TP-LINK may be the largest global manufacturer of WiFi networking products, but they aren’t resting on their laurels. Instead of fighting for an even bigger share of the same pie, they decided to branch out into the smartphone market with the Neffos C5 and Neffos C5L smartphones in March of 2016.
At that time, the Neffos C5 was considered to be quite a decent entry-level smartphone. Priced at just RM 539 / US$ 135, it offers quite a lot of features in a 5″ smartphone. Today, we are going to take a look at the TP-LINK Neffos C5 and see how it stacks up against the competition.
But first, let’s compare the specifications of the Neffos C5 against the lower-end Neffos C5L.
The TP-LINK Neffos C5 comes in a bright purple cardboard box typical of smartphones these days, with the key specifications listed at the bottom. Let’s take a look inside!
When you unpack everything, you will find the following items :
One TP-LINK Neffos C5 smartphone
One 2,200 mAh (@ 3.8 V) Neffos lithium-ion battery
One 5 W Neffos USB charger
One set of Quick Start Guide, Warranty Notice and Safety Notice booklets

Neffos C5 Key Features Primer
In this video, we will give you a quick tour of the TP-LINK Neffos C5’s key features.
Inside The Neffos C5
Now, let’s take a look INSIDE the Neffos C5. We will show you how to carefully remove the back cover to gain access to the two SIM slots and the microSD card slot. We will also show you how to install the user-removable lithium-ion battery.
[adrotate banner=”5″]
Setting Up The Neffos C5
When you power up the Neffos C5 for the first time, it will take about 52 seconds to boot up. If you set it up as a fresh device, it will take you no more than 5 minutes to complete the initial setup. Check it out!
If you like our work, you can help support our work by visiting our sponsors, participate in the Tech ARP Forums, or even donate to our fund. Any help you can render is greatly appreciated!
It’s Alive!
The Neffos C5 has a bright and sharp 5″ IPS display, with a resolution of 720 x 1280. The display is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass, which offers it significant scratch and shatter resistance. However, it lacks an oleophobic coating, which means it’s very easily smudged.
The Neffos C5 has a polycarbonate back with a smooth matte finish, that is resistant to smudges. As you can see, it fits well in our Asian-sized hand and is small enough for single-handed use. In case you are wondering, it is 7.2 cm wide,14.4 cm tall and 8.8 mm thick.
Available Memory & Storage
The Neffos C5 comes with 2 GB of memory, which is very decent at its price point. About half of that is available for your apps. Plenty enough for multiple apps running at the same time. Very nice.
The Neffos C5 also comes with 16 GB of internal flash memory. Once you deduct 9.65 GB for the Android 5.1 operating system and apps, you have 9.44 GB of free space left to use. That is pretty decent actually, allowing you to store about 2,400 photos, or record 74 minutes of 1080p video.
[adrotate banner=”5″]
Dual SIM & microSD Slots
The Neffos C5 has dual SIM, dual standby capability. It also has a microSD slot that supports microSD cards with capacities up to 32 GB. All three slots are located next to the removable 2,200 mAh battery. Yes, you will need to remove the battery before inserting a SIM card or a microSD card.
Cameras
The Neffos C5 has pretty decent cameras for its price point. Its front camera has a 5 MP sensor, while the rear camera has an 8 MP sensor with a dual-tone flash. The rear camera is capable of taking photos with a resolution of 3264 x 2448 and 1080p videos in the 3GP file format.
The camera software is quite limited in its capabilities. It offers a number of filters and 6 scene modes (including HDR). However, you are not given any option to change the camera settings.

Camera Performance
The Neffos C5’s main camera has pretty decent performance. It has good control of exposure and white balance. Even though there is a fair bit noise in areas that are poorly lit, they only appear on close examination.
[adrotate banner=”5″]
Video Recording Performance
The Neffos C5’s main camera records video only in full HD (1080p) mode. It does not support image stabilisation, as far as we can tell. We offer the following two video recording samples for your perusal.
The first sample is a video recording of an Arabic dance. Even though the Neffos C5 recorded it in 1080p resolution, it appears blur. It seems to have trouble focusing on the subject. The lack of any image stabilisation did not help either, because the C5 was held with one hand.
The second sample is a video recording of ice skaters. This time, we used two hands to stabilise it. The difference is very apparent. However, there still appears to be auto-focusing issues – you can see the camera “seek” many times.
Generally, the Neffos C5’s video recording capabilities were quite disappointing. Recording in full HD is pointless if the camera has trouble focusing. The end result is poor picture quality in high resolution.

Battery Recharging Performance
The Neffos C5 has a removable 2,200 mAh lithium-ion battery, but it does not have Fast Charging capability. In fact, it only comes with a 5 W travel charger. Even so, it was able to recharge its battery pretty quickly.
Our tests showed that the Neffos C5 can recharge its battery from 18% to 100% in just over 156 minutes (2 hours 36 minutes).

As a low-cost smartphone, it comes to no surprise that the Neffos C5 isn’t terribly good at gaming. Not only does it only have 4 CPU cores, it only comes with the ARM Mali-T720 MP2 GPU running at 450 MHz. It’s good enough for 2D games though.
[adrotate banner=”5″]
Our Verdict
The Neffos C5 is TP-LINK’s first attempt to penetrate the smartphone market with an affordable smartphone. Launched with a recommended retail price of just RM 539 / US$ 135, this is a smartphone that everyone can afford.
To keep costs low, TP-LINK opted for a quad-core MediaTek MT6735 SoC, a HD display and a relatively small battery. But they focused on what really counts – an IPS panel for the display, 2 GB of RAM and pretty decent cameras.
Even though the MediaTek MT6735 is rather dated, it held up well in our benchmarks. It’s really fast enough for basic smartphone tasks and 2D gaming. Even its small 2,200 mAh battery did better than expected, delivering almost 10 hours of non-stop usage!
Thanks to its IPS panel, it has a bright and sharp display with wide viewing angles. It is even protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. The only downside? It doesn’t have an oleophobic coating, so it smears at the touch of your fingertip!
Its main camera was a bit of a mixed bag. The main camera takes pretty decent pictures, with pretty good control of the exposure and white balance. However, the videos it records suffer from auto-focus issues and a lack of image stabilisation.
Overall, the Neffos C5 is a decent debut effort by TP-LINK – an affordable, no-fuss 5″ Android smartphone. It will have a tough time though distinguishing itself from the plethora of similar affordable Android smartphones out there.

The Doogee T6 is a 5.5″ smartphone with a super-long battery life, thanks to its 6,250 mAh battery! In many aspects, it is very similar to the Doogee Y200.
It has the same 5.5″ IPS display with a resolution of 720 x 1280, and comes with an 8 MP rear camera. The Doogee T6 is also powered by the same quad-core MediaTek MT6735 processor and runs on Android 5.1 with 2 GB of RAM.
Beyond that, the Doogee T6 trades the fingerprint sensor, the 5 MP front camera and half the storage capacity for a dual-tone flash to support its rear camera and a much larger 6,250 mAh battery. This allows it to take better flash photography and even serve as a power bank for other devices.
Again, Doogee quotes both cameras as having higher resolutions of 13 MP and 5 MP respectively. However, that is because they perform software extrapolation to achieve those resolutions (by default). Their true resolutions are 8 MP and 2 MP respectively.
The Doogee T6 smartphone is available in either White or Black colours, and is now available for sale on GEMFIVE with the retail price of RM 599 / ~US$ 149.
