Precision Boost Overdrive 2 : Adaptive Undervolting Comes To Ryzen!

AMD just introduced Precision Boost Overdrive 2 (PBO2), which introduces adaptive undervolting for Ryzen processors, amongst other improvements.

Find out what Precision Boost Overdrive 2 offers, and what effect it has on performance of AMD Ryzen 5000 series processors!

Precision Boost Overdrive 2 : Improved Overclocking + Adaptive Undervolting!

Precision Boost Overdrive is the dynamic overclocking capability built into AMD Ryzen processors, with these features :

  • raises socket power limit
  • raises motherboard VRM limit
  • can override max boost frequency
  • primarily designed to improve multi-thread performance

Precision Boost Overdrive 2 (PBO2) comes with all of the original PBO features, as well as these new features :.

  • improved single-thread performance
  • adds adaptive undervolting capability
  • adds standalone undervolting capability for AMD Ryzen 5000 Series processors
  • improved performance per watt.
  • can lower operating temperatures.
  • ability to customise voltages and frequencies to a specific processor.

Precision Boost Overdrive 2 : Curve Optimizer

The new adaptive undervolting capability in Precision Boost Overdrive 2 (PBO2) is achieved through the Curve Optimizer.

The new Curve Optimizer tells the firmware what window of undervolting is desired, and adapts to both light and heavy workloads.

Undervolting, however, will not be done with raw millivolts. Instead, it will be applied with “counts“.

  • 1 Count is approximately 3 mV ~ 5 mV. This range means less undervolting during high loads, and more undervolting when the load is lower.
  • You can adjust the voltage by +/- 30 Counts. 30 Counts would be a range of 90~150 mV.
  • The adjustments can be applied per core, or on all cores.

The Curve Optimizer algorithm is adaptive – so it will automatically underplot when the circumstances are suitable, and restore voltage when it needs to.

Precision Boost Overdrive 2 : Performance Boost

According to AMD, PBO2 offers better single-threaded performance than the original PBO.

Enabling it will let the Ryzen 7 5800X deliver 2.6% better 1T performance in CINEBENCH R20, while the Ryzen 9 5900X delivers 2% better 1T performance.

Hardly earth-shattering performance, but hey, it’s free!

Multi-threaded performance also gets a small but nice boost from PBO2.

AMD says the Ryzen 7 5800X should get a 2.2% boost, while the Ryzen 9 5900X gets a very nice 10% boost in multi-threaded performance!

Precision Boost Overdrive 2 : System Requirements

Here are the system requirements for Precision Boost Overdrive 2 to work :

  • AMD Ryzen 5000 Series desktop processor
  • AMD 500 or 400 Series motherboard
  • Motherboard BIOS based on AMD AGESA 1.1.8.0 or later

The PBO2 update is available for all AMD Ryzen 5000 Series desktop processors through a motherboard BIOS upgrade available in December 2020.

AMD Ryzen 4000 G-Series with Radeon Graphics Revealed!

On the heels of the Ryzen 3000 XT series, AMD just unveiled the Ryzen 4000 G-Series with Radeon Graphics!

Here is what you need to know about the new AMD Ryzen 4000 G-Series desktop APUs!

AMD Ryzen 4000 G-Series with Radeon Graphics Desktop APUs

Unlike the recently released Ryzen 3000 XT series, the Ryzen 4000 G-Series come with integrated Radeon Graphics cores. That makes them APUs, instead of pure processors.

While these new desktop APUs are called the 4000 series, they are still part of the 3rd Gen Ryzen processor family, and based on the AMD Zen 2 architecture.

At launch, AMD is introducing six Ryzen 4000 G-Series processors, three with a 65W TDP :

  • AMD Ryzen 7 4700G : 8C/16T | up to 4.4 GHz | 12 MB cache | 8 graphics cores
  • AMD Ryzen 5 4600G : 6C/12T | up to 4.2 GHz | 11 MB cache | 7 graphics cores
  • AMD Ryzen 3 4300G : 4C/8T | up to 4.0 GHz | 6 MB cache | 6 graphics cores

And three desktop APUs with a 35W TDP :

  • AMD Ryzen 7 4700GE : 8C/16T | up to 4.3 GHz | 12 MB cache | 8 graphics cores
  • AMD Ryzen 5 4600GE : 6C/12T | up to 4.2 GHz | 11 MB cache | 7 graphics cores
  • AMD Ryzen 3 4300GE : 4C/8T | up to 4.0 GHz | 6 MB cache | 6 graphics cores

AMD shared with us this chart to show how much of a performance advantage their Ryzen 4000 G-Series desktop APUs have over the 9th Gen Intel Core processors :

AMD Ryzen 4000 G-Series : Price + Availability

Unfortunately, all six desktop APUs will be limited to the OEM market initially.

AMD does not plan to introduce them to the retail market, until later. So there is no information on their price or retail availability.

AMD expects desktops with these processors to ship from OEM partners like Lenovo and HP starting in Q3 2020.

The Ryzen 3000 processors boast significantly better single-threaded performance, with an L3 cache that is twice as large as the last-generation 2nd Gen Ryzen processors.

They are also PCIe 4.0-ready, offering 24 lanes that can be increased to 40 lanes, when paired with the new AMD X570 motherboard.

But the best part about these 3rd Gen Ryzen processors (for current AMD users) is their backward compatibility. As long as your AM4 motherboard has an updated BIOS, you can just upgrade to a brand-new Ryzen 3000 class processor!

After working with the RED Digital Cinema team, AMD came up with some advice on how to optimise your system for 64 cores.

Optimising For 64 Cores Summarised

1. Ensure there is 1 GB to 2 GB of RAM per thread – the system should have 128 GB to 256 GB of memory.

2. Update to Windows 10 version 18362.535 or better (KB4530684 November 2019 Update)

3. The Windows application should be updated to support 65 or more threads, with the ability to span more than one processor group

4. For Linux users, Clear Linux Distro is the best for performance.

5. Reduce storage I/O bottleneck by disabling the virus scanner and system restore feature.

6. Use separate drives for project read, project write and operating systems.

7. AMD recommends these NVMe SSD models for maximum performance with 64 cores :

AMD Ryzen 7 4800H Performance

The AMD Ryzen 7 4800U is targeted directly at the Intel Core i7-9750H, offering :

  • Up to 5% better single-threaded performance
  • Up to 46% better multi-threaded performance
  • Up to 25% faster 4K video encoding on Adobe Premiere
  • Up to 39% faster gameplay physics simulation performance

Thanks to its 2 extra cores and ability to process 4 extra threads, the Ryzen 7 4800H significantly cuts down on the time it takes for content creators to process their work.

Now, its integrated Radeon Vega 7 Graphics is not very fast, which is why AMD did not quote any graphics performance figures. In fact, it has one less core and runs at at a slower speed than the Radeon Vega 8 Graphics in the Ryzen 7 4800U.

Instead, AMD shared with us the PHYSICS test results of the 3DMark Firestrike benchmark. It shows the Ryzen 7 4800H beating not only the Core i7-9750H mobile processor, but also the Core i7-9700K desktop processor! However, it is CPU-only benchmark.

Its gaming performance will definitely be poorer than that of the 15W Ryzen 7 4800U, which means it will likely be paired with a Radeon RX 5500M or RX 5600M, to take advantage of the new AMD SmartShift capability.

AMD Ryzen 7 4800H Availability

One of the first laptops to feature the AMD Ryzen 7 4800H is the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14, which claims to be the world’s most powerful 14-inch gaming laptop.

It comes with a 14-inch Pantone-validated display with a Full HD or WQHD resolution, and a 120 Hz refresh rate.

It is less than 18 mm thick and weighs just 1.6 kg. ASUS claims a 10 hour battery life, not while gaming though but playing videos.

The Zephyrus G14 and the first slew of laptops to feature the Ryzen 7 4800H will debut in Q1 2020. We will update this article once we know more.

The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X Up Close!

The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X has eight Ryzen processor cores, with a 3.6 GHz base clock, and a 4.4 GHz boost clock.

It supports SMT (simultaneous multi-threading), and can therefore handle 16 threads simultaneously.

Like the previous generations, it has 512 KB L2 cache per core, with a total L2 cache size of 4 MB. But thanks to a larger transistor budget, it has a very large 32 MB L3 cache – twice that of the last-generation 2nd Gen Ryzen processors!

Despite the changes in the design philosophy, the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X still uses the AMD AM4 socket. In fact, it is backward compatibility with existing AM4 motherboards!

As long as your AM4 motherboard has an updated BIOS, you can just replace your old Ryzen processor with a brand-new Ryzen 7 3700X processor!

New Zen 2 Microarchitecture

Codenamed Matisse, the 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen processors are based on the new AMD Zen 2 microarchitecture, which delivers 15% better instructions per clock through these improvements :

  • 256-bit single-op floating point (AVX-256) for notably stronger performance in creative workloads.
  • Doubled Micro-Op cache size (now 4K) to increase throughput by preventing re-decode of operations.
  • New TAGE branch predictor, with larger L1 and L2 BTBs, to increase throughput by reducing stalls from mispredicts.
  • A third address generation unit (AGU), which keeps the execution engine more reliably fed with data in DRAM.

  • Improved load/store bandwidth throughout the device, which increases throughput by keeping more data on-chip.
  • A doubled L3 cache size to 32MB per CCD, which reduces effective memory latency by up to 33ns — excellent for games.
  • Improved fetch and pre-fetch capabilities, arming the execution engines more readily with needed data.
  • Improved SMT fairness for ALU and AGU schedulers, reducing thread contention and throughput.
  • A larger 180-entry register file, providing the CPU more immediate access to more working data.
  • New hardware mitigation against speculative store bypass (Spectre V4), expanding the strong security profile of “Zen(+).”

New Chiplet Design

Unlike the previous Zen and Zen+ microarchitectures, Zen 2 uses a chiplet design that combines separate CPU chiplets with an I/O chiplet, using Infinity Fabric to connect them.

This chiplet design allows the performance-critical CPU chiplet to be fabricated on the 7 nm TSMC process, while the I/O functions are fabricated on the less expensive 12 nm GlobalFoundries process.

The new I/O chiplet adds PCIe 4.0 support, offering 24 lanes that can be increased to 40 lanes, when paired with the new AMD X570 motherboard.

For more details on what’s new in these 3rd generation Ryzen processors, we recommend reading The AMD 3rd Gen Ryzen Deep Dive Tech Briefing!

AMD X570 Chipset

To complement the 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen processors, AMD introduced a new X570 chipset.

The AMD X570 chipset basically adds support for PCI Express 4.0M.2 Gen 4 and USB 3.2 Gen2.

On the other hand, it drops support for the first generation AMD Ryzen processors, like the Ryzen 7 1800X, and the Ryzen 5 1600X.

This does not mean you will actually need to buy an AMD X570 motherboard. The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X processor will work with all existing AMD 400-series (and some AMD 300-series) motherboards, with one caveat – the motherboard must be upgraded with the latest BIOS update to support the 3rd Gen Ryzen processors.

AMD Wraith Prism

The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X continues to use the excellent AMD Wraith Prism cooler, designed and manufactured by Cooler Master.

This is an upgraded version of the AMD Wraith Max cooler with heat pipes that are in direct contact with the CPU for better performance, and a rainbow LED ring.

It uses a 7-blade fan, with a maximum noise level of 39 dBA. The fan blades are LED-illuminated, but you can turn off the lights.

3D Rendering Speed – CINEBENCH R20

CINEBENCH R20 is a real-world 3D rendering benchmark based on the MAXON Cinema 4D animation software.

It is a great way to accurately determine the actual performance of a processor in 3D content creation.

This new version uses a much larger and more complex test scene than CINEBENCH R15, requiring about 8X more computational power and 4X more memory to render.

CINEBENCH R20 Single Core Performance

This Single Core test is not reflective of real world performance, but it is useful to find out the performance of the individual core.

On paper, the Ryzen 7 3700X is almost similar to the Ryzen 7 2700X, but we can see that it has 17.3% better single-core performance!

In fact, it was 8.3% faster than the Intel Core i7-8700K, which has higher base and boost clock speed!

CINEBENCH R20 Multi Core Performance

The Multi Core test shows the processor’s real-world 3D rendering performance.

The Ryzen 7 3700X was 21.8% faster than the Ryzen 7 2700X, and a whopping 34.5% faster than the Ryzen 7 1800X, even though they are all 8-core, 16-thread processors.

This clearly demonstrates the improvement in microarchitecture throughout the generations.

Multi-Threading Boost

This is not a CINEBENCH benchmark result. The Multi-Threading Boost is our calculation of the performance boost that the processor’s Multi-Threading capability provides. It is based on the MP Ratio and the number of physical cores.

Due to their long experience with SMT (Simultaneous Multi-Threading) technology, Intel still has the edge, with the Core i7-8700K delivering a 25% boost.

The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X did well though, improving on the Ryzen 7 1800X by 6%, and the Ryzen 7 2700X by 31%.

Video Transcoding Speed – HandBrake

HandBrake is a free, open-source video transcoding utility, which converts a video file from one resolution / format to another.

As you can imagine, it’s very compute-intensive, which makes it a great benchmark for multi-core processors.

In our test, we converted a 4K video of 1.3 GB in size into a 1080p video (HQ1080p30).

The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X was excellent in this test, transcoding the video 35 seconds (18%) faster than the next best processor – the Ryzen 7 2700X.

It was also almost 50% faster than the Ryzen 7 1800X – a first generation 8-core Ryzen processor!

Radial Blur Speed – Photoshop CC 14

The radial blur filter adds the perception of motion to a picture. This is a compute-intensive operation that benefits from multiple processing cores.

This radial blur test was performed on a single 13.5 megapixel photo, with a filesize of 4,910,867 bytes.

Yet another great example of how much faster the Zen 2 microarchitecture is, compared to the Zen+ and Zen microarchitectures.

The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X is 11% faster than the Ryzen 7 2700X, and a whopping 29% faster than the Ryzen 7 1800X.

It is also just over 50% faster than the Core i7-8700K, which we must note is a 6-core, 12-thread processor.

The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X had a 10% higher CPU score than the Ryzen 7 2700X, and a 26% higher CPU score than the Core i7-8700K.

Of course, the CPU only has a slight influence on a game’s performance, so its effect on the overall gaming score is less significant.

In the end, the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X was 2% faster than the Ryzen 7 2700X, and 4% faster than the Core i7-8700K.

Time Spy Extreme – 3840 x 2160

At the higher 4K resolution, the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X had a 22% higher CPU score than the Ryzen 7 2700X, and a 25% higher CPU score than the Core i7-8700K.

Now check out the processors’ effect on the overall gaming score…

At 4K, the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X was 3% faster than the Ryzen 7 2700X, and 3.6% faster than the Core i7-8700K.

F1 2019

F1 2019 is a really new racing game by Codemasters, released on 28 June 2019.

We tested it on three resolutions at the Ultra High settings :

  • 1080p : 1920 x 1080
  • 1440p : 2560 x 1440
  • 2160p : 3840 x 2160

1080p Gaming Resolution

Even though it promised a 15% improvement in instructions per clock (IPC), the Ryzen 7 3700X performed virtually the same as the last-generation Ryzen 7 2700X.

Micro-architectural changes matter though. They were both 25% faster than the Ryzen 7 1800X.

And even though it only has 6 cores, the Intel Core i7-8700K was slightly (3%) faster…

1440p Gaming Resolution

At the higher 1440p resolution, the importance of CPU performance was greatly reduced. It didn’t matter which processor you used – they all delivered almost the same frame rates.

2160p Gaming Resolution

Increasing the resolution to 4K virtually eliminated the influence of CPU performance. They all had the same frame rates.

World War Z

Based on the 2013 movie, World War Z is a relatively new third-person shooter game, released in April 2019.

We tested it on three resolutions using the Vulkan API at the High settings :

  • 1080p : 1920 x 1080
  • 1440p : 2560 x 1440
  • 2160p : 3840 x 2160

1080p Gaming Resolution

At 1080p, the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X and the Intel Core i7-8700K were far head of the pack, leading the Ryzen 7 2700X by about 20%.

They were both also about 27% faster than the Ryzen 5 2600X and the Ryzen 7 1800X.

1440p Gaming Resolution

When we increased the resolution to 1440p, the Ryzen 7 3700X actually delivered 8% higher frame rates than the Core i7-8700K, and 23% higher frame rates than the last-generation Ryzen 7 2700X.

2160p Gaming Resolution

Unbelievable! The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X continued to hold up the frame rate at 4K much better than the other processors.

At this resolution, it delivered 52% higher frame rates than the Core i7-8700K, and 60% higher frame rates than the other processors in this comparison.

Ashes of the Singularity

Ashes of the Singularity is a 2016 game that supports multi-core processing and asynchronous compute.

In this game, the single core CPU performance has a significant effect on the actual frame rate.

We tested it on three resolutions using the DirectX 12 API at the High settings :

  • 1080p : 1920 x 1080
  • 1440p : 2560 x 1440
  • 2160p : 3840 x 2160

1080p Gaming Resolution

We can see here that the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X has significantly improved single-core performance. It was almost as fast as the Core i7-8700K, even though the Intel processor has higher clock speeds.

They both delivered frame rates that were about 36% faster than the Ryzen 7 2700X and Ryzen 5 2600X processors.

1440p Gaming Resolution

At the higher 1440p resolution, the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X was just 3% slower than the Core i7-8700K, but 33% faster than the Ryzen 7 2700X, and 37% faster than the Ryzen 7 1800X.

2160p Gaming Resolution

When we hit 4K, the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X was now 3.5% slower than the Core i7-8700K, but the gap closed with the other processors.

It was now 28% faster than the Ryzen 7 2700X, and 30% faster than the Ryzen 7 1800X..

AMD Ryzen 7 3700X – Our Verdict + Award!

The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X is not just an improved version of the last-generation Ryzen 7 2700X processor.

Built around the new Zen 2 microarchitecture, it uses a new chiplet design which combines 7 nm and 12 nm fabrication technologies to deliver a more powerful, and power-efficient processor at a great price point.

The end result? Significantly better single-core and multi-core performance, which can deliver really surprising boosts in gaming performance.

The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X debuts at the same price point as the Ryzen 7 2700X – US$329, and is bundled with the same Wraith Prism cooler.

This makes it a very compelling option for those who want the best of both worlds – gaming and content creation performance – at an affordable price point.

What if you currently own an older AMD Ryzen system?

  • If it uses a first-generation AMD Ryzen 7 processor like the Ryzen 7 1800X, upgrading to the Ryzen 7 3700X will give you a big 30-50% boost in gaming and content creation performance.
  • If it uses a second-generation AMD Ryzen 7 processor like the Ryzen 7 2700X, upgrading to the Ryzen 7 3700X will give you a 10-20% boost in gaming and content creation performance.

And here is a BIG ADVANTAGE for existing Ryzen users – the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X is compatible with all existing AMD 400-series (and some 300-series) motherboards with a BIOS update. This makes it a very affordable upgrade option.

For all these reasons, we gladly give the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X processor our Editor’s Choice Award. Great job, AMD!

AMD RyzenFall, MasterKey, Fallout, Chimera Mitigation Guide

The recently-discovered RyzenFall, MasterKey, Fallout and Chimera security flaws affecting AMD’s latest processor platforms are ruining the AMD Ryzen 2 pre-launch vibes. So it’s no surprise to see AMD working hard to fix the vulnerabilities.

In this article, we will share with you the latest AMD mitigation options for the RyzenFall, MasterKey, Fallout and Chimera security vulnerabilities.

What’s Really Affected?

While it is accurate to say that the AMD Ryzen and AMD EPYC processors are affected by RyzenFall, MasterKey, Fallout and Chimera, these vulnerabilities do not affect the actual processor cores. Neither are they related to the Zen microarchitecture.

This makes them completely different from the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities that have been “built into” over 2,800 CPU models!

Instead, the new RyzenFall, MasterKey, Fallout and Chimera security vulnerabilities are found in:

  • the AMD Secure Processor (integrated into the new Ryzen and EPYC processors), and
  • the AMD Promontory chipsets that are paired with Ryzen and Ryzen Pro desktop processors.

The AMD Promontory chipset is used in many Socket AM4 desktop, and Socket TR4 high-end desktop (HEDT) platforms.

AMD EPYC, Ryzen Embedded, and Ryzen Mobile platforms do not use the Promontory chipset.

The AMD RyzenFall, MasterKey, Fallout + Chimera Mitigations

RyzenFall + Fallout

Issue : An attacker with administrative access can write to the AMD Secure Processor (PSP registers to exploit vulnerabilities in the interface between the x86 processor core and AMD Secure Processor.

Impact : The attacker can circumvent security controls to install difficult-to-detect malware in the x86 System Management Mode (SMM). The access is not persistent across reboots.

Planned Mitigations : AMD will issue AMD Secure Processor firmware patches through BIOS updates in coming weeks. No performance impact is expected.

MasterKey (PSP Privilege Escalation)

Issue : An attacker with administrative access can write malicious firmware updates, without the AMD Secure Processor (PSP) detecting the “corruption”.

Impact : The attacker can circumvent security controls to install difficult-to-detect malware. These changes are persistent, even following a system reboot.

Planned Mitigations : AMD will issue AMD Secure Processor firmware patches through BIOS updates in coming weeks. No performance impact is expected.

Chimera

Issue : An attacker with administrative access can install a malicious driver to access certain features in the AMD Promontory chipset.

Impact : The attacker can access physical memory through the Promontory chipset. The attacker can also install difficult-to-detect malware in the chipset, but this is not persistent across reboots.

Planned Mitigations : AMD will issue chipset patches through BIOS updates in coming weeks. No performance impact is expected.

The AMD Ryzen 7 Performance In 3D Rendering & Video Transcoding

The AMD Ryzen 7 processors are arguably the most anticipated processors of the last few years. This is because they promise to offer 8-core performance at the price of an Intel quad-core processor, with comparable power efficiency! In this article, we will examine the AMD Ryzen 7 performance in 3D rendering and video transcoding speed, and see how it compares against a quad-core Intel Core i7 processor.

The extra cores of the AMD Ryzen 7 processors will deliver the greatest performance boost in 3D rendering and video transcoding. They are very compute-intensive work, and are therefore programmed to take full advantage of all available cores. Let’s check out how well it does!

The AMD Ryzen 7 Performance Advantage

The AMD Ryzen 7 processors do not just boast 8 cores, they are also the first AMD processors to support SMT (Simultaneous Multi-Threading). SMT allows each core to handle two simultaneous threads, as if they are two virtual processor cores.

In this article, we will take a look at the Ryzen 7 performance in 3D rendering and video transcoding by comparing the AMD Ryzen 7 1800X against the Intel Core i7-6700K processor. Here is a table comparing their key specifications.

AMD Ryzen 7 1800X Intel Core i7-6700K Difference
Cores / Threads 8 / 16 4 / 8 + 100%
Base Clock 3.6 GHz 4.0 GHz – 10%
Boost Clock 4.0 GHz 4.2 GHz – 4.8%
L2 Cache 4 MB 1 MB + 300%
L3 Cache 16 MB 8 MB + 100%
Memory Speed DDR4-2666 DDR4-2133 + 25%

Now, we will be the first to admit that this is a rather “unfair” comparison because the Core i7-6700K is a quad-core processor that costs only as much as the Ryzen 7 1700. However, this is the fastest Intel processor we have on hand, so let’s just roll with it, and see what we find…

Ryzen 7 3D Rendering Speed – CINEBENCH R15

CINEBENCH R15 is a real-world 3D rendering benchmark based on the MAXON Cinema 4D animation software. This is a great way to accurately determine the actual performance of a processor in 3D content creation.

CINEBENCH R15 Single Core

This Single Core test is not reflective of real world performance, but it is useful to find out the performance of the individual core.

The Single Core test shows that the individual processor core of the Ryzen 7 1800X is about 13.4% slower than the processor core of the Core i7-6700K. Of course, the Core i7-6700K has a 5% higher boost clock speed. If we adjust the results to account for that, the Intel Skylake core is about 10% faster than the AMD Ryzen core, clock for clock.

CINEBENCH R15 Multi Core

This shows the real-world performance of both processors. Having twice the number of cores allowed the Ryzen 7 1800X to beat the Core i7-6700K by 81%. Adjusting for the average 7.5% difference in base and boost clock speeds, the Ryzen 7 1800X would deliver 94% better performance than the Core i7-6700K at the same clock speeds.

CINEBENCH R15 MP Ratio

The analysis of the Multi-Processing Ratio is useful in checking the efficiency of the SMT implementation. The MP Ratio is independent of the processor’s clock speed.

The multi-threading capability of the Intel Core i7-6700K delivered a 22% boost to its Multi-Core processing speed. The AMD Ryzen 7 1800X, on the other hand, recorded a 27.4% boost to its Multi-Core processing speed. This means the AMD Ryzen’s SMT implementation is 5.8% more efficient than the Intel Skylake’s Hyper-Threading.

Ryzen 7 Transcoding Speed – HandBrake

HandBrake is a free, open-source video transcoding utility. Video transcoding basically converts a video file from one resolution / format to another. As you can imagine, it’s very compute-intensive. In our test, we converted a 4K video of 1.3 GB in size into a 1080p video (HQ1080p30).

The AMD Ryzen 7 1800X transcoded the video in less than 4.5 minutes, while the Intel Core i7-6700K took just under 7.5 minutes. This makes the Ryzen 7 1800X 68% faster than the Core i7-6700K.

If we adjust for the average 7.5% difference in base and boost clock speeds, the Ryzen 7 1800X would deliver 81% better performance than the Core i7-6700K at the same clock speeds.
