2021 HUAWEI MateBook D 14 : Key Features

Let’s take a look at its key features…

14-inch FullView Display

The 2021 HUAWEI MateBook D 14 comes with a 14-inch FullView Display, with a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

This is not a particularly bright display, with a maximum brightness of just 250 nits; and it only has a colour gamut of 45% NTSC.

But it is large, with narrow bezels that give it an 84% screen-to-body ratio – hence the name, FullView Display.

Performance

It is powered by the 10th Gen Intel Core i5-10210U with integrated Intel UHD Graphics.

It comes with either 8 GB or 16 GB of DDR4-3200 memory, and a fast PCIe NVMe SSD with 256 GB or 512 GB of storage.

Battery + Charging

All that is powered by a decent 42 Whr battery, paired with a compact 65 watt USB Type C fast charger.

The charger can be used to charge other USB Type C devices, and supports HUAWEI SuperCharge for certain HUAWEI smartphones.

Connectivity + Ports

The 2021 HUAWEI MateBook D 14 has Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity built-in.

On the left side, you will find a single USB Type C port, with a USB 3.2 Gen1 Type A port and a HDMI 1.4b port.

The HDMI 1.4b port can handle up to 4K displays, but only at up to 24 fps. To display at 4K @ 50 fps / 60 fps, you need HDMI 2.0.

On the right side, you will find a 3.5 mm audio port, and a single USB 2.0 Type A port.

We have to wonder though – why stick with super-old USB 2.0, instead of the much faster USB 3.0 port?

Keyboard + Touchpad

The 2021 MateBook D 14 comes with a full-sized, ten-keyless keyboard, and a large touchpad.

Pop-Up Camera

Like the MateBook X Pro we reviewed, the 2021 MateBook D 14 comes with a pop-up camera, hidden under a special camera key on the keyboard.

It pops up when you press on it, and pressing it again hides it. This is a great security measure because the camera is physically blocked until you actually need to use it – no hacker will be able to surreptitiously use it to take your photos or videos!

There is only one problem with such a design – it takes photos and videos at an unflattering upward angle. You will also always appear to look upwards on video conferences, and videos that you record.

HUAWEI Share Multi-Screen Collaboration

The 2021 MateBook D 14 supports HUAWEI Share for multi-screen collaboration.

It basically lets you connect your smartphone, and use it directly on the MateBook D 15!

You can control the apps and files on your phone directly on the laptop, even drag and drop files!

The only downside? It is limited to HUAWEI and HONOR smartphones with NFC.

HUAWEI MeeTime

The 2021 MateBook D 14 also supports HUAWEI MeeTime, which is their version of Apple FaceTime – a free, proprietary video call service.

It offers some advantages over its competitors – FaceTime, WhatsApp, etc. but can only be used by HUAWEI devices.

The 2021 HUAWEI MateBook D 14 comes in the Mystic Silver colour, with an official launch price of RM 3,499 (about US$850 / £609 / A$1,095 / S$1,129).

First, let’s start with this official HUAWEI promotional video that showcases the key features of the new 2021 MateBook laptops!

It consists of not just the two MateBook D 15 variants, but also the MateBook D 14, the MateBook 14 and the MateBook X Pro!

In their 2021 refresh, HUAWEI is offering the MateBook D 15 in two variants – the 11th Gen Edition, and the 10th Gen Edition.

As you can pretty much surmise, they are basically the same laptop, just powered by either the 11th Gen Core i5 processor, or the older 10th Gen Core i5 processor.

Let’s take a look at their key features…

15.6-inch FullView Display

The 2021 HUAWEI MateBook D 15 comes with a large 15.6-inch FullView Display, with a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

This is not a particularly bright display, with a maximum brightness of just 250 nits; and it only has a colour gamut of 45% NTSC.

But it is large, with narrow bezels that give it an 87% screen-to-body ratio – hence the name, FullView Display.

Performance

HUAWEI offers two variants, with different CPU + GPU options :

  • 11th Gen Edition : Intel Core i5-1135G7 with Intel Xe Graphics
  • 10th Gen Edition : Intel Core i5-10210U with NVIDIA GeForce MX250

They both come with fast DDR4 memory, and a fast PCIe NVMe SSD with 512 GB of storage.

Battery + Charging

All that is powered by a decent 42 Whr battery, paired with a compact 65 watt USB Type C fast charger.

The charger can be used to charge other USB Type C devices, and supports HUAWEI SuperCharge for certain HUAWEI smartphones.

Dell revealed their brand-new Dell XPS 13 2018 ultra-light laptop at CES 2018. We managed to get our hands on it… for a short time. Let us share with you our hands-on preview, as well as the key features, specifications and pictures of the Dell XPS 13 2018!

Dell revealed their Dell XPS 13 2018 ultra-light laptop at CES 2018. It introduces a new alpine white glass fibre weave material. This new material took a dedicated Dell team more than 11,500 hours and 50 trials to get right.

 

The changes are not just skin-deep. The Dell XPS 13 2018 (Amazon | Lazada) is powered by the 8th Generation Intel Core processor, and boasts up to a 1 TB SSD. It is also the first laptop in the world to feature the GORE thermal insulation – the same silica aerogel used on the Mars Rover and Stardust Probe.

Next-Generation InfinityEdge Display

The Dell XPS 13 2018 (Amazon | Lazada) introduces the next-generation InfinityEdge IPS display, with 400-nits brightness, a 23% thinner border and an 80.7% screen-to-body ratio. The optional 4K UHD display even boasts 100% sRGB colour gamut.

Smaller, Thinner, Lighter But More Powerful

The Dell XPS 13 2018 (Amazon | Lazada) is 24% smaller by volume, than the previous XPS 13. It is also 3.4 mm thinner and lighter at just 1.21 kg (2.67 pounds).

Yet, it offers even more performance with the latest 8th Generation Intel Core quad-core processor, with a faster UHD Graphics 620 graphics processor.

New Woven Glass Fiber

The Rose Gold version of the Dell XPS 13 2018 (Amazon | Lazada) introduces an alpine white woven glass fibre palm rest. The woven crystalline silica fibre is not just strong and light, it feels like silk and better dissipates heat.

The XPS 13 2018 (Amazon | Lazada) is cut from a single block of aluminium, with a carbon fibre / woven glass fibre palm rest, for maximum strength with minimal weight. The display is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 4, making it twice as resistant to damage.

Aerospace-Inspired Thermal Design

The Dell XPS 13 2018 (Amazon | Lazada) boasts a new cooler with two heat pipes and two fans, increasing its cooling capacity while allowing for a thinner form factor. It is also the first to use GORE thermal insulation to channel heat from the CPU and GPU to the heat pipes, and away from the chassis.

Windows Hello

You can either use the built-in infra-red camera to recognise your face, or the optional fingerprint reader, to log in using Windows Hello.

Far-Field Cortana

Thanks to four built-in microphones, Microsoft Cortana and Waves-enabled speech technology, the XPS 13 2018 (Amazon | Lazada) responds to your voice from 14 feet (4 meters) away.

The Dell XPS 13 2018 (9370) CES 2018 Announcement

Technology has become an expression of style for those who use it – though fashion can be fickle. One thing we do know is elegance never goes out of style.

First unveiled at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show, the XPS 13 immediately enhanced the legacy of XPS as the world’s most celebrated laptop and winner of more product awards than any other line in Dell’s history, most recently named a CES 2018 Innovation Award Honoree.

And how did it garner this latest honor? Vision and a lot of hard work.

In reimagining the XPS 13, Dell took inspiration from the realm of fashion, where rose gold remains a trending color and white accents have been growing in popularity, seen everywhere from watch bands to sneakers.

However when turning our XPS white, we strived to achieve elegance and invested more than a dozen people, 11,520 hours and 50 trials to create a new system that was as stunning inside and out. The Dell design team didn’t want to simply paint a system white – they wanted to use authentic materials and make sure the system looked as beautiful on day 1000 as it does on day 1.

With the desire to give its white palm rest a weaved appearance, the team considered different materials beyond the color limits of traditional carbon fiber. The solution? An innovative new crystalline silica material with the white color literally woven in, like a fabric, in nine composite layers. Dell is the first to use this woven glass fiber in a laptop.

Complementing the new rose gold aluminum shell of the XPS 13, the alpine white glass fiber weave is elegant to the eye and silky to the touch. Durable as it is beautiful, atop its soft-textured lattice is titanium oxide for a pearlescent sheen and UV and stain-resistant coating to prevent yellowing or staining over time.

In fact, if you get a pen mark or other stain on the white interior you can just wipe it off. And with a heat resistance superior to metal, woven glass fiber also stays cooler to facilitate longer performance.

Interesting fact: The glass fibers in one palm rest, if laid end to end, would extend for 117,500 miles, nearly enough to stretch halfway from Earth to the moon. Now that’s one giant leap.

We not only worked to create the most beautiful laptop on the market, but extended that design ethos to its matching white power cords and USB-A/USB-C adapter. And moving from style, to lifestyle, we invested in sustainable recycled ocean plastics and bamboo packaging so you can purchase with confidence knowing that Dell is doing its part to help the planet.

Besides its head-turning exterior, the all-new XPS 13 is better by every measure. Now even more portable as the smallest 13-inch laptop on the planet, its stunning InfinityEdge display fits this 13-inch laptop in an 11-inch frame. It’s a full 30% (3.4mm) thinner as well as lighter, starting at just 2.7 pounds, making the XPS 13 the ultimate in mobility and durability.

Running Windows 10 and powered by the latest Intel 8th Generation Quad Core processor, XPS 13 delivers superior mobile performance with fast booting SSDs up to 1TB. You can also expect the longest battery life of any 13-inch laptop, with almost 20 hours on FHD, up to 11 on UHD (Mobile Mark 14).

While we made the system smaller and lighter, we were able to increase the performance by 2x, over the original XPS 13 launched in 2015, and maintain the world’s most powerful 13-inch laptop in its class. So how did we do that? We have the most innovative performance and thermal engineering at Dell.

Quick Review of DVMT Mode

Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) is a concept whereby system memory is shared by both CPU and graphics processor. While this reduces cost, it also reduces the system’s performance by taking up a large portion of memory for the graphics processor.

Intel’s Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) takes that concept further by allowing the system to dynamically allocate memory resources according to the demands of the system at any point in time. The key idea in DVMT is to improve the efficiency of the memory allocated to either system or graphics processor.

The BIOS feature that controls all this is the DVMT Mode BIOS feature. It allows you to select the DVMT operating mode.

When set to Fixed, the graphics driver will reserve a fixed portion of the system memory as graphics memory. This ensures that the graphics processor has a guaranteed amount of graphics memory but the downside is once allocated, this memory cannot be used by the operating system even when it is not in use.

When set to DVMT, the graphics chip will dynamically allocate system memory as graphics memory, according to system and graphics requirements. The system memory is allocated as graphics memory when graphics-intensive applications are running but when the need for graphics memory drops, the allocated graphics memory can be released to the operating system for other uses.

When set to Both, the graphics driver will allocate a fixed amount of memory as dedicated graphics memory, as well as allow more system memory to be dynamically allocated between the graphics processor and the operating system.

It is recommended that you set this BIOS feature to DVMT for maximum performance. Setting it to DVMT ensures that system memory is dynamically allocated for optimal balance between graphics and system performance.

 

Details of DVMT Mode

The key idea in DVMT is to improve the efficiency of the memory allocated to either system or graphics processor.

To ensure better allocation of system memory, DVMT comes with three different operating modes :

But before we go into the details of each mode, it’s important to note that the system boots up with some system memory pre-allocated for graphics, irrespective of the DVMT operating mode. Depending on the motherboard manufacturer, you may or may not be allowed to select between a choice of 1MB or 8MB of pre-allocated memory.

This pre-allocated memory is dedicated to VGA/SVGA graphics and will be treated by the operating system as dedicated graphics memory. This pre-allocated memory will not be visible or accessible to the operating system. It will be used during the booting process to display the boot and splash screens, or when you run MS-DOS games and applications. It will also be used when Windows XP loads in Safe Mode.

Once an operating system with the appropriate Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver loads up, the graphics processor reclaims the pre-allocated memory for its use. But again, it is only available for use as graphics memory. It will never be made available to the operating system or applications. The Intel GMA driver then loads additional system memory according to the DVMT operating mode.

The Fixed Memory operating mode reserves a fixed amount of system memory as graphics memory. This is in addition to the memory already pre-allocated. Like pre-allocated memory, this fixed amount is no longer available to the operating system. But when the operating system reports the total system memory, it will include this amount, as opposed to pre-allocated memory.

The DVMT Memory operating mode allows the graphics driver to dynamically allocate system memory for use by the graphics processor. When no graphics-intensive operations are occuring, most of the DVMT memory can be reallocated to the operating system for other uses. When more graphics memory is required, the graphics driver will automatically reallocate more system memory for use as graphics memory.

The Fixed + DVMT Memory operating mode is an combination of the Fixed and DVMT operating modes. It allows you to allocate a fixed amount of reserved graphics memory (over the minimum pre-allocated amount), as well as a portion of system memory that can be dynamically allocated to both graphics processor and operating system.
