The HUAWEI Kirin 970 Deep Dive Tech Report

Huawei is pitching their Kirin 970 SoC ahead of the Huawei Mate 10 launch in Munich on 16 October 2017. This will be their first SoC to include a Neural Processing Unit (NPU). What is an NPU? What other advantages will the new Huawei Kirin 970 bring with it? Let’s take a deep dive into the technical details and find out!

Find out just how fast the Huawei Kirin 970 NPU is at performing AI tasks!

The HUAWEI Kirin 970 Deep Dive

Eric Zhou (Huawei Chipset Product Marketing Director) presented this in-depth “deep dive” presentation.

The new Huawei Kirin 970 is an astonishingly small chip. Fabricated on the latest 10 nm process technology, it packs 5.5 million transistors into a square centimeter of silicon. In addition to the NPU, it packs an octa-core processor, and a 12-core GPU with support for LPDDR4X memory.

The Kirin 970 also boasts a slew of improvements in network capabilities like LTE Cat18 for download speeds of up to 1.2 Gbps, with 4×4 MIMO, 5CC carrier aggregation and 256-QAM. It will also support dual 4G SIMs with VoLTE, albeit only one can be used for data at any one time.

Although Huawei is reticent about what apps will actually use the NPU, since it is not an industry-standard implementation (there are none so far). But they revealed that one feature that would use the NPU, and presumably appear in the Huawei Mate 10, is the AI Noise Reduction feature. They promise that it would increase the voice recognition rate from 80% to 92% even with background car noise.

[adrotate group=”1″]

Better Motion Capture

In the photography department, the Huawei Kirin 970 improves the camera response time, auto-focus capability and motion detection speed for better motion capture. It also promises improved noise reduction for low light photography. On the audio front, the Kirin 970 will have a full 32-bit @ 384K audio path for high-definition audio capability.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided 100% + 2.9%
Battlefield 1 100% + 1.7%
Hitman 100% + 19.2%

The Threadripper Game Mode

Games are mostly optimised for quad-core processors… and rarely make use of octa-core processors. In fact, having even more cores can result in poorer performance due to poor thread scheduling. In some cases, the game may not even run at all.

To avoid those problems, AMD developer the Threadripper Game Mode. You can switch from the default “Creator Mode” to the “Game Mode” in the AMD Ryzen Master utility. Switching to Game Mode changes the Threadripper processor in two ways :

[adrotate group=”2″]
  • It temporarily disables half the CPU cores, turning the Threadripper 1950X (Lowest Price) into an 8C 16T processor like the AMD Ryzen 1800X, and the Threadripper 1920X (Lowest Price) into an 6C 12T processor like the AMD Ryzen 1600X.
  • It tells the operating system to use a Local Mode (NUMA) memory, which keeps the game and its memory footprint inside one CPU die and the locally-connected DRAM memory. This minimises several key latency points in the system, which will improve gaming performance.

Once you are done playing your game, you can switch back to Creator Mode to make full use of all of the Threadripper’s cores.

Let’s take a look at the performance difference between the Creator Mode and the Game Mode.

As you can see, the Game Mode improves the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X’s gaming performance by 10% to 38%. It’s likely that disabling half the cores also allow the Threadripper to clock them higher, as there is now a much higher thermal headroom.

Joe Macri : The Disruptive Nature of AMD Ryzen

Last week, AMD Corporate Vice President, Product Chief Technology Officer and Corporate Fellow, Joe Macri, flew in to brief us on the disruptive nature of the new AMD Ryzen processors. Join us for his full tech briefing!

If you are wondering why Adam Kozak, Radeon Product Marketing Manager (far left), is here as well, check out his presentation on the AMD Radeon RX 500 Series graphics cards! 😀

The Disruptive Nature of Ryzen

Joe Macri’s presentation is actually titled “The New Era“, but we think it more accurately describes the disruptive nature of the new Ryzen processors. Not only has the Ryzen proven to be a real winner, it has also fired up interest in desktop computing that has never been seen in many years hence.

Here are the key takeaway points :

  • Moore’s law has slowed down, so the industry is evolving to “Moore’s Law+” with new process technology, microarchitecture, integration technology and software.
  • Despite the increase in computing power, we are still far from achieving 1000 TFLOPS required to achieve full presence capability.
  • The AMD Zen core delivers an increase in IPC (instructions per clock) of more than 52% over the previous microarchitecture.[adrotate banner=”4″]
  • The AMD Zen core also delivers 10% better area efficiency than the 7th Generation Intel Core processor (codenamed Kaby Lake).
  • The AMD Zen core delivers 270% better Cinebench multi-core performance / watt over its predecessor.
  • AMD has design teams working on the Zen 2 and Zen 3 cores, just as they have teams working on the Navi GPU that will come after this year’s Vega GPU.
  • AMD is focused on open solutions for heterogenous computing, like the HSA Foundation, Radeon Open Compute (ROCm) and the open interconnect standards.

The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 (9365) Laptop

Introducing the new Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 (9365) laptop, and its key features, was Christopher Choong, Field Marketing Manager, Client Solutions Group, Dell Malaysia.

We had some time to try out the new Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 (9365) laptop. Here is our hands-on preview!

Here are some of its key features :

Incredibly Mobile

The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 (9365) laptop is the world’s smallest 13″ laptop. Thanks to its fan-less design, and use of a Type C USB port for power, it has an incredibly slim (8-13.7 mm) form factor. The hinge rotates 360°, allowing you to use it in four different modes – tablet, tent, laptop and stand.

Tough & Reliable

The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 (9365) laptop is built with laser-cut aluminium and carbon fiber, with Gorilla Glass 4 protection for the display. Its steel hinges have been tested to last at least 20,000 rotations. It is also backed by the legendary Dell Premium Support with Accidental Damage.

Amazing Display

The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 (9365) laptop comes with an UltraSharp touch display with a QHD+ resolution of 3200 x 1800, a pixel density of 276 ppi, and a wide 170° viewing angle. Dell calls it InfinityEdge, because of its extremely thin bezel. It has a maximum brightness of 400 nots, and a colour gamut of 72%, with a contrast ratio of 1000:1.

Rami Ismail : How To Survive Developing Your First Game

Rami Ismail is the co-founder of the Dutch indie game developer, Vlambeer. They are famous for developing Serious Sam: The Random Encounter, Ridiculous Fishing, Super Crate Box and more recently, Nuclear Throne.

Rami is famous for speaking out against game cloning, and his insights on succeeding as an indie game developer. It was to the great delight of everyone attending Level Up KL 2016 that he was one of the guest speakers.

How To Survive Developing Your First Game

You may have seen the talk Rami Ismail is most famous for – You Don’t Stand A Chance. Well, this is an updated version of that talk, with more focus on how to actually survive developing your first game as an indie game developer.

If you are a budding game developer, or someone who is planning to develop games for a living, you must absolutely watch the entire presentation. Learn from the mistakes Rami Ismail and his partner, Jan Willem Nijman made, and find out how Vlambeer succeeded when so many others failed.

Here are the key takeaway points :

1. The large majority of indie game studios do not survive their first game.

2. That does not mean you should not try. It just means you should understand that you’re probably going to fail.

3. Tens of thousands of people are making games today. Only a few can make a living.

4. You only hear about the success stories because of survivorship bias. Many successful developers actually fail countless times.

5. So prepare for failure, create for success and try building a space around your own work.

6. Possible failure points include

  • Your budget is too small, or you don’t plan for one at all!
  • Your team is too big.
  • Your game is too big.
  • Your game’s pitch sucks.
  • Your game’s design sucks.
  • Your business case sucks.
  • Your game’s art sucks.
  • Your game’s audio sucks.
  • Your marketing sucks.
  • Your self-care sucks.
  • Your communication sucks.
  • You don’t think enough.
  • You don’t follow news.
  • You don’t appreciate your competition.

7. Your first try probably won’t work, and that’s fine. Take small steps. Build your failures into a success.
