This is what NVIDIA says about RTX gaming on Cyberpunk 2077 :
The minimum GPU for Ray Tracing, at 1920×1080, is the GeForce RTX 2060. Gamers will explore Night City with Medium Ray Tracing Preset powered by DLSS.
At 2560×1440, we recommend a GeForce RTX 3070 or GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. Ray tracing is taken to Ultra, which greatly increases the fidelity of the aforementioned effects, and the distance at which they are visible, while DLSS provides boosted frame rates with uncompromised image quality.
And with rasterized settings also being cranked to Ultra, GeForce RTX 3070 and 2080 Ti gamers receive an incredible experience at the highest detail levels, unmatched by any other platform.
And finally, if you’re playing at 4K or beyond, the GeForce RTX 3080 and GeForce RTX 3090 deliver the performance to play Cyberpunk 2077 with ray tracing at Ultra at this incredibly demanding resolution.
Both GPUs are powered by Ampere — NVIDIA’s 2nd gen RTX architecture — with dedicated RT Cores for ray tracing, and Tensor Cores for DLSS AI acceleration, delivering an unrivaled cinematic-quality experience.

NVIDIA spiked the AMD Radeon RX 5700 launch party by first teasing, and then launching the GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER.
A cut-down version of the GeForce RTX 2070, it comes with 2176 stream processors and 8 GB of GDDR6 memory, at a $100 lower price point!
How will it match up against the new Radeon RX 5700, and its predecessor, the RTX 2060? Let’s find out!
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER Primer
Designed to extend NVIDIA’s performance lead against the new AMD Navi-based graphics cards, the NVIDIA RTX SUPER graphics cards are based on cut-down versions of existing GeForce RTX models.
The GeForce RTX 2060 survives to remain the cheapest RTX card you can buy, while the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti remains the most powerful RTX graphics card that money can buy.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER Price + Availability
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER (US | UK | MY) has a launch price that starts at $399 / ~£314 / ~€351 / ~RM 1,649, just $50 more than the GeForce RTX 2060.
Here are some direct purchase links and prices of various AIB custom cards (prices accurate as of 18 August 2019) :
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER (US | UK | MY) comes in a large cardboard box that doubles as a stand. Let’s take a quick look around, and see what we find inside!
As you can see, it basically comes with just a Quick Start Guide, and a Support Guide. Nothing else.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER Hands On!
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER (US | UK | MY) has an NVIDIA TU106 GPU with 2176 stream processors.
This gives it 136 TMUs and 64 ROPS, delivering a peak output of 224 GT/s and 106 GP/s, thanks to its higher clock speeds.
Its 8 GB of GDDR6 memory runs at a speed of 1750 MHz, giving it a peak memory bandwidth of 448 GB/s.
Even though the TU106 GPU is fabricated on the 12 nm process technology, the card only needs 175 watts of power.
NVIDIA Turing
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX SUPER series continues to use the NVIDIA Turing microarchitecture, the first to introduce real-time ray tracing capabilities and new Tensor Cores.
It also continues to benefit from NVIDIA DLSS (Deep Learning Super-Sampling), which can be used to deliver better than TAA quality with a significantly lower performance penalty, or much better image quality – equivalent to 64X super sampling.

RTX 2060 SUPER Power Requirements
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER (US | UK | MY) is a cut-down version of the GeForce RTX 2070, so it comes to no surprise that it would require 175 watts of power as well.
Like the GeForce RTX 2070, you will need a power supply with an 8-pin PCI Express power cable.
RTX 2060 SUPER Display Ports
Surprisingly, it comes with a wide variety of display options. It has two DisplayPort 1.4 ports, that allows it to support up to 8K HDR resolution at 60 Hz, or 4K HDR at 120 Hz or more.
There is also a tiny USB-C VirtualLink port, which allows you to connect a VR headset. But guess what – it works like a standard USB-C port, so you can also connect any USB-C device to it!
For compatibility with older displays, it also comes with a HDMI 2.0b port, which supports up to 4K HDR displays at up to 60 Hz… as well as a dual-linked DVI port.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER – Summary
Coming up with the RTX SUPER cards was easy for NVIDIA. They are basically cut-down versions of existing and faster graphics cards.
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER (US | UK | MY) is essentially a GeForce RTX 2070 with 128 CUDA Cores disabled, but higher clock speeds to compensate.
This allows it to be almost as fast as a regular RTX 2070, just a whole lot cheaper! In fact, that was precisely why it replaced the RTX 2070, which was $100 more expensive.
In the synthetic 3DMark benchmark, the RTX 2060 SUPER is, without a doubt, far superior to the RX 5700. But in the six real world we put them through, here is a summary of the results :
F1 2019 : Tie
World War Z : Tie
The Division 2 : RTX 2060 SUPER is 12% faster on average.
Strange Brigade : RTX 2060 SUPER is 7% faster at 1080p and 1440p
Metro Exodus : Tie at 1080p, RX 5700 is 8% faster at 1440p, RTX 2060 SUPER is 7% faster at 2160p
AOTS : RX 5700 is 3-10% faster
In other words, its real world gaming performance vis-à-vis the AMD Radeon RX 5700 really depends on the game you are playing or testing.
Generally, we would say that GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER is equivalent to the Radeon RX 5700.
To fight off the challenge, AMD immediately cut the launch price of the RX 5700 to $349, which makes it $50 cheaper and therefore a better buy than the RTX 2060 SUPER.
However, NVIDIA is bundling TWO GAMES – Wolfenstein : Youngblood and Control – with each RTX SUPER card. They are worth at least $50, so there goes the AMD price advantage.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER – Our Verdict & Award!
You can’t go wrong with either card, but what we feel will tilt many buyers to choose this card over the Radeon RX 5700 would be :
[adrotate group=”2″]
The ability to support NVIDIA RTX in certain games for a more realistic gaming experience
The ability to use NVIDIA DLSS in certain games to improve image quality with minimal performance penalty
It has a much quieter two-fan cooler
It uses 10 watt less power
It only requires a single 8-pin power connector
It has a USB-C port and a dual-linked DVI port
Now, there is nothing “super” about what’s really a cut-down version of the existing GeForce RTX 2070 graphics card. What will really sell the RTX 2060 SUPER is the fact it offers a much better value proposition than the RTX 2070.
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER is basically a slightly slower GeForce RTX 2070 with a $100 discount. It will deliver 16%-20% better performance than the regular RTX 2060 at just $399.
On that note, we believe it makes our grade for a Reviewer’s Choice Award. Congratulations, NVIDIA!

All Dell G7 15 gaming laptops come with a free Dell Gaming Backpack 15, and free shipping.
Unboxing The Dell G7 15 (7588)
The 2018 Dell G7 15 (7588) gaming laptop comes in a nondescript brown Dell cardboard box. The two labels on the side are the only clues of what lies inside. Let’s unbox it and see what we find inside!
When you unbox the Dell G7 15 gaming laptop, you will find the following items :
One Dell G7 15 (7588) gaming laptop
One 180 watt AC/DC power adaptor
One power cable with a localised power plug
One set of Dell G7 15 Quick User Guide, and Safety and Regulatory Information leaflet

Despite its gaming chops and beefed-up cooling system, Dell engineers managed to keep it under an inch thick, and under 3 kg in weight. That’s with a larger 4-cell 56 WHrs battery.
Dell G7 15 Key Features
Now, let’s take a closer look at the key features of the 2018 Dell G7 15 (7588) gaming laptop.
Unlike many gaming laptops, the Dell uses an IPS panel with a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. That means better colour and a wider viewing angle, at the expense of a longer response time and higher cost.
It has an anti-glare coating, but lacks a higher refresh rate or anti-tear technologies like NVIDIA G-SYNC or AMD FreeSync. What this means is – your games will look great, but you will have to live with a longer response time, and some tearing in FPS games.
At the top of the display is a wide-angle 720p webcam with a dual-array digital microphone.
[adrotate group=”1″]
Dual-Tone Colour Scheme
The 2018 Dell D7 15 (7588) comes in two colour options – Alpine White or Licorice Black. The Alpine White colour option is the more interesting of the two, because it is a dual-tone colour scheme. It has a white top and sides, with a black underside.
Licorice Black is a more professional-looking colour option. It’s plain black, like most business laptops, allowing you to game while pretending to work hard at the office… 😉

More Dell G7 15 Key Features
Keyboard + Touch Pad
The Dell G7 15 (7588) gaming laptop comes with a full-sized keyboard with a numeric keypad. The keys are all back-lit in blue, with the WASD keys specially-highlighted.
It also comes with a rather large touch pad, which is oddly offset to the left. The offset touch pad makes it a bit harder to use, but let’s be frank – no sane gamer would be using the touch pad.
Fingerprint Sensor
The Dell G7 15 (7588) gaming laptop has a touch fingerprint sensor built into the power button.
Like current smartphone fingerprint sensors, it is fast and supports all-aspect fingerprint detection, making it really easy to log into Windows, and start gaming!
Connectivity Options
The Dell G7 15 (7588) gaming laptop comes with a plethora of connectivity options. On the left side, you will find a Noble lock slot, the power port, an RJ-45 LAN port, a USB 3.1 Gen 1 port and an SD card reader.
On the right side, you will find a 3.5 mm audio port, two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports, a single USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C / Thunderbolt 3 port, and a HDMI 2.0 port.
On the wireless side, it supports dual-band 802.11ac WiFi with Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity.
Dual Drive Storage
Our Dell G7 15 (7588) gaming laptop came with dual storage drives – a fast 256 GB Toshiba KSG60ZMV256G NVMe SSD and a 1 TB Seagate ST1000LM035 hard disk drive with a 5,400 RPM spindle speed.
Right out of the box, the SSD drive has 188 GB of available storage, while the hard disk drive has 931 GB of available storage.
Dell offers a smaller 128 GB SSD option, but we highly recommend sticking with the 256 GB SSD because you will run out of space pretty quickly on the 128 GB, and the SSD loads games much faster than the 5400 RPM hard disk drive.

Dell G7 16 Battery Life
[adrotate group=”2″]
The Dell G7 15 (7588) gaming laptop comes with a 4-cell, 56 WHr lithium-ion battery. It supports quick-charging, allowing you to recharge 25% of its capacity in just 15 minutes.
Our review model came with a larger and more powerful 180 watt charger. The lower-end models that use the GeForce GTX 1050 or GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics come with a 130 watt charger instead.
What’s truly impressive is how long it lasted. When we tested its predecessor, the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming, we only managed to game for 45 minutes. The mobile gaming time has more than double with the 2018 Dell G7 15 – we played for just over 2 hours!
Dell G7 15 Gaming Performance
On Battery
We tested the Dell G7 15 running on battery, and it delivered 2,822 on the 3DMark FireStrike test.
This is not a very good score, but it is the secret of how the Dell G7 15 managed to last 2 hours of gaming.
On Main Power
If you really want the Dell G7 15 to roar, plug it into the main power, and it more than triples its gaming performance. Specifically, it scores 9,916 on the 3DMark FireStrike test – 3.5X higher than on battery power!
Our Verdict
The Dell G7 15 (7588) gaming laptop is a refreshing new approach by Dell. Instead of tacking onto the Inspiron line, they rebranded it under the new Dell G line, with a new design.
It now sports a new sleeker design, with beefed-up gaming and cooling performance. Its hexa-core Core i7-8750H processor and GeForce GTX 1060 Max-Q graphics is more than fast enough to deliver high frame rates on its full HD display.
Dell also went with an IPS panel, when many gaming laptops opt for TN panels with a high refresh rate and a low response time. This means you will enjoy better colours and a wide viewing angle, which is great if you do more than just game.
The Dell G7 15 checks off many of the standard gaming features – a backlit keyboard, a solid state drive for fast boot-ups and game loads, a pair of decent speakers, and fast wired and wireless connectivity. To top it off – it has a longer-lasting battery – good enough for about 2 hours of gameplay.
Of course, there are tons of other gaming laptops with the same specifications. What’s really impressive though is its affordability. Even this top-of-the-line model costs less than RM 7,000 / ~US$ 1,750. This is a great deal for those who want to enjoy gaming on-the-go, but could not afford a decent gaming laptop.
The Dell G7 15 (7588) gaming laptop is designed to offer an affordable combination of gaming performance, and they didn’t appear to cut too many corners to do it. That’s why we think it deserves our Reviewer’s Choice Award. Congratulations, Dell!

Through AURA Sync, RGB lighting can be customized across seven zones: four for the keyboard, two located within the light bar stretching across the front edge, and the last one within the ROG logo on the lid. The lights can then sync to Aura Sync-enabled peripherals such as the Strix Fusion 700 headset and the Gladius II Origin mouse.
Gaming Keyboard with Overstroke Technology
The keyboard on the ROG Strix SCAR II (US | UK | MY) has a desktop-style layout, with a wider space bar and separated blocks of function keys to make shortcuts easier to execute. The keyboard’s switches are rated for 20 million key presses, and Overstroke technology allows them to fire halfway through the 1.8 mm key travel for a faster response than traditional designs that actuate lower in the stroke.
Gaming On-The-Go
Powered by up to the Intel Core i7-8750H processor, the ROG Strix SCAR II (US | UK | MY) offers up to 6 cores and 12 threads of processing capability, coupled with the graphics capability of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060,
To ensure optimal mobile gaming experience, the Strix SCAR II comes with Intel’s latest 802.11ac Wave 2 Wi-Fi delivering wireless connectivity at up to 1.73 Gbps. It also comes with four USB Type-A ports, a reversible USB Type-C (USB-C) port, a Mini DisplayPort port, and a full-size HDMI 2.0 port.
Internal storage comes in the form of a fast M.2 NVMe SSD that loads games and applications in the blink of an eye, with an optional secondary 1TB solid-state hybrid drive (SSHD) for additional storage.
HyperCool Pro Cooling Technology
[adrotate group=”2″]
The ROG Strix SCAR II (US | UK | MY) boasts the HyperCool Pro cooling system, which keeps everything running cool using three heatsinks and two fans.
One heatsink is linked exclusively to the GPU, to ensure it is kept cool even in the most demanding gaming session. The other two heatsinks are shared to ensure efficient cooling performance of both CPU and GPU.
Each heatsink has thin copper fins, that allows more fins to be fitted, increasing the surface area for heat dissipation while reducing resistance to airflow. Patented trapezoid cuts in the lid ensure that the flow of hot air out the exhaust vents at the back is not impeded.

ASUS TUF Gaming FX505 Red Matter
Tough Gaming Keyboard
The keyboard has 1.8 mm of key travel, and the exclusive ASUS Overstroke technology that raises the actuation point higher in the stroke to improve responsiveness. The key caps are also dished, with isolated arrow, and defined gaps for the function keys.
Backlighting is offered in either customizable RGB (Gold Steel), or a red glow that matches the chassis accents of the Red Fusion and Red Matter variants.
Immersive Audio
Audio also plays an important role in delivering high-quality, immersive gaming experiences. DTS Headphone:Xtechnology is integrated so that over headphones or speakers, preset profiles for games, movies, music, and sports can produce tailored audio experiences for every situation.
ASUS TUF Gaming FX505 Red Fusion
Fast WAN + LAN
The TUF Gaming FX505 comes with a Gigabit Ethernet port for no-compromise gamers, as well as Intel’s latest 2×2 MIMO 802.11ac Wave 2 WiFi, capable of making connections at speeds of up to 1.73Gbps to compatible routers.
TUF and built to last
The TUF Gaming FX505 is built to withstand abuse. It has been put through rigorous quality and durability tests that exceed industry standards, passing even the demanding military-grade MIL-STD-810G test for sudden jolts. The HyperStrike keyboard uses switches rated for 20 million key presses, while the reinforced chassis and hexagonal design on the bottom add structural rigidity to make it even sturdier.
ASUS TUF Gaming FX505 Gold Steel
Superior and long-lasting cooling
[adrotate group=”2″]
The TUF Gaming FX505 features the HyperCool system, with independent fans and heatsinks to cool the CPU and GPU separately.
The design also places the fans directly underneath the keyboard to help remove heat, keeping the keyboard cool and comfortable during extended gameplay sessions. The patented trapezoid-cut lid allows more air to be ejected from the rear, improving cooling performance by up to 25% over other designs.
Cooling performance can degrade over time, with dust and particle build-up impeding airflow through thermal fin. So patented ASUS dust tunnels help to guide dust and particles off to a separate chamber to be ejected from the system, keeping the thermal fins clear for stable long-term cooling performance.

The AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 Up Close
The AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) looks exactly like Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check). In fact, the only way to tell them apart is a small label at the back of the card. Let’s take a quick tour of the Vega 64 up close!
AMD dumped the dual-linked DVI port starting with the Radeon RX 480. So it’s no surprise to see that the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) lacks a dual-linked DVI port. It has three DisplayPorts and a single HDMI 2.0b port instead.

The Vega 64 Power Consumption
The AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) uses the Vega 10 GPU with 12.5 billion transistors fabricated using the 14 nm FinFET process technology. That’s 500 million transistors more than the NVIDIA GP102 GPU powering the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti.
Even though it’s using a finer process technology than NVIDIA, the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) has a significantly higher TDP of 295 W – 45 W (18%) more than the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti.
AMD equipped the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) with two 8-pin PCI Express power connectors for a peak power draw of 375 W. This will come in handy if you intend to overclock, although keeping the GPU cool will be a challenge.
GPUTach
There is a GPUTach LED light strip right next to the two 8-pin PCI Express power connectors, which tells you the GPU load at a glance. There are two switches nearby that allows you to turn it on or off, and switch between the red and blue LED colours.
Note that these are not the recorded temperatures, but how much hotter the exhaust air is above ambient temperature.
With its higher TDP, it’s no surprise that the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) has the highest exhaust temperature in this comparison – 2.8 °C higher than the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, and 5.4 °C higher than Vega 56 (Price Check).

Mass Effect: Andromeda (1920 x 1080)
Mass Effect: Andromeda is another game that supports Asynchronous Compute. This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, that FRAPS recorded in Mass Effect: Andromeda.
All six cards did well, delivering average frame rates in excess of 70 fps. In fact, the higher-end cards – the GeForce GTX 1070 onwards – were obviously CPU-limited at this resolution.
Thanks to Asynchronous Compute, the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) was able to beat the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti by 7%, albeit at this low resolution. It was also 11% faster than the Vega 56 (Price Check), and 12% faster than the GTX 1070.

Mass Effect: Andromeda (3840 x 2160)
This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, that FRAPS recorded in Mass Effect: Andromeda.
Increasing the resolution to 4K UHD greatly sapped the average frame rate of all six cards. Only GeForce GTX 1080 Ti managed to achieve an average frame rate of about 60 fps. It was now 48% faster than the Vega 64 (Price Check).
The Vega 64, on the other hand, was 10% faster than the GTX 1070, and 16% faster than the Vega 56 (Price Check).

Our Verdict
Ever since we saw AMD Vega running DOOM, we had such high hopes for it. The success of the AMD Ryzen family of processors only buoyed that optimism. However, the AMD Vega turned out not to be the Pascal-killer we thought it would be.
On paper, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) has considerable advantages over even the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. It has a 34% advantage in texture fill rate, and a 51% advantage in memory bandwidth. The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti only beats it in pixel fill rate by 20%.
In real life though, the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) was significantly slower than the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti… unless the game supports Asynchronous Compute. In those DirectX 12 games, the Vega 64 actually beats the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, albeit at lower resolutions.
Of course, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti costs more than the Vega 64, but it bears reminding that numbers on paper do not always translate into real world performance. It also showcases how important certain software features are in delivering better performance.
[adrotate group=”2″]
At $499, the Vega 64 (Price Check) is frankly a bit overpriced, because it is, on average, 13% faster than the Vega 56 (Price Check), which is $100 (20%) cheaper! The price would become even harder to justify when NVIDIA launches the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti for just $429.
The Radeon RX Vega 64 also has the disadvantage of a significantly higher power consumption at 295 watts. It also requires at least a 750W power supply with two 8-pin PCI Express power cables.
That said, the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) is a step in the right direction. It is about 51% faster (on average) than the Radeon RX 580, which is based on the last generation AMD Polaris architecture. It may not have met our overly high expectations, but it is still a big improvement.
If you want a graphics card for 1440p gaming today, the Vega 56 (Price Check) or GTX 1070 offer better value. But if you want a graphics card for 1440p gaming with more headroom for future games, then the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) makes sense.

The AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 Up Close
The AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) looks exactly like the AMD Radeon RX 480, just longer. It has the same black shroud design that debuted with that Polaris-based card.
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 still offers a dual-linked DVI port, but the AMD Radeon RX Vega skips that for three DisplayPorts and a single HDMI 2.0b port.

Power Consumption
The AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) uses the Vega 10 GPU with 12.5 billion transistors fabricated using the 14 nm FinFET process technology. Even though it’s using a finer process technology than NVIDIA, the extra 5.3 billion transistors need more power.
Hence, the Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) has a TDP of 210 W – 60 W (40%) more than the GeForce GTX 1070. On a watt per transistor basis, this makes the Radeon RX Vega 56 is 24% more efficient than the GeForce GTX 1070. Of course, what matters more is power efficiency on a watt / performance basis.
Curiously, AMD equipped the Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) with not one, but two 8-pin PCI Express power connectors for a peak power draw of 375 W.
Incidentally, there is a GPUTach LED light strip right next to the two 8-pin PCI Express power connectors, which tells you the GPU load at a glance. There are two switches nearby that allows you to turn it on or off, and switch between the red and blue LED colours.
Note that these are not the recorded temperatures, but how much hotter the exhaust air is above ambient temperature.
Despite its much higher TDP, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56’s exhaust temperature is just slightly higher than that of the GeForce GTX 1070. That is likely because it uses a more powerful fan with a larger heatsink.

Our Verdict
Ever since we saw AMD Vega running DOOM, we had such high hopes for it. The success of the AMD Ryzen family of processors only buoyed that optimism. However, the AMD Vega turned out not to be the Pascal-killer we thought it would be.
On paper, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) has considerable advantages over the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070. It has a 53% advantage in texture fill rate, and a 60% advantage in memory bandwidth. The GeForce GTX 1070 only beats it in pixel fill rate by 22%.
In real life though, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) was virtually equal in performance to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070. In some games, the Radeon RX Vega 56 was slightly faster. In other games, the GeForce GTX 1070 was slightly faster.
[adrotate group=”2″]
Hence, it’s no wonder AMD priced it at $399 – just $20 more than the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070. It would be hard to justify a higher price, especially since the GeForce GTX 1070 is already a year old!
Even though the AMD Vega GPU was built using the smaller 14 nm process technology, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) uses considerably more power because it has significantly more transistors. It has a maximum TDP of 210 W – 60 W (40%) higher than the GeForce GTX 1070.
Earlier, we pointed out that the Radeon RX Vega 56 is 24% more efficient than the GeForce GTX 1070 on a watt per transistor basis. However, the GeForce GTX 1070 is ultimately about 40% more efficient in terms of watt / performance, which is ultimately what really matters.
That said, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) is a step in the right direction. It is almost 50% faster (on average) than the Radeon RX 480, which used the last generation AMD Polaris architecture. It may not have met our overly high expectations, but it is still a big improvement.
After all, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check finally offers AMD fans 1440p gaming at 60 fps at a sweet price point!

It is a new design approach that allows gaming laptops to be thinner, quieter and yet, faster. How is this possible? Let’s find out!
The NVIDIA Max-Q Design Tech Briefing
Max Q is actually a NASA term which refers to “the point at which aerodynamic stress on a vehicle in atmospheric flight is maximized“. NVIDIA Max-Q uses a similar philosophy to design gaming laptops that are 3X thinner, with up to 3X more performance (compared to the previous-generation NVIDIA Maxwell GPUs).
So what exactly is the NVIDIA Max-Q design, and how does it work? Gaurav Agarwal, NVIDIA Product Marketing Manager, explains it all in this tech briefing.
Here is a summary of the NVIDIA Max-Q design’s key features :
NVIDIA Max-Q is built around NVIDIA Pascal, specifically the GeForce GTX 1080, 1070 and 1060 GPUs.
The key design philosophy is a new focus on peak efficiency, instead of peak performance.
Instead of running at maximum frequency, the GPU will run at a lower frequency that has been determined to achieve peak efficiency.
This greatly reduces the GPU’s power consumption and thermal output, at the expense of some performance.
In the case of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080, the Max-Q version will run 60 W cooler (90 W, instead of 150 W) while suffering only a 10% reduction in performance.
The massive reduction in the TGP (Total Graphics Power) allows a more powerful GPU like the GeForce GTX 1080 in a thinner laptop.
The lower TGP also allows for the use of thinner, lighter and quieter cooling solutions, and a longer battery life.
From what we understand, the Max-Q and non Max-Q GPUs are the same. The Max-Q version just uses firmware that has been tuned for efficiency, instead of performance.
The NVIDIA WhisperMode Technology
[adrotate group=”2″]
NVIDIA also introduced the new NVIDIA WhisperMode technology, which will be available by the end of June 2017.
Although not technically part of NVIDIA Max-Q, it helps to make the laptop run much quieter while you’re gaming.
WhisperMode intelligently paces the game’s frame rate while automatically adjusting the graphics setting for optimal power efficiency. This reduces reduces the laptop’s acoustic level during games.
NVIDIA WhisperMode is completely user-adjustable via GeForce Experience, and will be available for all NVIDIA Pascal-based laptops.
Availability Of NVIDIA Max-Q Gaming Laptops
Gaming laptops featuring GeForce GTX 1080, 1070 and 1060 GPUs using the new NVIDIA Max-Q design will be available starting June 27, 2017 from brands like Acer, Aftershock, Alienware, ASUS, Clevo, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, and MSI.
The first three gaming laptops to feature NVIDIA Max-Q are the ASUS Zephyrus, MSI GS63 and the Clevo P950.
