How To Renew Malaysian Passport Online : 2024 Guide!

Find out how to renew your Malaysian passport online through the MyOnline Passport service in 2024!

 

You Must Renew Your Malaysian Passport Online!

MyOnline Passport is a service by the Immigration Department of Malaysia, which allows you to renew your Malaysian passports online.

On 11 May 2022, the Immigration Department stopped allowing most people to walk-in for their passport renewal. Except for a selected group of people, everyone else must renew their passports online.

How To Renew Your Malaysian Passport Online!

The MyOnline Passport service was originally designed by the Immigration Department of Malaysia as a convenient, online way for people to renew their Malaysian international passports.

However, it is now the only way to renew your Malaysian passport for most people, from 11 May 2022 onwards. Here is what you need to know about the process.

Only For International Passport Renewals

The first thing you must be aware is that MyOnline Passport can only be used to renew existing international passports issued by the Immigration Department of Malaysia.

You cannot use it to apply for a new passport, or to replace a stolen or damaged passport. You also cannot use it to renew special or restricted passports.

To apply for a new passport, or to replace a stolen / damaged passport, or renew special or restricted passports, you must walk-in.

Children who are less than 13 years old, special needs individuals, and those performing the Haj, must also walk-in to renew their passports.

Who Can Apply For Online Passport Renewal?

The MyOnline Passport service is only open to applicants 13 years and older, with existing Malaysian e-passports (passport with microchip).

Underaged applicants (13-18 years old) must have the consent of their parent(s) / legal guardian(s) to apply online, and the parent(s) / legal guardian(s) must be present during the collection of passport.

Can Overseas Citizens Use MyOnline Passport?

This service is also open to Malaysian citizens living overseas, with collection centres in these countries :

  • Australia : Canberra, Melbourne, Perth
  • China : Beijing, Kunming, Guangzhou, Shanghai
  • Hong Kong
  • Indonesia : Jakarta
  • India : Mumbai, Chennai, New Delhi
  • Singapore
  • United Kingdom : London
  • United States : New York

How Soon Can You Collect Your Passport?

If you submit the online application before 3 PM on a working day, you will be able to collect the new passport on the same day.

If you submit the online application after 3 PM on a working day, or anytime during a holiday, you can collect the new passport after 10 AM on the following working day.

Where Do You Collect The Passport?

Applicants can collect their renewed passports from a Passport Recipient and Issuance Office of their choice, from a list in the system.

The collection date and time will be provided, depending on the date and time the application was submitted.

How Much Does It Cost?

The MyOnline Passport service is free. You only need to pay for the standard Malaysian international passport renewal fees :

  • 13 to 59 Years Old : RM200
  • Above 60 Years Old : RM100

Payment must be made via a credit card or debit card / direct debit (FPX) on the website.

Please Check Blacklist Before Applying!

Every online passport renewal application will be vetted against the Immigration Department’s blacklist.

So please check if you are on the Immigration Department’s blacklist before you even apply.

  1. Go to the Immigration Control Status Checking page.
  2. Key in your 12-digit MyKad identity card number (without dash).
  3. Click on the Check button.

If you get the green No restriction result, then you may apply to renew your passport online.

What Is Required To Submit An Application?

Here is what you need to have, before applying for online renewal of your Malaysian international passport.

  • an existing Malaysia e-passport (passport with microchip) that is not defaced or water-damaged
  • a digital passport-sized photo with these specifications :
    a) background must be white, and without shadows (coloured backgrounds will not be accepted)
    b) applicants must wear dark clothing that cover the shoulders and chest.
    c) applicants who wear a scarf or hijab must wear dark-coloured scarf / hijab, and it must not cover the face.
    d) uploaded photo must have been taken at a professional photo studio, in the format provided by the photo studio. Polaroid photos will not be accepted.
    e) applications that do not meet these specifications will be put on-hold, resulting in delayed issuance and collection.
    f) you may have your passport photo taken at the Passport Recipient and Issuance Office you selected to collect your passport, if your passport photo does not meet the required specifications
  • a valid credit card / debit card / online bank account to make the required payment

In addition, you must be sure that :

  • you are able to physically collect the new passport in-person (a representative may not collect for you)
  • for underaged applicants : both applicant and parent(s) / legal guardian(s) must be present to collect the new passport

Passport Photo Specifications

Here are the latest specifications for online submission of passport photos (source | source):

  • Background must be white and without shadows. Coloured backgrounds will not be accepted.
  • Applicants are required to wear dark clothing that cover the shoulders and chest.
  • Applicants may wear dark-coloured scarfs or hijabs but they must not cover the face.
  • Applicants must not wear glasses, coloured contact lenses, or hair/head accessories. Hair should not cover the face.
  • Applicants must look directly at the camera, with both eyes open, and the mouth closed.
  • You must take the photo at a professional photo studio, and upload the soft copy in the format provided by the photo studio. Polaroid pictures will not be accepted.

If the photo you upload do not meet the specifications, your application will be put on-hold, and you will be asked to resubmit the photo, or get one taken at a passport office.

What Is Required To Collect Passport?

Finally, when it’s time to collect your renewed passport, please make sure you bring :

  • your MyKad identification card
  • your existing Malaysian international passport
  • the payment receipt issued by the system
  • for underaged applicants : your parent(s) / legal guardian(s) must bring your Birth Certificate

You cannot send a representative to collect your passport. If you fail to bring the necessary documents, or collect your passport in person, the renewed passport will not be released.

Underage applicants must be accompanied by their parent(s) / legal guardian(s), or their renewed passport will not be released.

How Do You Start The Process?

You can start the process on this MyOnline Passport page.

You may make multiple passport renewals, but you must submit one application per person.

Please avoid registering from 10:55 PM to 12:30 AM, because that’s when the system undergoes daily maintenance and no payment can be processed during that time.

If You Get An Error Message…

If you get an error message while making payment, please contact your bank for further instructions.

If your photo was rejected, you can upload a new photo, or have your passport photo taken at the Passport Recipient and Issuance Office you selected to collect your passport.

If you get this error message – “Kindly contact the Immigration Department of Malaysia”, it means your online application was unsuccessful for one of these reasons :

  • The file containing your fingerprint was damaged or deleted. You will be required to go to the passport office to have your fingerprint taken again, to avoid problems at the airport arrival / departure gates.
  • Your application does not meet with the specifications listed on MyOnline Passport.
  • The information provided was inaccurate, and/or contradicts the information in the Immigration Department system.

Malaysia Digital Arrival Card Required For Foreign Visitors!

Foreign visitors are now required to complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) prior to arrival in Malaysia! Here is what you need to know…

 

Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) Requirement

From 1 December 2023 onwards, the Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM) requires foreign visitors to complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) prior to their arrival in Malaysia.

The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) replaces the physical white arrival card that foreign visitors usually complete before or on arrival in Malaysia.

This new rule applies to all foreign visitors, except:

  • people transiting / transferring through Singapore without seeking immigration clearance,
  • Malaysian Permanent Resident, and
  • Malaysian Automated Clearance System (MACS) holders

As an added benefit, foreign visitors from 10 countries can register their fingerprint at the immigration country, and will thereafter be able to use the Autogate (Egate) at Malaysian airports and other ports of entry to quickly get through immigration!

  • Australia
  • Brunei
  • Germany
  • Japan
  • South Korea
  • New Zealand
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Singapore
  • United States
  • United Kingdom

But please note that the MDAC is not a visa. Neither is it an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) that some countries use to pre-register visitors for multiple entries.

Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) Steps

For The First Time

All foreign visitors (except those who were explicitly exempted above) will need to register for the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) for the first time.

  1. Enrol for the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) at this official link.
  2. Complete and submit the MDAC within three days (3) prior to your arrival in Malaysia.
    You will be required to fill in these information:
    a) Full name
    b) Passport number
    c) Nationality
    d) Sex
    e) Date of Birth
    f) Date of Passport Expiry
    g) Email address
    h) Mobile Number
    i) Date of Arrival : Must be within 3 days (including date of submission)
    j) Date of Departure
    k) Mode of Travel : Air / Land / Sea
    l) Last Port of Embarkation
  3. On arrival in Malaysia, you will need to enroll and verify your passport manually at the Malaysian Immigration Department counter.
  4. After that manual enrolment, you will be allowed to use the Egate autogate system when you depart Malaysia.

On Subsequent Visits

On subsequent visits, foreign visitors will need to:

  1. Complete and submit the MDAC within three days (3) prior to your arrival in Malaysia.
  2. Use the Autogate system on arrival and departure

As you can see, the new Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) does more than just eliminate waste and improve efficiency through digital transformation of the physical arrival card. It also streamlines the immigration process for foreign visitors, and allows some of them to breeze through using the Egate system!

But again – please note that you can only submit the MDAC within 3 days of your trip, and this includes the date of submission.

* Please note that Egate eligibility is only open to business and social travellers from these 10 countries, who have an e-Passport, and will only start after you have enrolled your fingerprints (biometric verification) at the immigration counter.

Truth : Elderly Tourists Are Not Banned From Group Tours In China!

This is yet another example of FAKE NEWS circulating on WhatsApp, and social media platforms, and here are there reasons why…

Fact #1 : Viral Message Circulated Since 2019

First, let me just point out that the viral message isn’t new. It has been circulating since March 2019, if not earlier.

Initially, it started in Chinese social media platforms like Weibo and WeChat groups, but eventually made its way to WhatsApp and other social media platforms.

Fact #2 : National Tourism Administration Ceased In 2018

According to a Chinese fact check, the viral message could not have been issued by the National Tourism Administration of China, as it no longer existed in 2019.

As part of institutional reforms announced by the Chinese State Council in March 2018, it was replaced by the Culture and Tourism Administration of the People’s Republic of China Ministry of Tourism.

Fact #3 : Ministry of Culture and Tourism Has No Such Restrictions

A reporter for Jiefang Daily and Shangguan News checked the official website of the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism, but could find no announcement of any restrictions on elderly tourists travelling in group tours.

The reporter also noted that there were no specific restrictions on the “travel age for the elderly” even in previous policy documents.

Fact #4 : Shanghai Tourism Hotline Confirms No Such Restriction

The reporter also called the Shanghai tourism hotline to ask about whether there were new restrictions on elderly tourists planning to join tour groups in China.

The Shanghai tourism staff told the reporter that there is currently no national guidelines that prohibit group tours for those over 80 years old.

They suggested that the requirement that elderly people need to be accompanied by family members and/or have medical certificates may be the “voluntary requirements” of some travel agencies.

In such cases, the staff recommended that elderly tourists should consider some travel agencies in Shanghai that specialise in serving the elderly as they may be more suitable, and may not have such requirements.

Fact #5 : Travel Service Standards For Elderly Do Not Have Age Restrictions

In 2016, China issued its Travel Agency Elderly Tourism Service Standards, which stipulates that if elderly tourists participate in group tours, the travel agency should:

  • communicate and negotiate with the insurance company on the upper age limit for travel accident insurance,
  • collect detailed information of the elderly tourists,
  • ask elderly tourists who are over 75 years old to be accompanies by adult family members, or ask their immediate family members to sign off on their travel,
  • discuss the potential risks of senior tourism products and the health requirements of senior tourists before traveling, and
  • provide oral safety reminders and produce a “Safety Notice” to ensure that elderly tourists choose appropriate senior tourism products.

However, the 2016 Travel Agency Elderly Tourism Service Standards do not restrict elderly tourists of any age from travelling in group tours.

Fact #6 : Travel Agencies Refute Claims On Age Limits

The same reporter also reached out to Chinese travel agencies like Ctrip and CYTS on these claims of group tour restrictions on elderly tourists.

The Chinese travel agencies said that there is “no hard and fast age requirement” for seniors travelling in group tours.

They pointed out that different tours have different physical requirements, some of which may require elderly tourists to be accompanied by family members, or produce medical certificates and other documents to assure the travel agencies of their fitness.

Malaysia Airlines Passengers Won’t Need To Turn Off Devices!

On Tuesday, 28 June 2023, the Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) announced that its airlines – Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, and MASwings – are the first airlines to enable Gate-to-Gate connectivity for passengers by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM).

From 1 July 2023 onwards, passengers on three airlines can keep their personal devices switched on at all times. There is no longer the need to switch off your phone, tablet, laptop, or other devices, or stow them during take-off or landing.

As long as those devices must have their wireless connectivity turned off using the “Airplane Mode” or “Flight Mode“, you can continue to use them during take-off, or landing. This allows you to continue working on your laptop, or watch downloaded content on your phone or tablet during the entire journey, without interruption.

With this new regulatory approval, Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, and MASwings are the first airlines to allow Gate-to-Gate connectivity for passengers departing from Malaysia.

Malaysia Airlines To Provide Free Wi-Fi For 2H 2023!

Malaysia Airlines also announced that it will provide limited free Wi-Fi connectivity to its Business Suite, Business Class, and Enrich Platinum (regardless of ticket class) passengers from 1 July until 31 December 2023.

Each passenger will be given up to 100 MB of free Wi-Fi data per sector to use, at a speed of up to 512 kbps. This free Wi-Fi offer will be made available on 20 Malaysia Airlines aircraft.

Beyond that free limit, passengers can continue to surf the Internet through its pay-per-use Wi-Fi offering. In addition, all passengers can access its wireless in-flight entertainment system through its web-based MHStudio service.

As part of our connectivity strategy, we will be actively expanding the number of our aircraft equipped with Wi-Fi to provide an improved in-flight experience to our valued customers. The wireless connectivity onboard MAS aircraft, and passenger ability to use their devices from Gate-to-Gate, will come in handy with the refreshed Boeing 737 cabin, which feature lightweight seats that lack in-flight entertainment screens.

Air Travel To Malaysia : Latest Covid-19 Requirements + SOP!

Malaysia Air Travel : Current COVID-19 Vaccination Requirements

Currently, travellers to Malaysia must provide documentation that they have completed a full regimen of a COVID-19 vaccine recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO), or by a stringent regulatory authority in the country of origin.

There are additional requirements on COVID-19 vaccination for travellers :

  • Those aged 60 years and above are required to receive a booster dose.
  • Those received two doses of Sinopharm or Sinovac vaccine, regardless of age, must receive a third dose (of any vaccine) to qualify as fully-vaccinated.

The definition of a full regimen of a COVID-19 vaccine includes the number of doses required to provide the full vaccine protection, as well as the time needed to achieve protection against COVID-19.

Currently, that means 14 days after the second dose of a two (2) dose vaccine, or 14 days after a one (1) dose vaccine. In the case of Sinopharm / Sinovac vaccine recipients, that would mean 14 days after the third dose.

You are also considered fully-vaccinated immediately after receiving your booster dose.

Please make sure you submit your vaccination information through the Travellers option in MySejahtera, before your flight to Malaysia.

After submitting your COVID-19 vaccination details, you will receive a Travellers digital card, which allows you entry into Malaysia on arrival.

 

Malaysia Air Travel Test + Quarantine Rules From 1 May 2022!

On 27 April 2022, the Malaysia Minister of Health Khairy Jamaluddin announced new test and quarantine rules for travellers flying to Malaysia.

These COVID-19 test and quarantine rules take effect from Sunday, 1 May 2022 onwards!

A. Children 12 Years Or Younger : No Test, No Quarantine!

Irrespective of their vaccination status, children who are 12 years old or younger do NOT need to :

  • undergo pre-departure test
  • undergo on-arrival test, or
  • undergo HSO quarantine

B. Fully-Vaccinated 13 Years Or Older : No Test, No Quarantine!

Fully-vaccinated adolescents and adults who are 13 years or older do NOT need to :

  • undergo pre-departure test
  • undergo on-arrival test, or
  • undergo HSO quarantine

C. Partially-Vaccinated / Unvaccinated 13-17 Years Old : No Quarantine!

Adolescents who are 13-17 years old, and are partially vaccinated or unvaccinated do NOT need to undergo HSO quarantine on arrival in Malaysia.

However, they will need to undergo :

  • a PCR test within 48 hours before departure to Malaysia, and
  • a supervised RTK-Ag test within 24 hours of arrival in Malaysia.

D. Vaccinated Adults : No Test, No Quarantine!

Fully-vaccinated adults (18 years and older), with or without a booster dose, do NOT need to :

  • undergo pre-departure test
  • undergo on-arrival test, or
  • undergo HSO quarantine

E. Unvaccinated with Medical Exemption : No Quarantine!

Unvaccinated individuals with a medical exemption will be allowed, on a case-by-case basis, to travel to Malaysia without a mandatory quarantine.

However, they must undergo :

  • a PCR test within 48 hours before departure to Malaysia, and
  • a professional RTK-Ag test within 24 hours of arrival in Malaysia.

F. Unvaccinated Adults : 5 Day Quarantine

Adult travellers (18 years and older) who are partially-vaccinated, or completely unvaccinated, must :

  • undergo a 5-day mandatory quarantine on arrival in Malaysia, and
  • undergo a PCR test on Day 4, or a professional RTK-Ag test on Day 5.

Travellers who are exempt from vaccination for health reasons must upload the evidence of medical exemption into the MySejahtera app.

G. Unvaccinated + Post COVID-19 : 5 Day Quarantine

Unvaccinated individuals who recovered from COVID-19 (infected in the last 6-60 days) must:

  • undergo a 5-day mandatory quarantine on arrival in Malaysia, and
  • undergo a PCR test on Day 4, or a professional RTK-Ag test on Day 5.

If they were not hospitalised, they must undergo :

  • a professional RTK-Ag test within 48 hours before departure to Malaysia, and
  • a professional RTK-Ag test within 24 hours of arrival in Malaysia.

If they were hospitalised, they can use a Fit To Travel letter from the hospital.

 

Latest Malaysia Air Travel Procedure From 4 July 2022!

On 27 April 2022, the Malaysia Ministry of Health issued the official procedure for travellers who arrive by air, that will take effect from 1 May 2022 onwards.

It was then updated on 1 July 2022, with the abolishment of the Traveller’s Pass for Malaysian citizens.

Before Departure

  1. Download the MySejahtera app, and register for your MySejahtera account. *
  2. Click on the Traveller icon in MySejahtera, and complete the pre-departure form
    a) fully-vaccinated travellers will receive a Digital Traveller’s Card *
    b) partially vaccinated / unvaccinated travellers will receive a Digital Home Surveillance Order (HSO).
  3. All unvaccinated or partially vaccinated travellers 13 years and above must undergo a PCR test 2 days before departure.
  4. Those who had a previous COVID-19 infection (within 6-60 days before departure) must undergo a professional RTK-Ag test 2 days before departure, or alternatively, have a Free-To-Travel letter if they were hospitalised for COVID-19 during that time.
  5. You do NOT need to purchase travel and COVID-19 insurance.

* No longer necessary for Malaysian citizens, starting 4 July 2022.

On Arrival

  1. All partially vaccinated or unvaccinated travellers 13 years and above must undergo a supervised RTK-Ag test within 24 hours of arrival in Malaysia.
    a) this supervised RTK-Ag test can be performed at any health facility of your choice, or virtually
    b) COVID-19 breathalyser / professional RTK-Ag tests are available at the airport
    c) Cost of on-arrival RTK-Ag test must be borne by the travellers.
  2. Children below the age of 13, and travellers from Singapore are exempted from the on-arrival test.
  3. Partially-vaccinated / unvaccinated travellers must undergo a mandatory 5-day quarantine.
  4. IMPORTANT : Travellers transiting through Malaysian international airports to Sabah or Sarawak must undergo professional RTK-Ag at the airport, before departing.

Testing Positive On Arrival

If you test positive on arrival, you must undergo a mandatory HSO quarantine of 7 days.

You can opt for the new Day 4 test and release procedure, by undertaking a supervised RTK-Ag test on Day 4 of your quarantine.

  • If you test negative, you are allowed to immediately terminate your quarantine.
  • If you test positive, you must complete your 7-day quarantine

Testing Positive During Quarantine

If you are a partially vaccinated / unvaccinated traveller, you will need to undergo a 5-day quarantine, and get tested on Day 4 (PCR) or Day 5 (RTK-Ag).

If you test positive on Day 4 or Day 5, your quarantine will get extended for 5 more days.

Travellers To Europe Must Apply For ETIAS From 2023!

The European Commission has just announced the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) for all travellers to the Schengen States.

Slated to start in May 2023, ETIAS is meant to “identify security, irregular migration or high epidemic risks” amongst visa-exempt travellers.

EU travellers are exempt from ETIAS, and will continue to have freedom of movement throughout the EU, and the freedom to spend as much time as they want in any state in the Schengen zone.

ETIAS will only be obligatory for travellers from countries that currently do not require a visa to travel to the EU – about 60 countries including the US and the UK.

Travellers who currently need a visa to enter the EU will still need to apply for a visa. They will not be allowed to use ETIAS.

 

How Does ETIAS Work For Travellers To Europe?

Travellers will need to apply for ETIAS through a “largely automated IT system”, with approval granted “within minutes” for about 95% of applicants. But that could drag out to a month for “very exceptional cases”. Those who have their application denied will be allowed to appeal.

While applying for ETIAS will be quicker, done online, and requires no biometric information, there is a cost attached.

Every traveller aged 18 to 70 will need to pay an ETIAS fee of €7 (about US$7.40, £6, A$10.60, S$10.20, RM32.50). It is currently unknown if ETIAS will be free or cheaper for other age groups.

Applicants will be required to submit their data in the online application, which is said to take only “10 minutes” :

  • Unspecified personal data
  • Travel document (passport or equivalent document)
  • Member State of first intended stay
  • Background questions relating to previous criminal records, presence in conflict zones, orders to leave the territory of a Member State or third countries, return decisions issued.
  • Identity of the person / company assisting the applicant in the application process (if necessary)

The ETIAS system will automatically check the information provided against several EU databases, and approve or transfer it to ETIAS National Units for manual processing.

Once approved, the ETIAS will be valid for 3 years, or until the expiry date of the passport. So if possible, travellers should definitely renew their passports before applying.

But note that the ETIAS can be revoked at any time, if the conditions for that travel authorisation are no longer met by the applicant.

 

ETIAS : Selected FAQs

Here are selected FAQs on the European Travel Information and Authorisation System for those who want to learn more.

What is the difference between a Schengen visa and an ETIAS travel authorisation?

The ETIAS authorisation is not a visa. Nationals of visa liberalisation countries will continue to travel the EU without a visa but will simply be required to obtain a travel authorisation via ETIAS prior to their travel. ETIAS will be a simple, fast and visitor-friendly system, which will, in more than 95% of cases, result in a positive answer within a few minutes.

An ETIAS travel authorisation does not reintroduce visa-like obligations. There is no need to go to a consulate to make an application, no biometric data is collected and significantly less information is gathered than during a visa application procedure.

Whereas, as a general rule, a Schengen visa procedure can take up to 15 days, and can in some cases be extended up to 30 or 60 days, the online ETIAS application only takes a few minutes to fill in. Only in very exceptional cases, could the ETIAS procedure take up to 30 days. The validity will be for a period of three years, significantly longer than the validity of a Schengen visa. An ETIAS authorisation will be valid for an unlimited number of entries.

The ETIAS travel authorisation will be a necessary and small procedural step for all visa-exempt travellers which will allow them to avoid bureaucracy and delays when presenting themselves at the borders. ETIAS will fully respect this visa-free status; facilitate the crossing of the Schengen external border; and allow visa free visitors to fully enjoy their status.

What will visa-exempt travellers have to do before their travel?

Travellers will have to complete an online application via a dedicated website or an application for mobile devices. Filling in the application should not take more than 10 minutes and should not require any documentation beyond a travel document (a passport or other equivalent document). In case of an inability to apply (due to age, literacy level, access to and competence on information technology etc.) applications may be submitted by a third person.

An electronic payment of a €7 fee for each application will be required for all applicants between the ages of 18 and 70. The electronic payment methods will take into account technological advancements in the visa-free countries in order to avoid hindering visa-free third country nationals who may not have access to certain payment means.

The automated assessment process will start after the fee collection is confirmed. The vast majority of applicants (expected to be more than 95% of all cases) will be given automated approval which will be communicated to them within minutes of payment. If there is a hit against any of the searched databases or an undecided outcome of the automated process, manual handling of the application will take place by a Central Unit in the European Border and Coast Guard Agency or by a Member State team. This can prolong the response time to the visa-exempt third country national by up to 96 hours. In very exceptional circumstances further information may be asked of applicants and further procedural steps may be necessary, but in all cases a final decision shall be taken within four weeks of their application.

Of the roughly 5% of applications which produce a hit, it is expected that 3-4% will receive a positive decision after ETIAS Central Unit verifies the data, with the remaining 1-2% being transferred to ETIAS National Units for manual processing. After the decision applicants will be given a response by email with a valid travel authorisation, or a justification for the refusal.

What happens if a person has been refused travel authorisation from ETIAS?

If the travel authorisation is refused, the applicant retains the right to appeal. Appeals can be launched in the Member State that has taken the decision on the application and in accordance with the national law of that Member State. The applicant will be informed which national authority is responsible for the processing and decision on his or her travel authorisation, as well as information regarding the procedure to be followed in the event of an appeal. If the traveller considers their treatment to have been unfair, he/she is also given the right to seek redress or request access to the information through the national authority.

What is the validity of an ETIAS travel authorisation?

The validity of the travel authorisation will be three years (or until the expiry date of the travel document).

What are the obligations for the carriers?

Prior to boarding, air and sea carriers, as well as carriers transporting groups overland by coach will have to verify the status of the travel document required for entering the Schengen Area, including the requirement to hold a valid ETIAS travel authorisation. A transitional period is foreseen for carriers transporting groups overland by coach during which it will not be obligatory for them to check the presence of a valid travel authorisation.

What will happen at the border crossing point? 

Upon arrival at a Schengen area border crossing point, the border guard will electronically read the travel document data, thereby triggering a query to different databases, including a query to ETIAS in the case of visa-exempt travellers. If there is no valid ETIAS travel authorisation, the border guards will refuse entry and record the traveller and the refusal of entry in the Entry Exit System.

If there is a valid travel authorisation, the border control process will be conducted and the traveller may be authorised to enter the Schengen area if all entry conditions are fulfilled or refused access as provided by the Schengen Border Code.

What databases will be checked by ETIAS?

When verifying and assessing the information submitted by visa-exempt travellers, the system will automatically cross-check each application against: 

A. the existing EU information systems:

  • the Schengen Information System (SIS),
  • the Visa Information System (VIS),
  • Europol data,
  • the Eurodac database (once the Eurodac recast is in place),

B. future EU information systems:

  • the Entry/Exit System (EES), 

C. Interpol databases:

  • the Interpol Stolen and Lost Travel Document database (SLTD),
  • the Interpol Travel Documents Associated with Notices database (TDAWN),

D. a dedicated ETIAS watch list and specific risk indicators.

How will ETIAS ensure and guarantee the respect for fundamental rights and data protection?

Personal data recorded in ETIAS will not be kept for longer than is necessary for its purpose. Data shall be stored for: 

  • the period of validity of the travel authorisation or, 
  • five years from the last decision to refuse, revoke or annul the travel authorisation. 

The data could be stored for an additional period of no more than three years after the end of the period of validity of the travel authorisation if the applicant freely and explicitly consents to keep his or her data longer. After the expiry of the data retention period, the application file and personal data will be automatically deleted from the ETIAS Central System. 

Member States’ law enforcement authorities and Europol will have access to ETIAS, under strictly-defined conditions, for the prevention, detection or investigation of terrorist offences or other serious criminal offences. The designated authorities and Europol should only request access to ETIAS when they have reasonable grounds to believe that such access will substantially help them in carrying out their duties.

Please DO NOT Walk-In To Renew Your Malaysian Passport!

If you are planning to renew your international passport, please DO NOT just walk into a passport office!

You will most likely be rejected, because most applicants are NO LONGER allowed to walk in!

 

Warning : Most People CANNOT Walk In To Renew Passport!

Ever since Malaysia announced the reopening of the international borders, everyone has been rushing to renew their passports.

Initially, passport renewals required prior appointments, but that was abandoned after appointments stretched to August and beyond.

People were allowed to walk in, but that led to a massive surge of people queuing for hours at Immigration offices. So the government announced two major measures, from 11 May 2022 onwards :

Extended Operating Hours

The Immigration Department announced extended operating hours to cope with the demand :

  • Until 10 PM : Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor, Negeri Sembilan, and Melaka
  • Until 10 PM : All UTC (Urban Transformation Centre) outlets in peninsular Malaysia
  • Until 6 PM : Penang, Kedah, Perak, Kelantan, Pahang, Terengganu, and Perlis
  • 8 AM to 12:30 PM on Saturday : All passport offices in peninsular Malaysia (from 14 May onwards)

Walk-In Limited To Certain Groups

They also announced that only certain groups will be allowed to walk-in to renew their passports :

  • People applying for a new passport
  • Senior citizens (60 years and older)
  • Special needs individuals (must bring Social Welfare Department registration card)
  • Children who are less than 13 years old
  • People planning to perform the Haj (must bring the Tabung Haji offer letter)
  • Students (less than 21 years old) planning to study overseas
  • People who lost their passports (will require a police report)
  • People with damaged passports

Everyone else will have to renew their passports online!

Should You Walk In To Renew Your Passport?

Since I first published this article, I spoke to other people who tried to walk in and renew passports, only to be turned away.

Based on my own experience (see below), I can attest that the Immigration officers are dead serious about turning people away.

If you are not in the list of people permitted to renew passports on-the-spot, please don’t waste your time. You will only waste your time queuing up, only to be rejected. Try to renew your passport online instead.

Recently, a video clip went viral, showing a security guard demanding that reporters leave the crowded Pudu UTC passport centre. While such aggression is uncalled for, it shows the amount of pressure and tension surrounding this issue.

Every day, hundreds of people queue up at passport centres for hours, posing a real risk as social distancing is completely impossible. Most will be turned away.

If you are renewing a child’s passport or applying for a new one, the unwritten rule is that they will allow one parent to renew his/her passport as well. But this is not a guarantee. It is at the officer’s discretion, and subject to the number of walk-in slots they have left.

Even if you qualify for on-the-spot passport renewal, you should be aware that every passport office will give out a limited number of slots per day. Once those slots are filled, everyone else will be asked to go home.

So make sure you go early in the morning. Preferably you should arrive 30-60 minutes before the passport office opens. Some told me that they queued up as early as 6:30 AM in the morning!

Preferably you should try to go on weekdays, as parents with school-going children have no choice but to go on weekends.

I would also recommend you go to smaller passport offices, especially in UTCs or those located in covered buildings. Imagine if you have to wait in the hot sun for hours!

 

How I Managed To Walk In To Renew My Passport!

Now, let me share with you my recent experience of walking into the Sentul Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) passport office to renew my passport.

We had earlier planned to renew our passports at the Sentul UTC, where there was no need to queue (pre-pandemic), so I was able to go in and come out with a brand new passport within an hour!

We went to the Sentul UTC early on a Saturday morning – arriving 40 minutes before they opened at 8 AM. By then, there was already a long queue of at least 50 people in front of us!

Some eventually left after reading the notice on the door, which stated that only certain groups would be allowed to walk-in to renew passports.

Expect to spend several hours, so please bring some water and food to eat and drink while you wait. Please note that you are not allowed to eat inside the passport office.

The Immigration office opened at 8 AM sharp, and people started filing in. Within minutes, we could see some people leaving, looking dejected.

As we got closer to the counter, we could see the Immigration officer rejecting some applicants, and giving others their queue numbers. It was a very stressful experience for everyone queuing up because no one knows if they would be rejected or allowed to proceed.

By the time we got to the counter, it was already 8:45 AM. The officer asked us why we were not renewing our passports online. Fortunately, my passport was water damaged, and our son was less than 13 years old.

My wife though did not have a valid reason, but it appears that they will allow one parent accompanying a child to renew his/her passport too, so she was allowed to renew hers as well.

Again, I need to stress – this is at the officer’s discretion, and subject to the number of available slots. So it pays to be polite and early.

The Immigration officer then checked our documents. If you don’t have the required documents, you will also be rejected. So please make sure you have these documents ready :

  • Original passport
  • Original MyKad. A photocopy is required if you are applying for a new passport.
  • Original birth certificate for children who are less than 18 years old
    Please note that they will not accept MyKid
    A photocopy is also required, if your child are applying for a new passport
  • Those performing the Haj must bring the Tabung Haji offer letter.
  • Special needs individuals must bring their Social Welfare Department registration card.
  • Students who are less than 21 years old must bring their overseas university / college offer letter or a similar document

As we waited for our numbers to be called, we watched many people get rejected at the counter. There were easily 300 people queuing up at this small passport office that morning – most were asked to renew their passports online.

At about 9:15 AM – just half an hour after we got our queue numbers – they announced that all of the walk-in slots had been taken up, and asked everyone still queuing up to go home.

For those who were lucky enough to get a queue ticket, the rest of the process was pretty similar to what it was pre-pandemic :

  1. When your number is called, you head to the allocated counter to submit your documents.
  2. The officer will verify your identity using your MyKad and a fingerprint scanner.
  3. The officer will then take your passport photo on the spot.
    This is FREE of charge, which is awesome! Just sure you wear dark clothes.
  4. You will be asked to check your details on the application form, sign it and authenticate it with your fingerprint.
  5. Your application will then be vetted by an officer at the back, against the Immigration Department’s blacklist.
    So please check your Immigration Control Status before you apply for your passport renewal!
  6. Once your passport renewal application has been approved, you will be asked to make payment :
    – Individuals 13-59 years old : RM 200
    – Senior citizen (60 years and above) : RM 100
    – Individuals performing the Haj : RM 100
    – Special needs individuals : Free
    Please note that they will only accept payment by credit card or debit card. Cash is NOT accepted.
  7. After payment, you should receive your passport within one hour.

All in – it took us about 4.5 hours to renew our passports at the Sentul UTC passport office. This is fast, considering the crowd we saw.

An officer I spoke to said that their small passport office was processing about 400 passports a day, while the larger passport offices were doing at least 1,000 passports a day.

About a hundred that day were reserved for walk-ins, while the rest were for online applications – they still have to drop in to submit their old passports and verify their identities before collecting their new passports.

I hope my experience helps give you an idea of the current passport renewal process, if you are allowed to renew on-the-spot at a passport office.

EU Air Travel : Face Mask + Physical Distancing Not Required!

You will not longer be required to wear a face mask, or physically distance, during air travel to and from EU countries!

EU Air Travel : Face Mask + Physical Distancing Not Required!

On 11 May 2022, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) issued a joint statement, dropping their recommendation for the mandatory wearing of a face mask as well as physical distancing in airports and on flights.

From Monday, 16 May 2022 onwards, you will no longer be required to wear a face mask at airports, or onboard a flight across the European Union.

However, travellers with respiratory symptoms (coughing or sneezing) are strongly recommended to wear a face mask.

Airports are also no longer required to strictly implement physical distancing. Rather, they should adopt “a pragmatic approach”, and avoid imposing distancing requirements if they “will likely lead to a bottleneck”.

Airport operators are also not required to impose physical distancing if they are “not required at national or regional level”.

That said, they are still asking airport operators to encourage physical distancing where possible, particularly in the meet and greet areas and around baggage carousels.

 

Face Mask + Physical Distancing Not Required In EU, But Still Recommended!

While the EU will no longer require you to wear a face mask, or impose strict physical distancing during air travel, they are both still highly recommended to prevent COVID-19.

Here are selected excerpts from the latest EASA and ECDC guidelines (PDF) for air travel in the European Union :

Medical Face Masks

Medical face masks (hereafter referred to also as ‘face masks’) are among the most efficient means to prevent the transmission of SARS-COV-2 including existing VOCs. As such, the wearing of masks should be considered in crowded indoor and outdoor settings, including air travel.

If the departure or destination States require wearing of face masks in public transport, aircraft operators should require passengers and crew to wear a face mask beyond 16 May 2022.

In other cases, starting 16 May 2022, aircraft and aerodrome operators should continue to encourage passengers and crew members, as part of their pre-flight communications as well as during travel through signage and announcements, to wear a face mask during flight as well as in the airport as a way to protect themselves and others and that they should respect others’ decision to wear or to not wear a mask.

In their communication, operators should highlight that people at high risk for severe COVID-19 are advised to wear an FFP2 respirator mask during the flight for their own protection. Experimental studies indicate that respirators are more effective than medical face masks both in limiting the release of infectious respiratory droplets when worn by the infectious source and in limiting the exposure when worn by the exposed person. 

People with respiratory symptoms (coughing or sneezing) are strongly recommended to wear a medical face mask irrespective of the requirements on that particular flight. 

Physical Distancing

Physical distancing, alongside the proper wearing of face masks, has proven among the most effective non-pharmaceutical interventions to prevent SARS-CoV-2 (including VOCs) transmission. Physical distancing should be encouraged in all airport areas, the arrival terminal (with a particular focus for the meet and greet area) and around the baggage carousels. Signage and communication material should continue to encourage physical distancing where possible. 

However, implementation experience has shown that in some cases, strict physical distancing measures in the aviation environment (airport and aircraft) is not operationally feasible and creates additional unintended bottlenecks in other areas, increasing the exposure times and leading to operational delays touching the flight time limitation requirements and, consequently, flight safety. Physical distancing could therefore be added to the use of face masks where operationally feasible and where it does not result in additional crowding in other areas. If physical distancing measures cannot be implemented, the use of face masks should be encouraged for passengers. 

PPE For Airline / Airport Crew + Staff

Airport operators, aircraft operators and service providers/suppliers should provide the necessary PPE to their staff members and ensure that they are trained in its appropriate use: 

— Staff members who interact with passengers directly (e.g. cabin crew members, security check agents, assistants for passengers with reduced mobility, cleaning staff, etc.) should be encouraged to properly wear a medical face mask or, where available and the legal framework permits, a higher-standard face mask (e.g. FFP2/N95/KN95 respirators). 

— Staff should be encouraged to practise respiratory hygiene at all times as well as frequent hand hygiene, either via appropriate hand-washing or by applying an alcohol-based hand disinfectant. The use of a protective gown or a one-use plastic apron can be considered for tasks that may expose staff to splashes. 

— Flight crew members should be encouraged to wear a face mask whenever interacting with, or in the proximity of, other people. Once they are in the flight compartment and the door is closed, flight crew members may remove their masks subject to their operator’s policy and mutual agreement. Furthermore, the flight’s crew members should remove their masks for emergency situations and whenever requested by appropriate authorities for official purposes such as identification or alcohol testing. 

— Aircraft operators should have on board one or more Universal Precaution Kits (UPKs. Such kits should be used by crew members who are assisting passengers with COVID-

Malaysia : No More COVID-19 Test / Insurance For Travellers!

Travellers to Malaysia will NO LONGER be required to undergo pre-departure and on-arrival testing for COVID-19, or purchase travel insurance!

 

Malaysia : No More COVID-19 Test For Most Travellers!

On 27 April 2022, the Malaysia Minister of Health Khairy Jamaluddin announced a wide range of COVID-19 liberalisation moves :

Starting Sunday, May 1, 2022, these groups of travellers will NO LONGER be required to undergo pre-departure testing and on-arrival testing for COVID-19!

  • Fully-vaccinated individuals who are 13 years or older
  • Individuals who recovered from COVID-19 in the last 6-60 days
  • Individuals who are 12 years or younger, regardless of vaccination status

This ruling applies to both Malaysian citizens, as well as foreigners, including those performing the Hat and even foreign workers.

Please note that ALL travellers must still submit information through the Travellers option in MySejahtera, and obtain the Travellers digital card.

Travellers who are 13 years or older, and are not yet fully vaccinated, must continue with the existing testing and quarantine protocol :

  • Not vaccinated with medical exemption : pre-departure PCR test within 2 days, professional RTK-Ag within 24 hours of arrival, no quarantine.
  • Partially-vaccinated / unvaccinated (13-17 yo) : pre-departure PCR test within 2 days, professional RTK-Ag within 24 hours of arrival, no quarantine.
  • Partially vaccinated / unvaccinated : pre-departure PCR test within 2 days, professional RTK-Ag within 24 hours of arrival, 5-day quarantine.
  • Partially vaccinated / unvaccinated post COVID-19 : pre-departure professional RTK-Ag within 2 days (or Fit To Travel letter if hospitalised), professional RTK-Ag within 24 hours of arrival, 5-day quarantine.

Travellers who test positive on arrival in Malaysia will be asked to undergo a professional RTK-Ag test on-the-spot.

Malaysia : No More COVID-19 Insurance For Foreign Travellers!

Foreign travellers were earlier required to purchase COVID-19 and travel insurance with coverage of at least US$20,000 before travelling to Malaysia.

Only these groups are earlier exempted from the requirement to purchase COVID-19 and travel insurance :

  • Fully-vaccinated citizens of Singapore or Malaysia
  • Fully-vaccinated permanent residents of Singapore or Malaysia
  • Fully-vaccinated Long-term Pass Holders of Singapore or Malaysia

That changes from Sunday, May 1, 2022 onwards – the US$20K travel insurance requirement is NO LONGER REQUIRED for ALL foreign travellers!

So foreigners can travel to Malaysia without that additional cost. Of course, getting travel insurance is always a good idea.

Sinovac / Sinopharm Recipients To Get Second Booster Dose!

Sinovac and Sinopharm recipients will be allowed to get a second booster dose!

Here is what you need to know…

 

Sinovac / Sinopharm Recipients To Get Second Booster Dose!

On 14 April 2022, the Malaysia Ministry of Health announced that they will offer a second booster dose to high-risk individuals, to improve their protection against COVID-19!

In addition, they will also offer recipients of the Sinovac or Sinopharm vaccines the opportunity to get a second booster dose.

The second booster dose will be the Pfizer COMIRNATY vaccine, and it will be given at least 1 month after the first booster dose for Sinovac / SInopharm recipients.

This second booster dose is optional, and is not compulsory. Your vaccination status will not change, whether you take the second booster dose or not.

However, it will facilitate overseas travel for Sinovac and Sinopharm recipients because many countries do not recognise either vaccines.

Should Sinovac / Sinopharm Recipients Get Second Booster Dose?

If you are a Sinovac or Sinopharm recipient and need to travel overseas, you should definitely get the second booster dose.

Both vaccines have been EUA-qualified by the WHO. However, quite a number of countries do not recognise the Sinovac or Sinopharm vaccines, due to their lower efficacy.

The massive RECoVaM study, for example, showed that the Sinovac vaccine’s limited efficacy quickly waned after just 2 months. And that wasn’t even against the highly-contagious Omicron variant.

Even Sinovac recipients who receive a Pfizer booster dose may not obtain sufficient protection against the Omicron variant. A recent Yale University study showed that Sinovac vaccine recipients will require TWO Pfizer booster doses, to adequately protect against the Omicron variant.

So if you have the opportunity to get the second booster dose, take it. Even if the country you intend to visit recognises the Sinovac / Sinopharm vaccine, you will better protect yourself against COVID-19 by getting the second booster dose.

Air Travel to Malaysia : Test + Quarantine SOP For April 2022!

Malaysia Air Travel Test + Quarantine SOP From 1 April 2022!

On 9 March 2022, the Malaysia Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, announced that new quarantine rules for travellers to Malaysia.

These COVID-19 test and quarantine rules take effect from Friday, 1 April 2022 onwards.

But there have been a few updates, so check the latest requirements below!

A. Travellers Undergoing Quarantine : Immediate Release!

For travellers who started undergoing quarantine prior to 1 April 2022, their quarantine orders will be rescinded on 1 April 2022.

They will no longer be under quarantine on 1 April 2022, irrespective of when they started their quarantine.

B. Children + Teenagers : No Quarantine!

Children and teenagers who are 17 years old or younger do NOT need to undergo quarantine, irrespective of their vaccination status.

Only children and teenagers 7-17 years old need to undergo :

  • a PCR test within 48 hours before departure to Malaysia, and
  • a professional RTK-Ag test within 24 hours of arrival in Malaysia.

Children who are less than 7 years old do not need to undergo any PCR test before departure, or after arrival in Malaysia.

C. Travellers From Singapore : No Quarantine!

Travellers from Singapore do NOT need to undergo quarantine, irrespective of their vaccination status. However, travellers 7 years and older age need to undergo :

  • a PCR or professional RTK-Ag test within 48 hours before departure to Malaysia

Children who are less than 7 years old do not need to undergo any PCR or RTK-Ag test before departure.

And all travellers from Singapore are exempt from testing after arrival in Malaysia.

D. Vaccinated Adults : No Quarantine!

Fully-vaccinated adults (18 years and older), with or without a booster dose, do NOT need to undergo quarantine on arrival in Malaysia. However, they must undergo :

  • a PCR test within 48 hours before departure to Malaysia, and
  • a professional RTK-Ag test within 24 hours of arrival in Malaysia.

E. Vaccinated + Post COVID-19 : No Quarantine!

Fully-vaccinated individuals who recovered from COVID-19 (infected in the last 6-60 days) do NOT need to undergo quarantine on arrival in Malaysia.

However, if they were not hospitalised, they must undergo :

  • a professional RTK-Ag test within 48 hours before departure to Malaysia, and
  • a professional RTK-Ag test within 24 hours of arrival in Malaysia.

If they were hospitalised, they can use a Fit To Travel letter from the hospital.

F. Unvaccinated with Medical Exemption : No Quarantine!

Unvaccinated individuals with a medical exemption will be allowed, on a case-by-case basis, to travel to Malaysia without a mandatory quarantine.

However, they must undergo :

  • a PCR test within 48 hours before departure to Malaysia, and
  • a professional RTK-Ag test within 24 hours of arrival in Malaysia.

G. Unvaccinated Adults : 5 Day Quarantine

Adult travellers (18 years and older) who are not fully-vaccinated, or completely unvaccinated, must :

  • undergo a 5-day mandatory quarantine on arrival in Malaysia, and
  • undergo a PCR test on Day 4, or a professional RTK-Ag test on Day 5.

After completing their quarantine, these travellers must comply with existing restrictions on individuals who lack the Fully Vaccinated status in Malaysia. For example, they will not be able to dine-in at restaurants.

Travellers who are exempt from vaccination for health reasons must upload the evidence of medical exemption into the MySejahtera app.

H. Unvaccinated + Post COVID-19 : 5 Day Quarantine

Unvaccinated individuals who recovered from COVID-19 (infected in the last 6-60 days) must:

  • undergo a 5-day mandatory quarantine on arrival in Malaysia, and
  • undergo a PCR test on Day 4, or a professional RTK-Ag test on Day 5.

If they were not hospitalised, they must undergo :

  • a professional RTK-Ag test within 48 hours before departure to Malaysia, and
  • a professional RTK-Ag test within 24 hours of arrival in Malaysia.

If they were hospitalised, they can use a Fit To Travel letter from the hospital.

 

Latest Malaysia Air Travel Procedure From 1 April 2022!

On 24 March 2022, the Malaysia Ministry of Health issued the official procedure for travellers who arrive by air, that will take effect from 1 April 2022 onwards.

Before Departure

  1. Download the MySejahtera app, and register for your MySejahtera account.
  2. Click on the Traveller icon in MySejahtera, and complete the pre-departure form
    a) fully-vaccinated travellers will receive a Digital Traveller’s Card
    b) partially vaccinated / unvaccinated travellers will receive a Digital Home Surveillance Order (HSO).
  3. All travellers 7 years and above must undergo a PCR test 2 days before departure.
  4. Travellers from Singapore can opt for either a PCR test or a professional RTK-Ag test 2 days before departure.
  5. Those who had a previous COVID-19 infection (within 6-60 days before departure) must undergo a professional RTK-Ag test 2 days before departure, or alternatively, have a Free-To-Travel letter if they were hospitalised for COVID-19 during that time.
  6. Non-Malaysian citizens (except Singaporean citizens) must purchase travel and COVID-19 insurance worth at least US$20,000.
  7. Partially-vaccinated or unvaccinated Singaporean citizens must purchase travel and COVID-19 insurance worth at least US$20,000.

On Arrival

  1. All travellers 7 years and above must undergo a professional RTK-Ag test within 24 hours of arrival in Malaysia.
    a) this professional RTK-Ag test can be performed at any health facility of your choice
    b) COVID-19 breathalyser / professional RTK-Ag tests are available at the airport
    c) Cost of on-arrival RTK-Ag test must be borne by the travellers.
  2. Children below the age of 7, and travellers from Singapore are exempted from the on-arrival test.
  3. Partially-vaccinated / unvaccinated travellers must undergo a mandatory 5-day quarantine.
  4. IMPORTANT : Travellers transiting through Malaysian international airports to Sabah or Sarawak must undergo professional RTK-Ag at the airport, before departing.

Testing Positive On Arrival

If you test positive on arrival, you must undergo a mandatory quarantine of :

  • Fully vaccinated : 7 days
  • Partially vaccinated / unvaccinated : 10 days

Testing Positive During Quarantine

If you are a partially vaccinated / unvaccinated traveller, you will need to undergo a 5-day quarantine, and get tested on Day 4 (PCR) or Day 5 (RTK-Ag).

If you test positive on Day 4 or Day 5, your quarantine will get extended for 5 more days.

Malaysia and Singapore just announced that they will reopen their joint land border on 1 April 2022!

Malaysia + Singapore To Reopen Land Border On 1 April 2022!

On 24 March 2022, the governments of Malaysia and Singapore announced that they will reopen their common land border on 1 April 2022!

Start 1 April 2022, all fully-vaccinated travellers will be allowed to cross from Malaysia to Singapore, and vice versa, without the need to

  • apply for entry approval
  • under quarantine
  • take a pre-departure test
  • take an on-arrival test

This travel liberalisation will apply to all travellers, regardless of nationality and the medium of transportation.

This announcement will restore land travel between Malaysia and Singapore to how it was pre-pandemic, which will greatly boost trade and tourism.

Many Malaysians and Singaporeans will also be able to meet up with friends and family members in the other country.

Malaysia + Singapore Land Border Travel : Only For Fully-Vaccinated!

Please note that this only applies to FULLY-VACCINATED travellers, who received a full regimen of a COVID-19 vaccine in the WHO Emergency Use Listing.

However, there is good news for those who received a COVID-19 vaccine that is NOT in the WHO Emergency Use Listing. Malaysia will accept these “unapproved” COVID-19 vaccines :

  • Zifivax : China, Indonesia, Pakistan
  • Minhai : China, Indonesia
  • CoviVac : Cambodia, Russia
  • Median : Taiwan
  • ZyCoV-D : India
  • Turkovac : Turkey
  • Covifenz : Canada

Just make sure you bring the relevant digital or physical COVID-19 vaccination certificate to prove that you are fully-vaccinated!

Singapore – Malaysia VTL Suspended Due To Omicron Variant!

Malaysia has temporarily suspended the VTL (Vaccinated Travel Lane) with Singapore, due to the Omicron variant!

Singapore – Malaysia VTL : What Is It?

Announced in November 2021, the Singapore – Malaysia VTL (Vaccinated Travel Lane) allows fully-vaccinated citizens of both countries to travel, without being subjected to a mandatory quarantine.

There are currently two VTL (Vaccinated Travel Lane) options between Singapore and Malaysia :

  • By Air : Between Changi Airport in Singapore, and KLIA in Malaysia
  • By Land : At the Johor Bahru Causeway.

Singapore – Malaysia VTL Suspended Due To Omicron Variant!

On 22 December 2021, the Malaysia Minister of Health, Khairy Jamaluddin announced a temporary suspension of the Singapore – Malaysia VTL, due to the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

In his statement, he pointed out that the Singapore Ministry of Health announced a local cluster of three COVID-19 cases, of which two were likely of the Omicron variant, while the other case is still pending. All three cases did not have history of overseas travel.

In light of that development, the Malaysia Ministry of Health (KKM) decided to temporarily suspend the VTL with Singapore from Thursday, 23 December, 2021 until Thursday, 20 January 2022.

Travellers who have already purchased tickets for Land or Air VTL, and still comply with the VTL requirements can continue with their travel plans.

Bus and plane ticket sales for both Air and Land VTL initiatives will reopen on 21 January 2022, after a risk assessment is conducted in both countries. However, the ticket quota will be lower than the current limit.

CMCO Extended For 7 States / Territories, And Ends For 4!

The Malaysia National Security Council (MKN) just announced that CMCO will be extended in 7 states / territories, and will end for 4 other states / territories.

Here is the list of states and territories where CMCO is extended, and where they will end!

 

Areas Where CMCO Is Extended To 31 December 2020

With daily highs in COVID-19 cases, the Malaysian National Security Council (MKN) announced another extension of the CMCO / PKPB lockdown of these states and territories.

This extended CMCO / PKPB lockdown will start at 12:01 AM on 21 December 2020 and end on 31 December 2020.

 

Areas Where CMCO Will End On 20 December 2020

On the other hand, the situation has improved in these areas, and their CMCO / PKPB lockdown will end on 20 December 2020.

  • Kulim district, Kedah
  • Changkat Jong in Perak
  • Kubang Kerian, Kota Bharu, Kusial, Tanah Merah in Kelantan
  • Kota Tinggi in Johor

 

Peninsular Malaysia CMCO : New December 2020 SOP!

Here is the new, updated MKN SOP on what’s allowed and what’s not allowed in CMCO / PKPB areas in Peninsular Malaysia :

GENERAL

  • Nationwide travel is allowed, except to EMCO (PKPD) areas.
  • Private and commercial vehicles are allowed to carry up to their maximum passenger capacity.
  • High risk individuals and children are not encouraged to go out.
  • All activities and services at airports and ports are allowed.
  • Public transportation, like buses, express buses, LRT / MRT / ERL / Monorail / ferry / airlines / taxi / e-hailing vehicles are allowed to operate as normal.
  • Food delivery services are allowed to operate from 6 AM until 12 AM.

ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES

  • All business, economic and industrial activity can proceed as usual.
  • Businesses must ensure that customers are physically distanced by 1 meter while entering or leaving their premises.
  • Businesses must limit the number of customers within their premise, and publicly display the maximum number of customers allowed inside.
  • Businesses must ensure that customers check in using MySejahtera or write in the logbook.
  • Businesses must scan the body temperature of customers, and those with a body temperature of 37.5 °C are not permitted to enter.
  • All employees, suppliers and customers must wear a face mask at all times.
  • Supermarkets, shopping malls and retail stores are allowed, between 6 AM and 12 AM.
  • Restaurants, food stores, food trucks, hawkers, food courts, food stalls, food kiosks, groceries and convenience stores are allowed to open from 6 AM until 12 AM.
  • Dine-in is allowed, with 1 meter distance between every person.
  • Daily, wholesale, farmer’s and night markets are allowed to open until 12 AM.
  • Petrol stations are allowed to open from 6 AM until 12 AM, except for those on highways – they can open 24 hours
  • Laundry services are allowed between 6 AM and 12 AM.
  • All other permitted businesses are allowed to operate between 6 AM and 12 AM.
  • All other essential activities NOT listed in the Negative List are permitted, subject to the existing SOPs.

The Malaysia National Security Council has decided to allow nationwide travel at vehicle capacity from 7 December 2020 onwards!

Find out what this means, and what is the SOP we need to comply with when we travel!

 

Nationwide Travel Allowed At Vehicle Capacity From 7 December 2020

Malaysia continues to record an average of about a thousand new COVID-19 cases every day, with over 74,000 COVID-19 cases so far.

However, even the lenient CMCO / PKPB lockdown is taking a toll on the economy, with an expected GDP loss of RM 300 million a day.

So, the Malaysia National Security Council decided to lift travel restrictions, and vehicle passenger limits.

  • Interstate and inter-district travel are now allowed (except in EMCO areas).
  • The existing roadblocks at state borders will be removed.
  • There is no longer the need to obtain police permission to travel.
  • Travel into and out from CMCO / PKPB areas are allowed.
  • There is no limit on the number of passengers in a vehicle, subject to its maximum capacity.

In the newly released 7 December 2020 SOP, they also lifted the prior limitation that only 3 persons per household can leave the house.

 

Nationwide Travel At Vehicle Capacity : Please Follow SOP!

While nationwide travel is now allowed at full vehicle capacity, the government is reminding everyone to comply with the SOP.

The police will be focusing on enforcing the SOP, instead of controlling interstate or inter-district travel.

So what are the key SOPs that we must comply with?

  1. Wear a face mask in public places at all times.
  2. Wear a face mask in public vehicles (not necessary in private vehicles)
  3. Practice social distancing in public places – at least 1 metre apart.
  4. Maintain good hand hygiene with soap and water, or a hand sanitiser.
  5. Always log your public movements with MySejahtera or a manual logbook.

You should also do your best to avoid crowded places, especially public events.

Please remember that many of those who are infected and contagious are not symptomatic.

Umance, who sold it to over 9000 people, insists it is not a scam, and is now offering a replacement deal instead.

RM399 Laguna Redang 3D2N Holiday : A Umance Offer

Umance is an entrepreneur who made his name selling seafood online, but appears to be branching out into the hospitality business.

For Singles Day on 11/11, he offered a 3D2N holiday at the Laguna Redang Island Resort for only RM399 (~US$99), with 7 meals included!

 

Laguna Redang Island Resort : Umance Offer Is A Scam!

After Umance sold his RM399 holiday package to over 9000 customers, Laguna Redang Island Resort denounced him as a fraudster.

Umance has disputed this. Here is a rough timeline of what happened.

11 November @ 1:57 PM

Laguna Redang Island Resort issued a terse announcement that they do not endorse, and neither are they participating, in any third-party 11/11 event or Facebook live event.

It has come to our attention that there are companies falsely advertising for our package, we wish to clarify that Laguna Redang Island Resort do not endorse nor participate in any third party 11.11 event or Facebook live event.

11 November @ 6:31 PM

In a second announcement, Laguna Redang Island Resort did not authorise the deal, or consented to it.

Dear Valued Guest(s),

It has recently come to our attention and knowledge that there has been a deal circulating in Facebook in relation to the stays package(s) by promoting and/or selling with conditions of non-expiry permanent tickets, waiver of surcharges, under name of Laguna Redang Island Resort.

Kindly be informed that Laguna Redang Island Resort has never come to consensus in approval, authorized and/or consented to such deal or transaction.

We reserve all our rights. Any inconvenience caused is utterly regretted.

This screenshot of a bank transfer of RM 100,000 from Ricksman MS Sdn Bhd (Umance’s company) to Laguna Redang Travel was shared online, as evidence that Umance had indeed booked those rooms.

12 November @ 11:10 PM

Laguna Redang Island Resort confirmed that they received RM 100,000 on 11 November 2020.

However, they insisted that they never agreed to the deal, and asked the bank to reject and return the sum.

They also insisted that Umance was a fraudster impersonating as an agent of Laguna Redang Island Resort, and asked those who purchased it to lodge a police report.

LAGUNA REDANG ISLAND RESORT (“LAGUNA”) would like to alert the public of fraudsters pretending to be agents of LAGUNA in order to defraud the holiday makers of their money. These fraudsters will defraud the public online or through social media and impersonate as agent of LAGUNA with “attractive packages” which are obviously NOT offered by LAGUNA.

Please note that LAGUNA has no connection with such deceptive practices, and does not, under any circumstances, offered such “attractive packages” nor request anyone to transfer funds to bank accounts that are not under LAGUNA’s name.

On the recent incident circulating in Facebook in relation to an “attractive packages” offered, LAGUNA would like to alert the public that LAGUNA has no connection with such “attractive packages” nor has offered and/or authorized and/or consented to such “attractive packages”. An unauthorized sum of RM100,000.00 was banked into

LAGUNA’s bank account on 11 November 2020 without LAGUNA’s knowledge and authorization and LAGUNA had on 12 November 2020 instructed the bank to reject the receipt of the said sum of RM100,000.00 and requested the bank to remit the said sum of RM100,000.00 into the sender’s account.

For those who have conducted transaction with the suspected fraudsters, please report the matter to the police immediately as LAGUNA has lodged a police report on 11 November 2020 to protect our interest and to prevent further fraud.

 

Umance Replaces Laguna Redang with Tanjung Rhu Langkawi!

At around 5:30 PM on 14 November 2020, Umance posted a video, in which he reiterated that it was not a scam.

However, due to technical issues (likely Laguna Redang refusing his booking), he will fully refund all purchases, or replace it with a 3D2N holiday in the Tanjung Rhu Resort in Langkawi.

In a second video, he shared that the Tanjung Rhu 3D2N holiday package will be managed by Fantastic Tour Services Shd. Bhd. with these features :

  • Tanjung Rhu Resort room on a twin-sharing basis
  • includes 1 day Langkawi road tour
  • includes 3 meals x 2 days
  • no expiry date + ability to change name or date
  • free luggage bag with every 2 tickets

He also offered this Tanjung Rhu 3D2N holiday package to those who missed the earlier offer, at RM399 per person or RM798 per room.

 

Laguna Redang To Tanjung Rhu : Bait & Switch Scam?

While the Tanjung Rhu Resort offer seems like a great deal, sharp-eyed netizens pointed out that Fantastic Tour itself is offering a much better deal at only RM244 per person!

You would actually save RM355 (39%) per room if you purchase the Tanjung Rhu deal directly from Fantastic Tour Langkawi themselves, albeit without free meals and different freebies.

This makes the whole RM399 Laguna Redang holiday package look suspiciously like a bait-and-switch scam.

In such scams, customers are “baited” with an incredibly good offer, but later they will discover that what they purchased was no longer available.

That’s when the “switch” happens – you are persuaded to accept a cheaper replacement instead of a refund, or upgrade to a more expensive alternative.

While we cannot be 100% sure it is a bait-and-switch, it is interesting how fast Umance came up with the Tanjung Rhu replacement package.

Heck, he was actually in Langkawi today to record his Facebook Live video with his team, and both reps from Tanjung Rhu Resort and Fantastic Tour!

One thing’s for sure – Umance is a businessman, and businessmen don’t go into the business to lose money… Caveat emptor! Buyers beware!

MKN : 3 People Now Allowed In Car During CMCO / PKPB

MKN just announced that 3 people are now allowed in the same car during the CMCO / PKPB lockdown. Here is what you need to know!

 

Earlier : Only 2 People Allowed In Car During CMCO / PKPB

When the Malaysian National Security Council (MKN) announced the CMCO / PKPB SOP for Peninsular Malaysia, they only allowed two people from the same household to travel in the same car.

Only TWO (2) people are allowed to leave (including inside / on a vehicle).

That limitation has led to complaints that it unfairly disadvantages single parents, and people with elderly parents.

Single parents may not be able to leave their children unattended at home, and be forced to bring them out, when they have to buy food or essentials.

Those with elderly parents may need another person to help attend to their parent whenever they send them for medical treatment, for example.

 

Now : 3 People Allowed In Car During CMCO / PKPB

In a special press conference on 13 November 2020, the MKN announced that they agreed to loosen the requirement.

They will now allow 3 people from the same household to travel in the same car during the CMCO / PKPB lockdown.

However, please note that they did NOT change the limitation on the number of people from the same household dining in restaurants / cafes / eateries.

Unless they change that limit too, only TWO (2) people per household are allowed to dine in at restaurants / cafes / eateries.

Scan MySejahtera At Petrol Station, Or Get Fined RM1K?

CPRC says it’s not mandatory, but PDRM says you can be fined RM1,000 for failing to register MySejahtera at the petrol station!

So which is it? After flip-flopping, they finally clarified their stance… hopefully, for the LAST TIME!

 

Register MySejahtera At Petrol Station, Or Get Fined RM1K?

According to PDRM, you must register MySejahtera at the petrol station, even if you do not enter the convenience store! Otherwise, you could be subject to a RM1,000 fine!

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department deputy director DCP Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid confirmed this, saying “If the people do not register or scan, how will the police trace them if there are Covid-19 cases in the area?

As petrol stations are high-traffic public spaces, it is mandatory to register your visit using MySejahtera, as well as wear a face mask have your temperature scanned, and use a hand sanitiser.

However, it appears that petrol station operators may not be aware of this requirement either, as they do not put up MySejahtera QR codes at their pumps for motorists to register their visits…

 

But Didn’t CPRC Say MySejahtera Not Necessary At Petrol Station?

This email shows the CPRC (Crisis Preparedness and Respose Centre) team saying that it is NOT necessary to register your visit using MySejahtera if you are merely refuelling at the pump or making payments.

Sadly, it appears that CPRC and PDRM are not on the same page. CPRC says it’s not necessary, but PDRM insists it is mandatory.

 

Latest MySejahtera SOP For Petrol Stations : To Scan Or Not?

On 10 November 2020, Malaysia’s Senior Minister for Security Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri, issued an updated SOP on the use of MySejahtera in petrol stations in this press conference.

Here is a summary of the updated MySejahtera SOP for petrol stations :

MUST Scan MySejahtera / Register Manually

  • Making payments or purchases inside the petrol station’s convenience store.
  • Using the ATM machines inside the petrol station’s convenience store.
  • Using the petrol station’s toilet or surau.
  • Sending your car to the petrol station’s workshop.
  • Sending you car for a manual car wash.

DO NOT Need To Scan MySejahtera / Register Manually

  • Self-serving at the pump, and paying using their credit or debit cards or online app.
  • Paying the cashier through the pigeonhole.
  • Self-inflating your own tyres.
  • Using the auto car wash, unless you are paying inside the petrol station’s convenience store.

MySejahtera : Why Use It At Petrol Station?

MySejahtera is a mobile app developed by the Malaysian government. It serves as a contact tracing tool, as well as a way to disseminate verified information on COVID-19 in Malaysia.

Its users can log their movements by quickly and simply scanning a QR code at public places. This is a safer option to signing a logbook, because you won’t need to touch the logbook or use a shared pen.

Even though petrol pumps in Malaysia are generally self-served, petrol stations are high traffic public areas with pump attendants and employees, as well as other customers, who may be infected.

Registering your visit with MySejahtera at the petrol station will allow the authorities to quickly and accurately perform contact tracing if any infected person was at the petrol station.

That’s why they made it mandatory to register your visit with MySejahtera at the petrol station, even if you don’t enter the convenience store.

With record highs in COVID-19 cases, the Malaysian National Security Council announced a 4-week CMCO / PKPB lockdown of KL, Putrajaya, and all states in Peninsular Malaysia, except for Perlis, Pahang and Kelantan.

  • North : Kedah, Penang, Perak
  • East : Terengganu
  • Central : Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya
  • South : Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor

This expansive CMCO / PKPB lockdown will start at 12:01 AM on 9 November 2020 and end on 6 December 2020.

 

Peninsular Malaysia : Official CMCO / PKPB SOP!

Here is the confirmed MKN SOP on what’s allowed and what’s not allowed during the CMCO / PKPB lockdown of Peninsular Malaysia :

GENERAL

  • Only two persons from each household are allowed to go out to purchase food supplies or daily necessities.
  • Only two persons from each household are allowed to dine-in at any restaurant / cafe.
  • High risk individuals and children are not encouraged to go out.
  • No one is allowed to enter or leave the areas under CMCO lockdown.
  • Interstate travel is forbidden, except for work, economic or industrial purposes.
  • Emergency cases and accidents requiring medical treatment are allowed to travel without police permission.
  • Those with medical appointments are allowed to travel, by showing the referral letter or appointment card.
  • Funerals outside of CMCO areas are allowed, with police permission.
  • Workers will need a valid work pass or letter of permission from their employers to get past state and district roadblocks.
  • Employers must let their employees work from home, unless they are essential to business continuity.
  • Individuals who intend to travel by air must obtain prior permission from the police before they head to the airport.
  • Residents of CMCO areas are allowed to return from outstation, with the permission of the police.
  • Travel through the CMCO areas to non-CMCO areas are allowed, with permission from the nearest police station.

ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES

  • All business, economic and industrial activity can proceed as usual.
  • Businesses must ensure that customers are physically distanced by 1 meter while entering or leaving their premises.
  • Businesses must limit the number of customers within their premise, and publicly display the maximum number of customers allowed inside.
  • Supermarkets, shopping malls and retail stores are allowed, between 6 AM and 12 AM.
  • Restaurants, food stores, food trucks, hawkers, food courts, food stalls, food kiosks, groceries and convenience stores are allowed to open from 6 AM until 12 AM.
  • Dine-in is allowed but limited to 2 persons per small table or 4 persons per large table, but must follow the Food Sector SOP. There should be 1 meter distance between every person.
    Only in Selangor : 5 persons per large table meant for 10 people.
    * Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced the change on 16 October 2020.
  • Food deliveries, drive-through purchases and food take-aways are encouraged.
  • Daily markets are allowed to open from 6 AM until 2 PM.
  • Wholesale markets are allowed to open from 12 AM until 5 PM.
  • Farmer’s markets are allowed to open from 6 AM until 12 PM.
  • Night markets are allowed to open from 4 PM until 12 AM.
  • Petrol stations are allowed to open from 6 AM until 12 AM, except for those on highways – they can open 24 hours
  • Laundry services are allowed between 6 AM and 12 AM.
  • All other permitted businesses are allowed to operate between 6 AM and 12 AM.
  • Public buses, express buses, MRT, LRT, ERL, Monorail, taxi and e-hailing services are allowed to operate.
  • Taxis and e-hailing vehicles are limited to 2 passengers, and allowed to operate from 6 AM until 12 midnight.
  • Food deliveries are allowed to operate from 6 AM until 12 midnight.
  • All transportation and delivery vehicles involved in industry, business, and manufacturing are allowed to continue as normal, including cross-district and cross-state travel.

Recommended : CMCO Business Activities Extended To 12 AM, Except Sabah!

HEALTHCARE

  • Public and private clinics and hospitals are allowed to open 24 hours.
  • Pharmacies and drugstores are allowed to open from 8 AM until 11 PM.

FISHING, FARMING, PLANTATION INDUSTRIES

  • The fishing, farming, plantation, livestock and related food chain industries are allowed to operate.

PORTS + AIRPORTS

  • All ports and airport services are allowed to operate.
  • Individuals who intend to travel by air must obtain prior permission from the police before heading to the airport.

RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES

  • Religious activities in mosques and suraus are allowed with limits to the number of participants, according to the state authorities
  • Religious activities in other houses of worship are allowed with limited to the number of participants, according to MKN / MOH / state or federal authorities.
  • Akad nikah ceremonies are allowed with a maximum limit of 30 people, based on the area and physical distancing, or as set by the state religious authorities.
  • Wedding registration ceremonies for non-Muslims are allowed with a maximum limit of 30 people, based on the area and physical distancing.

ENTERTAINMENT, RECREATION + CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

  • Entertainment centres, pubs and night clubs are forbidden to open.
  • Theme parks, indoor playgrounds and cinemas are forbidden to open.

CREATIVE INDUSTRY

  • Recording activities for music, concerts, filming, interviews, and so on are allowed both in studios and outdoors, limited to CMCO areas with limited crew and no audience, according to the SOP.
  • Live event activities are permitted without an audience, with limited crew set by MOH.
  • Busking activities in indoor locations are allowed, based on time limits and limited number of audience, as set by MOH.
  • All other activities NOT listed in the Negative List are permitted, based on the existing SOP.

SPORTS + RECREATION

  • Individual sporting activities and non-contact recreation or those performed individually and not involving more than 10 people, like walking, jogging, cycling, aerobics, hiking, fishing, and so on are permitted.
  • Picnics, swimming pool activities and contact sports are forbidden.
  • Certain commercial sports facilities – gyms, football fields, futsal courts, badminton halls – are allowed to open from 6 AM until 10 PM, starting 19 October 2020.
  • Commercial field and futsal facilities are limited to training activities that do not involve physical contact and limited to up to 10 people at any one time.
  • Sporting events and competitions with spectators and/or with participants from other states are forbidden.
  • Training programs by the National Sports Council and state sports councils can continue according to a Quarantine Based Approach.

EDUCATION

  • All public and private schools, institutions of higher learning, vocational training institutes, kindergartens, day care centres, tahfiz centres, public parks and recreation centres must close.
  • Only nurseries and childcare centres with permission to remain open for frontliners and working parents can remain open.
  • Students who are undergoing exams are permitted to continue taking their exams.

SEMINARS / WORKSHOPS / CONFERENCES

  • All seminars, workshops, courses, training, conferences, lectures and MICE (Meeting, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) are forbidden.
  • Face to face meetings are discouraged, and should be held through video conferencing, with these exceptions :
    – face-to-face meetings involving expatriate and C Suite with physical distancing and face masks
    – internal meetings according to JPA circulars and MITI guidelines

CELEBRATIONS

  • Official and unofficial government and private ceremonies, and social events like weddings, banquets, engagement parties, aqiqah ceremonies, tahlil, birthdays, anniversary parties, reunions are forbidden.

TOURISM

  • All domestic tourism activities that cross into or out of the CMCO areas are forbidden.
  • Tour companies are allowed to operate, based on existing SOP.
  • Hotels are allowed to provide accommodation.
  • Restaurants, including F&B outlets and lounges are allowed. Dine-in is limited to 2 persons per table. Room service, take-aways and food delivery are encouraged.
  • Swimming pool, gym, seminar rooms, halls are not allowed to operate.

 

COVID-19 : How To Keep Safe!

Here are a few simple steps to stay safe :

  • Avoid suspected cases or disease hotpots, like hospitals, if possible!
  • Avoid public events and crowds
  • Keep our hands clean with soap or hand sanitiser
  • Keep our homes, offices, vehicles, etc. clean
  • If you need to wear a surgical mask, make sure you put it on and remove it properly!
  • Wash your food with water (and soap) after purchase and before preparation

Peninsular Malaysia : CMCO / PKPB Lockdown Until 6 December!

With record highs in COVID-19 cases, the Malaysian National Security Council announced a 4-week CMCO / PKPB lockdown of KL, Putrajaya, and all states in Peninsular Malaysia, except for Perlis, Pahang and Kelantan.

This expansive CMCO / PKPB lockdown will start at 12:01 AM on 9 November 2020 and end on 6 December 2020.

To be specific, this newly-announced CMCO / PKPB lockdown will affect these states and federal territories :

  • North : Kedah, Penang, Perak
  • East : Terengganu
  • Central : Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya
  • South : Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor

 

Peninsular Malaysia CMCO : Same SOP As Klang Valley CMCO?

The Malaysia National Security Council has not announced any special SOP for this new CMCO / PKPB.

Assuming they adopt the same CMCO / PKPB SOP for Klang Valley, here are some SOP we can expect :

  • All business, economic and industrial activity can proceed as usual.
  • Businesses must ensure that customers are physically distanced by 1 meter while entering or leaving their premises.
  • Businesses must limit the number of customers within their premise, and publicly display the maximum number of customers allowed inside.
  • Supermarkets, shopping malls and retail stores are allowed, but must follow the established SOP.
  • Restaurants, food stores, food trucks, hawkers, food courts, food stalls, food kiosks, groceries and convenience stores are allowed to open from 6 AM until 10 PM.
  • Dine-in is allowed but limited to 2 persons per small table or 4 persons per large table*, but must follow the Food Sector SOP.
    * Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the change on 15 October 2020.
  • Food deliveries, drive-through purchases and food take-aways are encouraged.
  • Wholesale markets are allowed to open from 4 AM until 2 PM.
  • Daily markets are allowed to open from 6 AM until 2 PM.
  • Farmer’s markets are allowed to open from 6 AM until 12 PM.
  • Night markets are allowed to open from 4 PM until 10 PM.
  • Petrol stations are allowed to open from 6 AM until 10 PM, except for those on highways – they can open 24 hours

Klang Valley CMCO Lockdown Extended To 9 November 2020!

In a move that was not exactly unexpected, the Malaysian government just announced a 2-week extension of the Klang Valley CMCO lockdown!

Instead of ending on 27 October 2020, the CMCO / PKPB lockdown is now extended to 9 November 2020.

 

Klang Valley CMCO / PKPB : Same SOP?

The Malaysian government did not announce any change to the SOP, so the current CMCO / PKPB SOP should apply.

Here are some of the SOP for the CMCO / PKPB in KL, Selangor and Putrajaya :

  • All business, economic and industrial activity can proceed as usual.
  • Businesses must ensure that customers are physically distanced by 1 meter while entering or leaving their premises.
  • Businesses must limit the number of customers within their premise, and publicly display the maximum number of customers allowed inside.
  • Supermarkets, shopping malls and retail stores are allowed, but must follow the established SOP.
  • Restaurants, food stores, food trucks, hawkers, food courts, food stalls, food kiosks, groceries and convenience stores are allowed to open from 6 AM until 10 PM.
  • Dine-in is allowed but limited to 2 persons per small table or 4 persons per large table*, but must follow the Food Sector SOP.
    * Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the change on 15 October 2020.
    Only in Selangor : 5 persons per large table meant for 10 people.
    * Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced the change on 16 October 2020.
  • Food deliveries, drive-through purchases and food take-aways are encouraged.
  • Wholesale markets are allowed to open from 4 AM until 2 PM.
  • Daily markets are allowed to open from 6 AM until 2 PM.
  • Farmer’s markets are allowed to open from 6 AM until 12 PM.
  • Night markets are allowed to open from 4 PM until 10 PM.
  • Petrol stations are allowed to open from 6 AM until 10 PM, except for those on highways – they can open 24 hours
  • Public buses, express buses, MRT, LRT, ERL, Monorail, taxi and e-hailing services are allowed to operate.
  • Taxis and e-hailing vehicles are limited to 2 passengers, and allowed to operate from 6 AM until 12 midnight.

Claim : Wear A Face Mask In Car Or Get Fined RM1,000!

This startling warning went viral on social media, claiming that the Malaysian police are on a rampage, issuing RM1,000 fines to car drivers who do not wear a face mask while driving!

Everyone be very careful as Police are now on the rampage concerning Face Mask.

My friend together with another passenger just got stopped by a group of young Police guys (3 of them) and were issued with summons of RM 1,000 each because the Police say that if you were travelling alone you can be in the car without mask but if more then 1 person everyone in the car MUST wear mask at all times!

 

No, You Won’t Get Fined For Not Wearing A Face Mask In Your Car

This is yet another Internet hoax… for now.

The Malaysia government could, in the future, institute such a requirement, but at the moment – this is NOT TRUE.

That’s why we intentionally placed a HOAX overlay to the screenshot above, to avoid it from being further shared.

Fact #1 : Compulsory Wearing Of Face Mask Only Starts In August!

On 23 July 2020, Senior Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that the face mask will be mandatory in these public spaces starting 1 August 2020.

  • Inside public transportation
  • Crowded public spaces
  • Areas where social distancing is impossible

Those who flout the mandatory face mask rule will be subject to a fine of up to RM 1,000.

However, this new requirement doesn’t start until August, so claims that the police are issuing fines for not wearing a face mask right now are FALSE.

Fact #2 : No Requirement To Wear A Face Mask In Your Own Car

While we will soon be required to wear a face mask in public spaces, there is NO REQUIREMENT to wear a face mask in your own car.

You are only required to wear a face mask inside public transportation, not your own car.

Fact #3 : No Report Of Anyone Getting Fined For Not Wearing Face Masks In Car

The Malaysian police have been actively warning people against breaking the government’s COVID-19 preventive measures.

They even made public massive fines for those who violate the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Regulations 2020.

Yet there has been no report of the police issuing fines for not wearing a face mask inside a car.

Neither would there be such fines because face masks are not yet mandatory, not until August 2020.

Fact #4 : Face Masks Are Required In School Buses / Vans

As per the Malaysia Transportation Ministry SOP issued on 9 July 2020, face masks are mandatory in school buses and vans.

Both the driver, as well as the students, must wear face masks while they are in the school bus / van.

Fact #5 : Face Masks Are Required In Taxis & E-Hailing Vehicles

As per the Malaysia Transportation Ministry SOP issued on 23 June 2020, face masks are mandatory in taxis and e-hailing vehicles.

Malaysia-Singapore Cross-Border Travel To Resume In August

Malaysia and Singapore have agreed to allow limited cross-border travel to resume in August! Here are the details!

 

Malaysia-Singapore Cross-Border Travel To Resume In August

On 14 July 2020, Malaysia and Singapore agreed to allow limited cross-border travel, with a targeted date of 10 August 2020.

They will announce the requirements, health protocols, and application process, by 31 July 2020.

Officials in Malaysia and Singapore will work together towards implementing two schemes by that date :

Reciprocal Green Lane (RGL)

The Reciprocal Green Lane (RGL) scheme is meant for essential business and official purposes. Eligible travellers will have to abide by these requirements :

  • comply with COVID-19 prevention and public health measures of both countries
  • undergo PCR swab tests
  • submit a controlled itinerary to the destination country, and adhere to it

Periodic Commuting Arrangement (PCA)

The Periodic Commuting Arrangement (PCA) scheme is meant for Singapore and Malaysia residents with long-term immigration passes.

They will be permitted to enter the destination country for work, with these privileges :

  • after at least three consecutive months in the country of work, they may return to their home country for a short-term home leave.
  • they can then re-enter their country of work for another period of no less than three consecutive months.

Eligible travellers will also have to abide by the COVID-19 prevention and public health measures of both countries.

 

Future Malaysia-Singapore Cross-Border Travel Schemes

Malaysia and Singapore also announced that they will work to develop other cross-border travel schemes, including a daily cross-border commuting scheme for travellers in both countries.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Singapore Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan are pleased to announce that the Government of Malaysia and the Government of the Republic of Singapore have agreed to implement the Reciprocal Green Lane (RGL) and Periodic Commuting Arrangement (PCA). These two schemes are meant to address the needs of different groups of cross-border travellers between both countries.

The RGL will enable cross-border travel for essential business and official purposes between both countries. Eligible travellers will have to abide by the prevailing COVID-19 prevention and public health measures mutually agreed upon by both countries which include undergoing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) swab tests. Travellers will also be expected to submit to the relevant authorities of the receiving country a controlled itinerary and adhere to this controlled itinerary during their visit.

The PCA will allow Singapore and Malaysia residents, who hold long-term immigration passes for business and work purposes in the other country, to enter that country for work. After at least three consecutive months in their country of work, they may return to their home country for a short-term home leave, and thereafter re-enter their country of work to continue work for at least another three consecutive months. These travellers will also have to abide by the prevailing COVID-19 prevention and public health measures mutually agreed by both countries.

Officials in Malaysia and Singapore are working expeditiously towards the targeted implementation of RGL and PCA on 10 August 2020.  This will give the opportunity for the relevant agencies of both Governments to continue their consultation to finalise the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) of the two initiatives. Recognising the keen interest of residents in Malaysia and Singapore, and to facilitate smooth cross-border flows, the Governments of Malaysia and Singapore have agreed to publish the requirements, health protocols, and application process involved for entry and exit into Malaysia and Singapore, 10 days prior to their implementation of the RGL and PCA.

Malaysia and Singapore have also agreed to develop other appropriate schemes for the cross-border movement of people including a daily cross-border commuting proposal for work purposes for travellers from both countries, while taking into account the required health protocols and available medical resources in both countries to ensure the safety of the citizens of both sides. This will allow both sides to progressively restore cross-border people-to-people interaction and economic exchanges.

Fact Check : AirAsia Banned Wheeled Cabin Luggage?

People are outraged that AirAsia has apparently banned wheeled cabin luggage to facilitate social distancing during embarkation and disembarkation.

Claim : AirAsia Temporarily Bans Wheeled Cabin Luggage!

Quite a few websites are sharing what they claimed are a new AirAsia cabin baggage policy, which temporarily bans wheeled luggage to ensure social distancing during embarkation and disembarkation.

All guests (except infants) are allowed to carry on board ONLY 1 piece of cabin baggage which can be either:

One (1) Laptop bag or one (1) handbag or one (1) small bag:

  • MUST NOT exceed the dimensions of 40cm (H) X 30cm (W) X 10cm (L).
  • MUST FIT under the seat in front of you.
  • MUST NOT weigh more than 7kg.

If your cabin baggage cannot fit under the seat in front of you:

  • You will be given a complimentary check in for the cabin bag that weighs less than 7kg. Please check-in your baggage at the counter.
  • If the bag weighs more than 7kg, extra airport charges apply for each kg of weight.
  • The 7kg complimentary check-in baggage should be treated separately from the standard check-in baggage.

People also shared the news on social media. Here is one example :

This new policy sure is shocking because it would mean that AirAsia travellers will have to cough up for checked luggage, or worse – end up paying A LOT MORE at the airport.

But wait… is this even true? Let’s find out…

 

AirAsia Banned Wheeled Cabin Luggage : Yes, But No Longer…

This temporary AirAsia cabin luggage policy which got everyone riled up is true, but is no longer in effect… starting tomorrow! Here are the facts…

Fact #1 : AirAsia Did Temporarily Ban Wheeled Cabin Luggage

First of all, we have to point out that this isn’t exactly fake news. It is just OLD NEWS.

The restricted cabin luggage policy was part of preventive measures against COVID-19, when AirAsia was permitted to restart domestic flights in:

  • Malaysia (29 April 2020),
  • Thailand (1 May 2020),
  • the Philippines (1 June 2020),
  • India (4 May 2020), and
  • Indonesia (7 May 2020).

Here is the relevant section on their FAQ on precautionary measures while flying with AirAsia during the COVID-19 pandemic, which was posted on 29 April 2020 :

7. What are my cabin baggage limits?

To facilitate social distancing and minimise physical contact when boarding and disembarkation, only ONE piece of cabin baggage is allowed for each guest. More details are available here. All other baggage aside from handbags or laptop bags will need to be checked-in. Please proceed to the check-in counter if you have any enquiry.

Fact #2 : That Restricted Cabin Luggage Policy Ends 6 July 2020

AirAsia actually updated the cabin luggage policy page today, to state that the old policy will be reinstated effective 7 July 2020.

In other words, the restricted cabin luggage policy they introduced on 29 April 2020, ends today.

You are allowed to bring onboard two (2) pieces of bag as part of your cabin baggage allowance with the total weight of both items not exceeding 7kg.

One (1) piece of cabin bag must not exceed 56cm x 36cm x 23cm including the handles, wheels and side pockets. This bag must be able to fit in the overhead compartment in the aircraft cabin.

You may also carry one (1) piece of laptop bag, handbag, backpack or any other small bag which must not exceed 40cm x 30cm x 10cm. This item must be able to fit under the seat in front of you.

Fact #3 : Infants < 2 Years Old Never Had Cabin Baggage Allowance

At least one website claimed that infants under the age of 2 no longer have any cabin luggage allowance, under the new policy.

However, that was always the case even before the COVID-19 pandemic. Only children 2 years and older have cabin luggage allowances – 7 kg, the same as adults.

The only exception is on AirAsia India flights – starting 10 July 2020, infants below 2 years of age will be allocated 7 kg of hand baggage.

Fact #4 : Baby Strollers / Buggies / Prams Are Carried FOC

At least one website claimed that baby strollers must meet cabin baggage allowable dimensions, or you must purchase a checked baggage allowance.

That is not true.

Baby strollers / buggies / prams are carried free of charge on AirAsia flights as checked baggage, provided they are being used by a child or infant.

Those who wish to carry their strollers into the cabin must make sure it can be folded to fit the cabin baggage allowances.

AirAsia Domestic Unlimited Pass Extended : Poor Response?

AirAsia just extended their Unlimited Pass Cuti-Cuti Malaysia by another two days, arguably due to poor response.

Anyone who read the rules and understands the limitations will know why it is a joke to call it Cuti-Cuti Malaysia….

 

AirAsia Domestic Unlimited Pass : What Is It?

Now that Malaysia is under Recovery MCO, AirAsia announced the Unlimited Pass Cuti-Cuti Malaysia promotion to spur domestic tourism.

This is the domestic version of their earlier international Unlimited Pass, which we pointed out was a waste of money for most people.

It promises to let you book unlimited flights to sixteen local destinations within Malaysia for a year, for just RM 399 per person.

AirAsia BIG Members can purchase this special pass from 11 June to 13 June 2020. This has been extended to 15 June 2020.

After purchasing it, they will be able to redeem flights from 25 June 2020 until 31 March 2021.

 

AirAsia Domestic Unlimited Pass : TLDR Advice

It looks like the AirAsia Unlimited Pass Cuti-Cuti Malaysia isn’t doing well at all…

AirAsia tried to spin that 12,000 flight tickets were booked, mostly to Kuching and Kota Kinabalu. That’s actually pretty poor response, since they flew over 13 MILLION passengers in Q4 2019 alone…

In addition, people usually book two ways and use these Unlimited Passes to book multiple trips. So arguably, they only sold 6,000 or less of these domestic Unlimited Passes.

 

AirAsia Domestic Unlimited Pass : TLDR Advice

For those who don’t have the time to read, here is our quick summary of what you need to know :

  1. COVID-19 will prevent / discourage you from using this Unlimited Pass for many months.
  2. You are NOT guaranteed tickets, because there are limited promo seats on each flight.
  3. It will not apply during embargo periods – weekends, public holidays and school holidays.
  4. Families should NOT bother. Holidays should be fun, not torture.
  5. You must be willing to book your ticket, and be seated, separately from anyone you are travelling with.
  6. It is best purchased and used by retirees, or singles / couples who have flexible working arrangements and can travel on working days.
  7. We also recommend it for business travellers – this can really save them a lot of money!

Since it may not be available during weekends, public holidays and school holidays, the Cuti-Cuti Malaysia tagline is really misleading…

 

AirAsia Domestic Unlimited Pass : Who Should Buy It?

Based on the severe restrictions AirAsia places on this pass, the best people to buy it should meet these requirements :

  • retired, single or a couple
  • able to travel on normal working days / need to travel for work
  • willing to put up with booking / travel hassles

Everyone else should not bother. Really. Travel should be fun, not torture.

We however recommend it for BUSINESS TRAVELLERS. The 14-day advanced booking may be a problem, but if you need to travel a lot for work, this pass will save you a lot of money!

AirAsia Domestic Unlimited Pass : Not For Holidays!

Reason #1 : Remember COVID-19?

Even though Malaysia did very well in the fight against COVID-19, the pandemic isn’t over. In fact, COVID-19 is likely to persist and spread back and forth from various countries for many more months to come.

Until a vaccine is approved and administered worldwide, it is possible that Malaysia may encounter additional waves of COVID-19 infections.

If you are unwilling to take this risk, you may end up not flying all that much, if at all!

Reason #2 : You’re NOT Guaranteed A Flight

The pass does NOT guarantee you to any flight. You can only use it to redeem flights that AirAsia has earmarked with 100% OFF signs.

You can select flights without the 100% OFF sign, but you will have to pay full price for them.

Reason #3 : Severe Limitations On Tickets

It’s stated in their Q&A (conveniently located in a separate Q&A page) that :

  • tickets are limited, and may not be available for all flights during public holidays, school breaks and weekends.
  • you can only buy it for direct flights, no connecting flights allowed.
  • every passenger must book the flight individually – you cannot book as a group, even if everyone has the Unlimited Pass.
  • you must be 12 years or older, and have your own BIG Member account.
  • you must book your tickets at least 14 days in advanced.

These limitations are designed to reduce your ability to fly as often as you would like using the Pass. Families, for example, must be willing to be seated separately.

Unless you are single or a couple, and able to travel during work days, you may not even have the opportunity to use the AirAsia Unlimited Pass Cuti-Cuti Malaysia at all!

Reason #4 : Forced To Pay Full Price

Flying as a group will be problematic, because there are limited seats available for this Pass.

What will likely happen is that a few members of your group will be able to use their Pass, while the others will have to pay full price for their tickets.

The way out would be to split the group up, and fly on separate flights. But obviously, this makes travel much more of a hassle.

And remember – even if you get to fly out with the Unlimited Pass Cuti-Cuti Malaysia, you may not get to do so on the way back.

You may have to pay full price, unless you are able and willing to adjust your return date according to what’s available for the Unlimited Pass.

Reason #5 : Fuel, Baggage + Other Fees

Even if you manage to book many flights using the Unlimited Pass, they aren’t free. You will still need to cough up extra money for ancillary fees.

Budget airlines like AirAsia make a large percentage of their profits not from flight tickets, but from ancillary revenue – administrative fees, baggage fees, assigned seat fees, flight insurance, cancellations, documentation, meals, merchandise, fuel surcharges, etc.

In Q3 2019, almost a quarter of AirAsia’s revenue came from such ancillary sources – a whopping RM 686 million. And unlike revenue from flight tickets – they have relatively low costs – and so they contribute substantially to the airline’s PROFITS.

Frequent AirAsia travellers will tell you that these ancillary fees often cost as much as, or even more, than the flight tickets!

 

AirAsia Domestic Unlimited Pass : The Caveats

AirAsia conveniently lists the caveats of the Unlimited Pass in two sections in a separate Q&A page, which we have combined and summarised here (with our emphasis) :

  • It is only applicable on direct flights with the AK carrier code.
  • Flight redemption is limited and may not be available for all flights during public holidays, school breaks and weekends.
  • Flight redemption is only valid for base fare only and do not include optional add-ons, passenger service charge, regularity service charge, or other charges.
  • Booking must be made at least fourteen (14) days before the flight departure date.
  • All applicable taxes, fees or charges imposed by the regulatory bodies must be paid at the time of purchase unless otherwise stated.
  • It is available for BIG Members within Malaysia who are at least 12 years of age on the date of departure and the passenger must be the BIG Member who made the booking. Each AirAsia Unlimited Pass is assigned to one (1) passenger only with one (1) BIG Member account.
  • You can only book for yourself, and cannot select multiple passengers using the AirAsia Unlimited Pass.
  • In the event any travel agency or party other than an individual BIG Member purchased the AirAsia Unlimited Pass and subsequently made flight bookings using the AirAsia Unlimited Pass, AirAsia shall have the right to cancel/forfeit such AirAsia Unlimited Pass and the flight bookings, without any liability on the part of AirAsia to such agency, third party or any passenger.

Fact Check: Changi Airport Passengers Must Wear PPE Suits?

Are Changi Airport passengers required to wear PPE suits before they board their flights? A video seems to show that.

Changi Airport Passengers Must Wear PPE Suits : The Facts!

Fact #1 : The Video Is Genuine

First of all, the video is genuine and was recorded on 31 May 2020.

It showed real passengers in blue PPE suits waiting for their flight in Terminal 3 of Changi Airport in Singapore.

Fact #2 : They Are Vietnamese Citizens

In the video, you can hear them speaking Vietnamese. They are actually part of 340 Vietnamese citizens being repatriated from Singapore after COVID-19 infections there approached 35,000.

They include the elderly, pregnant women, those with pre-existing health conditions, the young (under 18 years of age), or tourists whose visas had expired – all of whom paid their own fares for the flight.

Fact #3 : PPE Requirement Was By Vietnam Government + Vietnam Airlines

Those being repatriated were required to don those blue PPE suits, as well as face masks and gloves, by the Vietnamese Ministry of Health, and Vietnam Airlines.

This was a requirement since 15 May 2020, after two Vietnam Airlines flight attendants tested positive for COVID-19 after a repatriation flight from Russia.

They actually had to wear all that for the entire duration of the flight, and were quarantined upon arriving at Can Tho, a southern Vietnamese city.

Fact #4 : PPE Requirement Not Exclusive To Singapore

This requirement to wear blue PPE suits, face masks and gloves was not exclusive to Singapore or Changi Airport.

It was mandated for all Vietnamese citizens being repatriated from COVID-19 hotspots by Vietnam Airlines.

According to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both the Vietnam Airlines cabin crew and flight crew had to don the same blue PPE suits, face masks and gloves for the entire flight as well.

Fact #5 : Singapore Does Not Require PPE Suits In Changi Airport

Changi Airport in Singapore does not require passengers to wear PPE suits. They only require everyone to wear a face mask.

Here are Changi Airport’s official measures against COVID-19 :

  • All arriving, transit and departing passengers at Changi Airport are subject to temperature screening. Passengers who are febrile or display respiratory symptoms will be referred to a doctor on duty.
  • All airport staff entering the transit area will have to undergo temperature screening. Staff who have a high temperature will be asked to consult a doctor immediately.
  • All passengers, air crew and airport staff must wear a mask at all times at Changi Airport. In addition, all passengers and crew members must also wear a mask for the entire duration of their flight to and from Changi Airport.Passengers who need to purchase a mask may do so at the airport pharmacies and convenience stores such as Guardian, Watson’s and 7-11.
  • Changi Airport conducts frequent cleaning and disinfecting across its terminals and at Jewel Changi Airport.High-contact areas across the airport such as door handles, water coolers, counter tops, baggage trolleys and lift buttons are cleaned and disinfected more frequently.Frequent swab tests are conducted at these areas to ensure the efficacy of cleaning and disinfection.
  • For an added layer of protection, frequently-touched surfaces such as automated check-in kiosks, trolleys, lift buttons and security trays are coated with a protective antimicrobial coating to reduce the risk of virus transmission.
  • Autonomous cleaning equipment are deployed throughout the airport cleaning and disinfecting the floors and carpets at Changi Airport daily.
  • Prayer rooms, baby care rooms and smoking areas are available for use. Passengers must observe safe distancing and adhere to the markers.Frequent cleaning and disinfecting is done at these areas and frequently-touched surfaces are sprayed with a protective antimicrobial coating to reduce the risk of virus transmission.
  • There are more than 1,200 hand sanitisers available across all terminals and Jewel Changi Airport, from check-in rows to gate holdrooms. Hand sanitisers will only be allowed in cabin baggage if kept in containers of not more than 100ml each.

AirAsia Unlimited Pass Cuti-Cuti Malaysia : Not So Fast!

The AirAsia Unlimited Pass Cuti-Cuti Malaysia promises UNLIMITED AIR TRAVEL to local sixteen destinations, for a whole year!

But as usual – there are caveats with this offer that makes it a joke to call it Cuti-Cuti Malaysia….

 

AirAsia Unlimited Pass Cuti-Cuti Malaysia : What Is It?

Now that Malaysia is under Recovery MCO, AirAsia announced the Unlimited Pass Cuti-Cuti Malaysia promotion to spur domestic tourism.

This is the domestic version of their earlier international Unlimited Pass, which we pointed out was a waste of money for most people.

It promises to let you book unlimited flights to sixteen local destinations within Malaysia for a year, for just RM 399 per person.

AirAsia BIG Members can purchase this special pass from 11 June to 13 June 2020.

After purchasing it, they will be able to redeem flights from 25 June 2020 until 31 March 2021.

 

AirAsia Unlimited Pass Cuti-Cuti Malaysia : TLDR Advice

For those who don’t have the time to read, here is our quick summary of what you need to know :

  1. COVID-19 will prevent / discourage you from using this Unlimited Pass for many months.
  2. You are NOT guaranteed tickets, because there are limited promo seats on each flight.
  3. It will not apply during embargo periods – weekends, public holidays and school holidays.
  4. Families should NOT bother. Holidays should be fun, not torture.
  5. You must be willing to book your ticket, and be seated, separately from anyone you are travelling with.
  6. It is best purchased and used by retirees, or singles / couples who have flexible working arrangements and can travel on working days.
  7. We also recommend it for business travellers – this can really save them a lot of money!

Since it may not be available during weekends, public holidays and school holidays, the Cuti-Cuti Malaysia tagline is really misleading…

 

AirAsia Unlimited Pass Cuti-Cuti Malaysia : Who Should Buy It?

Based on the severe restrictions AirAsia places on this pass, the best people to buy it should meet these requirements :

  • retired, single or a couple
  • able to travel on normal working days / need to travel for work
  • willing to put up with booking / travel hassles

Everyone else should not bother. Really. Travel should be fun, not torture.

We however recommend it for BUSINESS TRAVELLERS. The 14-day advanced booking may be a problem, but if you need to travel a lot for work, this pass will save you a lot of money!

AirAsia Unlimited Pass Cuti-Cuti Malaysia : Not For Holidays!

Reason #1 : Remember COVID-19?

Even though Malaysia did very well in the fight against COVID-19, the pandemic isn’t over. In fact, COVID-19 is likely to persist and spread back and forth from various countries for many more months to come.

Until a vaccine is approved and administered worldwide, it is possible that Malaysia may encounter additional waves of COVID-19 infections.

If you are unwilling to take this risk, you may end up not flying all that much, if at all!

Reason #2 : You’re NOT Guaranteed A Flight

The pass does NOT guarantee you to any flight. You can only use it to redeem flights that AirAsia has earmarked with 100% OFF signs.

You can select flights without the 100% OFF sign, but you will have to pay full price for them.

Reason #3 : Severe Limitations On Tickets

It’s stated in their Q&A (conveniently located in a separate Q&A page) that :

  • tickets are limited, and may not be available for all flights during public holidays, school breaks and weekends.
  • you can only buy it for direct flights, no connecting flights allowed.
  • every passenger must book the flight individually – you cannot book as a group, even if everyone has the Unlimited Pass.
  • you must be 12 years or older, and have your own BIG Member account.
  • you must book your tickets at least 14 days in advanced.

These limitations are designed to reduce your ability to fly as often as you would like using the Pass. Families, for example, must be willing to be seated separately.

Unless you are single or a couple, and able to travel during work days, you may not even have the opportunity to use the AirAsia Unlimited Pass Cuti-Cuti Malaysia at all!

Reason #4 : Forced To Pay Full Price

Flying as a group will be problematic, because there are limited seats available for this Pass.

What will likely happen is that a few members of your group will be able to use their Pass, while the others will have to pay full price for their tickets.

The way out would be to split the group up, and fly on separate flights. But obviously, this makes travel much more of a hassle.

And remember – even if you get to fly out with the Unlimited Pass Cuti-Cuti Malaysia, you may not get to do so on the way back.

You may have to pay full price, unless you are able and willing to adjust your return date according to what’s available for the Unlimited Pass.

Reason #5 : Fuel, Baggage + Other Fees

Even if you manage to book many flights using the Unlimited Pass, they aren’t free. You will still need to cough up extra money for ancillary fees.

Budget airlines like AirAsia make a large percentage of their profits not from flight tickets, but from ancillary revenue – administrative fees, baggage fees, assigned seat fees, flight insurance, cancellations, documentation, meals, merchandise, fuel surcharges, etc.

In Q3 2019, almost a quarter of AirAsia’s revenue came from such ancillary sources – a whopping RM 686 million. And unlike revenue from flight tickets – they have relatively low costs – and so they contribute substantially to the airline’s PROFITS.

Frequent AirAsia travellers will tell you that these ancillary fees often cost as much as, or even more, than the flight tickets!

 

AirAsia Unlimited Pass Cuti-Cuti Malaysia : The Caveats

AirAsia conveniently lists the caveats of the Unlimited Pass in two sections in a separate Q&A page, which we have combined and summarised here (with our emphasis) :

  • It is only applicable on direct flights with the AK carrier code.
  • Flight redemption is limited and may not be available for all flights during public holidays, school breaks and weekends.
  • Flight redemption is only valid for base fare only and do not include optional add-ons, passenger service charge, regularity service charge, or other charges.
  • Booking must be made at least fourteen (14) days before the flight departure date.
  • All applicable taxes, fees or charges imposed by the regulatory bodies must be paid at the time of purchase unless otherwise stated.
  • It is available for BIG Members within Malaysia who are at least 12 years of age on the date of departure and the passenger must be the BIG Member who made the booking. Each AirAsia Unlimited Pass is assigned to one (1) passenger only with one (1) BIG Member account.
  • You can only book for yourself, and cannot select multiple passengers using the AirAsia Unlimited Pass.
  • In the event any travel agency or party other than an individual BIG Member purchased the AirAsia Unlimited Pass and subsequently made flight bookings using the AirAsia Unlimited Pass, AirAsia shall have the right to cancel/forfeit such AirAsia Unlimited Pass and the flight bookings, without any liability on the part of AirAsia to such agency, third party or any passenger.
  • AirAsia reserves the right to cancel or forfeit your Unlimited Pass, if you miss more than three (3) flights.
  • The AirAsia Unlimited Pass cannot be sold, bartered, assigned or transferred to another person. Due to the persisting COVID-19 pandemic, AirAsia just announced that their Unlimited Pass will be extended to June 2021. Here are the details!

 

AirAsia Unlimited Pass : What Is It?

Stung by the Airbus bribery scandal and the COVID-19 coronavirus crisis, the AirAsia Unlimited Pass promotion is their effort to stem the bleed.

Earlier this year, AirAsia offered the Unlimited Pass which would give you the right to obtain free flight tickets to seven sectors, as many times as you wish – for a year :

  • Australia
  • Japan
  • Korea
  • China
  • Taiwan (only Taipei)
  • India
  • United States (only Honolulu)

AirAsia Unlimited Pass : Extended To June 2021

The AirAsia Unlimited Pass was on sale until 7 March 2020, which meant the latest anyone could fly was up to the first week of March, 2021.

But with the COVID-19 pandemic locking down most of the world for the next few months, those who purchased the Unlimited Pass have been grumbling.

At this point, we have to say – we told you so…

However, your dissatisfaction has paid off. AirAsia just extended the Unlimited Pass flight availability till 30 June 2020 – an extension of about 3 months for most people.

Do note that this is not an extension of the sale period. That ended on 7 March 2020. The extension is for flight purchases for existing AirAsia Unlimited Pass holders.

If you have already purchased the AirAsia Unlimited Pass, here is a step-by-step guide on how to plan your travel and book your tickets using the AirAsia Unlimited Pass!

 

AirAsia Unlimited Pass Guide : Planning Your Travel!

As we pointed out earlier, the AirAsia Unlimited Pass is not for everyone. But if you are able to benefit from it, here is our guide on how to plan your travel and book your tickets.

Step 1 : Log into your BIG Member account.

Step 2 : Make sure your BIG Member profile name is exactly the same as the name in your passport.

Step 3 : If necessary, please change your profile name to match your passport.

You only have one (1) chance to change your name and you cannot change it once your first flight redemption is confirmed, so make sure you do it before redeeming your first flight!

Step 4 : Go to Deals and look at the My Purchases tab for your AirAsia Unlimited Pass.

If you cannot locate your Unlimited Pass after purchasing, check back after a few hours. If the problem persists, email AirAsia at support_deals@airasia.com.

Step 5 : Generate your Unique Code.

Step 6 : Click Apply Now, and the page will refresh to show a flight search page.

Step 7 : Select your destination and travel date.

The AirAsia Unlimited Pass allows you to redeem these flights :

  • From Kuala Lumpur (return) : Melbourne, Gold Coast, Perth, Sydney, Changsha, Chongqing, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Xi’an, Amritsar, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Sapporo (Chin Chitose), Osaka, Fukuoka, Tokyo (Haneda), Tokyo (Narita), Jeju, Seoul, Busan, Taipei

  • From Bangkok (return) : Brisbane, Shanghai, Sapporo (Chin Chitose), Osaka, Tokyo (Narita), Nogoya, Fukuoka, Seoul

  • Others (return) : Taipei – Osaka, Taipei – Okinawa, Osaka – Honolulu

Flights with seats listed as 100% OFF are available to be booked by AirAsia Unlimited Pass holders.

If your selected flight has no 100% OFF sign, that means the AirAsia Unlimited Pass is NOT available for the selected date, or the selected date falls on the Embargo Period.

Step 8 : Insert your Unique Code into the “Promo Code” field.

You will see the airport taxes and fees payable for that sector, with the total payable taxes and fees at the black box at the bottom for the return trip.

Step 9 : Add your baggage, meals and seat allocations!

Step 10 : Complete your booking by paying the necessary taxes, fees and add-on fees.

 

AirAsia Unlimited Pass Guide : Warning!

AirAsia would like us to remind everyone that your Unlimited Pass cannot be returned, refunded or transferred.

They will also void your Unlimited Pass if you are no-show for 3 consecutive times for your confirmed flights.

So make sure you REALLY want to fly to those destinations on those dates before booking!
