Unboxing The AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT!

The AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT comes in a large and heavy cardboard box. Very heavy duty, with thick foam packaging.

AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT : Hands-On Experience!

Let’s take a closer look at the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT in our hands-on video, and pictures.

Be careful when you handle it, because it is a rather bulky and heavy card.

That’s partly because it comes with a large (and heavy) 2.5-slot cooler with triple axial fans.

The AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT is kept cool by a really thick heatsink, covered by a shroud with triple axial fans.

Part of the reason why it’s so heavy – it has a full-length die-cast aluminium backplate at the back.

Here you can see its thick heatsink, and how its cooler is designed to suck in air from the front of the card, and exhaust the hot air from the top and the bottom of the card.

It has four display connectors. From left to right : one USB Type C port, two DisplayPort 1.4 ports, and one HDMI 2.1 port.

The card uses up to 300 watts of power, and comes with two 8-pin PCI Express power connectors.

It should work with two 6-pin power cables though – both 8-pin and 6-pin cables deliver 150 watts.

AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT supports PCI Express 4.0, which offers double the bandwidth of PCI Express 3.0.

However, that requires you to use a PCI Express 4.0 motherboard, like the recommended AMD X570 motherboards.

But do not fret if you are on the Intel platform. It is backward-compatible with PCI Express 3.0, and will work just fine with PCIe 3.0 motherboards.

AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT : In Action!

Our testbed pairs the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X processor with the ASUS CROSSHAIR VIII Hero (AMD X570) motherboard, with 32 GB of DDR4 memory.

Take a look at the Radeon RX 6800 XT in action, and listen to how quiet it sounds… even when it revs up during the strenuous part of the test!

AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT : Peak Exhaust Temperature

We recorded the peak exhaust temperatures of those cards, to see how much heat they throw out. Take a look…

Note that these are not the recorded temperatures, but how much hotter the exhaust air is above ambient temperature.

Rated for 300 watts, AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT is definitely a hot card, blowing out really hot air like a hairdryer. The good news is – its triple axial fans are quiet even during the most strenuous tests.

But please make sure your case is well-ventilated, as the hot air is expelled from the top and bottom of the card, and will recirculate within the case.

It will get really, REALLY hot inside the chassis if you don’t ventilate well!

AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT Performance : 3DMark

AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT : Our Verdict + Award!

The new RDNA 2 architecture delivered what AMD promised – a serious threat to NVIDIA’s dominance in gaming performance.

The AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT is an impressive piece of work, offering seriously good gaming performance, with really competitive ray tracing performance.

Pundits may have been worried about its relatively narrow 256-bit memory bus, but the new Infinity Cache appears to have solved that problem.

The proof is in the pudding, as they say… and our benchmarks have shown that the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT is a leap forward in gaming performance!

Here is a quick summary of its gaming performance over the last-generation Radeon RX 5700 XT.

  • Time Spy | Time Spy Extreme : +91%
  • The Division 2 : +82%
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider : +77%
  • Metro Exodus : +75%
  • Dirt 5 : +75%
  • F1 2019 : +61%
  • Total War Saga TROY : +55%
  • World War Z : +53%
  • Star Control Origins : +44%
  • Gears Tactics : +27%

And here is how it compares against NVIDIA’s last-generation GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER.

  • Dirt 5 : +68%
  • Time Spy | Time Spy Extreme : +55%
  • F1 2019 : +54%
  • The Division 2 : +49%
  • Metro Exodus : +45%
  • World War Z : +36%
  • Star Control Origins : +30%
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider : +29%
  • Total War Saga TROY : +28%
  • Gears Tactics : +12%

As you can see, we are talking about a completely new level of gaming performance. Significant enough that it’s worth upgrading from the last-generation cards, never mind older cards!

But we do have to caution you about one thing – its considerable heat output. With a board power of 300 watts, the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT produces A LOT of heat.

Fortunately, the triple axial fans are more than capable of keeping it cool… while remaining very quiet.

However, the heat it produces may interfere with CPU performance, if you are pairing it with powerful but hot 16-core AMD Ryzen 9 5950X processor.

If you do not ensure that there is adequate ventilation inside the case, the heat build-up could result in thermal throttling of the CPU and/or graphics card.

That issue aside, we would like to applaud AMD for a job well done! The AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT is an awesome graphics card, and it deserves no less than our Editor’s Choice Award!

AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT : Price + Availability

The AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT has a RRP of US$649, and will be available for sale starting 18 November 2020.

Custom boards will be available from brands like ASRock, ASUS, Gigabyte starting in November 2020.

Unboxing The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER (US | UK | MY) comes in a large cardboard box that doubles as a stand. Let’s take a quick look around, before we unbox it and see what we find inside!

The GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER (US | UK | MY) package is rather basic, but for those who are still using monitors with DVI ports, the bundled DP-to-DVI dongle will be very useful.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Hands On!

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER (US | UK | MY) has the full NVIDIA TU104 GPU with 3072 stream processors.

This gives it 192 TMUs and 64 ROPS, delivering a peak output of 349 GT/s and 116 GP/s, thanks to its higher clock speeds.

Its 8 GB of GDDR6 memory runs at a higher speed speed of 1937.5 MHz, giving it a peak memory bandwidth of 496 GB/s.

Even though the TU104 GPU is fabricated on the 12 nm process technology, the card only needs 250 watts of power.

NVIDIA Turing

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX SUPER series continues to use the NVIDIA Turing microarchitecture, the first to introduce real-time ray tracing capabilities and new Tensor Cores.

It also continues to benefit from NVIDIA DLSS (Deep Learning Super-Sampling), which can be used to deliver better than TAA quality with a significantly lower performance penalty, or much better image quality – equivalent to 64X super sampling.

RTX 2080 SUPER Power Requirements

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER (US | UK | MY) is a true SUPER version of the GeForce RTX 2080.

It uses the full TU104 GPU with additional 256 stream processors, so it comes to no surprise that it would require 250 watts of power as well.

Like the GeForce RTX 2080 and the RTX 2070 SUPER, you will need a power supply with both 6-pin and 8-pin PCI Express power cables.

RTX 2080 SUPER Display Ports

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER (US | UK | MY) has three DisplayPort 1.4 ports, each supporting up to 8K HDR resolution at 60 Hz, or 4K HDR at 120 Hz or more.

There is also a tiny USB-C VirtualLink port, which allows you to connect a VR headset. But guess what – it works like a standard USB-C port, so you can also connect any USB-C device to it!

For compatibility with older displays, there is a HDMI 2.0b port, which supports up to 4K HDR displays at up to 60 Hz… as well as a DP-to-DVI dongle, which allows you to hook it up to older monitors with a DVI port.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER – Our Verdict!

Coming up with the RTX SUPER cards was easy for NVIDIA. They reused the same NVIDIA Turing GPUs that powered the RTX 20 series.

But of the three RTX SUPER cards they released, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER (US | UK | MY) is the one true SUPER card.

While the RTX 2070 SUPER and RTX 2060 SUPER use cut-down versions of the RTX 2080 and RTX 2070 cards respectively, the RTX 2080 SUPER uses the full TU104 GPU and came with higher clock speeds, and faster GDDR6 memory.

This allows it to be much faster than a regular RTX 2080, at the same price point!

NVIDIA naturally dropped the RTX 2080, offering consumers the choice of the much faster RTX 2080 SUPER, or the much cheaper RTX 2070 SUPER.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER (US | UK | MY) far outclasses the RX 5700, and the RX 5700 XT. But we managed to get our hands on the Radeon VII, which arguably is its closest AMD rival. Here is a summary of their performance in our six real world game benchmarks :

  • F1 2019 : RTX 2080S is faster by 11% (1080p), 13% (1440p) and 17% (2160p)
  • World War Z : RTX 2080S is 9% faster at 1080p and 1440p, Radeon VII is 4% faster at 2160p
  • The Division 2 : RTX 2080S is 17.5% faster at 1080p, 22-23% faster at 1440p and 2160p
  • Strange Brigade : RTX 2080S is 15% faster at 1080p, 12.5% faster at 1440p, but ties with the Radeon VII at 2160p
  • Metro Exodus : RTX 2080S is 10% faster at 1080p, 8.5% faster at 1440p, and just 5% faster at 2160p
  • AOTS : RTX 2080S is 5% faster at 1440p, and 12% faster at 2160p

Generally, we would say that GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER (US | UK | MY) is roughly 10-15% faster than the Radeon VII and the RTX 2070 SUPER.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER (US | UK | MY) is not only the one true SUPER card, it is the only one that can reliably deliver 4K gaming performance at 60 fps and beyond.

It is therefore, the logical choice, for those who want to game at 4K with most, if not all, of the graphics bells and whistles turned on.

However, you must be prepared to pay a 40% price premium of $200 over the RTX 2070 SUPER for roughly 12.5% better performance.

If you plan to game at 1440p, or don’t mind turning down some graphics features, buy the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER instead.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Game Bundle

NVIDIA is bundling TWO GAMES – Wolfenstein : Youngblood and Control – with the RTX 2080 SUPER. They are worth at least $50, so that’s a really nice deal… if you like those games.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER Founders Edition Review!

NVIDIA spiked the AMD Radeon RX 5700 launch party by first teasing, and then launching the GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER.

A cut-down version of the GeForce RTX 2070, it comes with 2176 stream processors and 8 GB of GDDR6 memory, at a $100 lower price point!

How will it match up against the new Radeon RX 5700, and its predecessor, the RTX 2060? Let’s find out!

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER Primer

Designed to extend NVIDIA’s performance lead against the new AMD Navi-based graphics cards, the NVIDIA RTX SUPER graphics cards are based on cut-down versions of existing GeForce RTX models.

The GeForce RTX 2060 survives to remain the cheapest RTX card you can buy, while the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti remains the most powerful RTX graphics card that money can buy.

This is how the new NVIDIA GeForce RTX SUPER series compares to the older NVIDIA GeForce RTX series.

Unboxing The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER (US | UK | MY) comes in a large cardboard box that doubles as a stand. Let’s take a quick look around, and see what we find inside!

As you can see, it basically comes with just a Quick Start Guide, and a Support Guide. Nothing else.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER Hands On!

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER (US | UK | MY) has an NVIDIA TU106 GPU with 2176 stream processors.

This gives it 136 TMUs and 64 ROPS, delivering a peak output of 224 GT/s and 106 GP/s, thanks to its higher clock speeds.

Its 8 GB of GDDR6 memory runs at a speed of 1750 MHz, giving it a peak memory bandwidth of 448 GB/s.

Even though the TU106 GPU is fabricated on the 12 nm process technology, the card only needs 175 watts of power.

RTX 2060 SUPER Power Requirements

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER (US | UK | MY) is a cut-down version of the GeForce RTX 2070, so it comes to no surprise that it would require 175 watts of power as well.

Like the GeForce RTX 2070, you will need a power supply with an 8-pin PCI Express power cable.

RTX 2060 SUPER Display Ports

Surprisingly, it comes with a wide variety of display options. It has two DisplayPort 1.4 ports, that allows it to support up to 8K HDR resolution at 60 Hz, or 4K HDR at 120 Hz or more.

There is also a tiny USB-C VirtualLink port, which allows you to connect a VR headset. But guess what – it works like a standard USB-C port, so you can also connect any USB-C device to it!

For compatibility with older displays, it also comes with a HDMI 2.0b port, which supports up to 4K HDR displays at up to 60 Hz… as well as a dual-linked DVI port.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER – Summary

Coming up with the RTX SUPER cards was easy for NVIDIA. They are basically cut-down versions of existing and faster graphics cards.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER (US | UK | MY) is essentially a GeForce RTX 2070 with 128 CUDA Cores disabled, but higher clock speeds to compensate.

This allows it to be almost as fast as a regular RTX 2070, just a whole lot cheaper! In fact, that was precisely why it replaced the RTX 2070, which was $100 more expensive.

But did it do the job of killing the AMD Radeon RX 5700?

In the synthetic 3DMark benchmark, the RTX 2060 SUPER is, without a doubt, far superior to the RX 5700. But in the six real world we put them through, here is a summary of the results :

  • F1 2019 : Tie
  • World War Z : Tie
  • The Division 2 : RTX 2060 SUPER is 12% faster on average.
  • Strange Brigade : RTX 2060 SUPER is 7% faster at 1080p and 1440p
  • Metro Exodus : Tie at 1080p, RX 5700 is 8% faster at 1440p, RTX 2060 SUPER is 7% faster at 2160p
  • AOTS : RX 5700 is 3-10% faster

In other words, its real world gaming performance vis-à-vis the AMD Radeon RX 5700 really depends on the game you are playing or testing.

Generally, we would say that GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER is equivalent to the Radeon RX 5700.

Recommended : The NVIDIA RTX Super vs AMD RX 5700 Comparison!

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER – Game Bundle

To fight off the challenge, AMD immediately cut the launch price of the RX 5700 to $349, which makes it $50 cheaper and therefore a better buy than the RTX 2060 SUPER.

However, NVIDIA is bundling TWO GAMES – Wolfenstein : Youngblood and Control – with each RTX SUPER card. They are worth at least $50, so there goes the AMD price advantage.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER – Our Verdict & Award!

You can’t go wrong with either card, but what we feel will tilt many buyers to choose this card over the Radeon RX 5700 would be :

[adrotate group=”2″]
  • The ability to support NVIDIA RTX in certain games for a more realistic gaming experience
  • The ability to use NVIDIA DLSS in certain games to improve image quality with minimal performance penalty
  • It has a much quieter two-fan cooler
  • It uses 10 watt less power
  • It only requires a single 8-pin power connector
  • It has a USB-C port and a dual-linked DVI port

Now, there is nothing “super” about what’s really a cut-down version of the existing GeForce RTX 2070 graphics card. What will really sell the RTX 2060 SUPER is the fact it offers a much better value proposition than the RTX 2070.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER is basically a slightly slower GeForce RTX 2070 with a $100 discount. It will deliver 16%-20% better performance than the regular RTX 2060 at just $399.

On that note, we believe it makes our grade for a Reviewer’s Choice Award. Congratulations, NVIDIA!

AORUS Aquarium PC Mod – Learn How They Did It!

The highlight of the GIGABYTE showcase at Taipei 101 was the AORUS Aquarium PC Mod! They literally put a high-end desktop PC into a fresh water aquarium of fishes! Want to know how they created the AORUS Aquarium PC mod? Read on and find out!

The AORUS Aquarium PC Mod

The AORUS Aquarium PC mod is a deceptively understated mod. At first glance, you might mistaken it for a mere display – a non-functioning GIGABYTE graphics card sitting in an aquarium. Interesting, but nothing special… until the two fans start spinning and you realise – damn, this thing is actually a fully-functional computer!

What GIGABYTE did was to submerge the PC components in clear mineral oil, before creating a small fresh water aquarium above it. You can see the fishes test water-oil boundary!

As the heat from the graphics card, CPU and other components are transferred to the mineral oil, the oil needs to be pumped out and kept cooled by three AORUS ATC700 coolers behind the bank. It’s really no different from how

GIGABYTE spared no expense in their AORUS Aquarium PC mod. They used nothing but the best they had :

The AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Processor

The AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (Price Check) processor is the top-of-the-line Ryzen 7 model. It has eight Ryzen processor cores, with a 3.7 GHz base clock, and a 4.3 GHz boost clock. It supports SMT (simultaneous multi-threading), and can therefore handle 16 threads simultaneously.

The Ryzen 7 2700X is positioned just under the Ryzen 7 1800X, which could mean a Ryzen 7 2800X is in the pipeline.

AMD Zen+ Microarchitecture

The AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (Price Check) is based on the improved AMD Zen+ microarchitecture, which delivers slightly better performance, and lower cache and memory latencies :

  • 3% more 1T IPC (instructions per second)
  • 13% lower L1 cache latency
  • 34% lower L2 cache latency
  • 16% lower L3 cache latency
  • 11% lower memory latency
  • Official support for JEDEC DDR4-2933

12 nm Process Technology

The AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (Price Check) is fabricated using the 12 nm LP (Leading Performance)  process technology from GlobalFoundries. While the die size and transistor count remain the same, the smaller transistors allow :

[adrotate group=”2″]
  • top clock speed increased by 250 MHz
  • “all core” now overclock around 4.2 GHz
  • CPU voltage is reduced by about 50 mV at all clock speeds
  • up to 11% lower power consumption, compared to 14 nm
  • up to 16% better performance per watt, compared to 14 nm

Precision Boost 2

The AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (Price Check) supports the improved Precision Boost 2, whose more graceful and linear boost algorithm allows them to “boost more cores, more often, on more workloads“. It can change frequencies in very fine granularity of just 25 MHz.

This will allow the Pinnacle Ridge processors to perform better with apps and games that spawn many lightweight threads, as opposed to apps with persistent loads (e.g. video editing and 3D rendering).

Precision Boost Overdrive

AMD will introduce Precision Boost Overdrive in the future. The motherboard will be able to communicate its actual capabilities to the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (Price Check) processor, allowing for better boost profiles and a relaxed vcore limiter with better motherboards.

3D Rendering Speed – CINEBENCH R15

CINEBENCH R15 is a real-world 3D rendering benchmark based on the MAXON Cinema 4D animation software. This is a great way to accurately determine the actual performance of a processor in 3D content creation.

CINEBENCH R15 Single Core

This Single Core test is not reflective of real world performance, but it is useful to find out the performance of the individual core.

The AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (Price Check) has a 300 MHz (7.5%) boost clock advantage over the Ryzen 7 1800X (Price Check) and Ryzen 5 1600X (Price Check) processors. However, it is 14% faster than both processors.

This is due to the internal improvements made to the 2nd Gen Ryzen processors, which almost doubled the boost clock advantage in this test. Otherwise, it would have scored only 163 cb.

CINEBENCH R15 Multi Core

The Multi-Core test shows the processor’s real-world 3D rendering performance.

With all 8 cores firing, the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (Price Check) is 11.5% faster than the Ryzen 7 1800X (Price Check). This performance advantage can be attributed to the slightly higher clock speed, XFR 2 and the internal improvements in the Zen+ microarchitecture.

[adrotate group=”1″]

Multi-Threading Boost

This is not a CINEBENCH benchmark result. The Multi-Threading Boost is our calculation of the performance boost that the processor’s Multi-Threading capability provides. It is based on the MP Ratio and the number of physical cores.

Surprisingly, the multi-threading capability of the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (Price Check) is 10% lower than that of the Ryzen 7 1800X (Price Check).

Video Transcoding Speed – HandBrake

HandBrake is a free, open-source video transcoding utility. Video transcoding basically converts a video file from one resolution / format to another. As you can imagine, it’s very compute-intensive. In our test, we converted a 4K video of 1.3 GB in size into a 1080p video (HQ1080p30).

The AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (Price Check) did very well in this test, transcoding the video 40 seconds (16%) faster than the next best processors – the Ryzen 7 1800X (Price Check), and the Intel Core i7-8700K (Price Check).

[adrotate group=”1″]

Radial Blur Speed – Photoshop CC 14

The radial blur filter adds the perception of motion to a picture. This is a compute-intensive operation that benefits from multiple processing cores. This radial blur test was performed on a single 13.5 megapixel photo, with a filesize of 4,910,867 bytes.

Look at that! The AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (Price Check) was a whopping 34% faster than the Ryzen 7 1800X (Price Check), and 39% faster than the Intel Core i7-8700K (Price Check).

Our Verdict On The AMD Ryzen 7 2700X

The AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (Price Check) is not only faster than the AMD Ryzen 7 1800X (Price Check), it is also cheaper and offers more value.

Priced at just US$ 329 / RM 1,559, the Ryzen 7 2700X is $20 cheaper, and now comes with an AMD Wraith Prism cooler! This is going to significantly impact the appeal of the 8th Generation Intel Core processors, codenamed Coffee Lake.

But make no mistake – the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (Price Check) is a refined, faster version of the AMD Ryzen 7 1800X (Price Check). It is faster and more power-efficient, but not significantly so. The Ryzen Effect forced Intel to buck the hell up, but AMD is under no pressure to do the same.

What does this mean for you?

  • If you currently own a first-generation AMD Ryzen 7 processor, it would not make much sense to upgrade to the Ryzen 7 2700X.
  • If you currently own a first-generation AMD Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 3 processor, the Ryzen 7 2700X is a good upgrade option, offering a significant boost in performance.
  • If you are using an older / slower processor (pre-Ryzen, 6th Gen Intel Core or earlier), the Ryzen 7 2700X would make a great upgrade option, with great value for your money.

What AMD brought to the table with the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (Price Check) is not shock and awe, but refinement and even more value for your money. By our books, that’s worthy of our Reviewer’s Choice Award!

The AMD Ryzen 5 2600X (Price Check) only has a 200 MHz (5%) boost clock advantage over the  Ryzen 7 1800X (Price Check) and Ryzen 5 1600X (Price Check) processors, but you can see that it is 9.2% faster than both first-generation Ryzen processors.

What this means is that the internal improvements made to the 2nd Gen Ryzen processors almost double the boost clock advantage in this test. Otherwise, it would have scored only 160 cb.

CINEBENCH R15 Multi Core

The Multi-Core test shows the processor’s real-world 3D rendering performance.

With all 6 cores firing, the AMD Ryzen 5 2600X (Price Check) is almost 10% faster than the Ryzen 5 1600X (Price Check). This performance advantage can be attributed to XFR 2 and the internal improvements in the Zen+ microarchitecture.

The AMD Ryzen 5 2600X (Price Check) has the highest MT boost, with a slight 2% advantage over the Ryzen 5 1600X (Price Check).

The AMD Ryzen 5 2600X (Price Check) did well in this test, with 13% better performance than the Ryzen 5 1600X (Price Check). We know that cache and memory performance helps a fair bit in this test, so a significant amount of that performance improvements must be due to the lower cache and memory latencies.

The CPU cache plays a very important part in this test as well. The AMD Ryzen 5 2600X (Price Check) was 15% faster than the Ryzen 5 1600X (Price Check)! It was now almost as fast as the Intel Core i7-8700K!

For Honor

We tested For Honor using the Medium settings.

1080p Gaming Resolution

The AMD Ryzen 5 2600X (Price Check) did incredibly well at this resolution. In fact, it came within 2% of the Intel Core i7-8700K!

It was 13% faster than the Ryzen 7 1800X (Price Check), and 6.6% faster than the Ryzen 5 1600X (Price Check).

1440p Gaming Resolution

The higher 1440p resolution “levelled” the playing field. The AMD Ryzen 5 2600X (Price Check) was now slightly slower than the Ryzen 7 1800X (Price Check), but also slightly than the Ryzen 5 1600X (Price Check).

2160p Gaming Resolution

At the 2160p resolution, For Honor was graphics-limited. The CPU played only a minimal role in the frame rate. The fastest processor – the AMD Ryzen 7 1800X (Price Check) only delivered a 5% higher frame rate than the slowest processor – AMD Ryzen 5 2400G.

Our Verdict On The AMD Ryzen 5 2600X

The AMD Ryzen 5 2600X (Price Check) is not only faster than its predecessor, the AMD Ryzen 5 1600X (Price Check)., it is also cheaper and offers more value.

Priced at just US$ 229 / RM 899, the Ryzen 5 2600X is $20 cheaper, and now comes with an AMD Wraith Spire cooler! This is going to significantly impact the appeal of the 8th Generation Intel Core processors, codenamed Coffee Lake.

But make no mistake – the AMD Ryzen 5 2600X (Price Check) is an evolutionary refinement of the AMD Ryzen 5 1600X (Price Check). It is faster and more power-efficient, no doubt, but not significantly so. The Ryzen Effect forced Intel to buck the hell up, but AMD is under no pressure to do the same.

What does this mean for you?

  • If you currently own a first-generation AMD Ryzen 5 processor, it would not make much sense to upgrade to the Ryzen 5 2600X.
  • If you currently own a first-generation AMD Ryzen 3 processor, the Ryzen 5 2600X is a good upgrade option, offering a significant boost in performance.
  • If you are using an older / slower processor (pre-Ryzen, 6th Gen Intel Core or earlier), the Ryzen 5 2600X would make a great upgrade option, with great value for your money.

What AMD brought to the table with the AMD Ryzen 5 2600X (Price Check) is not shock and awe, but refinement and even more value for your money. By our books, that’s worthy of our Reviewer’s Choice Award!

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Up Close

In this video, we are going to take a quick look at the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition graphics card (Price Check), and its faceted die-cast aluminium cooler.

Here are close-up pictures of the various aspects of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition graphics card (Price Check).

Unlike the GeForce GTX 1070 or GeForce GTX 1060, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti does not come with any dual-linked DVI port. It only has three DisplayPort 1.4 and one HDMI 2.0b ports. That’s where the DisplayPort to DVI adaptor comes in.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti (Price Check) has a TDP of 250 W, and requires both 8-pin and a 6-pin PCI Express power cables. It also supports the SLI HB (High Bandwidth) bridge for two-way SLI pairing.

Founder’s Edition Advantage

[adrotate group=”2″]

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition (Price Check) was designed to be the ultimate expression of NVIDIA’s gaming vision. Hence, they crafted it with premium materials and components, including a faceted die-cast aluminium-framed shroud for strength, rigidity and looks.

Aesthetics aside, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition comes with an improved cooler built around a radial fan and an improved aluminium heatsink. The new heatsink features vapour chamber cooling and has 2x the surface area.

It also boasts a 7-phase power design with 14 high-efficiency dual FETs for both GPU and memory power supplies. Coupled with a low-impedance power delivery network and custom voltage regulators, they deliver better power efficiency and overclocking headroom.

The Thermal Output

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti (Price Check) uses the NVIDIA GP102 GPU, which is fabricated on the 16 nm FinFET process. Thanks to the more efficient FinFET process, and the new NVIDIA Pascal architecture which is designed for power efficiency, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti has a TDP (Thermal Design Power) of just 250 W.

We recorded the peak exhaust temperature of the GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition, and compared it to the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) and Vega 56 (Price Check) graphics cards, as well as the older GeForce GTX 1070, GeForce GTX 1060 and Radeon RX 580 graphics cards.

Note that these are not the recorded temperatures, but how much hotter the exhaust air is above ambient temperature.

Despite having a 15% lower TDP than the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check), the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is a cooler-running card, producing 2.8°C cooler exhaust air than the previous-generation GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics card. In fact, its peak exhaust temperature was just 2.6°C hotter than the exhaust air from the Vega 56 (Price Check) graphics card.

The Noise Level

Of course, the lower exhaust temperature might be due to a more powerful, and therefore, noisier, fan. Let’s see how noisy the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition fan really is…

In the video above, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition (Price Check) was recorded while it was running the 3D Mark Time Spy benchmark. As you can hear, the fan spools up quite a bit at times, but it is still quieter than the Vega 64 (Price Check).

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition (Price Check) did very well in this DirectX 12 benchmark. It was 35% faster than the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check), 54% faster than the Vega 56 (Price Check), and 64% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070!

3DMark (1920 x 1080)

For Direct 11 performance, we started testing the graphics cards using 3DMark at the entry-level gaming resolution – 1920 x 1080.

Due to the relatively low resolution, this is a CPU-limited test for many high-end graphics cards. Even so, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti did well, delivering scores that were 26% faster than the Radeon RX Vega 64, 43% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070, and 58% faster than the Vega 56.

3DMark (2560 x 1440)

We then took 3DMark up a notch to the resolution of 2560 x 1440. Let’s take a look at the results!

The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti (Price Check) pulled away with the higher resolution. At 1440p, it was 30% faster than the Radeon RX Vega 64, 48% faster than the Radeon RX Vega 56, and 64% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070.

3DMark (3840 x 2160)

This is torture, even for the new AMD Vega 64 and Vega 56 graphics cards, but this is definitely the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti’s domain!

At this resolution, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti (Price Check) was 28% faster than the Radeon RX Vega 64, 45% faster than the Radeon RX Vega 56, and 63% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070.

Ashes of the Singularity (1920 x 1080)

We tested Ashes of the Singularity in the DirectX 12 mode, which supports the Asynchronous Compute feature. We started with the full HD resolution.

At this resolution, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti (Price Check) was 3.3% slower than the Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check), and 4.5% slower than the Vega 64 (Price Check). The two AMD Vega cards have a big advantage in AOTS, thanks to its support for Asynchronous Compute.

Ashes of the Singularity (2560 x 1440)

We then took Ashes of the Singularity up a notch to the resolution of 2560 x 1440. Let’s see how the cards fare now…

At 1440p, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti (Price Check) was virtually equal to the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 in performance, and just 2.5% faster than the Vega 56.

Ashes of the Singularity (3840 x 2160)

Finally, let’s see how the cards perform with Ashes of the Singularity running at the Ultra HD resolution of 3840 x 2160.

Only at the 4K resolution did the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti pull away from the two AMD Vega cards. Even so, it was just 4% faster than the Radeon RX Vega 64, and 16% faster than the Radeon RX Vega 56. It completely outclassed the GeForce GTX 1060 and the Radeon RX 580, beating both by 75%!

Warhammer (1920 x 1080)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, recorded by Total War : Warhammer‘s internal DirectX 12 benchmark.

All six graphics cards were so fast, they were CPU-limited at this resolution. But we can already see that support for Asynchronous Compute gave the new AMD Vega cards a major performance advantage. They actually beat the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti by 6-8%!
