Facebook, Instagram, Messenger + Workplace Down Again!

Facebook, Instagram, Messenger + Workplace Down Again!

Just days after going down for SIX HOURS, Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Workplace went down AGAIN!

Find out what happened!

Facebook, Instagram, Messenger + Workplace Down Again!

Just days after all of Facebook’s services went down for six hours, Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Workplace went down AGAIN!

At around 3:22 AM on 9 October 2021, they went down again… with people reporting that they were unable to log into their accounts, or send messages.

Fortunately, this time it didn’t take down WhatsApp and it took their engineering team just under 2 hours to get those Facebook services restored.

Why Did Facebook, Instagram, Messenger + Workplace Go Down Again!

Again, Facebook blamed another faulty “configuration change” for this downtime, but did not announce any details on what actually happened.

But coming right after an extraordinarily long downtime just days earlier and public testimony by Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, this new downtime may be shorter but is no less grievous.

It will feed growing opinion that Facebook has too much services under its control, and it’s dangerous and even folly to let a single company control so many social networks and communication services.

Regulators will no doubt be spurred by this new incident to look at breaking up Facebook.

EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager said that the major Facebook outage highlighted the danger of relying on just a few big players, underscoring “the need for more rivals”.

Even Russia jumped into the fray, stating that Russia was right to develop its own Internet platforms and social networks.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that the recent 6-hour outage of Facebook services “answers the question of whether we need our own social networks and Internet platforms“.

We will be looking forward to Facebook Engineering’s explanation of what happened, and whether it involved cutting through doors to get to their servers…

Why Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram Went Down!

Facebook and ALL of its messaging and social media platforms went down for about six hours, including Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram!

Find out why they all went down at the same time, and for so long!

Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram + More DOWN!

The entire slew of messaging and social media platforms owned by Facebook was inaccessible for about six hours, including :

  • Facebook
  • Facebook Messenger
  • WhatsApp
  • Instagram
  • Oculus
  • Workplace

The failure also extended to Facebook authentication, which you may be using to log into third-party apps and games, with Pokemon Go and Match Master gamers have reported problems logging in.

This left Twitter as the only major social media network still up and running, which is ironic since it became the only way for Facebook to reach out to the world…

This massive outage couldn’t come at a worse time for Facebook, whose stock slumped about 5.5% after former employee and whistleblower, Frances Haugen, leaked internal documents to the Wall Street Journal.

She also accused her former firm of repeatedly and knowingly allowing the proliferation of hate speech and misinformation for profit. Really tough times for Team Zuckerberg indeed…

Even Edward Snowden chimed in, saying that the world has become a healthier place for one shining day…

Why Did Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc. Go DOWN?

This massive, unprecedented GLOBAL outage appears to be caused by a DNS (Domain Name Server) failure.

The DNS service “translates” the plaintext link we use (www.facebook.com for example) into its actual numerical IP address (123.123.123.123 for example), allowing your app or browser to connect to the right server.

Without a working DNS service, no one is able to connect to any Facebook-owned service because the Internet no longer knows how to locate the right server.

CloudFlare senior vice-president Dane Knecht shared that the Facebook BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) routes have been “withdrawn from the Internet”, causing failure to connect through CloudFlare’s DNS service.

This was likely due to a configuration error on Facebook’s side, but coming one day after the story broke on Frances Haugen? It would be folly to rule out internal sabotage or a rush to remove some controversial features before she testified to the US Congress.

The conspiracy theory that it was a DDOS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) attack by Anonymous or some vigilante group is really farfetched. It would require an incredible amount of resources and coordination to not only bring down Facebook, but all the other services as well… at the same time!

Facebook’s Vice-President of Infrastructure, Santosh Janardhan, later confirmed that “configuration changes” on their “backbone routers” caused the 6-hour long failure.

Our engineering teams have learned that configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our data centers caused issues that interrupted this communication. This disruption to network traffic had a cascading effect on the way our data centers communicate, bringing our services to a halt.

He also asserted that it was a faulty configuration change, and no user data was compromised.

Our services are now back online and we’re actively working to fully return them to regular operations. We want to make clear at this time we believe the root cause of this outage was a faulty configuration change. We also have no evidence that user data was compromised as a result of this downtime.

While he blamed “the underlying cause” for impacting their ability. to “quickly diagnose and resolve the problem”, it is notable that it took Facebook engineering teams more than 6 hours to resolve a DNS failure.

It is now believed that the changes were made to Facebook’s Border Gateway Protocol, a mechanism that exchanges routing information to help figure out the fastest route for any request.

Apparently, the changes “withdrew” Facebook services from the DNS system, making it impossible for anyone to connect to them.

Even worse, Facebook ran their own systems through the same servers, so everything from engineering tool, messaging services and even security systems that controlled the key fob locks were no longer accessible.

So their engineering team had to rush to their data centres to manually reset the servers there.

Needless to say, this will be a big wake-up call for their engineering teams, and in the words of Russell Peters – “Somebody’s gonna get a hurt real bad!

It is also a big wake-up call for everyone using Facebook services. This massive outage is a reminder that we should NOT put all our eggs in one basket.

I believe it will at least temporarily spur the adoption of alternative messaging services like Telegram and Signal. Even Twitter should see a nice boost in Tweets and maybe new users.

Now, I’m not into conspiracy theories… but what are the odds of this failure happening just one day after Frances Haugen came out publicly against Facebook, and a day before she was set to testify before the US Congress?

Could these “configuration changes” be designed to remove some controversial features before Haugen’s testimony to the US Congress?

Could Facebook’s own engineering team have accidentally triggered the failure in their rush to remove those controversial features before she testified?

Mark Zuckerberg Fact Check : My Wife China And Not Pretty

Clickbait websites are sharing a post that Mark Zuckerberg wrote called My Wife China And Not Pretty.

Many praised it, calling him a true gentleman. Many shared it as an example of Mark Zuckerberg’s intelligence in choosing a wife with inner beauty.

Find out what Mark Zuckerberg wrote about his Chinese wife, and what the FACTS really are!

Mark Zuckerberg Allegedly Wrote This : My Wife China And Not Pretty

So many ask me, why do I choose Chinese wife who is not beautiful while I (according to them) is the one who has excessive wealth?

I should (according to them) I can get a wife who is “more” than my current wife, priscilla chan.

First of all to answer that question, I want to discuss what a beautiful woman is? and what is a woman not beautiful?

Honestly, I myself have many opportunities to meet beautiful women, many of them want to be my wife, but what is called “beautiful women” is mostly heart like glass, very fragile.

If you are sick as cranky like a king’s daughter, and arrogant, arrogant, and will always ask me why is it so rich but don’t want to change the car?

I know their goal of wanting to be my wife is to show off in the jet set environment, after which there will be more demands as a rich man’s wife.

A woman is as beautiful as however, if her heart can only demand, still looks ugly, her soul is also dirty.

Such a woman is just said to be an ugly woman, given free I don’t want to!

“Beauty outside will be reduced as age, but beauty from the inside will increase its value as age” that’s how Chinese proverb says, therefore I try to avoid to contact with things that quickly descends its value.

Then from them came another question, what do I like about priscilla chan, my wife?

“The expression of a woman’s face is a reflection of her heart” her smile always amazes me.

Since pregnant, Priscilla completely ignored the changes that happened to the expression of her face due to her pregnancy, kept dressed simple, without grooming, but precisely her happiness I felt fully and also seen to others.

I like the simplicity.

I like her look.

Priscilla is a passionate woman but wise, brave but loving, leader but can also support others.

I love everything while with her, I feel so comfortable & at ease.

I don’t feel like Priscilla is using me or boasting over me. In addition to having high intellectual intelligence, she also has high emotional intelligence, don’t forget that Priscilla is a graduate of Harvard University medicine.

You can try the university entrance test, majoring in law, medicine, economics is the majors that people grab, even though passing the entry test is not necessarily you can pass well.

So actually if you want to show off, it’s better for me to show off priscilla, not the other way around.

“Marriage is like a pair of shoes, only the wearer who knows the shoes are comfortable to wear or not” Priscilla is best suited for me, and I feel priscilla is the most ideal couple on the face of this earth.

I used to get acquainted with Priscilla in the queue in the toilet. In his eyes, I am just a nerd, nothing more. From that moment on I said in my heart “This is my soulmate”

In your eyes, Priscilla is a woman not beautiful, but in my eyes she is the beautiful woman and most compatible with me.

I couldn’t resist showing off my photos with Priscilla being so happy. In the photo looks like me and priscilla are so peaceful & natural.

“SIMPLE IS BEAUTIFUL”

Mark Zuckerberg (founder of FACEBOOK)

Our Verdict : Misogynistic BULLSHIT!

The My Wife China And Not Pretty essay was NOT written by Mark Zuckerberg, and is utter misogynistic bullshit. Here is a short summary of our debunking :

  • Mark Zuckerberg did not write that, and has never commented on his wife’s looks.
  • The writer has horrible grammar and spelling, and is probably a Chinese native.
  • Priscilla Chan graduated from medical school at USC, not Harvard.

It is also shocking to see so many people think that it’s admirable for any man to say that he loves his wife even though she’s Chinese and not pretty.

That’s really misogynistic, and even racist. Think about it.

Mark Zuckerberg Did NOT Write My Wife China And Not Pretty

For those who are now asking, “How do you know that? You were not in the room!“, here are the reasons why we know that for sure…

Fact #1 : Mark Zuckerberg Writes Well

You guys are aware that Mark Zuckerberg has a Facebook page, right? If you read ANY of his posts, you will realise that he can write with PROPER GRAMMAR.

The My Wife China and Not Pretty essay reads like some Chinese person wrote it in Mandarin, and had it translated into English by Google Translate.

How on Earth does anyone believe that Mark Zuckerberg would write an essay with such horrible grammar?

Take a look at this 2015 Facebook post, where he announced that Priscilla was pregnant. Look at how well he wrote it :

Fact #2 : Mark Zuckerberg Did Not Write It

The picture was misappropriated from his 2 January 2020 Facebook post, in which he wished everyone Happy New Year.

If you go through his posts, you will NOT find a single post about his wife being “China and not pretty”.

Fact #3 : Mark Zuckerberg Would Never Sign Off Like That

Never mind Mark Zuckerberg…. Who on Earth would sign off a Facebook post or article like this???

Mark Zuckerberg (founder of FACEBOOK)

His name is clearly visible at the top of his Facebook posts. And his name would be posted right under the title of every article he wrote that is published in the media.

And seriously – do you really think he needs to remind people that he founded Facebook?

Fact #4 : Mark Zuckerberg Has Never Commented On Priscilla’s Looks

As far as we can determine, Mark Zuckerberg has never commented on Priscilla’s looks. He has always complimented her in other ways :

Even in this Annie Leibovitz picture of both of them, he commented on her expression, not her looks.

Fact #5 : Priscilla Chan Graduated From USC’s Medical School

Priscilla Chan graduated from Harvard University, but she did not study medicine there. She graduated from Harvard with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology.

Did Mark Zuckerberg really forget that his wife graduated from University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine?

FB Messenger, Instagram + WhatsApp Integration Clarified!

Since the story broke about the Facebook Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp integration plan, the world exploded in a mixture of shock, apoplexy, and righteous indignation.

Take a DEEP BREATH and CALM DOWN. Let us tell you exactly what the FB Messenger + Instagram + WhatsApp integration plan is really about, and what it really means for Facebook and all of us…

The FB Messenger + Instagram + WhatsApp Integration Plan Clarified!

What Is Going On?

The New York Times broke the story on 25 January 2019, that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is working to integrate the messaging services that power Facebook Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp.

Essentially, he wants all three platforms to use the same messaging platform or protocol to communicate.

Are The Three Apps Being Merged?

NO.

Some reports (looking at your, Forbes and BBC!) have claimed that WhatsApp is merging with Facebook Messenger and Instagram, or that WhatsApp and Instagram will be integrated with Facebook Messenger. That is NOT TRUE.

Facebook is not going to combine all three apps into a single mega-app – the one app to rule them all. WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger will continue to be separate apps.

What Exactly Has Changed?

NOTHING at the moment. This FB Messenger + Instagram + WhatsApp integration project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2019, or early 2020.

Until the new unified messaging protocol is complete and implemented in all three apps, nothing will change. At the moment, all three apps continue to use their existing messaging protocols.

What We Know About The Messenger + Instagram + WhatsApp Integration Plan So Far

Let’s enumerate what we know about the FB Messenger + Instagram + WhatsApp integration plan :

  1. All three apps will still function independently
  2. All three apps will use the same messaging protocol
  3. The new unified messaging protocol will support end-to-end encryption

Why Does Facebook Want To Do This?

Migrating all three apps to a unified messaging protocol or platform has some real advantages for Facebook :

  • far less work is needed to maintain a single platform or set of protocols, than three different platforms or sets of protocols
  • it will extend the reach of their three apps, helping to “encourage” users of one app to use the other two apps.
  • it will make it easier for them to harvest more information, to create more accurate user profiles.
  • it should make it easier to introduce or extend new features into all three apps, e.g. time-limited Stories.

Is This Good Or Bad For Users?

There are some potential advantages for users…

  • users of any one of those three apps will be able to communicate with each other, without installing the other apps.
  • users of any one of those three apps will be able to share data (photos, videos, files, etc.) with each other, without installing the other apps.
  • it will introduce end-to-end encryption to Instagram, which does not yet support it.
  • potentially, it could mean end-to-end encryption will be enabled by default for Facebook Messenger (which currently only supports end-to-end encryption if you turn on Secret Conversations).
  • it could promote greater accountability and transparency, with a reduction in fake accounts and profiles.

On the other hand, the tighter integration has some serious potential ramifications…

  • it will be harder to obfuscate or separate your profile in one app, from your profiles in the other two apps.
  • any bug or vulnerability in the unified messaging protocol will affect all three apps.
  • any successful attack will cause far greater damage, with far more data lost or stolen.
  • it does not address serious privacy concerns – even if end-to-end encryption is enabled by default for all three apps in the new unified messaging protocol, the metadata isn’t.
  • it may make it more difficult for users to consider alternative apps or services.
  • abusing one app (intentional or otherwise) could get you banned or blocked on all three apps.

How Serious Are These Concerns?

The New York Times reported that Mark Zuckerberg’s “championing” of the FB Messenger + Instagram + WhatsApp integration plan led to “internal strife” over privacy concerns. How bad?

Apparently, it led to the founders of both Instagram (Kevin System and Mike Krieger) and WhatsApp (Jan Koum and Brian Acton) leaving Facebook. Dozens of WhatsApp employees also clashed with Mark Zuckerberg over this integration plan.

But Don’t Panic Just Yet…

There is no need to be one of those headless chickens running around, screaming that the world has ended or is about to end. The WhatsApp Messenger you have come to rely on has not changed, or will change for many more months to come.

The project is still in its infancy. Facebook is internally planning to complete the project by the end of 2019, and probably early 2020. There is still the better part of the year to consider alternative messaging apps out there.
