Google just cancelled their next Pixelbook, and dissolved the team behind it, but don’t worry – the Chromebook lives on!
Google Kills Pixelbook + Dissolves Team
Google just cancelled the next-generation Pixelbook laptop that was supposed to debut next year. They also dissolved the team developing it, and transferred its members to other teams.
This sudden decision came after Google said in May 2022 that it planned to continue its Pixelbook laptop business.
Then in July, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that he wanted to slow down hiring and cut some projects :
In some cases, that means consolidating where investments overlap and streamlining processes. In other cases, that means pausing development and re-deploying resources to higher priority areas.
It looks like Google decided that their next Pixelbook would be a waste of resources, and killed it to shift their resources elsewhere.
Google Pixelbook Is Dead, But Chromebook Lives On!
While there will no longer be a new Pixelbook laptop in 2023, that does not mean Google has given up on ChromeOS or Chromebook laptops.
In fact, Google likely canned their Pixelbook project because their OEM partners are doing a great job of producing a plethora of good or even great Chromebook laptops.
As Google hardware chief Rick Osterloh pointed out at Google I/O 2022 in May, the Chromebook market had matured and would last a long time.
Google have always developed hardware as a way to push the envelope, and to show its partners what can be achieved. It doesn’t benefit Google to directly compete with its partners.
Now that OEM partners like Acer, Lenovo and HP are offering Chromebook laptops in a wide range of price points and configurations, it just doesn’t make sense for Google to muddle the market with a new Pixelbook.

Microsoft and their hardware partners just announced the Secured-core PC initiative to combat threats that target the PC’s firmware and operating system.
With help from David Weston, Partner Director of Microsoft OS Security, here is everything you need to know about the Secured-core PC initiative!
What Is The Secured-core PC Initiative?
Secured-core PC is a new Microsoft initiative that they just announced. In partnership with their hardware partners, they aim to create a specific set of requirements for devices that are meant for secure use.
These requirements will apply the best practices in data security – isolation and minimal trust in the firmware layer and the device core that underpins the Windows operating system.
Secured-core PC devices will be targeted at industries like financial services, government and healthcare, and anyone who work with valuable IP, customer or personal data. They would also be useful for persons of interest, who would be high-value targets for hackers and nation-state attackers.
Is There A Need For Secured-core PC?
As more protection is built into the operating system and connected services, attackers are exploring other methods with firmware emerging as a top target.
The NIST’s National Vulnerability Database shows a near 5X increase in the number of firmware vulnerabilities in the last 3 years :
In late 2018, security researchers discovered that the hacking group Strontium targeted systems in the wild with malware that made use of firmware vulnerabilities.
Because it targeted firmware, the malicious code was hard to detect, and difficult to remove. It even persists after the operating system is reinstalled, or the storage drive replaced!
Why Is Firmware The New Target?
Firmware is used to initialise the hardware and software when a device is started up. It therefore has a higher level of access and privileges than the hypervisor and operating system kernel.
This means firmware attacks that succeed can undermine protective mechanisms like Secure Boot that the hypervisor or operating system use to protect against malware.
Firmware attacks can more easily evade endpoint protection and detection solutions, because the latter run under the operating system layer, and therefore have limited visibility of the firmware layer.
What Is A Secured-core PC Made Up Of?
Secured-core PCs will combine multiple layers of protection – identity, virtualisation, operating system, hardware and firmware – to prevent attacks, rather than simply detecting them.
They all ensure that the device will boot securely and is protected against firmware vulnerabilities, shielding the operating system from attacks and preventing unauthorised access to the device and data.
Microsoft is now implementing System Guard Secure Launch in Windows 10 as a key Secured-core PC requirement.
System Guard uses the Dynamic Root of Trust for Measurement (DRTM) capabilities built into the latest processors from AMD, Intel and Qualcomm, to protect the boot process from firmware attacks.
The firmware is used to start the hardware, and then shortly after, re-initialise the system into a trusted state. This helps to limit the trust assigned to the firmware, greatly mitigating against firmware attacks.
This method also helps protect the integrity of the Virtualisation-Based Security (VBS) feature in the hypervisor against firmware vulnerabilities. This is critical because VBS is used for important OS security functions like Windows Defender Credential Guard and Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity (HVCI).
Trusted Platform Module 2.0
Microsoft is also implementing Trusted Platform Module 2.0 (TPM) as a device requirement for Secured-core PCs.
It is used to measure the components that are used during the secure launch process, allowing for zero trust networks using System Guard runtime attestation.
Secured-core PC Availability
Secured-core PC devices are available from Dell, Dynabook, HP, Lenovo, Panasonic and Microsoft’s own Surface brand.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Up Close!
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) is powered by the 8th Generation Intel H series 6-core processor, with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics and fast NVMe SSD storage.
Lenovo offers two 15.6-inch display options :
a Full HD IPS display with 300 nits brightness and 72% Adobe RGB colour gamut, or
a 4K UHD HDR display with 400 nits brightness and 100% Adobe RGB colour gamut
The Full HD display option is slightly (0.3 mm) thinner and marginally (100 grams) lighter than the 4K UHD display option.
Despite sporting a large 15.6-inch display, it is only 18 mm thick, and weighs just 1.8 kg. It even has a long-lasting 80 Whr battery inside!
In addition to processor options, Lenovo also allows you to customise the following options :
DDR4-2666 Memory : 8 GB / 16 GB / 32 GB / 64GB
PCIe SSD Storage : 256 GB / 512 GB / 1 TB / 2 TB
Optional IR camera with Glance technology
Dual Fan, Dual Heatpipe Cooling
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) is designed to run in the most extreme conditions. Hence, it is kept cool by a dual-fan, dual-heatpipe cooling system that you can just see through the large vents on its underside.
The two heatpipes whisk heat away from the CPU and GPU to the two heatsinks – each kept cool by a fan that sucks in cool air from the underside. The hot air is then exhausted out the back. The inside of the chassis is also kept cool passively by large vents.
Webcam + Optional IR Camera
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) comes with a very basic 720p webcam. At this price point, we would have expected at least a 1080p webcam. But at least it comes with a ThinkShutter privacy cover.
Lenovo offers an optional IR camera, which we highly recommend because it allows for the more secure Windows Hello login method.
The IR camera also supports the Lenovo Glance technology, which merges face-, eye- and gaze-tracking. It allows the cursor to automatically focus on where you are looking at, or windows to shift with a move of your eyes. This is especially useful when you are working on multiple monitors.
Lay Flat Display
Whether you opt for the Full HD or 4K UHD panel, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) has a lay-flat display design. Its hinge is designed to let the display lay completely flat.
This makes it easier to work with other people, particularly since the display is touch-sensitive and supports writing with a pen. Lenovo offers an optional pen, but you can also use a third-party pen like the Genius Pen.
If you like our work, you can help support our work by visiting our sponsors, participating in the Tech ARP Forums, or even donating to our fund. Any help you can render is greatly appreciated!
Fingerprint Sensor
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) has an enterprise-grade fingerprint sensor. Instead of being integrated into the Power button, it is built into the chassis, to the right of the keyboard.
It uses a Match-on-Chip fingerprint sensor, which means the fingerprint data is registered, stored and verified by the fingerprint reader chip itself.

Keyboard + Touch Pad + TrackPoint
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) has a full-sized keyboard that is spill-resistant. That means it will withstand a small spill of water without shorting out.
In addition to its glass touchpad, the ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) comes with the iconic ted TrackPoint joystick. Also known as a pointing stick, the TrackPoint is pressure-activated, allowing for faster and better cursor control with minimal movement.
Connectivity Options
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) comes with a plethora of connectivity options and ports.
Wirelessly, it supports 802.11 AC 2×2 WiFi connectivity, which means it has dual transmit and receive antennas for better reception and range. It also supports the latest Bluetooth 5.0 technology.
Here is a list of ports you will find on the left and right side of the ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) :

PCMark 10 – Productivity App Performance
Surprisingly, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) only scored 4,332 in PCMark 10 on AC power.
Many other laptops powered by the Intel Core i7-8850H processor and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GPU would score just over 5,200 – about 20% higher.
When we switched to battery power, its performance was throttled by about 31% to improve battery life.
This makes it about ⅓ as fast as a gaming laptop based on the full-powered NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, which would score around 15,800.
If you run it on battery power, its performance gets throttled by about 21%, reducing its Fire Strike score to just under 5,000.

Our Verdict Of The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) looks and feels every bit like business laptop – from its angular design all the way to its matte black colour scheme. But it’s far more than just another mobile workstation.
Beneath its business-like veneer is a tough laptop that not only offers enterprise-grade Lenovo ThinkShield protection from factory till the end of its lifespan, but also military-grade toughness. In fact, every ThinkPad X1 Extreme has to pass 12 military-grade tests.
These aspects are important to note because the ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) is neither the most powerful mobile workstation in the market, nor does it offer the best performance for the money. In fact, our benchmarks show that it consistently underperforms laptops with the same processor and graphics card.
Performance, mark our words, is not what the ThinkPad X1 Extreme is offering. It is the entirety of the package that differentiates the X1 Extreme from its competitors – configurability, security and reliability in a thin and light package.
If you have the cash to spare, it offers an incredible 4K HDR display with 400 nits of brightness and 100% Adobe RGB colour gamut. You can also configure it with up to 64 GB of DDR4 memory, and up to two PCIe SSDs offering up to 2 TB of storage!
You can also count on its diverse connectivity options – super-fast Wireless-AC and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, with many ports to use – the latest Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C ports as well as the good-old 3.5 mm audio port!
It’s not just work, work, work though. The ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) supports Dolby Audio Premium and Dolby Atmos, so it doubles as a great entertainment and gaming laptop after a hard day’s work.
Ultimately, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (US | UK) is designed for those who need absolute security and reliability. Whether you are working in the comfort of your flying office, or in harsh field environments, you know you can depend on the X1 Extreme.

Lenovo ThinkShield Secures Devices through the Entire Lifecycle
From secure BIOS and firmware development to features like ThinkPad Privacy Guard security screens and the industry’s first laptop camera shutters, Lenovo builds protection into its products.
Security doesn’t stop at design: Lenovo has unique control over its global supply chain, setting strict security standards and policies for its manufacturing facilities.
Lenovo’s strategic partnership with Intel has enabled them to align with the Intel Transparent Supply Chain, which allows customers to locate the source of each component of their new system.
Lenovo oversees the security of suppliers who build intelligent components, making sure they conform to rigorous Trusted Supplier Program guidelines and best practices. For an extra layer of transparency, Lenovo Quality Engineers can audit suppliers at any time.
Lenovo ThinkShield Protects Users’ Identities and Credentials

An industry-leading level of integration with Intel Authenticate—up to 7 authentication factors—offers greater security and flexibility than vendors providing fewer authentication methods.
BIOS-based Smart USB protection allows IT professionals to configure USB ports to respond only to keyboards and pointing devices, keeping employees’ PCs safer.
Lenovo ThinkShield Protects Users Online
Lenovo WiFi Security, in partnership with Coronet, detects threats and notifies users when they are about to connect to unsafe wireless networks.
BUFFERZONE technology isolates online threats before they infect the whole organization.
Lenovo Endpoint Management, powered by MobileIron, provides a secure, simple way to unify cloud and endpoint security across multiple devices.
Lenovo ThinkShield Protects Users’ Data
Absolute Persistence technology provides IT admins with an unbreakable connection to all of their devices so they can leverage enriched asset intelligence, automate endpoint hygiene and stay audit-ready with continuous compliance.
Once devices reach the end of their lifecycle, Lenovo keeps potentially sensitive data secure by wiping the drives and securely recycling the parts.
Lenovo offers a paid Keep Your Drive service that ensures sensitive information never leaves customers’ hands.

The Lenovo ThinkPad P51s Tech Briefing
The new Lenovo ThinkPad P51s (lowest price on Amazon) is a 15.6″ mobile workstation that weighs about 2 kg. That incredible feat is due to its fiberglass-reinforced plastic construction, which is built to MIL-SPEC (military specifications) requirements.
This allows it to be used in extreme conditions, whether it’s exposure to sand, high temperature and humidity, or even high vibration and high altitudes. It is also shock-proof.
An interesting and useful feature is its Power Bridge Technology, which allows for hot-swappable rear batteries. This means you can swap batteries for virtually unlimited mobile computing on-the-go.
In this video, Lenovo ThinkStation Business Manager, Jason Wong, gives us an in-depth look at its key features.
Our Hands-On Preview
The Lenovo ThinkPad P51s (lowest price on Amazon) is powered by the latest Intel Core i7-7600U (Kaby Lake) dual-core processor, which runs at up to 3.9 GHz and has a 4 MB L2 cache. In addition, it boasts an NVIDIA Quadro M520 GPU with 384 CUDA cores.
Lenovo will offer three display options – a full HD IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and a maximum brightness of 250 nits (available in non-touch, and touchscreen versions), as well as the top-of-the-line 4K UHD IPS display, with a resolution of 3840 x 2160, and a maximum brightness of 300 nits.

The Motorola Moto G5 Plus is here! We had the opportunity earlier last week to have our first-ever hands-on preview of the Moto G5 Plus smartphone. We also managed to unearth some preliminary information on the Moto G5 Plus. Check out the preview and pre-launch details!
The Moto G5 Plus Preview
The Motorola Moto G5 Plus is a mid-range smartphone with a 5.2″ full HD display. It runs on the new Android 7.0 Nougat operating system, and is powered by the octa-core Snapdragon 625 SoC. Motorola offers variants with 3 GB or 4 GB of RAM and either 16 GB or 32 GB of storage. But we can confirm that only the top model with 4 GB RAM and 32 GB of storage will be sold in Malaysia.
Even though Motorola pegs the G5 Plus as a mid-range smartphone, it boasts a 12 MP main camera with a Dual Pixel sensor which allows for more accurate and very fast autofocus. This is usually a feature of flagship smartphone models. It is also supported by a dual LED flash, and is capable of recording 4K videos at 30 fps.
The Moto G5 Plus has a 3,000 mAh lithium-ion battery, which supports 15 W TurboPower charging. According to Moto, a 15 minute charge is enough to give you an additional 6 hours of power. In addition, the G5 Plus has a full metal chassis, and is protected in the front by Gorilla Glass 3. Motorola also gave it nano coating that repels water, but it is not water-resistant.

Lenovo and Google are coming together again. This time, they’re collaborating on a new immersive virtual reality product that’s designed for everyday consumers – the Google Daydream VR headset. Check out what Lenovo has to say about this collaboration!
The Google Daydream VR Headset
We’ll be giving an early preview of our upcoming Daydream standalone headset. It will be one of the first devices to feature WorldSense to allow you to move around and explore virtual environments as if you’re truly there: ducking, weaving and jumping for even more immersive experiences.
This product represents our latest effort in collaboration between our companies: You may remember the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro, the world’s first Tango-enabled smartphone, launched in 2016. While the Phab 2 Pro makes a number of smartphone AR experiences possible, this standalone headset is built specifically for immersive VR.
What’s a Standalone VR headset?
Other similar VR devices require a complex setup that relies on external sensors (standalone headsets have built-in sensors). This standalone headset will streamline the experience: just pick up and play.
[adrotate banner=”4″]
And this is different from Google Daydream smartphone-based VR, since WorldSense brings natural movements into your 3D environment. Duck in a game of dodgeball or lunge sideways to evade enemies as they close in on your position.
Casual consumers will soon be able to access immersive virtual reality experiences. Developers will now be able to unlock features that most consumers have never experienced before.
We’re excited that easy-to-use, fully immersive virtual reality is coming to you very soon. We hope you are too.
