Water and computers don’t mix well. That’s a fact that hardware enthusiasts have to deal with when they keep their overclocked computers cool using water cooling systems. The weight and bulk of these water cooling systems as well as the need to ensure water-tight connections have, so far, kept them from ever being used in a laptop. That changes with the ROG GX700 – the world’s first liquid-cooled gaming laptop.
ROG GX700 Liquid-Cooling Technology Revealed
On April 27, 2016, Republic of Gamers (ROG) unveiled the ROG GX700 with a detachable Hydro Overclocking System cooling module. During the event, they revealed how they accomplished this feat – creating a liquid-cooled gaming laptop. They also revealed the performance boost ROG GX700 users can expect from using the Hydro Overclocking System.

The ROG Hydro Overclocking System
When the ROG GX700 is attached to the ROG Hydro Overclocking System, a pump in the center pumps a liquid coolant into GX700 where it absorbs heat from the CPU, graphics processor and the memory modules. The heated coolant is then channeled back into the cooling module where two radiators help to dissipate the heat. The coolant is then recirculated back into the GX700.
To ensure water-fastness, the Hydro Overclocking System uses a patented connector design between the cooling module and the ROG GX700 notebook that prevents leaking. They even made sure that the pipes are kink-proof so the liquid coolant flows smoothly. To reduce maintenance, ROG uses a liquid coolant with organic-acid inhibitor to protect the internal components from corrosion. They also designed the system for very low depletion rate of the additive.
Extreme Overclocking
Thanks to the Hydro Overclocking System, the ROG GX700 can deliver much better overclocking potential. According to Republic of Gamers, users can overclock the Intel Core i7 processor by up to 48% with a BClock boost of 31% – boosting the clock speed from 3.2 GHz to 4.0 GHz.
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 GPU can be overclocked by 43%, delivering 3DMark 11 score in excess of 17,000. Even the DDR4 memory modules can be overclocked by 31%, from 2133 MHz to 2800 MHz.
