It’s official – the EU has ordered all brands to standardise on the USB-C connector for all mobile chargers, including Apple!

EU Orders All Brands To Use USB-C, Including Apple!

On Tuesday, October 4, 2022, the European Parliament voted decisively in favour of adopting the USB-C (USB Type C) port as the new standard for all portable devices.

The directive passed with an overwhelming vote of 602 MEPs in favour, and just 13 against (with 8 abstentions), and now heads to the EU Council for the formality of a final approval.

Once the Council signs off on the directive, it will enter into force 20 days after publication in the EU’s Official Journal. Member states will then have 12 months to transpose the new directive, and another 12 months after that transposition period, to apply the new rules.

Once these new rules are enforced, consumers will be able to use and share chargers since all portable devices use the same charging port.

The EU expects the directive to greatly reduce e-waste, and help consumers save up to €250 million a year on purchasing chargers of different standards.

In the EU, chargers alone account for about 11,000 tonnes of e-waste every year. So this directive will help to cut down on the environmental impact of disposing of so many old or unused chargers.

Details Of EU Directive On USB-C Standardisation

Here is my quick round-up of the new EU directive on standardising portable devices and laptops on the USB Type C charging port.

All Devices Must Come With USB-C Charging Port

What this means is that by the end of 2024, all portable devices sold in the EU must come with a USB Type C charging port.

Regardless of their manufacturer, all new mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones and headsets, handheld videogame consoles and portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems, earbuds and laptops that are rechargeable via a wired cable, operating with a power delivery of up to 100 Watts, will have to be equipped with a USB Type-C port.

Small devices like smartwatches and health trackers that cannot fit a USB-C port are exempted from this requirement.

This directive is more or less directed at Apple which persists in using its own proprietary Lighting connector for its devices – everything from iPhone, iPad, AirPods and even its wireless keyboard and mouse.

The only way for Apple to get around this is to switch their new devices to wireless charging before the end of 2024.

All Devices Must Support USB-C Fast Charging Standards

Also important is the fact that the EU is going to force all brands to adopt USB-C fast charging standards.

While the legislation won’t stop manufacturers from implementing special fast charging capabilities, it will ensure that their chargers and devices support USB-C fast charging standards as a minimum.

All devices that support fast charging will now have the same charging speed, allowing users to charge their devices at the same speed with any compatible charger.

USB-C Mandate To Extend To Laptops In 2026

On top of that, the directive also requires laptops to standardise on the USB Type C charging port by spring 2026.

This new directive will not please Apple MacBook users who just celebrated the return of the MagSafe connector, but it will be a great advantage for consumers.

Once enforced, everyone will be able to use their laptop’s USB-C charger to also recharge their other devices, because they all have the same USB Type port!

Dedicated Labels

The directive also requires brands to use dedicated labels to help consumers decide if their existing chargers will support their new devices, or if they need to purchase a new charger.

This will hopefully prevent consumers from being hoodwinked into purchasing a new charger with every new device, when their existing chargers will work just as well.

Dedicated labels will inform consumers about the charging characteristics of new devices, making it easier for them to see whether their existing chargers are compatible.

Buyers will also be able to make an informed choice about whether or not to purchase a new charging device with a new product.

Wireless Charging To Be Standardised Too

The directive also commanded the European Commission to tackle wireless charging interoperability by the end of 2024.

It highlighted the risk of brands using proprietary wireless charging technologies to “lock in” users, replicating what Apple did with its Lightning connector for wired charging.

Like with wired charging, the EU wants wireless charging to be interoperable as well.

Can HUAWEI Phones Get Free Calls + Internet From BeiDou?

Can HUAWEI smartphones get FREE calls and Internet connectivity through BeiDou satellites, without a SIM card?

Take a look at the viral claims, and find out what the FACTS really are!

Claim : BeiDou Gives HUAWEI Phones FREE Calls + Internet!

People have been sharing different messages on WhatsApp and Facebook, claiming that BeiDou will give every HUAWEI phone unlimited calls and Internet without a SIM card!

If u r able to change/ upgrade ur hp then u may want to consider Huawei devices.

Please buy Huawei hp because after the End of June 2020. All Huawei hp will be equipped with Huawei Own Satellite BEIDOU Chipset which will allow you to make Phone Calls and Internet DATA usages without any Charges for Life and No Sim Card is required. Save a lot of money in the long run??

Baidu is do much more powerful than old uncle Google. Baidu is the major driver for 5G, free satellite calls, wider coverage, higher speed, etc. Anyway no one can stop u fr using uncle Google if u so loved him using any type of hp (iOS, Android, Symbian of others)!! U can also VPN to tunnel into many networks & firewalls….!!

No, HUAWEI Phones Cannot Get FREE Calls + Internet From BeiDou!

HUAWEI offers some of the best smartphones in the market, but these claims are truly “out of this world”.

There is NO WAY that any smartphone, from HUAWEI or any other brand, that can make free calls or receive free Internet connectivity through BeiDou satellites.

These are just fake news created by the Chinese 50 Cent Army / Little Pink Army.

Fact #1 : BeiDou Is A Navigation Satellite System

BeiDou is China’s own satellite positioning and navigational system, functionally similar to GPS, GLONASS and Galileo.

So far, the Chinese have launched 59 satellites, from three generations.

Fact #2 : Final BeiDou-3 Satellite Launched In June 2020

The June 2020 date likely refers to the launch of the final BeiDou-3 satellite, which completes the BeiDou-3 satellite constellation.

The original BeiDou-1 satellites were decommissioned at the end of 2012.

Fact #3 : Smartphones Have Supported BeiDou For Years

The first smartphones to support BeiDou were introduced in 2013. It’s not like BeiDou is only being introduced after June 2020.

Fact #4 : HUAWEI Supports Multiple Satellite Systems

HUAWEI, like many other brands, have long introduced multi-constellation support for navigational signals.

Their smartphones not only support GPS, but also BeiDou, GLONASS, and Galileo, switching to whichever satellite system offers the best performance or accuracy.

Fact #5 : BeiDou Is Supported By Foreign Mobile Platforms

BeiDou civilian signals can be used by foreign mobile platforms, and are in fact supported by Samsung Exynos and MediaTek mobile platforms.

Qualcomm, for example, introduced support for BeiDou signals in their Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974) platform back in 2013. So did MediaTek with their MT3332 / MT3333 SoCs.

So many non-HUAWEI smartphones use chipsets that support BeiDou.

Fact #6 : BeiDou Cannot Provide Calls / Internet Connectivity

BeiDou is primarily a global positioning satellite system, with limited communications capability – just short messaging services (SMS).

However, only the military (or related security services like civil defence) are given access to the BeiDou SMS service, using special satellite phones.

Civilian devices, like HUAWEI smartphones, can only use its positioning services, and have NO ACCESS to any communications capability.

A CGTN news report is probably responsible for this misunderstanding (watch our video above).

Fact #7 : Calls + Internet Still Require A SIM Card / eSIM

While the HUAWEI P40 series smartphones support eSIM, other HUAWEI smartphones still require a physical SIM card.

But whether your smartphone uses a physical SIM card or eSIM, it needs some sort of SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) number to obtain call and Internet services from your mobile service provider.

Fact #8 : HUAWEI Offers A Free Video Call Service

HUAWEI introduced a new video call feature called MeeTime, which allows all HUAWEI devices to make video calls for free.

This includes tablets like the HUAWEI MatePad Pro, and computers like the HUAWEI MateBook X Pro.

However, MeeTime requires Internet connectivity, and no, HUAWEI is not giving you free Internet connectivity to use MeeTime.

Seriously, no one can give you free Internet connectivity. Not even Apple.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus : Key Features

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus is designed for those who want the ultra-low latency S Pen, in addition to its bigger and better display.

120 Hz Super AMOLED Display

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus has a 12.4-inch Super AMOLED display, with a resolution of 1752 x 2800 pixels and a pixel density of 266 ppi.

This is a HDR10+ display with an NTSC colour range. It supports a dynamic refresh rate, which automatically adjusts the refresh rate from 11 Hz to 120 Hz.

This helps it deliver silky-smooth graphics when needed, and save power when a higher refresh rate isn’t necessary.

Performance

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ mobile platform – currently the fastest mobile platform money can buy.

It offers a faster 3.09 GHz prime core as well as a 10% faster Adreno 650 GPU over the “regular” Snapdragon 865, and is approximately 10% faster than Samsung’s flagship Exynos 990.

Recommended : Snapdragon 865 Plus vs Exynos 990 Performance Compared!

RAM + Storage

The base model comes with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage, with the 8 GB + 512 GB option in certain countries. Our mid-range model came with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage.

On a clean boot, you have 4.2 GB of free memory – 52.5% of total memory capacity. That’s more than enough memory to run multiple apps at the same time.

For perspective, high-end mobile games like PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9 use less than 1.2 GB of RAM.

Fresh out of the box, you have just under 221 GB of free internal storage – more than enough to store some 63,000 photos!

256 GB of internal storage is definitely more than sufficient for most users. But in case you run out of internal storage, you can add a microSD card for additional storage (up to 1 TB).

Front Camera

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus comes with an 8 MP front camera that is capable of recording up to 1080p video at 30 fps.

It’s hidden in the right bezel, to ensure it is at the top when you mount the Tab S7 Plus onto its optional Book Cover Keyboard.

Recommended : Samsung Book Cover Keyboard For Galaxy Tab S7+ Review!

Rear Cameras

At the back, it has a dual camera system, supported by a single LED flash :

  • a 13 MP main camera, with f/2.0 aperture, and
  • a 5 MP ultra-wide camera, with f/2.2 aperture

It can record videos with up to 4K resolution at 30 fps.

Quad AKG Speakers

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus comes with four AKG speakers – two at the top, and two at the bottom.

These speakers support Dolby Atmos, for a cinematic experience, whether you are gaming or watching movies

Hit The Road, Jack

Like the Galaxy Tab S6, it doesn’t have a 3.5 mm audio jack, which allows it to be less than 6 mm thin.

Samsung does not include a USB-C to 3.5mm adaptor. Instead, their retail box includes a pair of USB Type C earphones (not in our box).

Ultra-Low Latency S Pen

What people may not realise is that only Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus comes with the new ultra-low latency S Pen, with a 9 ms response time.

This is literally the larger version of the ultra-low latency S Pen that ships with the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra smartphone.

The ultra-low response time gives you the same instantaneous feel of putting pen or pencil to paper, which will be especially important for artists.

Book Cover Keyboard

Samsung is bundling the Book Cover Keyboard at least here in Malaysia, but that doesn’t mean it’s part of the bundle in your country.

But it’s a great big bonus if it’s part of the package. The Book Cover Keyboard turns your Galaxy Tab S7 Plus into a virtual laptop, thanks to its integrated keyboard and touchpad.

On top of that, it comes with a magnetically-locked compartment for the S Pen, ensuring that it is properly secured while charging.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus : Battery Life

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus has a massive 10,090 mAh battery, which promises to deliver up to 14 hours of video playback time.

To test its battery life, we turned off Automatic Brightness, and set its display brightness to 50%.

Why 50%? That is actually slightly higher than the average indoor brightness level of 40% during the day, and is what we usually use in all our mobile battery life tests.

It is important to fix the brightness level, to make sure the screen brightness does not change as the room brightness changed.

We then ran the PCMark Work 2.0 battery life test until its battery capacity dropped to 20%, repeating several times.

These are the best results we obtained at the standard 60 Hz refresh rate, and the dynamic refresh rate of up to 120 Hz.

Just under 8 hours. Well, that’s far from the rated 14 hours… even with a 60 Hz refresh rate.

That suggests some serious power burn by the display and/or Snapdragon 865+, because the HUAWEI MatePad Pro hit 14 hours on a much smaller 7250 mAh battery.

It gets worse if you turn on the dynamic refresh rate that automatically adjusts the refresh rate from 11 Hz to 120 Hz – it lasted just over 6 hours!

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus : Recharging Speed

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus supports the phenomenally-fast 45 watt super fast charging. Unfortunately, Samsung only bundles an anaemic 15 watt fast charger in the box…

Take a look at how fast its bundled 15 watt fast charger topped up its massive 10,090 mAh battery…

Not bad. The bundled 15 watt charger took just 2 hours 26 minutes to fully recharge its battery from 20% to 100%.

That gives it a recharging speed of about 55 mAh per minute, which is actually faster than some 25W or 27W fast chargers.

Even so, it cannot make up for the poor battery life, with a poor battery life : recharging ratio of 2.5:1. A general rule of thumb – for one of hour battery life, you just need to charge it for 23 minutes.

Just to give you an idea of how bad that is – the HUAWEI MatePad Pro has a battery life : recharging ratio of 8.5:1, and only needs 7 minutes of charging for each hour of battery life.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus : Our Verdict + Award

It should come to no surprise that the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus is the most powerful Android tablet money can buy. It has the price tag to back that up.

Powered by the speedy Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+, it comes with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. It also has a large 12.4-inch Super AMOLED display with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz.

More than enough to handle any content creation work or gaming you throw at it. But the Galaxy Tab S7 Plus is more than just a powerful tablet.

It comes with a new ultra-low latency S Pen, with a 9 ms response time – a larger version of the ultra-low latency S Pen that ships with the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra smartphone.

The ultra-low response time gives you the same instantaneous feel of putting pen or pencil to paper, which will be especially important for artists.

And we should not forget the new Samsung Notes and Samsung Flow capabilities.

Leveraging on Samsung Cloud, Samsung Notes now automatically saves and syncs your notes and drawings, so you can access them on your PC and Samsung smartphones too.

Samsung Flow, on the other hand, lets you directly transfer files between your phone and tablet without the hassle of uploading them to the cloud.

We also like that Samsung is bundling it (at least here in Malaysia) with the Book Cover Keyboard. That makes it extremely versatile, while protecting its stylus in a special compartment.

We cannot emphasise enough just how useful the Book Cover Keyboard is. It not only protects the tablet and S Pen, it gives you a keyboard and touchpad, turning your Tab S7 Plus into a laptop.

It also comes with a nice set of cameras. A decent 8 MP front camera, when most laptops are still stuck with 720p cameras. That said, Samsung limited its video recording to just 1080p, instead of 4K.

And at the back, a combination of a 13 MP main camera and a 5 MP ultra-wide camera. Far better than what many tablets offer. Of course, most laptops don’t even have a rear camera!

All this makes the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus an extremely powerful and versatile tablet.

Priced at RM 4,599 (roughly US$1,100 | £836 | A$1520 | S$1508), it’s not cheap. But it is definitely much cheaper than the comparable 12.9-inch Apple iPad Pro, especially when you factor the bundled S Pen and Book Cover Keyboard.

It does have some downsides though. A rather poor battery life for one thing. At the standard 60 Hz refresh rate, it lasted just under 8 hours, and you get just over 6 hours if you turn on the Dynamic Refresh Rate.

And while it supports up to 45 watts of super fast charging, Samsung only shipped it with their standard 15 watt charger. Disappointing decision for such an ultra-premium device.

Finally, it is also pretty heavy, especially when used with the Book Cover Keyboard which weighs 502 grams. The tablet itself weighs 575 grams, so the total package comes up to about 1.1 kg.

Overall though, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus is a killer tablet that’s well-positioned as a more affordable alternative to the 12.9-inch Apple iPad Pro.

We like it so much, we believe it deserves our Reviewer’s Choice Award. Nice job, Samsung!

Galaxy Tab S7 Book Cover Keyboard Review : A Must Get!

Find out why the Samsung Book Cover Keyboard is a must-have accessory for the new Galaxy Tab S7+ and Galaxy Tab S7 tablets!

Samsung Book Cover Keyboard : Galaxy Tab S7 | Tab S7+

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+ and Galaxy Tab S7 are both premium laptops powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+.

Many of their key features are similar. The larger Tab S7+ however comes with a larger and better display, with a larger battery.

Here in Malaysia, they both come bundled with an ultra-low latency S Pen, and the Book Cover Keyboard. But in countries where the Samsung Book Cover Keyboard is optional, this is a must-get accessory.

Samsung Book Cover Keyboard : Price + Availability

The Samsung Book Cover Keyboard is available for both Galaxy Tab S7 models. They only differ in their sizes :

Samsung Book Cover Keyboard for Galaxy Tab S7+

Samsung Book Cover Keyboard for Galaxy Tab S7

Samsung Book Cover Keyboard for Galaxy Tab S7+ : Unboxing

The Samsung Book Cover Keyboard comes in a separate retail box. Here is our unboxing video.

Samsung Book Cover Keyboard : A Must-Have!

The Samsung Book Cover Keyboard uses a two-piece design – a front keyboard cover, and a back cover that doubles as a kickstand.

It transforms your Galaxy Tab S7 or Tab S7+ tablet into a virtual laptop, thanks to its integrated keyboard and touchpad.

The kickstand with its “free stop hinge” lets you freely adjust the angle of the tablet all the way to 165°.

But the downsides with a kickstand design – it takes up more space, and works best on a flat surface.

It is rather heavy at 502 grams, but gives you not just a keyboard but a large trackpad as well. In fact, its trackpad is much larger than the trackpad from the Galaxy Tab S6‘s Book Cover Keyboard.

It also has 26% larger keycaps than the Tab S6 version, with a 18.3 mm key pitch. However, its odd-shaped Enter key will get some getting used to.

The Book Cover Keyboard also has an S Pen compartment which nicely fits over its dock, ensuring that you will never lose it.

This compartment is cleverly locked magnetically, and flips open when you need to take out the S Pen, or put it back.

The back cover is thick enough to properly protect the Galaxy Tab S7 and Galaxy Tab S7+’s camera bump.

But that’s really not an issue because the S Pen compartment bulge conveniently keeps the camera bump off any surface you place it on.

HUAWEI MatePad Pro In-Depth Review : A Great Bargain!

We had some time with the HUAWEI MatePad Pro – a premium 10.8-inch tablet built around the Kirin 990 flagship platform.

Find out why we love its complete tablet experience so much, we gave it our Reviewer’s Choice Award!

HUAWEI MatePad Pro : 10.8-inch Flagship Tablet

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro (US | UKMY | SG | AU) is a flagship tablet with a 10.8-inch display. It uses an LCD panel, with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 and a wide DCI-P3 colour gamut.

Built around the HUAWEI Kirin 990 flagship mobile platform, it features fast CPU and GPU cores and two neural processing cores.

HUAWEI is offering it in 5G, 4G and Wi-Fi variants, with 6 GB or 8 GB memory options, and storage options of 128 GB, 256 GB or 512 GB.

Our review sample is the Wi-Fi only model (MRX-W09), with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage. Here is our hands-on experience!

Holding the MatePad Pro vertically, on the left side, you will find its SIM / NM card tray.

In 5G / 4G models, the tray accepts either two nano SIM cards, or one nano SIM card and an NM card.

In Wi-Fi only models like this one – the tray only accepts a single NM card.

The Volume control buttons are located at the top of the right side, near the front and rear cameras.

Next to it is another one of the five microphones that are used to help you record better audio with noise cancellation.

The Power button is located at the top, near the Volume control buttons on the right side. You will also see two rows of speaker ports at the top.

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro actually has a Harman Kardon-tuned quad-speaker system. The other two speakers are located at the bottom, flanking its USB Type C port.

HUAWEI MatePad Pro : A Complete Package

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro (US | UKMY | SG | AU) can be purchased as a tablet alone. But HUAWEI offers a bundle (Midnight Grey | Pearl White) which includes the Smart Magnetic Keyboard and M-pencil.

The Smart Magnetic Keyboard doubles as a case, and offers two stand angles, and a keyboard with 1.3 mm keystroke travel.

The HUAWEI M-pencil is a full-sized stylus with a built-in battery, that lets you writer and draw directly on the MatePad Pro with 4,096 pressure levels.

Both accessories lock magnetically to, and is powered by the MatePad Pro. The M-pencil can also be recharged by any device that supports the Qi wireless charging standard.

This nice bundle (Midnight Grey | Pearl White) gives you a complete tablet experience, right out of the box.

Flagship Kirin 990 Mobile Platform

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro (US | UKMY | SG | AU) uses the latest Kirin 990 mobile SoC, which also powers the P40 Pro smartphones.

The HiSilicon Kirin 990 features a triple-tier architecture, with :

  • two ARM Cortex-A76 high-performance cores at 2.86 GHz
  • two ARM Cortex-A76 sustained performance cores at 2.09 GHz (2.36 GHz for Kirin 990 5G)
  • four ARM Cortex-A55 low-power cores at 1.86 GHz (1.95 GHz for Kirin 990 5G)

It also comes with a powerful 16-core ARM Mali-G76 GPU, and a new Da Vinci neural architecture.

The regular Kirin 990 has with 1 Big Core NPU + 1 Tiny Core NPU, while the Kirin 990 5G has 2 Big Core NPUs + 1 Tiny Core NPU.

RAM + Storage

Our review sample was the MRX-W09 model, with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage.

Out of the 8 GB of RAM, 5.46 GB is available to use – more than enough to easily run multiple apps at the same time.

For perspective, high-end mobile games like PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9 use less than 1.2 GB of RAM.

And out of the box, you have a whopping 241 GB of free storage space – enough to store some 68,000 photos!

256 GB of storage is definitely more than sufficient for most users. But if you ever run out of storage, you can always add additional storage through an NM card.

The NM card is basically a microSD card in the size of a nano SIM card. However, because it is a proprietary HUAWEI storage technology, NM cards cost more than microSD cards, and are harder to come by.

10.8-inch DCI-P3 Display

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro (US | UKMY | SG | AU) comes with a large 10.8-inch display, with a high resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels.

Thanks to its punch hole camera and narrow 4.9 mm bezels, it has a very impressive 90% screen-to-body ratio.

The display has a maximum brightness of 540 nits, which allows for pretty good viewing outdoors, just not under direct sunlight.

More importantly, its wide DCI-P3 colour gamut allows it to accurately replicate the digital movie experience.

Front Camera

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro comes with a decent 8 MP front camera, hidden in a punch hole.

Surprisingly, it can record 4K videos at 30 fps, or 1080p videos at 60 fps. And its large f/2.0 aperture allows for better low-light performance.

Rear Camera

At the back, it has a 13 MP camera with a large f/1.8 aperture for even better low-light performance.

Like the front 8 MP camera, it is capable of recording 4K videos at 30 fps, or 1080p videos at either 30 fps or 60 fps.

This camera is supported by a single LED flash, and a microphone for better audio recording.

HUAWEI MatePad Pro : Battery Life

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro comes with a massive 7,250 mAh battery.

We then ran the PCMark Work 2.0 battery life test until its battery capacity dropped to 20% several times, and this was the best result we obtained :

That’s a phenomenal 14 hours of battery life on a large 10.8-inch display! Very impressive!

Do remember that the display was set to a slightly higher brightness while running the benchmark non-stop for a full 14 hours.

HUAWEI MatePad Pro : Recharging Speed

Our Wi-Fi only model supports 20 watt fast charging, like the 4G models. But do keep in mind that the 5G models support 27 watt fast charging.

Take a look at how fast the HUAWEI MatePad Pro recharges its 7,250 mAh battery using 20 watt fast charging!

Impressive! The HUAWEI MatePad Pro only took 1 hour 38.5 minutes to fully recharge its battery from 20% to 100%.

That gives it a recharging speed of about 58.9 mAh per minute, which is actually faster than some devices that support 25W or 27W fast charging.

This gives it a good battery life : recharging ratio of 8.5:1. A general rule of thumb – for one of hour battery life, you just need to charge it for 7 minutes.

Incidentally, it recharged fastest up to the 90% point, which took just 1 hour 15.5 minutes. The final 10% required an additional 23 minutes.

The Kirin 990 may not be as fast as the greatly improved Samsung Exynos 990, but it certainly offers flagship-class performance.

You will note that it is slightly faster than the Snapdragon 855+, which is overclocked version of Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 855 mobile SoC.

The HiSilicon Kirin 990 is definitely not as fast as the new Samsung Exynos 990, or the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+, but it’s no slouch.

It roughly performs at the same level as last year’s Exynos 9825 that powered the Samsung Galaxy Note10+, can easily handle any games thrown at it.

According to AnTuTu though, the HUAWEI MatePad Pro (US | UKMY | SG | AU) is actually slightly faster than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+, and just 14% slower than the Samsung Exynos 990.

HUAWEI MatePad Pro : Our Verdict + Award

If you are looking for a powerful tablet that is also affordable, the HUAWEI MatePad Pro (US | UKMY | SG | AU) will be right at the top of the list.

Built around the powerful Kirin 990 mobile platform, it comes with a large 10.8-inch DCI-P3 display, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage.

All that is powered by a large 7,250 mAh battery (which lasted 14 hours in our test!), packed in a sleek metal chassis that is less than 8 mm thin, and weighs just 460 grams.

Best of all – HUAWEI is only selling it at the RRP of RM 2,399 / ~US$551 / ~£445 / ~A$909 / ~S$790.

Its closest competitor is the 11-inch Apple iPad Pro, and that costs a whooping RM 3,949 / ~US$923 / ~£739 / ~A$1,342 / ~S$1,285 – a 65% premium over the MatePad Pro!

And it gets even better when you add in the accessories. To make it easier to compare, we created this table :

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro with all of its accessories has a RRP of RM 3,197 / ~US$747 / ~£596 / ~A$1,086 / ~S$1,040.

But while Apple products have fixed prices, you can actually get the full MatePad Pro bundle at lower prices. For example, the official bundle deals for Midnight Grey | Pearl White here in Malaysia.

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro definitely wins hands down, based on value proposition alone. You can actually buy two full MatePad Pro bundles (Midnight Grey | Pearl White) for the price of a single 11-inch iPad Pro bundle, and have enough money leftover for a nice meal for two!

That is why we are very glad to give the HUAWEI MatePad Pro (US | UKMY | SG | AU) our Reviewer’s Choice Award!

HUAWEI MatePad Pro : No Google Mobile Services?

Now, let’s address elephant in the room – the HUAWEI MatePad Pro (US | UKMY | SG | AU) runs on EMUI 10.1, with HMS (HUAWEI Mobile Services), instead of GMS (Google Mobile Services).

This means you no longer have access to the Google Play Store, and have to use HUAWEI AppGallery instead.

This is really not a big issue for many users, because HUAWEI has worked hard to add many key apps to their AppGallery. You can see just how many apps are already available on AppGallery in this video :

Even so, there is simply no way for HUAWEI to replicate the tons of Android apps that are already on Google Play Store.

For apps that are not available on the HUAWEI AppGallery, you will have to use HUAWEI Phone Clone, or directly download their APK installation files from APK repositories.

The lack of Google Play Services and the Google Play Store will, undoubtedly, be an issue for many users. Some Android require GMS for certain features :

  • Telegram : GMS is required for location services. You can use it, you just cannot search for a location, or share your location.
  • Gmail : You will have to use a different email client, like Outlook. Or just use a web browser to get access to Gmail.
  • YouTube : The YouTube app requires GMS, so you will have to watch YouTube on a web browser.
  • Grab : The Grab app requires GMS for mapping functions. You can use it, but you won’t be able to locate your current position, or track your trip.

That’s why we cannot give the MatePad Pro our Editor’s Choice Award, even though it would have qualified.

But if you can live with what’s available on HUAWEI AppGallery, or are comfortable downloading from APK repositories, then the HUAWEI MatePad Pro (US | UKMY | SG | AU) offers truly great value for your money.

HUAWEI MatePad Pro : Price + Availability

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro is available in the Midnight Grey or Pearl White colour options at these launch prices :

  • 5G (6GB + 128GB) : €599
  • 5G (8GB + 256GB) : €699
  • Wi-Fi (8GB + 256GB) : RM 2,399 / ~US$551 / ~£445 / ~A$909 / ~S$790

Apple iPad 7th Gen vs Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 : Who Wins?

After a hiatus of 18 months, Apple finally launched the 7th Generation iPad – at around the same time Samsung released their Galaxy Tab S6.

So how do these two tablets compare against each other? Let’s pit the 7th Gen iPad against the Galaxy Tab S6 and find out!

Note : This is not a fair comparison because the 7th Gen iPad is a mid-range device, while the Galaxy Tab S6 is a flagship device. Yet, there are people who are actively considering these two options – this comparison is for them.

iPad 7th Gen vs Galaxy Tab S6 Compared!

Display : Samsung Galaxy Tab S6

They both have similarly-sized display – the 7th Gen iPad has a 10.2-inch display, while the Galaxy Tab S6 has a slightly larger 10.5-inch display.

The 7th Gen iPad has a resolution of 1620 x 2160 pixels, with a pixel density of 264 ppi. The Galaxy Tab S6, on the other hand, has a wider display with a resolution of 1600 x 2560 pixels and a slightly higher pixel density of 287 ppi.

But what won us over was the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6’s Super AMOLED display, which is certainly superior to the iPad’s IPS display.

Design : Samsung Galaxy Tab S6

Design-wise, they are very similar – large slabs of glass and metal. However, the Galaxy Tab S6 has a far more refined design with narrow bezels, while Apple maintained the iPad’s classic large bezels.

This allows the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 to give you a larger display in a 11% smaller form factor than the 7th Gen iPad.

Performance : Samsung Galaxy Tab S6

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8150 – a 2018 flagship mobile SoC (like the Kirin 980 used in the new HUAWEI MediaPad M6).

So it runs rings around the Apple A10 Fusion, which was introduced in September 2016, as these results show!

Benchmarks Samsung Galaxy
Tab S6
Apple iPad
7th Generation
Difference
AnTuTu 441,406 260,080 +69.7%
Ice Storm Unlimited 78,767 38,262 +105.9%
Sling Shot 7,051 3,464 +103.6%
Sling Shot Extreme 5,277 2,559 +106.2%

RAM + Storage : Samsung Galaxy Tab S6

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 comes with a base configuration of 6 GB RAM + 128 GB of storage, with the option for 8 GB RAM + 256 GB of storage. It even comes with a microSD card slot, so you can add up to 1 TB of additional storage!

The Apple iPad 7th Gen tablet, in contrast, only comes with 3 GB of RAM, and either 32 GB or 128 GB of storage. Needless to say – the iPad does not come with any microSD card slot, or any other external storage option.

Cameras : Samsung Galaxy Tab S6

Unbelievably, Apple continues to use the ancient 1.2 MP front camera in the 7th iteration of the iPad. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 has a far superior 8 MP front camera, with a brighter f/2.0 aperture.

In the back, Apple retained the old 8 MP camera with f/2.2 aperture. The Galaxy Tab S6 offers a dual-camera system – a 13 MP main camera, and a 5 MP ultra-wide camera.

This is an easy win for the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 over the Apple iPad 7th Gen.

Stylus : Samsung Galaxy Tab S6

Both the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 and the Apple iPad 7th Gen support the use of a stylus.

Apple has repeatedly declined to reveal the pressure sensitivity of their Apple Pencil, even while Samsung proudly declares that their S Pen supports 4,096 pressure levels.

On top of that, the Galaxy Tab S6 ships with the S Pen included, while the iPad does not – you need to pay an extra $99 for the first-generation Apple Pencil.

Connectivity : Samsung Galaxy Tab S6

Because it’s built around a newer platform, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8150, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 supports up to LTE Cat 20, WiFi-AC and Bluetooth 5.0.

The Apple iPad 7th Gen supports WiFi-AC as well, but falls short in LTE and Bluetooth connectivity – it only supports “Gigabit-class LTE”, and Bluetooth 4.2.

Audio : Samsung Galaxy Tab S6

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 comes with a quad speaker system tuned by AKG, as well as support for Dolby Atmos. The Apple iPad, on the other hand, only comes with stereo speakers.

Fingerprint Sensor : Samsung Galaxy Tab S6

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 has an optical fingerprint sensor placed under the display, while the 7th Gen iPad continues to use the same old Touch ID sensor that is integrated into the Home button.

Functionally, they are similar, but the more expensive optical in-display fingerprint sensor allows for a more compact form factor.

Battery : Samsung Galaxy Tab S6

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 comes with a large 27.11 WHr battery, while the Apple iPad 7th Gen has a 19.5% larger 32.4 WHr battery.

But in our test, running full-screen YouTube through Wi-Fi with the display set to 50%, the Galaxy Tab S6 ended up with a longer battery life :

Battery Life Samsung Galaxy
Tab S6
Apple iPad
7th Generation
Difference
Full Screen YouTube 12.5 hours 10.7 hours +16.8%

Weight : Samsung Galaxy Tab S6

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 weighs just 420 g, while the Apple iPad 7th Gen weighs 483 g (WiFi-only) or 493 g (LTE).

Price : Apple iPad 7th Gen

The biggest advantage the Apple iPad 7th Gen has over the Galaxy Tab S6 is its much lower price tag. Here’s a price comparison of the Wi-Fi only models of both tablets, with 128 GB of storage :

128 GB (Wi-Fi) Samsung Galaxy

United Kingdom £619 £449 +37.9%

Of course, the 7th Gen iPad does NOT come with an Apple Pencil, which adds RM 419 / S$138 / US$99 / £89 / A$145 to the price tag.

iPad 7th Gen vs Galaxy Tab S6 : Which Should YOU Buy?

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 was always going to win over the Apple iPad 7th Gen, in all aspects except price. After all, it is Samsung’s flagship tablet.

However, not everyone needs a Porsche like the Galaxy Tab S6. A minivan like the 7th Gen iPad may better suit your needs. So here is our advice :

  • If you want a powerful tablet, with the best possible performance, with the option to add storage through a microSD card, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 is worth considering.
  • If you want a cheap tablet to view photos and videos, and play simple games, nothing beats the Apple iPad 7th Gen.
