The GALAX GeForce GTX 1660 Super (1-Click OC)

GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER cards are only be available from NVIDIA board partners as custom cards, without a Founders Edition reference design.

One of the first examples is the GALAX GeForce GTX 1660 Super (1-Click OC), and we managed to get our grubby hands on an early sample!

The GALAX GeForce GTX 1660 Super hews quite close to the reference specifications, with one exception.

It has a 15 MHz higher boost clock out-of-the-box, with a further 15 MHz enabled by its 1-Click OC feature. This gives it a maximum boost clock of 1815 MHz.

Here is a table comparing the GALAX GeForce GTX 1660 Super, with the reference GTX 1660 SUPER, the GTX 1660 Ti and the regular GTX 1660.

GALAX GTX 1660 Super : Display Ports

The GALAX GeForce GTX 1660 Super offers three display ports. From left to right, they are :

  • DisplayPort 1.4
  • HDMI 2.0b with HDCP 2.2 support
  • DVI-D

Technically, this allows it to display out to a maximum of three monitors, but it might not be practical in real life.

It is, in particular, difficult to do so for three similar monitors, because they would have to support three different ports!

Incidentally, the cooling vents above the display ports are purely decorative. Not only are the heatsink fins aligned in parallel, the cooler shroud actually blocks hot air from exiting through these vents.

GALAX GTX 1660 Super : RGB Heatpipe Cooler

The GALAX GeForce GTX 1660 Super is kept cool by an aluminium heatsink, with four copper heat pipes.

The finish of the aluminium heatsink isn’t that awesome, but at least it has heat pipes to transfer heat from the GPU to the entire heatsink.

The heatsink is kept cool by two 90 mm fans, that not only has fan stop capability, but also comes with programmable RGB lighting!

Hot air from this cooler exhausts upwards and downwards. This is a shame, because it means the hot air recirculates within the PC case, instead of exhausting out the back.

GALAX GTX 1660 Super : Thermal Output

Note that these are not the recorded temperatures, but how much hotter the exhaust air is above ambient temperature.

The GALAX GTX 1660 Super with a 125 watt TDP has roughly the same peak exhaust temperature as the GeForce RTX 2060 with a much higher 175 watt TDP.

GALAX GTX 1660 Super : Noise Level

How noisy is the GALAX GeForce GTX 1660 Super? Check it out for yourself in this video!

Despite its rough finish, the aluminium heat pipe cooler does a great job of keeping the NVIDIA TU116 GPU cool, without the fans. In fact, the fans did not start spinning until about a minute into the Time Spy Extreme benchmark!

If you are not gaming and just doing work or watching YouTube or a movie, it will be completely silent. Even when you are running a strenuous game, the fans are quiet. That said, we did hear some rattling from the fans in our sample…

GALAX GTX 1660 Super : PCIe Power + Interface

The GALAX GeForce GTX 1660 Super has a TDP of 125 watts, and requires an 8-pin PCIe power cable.

It uses the good old PCI Express 3.0 x16 interface, which gives it the same PCIe bandwidth as the PCI Express 4.0 x8 interface used by the competing AMD Radeon RX 5500.

GALAX GeForce GTX 1660 Super : Performance Summary

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER is nothing more than the regular GTX 1660 with faster GDDR6 memory. This gives it the same GPU performance, but with 75% higher memory bandwidth.

This addresses a key deficit of the regular GTX 1660 cards, enough to give it a 10% to 25% boost in 1080p gaming performance according to NVIDIA.

The GALAX GeForce GTX 1660 Super (1-Click OC) is a slightly-overclocked variant of the GTX 1660 SUPER, with just a 30 MHz increase in the boost clock speed.

In our tests, it did pretty well, matching or even beating the GeForce GTX 1070 in many games :

  • Time Spy : 3% faster at 1080p, 2.4% faster at 4K
  • The Division 2 : 3% faster at 1080p, 5% faster at 4K
  • Strange Brigade : 6.5% faster at 1080p, 14% faster at 4K
  • Metro Exodus : 6.5% slower at 1080p, 5.5% slower at 4K
  • AOTS : 14% slower at 1080p, 1.9% slower at 4K

There’s something odd with the AOTS results, so we will be retesting the cards with the newer 441.08 driver that was released just after the launch.

But generally, the GALAX GeForce GTX 1660 Super card offers real good value for the money. For just $229, you are getting a card that’s basically equal in performance to the GeForce GTX 1070.

This is pretty impressive, because the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 has a 34% higher texture fill rate and 31% higher pixel fill rate on paper. What the GTX 1070 was short on was memory bandwidth, just 256 GB/s – 24% lower than the GTX 1660 SUPER.

GALAX GeForce GTX 1660 Super : Our Verdict

Its aluminium heatsink isn’t all that nicely-finished, but it does the job well enough, thanks to the four copper heat pipes and dual 90mm fans.

The fans only spin up when the GPU gets hot, which means it’s virtually silent until you start gaming. They are pretty quiet, but we noticed some rattling.

Now, it is factory-overclocked with a 15 MHz higher boost clock. But it’s called a 1-Click OC model because you actually need to use the 1-Click OC button in the GALAX Xtreme Tuner utility to increase the boost clock by another 15 MHz.

Interestingly, their latest Xtreme Tuner utility has not been updated to support this card, so the 1-Click OC option is greyed out. However, you can manually overclock the card… so you have to wonder – why bother with the 1-Click OC option?

A 30 MHz increase in the boost clock is nothing special. They should have just set the boost clock to 1815 MHz right out-of-the-box, and save everyone the hassle.

Our quibbles aside, the GALAX GeForce GTX 1660 Super is a decent card. More importantly, it’s cheaper than many of its competitors.

So yes, the GALAX GeForce GTX 1660 Super is definitely a card to consider, if you are looking for an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER card.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER : The Full Details!

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER is here, offering a nice boost in graphics memory performance.

Find out if this is enough to really call it a SUPER edition of the GeForce GTX 1660!

The Official NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER Tech Briefing

A few months after launching the RTX SUPER family of graphics cards, NVIDIA has finally unleashed the GTX SUPER series!

GeForce Product Manager Justin Walker briefed us on the GTX 1660 SUPER, as well as the GTX 1650 SUPER, in an exclusive pre-launch briefing, which we prepared for you here, including a short Q&A session :

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER is basically the regular GTX 1660 with a GDDR6 memory upgrade.

NVIDIA basically swapped out 8 Gbps GDDR5 memory for 14 Gbps GDDR6 memory, increasing its memory bandwidth from 192 GB/s to 336 GB/s.

All other performance characteristics remained unchanged – it has the same base and boost clocks, delivering the same texture and pixel fill rates.

Here is how it compares against the existing Turing-based GTX cards, and the GTX 1650 SUPER :

NVIDIA TU116

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti uses a brand new TU116 GPU that is built using the latest NVIDIA Turing microarchitecture.

However, it lacks the Tensor and RT cores that GeForce RTX graphics cards have. This is the reason why NVIDIA pegs It as a GTX, and not RTX.

The NVIDIA TU116 GPU is not a cut-down version of the TU106, but a completely new design with the Tensor cores and RT cores removed. It retains the other advantages of the Turing architecture – Concurrent Floating Point + Integer Operations, a Unified Cache Architecture and Adaptive Shading.

The TU116 basically bridges the old Pascal-based GeForce GTX graphics cards and the new Turing-based GeForce RTX graphics cards. Even though it lacks RT and Tensor cores, its Turing shaders gives it a big performance advantage.

GDDR6 Memory

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti comes with 6 GB of the GDDR6 memory. Coupled with its 192-bit memory interface, it is able to deliver a peak memory bandwidth of 288.1 GB/s. This is 50% more than the memory bandwidth of the GeForce GTX 1060.

Power Usage

The NVIDIA TU116 has 6.6 billion transistors – 50% more than the GP106 GPU used in the GeForce GTX 1060. But thanks to its smaller 12 nm FinFet process technology, NVIDIA is able to keep its thermal output and power consumption low.

Like the GeForce GTX 1060, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti has a 120 watt TDP, and requires one 8-pin PCIe power connector.

Concurrent Floating Point + Integer Operations

This is an important Turing shader technology, because games are increasingly mixing floating point operations with integer instructions. Take, for example, Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

For every 100 instructions, there are on average 62 floating point and 32 integer instructions. In earlier NVIDIA GPU architectures, the floating point datapath would idle while integer instructions are running.

The NVIDIA TU116 features a second, parallel integer execution unit. This allows it to execute integer instructions in parallel with floating point calculations. With an ideal 50-50 mix, the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti has more than twice the processing power of the GeForce GTX 1060

Of course, in real life, the actual performance boost is lower. According to NVIDIA, this feature alone gives the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti a 50% performance advantage over the GeForce GTX 1060.

Unified Cache Architecture

The NVIDIA TU116 also features a unified architecture for shared memory, L1 and texture caching. This allows the L1 cache to dynamically adjust its size for optimal performance.

Its L1 cache can grow as large as 64 KB in size, with 32 KB per SM shared memory allocation. Or it can shrink to 32 KB, which would allow 64 KB for shared memory.

In addition, combining the L1 data cache with shared memory cache reduces latency, and increases throughput. In fact, NVIDIA claims its hit throughout is quadrupled compared to Pascal.

NVIDIA showcased Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, which they claimed received a 40% performance boost due to the Turing unified cache architecture.

Adaptive Shading

The Turing architecture introduced a new shading technology called Variable Rate Shading (VRS)., with two key algorithms – Content Adaptive Sharing and Motion Adaptive Shading.

Irrespective of the algorithm used, the TU116 can adjust the shading rate for different regions of a scene, or even for specific objects. This reduces areas that need to be rendered in full detail, boosting performance.

Motion Adaptive Shading is used to adjust the shading rate based on the amount of motion present in a particular region. In a racing game, the player’s car would be rendered in full detail, while the road, lane markings and street signs could be rendered in lower detail with fewer samples. Since they’re moving rapidly – the human eye won’t perceive a slight reduction in pixel quality.

[adrotate group=”1″]

Content Adaptive Shading adjusts the shading rate according to spatial and temporal colour coherence across frames. In cases where color or spatial changes are minimal from frame to frame (for example, the sky in a scene, or a wall), the shading rate can be lowered in successive frames to improve performance without any noticeable reduction in image quality.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus was the first game to feature Turing’s Adaptive Shading technology. The GeForce GTX 1660 Ti receive a 50% boost in performance over the GeForce GTX 1060 when Adaptive Shading was enabled.
