GeForce RTX 30 Gaming Laptops : Ampere Goes Mobile!

At CES 2021, NVIDIA announced the coming availability of Ampere-based GeForce RTX 30 series gaming laptops!

Starting 26 January 2021, NVIDIA partner brands like MSI will begin shipping RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 gaming laptops, followed by RTX 3060 gaming laptops from 2 February 2021 onwards.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 series mobile GPUs are built on the NVIDIA Ampere architecture, giving them 2nd Gen Ray Tracing cores and 3rd Gen Tensor Cores.

  • New Streaming Multiprocessors : Delivering 2X the FP32 performance of NVIDIA Turing, and 30 Shader-TFLOPS of processing power
  • 2nd Gen RT Cores : Delivering 2X the performance of NVIDIA Turing, plus concurrent ray tracing and compute, with 58 RT-TFLOPS of processing power.
  • 3rd Gen Tensor Cores : Up to 2X the performance of NVIDIA Turing, with 238 Tensor-TFLOPS of processing power.

  • NVIDIA RTX IO : Enables rapid GPU-based loading and game asset decompression, accelerating I/O performance by up to 100X. When used in conjunction with Microsoft DirectStorage API, it offloads the work to the RTX GPU, improving frame rates and enabling near-instantaneous game loading.
  • GDDR6X Memory : Delivers close to 1 TB/s of memory bandwidth, improving gaming performance.
  • Custom Samsung 8N Process Technology : Delivers higher transistor density and greater efficiency.
  • HDMI 2.1 : Delivers single-cable connection to 8K HDR TVs and monitors for ultra-high resolution gaming.
  • AV1 Decode : First discrete GPUs to support hardware decoding of the new AV1 codec, allowing for up to 8K HDR videos at 50% less bandwidth.

Earlier this year, Dell introduced their premier ultra-light laptop – the 2020 Dell XPS 13 (9300), featuring the first-ever, virtually-borderless InfinityEdge display!

It has now been refreshed as the XPS 13 (9310) with the latest Intel Tiger Lake processor!

Like the XPS 13 (9300), the Dell XPS 13 (9310) boasts an ultra-light chassis with machined aluminium, carbon fibre or woven glass fibre and Corning Gorilla Glass protection, as well as ultra-thin bezels.

The new 9310 refresh model, though, comes with the latest 11th Gen Intel Core processors with Intel Xe graphics, and options for more memory and storage.

NVIDIA Max-Q Technology : What Is It?

NVIDIA Max-Q Technology was first introduced at Computex 2017, and based on the NASA term, which refers to “the point at which aerodynamic stress on a vehicle in atmospheric flight is maximized“.

NVIDIA Max-Q uses a similar philosophy to design gaming laptops that are 3X thinner, with up to 3X more performance (compared to the previous-generation NVIDIA Maxwell GPUs).

So what exactly is the NVIDIA Max-Q design, and how does it work? Gaurav Agarwal, NVIDIA Product Marketing Manager, explains it all in this tech briefing.

 

2nd Gen NVIDIA Max-Q Technology : What’s New?

When NVIDIA announced 100 new laptop designs, including GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER and GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER gaming laptops, they also revealed details of the 2nd Gen Max-Q technology.

They basically added a bunch of new Max-Q technologies, which they promise will double efficiency over previous designs :

These are the new Max-Q technologies that will be included in all new 2020 GeForce RTX SUPER, GeForce RTX and GeForce GTX gaming laptops :

Dynamic Boost

Dynamic Boost Intelligently and automatically balances power between the GPU and CPU on a per-frame basis, boosting overall in-game performance.

Dynamic Boost is automatic, adaptive and always working to deliver more performance without increasing system power consumption.

Low-Voltage GDDR6

While not a technology unique to NVIDIA, NVIDIA say that they worked with their memory partners to increase memory efficiency, while delivering high performance with new lower voltage GDDR6 memory.

Advanced Optimus

Advanced Optimus controls which GPU is driving the display and intelligently determines the right GPU for the right workload at the right time, dynamically switching on the fly without needing a system reboot.

NVIDIA claims it will deliver long battery life and immersive, stutter-free gameplay with NVIDIA G-SYNC technology.

Next-Generation Regulator Efficiency

The 2nd Gen Max-Q designs will feature next-generation voltage regulators that will help optimise system design, so that the GPU will run more efficiently while delivering higher overall performance.

Deep Learning Super Sampling 2.0

Powered by the Tensor Cores in RTX GPUs, DLSS 2.0 is an improved deep learning neural network that boosts frame rates while generating beautiful, sharp images for games.

NVIDIA claims it will boost a game’s performance headroom while maximizing ray-tracing settings with increased output resolution and extending battery life by up to 20 percent.

 

2nd Gen NVIDIA Max-Q : Double Efficiency = Double Performance?

When NVIDIA says NVIDIA Max-Q will double efficiency, it is based on two caveats.

  • They are referring specifically to GRAPHICS performance.
  • On top of that, the additional efficiency is partly based on DLSS 2.0.

In the ideal scenario where you use a 2nd Gen Max-Q laptop with a game that supports DLSS 2.0, you should see almost a doubling of gaming performance.

Real world performance advantage from the 2nd Gen Max-Q technology will certainly be far, far less than that.

After all, how many games do you know support DLSS? And it will take time for DLSS 2.0 to be introduced.

That said, even a 25%-33% boost in efficiency would offer a nice upgrade over the last generation.

Dell just introduced the world’s first Chromebook Enterprise laptops, in partnership with Google… TWO of them, to be precise.

Let’s take a look at the Latitude 5400 Chromebook Enterprise, and the Latitude 5300 2-in-1 Chromebook Enterprise!

 

Dell Latitude Chromebook Enterprise

With more organisations moving to the cloud, they can now offer their employees more choices in the devices and operating systems they use.

The new Latitude Chromebook Enterprise devices offer powerful and configurable options that employees need, that large organisations can deploy and manage easily using Unified Workspace.

Like other Latitude laptops, they will feature enterprise-grade security, performance and connectivity features.

Both the Latitude 5400 Chromebook Enterprise and Latitude 5300 2-in-1 Chromebook Enterprise will feature narrow-bezel displays, and tough carbon fiber chassis that will have undergone 17 MIL-STD tests.

The 2018 HP Spectre x360 13 features a new design that includes a new Poseidon Blue colour and is HP’s first consumer notebook with privacy camera kill switch. It comes equipped with the world’s longest battery life in a quad-core convertible.

 

 

Bold Design And Great Audio

The redesigned 2018 HP Spectre x360 13  is available in the all-new Poseidon Blue with pale brass accents. It features a gem cut design achieved through aluminum CNC machining.

The USB-C port is angled on the right side of the device for better cable management while dual chamfer design makes the lid easier to lift from any side.

The unique design of the speaker pattern is also purposeful with each hole micro-drilled for better acoustic transparency to deliver great audio experience by Bang & Olufsen.

When AMD announced the Ryzen Mobile APUs, they also revealed the world’s first AMD Ryzen Mobile notebooks. In this article, we will share with you the specifications and key features of these notebooks. As these are preliminary details, we will update them as and when we receive new information.

 

The AMD Ryzen Mobile APU

The AMD Ryzen Mobile is not just a mobile processor, it is a mobile APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) – a combination of a traditional processor with a GPU, using a System-on-Chip design.

The new Ryzen Mobile APU combines the AMD Zen cores used in desktop Ryzen processors with AMD Vega cores used in the AMD Radeon RX Vega desktop graphics cards.

AMD announced two Ryzen Mobile models – the AMD Ryzen 7 2700U and the AMD Ryzen 5 2500U, with these specifications.

The First AMD Ryzen Mobile Notebooks

The first brands to adopt the AMD Ryzen Mobile APUs are HP, Lenovo and Acer. They are not introducing new designs though, but adapting their existing designs to fit the new Ryzen Mobile APUs. Let’s take a look at the first three Ryzen Mobile notebooks!

The HP Envy X360

The HP Envy X360 is a 15.6″ convertible laptop (we reviewed an Intel variant earlier). Earlier models are powered by either an Intel Core i7 / Core i5 processor, or an AMD FX-series processor. So it’s easy enough for HP to adapt it to the AMD Ryzen 5 2500U APU.

On top of a 1080p touch screen display, the HP Envy X360 will have dual-channel DDR4-2400 memory, and the option of either an SSD (up to 512 GB) or a 1 TB HD.

The Lenovo IdeaPad 720s

Lenovo will offer both Ryzen 7 2700U and Ryzen 5 2500U options in the Lenovo IdeaPad 720s. However, the Ryzen Mobile-powered Lenovo IdeaPad 720s will be a slightly smaller 13.3″ version of the current 14″ Intel-powered IdeaPad 720s.

The Ryzen Mobile-powered IdeaPad 720s will be 14% thinner and 26% lighter, while boasting a 1080p display. The downside – it only supports a single DDR4-2133 memory module.

The Acer Swift 3

Acer will also offer both Ryzen 7 2700U and Ryzen 5 2500U options in the upcoming Swift 3 with a 15″ full HD display.

While the display will be slightly smaller than the one in the existing Intel-powered Acer Swift 3 laptops, the Ryzen Mobile-powered model will be thinner and lighter.

Availability Of These Ryzen Mobile Notebooks

Neither AMD nor the three brand partners have announced the exact availability of these Ryzen Mobile laptops. AMD only announced that they will all be available in time for the holiday season. That means you should be able to purchase it in time for Christmas!

The Taiwan Excellence Pavilion has finally made its way to Malaysian shores with its first showcase at 1 Utama Shopping Centre!

From 12th to 16th July 2017, consumers will be able to explore and discover over 100 award-winning products at the LG Oval Concourse in 1 Utama Shopping Centre – Taiwanese innovations that have been awarded the prestigious Taiwan Excellence mark.

 

The Taiwan Excellence Pavilion 2017

The symbol of Taiwan Excellence is a mark of innovation – the highest accolade that can be awarded to Taiwanese products. Designed and built in Taiwan, these products comprise gaming laptops, smart devices, exercise equipment, and home appliances from some of the world’s renowned leading brands – all of which have been evaluated and selected based on their R&D, design, quality, and marketing.

Besides the exhibit of Taiwanese products, the five-day event also saw a host of product demonstrations by brand experts, as well as exciting cultural performances. Some of the highlights at the event included a 24 Seasons drum performance by the VR Drumming Academy and an appearance by Malaysian singer-songwriter Joyce Chu.

The Formosa Bear will also be there! Be sure to take a photo with him… Heck, you can even dance with him!

Participants also had the opportunity to trial and experience the variety of products on display through thrilling activities such as virtual reality sessions, golfing rounds, and much more. Over RM 10,000 worth of prizes provided by ASUS, Johnson Fitness, and Adata were also up for grabs through a lucky draw. Admission to the Taiwan Excellence Pavilion is free for all visitors.
