AMD Smart Access Memory (Resizable BAR) Guide

Find out what AMD Smart Access Memory is all about, and how to turn it on for a FREE BOOST in performance!

Smart Access Memory : PCIe Resizable BAR for AMD!

Smart Access Memory is AMD’s marketing term for their implementation of the PCI Express Resizable BAR (Base Address Registers) capability.

What does that mean exactly?

CPUs are traditionally limited to a 256 MB I/O memory address region for the GPU frame buffer. This of it as an “data dump” for stuff like textures, shaders and geometry.

Since this “data dump” is limited to 256 MB, the CPU can only send texture, shader and geometry data as and when the GPU requires them.

This introduces some latency – delay from when the GPU requires the data, and the CPU send them.

Turning on Resizable BAR or Smart Access Memory greatly expands the size of that data dump, letting the CPU directly access the GPU’s entire frame buffer memory.

Instead of transferring data when requested by the GPU, the CPU processes and stores the data directly in the graphics memory.

Graphics assets can be transferred to graphics memory in full, instead of in pieces. In addition, multiple transfers can occur simultaneously, instead of being queued up.

While this AMD graphic above suggests that Smart Access Memory will widen the memory path (and thus memory bandwidth) between the CPU and GPU, that is not true.

Smart Access Memory / Resizable BAR will not increase memory bandwidth.

What it does is let the CPU directly access the entire GPU frame buffer memory, instead of using the usual 256 MB “dump”. That reduces latency because the graphics assets are now accessible by the GPU at all times.

AMD Smart Access Memory : Performance Gains

According to AMD, enabling Smart Access Memory will give you a small but free boost of 5% to 11% in gaming performance.

Here is a summary of the test results from our article, RX 6800 XT Smart Access Memory Performance Comparison!

You can expect up to 16% better performance in some games, but no effect in certain games. But overall, you get a free boost in performance. There is simply no reason not to enable Smart Access Memory.

1080p Resolution (1920 x 1080)

1440p Resolution (2560 x 1440)

2160p Resolution (3840 x 2160)

AMD Smart Access Memory : Requirements

Since Smart Access Memory is just an AMD implementation of PCI Express Resizable BAR. Therefore, it can be be implemented for all PCI Express 3.0 and PCI Express 4.0 graphics cards and motherboards.

However, AMD is currently limiting it to a small subset of components, having validated it only for their new Ryzen 5000 series CPUs, select Ryzen 3000 Series Processors and Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards.

So this is what you currently require to enable AMD Smart Access Memory :

Hardware

Software

  • AMD Radeon Software Driver 20.11.2 or newer
  • Latest Motherboard BIOS (AMD AGESA 1.1.0.0 or newer)

AMD currently recommends these X570 motherboards, because they have updated BIOS available :

AMD Smart Access Memory : How To Enable It?

If you have all of those supported components above, and updated your motherboard BIOS, you need to manually enable Smart Access Memory.

Now, the method will vary from motherboard to motherboard, and it probably won’t even be called Smart Access Memory.

Instead, look for variations of Above 4G Decoding, or Resizing BAR, or Resizable BAR, or Re-Size BAR Support.

AMD Generic Method

AMD has provided these generic steps to enable Smart Access Memory :

  1. Enter the System BIOS by press <DEL> or <F12> during the system startup.
  2. Navigate to the Advanced Settings or Advanced menu.
  3. Enable “Above 4G Decoding” and “Re-Size BAR Support“.
  4. Save the changes and restart the computer.

Step-by-Step Method For ASUS Crosshair VIII Hero

In our guide, we are using the ASUS CROSSHAIR VIII Hero (AMD X570) motherboard, as an example :

  1. First you will need to turn off CSM (Compatibility Support Module), or make sure it’s disabled.Go to the Boot menu and look for a CSM / Compatibility Support Module option.

  1. Set CSM (Compatibility Support Module) to Disabled.

  1. Go to the Advanced menu and look for the PCI Subsystem. In other motherboards, look for PCIe / PCI Express configuration options.

  1. Enable Above 4G Decoding.

  1. This will give you access to the Re-Size BAR Support option. Set it to Auto.

  1. Now go to the Exit menu, and select Save Changes & Reset.

  1. It will ask you to confirm the changes. Just verify both, and click OK.

After the motherboard reboots, AMD Smart Access Memory (PCIe Resizable BAR) will be enabled for your Ryzen 5000 series CPU and Radeon RX 6000 series graphics card!

CSM Warning For GIGABYTE AORUS X570 Master

AMD currently recommends these X570 motherboards, because they have updated BIOS available :

CSM is disabled by default for the ASUS, ASRock and MSI motherboards. However, it is enabled by default in the GIGABYTE AORUS X570 Master.

If you installed Windows without first turning CSM off, it will be configured as non-UEFI. It will NOT boot if you enable Resizable BAR Support (Smart Access Memory).

You will need to reinstall Windows with CSM support disabled.

AMD SmartShift Explained : Smart Power Distribution FTW!

At CES 2020, AMD announced their SmartShift technology that debuts in the Ryzen 4000 Mobile processors.

What is AMD SmartShift, and how does it work? Let’s find out!

AMD SmartShift : What Is It?

AMD SmartShift is a new technology that is being introduced with the new AMD Ryzen 4000 Mobile processor family.

It can be simply described as a smart power distribution technique, to dynamically improve CPU or GPU performance with a limited power budget.

How Does AMD SmartShift Work?

In a typical laptop, the CPU and GPU each have their own pre-defined power budget.

The CPU and GPU will individually adjust their power consumption according to the load, using less power for a longer battery life, but never exceeding their power budget even when there is a need for more performance.

AMD SmartShift changes that by simply doing away with the pre-defined power budget, and using a shared power budget instead.

When you are running CPU-intensive tasks, it lets the Ryzen CPU take up more of the power budget, improving its performance.

But when you start up a game, AMD SmartShift lets the Radeon GPU take up more of the power budget, for better gaming performance.

Ultimately, SmartShift lets you squeeze out more performance from the CPU and GPU for a limited power budget.

The Performance Impact

According to AMD, SmartShift will deliver up to 10% better gaming performance, and up to 12% better content creation performance.

This was based on their internal tests using the AMD Ryzen 4800H mobile processor, coupled with the AMD Radeon RX 5600M GPU.

AMD SmartShift : How To Get It

AMD SmartShift is built into the new AMD Ryzen 4000 Mobile processor family, but also requires the laptop to have a separate AMD Radeon Graphics GPU.

It also works only with the recently-launched AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition driver.

  1. Red Dead Redemption 2 crashes with this error message :

Red Dead Redemption 2 exited unexpectedly

  1. Stuttering or freezing during game play due to CPU maxing out
  2. Sudden drop in frame rate (fps) during game play

Red Dead Redemption 2 PC Solution Guide

Solution #1 : Update Your Graphics Card Driver

As we pointed out in an article we posted earlier, make sure you update your graphics driver :

  • AMD : Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 19.11.1 or newer
  • NVIDIA : GeForce Game Ready Driver 441.12 or newer

Recommended : Red Dead Redemption 2 : Use These AMD + NVIDIA Drivers!

Solution #2 : Disable Antivirus or Add To Whitelist / Exemption List

Antivirus software are apparently causing RDR2 to crash, especially during the intro / shotgun scene.

Either disable your antivirus software temporarily (not really advisable), or add Red Dead Redemption 2 to its whitelist or exemption list.

Solution #3 : Update The Rockstar Games Launcher

Rockstar just issued a v1.09.164 update to fix the many issues this buggy launcher was causing :

  • Close any running Rockstar game
  • Close the Rockstar Games Launcher
  • Restart the Rockstar Games Launcher, and let it update to v1.09.164 or newer

Solution #4 : Logging Out And Back Into Rockstar Games Launcher

The Activation Required error can apparently be solved by simply logging out of the Rockstar Games Launcher, and logging back in again.

Solution #5 : Clear The Rockstar Games Launch Profile Cache

But in certain situations, if logging out and back in again fails, you will need to clear your local profile cache :

  • In Rockstar Games Launcher, go to Settings > Account Information
  • Select Delete Local Profile (This will only delete the local cache. It will not delete your Social Club account or saved games)
  • Select Confirm
  • Sign into the Rockstar Games Launcher again

Solution #6 : Reduce Number Of CPU Cores

Red Dead Redemption 2 is apparently hogging the CPU, causing stuttering or freezing. A temporary workaround has been suggested – reduce the number of CPU cores it can use :

  • Right click on RDR2.exe in Windows Explorer
  • In the drop-down list, select Set Affinity
  • You will a list of available CPU cores. Uncheck one or two cores.

Solution #7 : Switch To DirectX 12

Generally, Vulkan will offer significantly better performance than DirectX 12. Where possible, you should enable Vulkan, instead of DirectX 12.

However, if you notice sudden drops in frame rate, try switching from Vulkan to DirectX 12. This will likely get fixed in a future graphics card driver.

Solution #8 : Lower The Graphics Settings

Rockstar appears to be overly optimistic about the system requirements of RDR2. NVIDIA ran their own benchmarks, and recommended these cards for 60 fps gaming instead :

So, if you are getting low frame rates, reduce the graphics settings. In particular, volumetric graphics and water quality settings.

The AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition Tech Report

AMD has been on a yearly update cycle of Radeon Software, ever since they introduced the first version – Crimson Edition on 2 November 2015. This was followed by the Crimson ReLive Edition on 9 December 2016. On 12 December 2017, they introduced the third iteration – Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition.

In addition to enhanced performance, there are over 30 new or improved features in Adrenalin Edition. So join us for a tour of what’s new and what’s improved in the new AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition!

AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition

The AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition is named after the Adrenalin Rose, not the hormone adrenaline (also known as epinephrine). That’s Adrenalin without the e. The Adrenalin Rose is a rich velvet red rose with long thornless stems and deep green foliage.

Before we go into the details, here is a summary of the new features being introduced in Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition :

Radeon Overlay

Radeon Overlay allows gamers to fine-tune their game experience, and monitor, record and share their gameplay without ever leaving the game. It provides one-click access to Radeon ReLive, Performance Monitoring, Radeon Chill, Frame Rate Target Control (FRTC), Radeon FreeSync and Color settings.

AMD Link Mobile App

The Adrenalin Edition Performance Boost

The Adrenalin Edition is not meant to be a “performance driver update”. In fact, Terry Makedon was amused to read claims that AMD promised big performance update after the Adrenalin Edition name was revealed. That was probably because they mistakenly thought the name was based on the hormone adrenaline…

He clarified that performance optimisation is an on-going concern, with a focus on getting specific optimisations out in time for new game launches. There will be general performance optimisations that will be delivered over the year. But AMD won’t be holding back optimisations just to deliver a major driver update with large performance boost.

With that in mind, this chart does not show a sudden performance boost with Adrenalin Edition. Instead, it shows the cumulative performance gains since the last major release – Crimson ReLive Edition.

They also managed to reduce latency across the board in all DirectX 11 titles.

Borderless Windowed Multi-GPU Support

The Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition introduces a new Borderless Windows Multi-GPU Support, to complement the existing Fullscreen Multi-GPU Support.

Frame Rate Target Control Now Supports Vulkan

Frame Rate Target Control reduces GPU power draw by throttling it to maintain a 60 fps limit. It now supports Vulkan.

[adrotate group=”1″]

Compute Profiles

Compute Profiles was released in an optional update a few weeks ago, and is now part of Adrenalin Edition. The Compute Profile optimises workloads on the GPU to deliver better compute performance for cryptocurrency mining.

In this example, they quoted a 15% boost in Ethereum mining performance with the Compute Profile over the default Gaming Profile on a Radeon RX 570 graphics card.

Radeon Software For Linux

AMD will start offering a single suite containing both open- and closed-source software stacks for Radeon Software. You will be able to choose between the consumer (AMDGPU) or workstation (AMDGPU-PRO) drivers, with the flexibility to mix-and-match open- and closed-source components.

AMD is working to deliver an open-source AMD Vulkan driver for Linux.

Improved Core Radeon Technologies

Radeon WattMan

The Radeon WattMan is the power management tool that doubles as an overclocking / underclocking tool. In Adrenalin Edition, custom GPU profiles can be saved, reloaded at a later point and shared with the Radeon user community

Radeon Chill

Radeon Chill saves power by dynamically regulating the frame rate based on your in-game movements. With Adrenalin Edition, Radeon Chill now supports games based on the Vulkan API, along with DirectX 9, 10, 11, and 12.

In addition, Radeon Chill now supports a lot more games. Radeon Chill used to work on a whitelist concept – it will only support games that have been profiled and tested. Thanks to improved algorithms and other changes, AMD is switching it to a blacklist concept.

With Adrenalin Edition, Radeon Chill will now work with all games. But if AMD discovers that Chill does not work properly with a certain game, it goes into the blacklist so Radeon Chill won’t run on it. Currently, there are no games in the blacklist.

[adrotate group=”1″]

Enhanced Sync

Think of Enhanced Sync as pseudo-FreeSync, minimising screen tearing with non-FreeSync monitors. With Adrenalin Edition, Enhanced Sync is now enabled on all Radeon GCN-based graphics cards, and supports all Vulkan API-based games. They also added support for Multi-GPU and AMD Eyefinity Technology.

Radeon ReLive

Radeon ReLive now has a Connect section, which serves as a control center for your Radeon ReLive video library. In addition to browsing your recorded videos, you can queue and share them on social media.

Radeon ReLive will now allow you to integrate chats from Twitch, Facebook, Mixer, YouTube, Weibo and more, to your game play.

AMD has also reduced the performance impact of Radeon ReLive. Note that these examples are from an AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 graphics card.

With Adrenalin Edition, Radeon ReLive will also supports games based on the Vulkan API.

Radeon ReLive will also come with support for :

  • Borderless Region Capture – allowing you to capture only what you want to share, instead of the entire screen.
  • Chroma Key – allowing you to remove your background in your webcam or video stream
  • AMD Eyefinity Technology – allowing you to capture your game play across multiple monitors
  • separate audio tracks – recording mic audio separately from the game audio, for easier mixing and editing later

Radeon FreeSync & Themes

With Adrenalin Edition, you can now enable or disable Radeon FreeSync on a per-game basis. And Radeon Settings will have three UI theme options – Yellow, Crimson and Blue.
