Claim : Mobile Phone Can Spark Stove Fire / Explosion!

People are sharing this video on WhatsApp and social media, warning that our mobile phone can spark a gas stove fire or explosion!

This video shows an Indian lady using her mobile phone in her kitchen. She places a pot on the stove, and proceeds to turn on the gas.

You can see the stove light up and suddenly, the Indian lady is on fire and does two pirouettes before falling to the ground.

I have no idea who actually created the video, but it has two Symcon Foundation logos, and the narrator mentions the Symcon Foundation in Mysore, India as well.

Truth : Mobile Phone Cannot Spark Stove Fire / Explosion!

This is yet another mobile phone causes gas stove fire / explosion hoax, and here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : It Won’t Happen Without A Gas Leak / Defective Gas Tank

A gas explosion cannot happen without a gas leak, or a defective gas tank.

Even if you are holding a sparkler or a candle with an open flame, turning on the gas stove won’t set you afire, because… LGP gas is heavier than air!

Liquified petroleum gas (LPG) is a mix of butane and propane gas. Butane is just over 2X heavier than air, while propane is a little over 1.5X heavier than air.

As long as the sparks or open flame is higher than the gas source, it won’t set the stove on fire if you just turn on the gas.

For there to be an explosion, there has to be a gas leak as significant amounts of gas has to leak before it becomes combustible.

Fact #2 : Our Mobile Phone Don’t Create Sparks

Even if there is a gas leak, using a mobile phone won’t spark a fire or explosion, as the mobile phone does not create sparks during use or when it rings.

The electrodynamic speakers in your phone vibrate to produce sound waves. They do not generate sparks.

Think about it – how popular would mobile phones be if their speakers emitted sparks into our ears?

Without a source of sparks or an open flame, it is not possible for your mobile phone to spark any fire or explosion.

Fact #3 : Authorities Confirm Mobile Phone Do Not Pose Fire Hazard

The US FCC, US NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) and the Petroleum Equipment Institute have all confirmed that mobile phones do not pose a fire hazard.

US FCC : In these stories, a fire was reportedly ignited or an explosion occurred when an individual’s phone rang and was answered. Supposedly, an electrical spark from the phone ignited the fires or caused the explosion. These reports are not supported by any documentation that the fire and/or explosion was caused by the wireless phone – or that the incidents even occurred.

US NFPA : The wireless industry has done studies on the potential for wireless phones to create sparks that could possibly ignite flammable materials. The studies generally conclude that while it may be theoretically possible for a spark from a cell phone battery to ignite gas vapor under very precise conditions, there is no documented incident where the use of a wireless phone was found to cause a fire or explosion…

Fact #4 : Static Is The Real Hidden Danger

Fire incidences blamed on mobile phones can often, if not always, be traced back to static electricity.

Our bodies can get “charged” with static electricity, if we wear rubber-soled shoes or slippers. Or when we walk on a rug. The risk increases when the air is cold and/or dry. The lower the humidity, the higher the voltage of a static discharge.

Sparks are created when an electrostatic discharge occurs – this is what causes the petrol station fires that people blame on mobile phones. Similarly, static electricity in your kitchen can create sparks that may ignite if there is a gas leak in the kitchen.

 

No Risk, But Bad Idea To Use Mobile Phone In Kitchen!

While your mobile phone will not spark fires, you should still avoid using it whenever you’re in your kitchen, or even at the petrol station.

Using your phone at the petrol station or kitchen is dangerous because it can distract you from dangers in an environment with flammable liquids.

It’s really the same reason why you are not allowed to use a mobile phone while driving. Your mobile phone may not cause your car to explode, but you could get distracted and cause an accident!

People are sharing this message on WhatsApp, which claims that Japan, South Korea and China are going to ban microwave ovens because they emit “unhealthy vibrations and radiation”!

End of Microwave industry!!!!! Japan govt has decided to high dispose of all the Microwave Ovens in the country before this year end.

Reason for this ban: University of Hiroshima’s scientists researched and found that “radio waves” from microwave ovens cause greater harm to health over the last 20 yrs, than the US atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Sep 1945.

Experts found that food heated in microwave ovens has very unhealthy vibrations and radiation.

All the factories of “microwave ovens” in Japan are being closed.

S Korea announced plans to close all “microwave ovens” factories by 2021, and China by 2023.

 

Truth : Japan, Korea + China Are Not Going To Ban Microwave Ovens!

This is yet another example of FAKE NEWS circulating on WhatsApp, and here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : This Hoax Started As Satire

This fake story started as a “satirical article” by the Russian “satire” website IA Panorama, with the title “Япония окончательно откажется от СВЧ-печей к 2020 году“, which translates as “Japan will finally abandon microwave ovens by 2020

Like other “satire” websites, IA Panorama creates outlandish stories that are designed to go viral. To avoid the “fake news” label, they put a disclaimer at the bottom of their article :

All texts on this website are grotesque parodies of reality, and are not real news.

Fact #2 : It Gets Recycled Every Year

This fake story gets recycled and shared on Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, etc. every year, with the date and some minor details changed.

The original Russian story only said that Japan was going to ban microwave ovens. In the 2022 edition, that was expanded to include South Korea and China.

Fact #3 : Microwave Ovens Are Not Getting Banned

To be clear – microwave ovens are not getting banned. Not in Japan, not in South Korea, not in China, or anywhere else in the world.

In fact, China and Japan are the second and third biggest markets for microwave ovens in 2022!

Fact #4 : Microwave Ovens Do Not Make Food Radioactive

Microwave ovens work by generating electromagnetic radiation in the microwave frequency range, that excites polar molecules in the food.

This dielectric heating produces thermal energy in a quick and efficient manner, albeit limited to the outer 25-33 mm of the food item.

It does not turn the food radioactive, because the microwave energy is converted into heat as it is absorbed by the food.

Fact #5 : Microwave Radiation Does Not Cause Cancer

The radiation produced by microwave ovens is non-ionising, like radio waves and visible light. The only non-ionising radiation that causes cancer is UV light.

It is unlike ionising radiation like x-rays, alpha and beta particles, and gamma rays, which are high-energy radiation that can change atoms by knocking off their electrons, thereby “ionising” them.

Even if you are exposed to microwave radiation, you won’t develop cancer. However, the microwave radiation will convert into heat when absorbed by your skin.

Fact #6 : Microwave Ovens Are Shielded

The microwave oven is designed to be a partial Faraday cage on five of its six sides, with a Faraday shield (the wire mesh) on its transparent window.

This keeps the microwave energy it produces within the oven, and protects the user from getting “cooked” as well.

If you have seen a Faraday cage demonstration at science shows (like this example below), it’s literally the same thing, just in reverse.

Fact #7 : Microwaved Food Is Safe

Food cooked or heated by microwave ovens are safe to eat. In fact, using the microwave to cook is a healthier alternative to frying or barbecuing foods.

That said, you need to use “microwave safe” wares. If you use plastic containers that are not microwave safe, they could not only melt, they can leach dangerous chemicals into the food.

So the danger lies not in the “nuking” of your food, but in the container you use to “nuke” your food.

Fact #8 : Microwave Ovens Are Efficient

Microwave ovens are very efficient at cooking foods, saving both electricity and time. The fast cooking time also has the advantage of preserving the food’s nutrients.

Microwaving foods do require some preparation though, as the microwaves can only penetrate the outer 25-33 mm of the food item, and will be reflected by aluminium foil, metal utensils or containers, etc.

People are sharing a video that shows a gas stove explosion that allegedly happened when a phone rang.

Find out if it’s true that a ringing phone caused that gas stove explosion, and if that’s even possible!

 

Did A Ringing Phone Cause This Gas Stove Explosion?

This is the video that many sites and people have been sharing, together with warnings to stop using a phone in the kitchen.

The video may be shocking, but don’t worry – both ladies appear to escape the explosion unscathed.

In the video, the lady on the left appeared to turn on the stove a split second before the explosion happened.

A close examination of the video will reveal that the explosion started under the stove, blowing out the oven door and sending the stove grates flying up.

The fire then spread to the tank and caused what appears to be a secondary explosion from the gas tank, which sends the stove flying forwards.

So in all likelihood, this explosion was caused by a leaking gas tank.

The short and sweet summary is that – no, a ringing phone did NOT cause that gas stove explosion.

 

Why A Ringing Phone Will NOT Cause A Gas Stove Explosion

For those who want to know more, here are the reasons why a ringing phone did not, and will not, cause that gas stove explosion.

Reason #1 : It Won’t Happen Without A Gas Leak / Defective Gas Tank

A gas explosion cannot happen without a gas leak, or a defective gas tank.

If there is a gas leak, the gas explosion will happen as soon as someone turned on the stove.

If the gas tank was defective, it would spontaneously rupture and probably explode.

So whether there is a phone in the kitchen is immaterial.

Reason #2 : Ringing Phones Don’t Create Sparks

Fact Check : Does The LPG Gas Tank Pressure Test Work?

Can we determine which brands are cheating their customers using the LPG gas tank pressure test?

A viral video shows how LPG gas tanks from various brands have different pressures, suggesting gas fraud.

Take a look at the video for yourself, and find out if that LPG gas tank pressure test actually works!

 

LPG Gas Tank Pressure Test Proves Fraud?

In the viral video, a man lined up gas tanks from six different brands – MyGaz, Mira Gas, Petron, Petronas, BHP and Solar Gas.

He then tears off their cap seals and checks their pressure with a pressure gauge, noting how different LPG gas tanks have different tank pressures.

Although he does not directly claim there was gas fraud, it’s implied in the video.

 

LPG Gas Tank Pressure Test Works But There’s No Fraud

While we do not believe the video is fraudulent, it is nevertheless MISLEADING.

The amount of LPG in each gas tank is determined by WEIGHT, not pressure. So the video itself, while interesting, is of no consequence.

The LPG gas tank pressure test may be accurate, but it’s NOT an indicator of how much gas is inside each tank.

And here are the reasons why…

Reason #1 : LPG Gas Is Sold By Weight, NOT Pressure

LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) all around the world is sold by weight, and not by pressure. That’s why the tanks are labelled and sold in different sizes based on WEIGHT :

Naturally, the weight listed above is the weight of the LPG , and not the tank itself which is considerably heavier.

For example, a 45 kg LPG gas tank weighs 78 kg fully loaded, while a 90 kg tank weighs 155 kg.

This infographic by The Hindu is useful in demonstrating how to determine how much LPG gas is in each tank.

Reason #2 : LPG Gas Pressure Varies A Lot

LPG gas pressure varies according to the gas mixture, temperature and even motion.

LPG is not one type of gas, but a mixture of mainly propane and butane. Here in Malaysia, it’s about 70% propane and 30% butane.

Propane vaporises much easier and at a lower temperature than butane, so the more propane in the LPG mix = the higher the pressure inside the tank.

A higher tank temperature (leaving it in the sun) or even shaking the tank will increase the pressure in the tank because more propane will vaporise.

Assuming they were not shaken or placed in the sun before the video was shot, the LPG gas tanks in the video have different pressures because they have different LPG gas mixes.

Reason #3 : LPG Gas Regulators Keep The Pressure Low

Irrespective of the pressure in the LPG gas tank, the gas regulator you hook up to it will maintain a constant, low pressure of just 2.75 kPA (0.4 psi or 0.0275 bar)

So it really doesn’t matter if the gas tank from your favourite LPG brand can deliver 100 psi or just a pitiful 55 psi. It’s going to get down-regulated to just 0.4 psi.

Reason #4 : High Pressure = Dangerous + Incomplete Combustion

The reason why gas regulators keep pressure so low is because stoves are designed to work properly and efficiently with such low pressures.

If you bypass the gas regulator, the 150X to 250X higher gas pressure will create extremely large flames that are dangerous, if not impossible, to cook with.

The high pressure will also prevent the gas from mixing properly with the air, resulting in the incomplete combustion of the gas, wasting your money.

20 Samsung Fridges Earn ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award

3 January 2017Samsung Electronics today announced that 20 models in its newest refrigeration line have earned the coveted ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA’s ENERGY STAR program is the trusted source for energy-efficient product labeling and consumer education. The Emerging Technology Award recognizes products that are at the forefront of energy conservation and climate protection.

ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award for 20 Samsung Refrigeration Models

All 20 Samsung refrigerator models, set to be released in 2017, are recognized for the innovative R-600a refrigerant system which meets the EPA’s demanding performance criteria to reduce energy use and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Samsung Electronics is the first manufacturer to receive EPA approval to market full-sized, residential Top Mount Freezer and French Door models using this new technology.

The EPA first awarded the ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award in 2011, and focuses on a different product category or eco-conscious theme each year. Samsung is a two-time winner – in addition to recognition for 2017 refrigerators, the brand received the award in 2013 for its eco-friendly DV457 clothes dryer.

The Road to Energy Savings

Samsung’s new R-600a refrigerant is naturally occurring and climate-friendly, with no ozone depletion potential and very low Global Warming Potential (GWP) rating. R-600a requires less work to be done by the unit’s compressor, which not only reduces energy usage by 6.5% but also makes the refrigerator quieter than previous models.

Samsung developed the technology ahead of planned changes to refrigerant qualifications that EPA looks to influence by 2021. Equipped with the advanced technology, the 2017 award-winning refrigerators met the EPA’s new qualifications of a GWP rating below 15 while producing an energy efficiency gain of 5 percent or higher. Additionally, the R-600a refrigerant has been approved for use in the US market by the EPA’s Significant New Alternative Policy (SNAP) Program.

The LG 600L Mega Capacity Side-by-Side Refrigerator Models

The LG 600L Mega Capacity Side-by-Side Refrigerators are available in 3 different models :

  • LG GC-B247SLUV, priced at RM 4,999 / ~US$ 1,109
  • LG GC-M247SLUV, priced at RM 5,999 / ~US$ 1,333
  • LG GC-C247UGUV, priced at RM 6,999 / ~US$ 1,555

The entry-level GC-B247SLUV has a gross capacity of 687 L, with a net capacity of 626 L. It has a Platinum Stainless Steel build and features a built-in deodoriser.

The mid-range GC-M247SLUV has a gross capacity of 687 L, with a net capacity of 626 L. Like the B247, it has a Platinum Stainless Steel build and features a built-in deodoriser. On top of that, it boasts a Door-in-Door.

The top-of-the-line GC-C247UGUV has a slightly smaller gross capacity of 675 L, with a net capacity of 618 L. It has a Aria White build and features a built-in deodoriser as well as a Home Bar.

Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator Revealed

Earlier this month, we attended the Samsung Forum 2016, where we saw the latest and greatest Samsung kitchen appliances – all slated for sale this year. Their proudest example of culinary technology this year is the Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator.

As the Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator is not slated for launch until Q2 2016 (Spring 2016 in the US), this is a sneak preview. Check out the video we took of a working example during the recent Samsung Forum 2016!

 

Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator Quick Look

The Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator is designed to be the centrepiece or hub of your kitchen. It is not just a refrigerator, it is part of the Internet. It is what we call an Internet of Things (IoT) device. All of its IoT (Internet of Things) capabilities are hidden behind the 21.5″ full HD LCD display on its upper right door.

The 21.5″ display is where the magic takes place. It allows you to manage your groceries, pin photos, leave notes as well as post, share and update your family’s activity calendar. This is where your family can coordinate your lives around.

[adrotate banner=”4″]It even comes with three built-in cameras that captures a picture every time you close the door. Using a smartphone, you can remotely access those pictures to determine what you currently have in the Family Hub Refrigerator. This is very useful if you’re at the store and can’t remember if you have enough eggs. Just launch the Samsung Smart Home app and have a look!

With the Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator, you don’t even have to leave home to shop for groceries. You can even place an order with an online grocery shopping partner and pay for it with a Samsung credit card partner using the built-in display. How’s that for convenience?

Of course, if you still prefer to shop at your grocery store, you can use the built-in shopping list feature to manage your groceries. Heck, you can even store your recipes right there!

 

Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator Availability

The Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator is slated to be available in the United States in the spring of 2016. Global availability will vary from country to country, but look out for it in Q2 2016 onwards. In the US, it will be available in two sizes – Counter Depth and Full Depth, with two colour options – Stainless and Black Stainless
