-lit platform, but the dancers are not lit by street lights. The Samsung Galaxy Note9 was not mounted on any gimbal.

Despite the changing brightness of the scene, the Samsung Galaxy Note9 did a great job of instantly adjusting the brightness of the subjects. This is not an easy feat when we switched focus to the dancers, because the background is much brighter.

What we ended up with is a happy balance of reasonably bright subjects without overly bright backgrounds. In fact, you can see right into the restaurant behind the dancers!

 

Galaxy Note9 vs. iPhone X – Verdict

The verdict is pretty obvious. As far as low-light photography and videography is concerned, the Samsung Galaxy Note9 (US | UKShopee | Lazada) is superior to Apple iPhone X in every aspect.

No matter whether you are taking photos or videos, in dimly-lit scenes or really low-light conditions, the Galaxy Note9 will deliver much better results than the iPhone X, without exception.

Even in brightly-lit scenes, the Galaxy Note9 does a better job of controlling the highlights. This is just as important as bringing out the details hidden in the shadows. The iPhone X shows a tendency to overflow the highlights, losing colour and detail in the process.

Whatever Apple may put on the billboards, we are sticking with the Samsung Galaxy Note9 (US | UKShopee | Lazada) for our photography and videography needs. This is yet another reason why we gave it our Editor’s Choice Award!

The Official Nikon Z7 + Nikon Z6 Tech Briefing + Showcase!

Nikon today officially unveiled the Nikon Z7 and Nikon Z6 – their first-ever full-frame mirrorless cameras, as well as the new line of NIKKOR Z lenses.

Here is the official Nikon Z7 and Nikon Z6 tech briefing, as well as a photo showcase by celebrity photographer Keda Z, and a Nikon Z7 and NIKKOR Z lens showcase!

 

The Official Nikon Z7 + Nikon Z6 Tech Briefing

Albert Yap, Assistant Manager of International Customer Support, Nikon Singapore, gave the tech briefing on the new Nikon Z7 and Nikon Z6 cameras, as well as the new NIKKOR Z lenses.

The Nikon Z7 and Nikon Z6 cameras are based on the new Nikon Z Mount. The Z Mount has a 55 mm diameter, with a very short 16 mm flange focal distance. This allows Nikon to fit a full-frame FX-format sensor into a very thin form factor.

The Nikon Z7 is designed for large format photography, boasting a 45.7 MP sensor with 493 AF points. It has an expanded ISO range of 64 to 25,600, and can take burst shots of up to 9 frames per second.

The Nikon Z6, on the other hand, is designed for high-speed and/or low-light photography. It has a 24.5 MP sensor with just 273 AF points, but a wider ISO range of 100 to 51,200. It can take burst shots of up to 12 frames per second.

Both cameras will support all existing F-mount lenses, using the new Nikon FTZ mount adaptor, with full capabilities intact. FTZ, incidentally, stands for F To Z or F-mount To Z-mount.

These new Nikon full-frame mirrorless cameras also introduce new in-body 5-axis image stabilisation, whose performance Nikon says is equivalent to 5 stops of shutter speed.

They also now support full-frame recording of 4K video at 30 frames per second, and 1080p videos at up to 120 frames per second. Professional videographers will love its support for an external recorder, and 10-bit N-Log (4:2:2) gamma recording.

 

Nikon Z7 Photo Showcase by Keda Z

Celebrity photographer Keda Z presented his photo showcase using the Nikon Z7 mirrorless camera. He also shared his experience using Nikon’s new full-frame mirrorless camera, in comparison to the larger Nikon DSLR cameras he regularly uses.

NIKKOR Z S-Line Lenses

The DJI Mavic 2 Pro Drone Preview + Tech Briefing

DJI just introduced the Mavic 2 Pro – the world’s first drone with an integrated Hasselblad camera. Let’s check out the tech briefing by DJI’s Global Director of Communication Kevin On, and our hands-on preview of the new DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone!

 

The Official DJI Mavic 2 Tech Briefing

The Mavic 2 Pro is DJI’s most advanced camera drone ever built, designed for professionals, aerial photographers and content creators who want a drone with the best possible image quality.

Incorporating the iconic folding design of the Mavic Pro, the Mavic 2 Pro features a new gimbal-stabilized Hasselblad camera and advanced features like Hyperlapse and ActiveTrack for easier and more dynamic storytelling.

With an impressive flight time of up to 31 minutes and a more stable video transmission system, the Mavic 2 Pro offers an expanded flight experience for capturing even more epic shots.

 

The DJI Mavic 2 Pro

Co-engineered with Hasselblad, the Mavic 2 Pro is the world’s first drone to feature a Hasselblad camera. The Hasselblad camera features a 1-inch CMOS sensor with a 10-bit Dlog-M colour profile that allows it to capture four times the colour levels per channel of the Mavic Pro camera.

Its camera can also capture 20 MP photos using Hasselblad’s Natural Colour Solution (HNCS) technology, with an adjustable aperture from f/2.8 to f/11. It also records 4K HDR videos with 10-bit colour and Hybrid Log-Gamma.

4K HDR Videos With H.265 Encoding

The Mavic 2 Pro captures 4K video with a maximum bitrate of 100 megabits per second using the H.265 compression codec. For photographers, new Enhanced High Dynamic Range capabilities blend a sequence of photos for ghost-free high dynamic range photos. This gives the Mavic 2 Pro an impressive 14 stops of dynamic range.

New Intelligent Tools For Cinematic Shots

The Mavic 2 Pro offers new intelligent flight modes for almost effortless professional-quality results. Hyperlapse produces shots that show the passing of time. You can also choose between Circle, Course Lock, Waypoint or Free mode to create timelapses with a simple tap of a button in the DJI GO 4 Mobile App:

  • Free – pilots the drone manually while shooting a Hyperlapse video.
  • Circle – automatically flies the drone in a circular pattern around a subject you select to create a timelapse video that captures the action.
  • Course Lock – keeps the camera fixed on shooting subject while the drone flies in a straight direction to create a unique perspective.
  • Waypoint – plans a complex flight path based on both altitude and GPS coordinates to capture complex shots.

ActiveTrack 2.0 offers a combination of autonomous tracking and obstacle sensing capabilities never before seen in a DJI drone. Using the main camera and the front dual vision cameras, the Mavic 2 Pro creates a three-dimensional map of the area in front of it, and uses new trajectory algorithms to analyze motion and predict the subject’s path up to three seconds in the future.

When tracking a target, the Mavic 2 Pro can recognize and avoid obstacles while shooting your target without interruption. It can stay on target, even if your subject momentarily goes behind an obstacle, and can track the subject at higher speeds of up to 44 mph (72 km/h).

Safer, Smarter and Stable Flight

The Mavic 2 Pro has an upgraded FlightAutonomy system with a more powerful central processor that delivers more accurate obstacle sensing and safer flight. For the first time ever in a DJI drone, Mavic 2 Zoom has 10 sensors on all sides of the aircraft to automatically detect obstacles in its path and help prevent collisions

An improved Advanced Pilot Assistance System (APAS) allows the aircraft to analyze its surrounding environment and automatically fly around obstacles without stopping. In addition, the Mavic 2 Pro has a Bottom Auxiliary Light that turns on automatically to ensure safe and precise landings in low-light situations.

A newly designed OcuSync 2.0 video transmission system enables a more stable connection between the drone and its remote controller. The system features stronger interference resistance and auto-switching capabilities that supports both 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz frequency bands with the capability to use different frequencies for uplink and downlink data streams.

It delivers 1080p video transmission feeds at a distance of up to 8 km, and original resolution photos in JPEG can be saved directly to your mobile device.

Aerodynamic Design and Extended Flight Time

The new redesigned and more aerodynamic airframe reduces body drag by up to 19% compared to the Mavic Pro, allowing the Mavic 2 Pro to fly at speeds of up to 44 mph (72 km/h) in Sport mode.

Combined with a more efficient, quieter propulsion system and noise reducing propellers, the Mavic 2 Pro has a maximum flight time of up to 31 minutes.

To ensure crisp photos and smooth, shake-free footage, the Mavic 2 Pro houses an ultra-precise three-axis mechanical gimbal to stabilize its camera even during high-speed motion. Photos and videos can be saved directly to the drone using its 8 GB onboard storage. All DJI users have control over how their data is stored and managed, as part of DJI’s commitment to protecting its customers’ data.

A redesigned remote controller features detachable control sticks for ease of storage and portability. The Mavic 2 Pro is compatible with DJI Goggles with the gimbal (yaw) control range up to -75°¬– +75° in Head Tracking mode, offering users a more immersive FPV flight experience.

The DJI Mavic 2 Pro is priced at RM 6,599 (including SST) / ~US$ 1,649. The package will consist of the drone, battery, remote controller, charger, and four pairs of propellers.

A Fly More Kit, which consists of two additional batteries, a multi-battery charging hub, a car charger, a battery to power bank adapter, two pairs of propellers and a carrying bag, will retail at RM 1,399 (including SST) / ~US$ 350.

ActiveTrack 2.0 offers a combination of autonomous tracking and obstacle sensing capabilities never before seen in a DJI drone. Using the main camera and the front dual vision cameras, the Mavic 2 Zoom creates a three-dimensional map of the area in front of it, and uses new trajectory algorithms to analyze motion and predict the subject’s path up to three seconds in the future.

When tracking a target, the Mavic 2 Zoom can recognize and avoid obstacles while shooting your target without interruption. It can stay on target, even if your subject momentarily goes behind an obstacle, and can track the subject at higher speeds of up to 44 mph (72 km/h).

Safer, Smarter and Stable Flight

The Mavic 2 Zoom has an upgraded FlightAutonomy system with a more powerful central processor that delivers more accurate obstacle sensing and safer flight. For the first time ever in a DJI drone, Mavic 2 Zoom has 10 sensors on all sides of the aircraft to automatically detect obstacles in its path and help prevent collisions

An improved Advanced Pilot Assistance System (APAS) allows the aircraft to analyze its surrounding environment and automatically fly around obstacles without stopping. In addition, the Mavic 2 Zoom has a Bottom Auxiliary Light that turns on automatically to ensure safe and precise landings in low-light situations.

A newly designed OcuSync 2.0 video transmission system enables a more stable connection between the drone and its remote controller. The system features stronger interference resistance and auto-switching capabilities that supports both 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz frequency bands with the capability to use different frequencies for uplink and downlink data streams.

It delivers 1080p video transmission feeds at a distance of up to 8 km, and original resolution photos in JPEG can be saved directly to your mobile device.

Aerodynamic Design and Extended Flight Time

The new redesigned and more aerodynamic airframe reduces body drag by up to 19% compared to the Mavic Pro, allowing the Mavic 2 Zoom to fly at speeds of up to 44 mph (72 km/h) in Sport mode.

Combined with a more efficient, quieter propulsion system and noise reducing propellers, the Mavic 2 Zoom has a maximum flight time of up to 31 minutes.

To ensure crisp photos and smooth, shake-free footage, the Mavic 2 Zoom houses an ultra-precise three-axis mechanical gimbal to stabilize its camera even during high-speed motion. Photos and videos can be saved directly to the drone using its 8 GB onboard storage. All DJI users have control over how their data is stored and managed, as part of DJI’s commitment to protecting its customers’ data.

A redesigned remote controller features detachable control sticks for ease of storage and portability. The Mavic 2 Zoom is compatible with DJI Goggles with the gimbal (yaw) control range up to -75°¬– +75° in Head Tracking mode, offering users a more immersive FPV flight experience.

 

DJI Mavic 2 Zoom Price + Availability

The DJI Mavic 2 Zoom is priced at RM 5,699 (including SST) / ~US$ 1,425. The package will consist of the drone, battery, charger, remote controller and four pairs of propellers.

A Fly More Kit, which consists of two additional batteries, a multi-battery charging hub, a car charger, a battery to power bank adapter, two pairs of propellers and a carrying bag, will retail at RM 1,399 (including SST) / ~US$ 350.

A gimbal replacement service for both variants will be available at a later date.
