Neffos X9 vs Huawei nova 2 lite – Which Is The Better Deal?

TP-Link just launched the new Neffos X9 smartphone, which is being targeted squarely at the Huawei nova 2 lite. Let’s compare them both and see which is the better deal!

Neffos X9 vs Huawei nova 2 lite

The Neffos X9 (Price Check) and Huawei nova 2 lite (Price Check) are both mid-range smartphones with 5.99-inch displays, and a dual-lens main camera. But are they really that similar? Let’s take a closer look…

Display : Neffos X9

Both the Neffos X9 (Price Check) and the Huawei nova 2 lite (Price Check) come with a 5.99-inch FullView IPS display, with a resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels, and a pixel density of 259 pixels per inch.

But the Neffos X9’s display has two additional advantages :

  • it can dim to just 2 nits, allowing you to read and watch movies with minimal glare in the dark.
  • it has an Eye Protection Mode that reduces blue light emission by up to 89%, reducing eyestrain in low light conditions.

Performance : Tie

The Neffos X9 (Price Check) runs on the MediaTek MT6750, while the Huawei nova 2 lite (Price Check) uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430.

They both have octa-core ARM Cortex-A53 processors of roughly the same performance.

Memory + Storage : Tie

Both the Neffos X9 (Price Check) and the Huawei nova 2 lite (Price Check) come with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. They also have the option of adding a microSD card for extra storage.

Front Camera : Tie

Both devices have an 8 MP front camera with flash support.

The Neffos X9 (Price Check) features a soft light flash, which prevents harsh lights and creates more natural-looking selfies.

The Huawei nova 2 lite (Price Check), on the other hand, has a flash that automatically adjusts the brightness level according to the ambient light.

Main Camera : Neffos X9

Both Neffos X9 and Huawei nova 2 lite feature a high-resolution camera with a depth sensor that allows for more accurate bokeh effects. But the Neffos X9’s main camera is superior in many aspects :

  • Its faster f/2.0 lens allows for better low-light performance
  • Its higher resolution 5 MP depth sensor is better at depth-sensing
  • Its dual-tone LED flash delivers more natural skin tones

Wireless Connectivity : Neffos X9

Both Neffos X9 (Price Check) and Huawei nova 2 lite (Price Check) support the WiFi-N standard. However, the Neffos X9 has a key advantage – it supports dual band connectivity on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. This is important for two reasons :

  • the 2.4 GHz has a longer range and better penetrates walls, but is prone to interference from nearby devices, like microwave machines, cordless phones and baby monitors.
  • The 5 GHz band has a shorter range, but offers much better transfer speeds.

Wireless performance is also greatly improved when data can be transferred over both bands, instead of just one band. So there is no doubt that the X9 is the clear winner in this aspect.

Price : Neffos X9

With its superior set of features, you may expect the Neffos X9 to be more expensive. Surprisingly, it is actually CHEAPER than the Huawei nova 2i lite.

The Neffos X9 (Price Check) is only priced at RM 599 / ~US$ 149, while the nova 2i lite costs RM 659 / ~US$ 165.

Our Verdict : Neffos X9 Is The Obvious Choice

Both the Neffos X9 and the Huawei nova 2 lite are very compelling devices. They are highly-affordable, and yet, offer a ton of features with performance levels unheard of only a few years ago.

Yet, if you have to choose between the two, the Neffos X9 (Price Check) would be the obvious choice. Not only does it offer a superior set of features, it is actually cheaper. Hard to beat such a combination!

Embodying the perfection of 0.2 seconds, the X Series is made to fulfill the needs of consumers’ that desire fast-paced connectivity and interactivity. With a rear camera of 13-megapixel Sony sensor with backside illumination and 5P lens system as well as fast PDAF (phase-detection auto-focus) accurately by 0.2 seconds, the X series makes capturing precious moments similar to blinking an eye.

Giving the picture-taking more quality, the camera also features an f/2.0 aperture lens for taking clearer shots in low light and providing a shallow of depth of field. Worry no-more about low light photography, because the Neffos X series also comes with Real-time Night shooting, dual-tone flash can light up even the darkest subjects therefore making your night images clear as daylight.

In addition, the camera also include the standard features such as HDR, Time Lapse, and Panorama. INSPIRED DESIGN

Stylishly sleek and built with premium materials, the Neffos X1 and X1 Max features metallic body exterior that was inspired by the rocks found in streams — smoothed by the water over time without losing their mettle. Every detail has been refined to make the phones look and feel familiar, and give consumers the best user experience.

One highlight of the design is the dual-curved back that tapers towards the sides and allows for a more ergonomic fit. The subtle curves also makes the X series easier to hold and operate one-handed compared to other devices of similar size.

The Neffos X series also have super-thin bezels of up to 2.75mm[1], and smooth, chamfered edges that measure only 0.6mm. With the length of the phones kept to a minimum, screen-to-body ratio is high at 76 percent.

The screen makes use of full in-cell technology with “touch and display driver integration” (TDDI), which is light and 0.2mm thinner than the usual lamination used on other smartphones. It also provides high control precision in games and apps, and seamless screen integration for much improved image quality while also extending battery life.

A 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass sits on top of the X1 Max’s display to make swiping through screens feel natural. The X1 Max display — gorgeous at 5.5 inches — has a high, 1,800:1 color contrast for best-in-class entertainment. Colors are rendered with utmost accuracy and vibrancy. Details are sharp and viewing angles are excellent even at awkward angles. The Neffos X series device are perfect for playing graphics-rich games and watching TV shows and movies.

TP-LINK Neffos C5 Smartphone Review

TP-LINK may be the largest global manufacturer of WiFi networking products, but they aren’t resting on their laurels. Instead of fighting for an even bigger share of the same pie, they decided to branch out into the smartphone market with the Neffos C5 and Neffos C5L smartphones in March of 2016.

At that time, the Neffos C5 was considered to be quite a decent entry-level smartphone. Priced at just RM 539 / US$ 135, it offers quite a lot of features in a 5″ smartphone. Today, we are going to take a look at the TP-LINK Neffos C5 and see how it stacks up against the competition.

But first, let’s compare the specifications of the Neffos C5 against the lower-end Neffos C5L.

Neffos C5 Key Features Primer

Setting Up The Neffos C5

It’s Alive!

The Neffos C5 has a bright and sharp 5″ IPS display, with a resolution of 720 x 1280. The display is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass, which offers it significant scratch and shatter resistance. However, it lacks an oleophobic coating, which means it’s very easily smudged.

The Neffos C5 has a polycarbonate back with a smooth matte finish, that is resistant to smudges. As you can see, it fits well in our Asian-sized hand and is small enough for single-handed use. In case you are wondering, it is 7.2 cm wide, 14.4 cm tall and 8.8 mm thick.

Available Memory & Storage

The Neffos C5 comes with 2 GB of memory, which is very decent at its price point. About half of that is available for your apps. Plenty enough for multiple apps running at the same time. Very nice.

The Neffos C5 also comes with 16 GB of internal flash memory. Once you deduct 9.65 GB for the Android 5.1 operating system and apps, you have 9.44 GB of free space left to use. That is pretty decent actually, allowing you to store about 2,400 photos, or record 74 minutes of 1080p video.

[adrotate banner=”5″]

Dual SIM & microSD Slots

The Neffos C5 has dual SIM, dual standby capability. It also has a microSD slot that supports microSD cards with capacities up to 32 GB. All three slots are located next to the removable 2,200 mAh battery. Yes, you will need to remove the battery before inserting a SIM card or a microSD card.

Cameras

The Neffos C5 has pretty decent cameras for its price point. Its front camera has a 5 MP sensor, while the rear camera has an 8 MP sensor with a dual-tone flash. The rear camera is capable of taking photos with a resolution of 3264 x 2448 and 1080p videos in the 3GP file format.

The camera software is quite limited in its capabilities. It offers a number of filters and 6 scene modes (including HDR). However, you are not given any option to change the camera settings.

Camera Performance

The Neffos C5’s main camera has pretty decent performance. It has good control of exposure and white balance. Even though there is a fair bit noise in areas that are poorly lit, they only appear on close examination.

[adrotate banner=”5″]

Video Recording Performance

The Neffos C5’s main camera records video only in full HD (1080p) mode. It does not support image stabilisation, as far as we can tell. We offer the following two video recording samples for your perusal.

The first sample is a video recording of an Arabic dance. Even though the Neffos C5 recorded it in 1080p resolution, it appears blur. It seems to have trouble focusing on the subject. The lack of any image stabilisation did not help either, because the C5 was held with one hand.

The second sample is a video recording of ice skaters. This time, we used two hands to stabilise it. The difference is very apparent. However, there still appears to be auto-focusing issues – you can see the camera “seek” many times.

Generally, the Neffos C5’s video recording capabilities were quite disappointing. Recording in full HD is pointless if the camera has trouble focusing. The end result is poor picture quality in high resolution.

Work Performance : PCMark

We tested the Neffos C5‘s performance using PCMark, which simulates work applications like web browing, playing video, writing text and editing photos.

Photo Editing 3505 3804 2614

The Neffos C5 did well in this regard, considering the fact that it is only powered by a quad-core MediaTek MT6735. In comparison, the Alcatel Flash 2 (Amazon) uses the octa-core MediaTek MT6753, while the honor 5X (Amazon) is powered by the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 616.

Battery Performance – PCMark

We then tested the Neffos C5’s battery performance using PCMark. It basically ran the PCMark work tests until its battery capacity dropped to 20%.

The Neffos C5 did well in this test, lasting 9 hours and 45 minutes. It beat Alcatel Flash 2 (Amazon) by 1.5 hours (18.5%), and the honor 5X (Amazonby 1 hour and 12 minutes (15%).

Battery Recharging Performance

The Neffos C5 has a removable 2,200 mAh lithium-ion battery, but it does not have Fast Charging capability. In fact, it only comes with a 5 W travel charger. Even so, it was able to recharge its battery pretty quickly.

Our tests showed that the Neffos C5 can recharge its battery from 18% to 100% in just over 156 minutes (2 hours 36 minutes).

As a low-cost smartphone, it comes to no surprise that the Neffos C5 isn’t terribly good at gaming. Not only does it only have 4 CPU cores, it only comes with the ARM Mali-T720 MP2 GPU running at 450 MHz. It’s good enough for 2D games though.

Our Verdict

The Neffos C5 is TP-LINK’s first attempt to penetrate the smartphone market with an affordable smartphone. Launched with a recommended retail price of just RM 539 / US$ 135, this is a smartphone that everyone can afford.

To keep costs low, TP-LINK opted for a quad-core MediaTek MT6735 SoC, a HD display and a relatively small battery. But they focused on what really counts – an IPS panel for the display, 2 GB of RAM and pretty decent cameras.

Even though the MediaTek MT6735 is rather dated, it held up well in our benchmarks. It’s really fast enough for basic smartphone tasks and 2D gaming. Even its small 2,200 mAh battery did better than expected, delivering almost 10 hours of non-stop usage!

Thanks to its IPS panel, it has a bright and sharp display with wide viewing angles. It is even protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. The only downside? It doesn’t have an oleophobic coating, so it smears at the touch of your fingertip!

Its main camera was a bit of a mixed bag. The main camera takes pretty decent pictures, with pretty good control of the exposure and white balance. However, the videos it records suffer from auto-focus issues and a lack of image stabilisation.

Overall, the Neffos C5 is a decent debut effort by TP-LINK – an affordable, no-fuss 5″ Android smartphone. It will have a tough time though distinguishing itself from the plethora of similar affordable Android smartphones out there.
