Fact Check: RM1K CMCO Fine For Sitting Side By Side In Car!

Will you get a RM 1,000 fine for sitting side by side in a car during the CMCO / PKPB lockdown?

Is a passenger supposed to sit behind the driver, for social distancing reasons, during the lockdown?

Take a look at the viral posts, and find out what the facts really are!

Claims : RM1K CMCO Fine For Sitting Side By Side In A Car!

This message is going viral on WhatsApp – evidence that a passenger just got fined RM 1,000 for sitting next to the driver during the CMCO lockdown!

Take a look at the message and picture of the police compound the driver allegedly received.

info sharing from my colleague, now car allow 2 pax right but have to 1 front 1 behind. his fren 2 also sit front get fine 1K. no argue

For those who prefer to read proper English instead of Manglish, here is our “translation” :

Sharing information passed on by my colleague.

Two persons are allowed in the car, but the passenger must sit behind the driver.

His friend sat in front with him and was fined RM 1,000.

There was no way to argue out of this fine.

Note : We intentionally added the HOAX overlay to prevent the images from being further misused.

This second warning circulated later, with a voice message in Hokkien, claiming that the police issued his friend this compound for letting her daughter sit next to her.

RM1K CMCO Fine For Sitting Side By Side In Car : Bullshit!

This is yet another hoax, and here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : Two Persons Are Allowed To Go Out Together

The Malaysian National Security Council (MKN) released these SOPs for three regions under CMCO / PKPB lockdown :

The three SOPs state clearly that two persons per household are allowed to go out together to purchase food and essentials.

Fact #2 : There Is No Limit On Commercial Vehicles

According to the MKN SOP, there is no new limit on vehicles carrying goods and providing essential services, including those involved in business and industrial activities.

The number of people in such vehicles are limited to what’s allowed by the commercial vehicle licence.

For example, if a delivery van is licensed for up to 3 people, then 3 people may sit together in that delivery van.

Fact #3 : Taxis + E-hailing Vehicles Are Limited To 2 Passengers

The MKN SOP specifically limits taxis and e-hailing vehicles to 2 passengers.

That means a total of 3 people are allowed in a car, and two of them will definitely be sitting side by side.

So it will not be logical for the police to issue a CMCO fine for people sitting side by side in any vehicle.

Fact #4 : No Requirement For A Passenger To Sit Behind The Driver

For the police to issue a fine, it must be specifically forbidden in the CMCO / PKPB SOP for two persons to sit side by side in a vehicle.

There is no such requirement in the CMCO / PKPB SOP, so it is not possible for the police to issue such a fine.

Fact #5 : That Man Was Fined For Not Socially Distancing In A Restaurant

My eagle-eyed friend, Jory, pointed out that the man was actually fined for not socially distancing himself in a restaurant.

We zoomed into the police compound, and we can see where the offence took place – Restoran Shada Maju.

A quick check on Google Maps gave us the address of this restaurant :

121, Jalan Tengku Badar, Port Klang, Selangor

And guess what was written at the upper right corner of the police compound? The very same address!

Under the MKN SOPs that were first issued, only two persons may sit at the same table if they are dining in a restaurant.

The police is empowered to issue a RM 1,000 fine to those who flout this social distancing rule during the CMCO period.

According to the compound, that was why this man was fined RM 1,000 on 14 October 2020 – the first day of the CMCO lockdown in Selangor.

Only on 15 October 2020 did Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announce that larger tables in restaurants may seat up to 4 people at the same time.

Fact #6 : That Lady Was Fined For Not Wearing A Face Mask

The lady’s compound was not for letting her daughter sit next to her in the car, but rather – for not wearing a face mask outside an air-conditioning shop in Rawang Mutiara.

Mac Camera Cover Guide : Why Apple Is Wrong!

Apple recently advised everyone not to cover the camera of their Mac laptops, and rely instead on the camera indicator light.

Find out why Apple is WRONG, and why you need to physically cover your Mac computer’s camera!

Mac Camera Cover : What Is It For?

Cybersecurity specialists have long advocated covering the built-in camera of your computers, not just MacBook laptops or Mac desktops, with a camera cover of some sort.

This prevents hackers from taking over that camera, and secretly recording you. This has implications beyond just recording your embarrassing moments for blackmail.

With access to your laptop camera, hackers can determine when you are away from home, who lives at your home, who you are working with, and even where you currently are.

Apple : Don’t Use A Camera Cover For Your Mac

In their recent HT211148 tech advisory, they asked Mac laptop (MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro) users not to use any camera cover.

Recommended : Warning : Using A Camera Cover Can Damage Your MacBook!

Instead, they recommended that you use these two built-in features for your privacy :

A. The Green Camera Indicator Light

Apple points out that your Mac computer has a camera indicator light that glows green whenever the camera is active.

They also claimed that the camera is designed not to activate unless its indicator light is also turned on.

B. The Camera Access Control

As an additional measure built into macOS Mojave or later, you must give an app permission before it can use your Mac computer’s camera.

To view which apps has access to your Mac computer’s camera, and to revoke any app’s access :

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Security & Privacy, then click Privacy.
  2. Select Camera.
  3. Select the tickbox next to an app to allow it to access your camera.Deselect the tickbox to turn off access for that app.If you turn off access for an app, you’re asked to turn it on again the next time that app tries to use your camera.

Why Apple Is Wrong, And You Need To Cover Your Mac Camera!

Apple fans may hate us for this, but they are wrong. You must physically cover your Mac computer’s camera to protect yourself.

Hackers Always Disable The Indicator Light

Mac computers are not the only ones to feature an indicator light for their built-in cameras. Most computers with a built-in webcam have such an indicator light.

It is, therefore, SOP for hackers to disable the indicator light after gaining control of the camera. Camfecting attacks won’t work if you are aware that the camera is turned on…

Apple asserts that the camera and its indicator light on Mac computers are wired in series, so the camera won’t work if the indicator light is turned off.

However, a 2013 Johns Hopkins University paper showed how it was possible to disable the indicator light of a Mac computer’s webcam, even though the camera module had a “hardware interlock”.

This isn’t just an obscure research subject. The FBI has the capability to covertly activate a computer’s camera without triggering the indicator light, according to Marcus Thomas, the former assistant director of FBI’s Operational Technology Division.

The only ways to prevent such attacks would be to either turn off your computer, or physically cover the camera.

Hackers Won’t Ask You For Permission

Security researcher Ryan Pickren showed in April 2020 how seven flaws in Apple Safari can let malicious websites hijack your camera and microphone to spy on you.

All you have to do is click on a link, and it lets the malicious website gain access to your webcam without asking for permission.

So much for the Mac Camera Access Control feature…

You May Not Notice The Light

Even if the camera indicator light is not disabled, it doesn’t mean you will immediately realise when the light turns on.

By the time you realise the green light is actually glowing, it may already be too late.

This is partly because it emits a steady glow, and doesn’t blink. Of course, a blinking light is bloody irritating, but we are more likely to notice it than a static green glow.

The only way to prevent that is to physically cover the camera.

Hackers Can Turn On Sleeping Or Hibernating Computers

Don’t assume that just because your Mac computer is sleeping or hibernating, hackers cannot access its camera.

They can potentially wake your computer, turn on the camera and record from it, with the indicator light turned off.

Security researcher Pedro Vilaça showed in 2015 how it was possible to remotely “root” and take over a Mac computer after it wakes up from sleep mode of 30 seconds or longer.

Irrespective of the method used, once hackers gain control of your computer, they can turn on its Wake On LAN (WOL) feature to remotely wake up your computer, like what the Ryuk ransomware does.

The only way to prevent that is to turn off your computer, or physically cover the camera.

Cybercriminals Can Trick You With A Fake Blackmail

Even if cybercriminals are unable to access your camera, they can still trick you into believing they somehow took compromising photos or videos from it.

They send out thousands of spam emails every day to trick people into believing they have been caught on camera.

People who don’t use a camera cover can be convinced into believing that their webcams were somehow compromised, and tricked into paying up to avoid exposure.

The only way to prevent that is to physically cover the camera.

The Best Way To Cover Your Mac Computer Camera

While we strongly advise you to cover your Mac computer camera, that does not mean you should risk damaging your display.

Laptop Computers (MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro)

According to Apple, we should not use any camera cover that is more than 0.1 mm thick. That basically rules out any camera cover, because it is impossible to make one that thin.

They also advise again using anything that leaves an adhesive residue. So that means cellophane tape (Scotch tape) and packaging tape should be avoided.

So here are the best options for you to consider, based on your requirements :

  1. If you don’t intend to use the camera at all
    a) Use your laptop in clamshell mode, with a separate monitor, keyboard and mouse
    b) Cover the camera with masking tape, which is gentle and leaves no residue
  2. If you plan to use the camera
    – Cut a small piece of sticky note, so that there is an adhesive part and a non-adhesive part.
    – Alternatively, cut a piece of masking tape, and fold part of it to create a non-adhesive portion.
    – Cover the camera with the adhesive part
    – You can then use the non-adhesive portion to pull it off whenever you need to use the camera

Desktop Computers (iMac, iMac Pro)

Desktop computers like the iMac or iMac Pro don’t have to worry about damaging their displays with camera covers of any thickness.

We therefore recommend using a proper camera cover that slides to let you use the camera whenever you want to, and physically cover it whenever you don’t.

Just make sure the camera cover does not use excessively strong adhesive, or leaves a residue that will require using solvent to remove, which could damage the display coating!

Fact Check : Wear Face Mask In Car Or Get FINED RM1,000?

Is the police on a rampage targeting car drivers who do not wear a face mask while driving, fining them RM1,000 if caught?!

Find out what’s the viral warning that got people so angry on social media, and what the FACTS really are!

Updated @ 2020-07-29 : Added face mask requirements for taxis, e-hailing vehicles, and school buses / vans.

Originally posted @ 2020-07-27

Claim : Wear A Face Mask In Car Or Get Fined RM1,000!

This startling warning went viral on social media, claiming that the Malaysian police are on a rampage, issuing RM1,000 fines to car drivers who do not wear a face mask while driving!

Everyone be very careful as Police are now on the rampage concerning Face Mask.

My friend together with another passenger just got stopped by a group of young Police guys (3 of them) and were issued with summons of RM 1,000 each because the Police say that if you were travelling alone you can be in the car without mask but if more then 1 person everyone in the car MUST wear mask at all times!

No, You Won’t Get Fined For Not Wearing A Face Mask In Your Car

This is yet another Internet hoax… for now.

The Malaysia government could, in the future, institute such a requirement, but at the moment – this is NOT TRUE.

That’s why we intentionally placed a HOAX overlay to the screenshot above, to avoid it from being further shared.

Fact #1 : Compulsory Wearing Of Face Mask Only Starts In August!

On 23 July 2020, Senior Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that the face mask will be mandatory in these public spaces starting 1 August 2020.

  • Inside public transportation
  • Crowded public spaces
  • Areas where social distancing is impossible

Those who flout the mandatory face mask rule will be subject to a fine of up to RM 1,000.

However, this new requirement doesn’t start until August, so claims that the police are issuing fines for not wearing a face mask right now are FALSE.

Fact #2 : No Requirement To Wear A Face Mask In Your Own Car

While we will soon be required to wear a face mask in public spaces, there is NO REQUIREMENT to wear a face mask in your own car.

You are only required to wear a face mask inside public transportation, not your own car.

Fact #3 : No Report Of Anyone Getting Fined For Not Wearing Face Masks In Car

The Malaysian police have been actively warning people against breaking the government’s COVID-19 preventive measures.

They even made public massive fines for those who violate the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Regulations 2020.

Yet there has been no report of the police issuing fines for not wearing a face mask inside a car.

Neither would there be such fines because face masks are not yet mandatory, not until August 2020.

Fact #4 : Face Masks Are Required In School Buses / Vans

As per the Malaysia Transportation Ministry SOP issued on 9 July 2020, face masks are mandatory in school buses and vans.

Both the driver, as well as the students, must wear face masks while they are in the school bus / van.

Fact #5 : Face Masks Are Required In Taxis & E-Hailing Vehicles

As per the Malaysia Transportation Ministry SOP issued on 23 June 2020, face masks are mandatory in taxis and e-hailing vehicles.

Both the driver, as well as passengers, must wear face masks while they are in the taxi or e-hailing vehicle.

Mark Zuckerberg Fact Check : My Wife China And Not Pretty

Clickbait websites are sharing a post that Mark Zuckerberg wrote called My Wife China And Not Pretty.

Many praised it, calling him a true gentleman. Many shared it as an example of Mark Zuckerberg’s intelligence in choosing a wife with inner beauty.

Find out what Mark Zuckerberg wrote about his Chinese wife, and what the FACTS really are!

Mark Zuckerberg Allegedly Wrote This : My Wife China And Not Pretty

So many ask me, why do I choose Chinese wife who is not beautiful while I (according to them) is the one who has excessive wealth?

I should (according to them) I can get a wife who is “more” than my current wife, priscilla chan.

First of all to answer that question, I want to discuss what a beautiful woman is? and what is a woman not beautiful?

Honestly, I myself have many opportunities to meet beautiful women, many of them want to be my wife, but what is called “beautiful women” is mostly heart like glass, very fragile.

If you are sick as cranky like a king’s daughter, and arrogant, arrogant, and will always ask me why is it so rich but don’t want to change the car?

I know their goal of wanting to be my wife is to show off in the jet set environment, after which there will be more demands as a rich man’s wife.

A woman is as beautiful as however, if her heart can only demand, still looks ugly, her soul is also dirty.

Such a woman is just said to be an ugly woman, given free I don’t want to!

“Beauty outside will be reduced as age, but beauty from the inside will increase its value as age” that’s how Chinese proverb says, therefore I try to avoid to contact with things that quickly descends its value.

Then from them came another question, what do I like about priscilla chan, my wife?

“The expression of a woman’s face is a reflection of her heart” her smile always amazes me.

Since pregnant, Priscilla completely ignored the changes that happened to the expression of her face due to her pregnancy, kept dressed simple, without grooming, but precisely her happiness I felt fully and also seen to others.

I like the simplicity.

I like her look.

Priscilla is a passionate woman but wise, brave but loving, leader but can also support others.

I love everything while with her, I feel so comfortable & at ease.

I don’t feel like Priscilla is using me or boasting over me. In addition to having high intellectual intelligence, she also has high emotional intelligence, don’t forget that Priscilla is a graduate of Harvard University medicine.

You can try the university entrance test, majoring in law, medicine, economics is the majors that people grab, even though passing the entry test is not necessarily you can pass well.

So actually if you want to show off, it’s better for me to show off priscilla, not the other way around.

“Marriage is like a pair of shoes, only the wearer who knows the shoes are comfortable to wear or not” Priscilla is best suited for me, and I feel priscilla is the most ideal couple on the face of this earth.

I used to get acquainted with Priscilla in the queue in the toilet. In his eyes, I am just a nerd, nothing more. From that moment on I said in my heart “This is my soulmate”

In your eyes, Priscilla is a woman not beautiful, but in my eyes she is the beautiful woman and most compatible with me.

I couldn’t resist showing off my photos with Priscilla being so happy. In the photo looks like me and priscilla are so peaceful & natural.

“SIMPLE IS BEAUTIFUL”

Mark Zuckerberg (founder of FACEBOOK)

Our Verdict : Misogynistic BULLSHIT!

The My Wife China And Not Pretty essay was NOT written by Mark Zuckerberg, and is utter misogynistic bullshit. Here is a short summary of our debunking :

  • Mark Zuckerberg did not write that, and has never commented on his wife’s looks.
  • The writer has horrible grammar and spelling, and is probably a Chinese native.
  • Priscilla Chan graduated from medical school at USC, not Harvard.

It is also shocking to see so many people think that it’s admirable for any man to say that he loves his wife even though she’s Chinese and not pretty.

That’s really misogynistic, and even racist. Think about it.

Mark Zuckerberg Did NOT Write My Wife China And Not Pretty

For those who are now asking, “How do you know that? You were not in the room!“, here are the reasons why we know that for sure…

Fact #1 : Mark Zuckerberg Writes Well

You guys are aware that Mark Zuckerberg has a Facebook page, right? If you read ANY of his posts, you will realise that he can write with PROPER GRAMMAR.

The My Wife China and Not Pretty essay reads like some Chinese person wrote it in Mandarin, and had it translated into English by Google Translate.

How on Earth does anyone believe that Mark Zuckerberg would write an essay with such horrible grammar?

Take a look at this 2015 Facebook post, where he announced that Priscilla was pregnant. Look at how well he wrote it :

Fact #2 : Mark Zuckerberg Did Not Write It

The picture was misappropriated from his 2 January 2020 Facebook post, in which he wished everyone Happy New Year.

If you go through his posts, you will NOT find a single post about his wife being “China and not pretty”.

Fact #3 : Mark Zuckerberg Would Never Sign Off Like That

Never mind Mark Zuckerberg…. Who on Earth would sign off a Facebook post or article like this???

Mark Zuckerberg (founder of FACEBOOK)

His name is clearly visible at the top of his Facebook posts. And his name would be posted right under the title of every article he wrote that is published in the media.

And seriously – do you really think he needs to remind people that he founded Facebook?

Fact #4 : Mark Zuckerberg Has Never Commented On Priscilla’s Looks

As far as we can determine, Mark Zuckerberg has never commented on Priscilla’s looks. He has always complimented her in other ways :

Even in this Annie Leibovitz picture of both of them, he commented on her expression, not her looks.

Fact #5 : Priscilla Chan Graduated From USC’s Medical School

Priscilla Chan graduated from Harvard University, but she did not study medicine there. She graduated from Harvard with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology.

Did Mark Zuckerberg really forget that his wife graduated from University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine?

Phone Hack Fact Check : Argentina Is Doing It?

Warnings about a new phone hack called Argentina Is Doing It are circulating on social media.

Find out what the Argentina Is Doing It phone hack is all about, and if it’s really true!

Argentina Is Doing It : A Video Phone Hack?

Messages about this new phone hack, called Argentina Is Doing It, started circulating today on WhatsApp and Twitter :

Just a heads up….They are going to start circulating a video on WhatsApp that shows how the Covid19 curve is flattening in Argentina. The file is called “Argentina is doing it”, do not open it or see it, it hacks your phone in 10 seconds and it cannot be stopped in any way. Pass the information on to your family and friends.

Now they also said it on CNN

Hackers are going to start circulating a video on WhatsApp that shows how the Covid19 curve is flattening in Argentina. The file is called “Argentina is doing it”, do not open it or see it, it hacks your phone in 10 seconds and it cannot be stopped in any way. Pass the information on to your family and friends.

Now they also said it on CNN

There is a video circulating WhatsApp that shows how the Covid19 curve is flattening in Argentina. The file is called “Argentina is doing it”, do NOT open it or see it, it hacks your phone in 10 seconds and it cannot be stopped in any way. RT!!

Argentina Is Doing It Phone Hack : Complete Bullshit

As you may surmise from the HOAX overlay we placed on the screenshots, there is no such phone hack that uses a COVID-19 video called Argentina Is Doing It. Here are the reasons why…

Reason #1 : There Is No Such Video

There is no COVID-19 video called Argentina Is Doing It. It simply does not exist.

Reason #2 : Argentina Is Far From Flattening The Curve

And such a video on Argentina flattening the curve is unlikely to be created for some time to come, because Argentina is FAR from flattening the curve.

As this graph shows, the number of new cases are increasing weekly. On 16 July, over 3600 new cases were detected, bringing the total of COVID-19 cases to just under 115,000.

Reason #3 : The Story Is Illogical

Consider this for a second – how would anyone know what hackers are planning to do? Or what they are calling it?

If hackers actually created such a malware, they would have released it. Why wait?

Reason #4 : A Video Cannot Hack Your Phone Just Like That

While not completely impossible, it would be impossible for a video to hack phones that easily.

It is plausible for a video to be created to exploit a bug in a specific video player or operating system, just like how the Android wallpaper malware worked.

Such a malware would only be able to attack specific operating systems (Android or iOS), or a specific media player. It cannot just work on every phone – that only happens in movies.

Reason #5 : CNN Never Reported On Such A Video

While the hoax claims that CNN reported on this video, they did no such thing. There is no CNN report on a phone hack using a video called Argentina Is Doing It.

The most recent post on CNN about Argentina’s COVID-19 situation was a report on 26 June 2020, about the reimposition of the Buenos Aires lockdown, due to accelerated COVID-19 spread.

Warning : Using A Camera Cover Can Damage Your MacBook!

After years of letting third-party companies sell camera covers, Apple just issued a warning that using a camera cover can damage your MacBook laptop!

Find out what’s going on, and why using a camera cover may be critical for your privacy, but can damage your MacBook!

Warning : Using A Camera Cover Can Damage Your MacBook!

In a new technical advisory, Apple warns that closing your MacBook laptop with a camera cover attached could physically damage the display, due to the limited clearance between the display and the chassis.

In addition, installing a camera cover can block the ambient light sensor located next to the camera. This will prevent features like automatic brightness and True Tone from working properly.

If you close your Mac notebook with a camera cover installed, you might damage your display because the clearance between the display and keyboard is designed to very tight tolerances.

Covering the built-in camera might also interfere with the ambient light sensor and prevent features like automatic brightness and technical advisory from working.

Instead of using a camera cover, Apple recommends relying on the camera indicator light to tell you when it is actively recording you.

This is a VERY BAD idea, which we will elaborate in this article : Apple Is Wrong. You Need To Cover Your Mac Camera!

What If You MUST Use A Camera Cover?

If your organisation or work requires you to use a camera cover, Apple issued these recommendations :

  • Make sure the camera cover is not thicker than 0.1 mm.
  • Avoid using a camera cover that leaves adhesive residue.
  • If you install a camera cover that is thicker than 0.1 mm, remove the camera cover before closing your computer.

For Americans and anyone else still stuck with Imperial measurements, 0.1 mm = 0.00393 inch.

This example of an ultra-thin camera cover designed for the MacBook is 8X too thick, according to Apple.

It is physically impossible to create a camera cover that thin. In other words, Apple is telling you yet again NOT to use an actual camera cover!

Instead, try using a tiny piece of sticky note. It is not only thin, it is also soft. Just make sure it covers only the camera, and not the ambient light sensor.

Will TikTok Be Banned In Pakistan After Student’s Death?

Will TikTok be banned by Pakistan after the death of a student today, like how PUBG was suspended recently?

Student’s Tragic Death While Shooting TikTok Video

Earlier today, 10 July 2020, a 14 year-old student in Pakistan accidentally shot himself while shooting a TikTok video, in the Bagan neighbourhood of Abbottabad, Pakistan.

The 14 year-old student, identified as Abdul Samad, was killed after he accidentally fired the gun while filming himself on TikTok.

Will TikTok Be Banned In Pakistan After Student Death?

This new tragedy follows a string of unfortunate deaths in Pakistan, while teenagers and children attempt to make popular TikTok videos :

  • June 2020 : 17 year-old boy accidentally pulled the trigger of his father’s gun while filming himself holding the gun to his temple in a TikTok video.
  • April 2020 : 22 year-old man died after being hit by a train, while performing a TikTok challenge at the Jumma Goth railway station.
  • March 2020 : a policeman was accidentally shot and killed while trying to snatch his gun back from a female friend who took his gun to film her TikTok video
  • December 2019 : 16 year-old boy accidentally shot himself while recording a TikTok video.

Considering PUBG was recently suspended after a student committed suicide, it seems likely that Pakistan may be forced to order a suspension of TikTok after this student’s death.

Recommended : India Bans 59 Chinese Apps, Including TikTok and WeChat!

Should TikTok be held responsible for these deaths? Arguably, they have to consider if it is really smart to allow videos of people showing off and shooting guns on a short video platform that many children and teenagers use unsupervised.

There is no age check so anyone can watch those videos, irrespective of how young they are. Heck, you don’t even need an account to watch!

TikTok Controversies Keep Piling Up!

While TikTok is very popular with children and teenagers, it keeps getting wracked by controversies, some of its own doing.

It was caught spying on what we type in other apps, not once but TWICE. Coupled with Chinese belligerence in the Himalayas, that led to India banning TikTok together with 58 other Chinese apps.

Its penchant for promoting TikTok challenges led to deaths and injuries from the Skull Breaker / Tripping Jump Challenge.

More recently, it powered the George Floyd Challenge, which was not only extremely racist but also dangerous for children to imitate.

Fact Check : AirAsia Banned Wheeled Cabin Luggage?

People are outraged that AirAsia has apparently banned wheeled cabin luggage to facilitate social distancing during embarkation and disembarkation.

Find out what is this AirAsia cabin luggage ban all about, and what the facts really are…

Claim : AirAsia Temporarily Bans Wheeled Cabin Luggage!

Quite a few websites are sharing what they claimed are a new AirAsia cabin baggage policy, which temporarily bans wheeled luggage to ensure social distancing during embarkation and disembarkation.

All guests (except infants) are allowed to carry on board ONLY 1 piece of cabin baggage which can be either:

One (1) Laptop bag or one (1) handbag or one (1) small bag:

  • MUST NOT exceed the dimensions of 40cm (H) X 30cm (W) X 10cm (L).
  • MUST FIT under the seat in front of you.
  • MUST NOT weigh more than 7kg.

If your cabin baggage cannot fit under the seat in front of you:

  • You will be given a complimentary check in for the cabin bag that weighs less than 7kg. Please check-in your baggage at the counter.
  • If the bag weighs more than 7kg, extra airport charges apply for each kg of weight.
  • The 7kg complimentary check-in baggage should be treated separately from the standard check-in baggage.

People also shared the news on social media. Here is one example :

This new policy sure is shocking because it would mean that AirAsia travellers will have to cough up for checked luggage, or worse – end up paying A LOT MORE at the airport.

But wait… is this even true? Let’s find out…

AirAsia Banned Wheeled Cabin Luggage : Yes, But No Longer…

This temporary AirAsia cabin luggage policy which got everyone riled up is true, but is no longer in effect… starting tomorrow! Here are the facts…

Fact #1 : AirAsia Did Temporarily Ban Wheeled Cabin Luggage

First of all, we have to point out that this isn’t exactly fake news. It is just OLD NEWS.

The restricted cabin luggage policy was part of preventive measures against COVID-19, when AirAsia was permitted to restart domestic flights in:

  • Malaysia (29 April 2020),
  • Thailand (1 May 2020),
  • the Philippines (1 June 2020),
  • India (4 May 2020), and
  • Indonesia (7 May 2020).

Here is the relevant section on their FAQ on precautionary measures while flying with AirAsia during the COVID-19 pandemic, which was posted on 29 April 2020 :

7. What are my cabin baggage limits?

To facilitate social distancing and minimise physical contact when boarding and disembarkation, only ONE piece of cabin baggage is allowed for each guest. More details are available here. All other baggage aside from handbags or laptop bags will need to be checked-in. Please proceed to the check-in counter if you have any enquiry.

Fact #2 : That Restricted Cabin Luggage Policy Ends 6 July 2020

AirAsia actually updated the cabin luggage policy page today, to state that the old policy will be reinstated effective 7 July 2020.

In other words, the restricted cabin luggage policy they introduced on 29 April 2020, ends today.

You are allowed to bring onboard two (2) pieces of bag as part of your cabin baggage allowance with the total weight of both items not exceeding 7kg.

One (1) piece of cabin bag must not exceed 56cm x 36cm x 23cm including the handles, wheels and side pockets. This bag must be able to fit in the overhead compartment in the aircraft cabin.

You may also carry one (1) piece of laptop bag, handbag, backpack or any other small bag which must not exceed 40cm x 30cm x 10cm. This item must be able to fit under the seat in front of you.

Fact #3 : Infants < 2 Years Old Never Had Cabin Baggage Allowance

At least one website claimed that infants under the age of 2 no longer have any cabin luggage allowance, under the new policy.

However, that was always the case even before the COVID-19 pandemic. Only children 2 years and older have cabin luggage allowances – 7 kg, the same as adults.

The only exception is on AirAsia India flights – starting 10 July 2020, infants below 2 years of age will be allocated 7 kg of hand baggage.

Fact #4 : Baby Strollers / Buggies / Prams Are Carried FOC

At least one website claimed that baby strollers must meet cabin baggage allowable dimensions, or you must purchase a checked baggage allowance.

That is not true.

Baby strollers / buggies / prams are carried free of charge on AirAsia flights as checked baggage, provided they are being used by a child or infant.

Those who wish to carry their strollers into the cabin must make sure it can be folded to fit the cabin baggage allowances.

myBurgerLab : Exposing A Troll Or Cyberbullying A Student?

myBurgerLab recently posted a private conversation they had with a student, exposing him for being rude and asking the public to “help roast this fella“.

To help “roast” the student, they shared his name and the college he was studying at, even tagging his college publicly. This has led many to wonder if they weaponised social media to cyberbully the student.

Find out what happened, and why this has incensed some netizens into speaking out against what myBurgerLab has done.

myBurgerLab vs Student : What Happened?

On 3 July 2020, a BERJAYA TVET College student privately messaged myBurgerLab to ask for help with his college project.

When he did not receive a reply after 2 hours, he sent them a rude comment, “Useless company.. Asking stuff didn’t even reply shit

That kickstarted a conversation which myBurgerLab later posted publicly, asking the public to “Help roast this fella“, sharing his Facebook profile and the college he was from, even tagging his college in their post.

But after a public lash-back, they edited their post, not once, not twice, but FIVE TIMES, with these changes :

  • removing their call to roast the student for his rude remarks
  • removing their tagging of BERJAYA TVET College
  • crossing out the student’s name in their screenshot of his Facebook profile page

While many of those who read the posts universally agreed that that the student was rude, many pointed out that myBurgerLab’s response was far from professional.

Quite a few felt that sharing the student’s Facebook profile page while asking their supporters to “help roast” him was disproportionate, and can even be considered as cyberbullying the student.

Christopher Gomez wrote a great piece below in the Beyond Malaysia group, which he kindly shared with us.

We are covering this issue to remind everyone about the dangers of cyberbullying.

While businesses may be unfairly attacked on social media, it doesn’t give them the right to weaponise it and send their supporters to target someone they don’t like.

We say this to myBurgerLab and everyone else who supported their actions – SAY NO TO CYBERBULLYING!

myBurgerLab : Exposing A Troll Or Cyberbullying A Student?

by Christopher Gomez

After reading and assessing the contents, I’m of the opinion that Burger Lab should be brought to task.

They insulted the student. Then even went to the extent of publicly shaming this student, his mother and his school. And if all those acts weren’t horrible enough, they went on to ask the wider community to ‘attack’ him via roasting him publicly.

Via their edits, you might see that it seems to look like their response was seemingly thought out, intentional, and meant to cause ‘hurt’.

And they made 5 edits. It took them 5 (FIVE) edits over the span of an hour, to seemingly justify their actions.

In the edits they made to that post, it seemed to me that all this was “content” for them. Perhaps to them, whether the outcome out of all this was good or not-so-good, it’s still publicity for them.

To me, their response to the student seemed premeditated.

To me, they weaponized social media.

They got upset and took it out on a “kid”, his mother and even on his school, and then they weaponized their social media following by seemingly attempting to get their audience on their side and perhaps even riled up, and attack the student (and perhaps even his parents/family/school).

To me, their use of the word “repercussions” in this context shows the kind of company, Burger Lab, is. They seem to demonstrate clearly that they knew what they were doing, when they put out their response. They shamed the boy, his parents and his school.

And their “apologies” line in Point No. 5 of their post, shows me how much they just wanted to quickly brush aside their mistake and then turn the focus back on trolling/bullying the kid.

In Point No. 3 of their post, they even go to the extent of justifying their actions and downplaying the dangers of revealing a user’s identity ( irrespective if it is was an in-real-life identity or a pseudonym ).

BTW, take note that in Point No. 4 of their post, they admitted that they were shaming him in public. But they justified it by showing that their action was some kind of ‘service to society’.

I strongly urge Malaysians to really think about how they spend their money in Malaysia. In the United States, Japan and many of the countries in the EU, you’ll see that the public stops their patronage of a business when that business behaves poorly. That’s consumer activism at its easiest — it’s simple, quick and effective.

Even in Singapore this form of consumer activism is actively practiced. When businesses behave like jerks (no matter what the reason may be) Singaporeans respond by not supporting them.

I’m writing this to encourage each of you to really think about where you want your money to go?

I’m calling a spade a spade — I would be furious with my kid if he or she did this ( in real life or on social media ) but potentially putting my child in harms way is disgusting and life threatening. The way Burger Lab went about this, they should be reported and charges should be brought against them.

Heck, I am sure none of you will tolerate your kid behaving this way, but if you received a response such as this from a company, you know they have put your child’s life (for the present time and future) in danger.

Approximately two months ago, it was reported in the Malaysian media that we lost a young lady to cyberbullying. The whole country was in shock. The local authorities are still working on this problem, and are trying to find solutions.

So as a group, as a community let’s be part of the solution. Begin by:

  • Stopping your support for businesses that bully, are seemingly proud that they behave like bullies, encourages others to bully, and are seemingly proud they were able to try to encourage others to bully.
  • Stopping our support for business that endanger the lives of our kids, exploits the kindness of our community, and encourages us to behave in such a horrible and potentially irreversibly damaging way.

I, now, personally think Burger Lab doesn’t deserve to be in business. Is there a possibility that their management will respond the way World of Buzz did? Maybe. But there’s more and more evidence out there that shows that the staff of a company behaves according to a company’s culture, and the company’s culture is set in place and nurtured by its management. Malaysian companies or companies operating in Malaysia cannot keep giving excuses, shoddy apologies and shoddy solutions and keep remaining in business.

Granted, the student who sent the private message was rude, but he could have been cyber-bullied (and is probably already being cyber/bullied) to the point of no return. Personally, this is something I can’t overlook, and I can’t forgive.

myBurgerLab vs Student : Latest Updates

On 5 July 2020, the controversy led myBurgerLab co-founder Renyi Chin to post a public statement :

Hey everyone. I hope everyone is having a great weekend. It’s time to address the issue.

First of all, my name is Renyi and I’m one of the cofounder of myBurgerLab. I’ve been responsible for maintaining the voice and direction of myBurgerLab for the most part, since its inception in 2012. So for those assuming we hired an intern and he “screwed up”, nope, it was me. I replied to him and made the post.

While it may seem like we all have split opinions on this, allow me to explain why I replied and posted as I did. Roast me personally later.

The myBurgerLab team addresses hundreds of messages every other week on social media – some nice, some unkind but mostly harmless. One thing though, we always make it a point to attend to every educational request, especially for projects. Yes, we do miss out on some, but we’ll always try to reply and make time to take a call, zoom, or even meet up. Don’t take my word for it, our record will show that we‘ve always been advocates for higher learning and are active participants in that process.

Almost all educational project collabs are productive and insightful, for both the student and the company. But every now and then we do get requests from students that can be really absurd. We even have students basically asking us to write their report for them (student: I give you questions, you type out answer can?).

On Friday afternoon, a student sent us a pm on FB, and expected an immediate reply. We usually attend to non-pressing matters after office hours. Unfortunately, he chose to hurl insults at us after just two hours before we had a chance to reply. With this, I already knew that we would not afford him the time that could be better spent on others. In my usual tone, I told him to bugger off nicely. Which was then met with more insults. If you think I should have acted professionally, I did.

My intention doing what I did thereafter, is to let everyone know that just because you are sitting behind a screen, it gives you no right to be abusive. It’s never ok to mistreat people in the service industry just because we are here to serve, that doesn’t make it okay for you to spit on us. In response, I wanted to bring light to his abusive online persona. Yes, I agree that the original post calling to roast him was wrong. It was intended to be a joke, a poor attempt at that, and was unfortunately taken into another direction. I corrected the post accordingly after reading the comments. I apologize for the poor choice of words in the original post.

I believe that calling out a bully is not bullying. In the face of any abuse, speak up. We shouldn’t be afraid to stand up for ourselves and for the people we care about. We are here to service our customers and to serve the community however we can. As with everyone else in the service industry, we have to deal with the occasional rude and inconsiderate customer, with a smile and as professionally as we can. But if ever a customer berates us or insults the team, we will not tolerate it. And if any member of our staff is faced with such abuse, we will stand up for them.

That is what I personally chose to do. I took a stand for the brand that I love and the brand that we all spent so much time and energy growing. No one is gonna call it “sh*t” and get away with it, especially unprovoked. Look, I’d be the first to admit we aren’t perfect, if our service or burgers are not up to standard, let us know, we always welcome the feedback and will strive to do better. But in this case, the student was malicious to start with and I had no intention to let it slide.

So if you feel disappointed that I did it. I’m sorry. But I’ll stand up for my brand over and over again (with a better context) if need be.

At the moment, we are working closely with the Berjaya school team to rectify what was done wrong and I’ve personally volunteered my time for community service in the school (as a form of accountability on my part) to whichever capacity they see fit.

For those that pm me to check in on me, and sent words of solidarity, thank you. And to those who still don’t see eye to eye with me, Okay, in all fairness, you can roast me now or choose to have a dialogue. Your call. I’ll attend to it when I can.

Sincerely,
Renyi.

On 6 July 2020, myBurgerLab further edited their post, removing the student’s Facebook profile after he apologised to them.

They also stated that they will be working with the school to “provide better quality education and work experiences for the betterment of the industry“.

Obviously, myBurgerLab believes that they were completely in the right to post the student’s private messages as an object lesson in the consequences of being rude to a business.

It is unfortunate that they do not see the danger in asking people to teach the student a lesson. That goes beyond just publicly shaming someone for acting like an asshole, and is far beyond what the student deserves for a few seconds of stupidity.

Again, we would like everyone to be aware about the dangers of CYBERBULLYING. Those with significant social media presence should be particularly careful in how they respond.

Remember – with great power, comes great responsibility…

TikTok Reverse-Engineered : A Peek At How It Works!

TikTok is getting exposed as a really bad piece of malware, and it doesn’t help when people like bangarlol claim to have reverse-engineered it, giving us a peek at how it all works!

TikTok : Controversies After Controversies

TikTok is a Chinese social networking service built around short video clips. Developed and owned by ByteDance which is based in Beijing, it is very popular amongst young people and even children.

This has led to numerous controversies as TikTok proved slow or reluctant to remove dangerous or racist videos :

TikTok has also been dogged by accusations of snooping on users, but that got serious recently, when they were caught twice spying on what we typed, followed by a ban by the Indian government.

TikTok Reverse-Engineered : A Peek At How It Works!

bangorlol, who claims to reverse-engineer apps for a living, claimed to have figured out how TikTok worked, and what it was “harvesting” from its users.

Data Harvesting Gone Mad?

He warned that TikTok is a “data collection service” that is “essentially malware that is targeting children“, collecting everything they can get their hands on, even data unnecessary for the features they offer.

  • other apps that you installed, even those you deleted!
  • everything on your network, including network configuration and devices!
  • your GPS location – roughly once every 30 seconds!

This data collection is so critical that the TikTok app is disabled if you block communications to their data analytics host at the DNS level.

What You Don’t Know Can’t Hurt You?

The TikTok app itself is specially designed to obfuscate (make it difficult to figure out) what they are really doing.

The First Taste Of Fame…

According to bangorlol, the TikTok service will entice you by letting your first post get more likes, giving you a taste of going viral.

This will hopefully hook you into using their app, which would lead to more users as your friends will want to join in too.

Remote Payload?

bangorlol found code that allows for the downloading of a remote file, unzipping it and then executing the binary – something no legitimate app will ever do.

Can’t Be Bothered With SSL But Encrypt The Data They Collect?

Apparently, TikTok has not been using SSL (HTTPS) for a long time, leaking user email addresses through their HTTP REST API, as well as the real names and birthdays of their users.

Yet they took the effort to encrypt all of the data they collect from their users, even changing the encryption keys with every update, so you don’t know what they’re collecting.

TikTok Reverse-Engineered : The Full bangorlol Post

For those who want to read bangorlol’s full post, here it is :

I reverse-engineered the app, and feel confident in stating that I have a very strong understanding for how the app operates (or at least operated as of a few months ago).

TikTok is a data collection service that is thinly-veiled as a social network. If there is an API to get information on you, your contacts, or your device… well, they’re using it.

  • Phone hardware (cpu type, number of course, hardware ids, screen dimensions, dpi, memory usage, disk space, etc)
  • Other apps you have installed (I’ve even seen some I’ve deleted show up in their analytics payload – maybe using as cached value?)
  • Everything network-related (ip, local ip, router mac, your mac, wifi access point name)
  • Whether or not you’re rooted/jailbroken
  • Some variants of the app had GPS pinging enabled at the time, roughly once every 30 seconds – this is enabled by default if you ever location-tag a post IIRC
  • They set up a local proxy server on your device for “transcoding media”, but that can be abused very easily as it has zero authentication

The scariest part of all of this is that much of the logging they’re doing is remotely configurable, and unless you reverse every single one of their native libraries (have fun reading all of that assembly, assuming you can get past their customized fork of OLLVM!!!) and manually inspect every single obfuscated function. They have several different protections in place to prevent you from reversing or debugging the app as well. App behavior changes slightly if they know you’re trying to figure out what they’re doing. There’s also a few snippets of code on the Android version that allows for the downloading of a remote zip file, unzipping it, and executing said binary. There is zero reason a mobile app would need this functionality legitimately.

On top of all of the above, they weren’t even using HTTPS for the longest time. They leaked users’ email addresses in their HTTP REST API, as well as their secondary emails used for password resets. Don’t forget about users’ real names and birthdays, too. It was allllll publicly viewable a few months ago if you MITM’d the application.

They provide users with a taste of “virality” to entice them to stay on the platform. Your first TikTok post will likely garner quite a bit of likes, regardless of how good it is.. assuming you get past the initial moderation queue if thats still a thing. Most users end up chasing the dragon. Oh, there’s also a ton of creepy old men who have direct access to children on the app, and I’ve personally seen (and reported) some really suspect stuff. 40-50 year old men getting 8-10 year old girls to do “duets” with them with sexually suggestive songs. Those videos are posted publicly. TikTok has direct messaging functionality.

Here’s the thing though.. they don’t want you to know how much information they’re collecting on you, and the security implications of all of that data in one place, en masse, are fucking huge. They encrypt all of the analytics requests with an algorithm that changes with every update (at the very least the keys change) just so you can’t see what they’re doing. They also made it so you cannot use the app at all if you block communication to their analytics host off at the DNS-level.

For what it’s worth I’ve reversed the Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Twitter apps. They don’t collect anywhere near the same amount of data that TikTok does, and they sure as hell aren’t outright trying to hide exactly whats being sent like TikTok is. It’s like comparing a cup of water to the ocean – they just don’t compare.

tl;dr; I’m a nerd who figures out how apps work for a job. Calling it an advertising platform is an understatement. TikTok is essentially malware that is targeting children. Don’t use TikTok. Don’t let your friends and family use it.

India Bans 59 Chinese Apps, Including TikTok and WeChat!

After TikTok was exposed for spying on what we type, it got banned by India together with 58 other Chinese apps, for cybersecurity reasons.

Here is everything you need to know about this new ban, including the full list of banned apps!

India Bans 59 Chinese Apps, Including TikTok and WeChat!

Just two days ago, we showed how TikTok was caught spying on what we type in other apps, not once but TWICE.

The very next day, TikTok joined WeChat as part of a ban by India on 59 Chinese apps identified as malicious or posing data and privacy risks to their users.

The Ministry of Information Technology has received many complaints from various sources including several reports about misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India.

The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures.

Based on input from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) and representatives from both inside and outside the Indian Parliament, the Indian government announced the ban of 59 Chinese apps.

No doubt, the recent high altitude fatal brawl between Chinese and Indian troops in the Himalayas played some part in this decision.

India Bans 59 Chinese Apps : The Implications

This ban by India means that Apple App Store, Google Play Store and even the HUAWEI AppGallery must stop providing access to those 59 banned apps in India.

If you already have them installed, then they will still work. You just cannot install them from official app stores within India.

If you still wish to download and install them, Android users can download and install their APK (Android Application Package) installation files from their official websites and APK repositories.

Apple iOS users, as usual, are out of luck, unless they are using jailbroken devices.

TikTok Caught Spying What We Type In Other Apps!

TikTok was caught spying on what we type in other apps, not once, but TWICE… so far.

Find out what’s going on, and what you should do about it!

TikTok : What Is It?

This has led to numerous controversies as TikTok proved slow or reluctant to remove dangerous or racist videos :

TikTok Caught Spying What We Type In Other Apps… TWICE!

Beyond their obvious desire to grow their service at the expense of the danger to real people, there have been cybersecurity and privacy concerns about TikTok.

In a space of just four months, TikTok has been caught spying on what we type in OTHER APPS… not once, but TWICE. Take a look at this video expose…

TikTok Caught Spying On What We Type : First Time

Let’s start in March 2020, when Talal Has Bakry and Tommy Mysk exposed how they found that TikTok was spying on what we typed in other apps through the pasteboard / clipboard.

In the video above, you can see how TikTok immediately asked to read all text stored in the pasteboard, whenever it is launched.

The pasteboard contains everything you copied earlier – messages from other people, quotes from an article, or far more sensitive stuff like your password or account number.

And because of Apple’s universal clipboard feature, this means everything you copy on your Mac or iPad will be available on your iPhone, and therefore TikTok.

To be clear, TikTok was just one of the many apps that they found to be spying on what we type. Here were the apps they confirmed were spying on the pasteboard / clipboard.

At that time, TikTok told Zak Doffman that it was Google Ads that was snooping into the pasteboard / clipboard.

The clipboard access issues showed up due to third-party SDKs, in our case an older version Google Ads SDK. We are in the processes of updating so that the third-party SDK will no longer have access.

They claimed it was because TikTok was using an older Google Ads SDK, which they have since replaced with a newer version.

TikTok Caught Spying On What We Type : Second Time

BFast forward to June, and the release of iOS 14 beta. The new clipboard warning feature in iOS 14 appears to have caught TikTok spying on the pasteboard / clipboard once again.

In the dramatic video shared by Jeremy Burge – the 1:35 point in our video above – he shows TikTok grabbing the contents of his iPhone’s clipboard every 1-3 keystrokes, as he typed in Instagram!

Okay so TikTok is grabbing the contents of my clipboard every 1-3 keystrokes. iOS 14 is snitching on it with the new paste notification
— Jeremy Burge (@jeremyburge) June 24, 2020

This is even more egregious than the first time they spied on the pasteboard / clipboard! Instead of just looking at what you copied into the clipboard earlier, TikTok is literally reading what you are typing in a different app!

TikTok claimed that this issue was “triggered by a feature designed to identify repetitive, spammy behaviour“, and that they have already submitted an updated app without this “anti-spam feature“.

TikTok Caught Spying : What Should YOU Do?

If you are not a frequent TikTok user, the answer is simple – UNINSTALL TikTok.

If you really like TikTok, you should immediately update to the latest version, which ByteDance claims will no longer read your clipboard because it has both an updated Google Ads SDK, as well as their anti-spam feature removed.

Either way, if you are concerned about privacy issues with TikTok, you should write to privacy@tiktok.com and express your deep concerns about not letting them read what you are typing, whether it is in their app or other apps.

No matter what day load this website, it will always tell you that the offer is limited until today. And there is always 1936 lockdown packages left – this figure never changes.

After going through a meaningless survey, you are asked to share this message to seven WhatsApp groups, in order to qualify for the money.

Which government initiative do you know would require you to share on WhatsApp groups? That should have been yet another clue this is just another scam.

To make it more convincing, there is a fake comment section of people claiming to have successfully received their money.

Regardless of how many times you refresh the page, the same people will always be listed and the time code and number of people never changes.

FG Lockdown Funds Scam : More Details

Fact Check : Lincoln Memorial Defaced By BLM Protestors!

Did Black Lives Matter protestors deface the famous Abraham Lincoln statue at the Lincoln Memorial?

Find out if the Lincoln Memorial was really vandalised, and what the FACTS really are!

Claim : Lincoln Memorial Defaced By BLM Protestors!

Black Lives Matter protestors are being accused of defacing the famous Abraham Lincoln statue at the Lincoln Memorial, and here is the picture to prove it!

This picture of the Abraham Lincoln statue spray painted with graffiti has been shared on Facebook, Twitter, etc. as evidence of the Black Lives Matter movement’s complete lack of respect for sacred American monuments.

The graffiti had messages like Black + Brown Lives Matter, #BLM, Justice, The Real Martyrs, George Floyd.

Lincoln Memorial Defaced By BLM Protestors : The Facts

Fact #1 : The Picture Is Fake

The picture is fake, and was edited by mapping graffiti over a picture of the Abraham Lincoln statue.

The creator did a poor job of it, lopping off the left side of the head. If that was intentionally meant to look like protestors did it, it was done badly.

The graffiti also looked odd, because he/she was mapping a 2D image over what’s really a 3D object.

Fact #2 : The Lincoln Memorial Was Protected By The National Guard

It would also be quite a feat for the BLM protestors to vandalise the Abraham Lincoln statue itself, since the DC National Guard was deployed to protect it.

Members of the D.C. National Guard stand on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial as demonstrators participate in a peaceful protest against police brutality and the death of George Floyd (Photo by Win McNamee/Getty Images)

Fact #3 : An Outer Column Was Slightly Spray-Painted

One of the outer columns at the Lincoln Memorial had Yall Not Tired Yet? spray-painted in black on the night of 30 May 2020.

However, there is no way to know whether BLM protestors or anti-protestors was responsible. The message is ambiguous.

Photo Credit : Carolyn Kaster, early Sunday May 31, 2020

Further down, the National World War II Memorial was vandalised, this time with a clearer meaning – Do Black Vets Count?

Fact #4 : National Mall and Memorial Parks Confirmed The Limited Damage

National Mall and Memorial Parks confirmed both graffitis and cleaned them up by 4 June 2020.

Fact #5 : The Lincoln Memorial Had Been Vandalised In The Past

Frankly speaking, this isn’t the first time the Lincoln Memorial was vandalised or defaced. In fact, someone actually sprayed green paint on the Abraham Lincoln statue in 2013!

In 2017, explicit graffiti was spray-painted on an inner column in the Lincoln Memorial.

Disinformation Campaigns

This fake picture is part of a slew of similar fake news about the George Floyd / BLM protests in the US :

So beware of similar fake posts, because they appear to be part of disinformation campaigns.

George Floyd Challenge Exposed : Racist + Dangerous!

Heard of the George Floyd Challenge? It’s the new social media challenge that just started on Snapchat, TikTok, Reddit and Facebook.

Find out what the George Floyd Challenge is all about, and why NO ONE should do it!

George Floyd Challenge : What Is It?

The George Floyd Challenge is a new social media challenge, which involves taking pictures or a video of one person kneeling on another person’s neck for 8-9 minutes.

The idea is to prove that Derek Chauvin, the Minnesota police officer who kneeled on George Floyd, could not possibly be responsible for his death.

George Floyd Challenge : Racist + Dangerous!

Derek Chauvin’s supporters believe that he did not cause George Floyd to die, simply by kneeling on his neck. So they recreated the act, which eventually became known as the George Floyd Challenge.

No one should perform it because it can injure or even kill the play-victim. Parents should definitely warn their children not to mimic these idiots!

Even if you lack empathy, understand that attempting such a racist act will ruin your life. Your reputation and future will be destroyed if you do this.

Don’t believe me? Look at what happened to those who performed this racist and dangerous challenge!

27 May 2020

The first public example was probably what Dave Hollenbeck, a school wrestling coach, posted on 27 May 2020 :

Not dead yet I’m doing this for Are (our) police officers the media is a race baiting machine and I’m tired of it I’m going to speak out every time if you don’t like that I’m sorry but I love All people.. Wake up America.

Dave was quickly dismissed by the Bethel School District. And even when he tried to start a GoFundMe campaign, it was quickly deactivated, with just $50 raised.

28 May 2020

Two construction workers in Bethel, Minnesota, attempted the George Floyd Challenge, claiming “Ivan said he can fully breathe with all my weight on his neck”.

The outrage forced Shade Tree Construction’s owner Mark Strandlund to fire both workers, one of whom was his own son. Even so, Housing First Minnesota dropped Shade Tree Construction as a member.

They were later identified as Ivan Fields (the man on the ground), and Austin Strandlund (owner’s son), both seniors at the Legacy Christian Academy…

29 May 2020

Two white female high school seniors posted a video on Snapchat performing the challenge, with the caption “Aw ging can’t breathe“.

One girl is seen kneeling over the other, who shouts that she cannot breathe, while they both laugh. A third person can be heard cheering them on, saying, “You can do it!”

Both students have now been forced to rescind their enrolments into the University of Missouri and the Missouri State University.

30 May 2020

Three English teenagers – two 19-years old and one 18-years old – posted a Snapchat video of the George Floyd Challenge, which was shared on the Warwick University freshers Facebook page.

On 31 May 2020, the Northumbria Police arrested all three of them, and are investigating the incident as a hate crime.

And it looks like they will no longer be joining Warwick University, as planned…

30 May 2020

Evan Rolla, a fitness instructor at LA Fitness in West Palm Beach, Florida, posted his George Floyd Challenge pictures on Facebook. He lost his job.

2 June 2020

Two English men from north-east Fife posted this picture on Snapchat, with the caption “George floyd challenge 2020“.

One of them – a 26-year old man – was arrested by Police Scotland the next day.

2 June 2020

Two students from the Gray Stone Day School (Grades 6-12) posted this picture on Snapchat, with the caption “george floyd challenge“.

On 4 June 2020, the school posted this statement (partial) :

This post and others like it are clear acts of hate and racism that are without question unacceptable. While this did occur outside of the school, we have a moral obligation to hold students to a higher standard.

We are appalled by this, and we will adhere to legal guidelines for public schools as they relate to the discipline of a minor.

4 June 2020

This couple posted their version of the challenge on Facebook, with the man actually wearing a blue I Can’t Breathe t-shirt!

Paula McGuigan initially claimed she was hacked, but later removed her Facebook page and apologised for posting the picture :

I know that there was a Facebook post with me in it and I can see how this truly looks disrespectful to the death of George Floyd.

This was 100% not the intent of this post. I would never disrespect the death of any innocent person no matter what their race is.

Hien is Asian and we were trying to say that Asian Lives matter as do all races. I look at the post and am so remorseful that this was done. I 100% stand f or justice and equality for all walks of life.

Again my deepest apologies and regrets for this poor taste post. A lesson very well learned that sometimes what we are trying to say does not come across.

4 June 2020

These two racist fools were identified as Sergio Gomez and Alejandro Taranzo, both students of the University of Maryland (UMD), which quickly responded on Friday, 5 May 2020 :

We learned via social media of two individuals who reenacted the unacceptable and tragic death of George Floyd. We are outraged and condemn these actions and images in no uncertain terms. The individuals involved were immediately referred to the Office of Student Conduct.

Skull Breaker Challenge Continues To Injure Children!

The damage caused by the Skull Breaker challenge on TikTok and other social media platforms cannot be understated. Even after TikTok was forced to ban those videos, the prank continues to injure children…

It did not help that many people thought it was a hoax, or dismissed it as a childish prank. So we decided to compile this list of injuries that have been confirmed to be attributed to the Skull Breaker challenge.

Please make sure you share this list out, so that parents and schools can warn children about the dangers and consequences of the Skull Breaker challenge.

The Skull Breaker Challenge Explained!

The tripping jump challenge appears to have originated in South America as the Skull Breaker Challenge on TikTok, so you may hear it referred to as Rompcráneos or Rasteira in Spanish.

Many people pooh-poohed the initial reports of the Skull Breaker TikTok challenge, claiming that it was a hoax.  But it quickly spread across the world, as kids and even adults try to record themselves pranking others with it.

The challenge is simple in concept, but takes two to play it and an innocent victim to trick.

  1. Trick the victim into thinking that the two of you want to record a slow-motion video of all three jumping.
  2. Set up a camera to record the action, or have someone record it for you.
  3. As the victim jumps, you both kick his / her legs, so the victim falls flat while you guys laugh.
  4. Share the video on TikTok for likes!

Although at least one girl died from the challenge, it took months of public outrage before TikTok agreed to remove all such videos from their platform.

Skull Breaker TikTok Challenge Continues To Injure Children!

While TikTok may have agreed to remove Skull Breaker videos when they find them, children (well, bullies) are apparently continuing with the challenge!

Either TikTok has not been particularly diligent, or the pranksters and influencers have given the challenge a new name. But the fact still remains – children continue to be victimised and injured by this stupid challenge.

We are also greatly concerned by some people who insist that this is an Internet hoax, or a mass hysteria event; and that parents and schools should not scare children with such silly tales.

Therefore, we decided to compile this public record of the injuries caused by the Skull Breaker TikTok challenge, so that there can be no doubt that the Skull Breaker TikTok challenge is REAL, and it continues to injure children.

11 November 2019 : Emanuela Medeiros (Killed)

16-year old Emanuela died after hitting her head on the ground during the Skull Breaker challenge (known then as the rasteira challenge) at the Antônio Fagundes Municipal School in Mossoró, Brazil.

Circa January 2020 : Lilian Calabianqui (NA)

Lilian was tricked into performing the Skull Breaker challenge by her own sons, the social media influencers who call themselves Irmaos Fuinha.

They were the ones who popularised the Skull Breaker challenge on TikTok, and arguably made it go global.

In their video, it was obvious that they knew about the danger and caught their mother before she hit her head on the floor.

Unfortunately, they did not warn the millions of young fans about that – and so, it set off a chain of injuries across the globe.

Late January 2020 : Marc and Stacy Shenker’s Son (Physical Therapy)

Marc and Stacy Shenker’s 13-year old son suffered a concussion in the Skull Breaker Challenge at the Cherry Hill middle school in New Jersey.

A month after that incident, he still complains of lethargy and headaches, and is on academic restriction. He is also starting physical therapy.

4 February 2020 : Unknown Student (NA)

The video of the Skull Breaker TikTok challenge being performed on a student at the Santo Tomas de Aquino School in Caracas, Venezuela went viral.

The very next day, the Chacao municipality posted this on Instagram, warning against the challenge :

4 February 2020 : Unknown Student (NA)

A 16-year old girl was bullied by two students into performing the challenge at the South Dade Senior High School :

According to the victim, two other students at the school asked her to jump as high as she could. One of the students jumped with her to see who could jump higher while the other stood off to the side.

“They kept asking me until I said yes,” the 16-year-old freshman said.

When the victim jumped, the two students swept her legs out from under her, causing her to fall backwards and hurt her neck and head.

“I jumped really high and I remember them kicking me off my feet and I fell on my head,” she said.

The two perpetrators including the student filming the challenge were disciplined, but the victim had to transfer to another school, and is currently being treated for her injuries.

5 February 2020 : Justin Hodson (Hospitalised)

Justin was tricked into the Skull Breaker TikTok challenge, and hit his back and head. He lost consciousness trying to get up, and fell forward, injuring his face as well.

He was hospitalised with a head injury, stitches to his face, severe cuts inside his mouth and two front teeth injured.

Early February 2020 : Olivia Ross

In Portland, Oregon, Olivia Ross was tricked into performing the Skull Breaker challenge by two upperclassmen seniors at the Mountainside High School. She blacked out and had a headache after hitting her head :

“These seniors asked me if I would jump for their TikTok video. I remember like blacking out for a second and I started to get like an instant pressure headache,” Ross said.

You can clearly see from the screenshot below, that the two school seniors then posted the video on TikTok.

Olivia’s mother, Lindsay Zobrist, pointed out that anyone who types “Skull Breaking Challenge” or “Jumping Prank” or “Jump Trip” into TikTok will see hundreds of such videos.

11 February 2020 : Parker Smith (Broken Arm)

12-year old Parker Smith from Alabama broke both the radius and ulna bones of his right arm, after being tricked into participating in the Skull Breaker Challenge.

14 February 2020 : Aubrey Ortiz (Hospitalised)

12-year old Aubrey Ortiz from the South Brook Middle School was tricked by a boy and a girl at her school, who asked her to “learn a dance”.

“They kicked my legs over, and (one girl) grabbed my legs and slammed them to the ground,” Ortiz said. “I went numb and couldn’t do anything. I struggled getting up.”

23 February 2020 : Kathleen DeJesus (Hospitalised)

13-year old Kathleen DeJesus was targeted at the Lawrence Massachusetts Middle School, and spent two days in the hospital for a severe concussion :

“I was screaming that I needed an ambulance,” said Kathleen. “I was thinking like ‘Oh my God I’m going to lose my life over this game.’ I should have never done it.”

25 February 2020 : Ke’Avion Hearn (Hospitalised)

Ke’Avion Hearn – a brain cancer survivor – was tricked into performing the challenge, and knocked unconscious by his classmates at the Southeast Arkansas Preparatory High School :

“They said all you go to do is jump,” Ke’Avion recalled. He says he never knew what those classmates were about to do to him.

“I jumped, they kind of kicked me out under my legs so I can’t land,” he said. “All I remember is being on the floor.”

His mother, Kimberly Hearn said, “He doesn’t deserve that, no child deserves that. You made him fall on his head. That’s got to be so cruel, and you found it to be so funny.”

Hearn pointed out that getting hit on the head was even more dangerous for Ke’Avion, who underwent multiple surgeries and chemotherapy a few years ago for a large brain tumour.

TikTok Finally Bans Deadly Skull Breaker Challenge!

TikTok finally addressed the deadly Tripping Jump / Skull Breaker Challenge controversy, by banning those videos!

Find out what the Tripping Jump / Skull Breaker Challenge is all about, and why TikTok finally banned those videos!

Tripping Jump / Skull Breaker Challenge Explained!

The tripping jump challenge appears to have originated in South America as the Skullbreaker Challenge on TikTok, so you may hear it referred to as Rompcráneos or Rasteira in Spanish.

It quickly spread across the world, as kids and even adults try to record themselves pranking others with it on TikTok!

The challenge is simple in concept, but takes two to play it and an innocent victim to make fun of.

Funny, right? Yeah, if you are an asshole… because this challenge is known as the Skull Breaker Challenge for a reason!

Tripping Jump / Skull Breaker Challenge Danger!

Take a look at this video which showcases five different tripping jump / skull breaker challenge videos. Watch how ALL five victims hit the back of their heads, and at least two of them are knocked unconscious!

The Austin ISD Police Department opened an investigation into one case involving a student at the Austin Independent School District, who sustained head injuries after being tricked into the skull breaker challenge at the school library.

In Florida, parents of a victim pressed charges against two Seabreeze High School students who performed the skull breaker challenge on their daughter (who was said to be a special needs student).

Valerie Hodson of Arizona shared that her son was knocked unconscious with a head injury after two boys performed the tripping jump challenge on him.

Some perpetrators are even bullying students into becoming their victims, as a tripping jump challenge incident at the South Dade Senior High School on 4 February 2020 demonstrated :

“They kept asking me until I said yes,” the 16-year-old freshman said.

When the victim jumped, the two students swept her legs out from under her, causing her to fall backwards and hurt her neck and head.

“I jumped really high and I remember them kicking me off my feet and I fell on my head,” she said.

The two perpetrators including the student filming the challenge were disciplined, but the victim had to transfer to another school, and is currently being treated for her injuries.

This challenge has even claimed at least one life – a 16-year old Emanuela Medeiros who hit her head on the floor, and died.

Unfortunately, her death did not stop Brazilian social media influencers, Irmãos Fuinha, from trying to popularise this stupid challenge.

They only apologised for doing this after they were severely criticised by Brazilian celebrities and medical professionals!

TikTok Bans Tripping Jump / Skull Breaker Challenge!

Yesterday, TikTok issued this official statement on the Tripping Jump / Skull Breaker challenge :

The safety and well-being of our users is a top priority at TikTok.

As made clear in our Community Guidelines, we do not allow content that encourages, promotes, or glorifies dangerous challenges that might lead to injury, and this includes the skull breaker challenge.

Our content moderation team are on the lookout and we will remove any such content promptly.

It took them long enough to act. Sadly, a girl had to die, and a number of kids (and even adults) were injured.

PS. If you are worried about the Fuinha (@fuinha) brothers, don’t worry – TikTok will never take down a popular channel. All is forgiven, because they have a new Level Up Challenge for all of their young fans on TikTok!

To be fair, at least TikTok has finally banned the videos (if not the “influencers” who popularised them)… Facebook appears to have left the videos up, albeit with a warning cover over them.

Look! TikTok Has New Celebrities!

To help us forget about such sad matters, they also announced that 18 celebrities have joined TikTok… including Will Smith (@willsmith), The Rock (@therock), Steve Harvey (@steveharvey), and BTS (@bts_official_bighit).

Hurrah! LOOK at all that star power! All’s well now. Nothing to see here. Move along, everyone… Move on, move on…

Come on… there’s also Park Bom (@officialparkbom), MAMAMOO (@mamamoo_official), and yes, Terry Crews (@terrycrews)!

Are you NOT entertained???

Kaspersky Lab Launches The Goondus Awards!

Petaling Jaya, 18 August 2017Kaspersky Lab just launched a campaign in Asia Pacific to educate the public and spread awareness on Internet safety. Known as the Goondus Awards, the campaign is inviting submissions from the public on Internet mistakes and faux pas that have led to reputational, financial or property damage or loss for individuals.

The Goodus Awards

The Goondus Awards website which features the submissions anonymously, highlights real life incidents where a naïve or ill-informed Internet practice led to some form of misfortune.

“We want to educate people about safer Internet behaviours and to showcase real world examples of missteps leading to some form of loss or damage. While some stories may be humorous and even incredulous, the repercussions and damage were real and in some cases severe,” explained Sylvia Ng, General Manager, South East Asia. “As our entries are entirely anonymous, we’re encouraging a community led campaign to drive home the message that only safe practices will make the Internet safer for users.”

The Goondus Awards showcases a wide array of stories ranging from humorous occurrences to unintelligent acts and sad episodes involving monetary or reputational loss. The campaign acts as an initiative to raise cyber security awareness in an engaging form through the sharing of personal stories. It also serves to help web visitors foster positive and pleasant online experiences.

With the ease of access to the Internet, users have developed a sense of complacency or even a mild form of naivety in their daily digital lives, potentially lending themselves to becoming victims of cybercrime.

The Goondus Awards aim to remind users that they are not completely safe from cybercriminals and that they need to be vigilant, practice and maintain Internet etiquette to protect themselves.

Malaysians, including millennials and Gen Y professionals have also been burnt by the infamous love scams. According to a report by the Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) in 2016, a total of 2,497 love scam cases were reported with losses close to RM100 million. It proves that Goondus are fools for love.

The fact that identity theft can happen so close to home and lead to financial loss was very disturbing and shocking to the individuals in this example.

Goondus Awards Submission & Contest Details

The criteria for the story entries are that they must be based on actual events leading to tangible or intangible losses concerning Internet use. The winning stories will be selected by a panel of judges where participants stand a chance of winning an iPad Mini or a Tablet and even monthly prizes like a Kaspersky Lab premiums hamper.

The website also includes tips and advice from cyber security experts and elaborations on the different types of scams such as Internet love sex scams, credit for sex scams and phishing scams, to further inform users.

To submit a story, fill in the requested information such as your name, email address and contact number, along with the type of scam, story title and the full story in the website. The “Tips” section of the website features articles from the Kaspersky Lab blog and are categorised based on the various issues and forms of scams highlighted in the website. This educational content serves to advise users on how to prevent such incidents from occurring.

Cybersecurity Incidents In Malaysia

[adrotate group=”2″]

In 2016 alone, CyberSecurity Malaysia received 8,334 reports related to cyber security incidents. Between 2012 to 2016, CyberSecurity Malaysia received a total of 50,789 cyber security incidents. Of the figure, fraud contributes to almost 40 per cent or 20,141 followed by hacktivism (9,918), spam (9,210) and cyber threats (2,333).

More than 70 per cent of the incidents reported involved financial implications, including phishing, online banking fraud, credit card fraud and online scams among others. Statistics from The Royal Malaysian Police recorded 113 phishing cases resulting in total losses of RM1.91.

Comparing last year’s May and 2017’s May result in terms of cybercrime rate, is it evident that the figure has grown and especially cyber harassment case has rose over 50% according to CyberSecurity Malaysia. It is also evident that, statistics in May shows cases such as frauds, spams and malicious codes rose compared to last year.
