Samsung just introduced a major mid-life upgrade for Galaxy S10, S10e and S10+ smartphones, with many features from the Galaxy Note10 and Galaxy Note10+!

Here is a guide on what new features Samsung has just introduced into the Galaxy S10, S10e and S10+ smartphones!

Samsung Galaxy S10, S10e, S10+ Get Major Note10 Upgrade!

When the Galaxy Note10 and Galaxy Note10+ launched, it came with a bevy of new software features. That made existing Galaxy S10, S10e and S10+ users wonder if they would ever receive those software features.

Wonder no longer, because Samsung is injecting a whole slew of those new software features into your Galaxy S10, S10e and S10+ smartphones!

Let’s take a look at what new features you will soon enjoy!

Better Camera Features!

Four new camera features have been added :

  • enhanced Super Steady video stabilisation
  • the selfie camera will now have Night Mode capability for better selfies in the dark
  • AR Doodle to let you create augmented reality drawings and messages
  • Live Focus Video recording capability that lets you apply bokeh effects to your videos from both front and rear cameras

Enhanced Samsung DeX Computing Experience!

The update also includes Samsung DeX for PC, which allows you to connect your Galaxy S10, S10e or S10+ smartphone to your PC or Mac using a USB cable.

The enhanced Samsung DeX will also allow you to easier edit and transform your video clips using the built-in Samsung Video Editor!

They also added Link to Windows support, letting you wirelessly connect your devices to your Windows 10 PC, to view its contents, send and receive messages and sync your photos!

Improved Gallery

This major update also includes an improved Gallery that now allows you to search for and locate your favourite photos quickly using keywords.

Media & Devices In Quick Panel

A more subtle improvement is the addition of Media & Devices to the Quick Panel. It allows you to more easily connect to and control other devices using your Galaxy S10, S10e or S10+ smartphone.

Auto Hotspot Capability

There is a new Auto Hotspot capability that will transform your Galaxy S10, S10e or S10+ smartphone into a Wi-Fi hub.

After an initial setup, it lets your smartphone establish a hotspot automatically with other Samsung devices, if they share the same Samsung account, or family account.

Your Wi-Fi capability will also be improved somewhat by new Intelligent Wi-Fi Tips that offer troubleshooting guides and alerts to help ensure you have the best possible Wi-Fi connection.

Samsung Galaxy S10, S10e, S10+ Upgrade Availability

Samsung started introducing the Galaxy S10, S10e or S10+ mid-life upgrade in European markets beginning from 23 September 2019.

They will gradually introduce it worldwide, in various regions and countries.

The Samsung IP68 Water-Resistance Technology Guide!

Ever since Samsung unveiled the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge smartphone, their flagship S and Note smartphones have all been IP68-certified to be dust- and water-resistant.

Let’s take a look at the engineering behind the Samsung’s IP68 rating, and clarify its limitations, so you can enjoy your Samsung smartphones for many years to come!

Samsung IP68 Engineering

The challenge with making smartphones water-resistant isn’t just ensuring that water won’t get inside. Before the Galaxy S7 edge, a number of devices already did that, like Samsung’s own Galaxy S6 Active smartphone or the Kenxinda Flattop ruggerdised smartphones.

What Samsung introduced in their flagship smartphones from the Galaxy S7 edge onwards was IP68 dust- and water-resistance without prior preparation.

Unlike prior water-resistant smartphones, you don’t need to prepare it in any way before you dunk it into water. There is no need to cap the earphone and USB ports. It is dust- and water-resistant 24/7.

To achieve this feat, Samsung introduced a number of engineering improvements :

  • An unspecified “new type of water resistance technology” was used to seal the unit internally against the ingress of water,
  • An “exclusive type of water protective tape” was added to the back of the front and rear glass, as well as other internal parts,
  • Rubber linings were used on parts like the USB port, the earphone port, and the SIM card tray to prevent the ingress of water

  • Anti-corrosive materials like nickel and platinum and corrosive-resistant coating were used for all external metal parts and connectors like the earphone and USB ports,
  • The USB port has a short circuit sensor to cut-off power when it detects a short circuit due to water contact
  • Portable electronic vents were used to ensure a good flow of air and outflow of water and humidity

As you can see, a lot of engineering went into ensuring that Samsung smartphones are dust- and water-resistant, while remaining ultra-slim.

Teardowns by iFixit also showed considerable use of adhesive in subsequent models, all the way to the latest Samsung Galaxy Note 10+, to maintain this IP68-rated dust and water-resistance.

Is The Samsung S Pen IP68 Rated Too?

The S Pen of IP68-rated Galaxy Note devices are also IP68-rated against dust and water. However, the S Pen requires slightly different techniques to achieve such water-resistance :

  • its printed circuit board (PCB) is covered with a special epoxy material
  • rubber seals are used to seal off vulnerable passageways
  • important components like the pen pressure switch are also covered by rubber seals

This allows the pen tip to move as needed, while preventing the ingress of water that will damage the internal components of the S Pen.

[adrotate group=”1″]

Samsung IP68 Rating Clarified

All Samsung smartphones that are IP68-rated can withstand complete immersion in water up to 1.5 m in depth, for up to 30 minutes.

This means you can take it for jogs in the rain, or reading in the bathtub. However, we must point out that IP68 is a rating for water immersion.

IP68-rated devices are NOT designed to withstand water pressure. We therefore do not recommend you take it into the shower or while you swim.

The IP68 certification is based on a specific set of test conditions :

Temperature Range : 15-35 °C
Pressure Range : 86-106 kPa
Maximum Water Depth : 1.5 metre
Maximum Time of Immersion : 30 minutes

If you exceed those conditions, Samsung’s IP68 measures may not prevent the ingress of water.

In fact, if you check your User Guide, you will see that Samsung warns against exposing their IP68 smartphones to “water moving with force“.

This means you should not place them under running water from a tap or a waterfall. Even ocean waves may exert enough force to drive water into their chassis.

Summary : IP68 = Water-Resistance, NOT Waterproofing

The takeaway message is this – Samsung IP68 smartphones are water-resistant, not waterproof. You need to be gentle with them when they are exposed to water.

The biggest problem is water pressure, not depth. You can leave it at the bottom of a swimming pool without worry, but the force of water from a tap can exceed the IP68 pressure rating.

Do NOT do this!!! Never pour water on your device, because it exerts pressure!

Let’s consider a real-world scenario – taking photos and videos while snorkelling.

You won’t reach a depth of 1.5 m when you snorkel. But swinging your device underwater could literally force water into the chassis!

That doesn’t mean you cannot use your device underwater. You can, but you must make sure not to exert too much force. Take it in and out of the water gently, and if you have to move, do so gently.

Samsung Galaxy S10e (SM-G970) Models

Samsung announced two variants of the SM-G970 :

  • a base model with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage
  • a higher-end model with 6 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage

The 256 GB model though appears to be limited to the United States and Canada.

Samsung Galaxy S10e Colour Options

The Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) is available in six colour options, although not all colours will be available in all countries.

  • Prism White
  • Prism Black
  • Prism Green
  • Prism Blue
  • Flamingo Pink
  • Canary Yellow

Here in Malaysia, they are only available in three colours – Prism White, Prism Black and Prism Green.

Samsung Galaxy S10e (SM-G970) Up Close!

Before its availability on 8 March 2019, Samsung arranged an exclusive hands-on session. Here is our hands-on video of the Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) smartphone!

On the left side, you will find the Volume control buttons, as well as the dedicated Bixby button.

The Power button, which doubles as a fingerprint sensor, is located on the right side. Samsung repositioned it higher in the new Galaxy S10 smartphones, ostensibly to avoid accidental presses.

The hybrid SIM tray is located at the top, together with a second microphone port (for noise cancellation).

Thankfully, Samsung retained the 3.5 mm audio port while they kept the S10e at just under 8 mm.

Everything else is the same as the Galaxy S9 – a USB Type C port, a microphone port and an AKG-tuned speaker at the bottom.

New Flagship Exynos / Snapdragon Platforms

The Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) runs on either the new Samsung Exynos 9820 (worldwide), or the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 (United States) platforms.

The Samsung Exynos 9820 has a triple-cluster architecture with a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) (like the Kirin 980). Samsung says that it will deliver these performance advantages over the Exynos 9810 :

  • 20% better single core performance,
  • 15% better multi-core performance, and
  • 40% better power efficiency
  • 7X faster AI performance

Built on the 8 nm LPP FinFET process technology, it also boasts 10% lower power consumption, compared to the last generation 10 nm LPP process.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, on the other hand, is fabricated on the 7 nm process technology., which should deliver similar power savings.

It also uses a triple-cluster CPU architecture, and comes with an Adreno 640 GPU and an X24 LTE modem that supports Cat20 download and uploads.

Galaxy S10e Memory + Storage

The Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) comes with 6 GB of LPDDR4x memory, and either 128 GB or 256 GB of internal flash storage.

And if that’s not enough, it has a hybrid SIM slot, where the second SIM slot can support a microSD card of up to 512 GB in capacity.

A hybrid SIM tray is generally good enough for most people. But if you need to use two SIM cards, you better opt for higher internal storage, because there is no way to add a microSD card.

Infinity-O Display

The Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) features a large 5.8-inch display with Gorilla Glass 5 protection.

Unlike the Samsung Galaxy S10+ (US | UK | MY) and the Galaxy S10 (US | UK | MY), it has a flat display, without curved edges. It also has a lower display resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels with 433 ppi pixel density.

The display uses the new Infinity-O design, with a round hole for the front camera. This allows Samsung to deliver a screen-to-body ratio in excess of 90%.

Functionally, it works like a right-sided notch, with the area adjacent to the notch reserved for notifications.

Ignoring the notification area, the main display area has a WQHD+ resolution of 1440 x 2960. However, the Galaxy S10 defaults to a Full HD+ resolution to reduce power consumption and extend battery life.

[adrotate group=”1″]

Dynamic AMOLED Panel

The Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) uses the next-generation Dynamic AMOLED panel that is HDR10+ certified.

This is literally the best smartphone display in the industry right now, capable of producing 100% of the DCI-P3 colour range, with a maximum brightness of 1200 nits.

This Dynamic AMOLED panel was also engineered to reduce blue light by 42% without changing how colours appear. This would make for more comfortable viewing with less eyestrain, especially at night.

Gorilla Glass 5 Protection

The Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) is protected by Gorilla Glass 5 in the front and back.

While not as tough as Gorilla Glass 6 used in the S10 and S10+ models, it will protect the S10e from 1.6-meter high drops on hard, rough surfaces about 80% of the time.

Samsung Galaxy S10e Cameras

The Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) boasts a new front camera that pairs a 10 MP Dual Pixel sensor with a wide, bright f/1.9 aperture and a 80° viewing angle.

Dual Pixel is an autofocus technology that uses the dual photodiodes in every pixel on the image sensor for phase-detection autofocus.

This allows for faster and more accurate focusing, because it uses many more autofocus pixels, instead of just a few dedicated pixels (usually less than 5% of the total).

However, it lacks the 8 MP depth sensor of the Samsung Galaxy S10+ (US | UK | MY), which allows for accurate software bokeh effects and Live Focus capability.

In the back, the Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) comes with a dual camera system, which consists of :

  • a 12 MP dual-aperture camera (f/1.5 and f/2.4) – 77°, Dual Pixel, OIS
  • a 16 MP ultra wide-angle camera (f/2.2) – 123°, 0.5X optical zoom

Unlike the dual camera system of the Galaxy S9+ and the Galaxy Note9, it swapped out the 12 MP telephoto camera for a 16 MP ultra-wide camera with f/2.2 lens. It is also supported by a single LED flash.

Look at how useful the new ultra-wide camera is for your creative composition :

The ultra-wide camera is certainly very useful for architectural shots. However, it does NOT support optical image stabilisation.

This is important when you take videos, because you will lose optical image stabilisation if you switch to the ultra-wide camera. Your video will still be stabilised by electronic image stabilisation though.

[adrotate group=”1″]

HDR10+ Video Recording

The Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) not only comes with a HDR10+ certified display, it also has the ability to record HDR10+ videos!

HDR10+ is an improved version of the HDR10 standard. It maintains the 10-bit colour depth of HDR10, but replaces its static metadata with dynamic metadata. This improves the dynamic range by allowing the brightness boundaries to be adjusted on a frame-by-frame basis.

However, please note that HDR10+ videos recorded on the Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) will only display properly on devices and TVs that support HDR10+, like the 2018 Samsung QLED TV range.

Samsung says that you can convert HDR10+ videos into non-HDR videos using its Gallery app. However, the functionality does not appear to be included in current version of their Gallery app. Enabling HDR10+ video recording also disables the more-efficient HEVC format.

Later in the review, we will show you what happens when you try to display or view HDR10+ videos on a platform or display that does NOT support HDR10+.

Improved Super Slow-mo

The Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) supports an improved version of Super Slow-mo, in which the recording time was doubled from 0.2-0.4 seconds to 0.4-0.8 seconds. Unfortunately, the video resolution is still limited to 720p at 960 fps.

The Super Slow-mo videos can be instantly edited, with a random selection from preloaded choices. Or you can use your own music / songs. You can also create a GIF from the recorded video, with three style of looping – reverse, forward or swing.

Samsung Galaxy S10e Side Fingerprint Sensor

Unlike the Samsung Galaxy S10+ (US | UK | MY) or the Galaxy S10 (US | UK | MY), the Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) lacks an in-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.

Instead, it uses a side touch sensor integrated into the power button – a feature first introduced in the Samsung Galaxy A7 2018 (MY | US | UK).

The side fingerprint sensor has the advantage of being accessible even when the Galaxy S10e is attached to a car mount. The higher position of the sensor will also help in preventing accidental activation.

Like the Galaxy S10+ and the Galaxy S10, it uses a virtual Home button. However, there is no longer a pressure sensor, so you will need to tap twice on the Home button to activate it.

Iris Scanner + Intelligent Scan Removed

With the introduction of the ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner, Samsung removed the iris scanner. It was also removed to minimise the size of the punch hole in the display.

And with the iris scanner gone, there was no need for Intelligent Scan, which was first introduced in the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus. Intelligent Scan, as you may recall, combines the iris scanner with facial recognition for faster identification in both bright and dark conditions.

Built-In DeX Capability

While not mentioned at all by Samsung, the Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) has built-in DeX capability, that was first introduced in the Galaxy Note9.

This mean it does not require a separate DeX Station or DeX Pad accessory. All it requires is a simple USB-C to HDMI adaptor or cable! It does not even require a Samsung-branded adaptor (looking at you and your MFi bullshit, Apple!) – ANY USB-C to HDMI adaptor or cable will do.

After you use the USB-C to HDMI adaptor or cable to connect the Galaxy S10 to a TV or monitor, you just need to link a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse to use it like a PC. Best of all – you can continue to use your Galaxy S10 Plus while Samsung DeX is running!

Samsung Galaxy S10e Battery + Charging

The Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) comes with a 3,100 mAh battery, which is slightly more than the Galaxy S9. It supports QuickCharge 2.0 fast wired charging and Wireless PowerShare capabilities.

The Wireless PowerShare feature is particularly cool and useful. It allows the Galaxy S10 Plus to function as a wireless charger for any Qi-certified device!

However, its recharging speed is slow, so it’s really only useful to recharge the Galaxy Buds or the Galaxy Watch on a regular basis; and other smartphones in an emergency.

IP68 Dust & Water Resistance

Like the Galaxy S9 Plus, the Samsung Galaxy S10e is IP68-rated for dust- and water-resistance. Best of all, you don’t have to prepare it in any way before you dunk it into water!

Officially, the Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) can withstand complete immersion in water up to 1.5 m in depth, for up to 30 minutes. That means you can take it for jogs in the rain, or reading in the bathtub. Heck, you can even take it for a swim!

There are some caveats though. The IP68 rating applies to a specific set of test conditions : 15-35 °C, 86-106 kPa, 1.5 metre, 30 minutes. Water may enter and damage the Galaxy Note9 if it is exposed to “water moving with force“, like running water from a tap or waterfall, or ocean waves.

In other words, this is not a waterproof phone like the Oukitel K10000 Pro or the Kenxinda ruggerdised smartphones. It is IP68 water-resistant, so you need to be gentle with it.

You can read more about this in our article – The Samsung IP68 Engineering Explained.

The Ergonomics

The Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) has the same display size as, and a slightly larger battery capacity than, the Galaxy S9, but is significantly smaller, thinner and lighter!

It’s small enough that you can use it with one hand most of the time. And it fits real well in smaller pockets.

Its Dynamic AMOLED display is incredible. To see how much better it is, you need to compare it side-by-side with the already impressive Super AMOLED display used in the Galaxy S9 Plus and the Galaxy Note9. In particular, compare them in bright sunlight.

The main display area with its non-standard 18.5:9 display ratio means you will have to live with some pillarboxing – a black bar on each side of a movie. The extra wide display will come in handy in games though.

Available Memory + Storage

The Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) comes with 6 GB of LPDDR4x memory. It has roughly more bloat than the Galaxy Note9.

However, it comes with 2 GB more memory, so you still have 3.1 GB (52%) of free memory to use!

The base model also comes with 128 GB of internal flash memory, of which 108 GB is free to use. This is enough space to store about 24,000 photos, or 13 hours of 1080p videos, or 5 hours of 4K videos.

Samsung Galaxy S10e Camera Performance – Photo Samples

Samsung brought over the excellent 12 MP dual-aperture camera from the Galaxy S9 Plus, and the Galaxy Note9.

Powered by the superb 12 MP Samsung ISOCELL Fast SAK2L3 sensor, it is capable of automatically or manually switching between the f/1.5 aperture, and the f/2.4 aperture.

The maximum 12 MP resolution is attained with the 4:3 aspect ratio, with 4032 x 3024 pixels, and a file size of between 3 MB and 5 MB.

Here are 12 high-resolution unedited samples for you to check out. Click on them to load the full-sized photos, which you can also download to examine.

There is no doubt that this is still one of the best smartphone cameras in the market, even though it was introduced a year ago.

You can see the intricate detail of the broccoli florets, the flower pollen, and mushrooms even without zooming in!

[adrotate group=”2″]

It also did a great job of bringing out the colour of the subject matter. Every colour is accurately rendered and automatically “amped up” by AI algorithms. If you do not like the increased vividness though, you can turn off the Scene Optimiser feature.

The f/1.5 aperture naturally creates a very narrow depth of field, with a nicer bokeh effect. But if that’s not enough, you can use its Live Focus feature which allows you to create really awesome bokeh for the background.

No doubt, the Live Focus bokeh is artificially created, but the dual camera design allow for precise separation of the subject from the background. Live Focus also allows you to adjust the amount of bokeh for the background.

Samsung Galaxy S10e Camera Performance – Video Samples

Like its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) is capable of recording 4K videos from both front and back cameras.

Samsung removed the 10 minute time limit for 4K recording, but there is still the 4 GB file size limit.

Video Sample #1 : Piano (1080p)

In this video, you can see the amount of detail the sensor captures, even at just 1080p.

You can also see how well its OIS capability worked, even when we switched between the main camera and the telephoto camera. Its ultra-wide camera does not support OIS, but has good EIS capability.

There was a slight lag switching between the cameras, but otherwise, the image quality was fantastic.

We love how well it controlled the exposure. You can see right into the store in the back, which is usually blown out in other cameras.

The Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY), sadly, does not support Hi-Res Audio recording, and its noise cancellation could really be much better.

We hope Samsung will look at adding context-aware noise cancellation, and perhaps a third microphone next to the rear cameras.

Video Sample #2 : Piano (4K)

The resolution at 4K is incredible. You can clearly read the store directory in the background!

Samsung also solved the focus seeking issue we noted when we reviewed the Samsung Galaxy S9+ (Price Check), which uses the same dual-aperture main camera.

Video Sample #3 : Street Market (1080p)

The Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) has really good OIS and EIS capability, giving us a silky-smooth video. It was also excellent at eliminating wind noise.

Video Sample #4 : Street Market (4K)

Its image stabilisation capabilities were not diminished with the higher resolution. Overall – very good OIS and EIS performance.

[adrotate group=”1″]

Video Sample #5 : Piano (1080p with HDR10+)

Like the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus (US | UK | MY), the Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) is able to record HDR10+ videos.

However, many devices still do not support HDR10+. Neither does YouTube. So check out what happens when you try to view a HDR10+ video on a non-HDR10+ platform.

Video Sample #6 : Piano (4K with HDR10+)

Just like with the earlier 1080p video, this HDR10+ video appears washed-out when viewed on a device or platform that does not support HDR10+.

Note that this is not a criticism of the HDR10+ video recording. The videos look great on the devices. We are just demonstrating what happens if you try to view them on non-HDR displays.

The Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) has the same fast charging performance as the the Galaxy S9 Plus, and the Galaxy Note9 – about 29-30 mAh per minute.

This gives it an average battery life : recharging ratio of 6.4 : 1. A rule of thumb – for one hour of battery life, charge it for 9.5 minutes.

The fastest recharging happened up to the 90% level. This took just 60 minutes. Then the recharging speed slowed down, and it took a further 25 minutes to top up the remaining 10%.

Samsung Galaxy S10e – Our Verdict + Award

The Samsung Galaxy S10+ (US | UK | MY) or the Galaxy S10 (US | UK | MY) are great smartphones, but there is always a market segment that wants a smaller device.

This is where the Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) comes in.

There are many who derided the Galaxy S10e when it was launched, until they tried it out. It often surprises people when they realise just how small the Galaxy S10e really is in real life!

Yet, it is a really fast and powerful smartphone, with most of the killer features its larger S10+ and S10 brethren boast.

It packs a flagship-class Exynos 9820 or Snapdragon 855 platform, with 6 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of storage into a compact device with a large 5.8-inch display but the physical size of a tradition 5-inch smartphone.

It is truly a remarkable feat of smartphone engineering.

We also want to salute Samsung for introducing the ability to record HDR10+ videos, although we have to point out that HDR10+ support is still limited. Samsung also seemed to have forgotten to add the ability to convert the videos.

But if you already have a TV or monitor that supports HDR10+, you can start creating HDR10+ videos with your Galaxy S10 Plus! And remember – HDR10+ is the future. It’s a matter of time before you upgrade to a HDR10+ display or television.

Its fingerprint sensor, which is built into the Power button, may not be as trendy than an in-display fingerprint sensor, but works great.

Its Wireless PowerShare feature is interesting and quite useful on-the-go. However, its slow recharging speed means its utility is largely limited to small devices like the Galaxy Buds and the Galaxy Watch. Recharging other smartphones is painfully slow, and should be relied on only in emergencies.

Now, the Samsung Galaxy S10e (US | UK | MY) isn’t for everyone. It’s targeted at a specific segment – people who want a powerful flagship device in a small, handy size.

They are those who prioritise size and weight over a larger battery and display. They also do not mind the lack of a telephoto camera that the Galaxy S10+ and the Galaxy S10 have.

If you are one of them, you will agree that the Samsung Galaxy S10e is worthy of our Editor’s Choice Award!

If you are not one of them, then the Samsung Galaxy S10+ or the Samsung Galaxy S10 are probably what you are looking for!

Samsung Galaxy S10 Models

Samsung officially released three models. The standard Samsung Galaxy S10 model will have two variants

  • a base model with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage
  • a higher-end model with 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage

Like its predecessor, the Galaxy S9+, there will be a larger Galaxy S10+ model with three variants too :

  • a base model with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage
  • a higher-end model with 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage
  • a premium model with 12 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage

How did Samsung double storage capacity to 1 TB? Read about the 1TB Samsung eUFS chip!

On top of that, they will introduce an entry-level model – the Galaxy S10e, with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB or 256 GB of storage. However, the Galaxy S10e (256GB) model appears to be limited to the United States and Canada.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Colour Options

The Samsung Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy S10e are available in four main colour options :

  • Prism White
  • Prism Black
  • Prism Green
  • Prism Blue

In addition, the Samsung Galaxy S10+ will also be available in two, premium Ceramic models :

  • Ceramic Black
  • Ceramic White

While the Samsung Galaxy S10e is available in two additional fun colours :

  • Flamingo Pink
  • Canary Yellow

Unfortunately, there is no sign of the Prism Blue, Flamingo Pink or Canary Yellow colours. As mentioned in our Galaxy S10 primer, not all colours are available in every country.

Samsung Galaxy S10+ Ceramic Comparison

The Samsung Galaxy S10+ with 512 GB or 1 TB of storage comes with the premium Ceramic White or Ceramic Black options. Let’s compare them to the regular Prism White and Prism Black colours.

According to our source at Samsung, the ceramic back offers “extra strength, durability and better resistance to scratches“. In addition, it has an additional “inner layer of scatter-protection film“.

In addition, Samsung revealed that the ceramic backs are a result of “an intense 200-hour long manufacturing process“. So these premium ceramic backs are more than just about colour and looks!

Gorilla Glass 6 + Gorilla Glass 5

The Samsung Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy S10e are said to be protected by the latest Gorilla Glass 6, which is about twice as tough as Gorilla Glass 5. It will withstand over 15 drops from a height of 1 meter on a rough surface.

However, they are only protected by Gorilla Glass 6 in the front. Their backs are protected by Gorilla Glass 5, except for premium Galaxy S10+ models.

As mentioned in the previous section, premium Samsung Galaxy S10+ models with 512 GB or 1 TB of storage have ceramic backs that are tougher and more scratch-resistant.

New Flagship Platforms

All four models will run on either the new Samsung Exynos 9820 (worldwide), or the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 (United States) platforms.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, on the other hand, is fabricated on the 7 nm process technology. It also uses a triple-cluster architecture, and comes with an Adreno 640 GPU and an X24 LTE modem that supports Cat20 download and uploads.

More Memory + Storage!

All four models have a lot more memory and storage :

  • The S10e has 6 GB of memory – 2 GB more than the Samsung Galaxy S9.
  • The S10 and S10+ have 8 GB of memory – 2 GB more than the Galaxy S9+)
  • The highest-end S10+ model has a whopping 12 GB of memory.

Storage capacities have also been expanded, with a 1 TB storage option thanks to the new Samsung eUFS chip.

  • The S10e comes with either 128 GB or 256 GB of storage.
  • The S10 and S10+ comes with either 128 GB or 512 GB of storage.
  • The highest-end S10+ model comes with 1 TB of storage.

And if that’s not enough, all three models come with a hybrid SIM slot, where the second SIM slot can support a microSD card of up to 512 GB in capacity.

Infinity-O Display

All four models will have the new Infinity-O displays, with circular or pill-shaped holes for the front cameras. This allows Samsung to deliver a screen-to-body ratio in excess of 90%.

  • The S10e has 5.8-inch flat display, with 1080 x 2280 pixels (438 poi)
  • The S10 has a 6.1-inch display with curved edges, and 1440 x 3040 pixels (550 ppi(
  • The S10+ has a 6.4-inch display with curved edges, and 1440 x 3040 pixels (495 ppi)

The regular S10, and the cheaper S10e (S10 Lite), have a circular hole because they only have a single front camera.

The larger S10+ (also known as the S10 Plus) has a pill-shaped hole because it has two front cameras. In addition to a regular selfie camera, they have an ultra wide-angle selfie camera.

Dynamic AMOLED Panel

All three models use the next-generation Dynamic AMOLED panels that are HDR10+ certified. They are literally the best smartphone displays in the industry right now, capable of producing 100% of the DCI-P3 colour range, with a maximum brightness of 1200 nits.

These Dynamic AMOLED panels were also engineered to reduce blue light by 42% without changing how colours appear. This would make for more comfortable viewing with less eyestrain, especially at night.

Gorilla Glass 6 + Gorilla Glass 5

The Samsung Galaxy S10 smartphones are said to be protected by the latest Gorilla Glass 6, but that’s not entirely accurate. Let us summarise its protection for you :

  • Premium S10+ : Gorilla Glass 6 protects the front, while Ceramic protects the back.
  • S10+ and S10 : Gorilla Glass 6 protects the front, while Gorilla Glass 5 protects the back.
  • S10e : Gorilla Glass 5 protects the front and back.

More Cameras

They all boast a higher resolution front camera, with a Dual Pixel sensor for faster and more accurate autofocus :

  • S10e and S10 : 10 MP Dual Pixel sensor with f/1.9 lens
  • S10+ : 10 MP Dual Pixel sensor with f/1.9 lens + 8 MP depth sensor with f/2.2 lens

The depth sensor in the Galaxy S10+ adds Live Focus capability for the first time to a front camera.

In the back, they feature either a dual-camera system, or triple-camera system.

  • S10e : 12 MP dual-aperture camera (f/1.5 and f/2.4) + 16 MP ultra wide-angle camera (f/2.2)
  • S10 and S10+ : 12 MP dual-aperture camera (f/1.5 and f/2.4) + 16 MP ultra wide-angle camera (f/2.2) + 12 MP telephoto camera (f/2.4)

Improved Super Slow-mo

Samsung doubled the Super Slow-mo recording time from 0.2-0.4 seconds to 0.4-0.8 seconds in all four models. Unfortunately, the video resolution is still limited to 720p at 960 fps.

Ultrasonic In-Display Fingerprint Sensor

To achieve a much greater display-to-body ratio, the S10 and S10+ will come with an in-display fingerprint sensor.

The cheaper S10e (represented by the grey model on the left here), will have a fingerprint sensor embedded into its Power button – a feature first seen in the Samsung Galaxy A7 2018.

In-display fingerprint sensors have already been introduced in smartphones like the OPPO R17 Pro, but these use optical sensors that basically take pictures for a 2D profile.

This new in-display fingerprint sensor uses ultrasonic technology, which uses ultrasound waves to take 3D profiles of the user’s fingerprints. This is said to be far more reliable and accurate than optical sensors.

Battery + Charging

All four models will come with a larger battery, with improved charging capabilities.

  • S10e : 3,100 mAh battery + QC 2.0 fast charging + Wireless PowerShare
  • S10 : 3,400 mAh battery + QC 2.0 fast charging + Wireless PowerShare
  • S10+ : 4,100 mAh battery + QC 2.0 fast charging + Wireless PowerShare

The Wireless PowerShare feature is particularly cool and useful. It allows Galaxy S10 smartphones to function as a wireless charger for any Qi-certified device!

Official Galaxy S10 Cases

Not all Samsung Galaxy S10 models will come with a bundled bumper case. To accommodate those who need better protection, Samsung offers six different type of cases with matching colours!
