HUAWEI Mate Xs Foldable Smartphone : Hands-On Preview!

We recently had access (for a limited time) with a few HUAWEI Mate Xs foldable smartphones, and here is our hands-on preview!

We will also share with you EVERYTHING you need to know about the HUAWEI Mate Xs, including its specifications and price!

HUAWEI Mate Xs : Hands-On Experience!

Let’s start with our hands-on experience with the new HUAWEI Mate Xs foldable smartphone. Be sure to check out how the Falcon Wing mechanism works, and look at how flat the display looks after it’s fully unfolded!

The only buttons you will find on the Mate Xs are located along the right edge – the Power button which doubles as the fingerprint sensor, and the Volume control buttons.

The HUAWEI Mate Xs comes with a dual-slot hybrid card tray at the top. It supports two nano SIM cards, or a single nano SIM card and an NM card (for additional storage of up to 256 GB).

Even though it comes with a substantial camera bar on the right side, there is no 3.5 mm audio jack. Only a USB Type C, which supports USB 3.1 Gen1 – basically USB 3.0.

There is no “front camera”, because of its foldable design – you can just flip it over and use the back display and the “rear cameras” for selfies. This gives you great flexibility because the Leica quad camera system offers :

  • a 40 MP main camera, with f/1.8 aperture
  • a 16 MP ultra-wide camera, with f/2.2 aperture
  • an 8 MP telephoto camera, with f/2.4 aperture, and
  • a Time of Flight camera, with f/2.2 aperture

But its main killer feature is the ability to unfold the display to create a large, tablet-like 8-inch OLED display!

When folded, the front display is 6.6-inch in size, while the rear display is 6.38-inch in size.

HUAWEI Mate Xs : Improved HUAWEI Mate X!

The HUAWEI Mate Xs is basically an improved version of their first foldable smartphone, the HUAWEI Mate X.

It features the same design, with an external 8-inch foldable display, and a Leica quad-camera system. But there have been some changes internally.

New 5G Mobile Platform

Instead of pairing the Kirin 980 mobile SoC with the Balong 5000 5G chip, the HUAWEI Mate Xs uses the new Kirin 990 5G mobile SoC, with a triple-tier architecture :

  • two ARM Cortex-A76 high-performance cores at 2.86 GHz
  • two ARM Cortex-A76 sustained performance cores at 2.36 GHz
  • four ARM Cortex-A55 low-power cores at 1.95 GHz

It also comes with a powerful 16-core ARM Mali-G76 GPU, and a new Da Vinci neural architecture with 2 big NPUs and 1 small NPU.

Improved Cooling

Keeping the Kirin 990 5G cool is a new flexible bionic graphite cooling system that folds with the display, and dissipates heat through both sections.

Improved Falcon Wing Mechanism

While it uses the same foldable design and foldable OLED display, the Falcon Wing mechanism has been improved somewhat.

Leica Quad Camera System

The Leica quad camera system which works as both front and rear cameras offer great flexibility due to its mix of cameras :

  • a 40 MP main camera, with f/1.8 aperture
  • a 16 MP ultra-wide camera, with f/2.2 aperture
  • an 8 MP telephoto camera, with f/2.4 aperture, and
  • a Time of Flight camera, with f/2.2 aperture

HUAWEI Mate Xs vs Mate X : What’s Different?

The HUAWEI Mate Xs foldable smartphone has been announced, and will soon be here!

But what’s the difference between the HUAWEI Mate Xs, and the HUAWEI Mate X? Let’s find out!

HUAWEI Mate Xs vs Mate X : What’s Different?

Let’s start with our hands-on experience with the new HUAWEI Mate Xs foldable smartphone. You won’t be able to tell the HUAWEI Mate Xs from the HUAWEI Mate X by touching and feeling them – they both look and feel identical.

The HUAWEI Mate Xs is basically an improved version of their first foldable smartphone, the HUAWEI Mate X.

It features the same design, with an external 8-inch foldable display, and a Leica quad-camera system. But there have been some changes internally.

New 5G Mobile Platform

The HUAWEI Mate X pairs the Kirin 980 mobile SoC with the Balong 5000 5G chip. While that offers 5G connectivity and a good mobile platform, the separate chips mean higher power consumption and thermal output.

The HUAWEI Mate Xs, on the other hand, uses the new Kirin 990 5G mobile SoC, which has a multi-mode 5G modem built in.

The HUAWEI Mate X does not appear to feature this cooling design.

Improved Falcon Wing Mechanism

While it uses the same foldable design and foldable OLED display, the Falcon Wing mechanism has been improved somewhat in the HUAWEI Mate Xs.

So that’s really all that have changed from the HUAWEI Mate X to the new HUAWEI Mate Xs.

HUAWEI Mate Xs vs Mate X : Specifications

HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro Photo Showcase : Macau!

As soon as we got our hands on the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro, we took it to Macau to grab some photo samples!

Check out the unedited photo samples we took, and see for yourselves why people are saying it has the best cameras they ever used!

HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro : A Quick Primer

The HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro (MY | SG | US) is the pinnacle of Chinese smartphone technology, boasting their latest Kirin 990 processor and arguably, the world’s most advanced quad-camera system from Leica!

Despite shipping without GMS, HUAWEI sold over 1 million units of the HUAWEI Mate30 Series smartphones in China… in just 3 hours!

A big reason why so many people loved the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro (MY | SG | US) is its Leica SuperSensing Quad Camera System that consists of :

  • 40 MP Cine Camera (f/1.6 aperture)
  • 40 MP SuperSensing Wide-Angle Camera (f/1.8 aperture)
  • 8 MP Telephoto Camera with 3X optical zoom (f/2.4 aperture)
  • 3D Depth Sensing Camera

The HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro is particularly popular because of its 40 MP SuperSensing Cine Camera, which supports 4K 60fps video recording, with these groundbreaking features :

  • an ISO of up to 51200,
  • Cinematic Time-lapse capability,
  • real-time video bokeh effect, and
  • an ultra-slow motion mode that records at up to 7680 fps!

For those who want to buy the HUAWEI Mate30 Pro directly, here are some online purchase links :

Historic Old Macau!

This time, we focused on the streets of peninsular Macau. This is the old, heavily-populated part of Macau where most of the Portuguese-influenced sights like Senado Square is located.

As this part of Macau is heavily-urbanised with many old buildings, it has great character wherever you go – offering great opportunities for street photography.

As usual, we took these photo samples using the Auto mode with no manual adjustments – because this is precisely how the vast majority of smartphone users take their photos!

We want our photo samples to reflect EXACTLY what any HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro (MY | SG | US) user can achieve, if he/she took the same photos in the same spot, at the same time, as we did.

HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro Photo Showcase : Macau!

We started the day with noodles and congee at Rua dos Mercadores. Note how congested the city looks – the buildings here are at least seven stories tall.

We resized this photo to ensure it loads quickly, but the detail in the original photo is amazing – you can zoom Into the balcony of the residential units and check out what plants they have in their mini-garden, or what clothes they hung out to dry!

This view of Rua Central emphasises the congestion in this part of Macau that cramps about 600,000 residents in just 8.5 square kilometres.

This photo shows pretty good control of the highlights and shadows. The sun was really bright, beating down mercilessly on the residences on the left, while the rest were in shadows.

The highlights were slightly overblown, but it did a good job of preserving details in the shadows. You can clearly read the small signboards further down the road.

Just off Rua Central is this unique green-coloured Theatro Dom Pedro V. (伯多祿五世劇院) | Dom Pedro V Theatre.

Built to commemorate King Pedro V of Portugal, this neo-classical building now hosts orchestral performances, opera and musical festivals.

Again, the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro (MY | SG | US) opts to let the highlights blow out a little, in exchange for preserving details in the shadows. You can clearly make out the man standing next to the pillar, as well as details of the theatre’s ornate windows and doors.

On arrival at the A-Ma Temple, we find it bustling with lion and dragon dance troupes preparing for the Macau International Parade!

It was a really bright day – you can see some glare from the bright sun in the upper right quadrant. Yet, you can zoom in and clearly see the faces of each person in this picture, even though they are in the shadows.

We stepped inside the A-Ma Temple for a short respite from the crowds outside. Built in 1488 to worship the Chinese sea goddess Mazu, it is the oldest temple in Macau!

This is yet another high-contrast shot. The HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro (MY | SG | US) did a decent job on the harshly-lit leaves, and kept the skies blue instead of completely white.

But more importantly – you can clearly see the craggy texture of the boulder, as well as the stone stairs, even though they are in the shadows.

HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro Photo Showcase : The Monte Fort!

Next, we headed off for the Monte Fort – the tallest point in Macau, and its historic military centre.

Instead of doubling back along the same route, we went down Rua da Barra for more scenic opportunities.

The 40 MP wide-angle camera is particularly useful in such shots, although it’s not quite as wide as the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ (USUK | AU | SGMY).

The good news though is that your subjects in these wide-angle photos will not look distorted.

Even side roads offer great photographic opportunities, thanks to its combination of unique architecture, weathered look and old world cobble-stone pavements.

This high-contrast shot shows how well the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro (MY | SG | US) controls both the brightly-lit leaves and cobblestones, yet ensuring we can clearly see the vines and moss on the old walls and the design of the louvred windows and doors.

The new world (tour vans) trying to navigate the narrow streets of old, historic Macau…

Yet another very high-contrast shot. While the harshly-lit buildings in the background lost some details, it still preserved enough that we can make out the building facade as well as the vans.

Yet you can clearly make out the crawling vines, and weathered walls of the green building on the left, as well as its window and door.

On the way, we spotted this unique structure – a doorway into the Patio do Cotovelo “inner” street with businesses lining both sides.

The detail is AMAZING! More so when you blow it up to 100% of its 40 MP resolution. You can see the brickwork in great detail, and zoom right to the shop at the end of the lane!

So here we are, at the Monte Fort (Fortaleza do Monte or 大炮台). Built between 1617 and 1626 on top of Mount Hill, it is the historic military centre of Macau.

In this almost uniformly-bright photo, the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro (MY | SG | US) demonstrates its ability to capture incredible detail. Blowing up the picture allows us to see the individual leaves of the tree, as well as the details of the stone walls.

The fort covers an area of 8,000 square meters, with 32 of these muzzle-loading (state-of-the-art in those days!) cannons to protect Macau against pirates and eventually, the Dutch!

Again, this was an incredibly bright day, creating harsh shadows. Yet, you can’t tell that from this photo – the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro (MY | SG | US) was able to control the highlights so that cannon, which is in direct sunlight, isn’t blown-out.

And yet, you can also see the colour of the flowers next to it, in the shadows. Also notable is the fact we can make out details of the distant building in the far background.

These days, it has become the favourite past-time of every tourist to use one of these cannons to “shoot” at the Grand Lisboa! LOL!

On this incredibly bright day, it’s noteworthy that we can zoom in and see details of the Grand Lisboa’s facade, which would be washed out in other cameras… and yes, you can make out the clouds in the bright blue sky!

This view offers the best perspective of Macau – the new and the old. The modern (and frankly, really odd-looking) Grand Lisboa in the distance, and the crumbling ruins of the old Monte Fort.

Again, the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro (MY | SG | US) impressed us with its ability to preserve details in very bright conditions, even though the Grand Lisboa is miles away!

On the way back from the Monte Fort, we stumbled upon this unique home that is built over a street. I don’t even know what such a feature is called… a bridge house???

In any case, this is a great photo to zoom in, and be amazed at the amount of detail captured in a single photo.

You can examine in detail, the intricate brickwork of the overhead house. You can even zoom past the tunnel, into the shops in the distance!

As you can tell – Macau offers a lot of unique photographic opportunities, even in places you would least expect them – off the beaten path!

And the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro (MY | SG | US) has the cameras that will let you capture incredible detail in every photo. Best of all – its Auto mode works incredibly well, letting you take awesome photos without any special skill or setup!

The HUAWEI P30 Leica camera uses a new periscope telephoto lens design to deliver more optical zoom with optical image stabilisation.

  • HUAWEI P30 : 3X optical zoom5X hybrid zoom, 30X maximum zoom.
  • HUAWEI P30 Pro : 5X optical zoom, 10X hybrid zoom, 50X maximum zoom.

How useful is SuperZoom? Take a look at this 10X hybrid zoom sample of the Milan Cathedral.

Even though it was taken at night, you can clearly see not only the words, Mariae Nascenti; but also the intricate details of the stained glass and wall carvings.

SuperZoom also allows for easier wildlife photography. This shot, for example, was taken from a distance of 10 meters.

Both SuperZoom and the ultra-high resolution of the 40 MP main camera allows for great sports photography. You can capture the action from a distance, and “zoom in” even after taking the photo!

TOF Camera

The HUAWEI P30 Pro comes with a ToF (Time-of-Flight) camera which creates a 3D map of objects and their distances.

This allows the P30 Pro to accurately separate the subject from the background, for accurate retouching and background blurring. This sample demonstrates how the background is blurred with a natural bokeh effect without affecting the mother and her son.

AI HDR+ Technology

One of the most challenging photos to take is of a subject with a bright background. Even worse if the sun is in the back!

To address this, both HUAWEI P30 and P30 Pro use AI HDR+ to let the front or rear cameras take multiple photos in quick succession. They are then combined to eliminate overexposed and backlit images, bringing out the subject, without overblowing the bright background.

Ultra-Wide Angle + Macro

The .HUAWEI P30 and P30 Pro come with an ultra-wide camera that allows for both a wider perspective, and a Super Macro mode.

You Don’t Need The P30 Leica Camera To Join The NEXT Image Awards!

The capabilities of the new HUAWEI P30 Leica camera will make it easy for anyone to take great photos. In fact, you can show off your new photographic abilities at the NEXT Image Awards, and win the US$ 20,000 cash prize, and other great prizes!

HUAWEI P30 Pro SuperZoom Samples From Blue Concert!

The HUAWEI P30 Pro boasts an amazing 5X optical zoom, with up to 50X digital zoom. How good is it? Check out these P30 Pro SuperZoom shots from the recent Blue concert!

Find out why the P30 Pro SuperZoom capability is a killer feature!

Concert Photography Made Possible?

Everyone LOVES a good concert, and what better way to memorialise it than to take photos of your favourite singers belting it out LIVE?

The only problem? It’s quite impossible to take decent shots using any smartphone if you are seated at a distance from the stage. More so when the light show at concerts can wreak havoc with the colour, contrast and brightness of the photos!

All changes with the new HUAWEI P30 Pro smartphone!

HUAWEI P30 Pro SuperZoom Samples From Blue Concert!

At the recent concert by British boyband Blue, a certain member of Team HUAWEI took a dozen shots using the new HUAWEI P30 Pro smartphone… from the back of the hall!

This is, as far as we know, the first trial of the HUAWEI P30 Pro camera in a concert setting. The photos were then cropped to compare the quality at three zoom ranges – Normal Shot, Close Shot, and Super Close Shot.

Although HUAWEI did not reveal the actual zoom ratio, we reckon Close Shot is using their 10X Hybrid Zoom, while Super Close Shot is using their 50X digital zoom.

Those HUAWEI P30 Pro camera samples are incredibly good. You can clearly see the Blue band members in the close shots.

Its super zoom capability not only allows you to take close-up shots of the band from across the hall, it lets you zoom past the crowd. No more ‘head shots”. No need to pay for expensive front row seats!

HUAWEI P30 Pro SuperZoom Camera Details

The HUAWEI P30 Pro features a new Leica quad-camera system, made up of :

  • a 40 MP main camera with a super-bright f/1.6 aperture,
  • 20 MP ultra-wide angle camera with f/2.2 aperture,
  • an 8 MP SuperZoom telephoto camera with f/2.4 aperture, and
  • a Time-of-Flight (ToF) camera.

The P30 Pro SuperZoom telephoto camera supports 5X optical zoom, 10X hybrid zoom and 50X digital zoom.

Richard Yu, CEO of HUAWEI Technologies Consumer Business Group, leaked the P30 Pro’s SuperZoom capability when he earlier released an image of the superman on his Weibo account.

The watermark suggests that this moon shot was taken with the HUAWEI P30 Pro, using its quad-lens Leica camera.

You may recall that last year’s HUAWEI P20 Pro introduced the world’s first triple-lens camera, with 3X zoom. The same ground-breaking Leica camera was also used in the HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro, allowing both smartphones to achieve a class-topping DxOMark score of 109 points!

Unboxing The Huawei Mate 9

As a premium smartphone, the Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) comes in a premium black box. Let’s take a look at what’s inside!

[adrotate banner=”4″]

Inside the box, you will find the following items :

  • One Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) smartphone
  • One Huawei Mate 9 protective case
  • One Huawei Mate 9 quick start guide
  • One 22.5 W Huawei SuperCharge power adaptor
  • One USB Type C cable
  • One micro USB to USB Type C adaptor
  • One pair of Huawei earphones
  • One SIM card tray ejector pin

The inclusion of the Huawei Mate 9 protective case in the package is most welcomed, even though it only protects the back and the four corners of the Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada). At least it offers some protection out of the box, until you get a better case.

The Huawei Mate 9 Smartphone

The Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) is a 6″ phablet (officially 5.98″) with an IPS-NEO display. There was some confusion about its display and protection. Let us be clear – the Huawei Mate 9 Porsche (Amazon) has an AMOLED display, while the “regular” Huawei Mate 9 uses an IPS-NEO display. They are both protected by Gorilla Glass 3, not Gorilla Glass 5.

The Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) runs on the octa-core Kirin 960, with 4 GB of LPDDR4 SDRAM and 64 GB of internal flash storage. It is powered by a large 4,000 mAh lithium-ion polymer battery. All that is packed into a metal unibody chassis less than 8 mm thick.

The Huawei Mate 9 has a two-slot SIM tray on the left side. Depending on region, this may support a single nano SIM and a microSD card, or a hybrid SIM tray in which a second nano SIM can be used in lieu of the microSD card.

Like many premium smartphones, the Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) uses the new bidirectional Type C USB port. To support users with existing micro USB cables and OTG drives, Huawei threw in a micro USB to USB Type C adaptor.

Somehow, Huawei managed to squeeze in the 3.5 mm audio port at the top. This will please people who enjoy using their smartphones as music players, but may prevent the use of external microphones.

Hybrid SIM & Fingerprint Sensor

The MHA-L29 version of the Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) has Dual SIM, Dual Standby capability. However, only the SIM1 supports 4G calls and data, while SIM2 can only support 3G calls. The SIM card tray is located along the left edge, and supports two nano SIM cards.

The second SIM card tray is a hybrid SIM tray, which allows you to install a microSD card instead. In other words, it supports either a second nano SIM card, or a microSD card, but not both at the same time. In the MHA-L09 version, the tray only supports one nano SIM card with the second slot dedicated to the microSD card.

The Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) uses a fingerprint sensor that is located at the back, just under the main camera. This is an all-aspect fingerprint sensor that unlocks the smartphone with just a touch. Huawei promises that it is 20% faster than the Huawei Mate 8’s fingerprint sensor.

[adrotate banner=”5″]

The Huawei Mate 9 Cameras

The Huawei Mate 9’s killer feature is its second-generation Leica-branded dual-lens camera. The camera uses a 12 MP RGB sensor to capture colour, and a 20 MP monochrome sensor to pick up the finer details. Their output are then combined to produce the final image.

The dual-lens camera features f/2.2 Leica Summarit-H lenses with optical image stabilisation. The camera’s ability to reduce handshake in low light condition is further enhanced by the pixel binning ability of the dual lenses.

Its front camera though is more run-of-the-mill. It has an 8 MP front camera with autofocus capability. The wider than average f/1.9 aperture though allows for better low light selfies. That is important because the Huawei Mate 9 does not come with a front LED flash, or even support screen flash.

Setting Up The Huawei Mate 9

The Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) runs on Android 7.0 Nougat, and is very easy to set-up. If you are setting it up as a new device, it should take you only 5 minutes to finish the setup process.

The Ergonomics

The Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) is a large 6″ phablet that is almost 8 cm wide, so it is definitely a two-handed device. While it does not boast a QHD AMOLED display of the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge and the Huawei Mate 9 Porsche (Amazon),  its Full HD IPS-NEO display still looks great. No complaints here.

The anodised aluminium chassis is smooth to the touch, with a nice satin finish that imparts a nice shine and yet is resistant to fingerprint smears. If you feel that it lacks grip, slap on the provided clear case – it will give you more grip while protecting the back against scratches.

[adrotate banner=”5″]

Available Memory & Storage

The Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) comes with 4 GB of LPDDR4 memory, of which 2.3 GB (57.5%) is available for use. That’s plenty of free memory to run multiple apps at the same time.

As befits a premium smartphone, the Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) has 64 GB of internal flash storage. Of that, 59.29 GB is available to use, which is just awesome. If that’s not enough, you can top it up with a microSD card (up to 256 GB).

Camera Performance – Photos

The Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) has an impressive dual-lens camera that Huawei co-designed with Leica. It boasts two separate RGB and monochrome sensors, both with Leica Summarit-H lenses. The full 20 MP resolution is attained with the 4:3 aspect ratio. Each picture has a resolution of 5120 x 3840 and a file size of between 4.5 to 6.5 MB.

Here are 8 high-resolution samples for you to check out. Click on them to load the full-sized photos, which you can also download to examine.

As these samples show, the amount of detail captured by the Leica dual-lens camera was quite astounding. Even the darker areas showed an amazing amount of detail. Even the night shot of Disneyland showed a surprising amount of detail, and very low noise. Simply amazing.

If there is a word of caution though, we have to point out that the Leica Summarit-H lens has an aperture of f/2.2. This is not as fast as the lenses on other premium smartphones, so low light conditions may result in blurry photos. The optical image stabilisation helps some, but the pixel binning capability only works if you take photos at 12 MP or less.

[adrotate banner=”5″]

Camera Performance – Video Recording

The Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) is capable of recording 1080p and 4K videos. They are also encoded using the H.265 standard, which allows for much smaller file sizes. It also supports optical image stabilisation, although it does not seem to support electronic image stabilisation. To test out these capabilities, we took some sample videos.

Test #1 : Piano Recital

In this piano recital, the image resolution is so high you can see the sweat glisten off Mr. Yang I-Deun’s forehead. We also liked how clear the recorded sound was. The distinct lack of background noise was very impressive. The Huawei Mate 9’s control of the bright highlights was also pretty good.

Test #2 : Food Trucks

We did this short take of some food trucks to test out the image stabilisation capability. It did a pretty decent job of removing most of the shaking, but the jerking as I walked was rather pronounced. Some electronic image stabilisation capability would have been useful in reducing that.

Test #3 : Night Dancing

I think the first thing you will note is how clear the audio recording is. There is some colour noise from the low light areas like the floor, but the amount of detail you can pick out is still amazing. There is also very good control of the highlights in the background.

Work Performance – PCMark

We tested the Huawei Mate 9’s performance using PCMark, which simulates work applications like web browing, playing video, writing text and editing photos.

Huawei Mate 9 ASUS ZenFone 3 Ultra HTC 10 honor 8
Work Performance Score
(Average)

Writing 7883 7166 7463 6231
Photo Editing 9702 8262 9694 7352

The Kirin 960 is a surprisingly speedy processor. It beat the ZenFone 3 Ultra‘s Snapdragon 652, and even the Snapdragon 820 in the HTC 10!

Battery Life – PCMark

We then tested the Huawei Mate 9’s battery performance using PCMark. It basically ran the PCMark work tests until its battery capacity dropped to 20%.

Amazingly, the Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) lasted 13 hours! That’s 40% longer than the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, which has the same battery capacity; and a full 1.5 hours longer than the ASUS ZenFone 3 Ultra with a larger 4,600 mAh battery. This is truly fantastic performance!

Battery Recharging Performance

The Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) comes with a SuperCharge adaptor with a power output of 22.5 W. Take a look at how fast it recharged the large 4,000 mAh battery.

It took the Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) an astoundingly bad 401.5 minutes (6 hours 41.5 minutes) to recharge its battery from 19% to 100%. This is a battery life : recharging ratio of about 2 : 1 – a truly abysmal performance.

The SuperCharge capability does not seem to be working in our review sample, because the chart shows a linear increase in battery capacity over time. We would have expected a large boost in battery life that would taper off as the battery reached its maximum capacity.

Gaming Performance – 3DMark

We tested the Huawei Mate 9’s gaming performance using 3DMark, using the Ice Storm Unlimited test.

Graphics Test 2 131.1 fps 76.3 fps 106.4 fps 67.4 fps
Physics Test 48.1 fps 36.0 fps 47.4 fps 48.0 fps

The Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) did very well in this test, coming in 20% faster than the HTC 10, and 57% faster than the ASUS ZenFone 3 Ultra. It should have no problem handling any 3D game you throw at it.

Overall Performance

AnTuTu is a nice benchmark for testing various performance aspects of Android devices.

The Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) did well in this test, edging out the Snapdragon 820-powered HTC 10. It did particularly well in the CPU tests, and less so in the 3D tests. However, it was still overall a very powerful smartphone.

Our Verdict

The Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) was everything we expected of it, and then some. Its headline feature – the Leica-branded dual-lens camera – was more than just marketing fluff. It actually delivered really impressive photos and videos, even in poor light conditions. That’s quite impressive since it uses relatively slow f/2.2 lens.

[adrotate banner=”4″]

The Kirin 960 SoC that powered it did not disappoint either. It delivered great CPU and graphics performance in every test we put it through. It also comes with plenty of memory and storage space. You will never need to worry about the Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) not being able to handle any app or game.

The Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada) also had a very impressive 13 hours of battery life in our test. The only downside though was its abysmal battery recharging performance. You will need at least 6 hours to fully recharge its battery. That, fortunately, seems to be its only major flaw.

Overall, we are most impressed with the Huawei Mate 9 (Amazon | Lazada). In fact, we like it so much, we think it deserves no less than our Editor’s Choice Award. Congratulations, Huawei!

The Exclusive Huawei Mate 9 Preview + Launch Dates

On 3 November 2016, Huawei revealed not just the Huawei Mate 9, but also the bespoke Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design. Before their official launch, we were given exclusive access to the Huawei Mate 9, albeit only for a few short hours. We are now allowed to reveal to you the photos and details in our exclusive Huawei Mate 9 preview.

The Huawei Mate 9 Preview

The Huawei Mate 9 has a 5.9″ IPS display with a full HD resolution of 1080 x 1920. It is powered by the new Kirin 960 octa-core SoC, with 4 GB of LPDDR4 RAM. The Kirin 960 offers four 2.4 GHz Cortex-A73 cores and four 1.8 GHz Cortex-A53 cores, together with the powerful Mali-G71 MP8 GPU.

In the photography department, it boasts a second-generation dual-lens Leica-designed camera. This camera now pairs a 20 MP monochrome sensor with a 12 MP colour sensor. They both feature f/2.2 Leica lenses, and support optical image stabilisation (OIS).

How good is the new Leica-designed dual-lens camera? Take a look at this monochrome sample (full-size 20 MP @ 6 MB here). The new Huawei Mate 9 also comes with a 4,000 mAh lithium-polymer battery that supports Super Charge. Super Charge allows for very fast charging, thanks to its 22.5 W charger.

The Huawei Mate 9 will come with 64 GB of internal flash storage, and a microSD card slot that supports up to 256 GB of additional storage. It’s priced at €699 for Europe.

Sadly, that’s all we could take out of the exclusive Huawei Mate 9 preview session. We hope to get more hands-on time with the Mate 9 when it hits the stores (see the launch dates below).

Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design

For those who want something more exclusive, Huawei offers the bespoke Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design variant.

Available only in Black Graphite, the Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design features a 5.5″ curved AMOLED display with a higher resolution of 1440 x 2560. It also comes with a whopping 6 GB of LPDDR4 memory and 256 GB of internal flash storage. However, it does not come with a microSD slot.

The other features of the Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design remain the same with the “standard” Mate 9. It comes with the same processor and dual-lens Leica-designed camera. It will, however, retail for twice the “standard” Mate 9’s price at €1395 in Europe.

Some Sneak Peek Photos

Here are some photos we took of the Huawei P9 Plus smartphone. Unlike the Huawei P9, this model sports a front 8 MP camera with faster f/1.9 lens (instead of f/2.4). It shares the same Leica dual-lens camera as well as the fingerprint sensor at the back.

The only physical buttons are on the right side – a orange-rimmed Power button, and the Volume control. On the left side, you will find the SIM-microSD card slot. This unit is a hybrid dual SIM model which supports a second SIM card or a microSD card, but not both at the same time.

Fortunately, Huawei used the latest Type C USB 3.1 port. The Type C port is not only bidirectional, it also allows for much faster transfers.
