Samsung Galaxy A52 : Key Features

6.5-inch Super AMOLED Display

The Samsung Galaxy A52 comes with a large 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display, with a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels.

You may be delighted to learn that it not only supports a higher 90 Hz refresh rate, it also has 800 nits of maximum brightness!

The display is also Eye Care-certified, and automatically adjusts its colour temperature to reduce eye fatigue – what Samsung calls Eye Comfort Shield.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G

The Samsung Galaxy A52 is built around the Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G (SM7225) mobile platform, which consists of :

  • 2 x high-performance Kryo 570 Gold cores, running at up to 2.3 GHz
  • 6 x low-power Kryo 570 Silver cores, running at up to 1.8 GHz
  • Qualcomm Adreno 619 GPU
  • Qualcomm Hexagon 694 NPU
  • Qualcomm Spectra 355L ISP

Fabricated on the 8 nm process technology, this mid-range mobile SoC promises to deliver 20% faster CPU, 20% faster AI and 10% faster graphics performance over its predecessor, the Snapdragon 730G.

RAM + Storage

The Samsung Galaxy A52 comes with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. This is way more than what most users can ever expect to use.

But if you actually need more storage, it comes with a hybrid SIM tray, which allows you to add a microSD card for more storage!

1 + 4 Cameras!

The Samsung Galaxy A52 boasts a 32 MP front camera, with a wide f/2.2 aperture. The ultra-high resolution is, frankly, overkill for a selfie camera.

So if you don’t need the high resolution, switch to the 8 MP resolution for better low-light photos and videos.

In the back, it has a quad camera system that consists of :

  • 64 MP main camera, with f/1.8 aperture
  • 12 MP ultra-wide camera, with f/2.2 aperture
  • 5 MP macro camera, with f/2.4 aperture
  • 5 MP depth camera, with f/2.4 aperture

We should point out that the depth camera doesn’t take any photos.. It just obtains depth data to allow for more accurate software bokeh effects.

We really like how the matte colour scheme makes the slight camera bump appear even less conspicuous.

Connectivity

While the Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G is a 5G platform, 5G connectivity was turned off in our Galaxy A52. It may be offered as a 5G model in some countries, but not in Malaysia.

That’s just fine by us as we don’t see 5G connectivity becoming widespread for at least 3-4 more years! Turning off 5G will also help save power and extend battery life.

It also supports Wi-Fi 5 (802.11a/b/g/n/ac), as well as Bluetooth 5.0 and USB Type C connectivity.

Samsung Galaxy Ecosystem

The Samsung Galaxy A52 will allow you to be part of the Samsung ecosystem through these features :

  • SmartThings lets you connect to, and control, smart devices including wearables, tablets, PCs and TVs.
  • SmartThings Find lets you easily locate paired Galaxy devices, or using the Galaxy SmartTag.
  • Music Share lets you sync your phone with a friend’s device to share music, without speaker pairing.
  • Buds Together lets you pair your phone with two sets of Galaxy Buds, to listen together!
  • Quick Share lets you easily and quickly send pictures and videos of any size to nearby Galaxy devices.
  • Private Share lets you revoke photos and videos you shared with just a tap!

Security + Protection

The Samsung Galaxy A52 has Samsung Knox built-in, providing you with a defence-grade enclave to store your sensitive information and data.

is IP67-rated against dust- and water-resistance. This protects it against accidental water splashes, and immersion in up to 1 metre of fresh water, for up to 30 minutes.

We should point out that Samsung warns against immersing it in seawater, the swimming pool or in soapy water.

Samsung Galaxy A52 : Camera Performance + Photo Samples

The Samsung Galaxy A52’s 64 MP main camera takes 16 MP photos by default, with a resolution of 4624 x 3468 pixels.

The 46 MP sensor basically combines four pixels into one large “virtual pixel”, for better image quality and low-light performance.

The Galaxy A52 produces very good photos with really incredible detail at 16 MP, so stick with that unless you are planning to print really large format photos.

While the wide f/1.8 aperture creates a narrow depth-of-field, so there is the risk of ending up with an out-of-focus photo.

It is easy to “fix” that problem by tapping on the screen to make sure the camera focuses exactly where you want it to.

While this works with all smartphones, the Galaxy A52 does a much better job focusing than say, the Redmi 9T.

Here are ten unedited photo samples for you to check out.

Samsung Galaxy A52 : Battery Life

The Samsung Galaxy A52 comes with a large 4,500 mAh battery.

To test its battery life, we turned off Automatic Brightness, and set its display brightness to 50%.

Why 50%? That is actually slightly higher than the average indoor brightness level of 40% during the day, and is what we usually use in all our mobile battery life tests.

It is important to fix the brightness level, to make sure the screen brightness does not change as the ambient brightness changes.

We then ran the PCMark Work 2.0 battery life test until its battery capacity dropped to 20% several times, and this was the best result we obtained with 60 Hz and 90 Hz refresh rates :

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G is a powerful mid-range mobile SoC. It is actually as powerful as the flagship Samsung Exynos 9820 in work applications!

Samsung Galaxy A52 Gaming Performance : 3DMark

For gaming, we first tested the Galaxy A52 using 3DMark, with these results :

The Samsung Galaxy A52 is definitely not as fast in games, as flagship mobile platforms. But it is just over twice as fast as mid-range smartphones like the Redmi 9T.

We then tested the Galaxy A52 using AnTuTu, yielding these results :

Will you look at that? The Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G is right between the Exynos 9820 and Exynos 9825 – both flagship mobile SoCs from Samsung.

It is also notably twice as fast as the old Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 used in the Xiaomi Redmi 9T.

Samsung Galaxy A52 : A Quick Wrap

The Galaxy A52 offers quite the awesome deal that Samsung promised. Let’s do a quick wrap of what we really liked about it.

Very Nice Display

The Samsung Galaxy A52 has a very nice 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a 90 Hz refresh rate, and brightness of up to 800 nits!

Great Performance

We are very glad Samsung built the Galaxy A52 around the Snapdragon 750G, which proved to offer really good CPU and GPU performance. It feels like a flagship device, without the flagship price.

Nice Set Of Cameras

The Samsung Galaxy A52 comes with a very nice set of cameras – both in front and in the back.

The 64 MP main camera and 12 MP ultra-wide camera are the main stars. The 5 MP macro camera will not see much use, but at least it is better than the 2 MP macro camera that comes in some mid-range devices!

The image quality of the 64 MP main camera, in particular, is superb in its default 16 MP mode.

Long Battery Life, Fast Recharging

You will really like how long the Galaxy A52 lasts, and how fast it recharges.

Small Niceties

There are a couple of small features that could be very important, and yet are not available in other mid-range smartphones :

  • 3.5 mm audio port
  • AKG-tuned speakers
  • Triple card tray with microSD card slot

Samsung Galaxy A52 : Our Verdict + Award

The Samsung Galaxy A52 offers a lot of great features and a very long battery life, at a great price point.

There are very few smartphones at this price point that would offer you a large 90 Hz Super AMOLED display, a powerful processor and a 64 MP camera system, with a large battery.

This is why we believe it deserves nothing less than our Editor’s Choice Award! Congratulations, Samsung!

Samsung Galaxy A52 : Where To Buy?

The Samsung Galaxy A52 has a launch price of RM1,499 (approx. US$362 / £262 / A$474 / S$487) with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage.

Here in Malaysia, it will come with a FREE clear standing cover worth RM109.

Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, Galaxy S21 Ultra Compared!

In this article, we compared the differences between the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+ and Galaxy S21 Ultra, so you can decide which is the best model for you!

Samsung Galaxy S21, S21+, S21 Ultra Compared!

With a 6.2-inch display, the Samsung Galaxy S21 is designed for those who want a light, compact flagship smartphone.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus, on the other hand, has a larger 6.7-inch display and a larger battery – great for marathon gamers and binge-watchers.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy S21 Ultra offers the ultimate productivity and creativity possibilities with its 6.8-inch display and support for the S Pen.

All three Galaxy S21 models are powered by the same mobile SoC – the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 in the US, South Korea and China, and the Samsung Exynos 2100 in all other countries.

All three models feature Samsung’s Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel, with a dynamic 120 Hz refresh rate. However, while the S21 and S21+ can only go down to 48 Hz, while the S21 Ultra can go as low as 10 Hz.

They are all protected by Gorilla Glass Victus in the front, with IP68 dust and water-resistance; and come with 18 watt wireless charging and 25 watt wired charging capability.

While the Galaxy S21+ appears to be a larger variant of the Galaxy S21 with a larger battery, the Galaxy S21 Ultra comes with more memory and a completely different camera system.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is also the only model to support the S Pen stylus.

If Ultra-wideband support is important, you should note that it is only supported by Galaxy S21+ and Galaxy S21 Ultra.

2021 Samsung Galaxy Unpacked : Are You Ready?

The 2021 Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event is almost here! Are you ready for the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S21 smartphones?

While we wait for the official launch on 14 January 2021, here is everything we know about the S21 series so far!

2021 Samsung Galaxy Unpacked : Are You Ready?

Samsung is kicking off 2021 with a big bang on January 14 – the first Galaxy Unpacked of the year!

Unlike previous years, they are going to announce their latest Galaxy S21 smartphones on the last day of CES 2021, instead of during Mobile World Congress in February or March.

Like the 2021 Samsung TV first look, this will be a global event that will be streamed online on the official Samsung website.

The 2021 Samsung Galaxy Unpacked will be broadcast globally on www.samsung.com (www.samsung.com/my here in Malaysia) at 11 PM (GMT+8) on 14 January 2021.

If you register your interest at https://www.samsung.com/my/unpacked/ by 14 January 2021, you will be entitled to redeem a FREE Samsung Galaxy Fit2 worth RM179 when you pre-order any Galaxy S21 smartphone!

2021 Samsung Galaxy Unpacked : What We Know So Far!

The 2021 Samsung Galaxy Unpacked will be the official launch of the Samsung Galaxy S21 series of smartphones. Here is what we know so far… based on what’s been leaked.

Three Galaxy Galaxy S21 Models

Samsung will offer three models :

  • 6.2-inch Galaxy S21
  • 6.7-inch Galaxy S21+ (Galaxy S21 Plus)
  • 6.8-inch Galaxy S21 Ultra

Displays

All three models will come with a Dynamic AMOLED display, with dynamic refresh rates of up to 120 Hz.

  • Galaxy S21 : 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED display (1080 x 2220, 120 Hz)
  • Galaxy S21+ : 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED display (1080 x 2220, 120 Hz)
  • Galaxy S21 Ultra : 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED display (1440 x 2960, 120 Hz)

Performance

All three Samsung Galaxy S21 smartphone models will either use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, or the Samsung Exynos 2100.

Geekbench 5 Scores Single Core Multi Core
Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 1,135 3,794
Samsung Exynos 2100
(Rumoured)
1,108 3,963

Samsung will offer memory options of 8 GB to 12 GB (Ultra), and storage options of 128 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB (Ultra).

Unlike the S20 series, the S21 series is rumoured NOT to come with a microSD card slot at all. 🙁

Front Camera

We believe the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+ will both come with a 10 MP front camera, in a central punch hole.

Only the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra will come with a higher-resolution 40 MP front camera.

Front Cameras

Both the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+ will come with a triple camera system :

  • 12 MP main camera
  • 12 MP ultra-wide camera
  • 64 MP telephoto camera

Only the Galaxy S21 Ultra will come with a significantly better quad-camera system, with a laser autofocus system :

  • 108 MP main camera
  • 12 MP ultra-wide camera
  • 10 MP telephoto camera (3X zoom)
  • 10 MP telephoto camera (10X zoom)

S Pen Stylus

The Samsung Galaxy S21 will not have an integrated S Pen, like the Galaxy Note20 series.

However, the Galaxy S21 Ultra will support an external S Pen, with an optional case with a storage slot.

Battery

The three models will come with different battery sizes :

  • Galaxy S21 : 4,000 mAh
  • Galaxy S21+ : 4,800 mAh
  • Galaxy S21 Ultra : 5,000 mAh

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 120Hz Refresh Rate Explained!

One of the new features introduced in the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE is a 120 Hz refresh rate for its Super AMOLED display!

Find out what this 120 Hz refresh rate means, and how it allows for smoother scrolling and a more realistic gaming experience!

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G : A Quick Primer!

The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G comes with the best features from the Galaxy S20 smartphone, in a streamlined premium design.

The Galaxy S20 FE 5G comes with a slightly larger 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display, and a much faster 120 Hz refresh rate.

It is now powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 mobile platform with 8 GB of LPDDR5 memory, and up to 256 GB of storage capacity.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G : 120 Hz Refresh Rate Explained

The display refresh rate is the frequency at which the display refreshes the image on screen every second. Hence, it is measured and described in Hz.

The usual refresh rate of 60 Hz means the image on the display gets refreshed 60 times a second.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G comes with a Super AMOLED display that can refresh at up to 120 Hz – 120 times per second.

The higher refresh rate offers smoother visuals, and less motion blur. This gives you a better visual experience, whether you are gaming or browsing the web.

Samsung Galaxy Note20 Series Camera Technologies : What’s New?

The new Samsung Galaxy Note20 and Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G smartphones come with a brand new camera system, with larger high-resolution sensors, and improved Space Zoom technology!

Let’s take a look at the new camera technologies in the Samsung Galaxy Note20 family of smartphones!

Samsung Galaxy Note20 Series Camera : Ultra-High Resolution

The Samsung Galaxy Note20 series smartphones come with new ultra-high resolution cameras :

The ultra-high resolution photos they take allow you to zoom in, and crop a section you want, without losing any detail in that picture!

Samsung did not just increase the number of pixels on their sensors, they also greatly increased the sensor size. This increases the amount of light each pixel receives, so that they will deliver better image quality, even in low-light conditions.

Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G Camera : Nonacell Technology

The 108MP Samsung HM1 image sensor in the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G comes with Nonacell technology, which combines groups of nine pixels into much larger 2.4μm pixels.

This gives you a 12 MP picture instead of an 108 MP picture, but each pixel will receive 9X more light for much better clarity in low-light conditions!

In addition, Nonacell uses the Samsung ISOCELL Plus technology to dramatically reduce crosstalk, optical loss and light reflection that happens when pixels are combined.

Samsung Galaxy Note20 Series Camera : Space Zoom Technology

The Samsung Space Zoom Technology combines their improved Hybrid Optic Zoom (Note20) or Optical Zoom (Note20 Ultra 5G), with AI multi-frame processing enhancements to give you incredible zoom ranges.

In addition to their incredible zoom ranges, the improved Samsung Space Zoom features smooth transitions between presets, and a manual zoom mode.

They both allow for more professional videos, with greater creative options.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 : Hands-On In Both Colour Options!

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 has the same design language as the Galaxy Note 20 smartphones, with two colour options.

The signature Mystic Bronze colour has a satin matte finish, which they call a haze finish. The Mystic Black colour, on the other hand, has a highly-reflective mirror finish.

The Cover Screen is now much bigger at 6.2-inch, and encompasses almost the entirety of the front.

The Main Screen is slightly larger in size, but appears significantly larger because the large notch at the upper right corner has been replaced by a tiny punch hole for the front camera.

You can see the crease along the centerline, but it appears to be less noticeable than in the Galaxy Fold.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 has two front cameras. The first is the 10 MP Cover Camera, with f/2.2 aperture. This is the “front camera” when the device is folded.

When it’s unfolded, the Display Camera becomes the front camera. It is also a 10 MP camera with f/2.2 aperture.

At the back, it comes with three cameras, supported by an LED flash, but no laser autofocus system like the Note20 Ultra.

  • Main Camera : 12 MP Dual Pixel sensor, f/1.8 aperture
  • Ultra-Wide Camera : 12 MP sensor, f/2.2 aperture
  • Telephoto Camera : 12 MP sensor, f/2.4 aperture

The Power button (with an integrated fingerprint sensor) and Volume control buttons are located along the right edge.

The SIM tray is located on the left edge, right at the bottom.

The top is clean. You will only find a speaker and a microphone here.

At the bottom, you will only find the USB Type C port, with a second set of microphone and speaker ports.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra : Key Features

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is the larger version of the Galaxy Note 20, designed for “enthusiasts who want the most powerful Galaxy device” they can buy.

Dynamic AMOLED 2X Display

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X curved display, with a resolution of 1440 x 3088 pixels and a pixel density of 496 ppi.

This display has a 120 Hz refresh rate, but the higher refresh rate can only be activated with the Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2316 pixels. The maximum WQHD+ resolution can only run at 60 Hz.

But even at the 60 Hz refresh rate, the display has a 240 Hz touch rate and a maximum brightness of 1500 nits (very bright!), and supports HDR10+ colour.

Performance

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is powered by the Samsung Exynos Octa 990 globally, with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ in the United States.

Exynos 990 Snapdragon 865+
Process 7 nm EUV 7 nm N7P
CPU Cores 2 x Exynos M5 (2.7 GHz)
2 x Cortex-A76 (2.5 GHz)
4 x Cortex-A55 (2.0 GHz)
1 x Kryo 585 Gold (3.1 GHz)
3 x Kryo 585 Gold (2.4 GHz)
4 x Kryo 585 Silver (1.8 GHz)
GPU Mali-G77 MP11 Adreno 650
Memory Support LPDDR5 LPDDR5
Storage Support UFS 3.0 / 2.1 UFS 3.0
5G Modem Exynos 5123 (Separate)
– 7.35 Gbps
Snapdragon X55 (Separate)
– 7.5 Gbps

It is kept cool by the world’s slimmest vapour chamber, but while that may ensure great performance, the chassis will get pretty toasty while running at full load.

5G Connectivity

While Samsung offers a 4G variant for about $100 (RM 400) less, our unit came with 5G connectivity built-in, courtesy of the Samsung Exynos Modem 5123 multi-mode 5G modem.

This is a separate multi-mode 5G modem, which offers transfer rates of up to 7.35 Gbps in mmWave, and 5.1 Gbps in sub-6GHz.

The downside of using a separate chip (instead of an integrated modem) is its higher power consumption, and thermal output. But unless there is 5G connectivity where you live, it is really irrelevant.

Front Camera

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a 10 MP front camera with an f/2.2 aperture, in a centrally-located punch hole.

Even though it doesn’t come with the 40 MP sensor like the Galaxy S20 Ultra, its Samsung ISOCELL SAK3J1 sensor is capable of recording 4K video at 60 fps.

Triple Camera System

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra comes with a triple camera system that consists of :

  • a 108 MP main camera, with f/1.8 aperture
  • a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, with f/2.2 aperture
  • a 12 MP telephoto camera, with f/3.0 aperture

The 12MP telephoto camera supports 5X optical zoom, and up to 50X Space Zoom. And the 108MP main camera is paired with an Advanced Hybrid Laser Autofocus System.

It also supports up to 8K video recording at 24 fps, as well as 720p video recording at up to 120 Hz, and a new Pro Video Mode, which introduces :

  • adjustable zoom speed, for smoother and more dramatic zoom action
  • adjustable audio source, letting you focus audio recording in a specific direction
    – default, front, rear, USB and Bluetooth (with Galaxy Buds Live)

Ultra-Wideband Technology (UWB)

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra supports Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, which enables the newly-announced Google Nearby Share feature – letting you share files by pointing at compatible devices.

UWB technology also allows it to function as digital keys. And in the future, Samsung will introduce SmartThings, which lets you locate objects using AR (Augmented Reality).

Hybrid SIM Tray

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 comes with a Hybrid SIM tray at the top. It allows you to either use two nano SIM cards, or one nano SIM card and a microSD card for additional storage.

Although our unit came with 256 GB of storage – more than enough for most users – we still recommend using a fast microSD card to store photos and videos recorded by its camera.

This ensures that your photos and videos can be retrieved even if you accidentally roll over the Galaxy Note 20 with a tank…

Improved S Pen

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra comes with an improved S Pen with much lower latency (9 ms) than the Galaxy Note 20 (25 ms), and a lithium titanate battery that gives it 24 hour standby time.

The new S Pen will also support Anywhere actions – general Air actions that will work with any app :

  • Move Backwards
  • Home
  • Recent App
  • Smart Select
  • Screen Capture

Bigger Battery, Faster Charging

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra comes with a 4,500 mAh battery, which is just a little larger than the Galaxy Note 10+‘s 4,300 mAh battery.

It supports 25W super fast charging, which lets it to recharge 50% of its battery capacity in just 30 minutes.

Wireless Samsung DeX

Naturally, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra supports Samsung DeX, which has been enhanced to support wireless projection. So yes, you no longer need a cable to use Dex!

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra : Photo Samples

Like the Galaxy S20 Ultra, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra uses the Samsung ISOCELL Bright HM1 sensor, which is notable for its large 1/33-inch sensor size and ultra-high resolution of 108 MP.

But it defaults to 12 MP – combining nine pixels into one for better image quality, especially in low-light conditions.

At the default 12 MP resolution using the new HEIC file format, each 4000 x 3000 pixel picture has a file size of only about 2-3 MB.

Even using the HEIC file format, the full 108 MP resolution of 2000 x 9000 pixels has a much larger file size of 10-20 MB!

Here are 10 high-resolution unedited samples for you to check out. Click on them to load the full-sized photos, which you can also download to examine.

The pictures look really good at the default 12 MP, with great detail even if you blow them up 100%. You really don’t need to go full 108 MP.

The main camera has a very narrow depth-of-field, which makes for great background bokeh but can be very difficult to focus on the subject – a problem we noted with the Galaxy S20 Ultra camera.

However, the new laser autofocus system seems to greatly reduce the risk of getting out-of-focus pictures.

It lets the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra accurately determine the distance of objects at short distances, letting it better decide which object to focus on.

Even so, we recommend that you tap on the subject to ensure that the camera knows what you really want to focus on.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra : Video Samples

Like the Galaxy S20 Ultra, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is capable of recording 8K video from its 108 MP main camera.

But it no longer has the 5 minute limit, and even supports electronic image stabilisation, as well as optical image stabilisation provided by the lens.

It retains the ability to switch between cameras, and the Camera app now lets you smoothly zoom all the way to 20X at 30 fps, with six preset steps – 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 4x, 10x and 20x.

If you wish to record 60 fps videos (whether 1080p or 4K), then you are limited to a maximum zoom of 10x.

When you use the zoom presets, it no longer “jumps”, but transitions smoothly for a more professional effect.

However, the Camera app requires you to pinch to zoom before the zoom presets appear – a major hindrance that we hope they will soon correct.

Video Sample #1 : 20X Space Zoom

While you can zoom all the way to 50X for photos, Space Zoom is limited to 20X for videos.

The best image quality though is limited to 10X zoom. Beyond that, it starts to get blurry, and image stabilisation isn’t that good.

Video Sample #2 : 1080p vs 4K Space Zoom

In this video, we compare the 20X Space Zoom performance while recording at 1080p and 4K resolutions. At 8K, you are limited to just 6X zoom.

It seems to perform similarly well at both resolutions. Best image quality and stabilisation is seen at up to 10x zoom.

Video Sample #3 : Image Stabilisation At 1080p

Image stabilisation at 1080p is very good, with gimbal-like performance. When we stopped walking at the end, the hand shake is almost imperceptible.

Handheld video recording is excellent at 1080p, even without turning on Super Steady mode!

Video Sample #4 : Image Stabilisation At 4K

At 4K, vertical image stabilisation is very good, which almost eradicates the up and down movement of walking. However, panning appears rather jerkier than at 1080p.

Turning on Super Steady mode will smoothen things out, but drops the resolution to 1080p.

Video Sample #5 : Image Stabilisation At 8K

At 8K, there does not appear to be any electronic image stabilisation, but fortunately, most of the jerkiness is smoothened out by the optical image stabilisation provided by the lens.

While not as gimbal-like smooth as 1080p or 4K, the image stabilisation at 8K is decent enough.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra : Battery Life

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra comes with a large 4,500 mAh battery.

We then ran the PCMark Work 2.0 battery life test until its battery capacity dropped to 20% several times, and this was the best result we obtained :

So there you have it – increasing the display refresh rate on the Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra from 60Hz to 120Hz will reduce its battery life by about 25% or roughly 2.5 hours.

This is why Samsung does not allow you to lock the display at 120 Hz, but set it to Adaptive mode which switches to 120 Hz only when it helps to deliver a better experience.

If battery life is important, you can set the display to Standard mode, which sets the display to 60 Hz, giving you 2.5 hours (34%) longer battery life!

With the display set to 60 Hz, it has a pretty good battery life : recharging ratio of 9:1. A general rule of thumb – for one of hour battery life, you just need to charge it for 6.5 minutes.

But if you keep the display set to 120 Hz, its battery life : recharging ratio drops to just 7:1. That means for one of hour battery life, you will need to charge it for 9 minutes.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra : Memory + Storage

All Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra smartphones come with 12 GB of LPDDR5 memory, of which 7 GB is free and available to use.

That’s really way more memory than you will ever need to use, since even high-end mobile games like PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9 use less than 1.2 GB of RAM!

Our review sample came with 256 GB of fast UFS 3.0 internal storage, of which just under 222 GB is free and available to use.

That’s enough to store some 70,000 photos, or 12 hours of 4K videos, or 6 hours of 8K videos. But should you run out of space, you can always add a microSD card for additional storage.

Note : We tested the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra against last year’s Galaxy Note10+ and Galaxy S10+ devices, as well as the two fastest Qualcomm devices we have in the lab. We will update this article when we are able to get our hands on faster Qualcomm devices.

We tested the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra using PCMark, which simulates work applications like web browsing, playing video, writing text and editing photos.

The Exynos 990 variant of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra was 25% faster than the Black Shark 2 Pro, which is powered by Snapdragon 855+, and 17% faster than last year’s Galaxy Note10+ (Exynos 9825).

That is quite a nice surprise, since Samsung Exynos has historically been rather poor at work performance.

However, the Snapdragon 865+ variant of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra should be about 17.3% faster than the Exynos 990 variant, based on our tests using the Galaxy Tab S7+.

Sling Shot 8793 8128 8127 4883 4343

Not bad! The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra was as fast as the Black Shark 2 Pro (Snapdragon 855+) in Sling Shot, and 6% faster in Sling Shot Extreme.

It was 12% to 21% faster than the Xiaomi Mi 9 (Snapdragon 855), and impressively, 32% to 66% faster than last year’s Galaxy Note10+ (Exynos 9825).

But if you can get the Snapdragon 865+ variant, that would be even faster, by about 5% in OpenGL, and 13% in Vulkan, based on our tests using the Galaxy Tab S7+.

In AnTuTu, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra was 20% faster than the Black Shark 2 Pro (Snapdragon 855+) and 40% faster than the Xiaomi Mi 9 (Snapdragon 855)!

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra was even faster when we compared it to last year’s Galaxy Note10+ (Exynos 9825) – 50% faster, and Galaxy S10+ (Exynos 9820) – 58% faster!

But yet again, if you can get the Snapdragon 865+ variant, it would be faster by 2% (OpenGL Physics) to 21% (Vulkan Graphics), based on our tests using the Galaxy Tab S7+.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra : Our Verdict

After trying out both the Exynos 990 variant of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, and the Galaxy Tab S7+ which is powered by Snapdragon 865+, here is our verdict.

Processor variant aside, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is an impressive, if evolutionary upgrade, to last year’s Galaxy Note10+.

It comes with a better Dynamic AMOLED 2X display which boasts an incredibly bright 1500 nits panel with a 120 Hz refresh rate and Gorilla Glass Victus protection.

In addition to a faster and more power-efficient processor, it comes with faster and more power-efficient LPDDR5 memory.

It also comes with a refined triple camera system using the same 108MP sensor from the Galaxy S20 Ultra, but with a better 5X optical zoom lens, and a laser autofocus system.

However, most of the improvements are not easily discerned from its spec sheet. Things like :

  • Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Technology
  • Wireless Samsung DeX projection
  • Improved S Pen with much lower latency and Anywhere actions
  • Adjustable camera zoom speed and audio source

Hence, Samsung has been trying to shift the focus away from the hardware differences from the Galaxy Note10+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra, to what the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra can help users do.

That is true, of course – we use our smartphones to perform tasks, not run benchmarks. In that regard, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra offers capabilities that are simply not available in smartphones from other brands.

  • If you want a mini tablet-like work experience with a stylus, do you really have a better option than a Galaxy Note?
  • If you don’t need a stylus, but want a desktop-like work experience, your other choice is really the Galaxy S20 series.

But hardware still matters when we talk about its value proposition. As our Snapdragon 865+ vs Exynos 990 performance comparison shows, the Snapdragon 865+ is definitely a much faster mobile platform than the Exynos 990.

  • PCMark : +19.4% faster
  • Sling Shot Extreme (OpenGL) : +4.8% faster
  • Sling Shot Extreme (Vulkan) : +12.8% faster
  • Sling Shot : +8.2% faster
  • AnTuTu : +10.5% faster

Samsung appears to acknowledge this deficit by doubling the internal storage capacity of the Exynos 990 models.

Some have pointed out that while you can add storage via an microSD card, you can’t “add performance”.

But should this 10% average performance deficit really put you off the Exynos 990 variant of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra?

Frankly, the average user is unlikely to notice the performance difference between the Exynos 990 and Snapdragon 865+ variants, even if you compare them side-by-side.

Even the most strenuous games and apps are designed to run well on mid-range platforms. So the performance advantage of flagship platforms is really more about future-proofing these days.

Arguably, the faster Snapdragon variant will let you hold onto the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra a little longer than the Exynos 990 variant. Maybe one cycle longer?

That’s why we are giving the Exynos 990 variant of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra our Reviewer’s Choice Award.

We would love to give the Snapdragon 865+ variant our Editor’s Choice Award, but sadly, it’s not available here in Malaysia… 🙁

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Series : Exynos 990 Performance!

Take a look at the work and gaming performance of the Exynos 990 version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series smartphones!

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Series : Powered By Exynos 990

Globally, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra smartphones are powered by the Samsung Exynos 990, the same mobile SoC used by the Samsung Galaxy S20 smartphones.

Faster Processor + GPU

Its custom Mongoose 5 (Exynos M5) cores are 20% faster than the Mongoose 4 (Exynos M4) cores used in the flagship-class Exynos 9825 that powered last year’s Galaxy Note 10 smartphones.

Its Arm Mali-G77 GPU uses the new Valhall architecture, which promises to offer a 20% boost in graphics performance or power efficiency.

Faster LPDDR5 Memory

The Exynos 990 is the first Samsung mobile platform to use the new LPDDR5 memory, which offers a 31% higher clock speed – increased from 2093 MHz to 2750 MHz.

This allows it to deliver up to 5,500 Mbps or 687.5 MB/s in memory bandwidth. It should also allow for lower power consumption.

Faster NPU + DSP

Its AI capabilities also received a big boost with a new dual-core NPU and improved digital signal processor (DSP) that can process over 10 trillion operations (TOPS) per second!

Samsung Exynos has historically been rather poor at work performance. But the Exynos 990 was significantly faster than the last-generation Exynos 9825 and Exynos 9820.

Thanks to the improved performance, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra was 17% faster than last year’s Galaxy Note10+ (Exynos 9825), and 25% faster than the Black Shark 2 Pro, which is powered by Snapdragon 855+.

However, the Snapdragon 865+ is 17% faster than the Exynos 990 in this test, losing out only in the Photo Editing test (by 15%).

Here is everything you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 smartphone!

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 : A Quick Primer!

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is the successor to the Galaxy Fold – the first Samsung foldable smartphone.

It naturally comes with a bevy of improvements, which should hopefully correct many of the criticisms of their first effort.

Larger Cover + Main Screens

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is about the same size as the Galaxy Fold, but comes with a slightly larger 7.6-inch Main Screen and much larger 6.2-inch Cover Screen.

The Main Screen looks much larger, because of the narrow bezels and the removal of the large notch. On top of that, it now adaptively changes its refresh rate from 11 Hz to 120 Hz.

Samsung Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) now protects the Main Screen, making it more durable and giving it a more refined feel (so they say!).

Hideaway Hinge + Sweeper Technology

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 utilises the Hideaway Hinge with a dual-cam design, first introduced in the Galaxy Z Flip. This enables its free standing capabilities, including its new Flex mode.

The Hideaway Hinge also features sweeper technology from the Galaxy Z Flip – protecting the hinge by repelling dust and dirt. It uses a third-generation design to deliver the same protection in a smaller space.

Finally, Samsung is letting you customise your Galaxy Z Fold 2 with four Hideaway Hinge colours – Metallic Silver, Metallic Gold, Metallic Red and Metallic Blue.

Flagship Cameras

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 comes with a bevy of cameras :

  • Cover Camera : 10 MP, f/2.2 aperture
  • Front Camera : 10 MP, f/2.2 aperture
  • Rear Camera (Main) : 12 MP Dual Pixel, f/1.8 aperture
  • Rear Camera (Ultra-Wide) : 12 MP, f/2.2
  • Rear Camera (Telephoto) : 12 MP, f/2.4

The main camera features a Bright Night sensor, which is 1.65X larger than that used in the Galaxy Z Flip, which allows for better low-light performance.

It also comes with the same flagship camera features introduced in the Galaxy Note 20 smartphones – Pro Video, Single Take, Bright Night and Night Mode.

Multitasking Galore

The large Main Screen allows for significant multitasking capabilities :

  • Multi-Active Window lets you open multiple files from the same app and view them side-by-side
  • Multi-Window Tray lets you open multiple apps at the same time, with drag and drop capabilities.
  • Split Screen Capture lets you capture the screen of one app, and transfer it into a different app.

Galaxy Z Premier Service

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 users will have access to Galaxy Z Premier Service, with on-demand concierge support from a dedicated team of product experts.

You can make appointments, to connect one-on-one with Samsung experts. On top of that, you will have one-time device protection against accidental display damage for one year.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 : Colour Options

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 will be available in two colour options – Mystic Black (left) and Mystic Bronze (right).

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 : Key Technologies Explained!

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 boasts a slew of improved technologies, including Ultra-Thin Glass and a new hideaway hinge with sweeper technology.

Join Samsung mobile experts who will help to explain the key technologies of the new Galaxy Z Fold2 foldable smartphone!

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 : A Quick Primer!

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 is the successor to the Galaxy Fold – the first Samsung foldable smartphone.

It naturally comes with a bevy of improvements, which should hopefully correct many of the criticisms of their first effort.

It is about the same size as the Galaxy Fold, but has a larger 7.6-inch Infinity Edge display, now protected by Ultra-Thin Glass; and a much larger 6.2-inch cover display.

Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+, it comes with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB / 512 GB of internal storage, as well as a slightly larger 4,500 mAh battery.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 : Key Technologies Explained!

Samsung arranged for their experts to help explain what’s new in the Galaxy Z Fold2 smartphone in these videos.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 Cameras + Flex Mode

The foldable design will give you greater flexibility in using the Galaxy Z Fold2’s cameras :

  • the Flex mode lets you take group selfies or long exposure photos without a tripod,
  • Capture View mode lets you preview what you are recording live,
  • Dual Preview lets you use both main display and cover display simultaneously, and
  • Rear Cam Selfie lets you use the rear camera for high-resolution selfies,

The new rear camera also comes with a Bright Night sensor, which is 1.65X larger, allowing for better low-light performance.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 Design

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 is about the same size as the Galaxy Fold, but has a larger 7.6-inch Infinity Edge display, thanks to smaller bezels.

On top of that, the team also removed the large display notch, replacing it with a tiny punch hole for the front camera.

Finally, the Mystic Bronze colour option comes with the haze finish – an advanced surface treatment, with a satin matte finish.

Users will be allowed to personalise their devices using customisable hideaway hinges, with five colour options – Metallic Red, Metallic Silver, Mystic Bronze, Metallic Gold and Metallic Blue.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 Hinge + Sweeper Mechanism

Unlike the Galaxy Fold, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 now uses a dual cam mechanism, which was first introduced in the Galaxy Z Flip.

It is also now built with a stronger retention force to maintain the 180 degree angle, and prevent the device from accidentally folding.

The built-in sweeper mechanism protects the dual cam hinge by repelling dirt and dust, while being sturdy and reliable enough to last more than 200,000 folds and unfolds.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 Multitasking Capabilities

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 also comes with improved software to support its larger, dual displays.

  • Multi-Window Tray and Edge Panel were integrated, letting you run an application in full screen / split / pop-up screens, as you prefer
  • The Multi-Active Screen capability lets you perform actions like drag and drop.
  • The Split Screen Capture lets you capture the screen of a window, instead of the entire display
  • New Pop-Up Window design minimises finger movements while using the large display.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Battery Life Comparison

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra comes with a large 4,500 mAh battery, but how long does it really last at 120 Hz, or at full display resolution?

We put the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra through the paces, and compared it to a few other devices in our lab. Check out the results!

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra : Battery Life Considerations

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra comes with a 4,500 mAh battery, which is just a little larger than the Galaxy Note 10+‘s 4,300 mAh battery.

On paper, this should give it a little more battery life than the Galaxy Note 10+. But the Note 20 Ultra is also the first Note to feature a 120 Hz display.

120 Hz Refresh Rate

A higher refresh rate will give you a smoother display, at the expense of higher power consumption and consequently, lower battery life.

That’s why Samsung doesn’t keep the display running at 120 Hz all the time. Instead, they offer an Adaptive option, doubling the refresh rate to 120 Hz only when it’s “necessary”.

WQHD+ Resolution

The other “trick” that Samsung uses to keep power consumption lower is to use a lower display resolution by default – FHD+ (1080 x 2316 pixels).

You can switch to the full WQHD+ resolution of 1440 x 3088 pixels, but that will increase power consumption and reduce battery life, because the GPU has to process more pixels.

Note : The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra only supports 120 Hz at the FHD+ or HD+ resolutions. Switching to WQHD+ limits you to just 60 Hz.

Let’s find out exactly how much both display options affect the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra‘s battery life!

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Battery Life Comparison

To test the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra‘s battery life, we turned off Automatic Brightness, and set its display brightness to 50%.

Why 50%? That is actually slightly higher than the average indoor brightness level of 40% during the day, and is what we usually use in all our mobile battery life tests.

It is important to fix the brightness level, to make sure the screen brightness does not change as the ambient brightness changes.

We then ran the PCMark Work 2.0 battery life test until its battery capacity dropped to 20% several times, and picked the best result.

Resolution + Refresh Rate Comparison

First, we started with a resolution and refresh rate comparison. The

Work 2.0 FHD+ (60 Hz) WQHD+ (60 Hz) FHD+ (120 Hz)
Battery Capacity 4,500 mAh 4,500 mAh 4,500 mAh
Battery Life 10 hrs 9 mins 9 hrs 17 mins 7 hrs 34 mins
Battery Utilisation 5.91 mAh / min. 6.46 mAh / min. 7.93 mAh / min.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has pretty good battery life of just over 10 hours, but only if you keep it at the default FHD+ resolution and use the standard 60 Hz refresh rate.

Increasing the display resolution to WQHD+ reduced battery life by 52 minutes, or about 8.5%. Not too bad, since you still get 9+ hours.

Switching to Adaptive mode though will drastically reduce battery life by a whopping 155 minutes, which is a full quarter less than its maximum battery life!

Snapdragon 865 Plus vs Exynos 990 Performance Compared!

Just how fast is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus compared to the Samsung Exynos 990?

Let’s find out in our very own performance comparison!

Snapdragon 865 Plus vs Exynos 990 : What’s The Deal?

When Samsung announced the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra smartphones, they were criticised for using the Exynos 990 in the global edition, instead of the Snapdragon 865 Plus.

Samsung only chose to use the Snapdragon 865 Plus for Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra smartphones sold in South Korea, China, Japan and the United States.

But just how much faster is the Snapdragon 865 Plus, compared to the Exynos 990? Let’s find out…

Snapdragon 865 Plus vs Exynos 990 : A Quick Primer

The Samsung Exynos 990 isn’t a particularly old platform, powering the Samsung Galaxy S20 smartphones. But it lagged behind the Snapdragon 865, which received a performance boost in the 865+ variant.

They are both 7 nm mobile SoCs that support LPDDR5 memory, and UFS 3.0 storage, but lack an integrated 5G modem.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus is essentially an overclocked variant, with its single Prime core clocked at 3.1 GHz (instead of 2.84 GHz), and a 10% faster Adreno 650 GPU.

It has three sustained performance Kryo 585 Gold (A77) cores at 2.4 GHz, and four low-power Kryo 585 Silver (A55) cores at 1.8 GHz.

The Samsung Exynos 990 has two high-speed Mongoose 5 cores, clocked at a more sedate 2.7 GHz, two sustained performance A76 cores at 2.5 GHz, and four low-power A55 cores at 2.0 GHz.

Snapdragon 865 Plus Exynos 990
Process 7 nm N7P 7 nm EUV

2 x Cortex-A76 (2.5 GHz)
4 x Cortex-A55 (2.0 GHz)

Storage Support UFS 3.0 UFS 3.0 / 2.1
5G Modem Snapdragon X55 (Separate)

Exynos 5123 (Separate)
– 7.35 Gbps

Now, we could not get our hands on an actual Galaxy Note 20 or Galaxy Note 20 Ultra powered by the Snapdragon 865+, so we used the next best thing – the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus!

Snapdragon 865 Plus vs Exynos 990 : TLDR Summary

For those who are too lazy to drill down into the results, here’s a quick and dirty summary.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus is definitely the superior platform. In most benchmarks, it was significantly faster than the Samsung Exynos 990.

  • PCMark : +19.4% faster
  • Sling Shot Extreme (OpenGL) : +4.8% faster
  • Sling Shot Extreme (Vulkan) : +12.8% faster
  • Sling Shot : +8.2% faster
  • Geekbench (Single Core) : +2.2% faster
  • AnTuTu : +10.5% faster

The Samsung Exynos 990 was only slightly faster in a single benchmark :

  • Geekbench (Multi Core) : +0.5% faster

That said, these are benchmark results. You are unlikely to actually notice the performance difference in real world usage, even in high-end games.

Samsung appears to acknowledge this performance difference, and compensate for it by giving Exynos models double the storage – 256 GB instead of 128 GB.

So if you have the option to choose between the Snapdragon and Exynos versions of the Galaxy Note 20 or Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, it’s really a choice between the faster Snapdragon 865+ platform, or the slower Exynos 990 with double the storage.

Snapdragon 865 Plus vs Exynos 990 : PCMark

The Snapdragon 865+ was faster than the Exynos 990 in these tests :

  • Data Manipulation : +42%
  • Web Browsing 2.0 : +37.4%
