Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 Performance Examined!

Take a look at the performance of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4, and find out why it is a foldable computing + gaming powerhouse!

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 : Flagship Class Performance!

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 runs on the most powerful mobile SoC available for Android devices – the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.

Fabricated on the latest 4nm Samsung process technology, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 boasts a powerful Adreno 730 GPU as well as eight processor cores in a triple-tier architecture :

  • a Cortex-X2 prime core running at up to 3.2 GHz,
  • three sustained-performance Cortex-A710 cores running at up to 2.5 GHz, and
  • four energy-efficient Cortex-A510 cores running at 1.8 GHz.

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is a higher-binned version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC that powers the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Its Cortex-X2 prime core runs at 3.2 GHz, instead of 3 GHz, while its Adreno 730 GPU runs at 800 MHz, instead of 720 MHz.

On paper, this is about as powerful as it gets in 2022, but let’s take a look at how it actually performs!

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 : Work Performance

We first tested the Galaxy Z Flip4 using PCMark, which simulates work applications like web browsing, playing video, writing text and editing photos.

Unsurprisingly, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is about 8% faster than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 used in the Galaxy S22 Ultra, and the Snapdragon 888 used by the Galaxy Z Flip 3.

It’s a nice boost, but you won’t actually notice the difference. For certain, it will easily handle anything you throw at it, whether it’s just posting your latest Instagram pictures or editing a 4K video.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 : Gaming Performance

For gaming, we tested the Galaxy Z Flip4 using 3DMark, with these results :

When it comes to less strenuous games (Sling Shot), the higher-clocked Adreno 730 GPU had no effect, but when we switched to Wild Life, we saw a 19% to 22% boost in performance.

For certain, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will crush any game you throw at it, but the Galaxy Z Flip4’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 gives you more performance headroom.

It also shows that you don’t really need expensive “gaming smartphones”. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 will easily handle any game you want to play.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 : Overall Performance

We then tested the Galaxy Z Flip4 using AnTuTu, yielding these results :

UX 137458 152042 114380 78321 71371

The AnTuTu benchmark tells a slightly different story. The higher-clocked Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 pretty much performs as fast as the standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 – with a slight 3.7% performance difference.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 is about 23% faster than the Galaxy Z Flip 3, and a whopping 37% faster than  the Galaxy S21 Ultra!

But note that its temperature jumped by over 10°C! At peak performance, the Galaxy Z Flip4 can get quite toasty!

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 : Performance Summary

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 is a svelte smartphone when unfolded, and yet super compact when folded. You would not expect performance to be a key selling point.

In fact, I expect Samsung to tune down the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 for better battery life. But somehow, Samsung kept its performance high, while improving its battery life in the Z Flip4!

In other words – you can have your cake and eat it too. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 is not just a fashion statement in your hands, it’s a computing and gaming powerhouse in a compact form factor.

It is no surprise why the Galaxy Z Flip4 is arguably the hottest smartphone Samsung introduced in 2022!

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra : Battery Life + Recharging Speed!

Take a look at the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra’s battery recharging speed, and how its two refresh rate options affect its battery life!

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra : Refresh Rate Affects Battery Life!

The new Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra offers two refresh rate options (Settings > Display > Motion smoothness) :

  • Adaptive : Get smoother animation and scrolling by automatically adjusting your screen refresh rate up to 120 Hz
  • Standard : Get longer battery life with a 60 Hz screen refresh rate

Last year’s Galaxy S21 Ultra also has an Adaptive mode, which dynamically refreshes between 10 Hz and 120 Hz

The new Galaxy S22 Ultra improves on that, with an Adaptive mode that dynamically refreshes between 1 Hz and 120 Hz.

By default, the Galaxy S22 Ultra uses the Adaptive mode, for smoother graphics, but you can choose to switch to the Standard mode for longer battery.

In the next section, we will look at how the two refresh rate options affect the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s battery life.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra : Battery Life Comparison!

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra comes with a larger 5,000 mAh battery, which is the same size as last year’s Galaxy S21 Ultra.

To test its battery life, we turned off Automatic Brightness, and set its display brightness to 50%.

Why 50%? That is actually slightly higher than the average indoor brightness level of 40% during the day, and is what we usually use in all our mobile battery life tests.

It is important to fix the brightness level, to make sure the screen brightness does not change as the ambient brightness changes.

We then ran the PCMark Work 3.0 battery life test until its battery capacity dropped to 20% several times, and this was the best result we obtained with 60 Hz and 120 Hz refresh rates :

Will you look at that!

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has a battery life of 10.5 hours with Adaptive refresh rate enabled, and a whopping 14.25 hours with the Standard refresh rate!

But let’s compare its battery life at 60 Hz and 120 Hz, against the S21 Ultra and Z Flip 3 smartphones.

Standard Refresh Rate (60 Hz)

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra really shines with the refresh rate set to 60 Hz.

The S22 Ultra used 20% less power per minute, which delivered 25% longer battery life than the S21 Ultra.

Adaptive Refresh Rate (120 Hz)

While the Galaxy S22 Ultra certainly used less power than the S21 Ultra, that advantage was greatly diminished with the Adaptive refresh rate enabled.

The S22 Ultra used just 2% less power per minute, which delivered 2% (12 minutes) longer battery life than the S21 Ultra.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra : Battery Recharging Speed!

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra supports up to 45 watts of wired fast charging, but unfortunately, does not come with the charger in-the-box.

So we relied on the standard 15 watt Samsung fast charger than shipped with their previous smartphones – something we believe most users will end up doing.

But we used the 25 watt charger for the S21 Ultra, because it came with that charger.

Work 3.0 S21 Ultra S22 Ultra Z Flip 3
Battery Capacity 5,000 mAh 5,000 mAh 3,300 mAh

Battery Life 64 minutes 64.5 minutes 88.5 minutes
Recharging Speed
(per minute)
62.5 mAh 62.0 mAh 29.8 mAh

Interestingly, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra recharged as quickly with a standard 15 watt charger, as the S21 Ultra with its more powerful 25 watt charger!

In fact, the Galaxy S22 Ultra recharged itself twice as fast as the Galaxy Z Flip 3, even though they both used the same 15 watt charger!

This is really good news. It means that Galaxy S22 Ultra owners need not worry too much about its recharging speed with the older 15 watt chargers.

In fact, you don’t really need to splurge on a new 45 watt fast charger. The Galaxy S22 Ultra fully recharges from 20% to 100% in just over an hour with the standard 15 watt Samsung charger!

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra : Price + Availability

Samsung is offering the Galaxy S22 Ultra in four colour options – Burgundy, Green, Phantom Black and Phantom White.

I had the opportunity to attend an exclusive Samsung preview event, to check out all four colours for ourselves.

Note : Samsung only allowed us to use digital cameras, so the video is not stabilised as it would be with smartphones that I generally use.

Here in Malaysia, it is available starting 10 February 2022 in three variants, at these price points :

  • 8 GB + 128 GB : RM 5,099 (about US$1,219 / £899 / A$1,699 / S$1,629)
  • 12 GB + 256 GB : RM 5,499 (about US$1,314 / £969 / A$1,829 / S$1,759)
  • 12 GB + 512 GB : RM 5,899 (about US$1,409 / £1,039 / A$1,959 / S$1,889)

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Camera In Professional Hands?

Samsung brought in Rankin and Stefflon Don to showcase the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s camera capabilities.

Take a look at their behind-the-scenes video, and the shots Rankin took with the Galaxy S21 Ultra!

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Camera In Professional Hands?

We have always focused on what ordinary folks like us can do with smartphone cameras, but what if you put one in the hands of a professional photographer?

Samsung wanted to showcase the maximum creative possibility of the Galaxy S21 Ultra, so they brought in fashion photographer, Rankin to show us noobs what its camera can really do.

In this video, Rankin and rapper Stefflon Don, put the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra camera to the test!

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Camera Professional Photo Samples

As the BTS video shows, photography is all about the photographer and less about the camera, and a great picture involves a fair bit of work.

But it is nevertheless very impressive to see the image quality the Samsung Galaxy S21 delivers.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Camera : Quick Recap

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra comes with an improved quad-camera system, that consists of :

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra : Dual Zoom + Audio Zoom Review

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra boasts a new Dual Zoom capability, as well as Audio Zoom, for improved video recording.

Take a look at our 1080p and 4K video samples, and find out how well they really work in real life!

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra : Dual Zoom + Audio Zoom

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra comes with an improved quad-camera system, that consists of :

  • a 108 MP main camera, with an f/1.8 aperture
  • a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, with an f/2.2 aperture
  • a 10 MP telephoto camera, with an f/2.4 aperture, and 3X optical zoom, and
  • a 10 MP periscope telephoto camera, with an f/4.9 aperture, and 10X optical zoom

For the first time, it has two 10 MP telephoto cameras – one with 3X optical zoom, and a periscope camera with 10X optical zoom.

The Dual Zoom capability refers to the ability to smoothly switch from the 3X telephoto camera, to the 10X periscope camera, with AI-enhanced Super Resolution to deliver sharper, stabilised video.

Its Audio Zoom capability isn’t new, having been first introduced in the Galaxy S10 series. It uses the triple microphones to change the range of sound captured as you “zoom” into the action. This lets you “focus” on the subject that you are recording, and reducing ambient noise.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra also comes with other improvements like :

  • Improved 8K Snap, that lets you capture clear images from your 8K video footage
  • Super Steady video now supports 60 fps video recording
  • Single Take lets you capture a variety of still and video formats with a single tap.
It is now enhanced with new pro-style settings like Highlight Video and Dynamic Slow-Mo
  • New Director’s View that lets you see, switch and select the best shot… LIVE!

The Galaxy S21 Ultra is also the first Samsung smartphone to allow you to shoot in 4K at 60 fps on all front and rear cameras!

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra : Dual Zoom + Audio Zoom Examined!

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra can zoom at up to 20X while recording 1080p video at up to 60 fps, and 4K video at up to 30 fps.

So we recorded a series of handheld video clips in both 1080p at 60 fps, and 4K at 30 fps, to test its Dual Zoom and Audio Zoom capabilities.

By default, the Samsung Camera app offers zoom presets of 0.6X, 1.0X, 3.0X and 10X.

You can use pinch-to-zoom further, or you can do a long press on any of the presets to get access to a wider range of zoom presets – 0.6X, 1.0X, 2.0X, 4.0X, 10X and 20X.

Dual Zoom + Audio Zoom @ 1080p (60 fps)

At 1080p, handheld image stabilisation was very good, except at 20X zoom where you can see some visible handshake.

That said, the handshake at 20X is really quite minimal, compared to older stabilised cameras and even worse, unstabilised cameras!

The best test of Audio Zoom can be heard in the Chinese New Year concourse clip. Notice how the music from the concourse gets louder as we zoom in, and fade out as we zoom out.

Dual Zoom + Audio Zoom @ 4K (30 fps)

At 4K, handheld image stabilisation was very good at up to 4X, and pretty good at 10X. At 20X zoom, there was visible handshake, but it was really quite acceptable.

Of course, for best image quality, you should stick to 10X zoom. 20X at 4K looks a little blur, so the extra resolution at 4K doesn’t help at all.

Another good example of Audio Zoom is at the playground. Even though it’s empty, the bird chirps get louder as we zoom in, and fade out as we zoom out.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra : Dual Zoom + Audio Zoom Verdict!

Dual Zoom is just a fancy name for the ability to switch between the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s two telephoto lenses.

Naturally, you want to use the 3X telephoto camera with its much wider aperture, and only switch to the 10X periscope lens with its narrower aperture when you need the extra reach.

Its AI-enhanced Super Resolution feature enhances image quality in the zoom gap between 3X optical zoom and 10X optical zoom.

While most people are not aware of Audio Zoom, it can greatly enhance the overall audio quality of the video, by focusing on subject in focus.

Thanks to these two features, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra arguably delivers the best video recording capabilities for a smartphone today.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra : Where To Buy?

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra comes in three variants globally, with these prices :

  • 12 GB + 128 GB : US$1199.99 / £1149 / A$1849
  • 12 GB + 256 GB : US$1249.99 / £1199 / A$1949 / S$1798 / RM5299
  • 16 GB + 512 GB : US$1379.99 / £1329 / A$2149 / S$1998 / RM5899

Samsung Galaxy SmartTag : Hands-On Preview!

Together with the Galaxy S21 smartphones, Samsung also introduced their Galaxy SmartTag Bluetooth tracker!

Take a look at the new Samsung Galaxy SmartTag, and find out what exactly it does!

Samsung Galaxy SmartTag : Hands-On Preview!

Samsung Galaxy SmartTag is a Bluetooth tracker, which you can attach to keys, bags, or anything important you want to keep track of.

It emits a Bluetooth Low Energy signal, which lets your Galaxy devices locate the tracker, and thus the attached item.

Just tap the Ring button in the Samsung SmartThings app, and the SmartTag will emit a piercing tone, at up to 89 dB.

You can also find your Samsung Galaxy smartphone using the SmartTag. Press its button twice, and your smartphone will ring!

In case its tone is too soft or muffled, the SmartThings app will give you its signal strength, letting you pretend that you are tracking Aliens, albeit without direction.

And even if it’s out of range, nearby Galaxy devices will pick up its signal and transmit it to you through the Galaxy Find Network.

It can also act as a remote control for IoT routines. You can program its button to trigger different IoT devices like turning on the smart lights and the thermostat in your home.

However, the Galaxy SmartTag only works with Samsung Galaxy devices. So you can forget about using it with non-Samsung devices, or an iPhone.

The SmartTag is powered by a single CR2032 battery, and is IP53-rated, which means it is not waterproof but can withstand water splashes (like raindrops).

Samsung Galaxy SmartTag+ : UWB Coming Soon!

While there were rumours that it would support UWB (Ultra Wideband), that capability will only be introduced in a future Galaxy SmartTag+ tracker.

The UWB capability of SmartTag+ will allow you to see on a map the direction of the tracker, making it easier to locate than the Bluetooth version.

But it will only work with the Galaxy S21 Ultra, Galaxy S21+ and Galaxy Note20 Ultra, which support UWB.

Samsung Galaxy SmartTag : Price + Availability

The Samsung Galaxy SmartTag is available in two colour options – Black and Oatmeal.

It has an official price of US$29.99 / £29 / RM119, but here in Malaysia, it’s available at a discounted launch price of RM79.

Here are some online purchase options :

Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, Galaxy S21 Ultra Compared!

In this article, we compared the differences between the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+ and Galaxy S21 Ultra, so you can decide which is the best model for you!

Samsung Galaxy S21, S21+, S21 Ultra Compared!

With a 6.2-inch display, the Samsung Galaxy S21 is designed for those who want a light, compact flagship smartphone.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus, on the other hand, has a larger 6.7-inch display and a larger battery – great for marathon gamers and binge-watchers.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy S21 Ultra offers the ultimate productivity and creativity possibilities with its 6.8-inch display and support for the S Pen.

All three Galaxy S21 models are powered by the same mobile SoC – the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 in the US, South Korea and China, and the Samsung Exynos 2100 in all other countries.

All three models feature Samsung’s Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel, with a dynamic 120 Hz refresh rate. However, while the S21 and S21+ can only go down to 48 Hz, while the S21 Ultra can go as low as 10 Hz.

They are all protected by Gorilla Glass Victus in the front, with IP68 dust and water-resistance; and come with 18 watt wireless charging and 25 watt wired charging capability.

While the Galaxy S21+ appears to be a larger variant of the Galaxy S21 with a larger battery, the Galaxy S21 Ultra comes with more memory and a completely different camera system.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is also the only model to support the S Pen stylus.

If Ultra-wideband support is important, you should note that it is only supported by Galaxy S21+ and Galaxy S21 Ultra.

Samsung Exynos 2100 : What You Need To Know!

Samsung just unveiled their Exynos 2100 – the 5G mobile platform which will debut in their new Galaxy S21 smartphones!

Here is what you need to know about the new Samsung Exynos 2100 mobile SoC!

Samsung Exynos 2100 : Official Presentation

Let’s start with the official Samsung Exynos 2100 presentation.

This presentation broadcast globally as part of the Exynos On 2021 event, just one day before Samsung unveils the Galaxy S21 smartphones.

Samsung Exynos 2100 : What You Need To Know!

The Exynos 2100 is Samsung’s first 5G-integrated flagship mobile platform, fabricated on the latest 5 nm EUV (Extreme Ultra-Violet) process node.

The finer 5 nm process lets it deliver up to 20% lower power consumption, or 10% better performance, than its older 7 nm predecessor.

New Tri-Cluster CPU Architecture

The Samsung Exynos 2100 uses a new tri-cluster CPU architecture, featuring :

  • a new powerful Arm Cortex-X1 core running at up to 2.9 GHz,
  • three sustained performance Arm Cortex-A78 cores running at up to 2.8 GHz, and
  • four power-efficient Arm Cortex-A55 cores running at up to 2.2 GHz

Faster Graphics

The Samsung Exynos 2100 comes with the Arm Mali-G78 GPU, which delivers 40% better performance for gaming, and AR/VR or MR (mixed reality).

Faster AI

It also comes with a new triple-core NPU, which can process up to 26 trillion operations per second (TOPS), with twice the power efficiency of the previous generation.

Faster Memory

The Exynos 2100 supports LPDDR5 memory, with a peak memory speed of 51.2 GB/s.

In addition, Samsung says it has an improved cache and a stronger scheduler for better memory performance and utilisation.

Advanced Image Signal Processor

Its advanced image signal processor (ISP) supports camera resolutions of up to 200 megapixels (MP), and can connect up to six individual sensors.

With a multi-camera and frame processor (MCFP), this ISP can combine feeds from up to four cameras to :

  • improve zoom performance
  • enhance image quality for ultra-wide shots
  • reduce hand shake

With AI acceleration, the ISP can also recognise scenes, faces and objects, automatically adjusting the camera settings for optimal image quality and detail.

Integrated 5G Multi-Mode Modem

The Exynos 2100 has an integrated 5G multi-mode modem that supports :

  • 5G : Sub-6 GHz and millimetre wave spectrums
  • 4G LTE with 1024 QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) support
  • 3G WCDMA
  • 2G GSM / CDMA

This modem can download data at up to 5.1 Gbps (sub-6GHz), and 7.35 Gbps (mmWave) with 5G networks; and up to 3 Gbps in 4G networks with 1024 QAM.
