AMD B450 Chipset Explained with Official AMD Tech Briefing!

We had earlier shared with you our previews of the GIGABYTE B450 AORUS  PRO WIFI motherboard, as well as the MSI B450 Tomahawk and B450A-Pro motherboards. The AMD B450 chipset powering those motherboards is officially launched today, so yes, you can purchase these motherboards starting today!

In this article, we will share with you the official AMD B450 tech briefing video, as well as the full details and slides on the AMD B450 chipset. Don’t forget to share this with your friends!

The Official AMD B450 Tech Briefing

Let’s start with the official AMD B450 tech briefing, conducted by Don Woligroski, AMD Business Development and Desktop Processor Marketing.

The AMD B450 Chipset Explained!

Needless to say, the AMD B450 chipset uses Socket AM4. That means it will support every AM4 processor from their 7th Gen APUs all the way to the highest-end 2nd Gen Ryzen processors.

Key message : Future AMD desktop processors will use Socket AM4 until 2020, so they will run on your AMD B450 motherboard with a BIOS update.

Because the new AMD B450 chipset can be used with all AMD Ryzen and 2nd Gen Ryzen processors, it can be used in everything from a compact HTPC, all the way to an enthusiast-class gaming PC.

Key message : You can build an AMD gaming PC with a B450 motherboard for as low as US$350 / €300 / RM 1,400!

This table shows you all of the AMD AM4 processor families that are fully compatible with the new AMD B450 chipset. They have “suggested chipsets” for each family, but every AM4 processor will work with the new B450 chipset as well as older AM4 chipsets.

Key message : You will be able to upgrade to multiple generations of processors with a B450 motherboard.

This comparison shows you how much performance headroom you have with the B450 chipset. You can start with a low-cost AMD Ryzen 3 2200G APU and eventually upgrade to an AMD Ryzen 7 2700X, using the same motherboard.

Key message : Upgrading your AMD processor does not require you to buy a new motherboard!

For a mid-range chipset, the AMD B450 has a number of impressive features. It allows for better memory overclocking and the AMD StoreMI Technology.

Key message : The AMD B450 chipset offers better memory overclocking and a free AMD StoreMI license.

This slide just shows how AMD B450 chipset communicates with the AMD Ryzen processor through four PCI Express 3.0 lanes.

Key message : The AMD B450 chipset offers 24 PCIe Gen 3 lanes with all AMD Ryzen and 2nd Gen Ryzen processors.

This slide reinforces AMD’s messaging that they will continue to use Socket AM4 until 2020.

Key message : The AMD B450 chipset should be able to support another 3 generations of AMD processors, with the necessary BIOS updates.

The AMD B450 Chipset Explained Part 2

Compared to the X470 chipset, the only thing you are really giving up is CPU PCIe Bifurcation. This is only necessary if you plan to use a M.2 or PCI Express expansion card, like the ASUS Hyper M.2 X16 card we showcased recently… or get maximum performance from two graphics cards.

Key message : The AMD B450 chipset is great value!

This slide shows how AMD offers unlocked processor overclocking, while Intel does not.

Key message : If you want to overclock, get AMD!

This slide shows just how much more affordable the AMD B450 platform is, when paired with the AMD Ryzen 5 2400G APU. If you top up your budget to the same price point, you get the Ryzen 5 2600 CPU, which can process twice the number of threads simultaneously!

Key message : AMD offers better value for comparable performance.

The AMD B450 chipset comes with AMD StoreMI, which combines your solid state drive and hard disk drive with a RAM cache, to create an incredibly fast storage solution.

Key message : AMD B450 motherboards offer a big boost to storage performance.

StoreMI works by intelligently rearranging your files so that the most-frequently used blocks are store on the fastest drive. Best of all – it’s FREE with B450 motherboards!

Key message : AMD B450 motherboards offer a FREE boost in storage performance.

This is not quite a fair comparison, since Optane Memory is a dedicated solid state cache, while StoreMI uses your own SSD. It’s not like AMD is providing you with a fast cache with the B450 motherboards.

Key message : StoreMI gives you a free boost in storage performance… if you have your own SSD.

This slide summarises the price-performance advantage of the AMD B450 platform.

Key message : AMD B450 offers incredible price-performance over competing Intel platforms.

The Threadripper Game Mode

Games are mostly optimised for quad-core processors… and rarely make use of octa-core processors. In fact, having even more cores can result in poorer performance due to poor thread scheduling. In some cases, the game may not even run at all.

To avoid those problems, AMD developer the Threadripper Game Mode. You can switch from the default “Creator Mode” to the “Game Mode” in the AMD Ryzen Master utility. Switching to Game Mode changes the Threadripper processor in two ways :

[adrotate group=”2″]
  • It temporarily disables half the CPU cores, turning the Threadripper 1950X (Lowest Price) into an 8C 16T processor like the AMD Ryzen 1800X, and the Threadripper 1920X (Lowest Price) into an 6C 12T processor like the AMD Ryzen 1600X.
  • It tells the operating system to use a Local Mode (NUMA) memory, which keeps the game and its memory footprint inside one CPU die and the locally-connected DRAM memory. This minimises several key latency points in the system, which will improve gaming performance.

Once you are done playing your game, you can switch back to Creator Mode to make full use of all of the Threadripper’s cores.

Let’s take a look at the performance difference between the Creator Mode and the Game Mode.

As you can see, the Game Mode improves the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X’s gaming performance by 10% to 38%. It’s likely that disabling half the cores also allow the Threadripper to clock them higher, as there is now a much higher thermal headroom.

The ZTE Blade V8 Price, Specifications & Preview

The new ZTE Blade V8 (Amazon | Lazada) smartphone was officially launched today. Designed with the youth market in mind, the Blade V8 comes with a dual-lens camera that not only produces better bokeh, it is also capable of taking 3D photos and videos. Let’s check it out in greater detail!

The ZTE Blade V8 Smartphone

The ZTE Blade V8 (Amazon | Lazada) is a 5.2″ smartphone that runs on the latest Android 7.0 Nougat, and is powered by the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 435. It comes with 3 GB of memory and 32 GB of internal flash storage. If that’s not enough, you can add storage using a microSD card (up to 128 GB).

The ZTE Blade V8’s killer feature is the main camera, which is 3D capable, thanks to the second 2 MP camera placed away from the main 13 MP camera. This gives the camera enough stereoscopic capability to produce 3D pictures and videos. It can also improve the bokeh in normal 2D photos, and adds a refocus mode, which allows you to change the focus in the picture after you have taken it.

Its front camera is no slouch either. It boasts the same 13 MP Sony IMX258 sensor used by the main camera, paired with a f/2.2 lens, and supported by a Moonlight flash. What is a Moonlight flash? It’s actually a dedicated LED flash, with a softer glow to avoid harsh highlights when you take selfies.

Joe Macri : The Disruptive Nature of AMD Ryzen

Last week, AMD Corporate Vice President, Product Chief Technology Officer and Corporate Fellow, Joe Macri, flew in to brief us on the disruptive nature of the new AMD Ryzen processors. Join us for his full tech briefing!

If you are wondering why Adam Kozak, Radeon Product Marketing Manager (far left), is here as well, check out his presentation on the AMD Radeon RX 500 Series graphics cards! 😀

The Disruptive Nature of Ryzen

Joe Macri’s presentation is actually titled “The New Era“, but we think it more accurately describes the disruptive nature of the new Ryzen processors. Not only has the Ryzen proven to be a real winner, it has also fired up interest in desktop computing that has never been seen in many years hence.

Here are the key takeaway points :

  • Moore’s law has slowed down, so the industry is evolving to “Moore’s Law+” with new process technology, microarchitecture, integration technology and software.
  • Despite the increase in computing power, we are still far from achieving 1000 TFLOPS required to achieve full presence capability.
  • The AMD Zen core delivers an increase in IPC (instructions per clock) of more than 52% over the previous microarchitecture.[adrotate banner=”4″]
  • The AMD Zen core also delivers 10% better area efficiency than the 7th Generation Intel Core processor (codenamed Kaby Lake).
  • The AMD Zen core delivers 270% better Cinebench multi-core performance / watt over its predecessor.
  • AMD has design teams working on the Zen 2 and Zen 3 cores, just as they have teams working on the Navi GPU that will come after this year’s Vega GPU.
  • AMD is focused on open solutions for heterogenous computing, like the HSA Foundation, Radeon Open Compute (ROCm) and the open interconnect standards.
