2021 Samsung TV First Look : What Could They Reveal?

Samsung is slated to reveal their 2021 range of TV models at CES, but ahead of that, they are going to give everyone a sneak peek of sorts!

Could it be MicroLED (again)? Or Quantum Dot OLED (QD-OLED)? Tell us what YOU think!

2021 Samsung TV First Look : What Could They Reveal?

Samsung is slated to launch their 2021 range of TV models at CES 2021, with a press conference at 9 AM on 11 January 2021.

However, it looks like they will give us all a sneak peek of their new VD (Visual Display) technology on 7 January 2021 at 12 AM (GMT+8) here in Malaysia.

The global unveiling will be streamed online at the official Samsung website.

2021 Samsung TV First Look : MicroLED or QD Display?

Although Samsung isn’t telling us what they will showcase in the 7 January 2021 First Look, we believe it will be their MicroLED TV technology.

It first debuted in the 2019 The Wall – which won the 2019 Display of the Year Award. But this is a freaking expensive TV that is virtually a technology demo with a very niche market.

We believe that Samsung will “unveil” MicroLED as the new mainstream display technology for home entertainment enthusiasts to aspire to.

Unlike current LED TVs, a MicroLED TV will have a panel that uses microscopic LEDs as display pixels. This would allow for phenomenally high brightness and infinite contrast, with very wide colour gamut.

Samsung also claims that their new MicroLED technology can last for up to 100,000 hours.

They actually launched a new 110-inch MicroLED TV in South Korean on 10 December 2020, which they plan to launch globally in Q1 2021.

Priced at KRW 170 million (about US$157,000 / £115,000 / RM629,000), it has a 4K resolution with a built-in Majestic Sound System and a 5.1-channel speaker system.

On the other hand, Samsung may be unveiling their QD-OLED display – a hybrid of OLED and Quantum Dots, which they plan to start producing this year.

Samsung Display will invest 13.1 trillion won by 2025 to build “Q1 Line,” the world’s first QD display mass production line at Asan Campus. The new line is scheduled to start production in 2021 with an initial 30,000 sheets (8.5 generations) and will produce a huge QD display of 65 inches or larger.

This QD-OLED hybrid display would deliver higher brightness and wider colour gamuts, with incredible contrast ratios.

Best of all – it will be easier to manufacture, which means lower production costs, and lower prices for consumers.

On the other hand, Samsung is only kicking off QD-OLED manufacturing this year… which means this may not be ready for primetime yet.

So what do YOU think? Will Samsung be unveiling MicroLED or QD-OLED on 7 January 2021?

LG Dual Screen Smartphone Technology Explained!

LG has now introduced two Dual Screen smartphones – the LG V50 ThinQ and the LG G8X ThinQ.

In this article, we will dive into their Dual Screen technology, and look at the good, the bad and the ugly side of it!

LG Dual Screen Technology

Foldable displays are a great way to differentiate smartphones from their rivals. But the HUAWEI Mate X and Samsung Galaxy Fold have shown, they are difficult to develop and manufacture.

Unwilling to spend money to develop their own foldable display, LG chose to develop Dual Screen devices instead.

While not as sexy as foldable displays, they are inherently much cheaper and easier to develop and manufacture.

That’s why the first model is out now, with a second model on the way, even while the HUAWEI Mate X and Samsung Galaxy Fold have been delayed for months now.

LG V50 Dual Screen

First introduced in the LG V50 ThinQ 5G, it basically involves attaching a Dual Screen case (which has a second display) to an ordinary LG V50 smartphone.

The Dual Screen case has a second display on the inner side of its front cover. It uses a three-pin POGO connector to deliver power and data to this display.

The two displays have different characteristics which we have summarised in this table :

Specifications LG V50 ThinQ Display LG Dual Screen Display
Size 6.4-inch 6.2-inch
Panel Type OLED OLED
Resolution Quad HD+
1440 x 3120 pixels
Full HD+
1080 x 2160 pixels
Pixel Density 538 pixels per inch 390 pixels per inch

The hinge design not only separates the two display by about ¼ inch, it cannot fully open so the two displays cannot lay flat.

LG G8X Dual Screen

At IFA 2019, LG unveiled their second Dual Screen device – the LG G8X ThinQ.

It incorporates a number of improvements over the LG V50, including using the same display… right down to the notch!

Specifications LG G8X ThinQ Display LG Dual Screen Display
Size 6.4-inch 6.4-inch
Panel Type OLED OLED
Resolution Full HD+
1080 x 2340 pixels
Full HD+
1080 x 2340 pixels
Pixel Density 403 pixels per inch 403 pixels per inch

Instead of a 3-pin POGO connector, the G8X uses the USB-C port to communicate with its Dual Screen case.

[adrotate group=”1″]

Dual Screen = Separate Displays

The way LG designed it, the two displays are functionally and logically separate displays.

This means it is not possible to stretch an app across both displays… except for a singular exception – the NAVER Whale browser.

It does not help that the two displays are separated by a hinge that is about ¼ inch wide, and hinge design itself prevents the two displays from laying flat.

Four 2019 Sony TV Technologies Explained + Demonstrated!

At the recent 2019 Sony BRAVIA OLED + LED TV Showcase, Sony explained and demonstrated four new 2019 Sony TV technologies, as well as a new 2-way stand for the Sony BRAVIA A8G OLED TV.

Let’s take a look at those four new 2019 Sony TV technologies, and find out how they will impact your viewing experience!

The Four 2019 Sony TV Technologies Explained + Demonstrated!

Let’s take a look at the four 2019 Sony TV technologies that are being introduced in their latest range of OLED and LED TVs.

Acoustic Surface Audio+

The Acoustic Surface Audio+ technology will debut in their latest BRAVIA A9G 4K HDR OLED TV. In addition to two actuators vibrating the TV panel to create sound, it uses two subwoofers to add bass, and a spatial effect.

Together, they deliver a multi-dimensional soundscape that envelopes you, the viewer, for a more immersive viewing experience.

Acoustic Surface Audio+ also introduces a TV Center Speaker Mode, which turns the A9G‘s display into a giant centre speaker, to complement your external speaker setup. This will allow for greater clarity of dialogue, vocals and instruments in any movie or performance you watch.

Pixel Contrast Booster

Pixel Contrast Booster is designed to maximise the OLED panel’s contrast throughout the colour spectrum (instead of just grey tones).

It accomplishes this by analysing each frame and applying the suitable signal enhancements, with feedback from the panel.

X-Motion Clarity

X-Motion Clarity keeps objects looking sharp, bright and clear, even in motion. Each ‘backlight blink’ is individually controlled and its duration optimised, while brightness is boosted when needed.

This is made possible by the 2019 Sony TV range’s full array backlight system, with local dimming capability.

X-Wide Angle

X-Wide Angle is designed to make sure the brightness and colour of an image remain the same at any viewing angle, so that everyone has the best view, no matter how they are positioned in relation to the TV.

Sony accomplished this by optimising the optical panel structure and signal processing to control the direction of light emitted by the backlight.

Extra : New BRAVIA A8G 2-Way Stand

The new Sony BRAVIA A8G features a new 2-way stand design, which can be inverted to support the placement of a sound bar! Check it out!

The HUAWEI P30 Pro vs HUAWEI P30 Comparison Guide!

Now that HUAWEI introduced the P30 Pro and the P30, you may be wondering – how different are they? To make it easy for you, we prepared this P30 Pro vs. P30 comparison guide!

HUAWEI P30 Pro vs P30 Comparison – Features

Display

The HUAWEI P30 Pro has a larger 6.47-inch curved OLED display. The P30, on the other hand, has a smaller 6.1-inch flat OLED display.

Because their display panels have the same display resolutions, this means the larger P30 Pro display has a slightly lower pixel density than the smaller P30 display.

Rear Cameras

The HUAWEI P30 Pro features a new Leica quad-camera system, made up of :

  • a 40 MP main camera with a super-bright f/1.6 aperture,
  • 20 MP ultra-wide angle camera with f/2.2 aperture,
  • an 8 MP SuperZoom telephoto camera with f/2.4 aperture, and
  • a Time-of-Flight (ToF) camera.

The P30 Pro’s SuperZoom telephoto camera supports 5X optical zoom, 10X hybrid zoom and 50X digital zoom.

Recommended : HUAWEI P30 Pro Super Zoom Preview @ Blue Concert!

The HUAWEI P30, on the other hand, has a Leica triple camera system, made up of :

  • a 40 MP main camera with f/1.8 aperture,
  • a 16 MP ultra-wide angle camera with f/2.2 aperture, and
  • an 8 MP telephoto camera with f/2.4 aperture.

Its telephoto camera supports 3X optical zoom, 5X hybrid zoom and 10X digital zoom.

ToF Camera vs Laser Auto-Focus

The P30 Pro has a Time of Flight (ToF) camera, which does not actually take any photos. It creates a 3D map of objects and their distances using pulses of invisible near infra-red light.

The P30 does not have the ToF camera, and uses a laser auto-focus system instead.

SuperSpectrum Sensor ISO Rating

Both models use the 1/1.7-inch 40 MP SuperSpectrum sensor, which uses a new RYYB filter to extend its ISO rating.

However, the P30 Pro supports up to ISO 409,600, while the P30 will only support up to ISO 204,800.

Acoustic Display Technology

This is a similar technology to Sony Acoustic Surface Audio, where actuators vibrate the display to produce sound.

Only the P30 Pro comes with this feature, replacing the lower speaker with the acoustic display. The P30 comes with two regular speakers.

SuperCool Technology

Both models will feature HUAWEI SuperCool technology to keep the Kirin 980 cool, even during long gaming sessions.

However, only the P30 Pro will use both graphene film and a heat pipe to quickly conduct and shift heat away from the CPU and GPU. The P30, on the other hand, will only use graphene film.

Storage

In certain countries, the P30 comes with just 64 GB of storage. The P30 is available in two other storage capacities – 128 GB and 256 GB.

The minimum storage capacity for the P30 Pro, on the other hand, is 128 GB, with options for 256 GB and 512 GB of storage.

Both models support additional storage via HUAWEI’s NM card, instead of microSD cards.

Dust + Water Resistance

The P30 Pro is IP68-rated, which means it is sealed against dust and can be immersed in over 1 meter of water for at least 30 minutes.

The regular P30 is just splash-resistant, with an IP53 rating. It should withstand water sprayed on it (e.g. rain) for up to 5 minutes.

Battery + Recharging

The HUAWEI P30 Pro comes with a larger 4,200 mAh battery and supports 40 W SuperCharge 2.0, as well as 15 W Wireless QuickCharge.

The regular P30, on the other hand, has a 3,650 mAh battery and only supports 22.5 W SuperCharge. It does not support wireless charging.

Size + Weight

The P30 Pro is naturally larger and heavier than the P30. It is slightly wider by 2 mm and very slightly thicker by 0.8 mm, but almost 9 mm taller and weighs 27 grams more.

The Sony BRAVIA A9G Key Features

Picture Processor X1 Ultimate

Picture Processor X1 Ultimate is a new, faster processor that adds Object-based Super Resolution to the features of the previous-generation 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme. It can detect hundreds of different objects on screen and intelligently enhances brightness, detail and colour.

Acoustic Surface Audio+

The Sony BRAVIA A9G has two actuators that vibrate the panel to create the audio output. Together with its two powerful subwoofers, it can create a multi-dimensional soundscape.

TV Center Speaker Mode

If you have a multi-speaker setup, you can set the Sony BRAVIA A9G to function like a centre speaker!

Cinematic Experience

The Sony BRAVIA A9G supports Dolby Vision HDR capability, as well as Dolby Atmos for immersive surround sound. It also comes with a Netflix Calibrated Mode to ensure you will enjoy Neflix originals the way they were meant to be!

Object-based Super Resolution

Object-based Super Resolution technology detects individual objects in a picture and individually enhance their resolution to add or preserve detail.

Object-based HDR Remaster

Object-based HDR Remaster analyses the colour of individual objects and dynamically adjusts the contrast. This is superior to the usual method of adjusting along a black-to-white contrast curve.

Super Bit Mapping HDR

Super Bit Mapping HDR reveals brings out the gradations of the light in a picture, creating a smooth, natural image without the “banding” that can occur in other TVs.

Dual Database Processing

The Sony BRAVIA A9G has two image improvement databases, with thousands of references. One database is used to clean the picture and reduce on-screen noise. The other database is used to upscale the resolution to improve clarity.

Motionflow XR

The Motionflow XR technology creates and inserts extra frames between the original ones. It compares key visual factors on successive frames, then calculates the split second of missing action in the sequences.

Sony BRAVIA A9G Price + Availability

The Sony BRAVIA A9G OLED TVs are scheduled to hit the market in the second quarter of 2019. Their prices will be announced later.

The Sony A9F MASTER Series

The Sony A9F is part of the MASTER Series  – a title Sony reserves exclusively for its highest picture quality TV models. Sony claims the MASTER Series provides picture quality approaching that of a professional-grade monitor in a motion picture production studio.

Having developed and followed a very strict set of product evaluation criteria by its most experienced picture quality engineers, Sony is confident that their flagship MASTER Series will deliver the highest quality picture possible in a home setting.

Picture Processor X1 Ultimate

The Sony A9F MASTER Series models come equipped with a newly-developed, next-generation Picture Processor X1 Ultimate. This processor can intelligently detect and analyse each object in the picture through Sony’s new Object-based Super Resolution for exceptional accuracy and detail.

The Object-based HDR remaster has also been updated, and now allows each object to be remastered individually for better depth, accurate texture and all-in-all more realistic picture.

Netflix-Calibrated Mode

In conjunction with Netflix, Sony is now introducing Netflix Calibrated Mode. This unique feature was specially developed to mirror the same picture quality as a studio evaluation master for television in order to preserve the artists’ creative vision and intent.

By accessing one simple menu setting, Netflix Calibrated Mode faithfully reproduces the visuals that help bring a story to life, and entertainment enthusiasts can now enjoy this experience when watching their favorite TV series, films, documentaries and more on Netflix.

CalMAN-Ready

The Sony A9F MASTER Series is ready for CalMAN, the industry-leading display calibration software from Portrait Displays. CalMAN is widely used by professionals as a tool to ensure quality control of the strict requirements demanded by content creators in broadcast, production, and post-production.

This features the CalMAN calibration software to be installed on a PC, a pattern generator, a colorimeter or spectrophotometer, and the CalMAN for BRAVIA app installed. But using it eliminates the struggle of maintaining the picture quality throughout the life of the TV.

Pixel Contrast Booster

The Sony A9F MASTER Series TV comes with the Pixel Contrast Booster, which is Sony’s original panel controller for OLED. It maximises the dynamic range by widening the area of color reproduction at high brightness. Pictures are enhanced with extra detail and texture.

Acoustic Surface Audio+

The Sony A9F TV boasts the new Acoustic Surface Audio+ technology.

[adrotate group=”2″]

Acoustic Surface was first introduced last year with the Sony A1 series followed by the Sony A8F this year. The improved Acoustic Surface Audio+ gets an additional actuator in the center of the screen and an extra subwoofer channel, which delivers  a 3.2 channel sound system.

The additional center actuator acts just like center speakers hidden behind an AT (acoustically transparent) screen which are found in movie theaters. With the three actuators and two subwoofers facing sideways, the Sony A9F creates a rich sound field that greatly enhances the viewing experience.

The Sony A9F asp has a TV Center Speaker Mode that allows the Acoustic Surface Audio+ to be used as the center speaker of a home theater system.

OLED FullVision Display In Next LG Flagship Smartphone!

SEOUL, 4 August 2017 – The next flagship smartphone from LG Electronics (LG) will be the first ever device to feature an OLED FullVision display, consistent with the company’s strategy that started with the LG G6 and continues with the LG Q6.

The LG OLED FullVision Technology

The OLED FullVision technology gives the upcoming phone best-in-class images and sets a new standard in mobile displays. While the immersive LCD FullVision display was first introduced in the LG G6 earlier this year, the display in the company’s upcoming flagship device will be its first OLED smartphone since the LG Flex 2 in 2015.

The shift marks a move by LG to extend its OLED leadership from the premium TV sector into the premium smartphone space. Beyond their slim profile and excellent visuals, OLED displays in smartphones are ideal for VR applications, one of the key growth areas in the smartphone industry.

With consumers seeking bigger displays but eschewing larger phones that are uncomfortable to hold in one hand, LG’s FullVision display is a key contributor in the trend toward minimized bezels in smartphones. OLED was simply the next evolution for FullVision displays, delivering incredible quality, vividness and clarity to smartphone visuals.

At six inches, the OLED FullVision display will be LG’s largest in four years while the actual body will be smaller than last year’s LG V20. To maximize viewable screen space, the LG logo has been removed from the bottom of the display with the upper and lower bezels reduced by 20 and 50 percent, respectively, compared the V20.

The FullVision display’s immersive and expansive visual experience is enhanced on the 4.15 million pixels of the QHD+ (1440 x 2880) OLED screen. Superb image quality is achieved via emissive OLED technology which reproduces perfect black and colors with greater accuracy and across a wider color spectrum than conventional LCD displays. By implementing optimal image algorithms gleaned from years of OLED R&D, visuals on this OLED display deliver 148 percent of sRGB 1 color space for pictures and internet images and 109 percent of DCI-P3 2 color space for digital cinema.

[adrotate group=”2″]

Another intrinsic advantage of OLED technology is operational response time that is ten times faster than LCD. This accelerated response time effectively eliminates afterimages, an important consideration for action movies and VR. And with support for HDR10, watching compatible movies and videos on this display offers a whole new eye-opening experience.

And because the screen in the upcoming smartphone will be based on plastic OLED – otherwise known as P-OLED – technology, the edges can be curved to allow for a more ergonomic design and a better feel in the hand. P-OLED is created by placing pixels on a plastic substrate which is much stronger than a glass base.

What’s more, the display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 that incorporates shatter-resistant technology. Most importantly, using advanced encapsulation and pixel-scanning technology, the P-OLED in this upcoming device is free from the burn-in issue that plagued past OLED screens. Encapsulation prevents the oxidation of pixels and lower energy is applied to each pixel via LG’s pixel-scanning technology, which has the added benefit of saving battery power.

The LG OLED TV Discussion – Evolution of TV Technology

We were recently invited to the LG OLED TV discussion panel on the evolution of TV display technology. Hosted by Jeff Sandhu from BFM Radio, it featured Malaysian digital filmmaker James Lee, and Professor Dr. Ahmad Sabirin, from Universiti Technologi Mara (UiTM).

In this article, you will learn from Professor Dr. Ahmad Sabirin about the evolution of TV display technology, while James Lee reveals how the new display technologies, like LG OLED, allows him to better convey his artistic vision to his audiences. This panel discussion is a must-watch if you are looking to buy a new TV but can’t differentiate OLED from QLED, quantum dot, LCD and even plasma TV.

The LG OLED TV Discussion – Evolution of TV Technology

In this LG OLED TV discussion panel, Malaysian digital filmmaker James Lee, and Professor Dr. Ahmad Sabirin, from Universiti Technologi Mara (UiTM). will shed light on the following topics :

  • Understanding the science behind TV displays, and their evolution through history
  • Behind the scenes in film production: Coping with consumer demands and content display technology
  • The creation of organic light-emitting display (OLED) from a history of LEDs and LCDs

During the early 2000s, flat panel TV displays consisted mostly of LCD or LED display technologies which make use of a backlight to illuminate the images. The backlight not only increases the thickness of the display panel, they also consume a significant amount of power. The use of a backlight also introduces issues like light bleeding from the edges, and the inability to create truly deep blacks.

Today, there is a new generation of display panels called OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) displays. These OLED display panel uses thin films of self-lighting organic molecules that switches on and off. This enables the delivery of Perfect Black, allowing for a much improved contrast ratio, sharper images and more vibrant colours.

LG webOS 3.5 Smart TV Earns Common Criteria Certification

11 May 2017 — The LG webOS 3.5 smart TV platform was recognized with a Common Criteria (CC) certification for its enhanced Application Security Solution Version 1.0 software.

By snagging another internationally-recognized security certification, LG continues to demonstrate that its smart TVs are among the strongest when it comes to smart TV security. The recognition comes at a time when consumers are increasingly concerned about the potential of privacy breaches on their Internet-connected devices.

Security Manager, the webOS 3.5 security software module, was tested in accordance with Common Criteria’s rigid benchmarks. CC’s internationally-recognized ISO/IEC 15408 standards are used by governments, banks, and other organizations to assess the security capabilities of individual products including 27 member countries from around the world including Australia, France, Japan, Korea and the United States.

The test examined three phases of smart TV security: application installation protection, application execution protection and application content protection with digital rights management (DRM) encryption.

LG webOS 3.5 Smart TV

LG webOS 3.5 provides excellent application installation protection and blocks the installation of unauthorized apps by conducting a rigorous digital signature verification process.

[adrotate banner=”4″]

The LG App Store server oversees the digital signature generation process to ensure that webOS 3.5 installs applications downloaded only from the LG App Store. LG webOS 3.5 also delivers protection depending on the type of application – platform apps (also known as native apps) or web apps.

For native apps, webOS 3.5 implements sandboxing technology according to each application’s security attributes to block access to unauthorized system directories/files, device files and other data. LG webOS 3.5 allows web applications to use only approved application programming interfaces (API) to prevent these web apps from directly accessing sensitive information in the file system.

In addition, the latest webOS offers a powerful DRM license verification process designed to decrypt the encrypted content inside RAM (random-access memory) and to create a clean backup of encrypted content in flash memory.

The Samsung QLED TV Technology Explained

Samsung revealed their new QLED TVs at Samsung Forum 2017. They also showcased the advantages of the Samsung QLED TV technology. Join us for a quick look at the Samsung QLED TV technology, and find out why Samsung thinks it represents a quantum leap in TV technology.

What Is QLED?

QLED is Samsung’s brand of quantum dot displays. Despite the similarity in name, these are not a newer version of the OLED (organic LED) technology used in some TVs and many smartphones. Rather, quantum dot and QLED displays are “regular” LCD TVs enhanced with quantum dots.

For a quick, consumer-friendly summary of QLED technology, we have Jason Foo, Head of Samsung Malaysia’s AV Business Unit, to thank! 😀

Why Is QLED Better Than OLED?

Quantum dots are microscopic particles that very efficiently converts the light from the LED backlight into very specific colours. This ability to generate purer red and green light using a blue LED backlight allows QLED TVs to deliver a brighter display with a wider colour gamut.

Samsung quotes their new QLED TVs with maximum brightness levels of 1,500 to 2,000 nits, and the ability to reproduce 100% of the DCI-P3 colour space. Compare that to OLED TVs that can only deliver 400-500 nits, and about 70% of the DCI-P3 colour space.

In this video, we will show you the new Samsung QLED TV compared to a competitor’s OLED TV in three aspects – colour gamut, contrast ratio and viewing angle.

The quantum dot technology does not affect the QLED TV’s viewing angle. However, it appears that Samsung made some changes to the subpixel arrangement of the new QLED TVs, so that they have much better viewing angles. That’s why the comparison above shows a superior viewing angle – the traditional advantage of OLED displays.

What’s New About QLED?

You may recall that Samsung had already introduced quantum dot displays in their 2016 SUHD TVs. Their 2017 QLED TVs though, boasts a new “alloy quantum dot technology”.

They basically coated an InP (indium phosphide) core with an inner ZnSe (zinc selenide) shell, followed by a ZnS (zinc sulfide) outer shell, creating an alloyed InP/ZnSeS quantum dot.

These alloy quantum dots are more efficient in converting the light of the backlight unit (BLU) into specific colours required by the display. Because they are zinc-based, they are also far less toxic than cadmium-based quantum dot displays.

HDR Capability

HDR was not mentioned at all in Samsung Forum 2017, but it is an important feature for those intending to invest in a new TV.

3D TV is dead, and the new killer feature is HDR (High Dynamic Range). The industry is fast moving towards HDR displays and content. The term is catchy, readily understood by the masses, and most importantly – can be easily demonstrated to all.

[adrotate banner=”4″]

The 2017 Samsung QLED TVs all support HDR, but only in one format – HDR10. Samsung is focusing on HDR10 for 3 reasons :

  • it is an open standard, as opposed to Dolby Vision.
  • it is the basis for the 4K UHD Blu-ray HDR specifications
  • the vast majority of movies today are designed for 1,000 nits displays (that HDR10 supports), instead of 4,000 nits displays (that Dolby Vision supports)

Internet wars aside, the shift to HDR displays and content is just beginning. By the time HDR is ubiquitous many, many years down the road, perhaps we will have the 4,000 nits displays to justify a requirement for Dolby Vision.

Killer Features In 2016 MacBook Pro Models Confirmed

Apple is gearing up for a refresh of their 13″ and 15″ MacBook Pro models in Q4 of 2016, probably around September. In addition to the usual processor and graphics upgrades, Apple is looking to inject a little pizazz in the 2016 MacBook Pro models.

We have just confirmed with an internal Apple source, who has direct or working contact with the upcoming 2016 MacBook Pro models, that they will definitely come with two killer features – an OLED display touch bar, and a Touch ID fingerprint sensor.

OLED Display Touch Bar

The OLED display touch bar will run along the top of the keyboard, replacing the physical function keys. It will have full colour capability, and will be fully customisable by the user. Amongst other things, users can add a “Do Not Disturb” button, or switch it to a dark “Night Mode” colour scheme.

Our source will not (currently) send us pictures of the actual OLED display touch bar, but designer Martin Hajek came up with concept renderings of what he thinks the OLED display touch bar could look like. Check them out :

[adrotate banner=”5″]

Touch ID Fingerprint Sensor

The 2016 MacBook Pro models will also come with a Touch ID fingerprint sensor. This will be used not just for user authentication, it will also be used to authorise payments via Apple Pay.

Our source is currently unwilling to share any additional details, or pictures, of the Touch ID fingerprint sensors. However, TheAlienPebble proposed that the entire glass trackpad may serve as a giant Touch ID sensor.

This would cost a lot more than a small sensor, but it would allow for multi-finger authentication, and active user authentication.

Multi-finger authentication would allow for much better security. You can use a combination of multiple fingers, to add an additional layer of complexity. Yet it is a simple concept to grasp and use all the time.

The same goes for active user authentication. With the entire touchpad functioning as a giant biometric sensor, the 2016 MacBook Pro can lock itself down if it detects someone other than the authorised (and logged-in) user using the touchpad.

What Else Is New In The 2016 MacBook Pro?

[adrotate banner=”4″]

The “less sexy” upgrades that we are looking forward to in the 2016 MacBook Pro models include :

  • faster 7th Generation Intel Core (Kaby Lake) processor options
  • faster Intel Iris Graphics or NVIDIA GeForce GPU options
  • new metal injection-moulded hinges
  • USB 3.1 Type C and Thunderbolt 3 ports
  • slimmer and lighter chassis
