PLUS is warning the public to expect a massive traffic jam, with over 7.6 million vehicles estimated to swarm its highways over the next four days!

Many Malaysians are expected to take advantage during the Maulidur Rasul (Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday) holiday, offering a 3-day weekend from Saturday to Monday.

In its statement released on Wednesday, 5 October 2022, PLUS said that they are estimating 1.9 million vehicles per day to use its highways from Friday until Monday.

LUS Head of Operations Excellence, Mohd Yusuf Abdul Aziz said PLUS has recorded daily traffic volumes of an average of 1.7 million vehicles since moving to the endemic phase and the trend had shown spikes of 1.9 million vehicles before each weekend.

We expect with more travellers taking advantage of the three-day weekend, traffic will be higher and a longer journey can be expected.

Therefore, we advise highway customers to be prepared and ensure their vehicles are fit for a longer drive this weekend.

 

How To Prepare For Traffic Jam On PLUS This Weekend!

PLUS is advising its highway users to expect a longer journey, and prepare for the inevitable traffic jam. Here are some tips to help prepare for a smoother journey this long weekend.

  1. Make sure your vehicle is in good condition and fit for a longer travel.
    a) Service your vehicle if necessary
    b) Ensure the tyres are in good condition, and properly inflated
    c) Ensure that the brakes are working properly
    d) Top up the fuel tank for a longer journey
  2. Top up your Touch ‘n Go card and/or TNG eWallet (if you are using TNG RFID).
  3. Get traffic updates from PLUS through :
    a)Twitter (@PLUSTrafik),
    b) PLUSLine hotline : 1800-88-0000
    c) PUTRI chatbot on the PLUS app
    d) Electronic signboards at various locations along the highways
  4. Use Waze or Google Maps to get live traffic updates, and to plan your travel.
  5. Please make sure you enter and exit the highway using the correct toll booth based on your payment type.
    If you entered using TNG RFID, you must exit using TNG RFID.
    Only Touch ‘n Go card users may alternately use the SmartTag booth (if they have one), or the TnG card booth.

While you are no longer required to wear a face mask indoors or outdoors, the Malaysia Ministry of Health (KKM) strongly recommends wearing one at highway rest stops, as they will inevitably be crowded.

This warning about an RFID bar code scam has gone viral on WhatsApp, and social media.

It claims that scammers are sending people RFID stickers, and asking them to scan the bar code.

Allegedly, scanning the RFID bar code will cause your phone to be hacked by these scammers!

Truth : Scanning RFID Bar Codes Will NOT Hack Your Phone!

This is yet another example of FAKE NEWS circulating on WhatsApp and social media, and here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : There Is No RFID Bar Code Scanning Scam

First of all – let me just say that there is no such thing as an RFID bar code scanning scam. No one can hack your phone just because you scan an RFID bar code.

The bar code is nothing more than a series of numbers, which you can readily see printed under the bar code. These numbers cannot possibly hack your phone / smartphone.

Fact #2 : RFID Bar Code Is Used To Register Sticker

The bar code visible in the clear window of the TNG RFID self-fitment kit is merely the serial number for the RFID sticker (also known as an RFID tag).

This serial number is used to register the RFID sticker, by scanning scan the bar code using the TNG eWallet mobile app.

All it does is link the RFID sticker to your TNG eWallet account, so that all toll charges are automatically deducted from that account.

Fact #3 : There Are Easier + Cheaper Ways To Hack Your Phone

Truth be told – there are far easier and cheaper ways to hack your phone, than send you a free RFID sticker and ask you to scan the bar code.

These scammers will have to put in considerable expense and technical expertise into hacking the TNG eWallet app, and inserting their malware that the fake RFID number would trigger.

But why bother? If they can hack the TNG eWallet, they don’t even need to send you any fake RFID bar code to scan!

Making fake RFID stickers (tags) that look like genuine TNG RFID self-fitment kits costs money. Sending these fake kits also put them at risk, because deliveries can be traced.

There are many other ways to compromise your smartphone. There is simply no reason why scammers to waste time and money on such a convoluted scheme.

All TnG eWallet services are finally back online, after going down for over 8 hours!

Here is everything you need to know!

 

TnG eWallet Down Earlier : No Payments Or Transfers!

At around 1 PM today, the TnG eWallet platform went down, preventing users from making payments or even money transfers.

One of our readers, Kent Ng, shared with me the error messages he received in the TnG eWallet app.

When he tried to transfer money, he received a Connection Time Out error. He couldn’t even pay for parking using TnG eWallet!

Initially, TNG Digital said that RFID transactions were affected, but a few hours later, they said that RFID can still be used, but you are limited to the balance in your TnG eWallet.

The automatic reload feature in the TnG eWallet is still down, so you cannot use RFID to go through toll booths if there is insufficient balance in your eWallet.

Please check your TnG eWallet balance, and make sure you have enough for the toll. Otherwise, please avoid using the TnG RFID lanes at toll booths until this issue is resolved.

You will have to switch to the Touch ‘n Go card, with or without SmartTAG, to pay at toll booths. Please make sure you have sufficient balance in your TnG card.

 

TnG eWallet Back Online After Going Down For Over 8 Hours!

After netizens complained about not being able to make payments, TNG Digital posted a short statement that they are currently working on a solution.

Dear valued user, 📣

We understand you’re experiencing a service interruption in your eWallet at the moment & may not be able to perform payments including RFID & PayDirect transactions. 🚫

Rest assured that we are currently rectifying this matter & will update you accordingly, as soon as it is back online. 🧐

We apologise for the inconvenience caused. Thank you for your kind patience & understanding. 🙏

The Touch ‘n Go eWallet team. 💙

About six hours later, they were still not able to restore payments. But the good news is that they say that TNG RFID will work at highway toll booths, as long as you have sufficient balance in your eWallet.

Touch ‘n Go Wallet is currently experiencing a technical difficulty and as such we are experiencing a disruption of all Touch ‘n Go Wallet services.

Touch ‘n Go cards and RFID can still be used in highways, transit and parking if you have sufficient balance.

You can reload all your Touch ‘n Go cards at physical reload points as usual.

We are working to restore our services as soon as possible.

At 9:35 PM – after over 8 hours of downtime – TNG Digital finally announced that all Touch ‘n Go eWallet are finally up and running!

Touch ‘n Go Wallet and its services are up and running.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused earlier and thank you for your kind patients.

They however noticeably did not reveal what happened to their platform, or explain why it took them so long to get it back online again.

We can only hope that they learned from this incident, and will put in place measures to prevent it from happening again…

TNG RFID Self-Fitment Step 1 : Install It On Your Vehicle

Here is a handy video guide on how to install the RFID tag on your vehicle :

  1. Clean the surface of the windscreen or headlamp
  2. Peel off the RFID tag from the Self-Fitment Kit
  3. Attach theRFID Tag either to :
    a) the exterior of the upper left windscreen, or
    b) the left headlamp of the vehicle

 

TNG RFID Self-Fitment Step 2 : Register + Activate Your Tag

  1. Register a Touch ‘n Go Mobility eXperience account at mx.touchngo.com.my.
  2. Log into your Mobility eXperience account.
  3. Register your TNG RFID Tag number.

  1. Add your vehicle number to pair your RFID Tag with it.

  1. Add your mobile number to link your RFID Tag to your Touch ‘n Go eWallet.

That’s it! Now you just have to wait for an activation SMS in the next 24 hours, before you can start using your new RFID Tag!.

After almost 2 years of delay, TNG RFID will finally be operational on the PLUS Highway from 15 January 2022 onwards!

Here is what you need to know…

 

TNG RFID @ PLUS Highway : Originally Scheduled For April 2020!

TNG RFID is an electronic payment system that uses an RFID (radio-frequency identification) tag that is affixed to the vehicle’s windscreen or headlamp, and linked to the user’s Touch ‘n Go eWallet account.

The TNG RFID Tag is linked to the user’s Touch ‘n Go eWallet account, and whenever your vehicle approaches a toll, an overhead scanner its encrypted code and automatically deducts the fare, allowing you to pass without stopping.

This system was originally meant to be implemented on the PLUS highway in April 2020, but was repeatedly delayed until now…

TNG RFID Will Finally Be Operational On PLUS Highway!

On 16 December 2021, the Malaysia Ministry of Works (KKR) announced that the TNG RFID system will be activated from 15 January 2022 onwards for Class 1 light vehicles from the Juru toll in Penang to the Skudai toll in Johor Bahru.

This is part of the Ministry’s Intelligent Transport System (ITS) blueprint, which includes the Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll system.

With the RFID system enabled, motorists will be able to pass through RFID tolls at up to 30 km/h, with the convenience of automatic top-ups.

Don’t worry if you don’t have your RFID tag yet. PLUS highway tolls will still support Touch ‘n Go cards and SmartTAG. Support for these legacy payment methods will be gradually reduced to allow for more RFID lanes.

Touch ‘n Go and Shell Malaysia just announced that they will introduce RFID fuelling through the use of TNG RFID. They also announced two promotions to promote TNG RFID at Shell stations!

 

TNG + Shell Announce RFID Fuel Payment

Touch ‘n Go and Shell Malaysia will sign a memorandum of understanding to introduce and use TNG RFID for fuel payments at Shell stations nationwide.

The introduction of TNG RFID fuelling will add a new benefit for TNG RFID users that currently number over 1 million to date.

The TNG RFID tag has an embedded radio-frequency chip, and is installed on the windscreen or headlamp of the vehicle.

An overhead scanner at the fuelling bay will read the signal from the TNG RFID tag, and deduct the cost of the fuel from the user’s TNG eWallet.

 

TNG + Shell Announce RFID + eWallet Offers

To spur the use of TNG RFID, Touch ‘n Go and Shell also announced two offers :

  • 15 February to 31 March 2020 : They will give away 10,000 free TNG RFID tags at select Shell stations to car owners who spend at least RM 50 using their Touch ‘n Go eWallet.
  • 17 February to 14 March 2020 : e-Tunai recipients will receive a cash back of RM 5 + RM 2 when they spend a minimum of RM 20 using their Touch ‘n Go eWallet at Shell stations nationwide.

TNG RFID Tag : What Is It?

TNG RFID is an electronic payment system that uses an RFID (radio-frequency identification) tag to pass through tolls.

The TNG RFID Tag is affixed to the vehicle’s windscreen or headlamp, and linked to the user’s Touch ‘n Go eWallet account.

Whenever the vehicle approaches a toll, an overhead scanner its encrypted code and automatically deducts the fare, allowing the user to pass without stopping.

The TNG RFID Tag is currently enabled for all Class 1 vehicles at these highways :

Please be warned that Touch ‘n Go plan to shut down all TNG RFID Fitment Centres from 12-14 February 2020! Here is what we know so far…

 

Free RFID Tags @ TNG RFID Fitment Centres To End

During the 18-month pilot programme, Touch ‘n Go had been giving out free TNG RFID tags. That will end when they start charging RM35 for each TNG RFID Tag from 15 February 2020 onwards.

After that announcement, there was been a rush for the free TNG RFID tags, with reports of long queues, and mobile fitment booths running out of RFIG tags.

TNG RFID Fitment Centres To Close From 12-14 February!

It’s about to get even worse, because Touch ‘n Go apparently just issued a notice that they are shutting down their RFID Fitment Centres from 12-14 February 2020!

Now, you have to get your free TNG RFID tags today, or tomorrow, because all Touch ‘n Go RFID Fitment Centres will close from 12-14 February 2020. And as far as we know, this includes their mobile fitment booths as well.

TNG RFID Tag To Cost RM35 From 15 Feb 2020 Onwards!

During the 18-month pilot programme, Touch ‘n Go has been giving out free TNG RFID tags. That will end when they start charging RM35 for each TNG RFID Tag from 15 February 2020 onwards.

If you want to get your free TNG RFID Tag, you can still do so until 14 February – yes, Valentine’s Day! We strongly recommend you get your free tag ASAP!

All TNG RFID tags are covered by a lifetime one-time replacement warranty, in case they are damaged or vandalised. You only need to purchase a separate RFID tag when you change your car.

In addition, if you add your existing Touch ‘n Go cards to your Touch ‘n Go eWallet to avoid them going dormant. And you will be able to receive your e-refunds on those cards.

Touch ‘n Go also announced a two-month promotion to kickstart their nationwide rollout – the Ultimate RFID Toll Pass!

Trend Micro : Next Gen Payment Technologies

18 March 2016 – Since the boom of e-commerce, credit cards have been the target of many cybercriminals who have designed many malware and phishing schemes to steal banking credentials. The numerous threats that have preyed on the traditional credit card payment system, coupled with new technology, has led to the development of different payment processing technologies that not only allow for more convenient transactions, but also ones that are more secured.

Trend Micro Incorporated released its annual security roundup report, “Setting the Stage: Landscape Shifts Dictate Future Threat Response Strategies,” which dissects the most significant security incidents from 2015. Mobile devices continued being hotbeds for cybercriminals looking to exploit security flaws.

Mobile payments may be convenient for people armed with smartphones that support it, especially right now with the arrival of Visa Checkout in Malaysia that allows you to pay easily on across all your devices but the problem with using popular technology is that threats are always sure to follow, the same way they did with cloud computing and the Android platform.

“What both MasterCard and Visa are trying to do here is consolidate the payment activity that they’re doing online so they have a chance to inject a bit of extra security,” says Eric Skinner, Vice President of Solutions Marketing, Trend Micro Inc. “It’s a great opportunity for them to do more fraud protection and reinforce a more controlled checkout process.”

The attack on mobile devices can range from:

  • Forcing a device’s system to go on endless reboot, draining its battery.
  • Rendering Android devices silent and unable to make calls due to unresponsive screens.
  • Exposing a device’s memory content.
  • Giving hackers the ability to replace legitimate apps with malicious versions in order to steal information from the user.

 

Next Gen Payment Technologies

  • EMV Credit Cards – Also called Chip-and-PIN cards, these cards feature a chip that stores a cryptogram that detects modified transactions. It also requires a PIN for extra authentication.
  • Contactless RFID Credit Cards – This payment technology uses passive Radio Frequency Identification that allows cardholders to wave the cards in front of RF terminals to complete transactions.
