The 100+ new NVIDIA GeForce laptops that are coming soon will feature new 2nd Gen Max-Q technology, that promises to DOUBLE efficiency over previous designs!
Find out what new Max-Q technologies NVIDIA are introducing in those new laptops!
NVIDIA Max-Q Technology : What Is It?
NVIDIA Max-Q Technology was first introduced at Computex 2017, and based on the NASA term, which refers to “the point at which aerodynamic stress on a vehicle in atmospheric flight is maximized“.
NVIDIA Max-Q uses a similar philosophy to design gaming laptops that are 3X thinner, with up to 3X more performance (compared to the previous-generation NVIDIA Maxwell GPUs).
So what exactly is the NVIDIA Max-Q design, and how does it work? Gaurav Agarwal, NVIDIA Product Marketing Manager, explains it all in this tech briefing.
2nd Gen NVIDIA Max-Q Technology : What’s New?
When NVIDIA announced 100 new laptop designs, including GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER and GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER gaming laptops, they also revealed details of the 2nd Gen Max-Q technology.
They basically added a bunch of new Max-Q technologies, which they promise will double efficiency over previous designs :
These are the new Max-Q technologies that will be included in all new 2020 GeForce RTX SUPER, GeForce RTX and GeForce GTX gaming laptops :
Dynamic Boost
Dynamic Boost Intelligently and automatically balances power between the GPU and CPU on a per-frame basis, boosting overall in-game performance.
Dynamic Boost is automatic, adaptive and always working to deliver more performance without increasing system power consumption.
Low-Voltage GDDR6
While not a technology unique to NVIDIA, NVIDIA say that they worked with their memory partners to increase memory efficiency, while delivering high performance with new lower voltage GDDR6 memory.
Advanced Optimus
Advanced Optimus controls which GPU is driving the display and intelligently determines the right GPU for the right workload at the right time, dynamically switching on the fly without needing a system reboot.
NVIDIA claims it will deliver long battery life and immersive, stutter-free gameplay with NVIDIA G-SYNC technology.
Next-Generation Regulator Efficiency
The 2nd Gen Max-Q designs will feature next-generation voltage regulators that will help optimise system design, so that the GPU will run more efficiently while delivering higher overall performance.
Deep Learning Super Sampling 2.0
Powered by the Tensor Cores in RTX GPUs, DLSS 2.0 is an improved deep learning neural network that boosts frame rates while generating beautiful, sharp images for games.
NVIDIA claims it will boost a game’s performance headroom while maximizing ray-tracing settings with increased output resolution and extending battery life by up to 20 percent.
2nd Gen NVIDIA Max-Q : Double Efficiency = Double Performance?
When NVIDIA says NVIDIA Max-Q will double efficiency, it is based on two caveats.
They are referring specifically to GRAPHICS performance.
On top of that, the additional efficiency is partly based on DLSS 2.0.
In the ideal scenario where you use a 2nd Gen Max-Q laptop with a game that supports DLSS 2.0, you should see almost a doubling of gaming performance.
Real world performance advantage from the 2nd Gen Max-Q technology will certainly be far, far less than that.
After all, how many games do you know support DLSS? And it will take time for DLSS 2.0 to be introduced.
That said, even a 25%-33% boost in efficiency would offer a nice upgrade over the last generation.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Up Close!
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) is powered by the 8th Generation Intel H series 6-core processor, with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics and fast NVMe SSD storage.
Lenovo offers two 15.6-inch display options :
a Full HD IPS display with 300 nits brightness and 72% Adobe RGB colour gamut, or
a 4K UHD HDR display with 400 nits brightness and 100% Adobe RGB colour gamut
The Full HD display option is slightly (0.3 mm) thinner and marginally (100 grams) lighter than the 4K UHD display option.
Despite sporting a large 15.6-inch display, it is only 18 mm thick, and weighs just 1.8 kg. It even has a long-lasting 80 Whr battery inside!
In addition to processor options, Lenovo also allows you to customise the following options :
DDR4-2666 Memory : 8 GB / 16 GB / 32 GB / 64GB
PCIe SSD Storage : 256 GB / 512 GB / 1 TB / 2 TB
Optional IR camera with Glance technology
Dual Fan, Dual Heatpipe Cooling
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) is designed to run in the most extreme conditions. Hence, it is kept cool by a dual-fan, dual-heatpipe cooling system that you can just see through the large vents on its underside.
The two heatpipes whisk heat away from the CPU and GPU to the two heatsinks – each kept cool by a fan that sucks in cool air from the underside. The hot air is then exhausted out the back. The inside of the chassis is also kept cool passively by large vents.
Webcam + Optional IR Camera
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) comes with a very basic 720p webcam. At this price point, we would have expected at least a 1080p webcam. But at least it comes with a ThinkShutter privacy cover.
Lenovo offers an optional IR camera, which we highly recommend because it allows for the more secure Windows Hello login method.
The IR camera also supports the Lenovo Glance technology, which merges face-, eye- and gaze-tracking. It allows the cursor to automatically focus on where you are looking at, or windows to shift with a move of your eyes. This is especially useful when you are working on multiple monitors.
Lay Flat Display
Whether you opt for the Full HD or 4K UHD panel, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) has a lay-flat display design. Its hinge is designed to let the display lay completely flat.
This makes it easier to work with other people, particularly since the display is touch-sensitive and supports writing with a pen. Lenovo offers an optional pen, but you can also use a third-party pen like the Genius Pen.
If you like our work, you can help support our work by visiting our sponsors, participating in the Tech ARP Forums, or even donating to our fund. Any help you can render is greatly appreciated!
Fingerprint Sensor
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) has an enterprise-grade fingerprint sensor. Instead of being integrated into the Power button, it is built into the chassis, to the right of the keyboard.
It uses a Match-on-Chip fingerprint sensor, which means the fingerprint data is registered, stored and verified by the fingerprint reader chip itself.
This prevents a hacker or malware from using a man-in-the-middle attack to falsely verify a fake fingerprint.
Keyboard + Touch Pad + TrackPoint
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) has a full-sized keyboard that is spill-resistant. That means it will withstand a small spill of water without shorting out.
In addition to its glass touchpad, the ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) comes with the iconic ted TrackPoint joystick. Also known as a pointing stick, the TrackPoint is pressure-activated, allowing for faster and better cursor control with minimal movement.
Connectivity Options
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) comes with a plethora of connectivity options and ports.
Wirelessly, it supports 802.11 AC 2×2 WiFi connectivity, which means it has dual transmit and receive antennas for better reception and range. It also supports the latest Bluetooth 5.0 technology.
Here is a list of ports you will find on the left and right side of the ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) :
[adrotate group=”2″]
AC Power Port
Two USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C / Thunderbolt 3 ports
HDMI 2.0 port
Network extension port
3.5 mm combo audio and microphone port
Smart Card reader
4-in-1 SD card reader
Two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports (one is always on)
Kensington lock slot
Battery + Charging
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) comes with a 4-Cell Li-Cylinder battery that Lenovo says will last up to 15 hours.
It has a total capacity of 80 Watt-hours, which means it will last one hour if the X1 Extreme uses 80 watts of power, or two hours if it uses 40 watts, or four hours if it sips just 20 watts of power.
Lenovo pairs it with a compact 135 watt rapid charging adaptor that they promise will recharge the battery to 80% in just one hour. A small LED indicator light next to the power port tells you the X1 Extreme’s charging status at a glance.
Here were our findings when we put its battery to the test :

PCMark 10 – Productivity App Performance
Surprisingly, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) only scored 4,332 in PCMark 10 on AC power.
Many other laptops powered by the Intel Core i7-8850H processor and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GPU would score just over 5,200 – about 20% higher.
When we switched to battery power, its performance was throttled by about 31% to improve battery life.
This makes it about ⅓ as fast as a gaming laptop based on the full-powered NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, which would score around 15,800.
If you run it on battery power, its performance gets throttled by about 21%, reducing its Fire Strike score to just under 5,000.

On Battery Power
3DMark Time Spy Strike (DX12, 1920 x 1080)
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) scored 2,393 on Time Spy – about ⅓ as fast as a full-powered NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, which would score around 7,000.
When we switched to battery power, its performance was throttled by 9.5% – the smallest drop we recorded.

Our Verdict Of The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) looks and feels every bit like business laptop – from its angular design all the way to its matte black colour scheme. But it’s far more than just another mobile workstation.
Beneath its business-like veneer is a tough laptop that not only offers enterprise-grade Lenovo ThinkShield protection from factory till the end of its lifespan, but also military-grade toughness. In fact, every ThinkPad X1 Extreme has to pass 12 military-grade tests.
These aspects are important to note because the ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) is neither the most powerful mobile workstation in the market, nor does it offer the best performance for the money. In fact, our benchmarks show that it consistently underperforms laptops with the same processor and graphics card.
Performance, mark our words, is not what the ThinkPad X1 Extreme is offering. It is the entirety of the package that differentiates the X1 Extreme from its competitors – configurability, security and reliability in a thin and light package.
If you have the cash to spare, it offers an incredible 4K HDR display with 400 nits of brightness and 100% Adobe RGB colour gamut. You can also configure it with up to 64 GB of DDR4 memory, and up to two PCIe SSDs offering up to 2 TB of storage!
You can also count on its diverse connectivity options – super-fast Wireless-AC and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, with many ports to use – the latest Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C ports as well as the good-old 3.5 mm audio port!
It’s not just work, work, work though. The ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) supports Dolby Audio Premium and Dolby Atmos, so it doubles as a great entertainment and gaming laptop after a hard day’s work.
Ultimately, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) is designed for those who need absolute security and reliability. Whether you are working in the comfort of your flying office, or in harsh field environments, you know you can depend on the X1 Extreme.

Despite its gaming chops and beefed-up cooling system, Dell engineers managed to keep it under an inch thick, and under 3 kg in weight. That’s with a larger 4-cell 56 WHrs battery.
Dell G7 15 Key Features
Now, let’s take a closer look at the key features of the 2018 Dell G7 15 (7588) gaming laptop.
Unlike many gaming laptops, the Dell uses an IPS panel with a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. That means better colour and a wider viewing angle, at the expense of a longer response time and higher cost.
It has an anti-glare coating, but lacks a higher refresh rate or anti-tear technologies like NVIDIA G-SYNC or AMD FreeSync. What this means is – your games will look great, but you will have to live with a longer response time, and some tearing in FPS games.
At the top of the display is a wide-angle 720p webcam with a dual-array digital microphone.

Dual-Tone Colour Scheme
The 2018 Dell D7 15 (7588) comes in two colour options – Alpine White or Licorice Black. The Alpine White colour option is the more interesting of the two, because it is a dual-tone colour scheme. It has a white top and sides, with a black underside.
Licorice Black is a more professional-looking colour option. It’s plain black, like most business laptops, allowing you to game while pretending to work hard at the office… 😉

More Dell G7 15 Key Features
Keyboard + Touch Pad
The Dell G7 15 (7588) gaming laptop comes with a full-sized keyboard with a numeric keypad. The keys are all back-lit in blue, with the WASD keys specially-highlighted.
It also comes with a rather large touch pad, which is oddly offset to the left. The offset touch pad makes it a bit harder to use, but let’s be frank – no sane gamer would be using the touch pad.
Fingerprint Sensor
The Dell G7 15 (7588) gaming laptop has a touch fingerprint sensor built into the power button.
Like current smartphone fingerprint sensors, it is fast and supports all-aspect fingerprint detection, making it really easy to log into Windows, and start gaming!
Connectivity Options
The Dell G7 15 (7588) gaming laptop comes with a plethora of connectivity options. On the left side, you will find a Noble lock slot, the power port, an RJ-45 LAN port, a USB 3.1 Gen 1 port and an SD card reader.
On the right side, you will find a 3.5 mm audio port, two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports, a single USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C / Thunderbolt 3 port, and a HDMI 2.0 port.
On the wireless side, it supports dual-band 802.11ac WiFi with Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity.
Dual Drive Storage
Our Dell G7 15 (7588) gaming laptop came with dual storage drives – a fast 256 GB Toshiba KSG60ZMV256G NVMe SSD and a 1 TB Seagate ST1000LM035 hard disk drive with a 5,400 RPM spindle speed.
Right out of the box, the SSD drive has 188 GB of available storage, while the hard disk drive has 931 GB of available storage.
Dell offers a smaller 128 GB SSD option, but we highly recommend sticking with the 256 GB SSD because you will run out of space pretty quickly on the 128 GB, and the SSD loads games much faster than the 5400 RPM hard disk drive.

Dell G7 16 Battery Life
[adrotate group=”2″]
The Dell G7 15 (7588) gaming laptop comes with a 4-cell, 56 WHr lithium-ion battery. It supports quick-charging, allowing you to recharge 25% of its capacity in just 15 minutes.
Our review model came with a larger and more powerful 180 watt charger. The lower-end models that use the GeForce GTX 1050 or GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics come with a 130 watt charger instead.
What’s truly impressive is how long it lasted. When we tested its predecessor, the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming, we only managed to game for 45 minutes. The mobile gaming time has more than double with the 2018 Dell G7 15 – we played for just over 2 hours!
Dell G7 15 Gaming Performance
On Battery
We tested the Dell G7 15 running on battery, and it delivered 2,822 on the 3DMark FireStrike test.
This is not a very good score, but it is the secret of how the Dell G7 15 managed to last 2 hours of gaming.
On Main Power
If you really want the Dell G7 15 to roar, plug it into the main power, and it more than triples its gaming performance. Specifically, it scores 9,916 on the 3DMark FireStrike test – 3.5X higher than on battery power!
Our Verdict
The Dell G7 15 (7588) gaming laptop is a refreshing new approach by Dell. Instead of tacking onto the Inspiron line, they rebranded it under the new Dell G line, with a new design.
It now sports a new sleeker design, with beefed-up gaming and cooling performance. Its hexa-core Core i7-8750H processor and GeForce GTX 1060 Max-Q graphics is more than fast enough to deliver high frame rates on its full HD display.
Dell also went with an IPS panel, when many gaming laptops opt for TN panels with a high refresh rate and a low response time. This means you will enjoy better colours and a wide viewing angle, which is great if you do more than just game.
The Dell G7 15 checks off many of the standard gaming features – a backlit keyboard, a solid state drive for fast boot-ups and game loads, a pair of decent speakers, and fast wired and wireless connectivity. To top it off – it has a longer-lasting battery – good enough for about 2 hours of gameplay.
Of course, there are tons of other gaming laptops with the same specifications. What’s really impressive though is its affordability. Even this top-of-the-line model costs less than RM 7,000 / ~US$ 1,750. This is a great deal for those who want to enjoy gaming on-the-go, but could not afford a decent gaming laptop.
The Dell G7 15 (7588) gaming laptop is designed to offer an affordable combination of gaming performance, and they didn’t appear to cut too many corners to do it. That’s why we think it deserves our Reviewer’s Choice Award. Congratulations, Dell!

The 2018 ASUS ZenBook Tech Briefing
Let’s start with the 2018 ASUS ZenBook tech briefing by Andrew Chan, Senior Manager of the ASUS Global Product Team.
The 2018 ASUS ZenBook Flip 13 and Flip 15 models are essentially the convertible versions of the 2018 ASUS ZenBook laptops. They are now 10% smaller than the previous generation, thanks to their ASUS NanoEdge displays with ultra-thin bezels.
Thanks to the thinner form factor, they are now the world’s most compact convertible laptops. The NanoEdge display also delivers a more immersive viewing experience, thanks to its 90% screen-to-body ratio.
And believe it or not, these classy convertible laptops are tough – being certified to meet the MIL-STD-810G standard for durability and reliability!
Finally, both ZenBook Flip models features the 360° ErgoLift hinge design, which has a silky-smooth, stepless action that holds the display securely at any angle, allowing ZenBook Flip to be used in laptop, tablet, stand or tent modes… anything in between!
If you open the laptop beyond 135°, the ErgoLift hinge will automatically lift and tilt the keyboard to a more comfortable typing angle.
The 2018 ASUS ZenBook Flip 13 (UX362)
The 2018 ASUS ZenBook Flip 13 (UX362) features a 13.3-inch NanoEdge display, with a 90% screen-to-body ratio. It is powered by the 8th Generation Intel Core i7 processor with up to 16 GB of RAM and PCIe SSD storage.
It has a full-size keyboard, with its physical numeric keypad replaced by the new ASUS NumberPad – an LED-illuminated numeric keypad built into the touchpad! It also offers an optional world-facing camera, located next to the keyboard, which can be used for mixed-reality applications.
The 2018 ASUS ZenBook Flip 15 (UX562)
The 2018 ASUS ZenBook Flip 15 (UX562) features a 15.6-inch NanoEdge display, available with either a Full HD (DeltaE < 3) or a 4K UHD panel (DeltaE <2). Both panels have a wide 100% sRGB colour gamut.
The 4K UHD display is PANTONE validated and factory-calibrated for colour accuracy. It also has built-in ASUS Calibration Technology, for easy colour calibration.
The new Flip 15 is powered by the 8th Generation Intel Core i7 processor with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Max-Q graphics. You can equip it with both an SSD as well as a HDD.
It has a full-size keyboard, with a physical numeric keypad. It also offers an optional world-facing camera, located next to the keyboard, which can be used for mixed-reality applications.

We were amongst the first in the world to get some hands-on time with the THREE new 2018 ASUS ZenBook premium laptop models in Taipei. Check out the full 2018 ASUS ZenBook tech briefing, as well as our own hands-on previews of the ZenBook 13, ZenBook 14 and ZenBook 15 laptops!
The 2018 ASUS ZenBook Tech Briefing
Let’s start with the 2018 ASUS ZenBook tech briefing by Andrew Chan, Senior Manager of the ASUS Global Product Team.
The 2018 ASUS ZenBook models introduce the new frameless ASUS NanoEdge display. Its ultra-slim bezels on all four sides allows ASUS to deliver a screen-to-body ratio of up to 95%, offering a near borderless viewing experience.
They are now the world’s most compact laptops in their respective classes, with a smaller form factor than the previous generation. They also incorporate the unique ErgoLift hinge mechanism that automatically tilts the keyboard for a more comfortable typing experience.
Now, let’s have a close look at the three 2018 ASUS ZenBook models!
The 2018 ASUS ZenBook 13 (UX333)
This is the baby of the family, with a 13-inch NanoEdge display that offers a whopping 95% screen-to-body ratio. Yet it is powered by a quad-core 8th Generation Intel Core i7 processor with NVIDIA GeForce MX150 graphics.
Despite its small size, it boasts a full-size keyboard for comfortable typing. How did ASUS accomplish this? By removing its physical numeric keypad, and replacing it with the ASUS NumberPad – a unique LED-illuminated numeric keypad integrated into the touchpad!
The 2018 ASUS ZenBook 14 (UX433)
This model is quite similar to the ZenBook 13. It has a larger 14-inch NanoEdge display with a 92% screen-to-body ratio. It is also powered by a quad-core 8th Generation Intel Core i7 processor with NVIDIA GeForce MX150 graphics.
Like the ZenBook 13, the 2018 ASUS ZenBook 14 boasts a full-size keyboard, with the new ASUS NumberPad built into its touchpad.
The 2018 ASUS ZenBook 15 (UX533)
This is the big daddy of the 2018 ASUS ZenBook family. Sporting a large 15.6-inch NanoEdge display with a 92% screen-to-body ratio, it is powered by a quad-core 8th Generation Intel Core i7 processor with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Max-Q graphics.
Because it has a relatively large chassis, it has enough space for a full-size keyboard with a physical numeric keypad. Hence, it does not come with the ASUS NumberPad built into its keypad.

The Acer Predator Triton 700 Up Close
The Acer Predator Triton 700 (Price Check) is powered by the Intel Core i7-7700HQ quad-core processor with 32 GB of DDR4 memory, and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 with Max-Q Design. It even has two PCI Express SSDs running in RAID 0.
There are a total of five USB ports – three USB 3.0 ports, a USB 3.1 Gen 2 (Thunderbolt 3) Type C port, and a single USB 2.0 port. Curiously, that USB 2.0 port is actually recessed, and concealed by special cover.
To cater to gamers, it also comes with a full-sized LAN port, a HDMI 2.0 port, and a DisplayPort. Unfortunately, there is no SD card reader.
120 Hz Full HD G-SYNC Display
One of the key features of the Acer Predator Triton 700 (Price Check) is its display. It boasts a large 15.6″ display with an IPS panel and a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080. The display is capable of a 120 Hz refresh rate, and supports NVIDIA G-SYNC for a tear-free gaming experience.
If that display is not good enough, it has full-size DisplayPort and HDMI ports at the back, and a Thunderbolt 3 port on the right side, allowing you to hook up the Predator Triton 700 to an external 4K monitor.
[adrotate group=”1″]
Keyboard & Touchpad
One of the Acer Predator Triton 700’s best features is its keyboard, which boasts low-profile mechanical switches and individual RGB backlighting for each key. In addition to tactile feedback, this mechanical keyboard also offers N-key rollover (NKRO) and anti-ghosting capabilities.
Right above the keyboard is a 0.7 mm Gorilla Glass glass plate. It allows you to peek inside at the spinning AeroBlade 3D fan, and doubles as a large precision touchpad.
The only problem is the position of the glass plate makes it rather inconvenient to use as a touchpad. It also lacks buttons, so you will need to use multi-touch gestures instead.

AeroBlade 3D Cooler
In any premium gaming laptop, cooling is a top priority. The Acer Predator Triton 700 (Price Check) comes with two AeroBlade 3D fans and five heat pipes to quickly whisk heat away from the CPU and GPU, and exhaust it out.
Cool air is drawn in by the two AeroBlade 3D fans through a large number of vents on the underside, and used to cool the two heatsinks at the back and an additional heatsink on each side.
While this cooling system is very sleek and quiet, the Predator Triton 700 (Price Check) can get rather toasty. During our gaming sessions, we noted that the keyboard can reach temperatures of 40°C.
This is likely because there is very little clearance under the Predator Triton 700 for it to draw in cool air. We recommend using a laptop cooler.
Acer Predator Triton 700 Gaming Performance
The Acer Predator Triton 700 (Price Check) is powered by the Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor. This is a 4-core, 8-thread processor with a 6 MB L2 cache, a 2.8 GHz base clock and a 3.8 GHz boost clock.
It is paired with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 with 8 GB of GDDR5X memory. This is a Max-Q Design laptop, which means the GPU is tuned for peak efficiency, as opposed to maximum performance.
The Max-Q Design allows the GeForce GTX 1080 to run 40% cooler, with only a 10% reduction in performance. You can read all about this inThe NVIDIA Max-Q Design Tech Briefing.
Memory & Storage
Our Acer Predator Triton 700 (Price Check) model came with a phenomenal 32 GB of DDR4-2400 memory. Frankly – games do not need more than 8 GB of memory, so this is overkill. However, it is heaven-sent if you also intend to do serious work on the Predator Triton 700.
It also comes with two PCI Express SSDs in a RAID 0 (striped) configuration. Both SSDs have a storage capacity of 256 GB, so you have a total storage size of 512 GB.
Setting them up as a RAID 0 array allows for insanely fast transfer rates, which is great for benchmarks but will not matter much in games beyond loading faster.
The Battery
[adrotate group=”2″]
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Acer Predator Triton 700 (Price Check) comes with a really tiny 3-cell lithium-ion battery with a total capacity of 54 Watt-hours. It can’t pack a large battery in such a thin form factor. Remember – it’s only 18.9 mm thick!
The downside – there’s not much juice in the tank. And the Predator Triton 700 is a thirsty beast. There’s a reason why it comes with a 230 W charger.
We could only game for 45 minutes before the battery drained to 10%. That means you need to be tethered to a wall socket to game for any significant amount of time.
Speakers
We are pleasantly surprised to find out that the Acer Predator Triton 700 has pretty decent speakers. It makes it more enjoyable to game without headphones.
If you prefer using headphones though, you will be glad to know that it supports Dolby Atmos. It will give you better spatial awareness, with the 3D soundscape it produces.

Acer Predator Triton 700 : Our Verdict + Award
The Acer Predator Triton 700 (Price Check) is a really great gaming laptop for those who want a sleek and powerful gaming laptop. It packs a ton of gaming performance in a form factor that is just under 19 mm thick, and weighs only 2.4 kg.
We are impressed by its performance. What’s not to like? It has a quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with a very fast GeForce GTX 1080 GPU. If you want a gaming laptop that can take on AAA game titles, this is it.
Our model even comes with 32 GB of DDR4-2400 memory, and a RAID 0 array of two PCI Express SSDs. Serious overkill for gaming, but perfect for doing serious graphics and video work.
Beyond its raw gaming performance is its mechanical keyboard. Low-profile, yet offering the tactile feedback that many gamers desire. But we have to question their decision to adopt the see-through Gorilla Glass plate as a touchpad.
Sure, it’s a unique design feature that looks good, but it’s not practical. Whether you use the Predator Triton 700 (Price Check) for work or play, you need to pair it with a mouse.
[adrotate group=”2″]
The display is another great selling point. It offers a practical full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080, with an IPS panel capable of a 120 Hz refresh rate. It also supports NVIDIA G-SYNC for a premium tear-free gaming experience.
We also like the fact that it comes with not one, not two, but three display output options. This gaming laptop is designed to support an external display, if you find the 15.6″ display too small.
Its svelte form factor makes it a cinch to carry around, but its utility on-the-go is limited by its small battery. You will always be tethered to a wall socket, which means lugging along the large and heavy charger.
But if you’re a practical person who is not going to buy into the gaming on-the-go BS, the Acer Predator Triton 700 (Price Check) is a great gaming laptop. Just hook it up to a power socket, add a mouse and it will handle any game you throw at it.
In fact, we like it so much we think it deserves no less than our Reviewer’s Choice Award. Congratulations, Acer!

It is a new design approach that allows gaming laptops to be thinner, quieter and yet, faster. How is this possible? Let’s find out!
The NVIDIA Max-Q Design Tech Briefing
Max Q is actually a NASA term which refers to “the point at which aerodynamic stress on a vehicle in atmospheric flight is maximized“.
Here is a summary of the NVIDIA Max-Q design’s key features :
NVIDIA Max-Q is built around NVIDIA Pascal, specifically the GeForce GTX 1080, 1070 and 1060 GPUs.
The key design philosophy is a new focus on peak efficiency, instead of peak performance.
Instead of running at maximum frequency, the GPU will run at a lower frequency that has been determined to achieve peak efficiency.
This greatly reduces the GPU’s power consumption and thermal output, at the expense of some performance.
In the case of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080, the Max-Q version will run 60 W cooler (90 W, instead of 150 W) while suffering only a 10% reduction in performance.
The massive reduction in the TGP (Total Graphics Power) allows a more powerful GPU like the GeForce GTX 1080 in a thinner laptop.
The lower TGP also allows for the use of thinner, lighter and quieter cooling solutions, and a longer battery life.
From what we understand, the Max-Q and non Max-Q GPUs are the same. The Max-Q version just uses firmware that has been tuned for efficiency, instead of performance.
The NVIDIA WhisperMode Technology
[adrotate group=”2″]
NVIDIA also introduced the new NVIDIA WhisperMode technology, which will be available by the end of June 2017.
Although not technically part of NVIDIA Max-Q, it helps to make the laptop run much quieter while you’re gaming.
WhisperMode intelligently paces the game’s frame rate while automatically adjusting the graphics setting for optimal power efficiency. This reduces reduces the laptop’s acoustic level during games.
NVIDIA WhisperMode is completely user-adjustable via GeForce Experience, and will be available for all NVIDIA Pascal-based laptops.
Availability Of NVIDIA Max-Q Gaming Laptops
Gaming laptops featuring GeForce GTX 1080, 1070 and 1060 GPUs using the new NVIDIA Max-Q design will be available starting June 27, 2017 from brands like Acer, Aftershock, Alienware, ASUS, Clevo, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, and MSI.
The first three gaming laptops to feature NVIDIA Max-Q are the ASUS Zephyrus, MSI GS63 and the Clevo P950.

The first major event at Computex Taipei 2017 was the Powering The AI Revolution keynote by NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang. Although the keynote was heavy on artificial intelligence technologies like NVIDIA Isaac and NVIDIA Volta, Jensen also announced other technologies like GeForce GTX with Max-Q Design.
NVIDIA Isaac, Max-Q, Volta, HGX & More!
In this 90 minute long keynote, Jensen reveals the future of artificial intelligence and robotics. In that vision, the GPU is taking over from the CPU in delivering the petaflops of computing power required to deliver artificial intelligence.
He also reveals the new NVIDIA technologies that will power the next-generation AI applications – the new NVIDIA Tesla V100, which is the largest GPU ever made, and the NVIDIA HGX server that hosts eight of these GPUs to deliver almost 1 petaflops of compute performance in a single chassis!
Jensen also shows how the NVIDIA Isaac Initiative allows robots to self-learn in a virtual environment, using nothing more than the NVIDIA Jetson 2 module. Watch how AI on the edge delivers smarter intelligence with minimal work.
Whether you are a scientist in these fields, or just geeks like us, you will enjoy listening to his views and NVIDIA’s endeavours in those technologies.
