NVIDIA DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) Explained!

The Exclusive NVIDIA DLSS Tech Briefing + Demos

One of the new features that the NVIDIA Turing architecture introduces is NVIDIA DLSSDeep Learning Super-Sampling.

With help from Jeff Yen and John Gillooly, we will explain what DLSS does and why it will be a game-changer for the GeForce RTX family of graphics cards.

What Is NVIDIA DLSS?

DLSS is short for Deep Learning Super-Sampling. NVIDIA DLSS is a proprietary technology that uses deep learning to deliver better image quality at a lower cost than traditional AA techniques like TAA (Temporal Anti-Aliasing).

It is a new feature that leverages the Inference capability of the Tensor Cores of the new NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics cards.

Why NVIDIA DLSS Matters

First, let’s start with why NVIDIA DLSS matters. It basically allows GeForce RTX graphics cards to deliver better image quality that is better than, or equivalent to TAA (Temporal Anti-Aliasing) with 33% better frame rates.

NVIDIA shared these benchmark results to demonstrate how much of a performance boost you’ll get with DLSS.

Now, remember that NVIDIA is comparing DLSS to TAA. So you are NOT going to get a 33% boost in frame rate if you don’t use any form of anti-aliasing at all.

But if you enjoy gaming with anti-aliasing enabled for better image quality, NVIDIA DLSS offers image quality that is better or equivalent to TAA, with a significantly lower performance penalty.

 

NVIDIA DLSS 2X = Ultra High Quality

NVIDIA also offers a DLSS 2X mode, which is designed to deliver ultra high quality renders that are very close to that of 64X super sampling.

How NVIDIA DLSS Works

Deep Learning Using NVIDIA DNN

The first step in creating DLSS actually begins with NVIDIA generating thousands of “ground truth” reference images that are supersampled or “jittered” 64 times. Basically, the same image is rendered with 64 different sub-pixel offsets, to create an incredibly high quality 64xSS (64x supersampled) sample.

Then NVIDIA trains a DLSS deep neural network (DNN) that uses DGX SATURNV supercomputers to generate images equivalent to the 64xSS targets. By repeatedly generating an output and comparing it to the 64xSS target, the DLSS network learns to create images that closely approximates the quality of 64xSS.

After many iterations, the DLSS network will “know” how to generate images close to the quality of 64xSS, while avoiding the blurring, disocclusion and transparency that affects traditional anti-aliasing methods like TAA. This example of DLSS 2X shows how it avoids the blurring of the semi-transparent overlay.

After the deep neural network generates the DLSS algorithms for that game, it’s ready for use in the actual game. This is where the GeForce RTX’s Tensor Cores come in.

Tensor Cores

A key component of NVIDIA DLSS are the Tensor Cores in the GeForce RTX graphics cards. These are new processing cores designed to accelerate large matrix operations.

They allow the GeForce RTX graphics cards to deliver far superior AI inference performance than the previous Pascal CUDA cores, or a CPU for the matter.

Using the DLSS algorithms generated specifically for that particular game, the Tensor Cores can now infer how the frame can be rendered with an image quality that is equal to, or better than, TAA with about half the shading work. Note that this is using the standard DLSS mode, and not the higher-quality DLSS 2X mode.

The NVIDIA DLSS FAQ

Here are the answers to some common questions that we believe you may be wondering about DLSS.

  1. Does NVIDIA DLSS work on Pascal or earlier GPUs?
    No. DLSS requires the use of the new Tensor Cores, that are not available in Pascal or earlier GPUs.
  2. Does NVIDIA DLSS automatically work in all games?
    No. NVIDIA DLSS requires two components to work :
    a) the game must support DLSS – NVIDIA says it’s simple for any game developer to add it to their game
    b) the graphics driver must support DLSS for that particular game – essentially, the driver should have the pre-generated DLSS algorithms for the game

  1. How big are the DLSS algorithms?
    According to NVIDIA, the algorithms for each game are small in size – in the tens of MB.
  2. Where are the DLSS algorithms stored?
    They are stored in the NVIDIA GeForce drivers. You will need to update your driver to add algorithms for more games, as support expands.
  3. Do we need to install NVIDIA GeForce Experience?
    No, GeForce Experience is not necessary to support DLSS. You only need to install the NVIDIA GeForce driver.

  1. Are game developers charged to have their DLSS algorithms generated?
    No, NVIDIA does the DLSS training on their Deep Neural Network for free.
  2. What’s the speed bump if I don’t use anti-aliasing at all?
    DLSS does not give you a performance boost. It only reduces the performance penalty, while delivering image quality equal to, or better than, Temporal Anti-Aliasing.
  3. What’s the difference between DLSS and DLSS 2X?
    DLSS offers image quality equal to, or better than TAA, with lower performance penalty.
    DLSS 2X offers image quality close to that of 64X supersampling – the gold standard of image quality. NVIDIA does not mention the performance penalty of DLSS 2X.

NVIDIA Ansel RTX Features Revealed!

NVIDIA Ansel has been around for 2.5 years now, being introduced with the then-new NVIDIA Pascal architecture. NVIDIA takes it up a notch with the NVIDIA Turing GPUs, introducing Ansel RTX.

NVIDIA Introduces GeForce GTX 10-Series Gaming Laptops

At the Intercontinental Hotel in sunny Singapore, NVIDIA officially launched the new GeForce GTX 10-Series GPUs for laptops. They also launched a slew of new gaming laptops that boast the new GeForce GTX 10-Series GPUs from Acer, Aftershock, AORUS, ASUS and MSI. Check out the videos we took at the event!

 

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10-Series For Notebooks Revealed

John Gillooly (NVIDIA Technical Marketing Manager) kicked off the event, giving us the technical details of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10-Series for Notebooks.

 Then it was time for NVIDIA partners to reveal their new gaming laptops powered by the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10-Series GPUs.

 

Acer Predator 15 / 17 Gaming Laptops

In this video, Er Jun Liang, Product Specialist from Acer Singapore, talks about the Acer Predator G1 gaming desktop, before revealing the updated Acer Predator 15 and Predator 17 gaming laptops, powered by the new GeForce GTX 10-Series GPUs.

MSI revealed a number of gaming laptops powered by the new GeForce GTX 10-Series GPUs. The top-of-the-range MSI GT83VR Titan SLI boasts not one, but two GeForce GTX 1080 GPUs in SLI.

Up next is the MSI GT73VR Titan SLI, which has two GeForce GTX 1070 GPUs in SLI. The thin and light MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro will feature the GeForce GTX 1060.

NVIDIA Simultaneous Multi-Projection Explained

On May 6, NVIDIA revealed the first gaming GPU based on their new Pascal architecture – the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080. The GeForce GTX 1080 not only boasts the latest Pascal architecture, it is also fabricated on the new 16 nm FinFET process technology and uses the new GDDR5X memory.

Although we were not in Austin, Texas for the official launch, NVIDIA invited us to an exclusive tech briefing in Bangkok on May 20th. While these hardware specifications are well-known by now, this was a technical briefing that would give us greater insights into the other new technologies that are being introduced with the GeForce GTX 1080.

NVIDIA brought in the big guns for the tech briefing and demonstration – Nick Stam (NVIDIA Senior Technical Marketing Director), Jeff Yen (NVIDIA Senior Technical Marketing Manager) and John Gillooly (NVIDIA Technical Marketing Manager). We will be posting a series of videos of their presentations, divided into topic-specific chunks. Today, we are going to look at the new NVIDIA Simultaneous Multi-Projection Technology works.

 

NVIDIA Simultaneous Multi-Projection Explained

In this 19 minute-long video, Nick and Jeff explains how the new NVIDIA Simultaneous Multi-Projection technology will make a huge difference for gamers with multi-monitor setups, or virtual reality headsets. Both multi-monitor and virtual reality gamers will enjoy a much wider, and more realistic field of view.

On top of that, Simultaneous Multi-Projection can deliver up to 1.5X better pixel throughput, and 2X better geometry throughput for virtual reality displays! To find out how they do it, watch this video, or read the explainer below.

 

How Simultaneous Multi-Projection Delivers Better Performance

The new Simultaneous Multi-Projection architecture of the NVIDIA Pascal-based GPUs will be able to tackle two unique performance challenges that virtual reality creates – Lens Matched Shading and Single Pass Stereo.

Lens Matched Shading improves pixel shading performance by rendering closely to the warped dimensions of VR display output. This avoids rendering many pixels that would otherwise be discarded before the image is output to the VR headset.

Single Pass Stereo turbocharges geometry performance by drawing geometry only once, and then simultaneously projecting both right-eye and left-eye views of the geometry. This effectively halves the workload of traditional VR rendering, which requires the GPU to draw geometry twice — once for the left eye and once for the right eye.

Both techniques allow developers to increase performance and visual detail of their VR applications. Combined with the performance of GTX 1080 GPUs, Simultaneous Multi-Projection delivers a dramatic 2x VR performance improvement over the GeForce GTX TITAN X.

NVIDIA Ansel Explained

NVIDIA Ansel not just an in-game screenshot utility. It actually detaches you, the player, from the in-game limitations so you can capture your in-game shots in ways not possible before. You can also adjust the screenshots with a variety of post-process filters, or capture HDR images in super high resolution. You can even create 360-degree screenshots to display on your VR headset!

Here is a summary of NVIDIA Ansel’s key features :

 

Free Camera – Activating NVIDIA Ansel pauses the game and enables the Free Camera capability. This allows you to escape the first- or third-person perspective and compose your scene in any position, alignment or range, before taking unlimited high-resolution screenshots.

Super Resolution – Selecting the High Resolution option allows you to capture screenshots that are tens of thousands of pixels in size. This allows you to downsample the screenshot later, or zoom in to capture detail cannot be seen with the naked eye.

Post-Process Filters – NVIDIA Ansel comes with brightness, vignette, sketch, colour enhancer and special FX filters for added creativity. Users can even create and share their own special FX filters.

OpenEXR Capture – You can export Ansel screenshots in Industrial Light & Magic’s OpenEXR format so you can adjust the exposure, colour and levels in post-processing without creating artifacts.

360 Capture – This option allows you to create and share 360 degree screenshots for VR headsets.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Key Features Explained

On May 6, NVIDIA revealed the first gaming GPU based on their new Pascal architecture – the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080. The GeForce GTX 1080 not only boasts the latest Pascal architecture, it is also fabricated on the new 16 nm FinFET process technology and uses the new GDDR5X memory.

Although we were not in Austin, Texas for the official launch, NVIDIA invited us to an exclusive tech briefing in Bangkok on May 20th. While these hardware specifications are well-known by now, this was a technical briefing that would give us greater insights into the other new technologies that are being introduced with the GeForce GTX 1080.

NVIDIA brought in the big guns for the tech briefing and demonstration – Nick Stam (NVIDIA Senior Technical Marketing Director), Jeff Yen (NVIDIA Senior Technical Marketing Manager) and John Gillooly (NVIDIA Technical Marketing Manager). We will be posting a series of videos of their presentations, divided into topic-specific chunks, starting with this one on the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080’s key features.

 

GeForce GTX 1080 Key Features Explained

In this 19 minute video, Nick Stam talks about the five marvels of the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card. He showed just how much more powerful and efficient the GeForce GTX 1080 is compared to the previous Maxwell generation of GPUs.

For the technically-minded, Nick also delved into the specific optimisations in the NVIDIA Pascal GPU. Find out how they crafted it for a higher clock speed and Pascal’s new 4th generation delta colour compression technology. Check it out!

For your reference, here are the five marvels of NVIDIA Pascal :
  • Next-Gen GPU Architecture- Pascal is optimized for performance per watt. The GTX 1080 is 3x more power efficient than the Maxwell Architecture.
  • 16nm FinFET Process- The GTX 1080 is the first gaming GPUs designed for the 16nm FinFET process, which uses smaller, faster transistors that can be packed together more densely. Its 7.2 billion transistors deliver a dramatic increase in performance and efficiency.
  • Advanced Memory- Pascal-based GPUs are the first to harness the power of 8GB of Micron’s GDDR5X memory. The 256-bit memory interface runs at 10Gb/sec., helping to drive 1.7x higher effective memory bandwidth than that delivered by regular GDDR5.
  • Superb Craftsmanship- Increases in bandwidth and power efficiency allow the GTX 1080 to run at clock speeds never before possible — over 1700 MHz — while consuming only 180 watts of power. New asynchronous compute advances improve efficiency and gaming performance. And new GPU Boost 3 technology supports advanced overclocking functionality.
  • Groundbreaking Gaming Technology- NVIDIA is changing the face of gaming from development to play to sharing. New NVIDIA VRWorks software features let game developers bring unprecedented immersiveness to gaming environments. NVIDIA’s Ansel technology lets gamers share their gaming experiences and explore gaming worlds in new ways.
