HONOR MagicBook X 15 : What You Need To Know!

HONOR just launched two new MagicBook X 15 laptop models. Let’s take a closer look and see what they really offer!

HONOR MagicBook X 15 : What You Need To Know!

Together with the HONOR 50 and HONOR 50 Pro smartphones, HONOR also launched two new MagicBook X 15 laptop models.

These basic laptops are part of the HUAWEI 1+8+N strategy, back when HONOR was a HUAWEI subsidiary.

And these two models appear to be a legacy of their HUAWEI heritage. We will show you why we say that…

Legacy Of HUAWEI Ban Persists

Despite being new models, the HONOR MagicBook X 15 are still powered by the 10th Gen Intel Core processors from 2019.

This appears to be a legacy of their HUAWEI heritage – HUAWEI was banned from purchasing new processors from Intel since September 2020.

They had already stocked up many processors in advanced of the ban, but can no longer purchase newer Intel processors.

The new HONOR, which was sold to Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology, is no longer affected by this ban. But it looks like they were not able to source for the latest Intel processors in time.

Performance

There are two HONOR MagicBook X 15 models, based on their processor and storage configurations :

  • 10th Gen Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 512GB storage
  • 10th Gen Intel Core i3, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage

HONOR claims that they come with a Supersized Shark Fin 2.0 Fan with up to 38% higher air intake, for better cooling performance.

They use DDR4 memory and come with a PCIe NVMe SSD, but that’s standard for laptops these days.

Display

The HONOR MagicBook X 15 comes with a large 15.6-inch display, with a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Thanks to its narrow 5.3 mm bezels on the left and right side, this display offers a 87% screen-to-body ratio.

Battery Life

The 2021 MagicBook X 15 models come with a 42 Wh battery, which HONOR says will deliver just over 7.5 hours of 1080p video playback or just over 7 hours of web browsing.

They will come with a new compact 65 watt fast charger that weighs just 200 grams. It can recharge the battery to 53% in just 30 minutes.

Other Features

Despite its low cost, it boasts an aluminium alloy body, which allows for a thinner profile and a lighter weight at just 1.56 kg.

It also comes with a fingerprint sensor built into the power button, that lets you quickly log into Windows.

Finally, it supports Multi-Screen Collaboration – another legacy of its HUAWEI heritage.

HONOR MagicBook X 15 : Price + Deal

The HONOR MagicBook X 15 is available in Malaysia starting 19 June 2021, at these price points :

  • Intel Core i5, 8GB + 512GB : RM 2,899 (about US$700 / £504 / A$929 / S$938)
  • Intel Core i3, 8GB + 256GB : RM 2,299 (about US$555 / £400 / A$737 / S$744)

On its launch date, every purchase of the MagicBook X 15 will come with :

  • Intel Core i5 : HONOR laptop backpack + Bluetooth wireless mouse
  • Intel Core i3 : HONOR laptop backpack

Unboxing The Dell XPS 13 (9300) Laptop

The Dell XPS 13 (9300) comes in a premium white cardboard box. Once you fully unbox it, you will find these items :

  • Dell XPS 13 (9300) laptop
  • Dell USB Type C to USB Type A dongle
  • 45 watt charger with integrated USB Type C cable
  • Power cord with localised plug
  • XPS 13 9300 Quick Start Guide + Safety and Regulatory Information

Dell XPS 13 (9300) : Hands-On Experience!

This Dell XPS 13 (9300) is an eminently thin and light laptop. It offers a 13.4-inch display in an 11-inch form factor that weighs only 1.27 kg, and is less than 15 mm thick.

It easily fits into the smallest laptop bag, and even a large handbag. And when you can fly again, you will love how it fits onto the airplane’s seat tray!

Once you try it out, you will find it hard to go back to regular laptops – you will find them heavy and unwieldy!

Dell XPS 13 (9300) : A Closer Look!

13.4-inch Display In 11-Inch Form Factor

This Dell XPS 13 (9300) model comes with a 4K UHD+ touch display, with a resolution of 3840 x 2400 pixel, a colour gamut of 90% DCI-P3 and DisplayHDR 400 certification.

The incredibly high resolution and wide colour gamut allow your high resolution photos and HDR content to really pop.

Dell also offers a Full HD+ display, with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels and 100% sRGB colour gamut; in both touch and non-touch options.

All three display options are 25% brighter at 500 nits, and are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6 against scratches and impact.

Cameras + Security

The thin bezel at the top conceals two cameras – a regular 720p webcam, and an infra-red camera for facial recognition.

So you can either unlock the XPS 13 using the IR camera and Windows Hello, or the fingerprint sensor, which integrated into the power button.

While its 720p webcam may be rather low in resolution, it uses a new 4-element lens for sharper image quality. It also supports temporal noise reduction to improve video quality in low-light conditions.

We hope that Dell would look at upgrading it to a 1080p camera, with a physical or electronics privacy shutter.

Performance

Our Dell XPS 13 (9300) is powered by the Intel Core i7-1065G7 – a 4-core, 8-thread processor with 8 MB of cache and built-in Iris Plus Graphics.

You can opt for a Core i5-1035G1 or the Core i3-1005G1, both of which come with integrated UHD Graphics.

A redesigned cooler keeps things cool, using a single heat pipe and evaporator design with dual condensers and GORE thermal insulation. The hot air is exhausted through the hinge at the back.

It can get a little toasty from the hot exhaust when you use it on your lap, especially if you’re doing compute-intensive tasks like rendering videos.

It also comes with 16 GB of dual-channel LPDDR4X memory running at 3733 MHz. The memory is soldered onto the motherboard and cannot be upgraded.

Our unit came with a 1 TB SK hynix PC611 PCIe NVMe SSD, but you can opt for a smaller 512 GB SSD, or a larger 2 TB SSD.

Ports

Due to its ultra-slim profile – 14.8 mm at its thickest point, the XPS 13 has very limited ports.

On the left side, you will find a microSD card reader; as well as a single Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type C) port, which supports Power Delivery and DisplayPort output

On the right side, you will find a 3.5 mm microphone and headphone combo port, with a second Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type C) port, which also supports Power Delivery and DisplayPort output.

You can plug the USB Type C charging cable into either Thunderbolt 3 port. But unless you are using it on-the-go, you really only have one free port to use.

The good news is Dell actually bundles the XPS 13 (9300) with a free USB Type C to USB Type A dongle, so you can use your USB Type A drives and devices (including cables) with it.

Keyboard + Touchpad

The Dell XPS (9300) comes an edge-to-edge keyboard, and a 17% larger touchpad for maximum working comfort.  The keyboard is backlit, and comes with larger key caps!

It definitely offers a far superior typing experience to the horrible butterfly switch keyboard used in Apple MacBook Pro laptops.

Connectivity

Our XPS 13 (9300) comes with the Killer AX1650 module, which offers Wi-Fi 6 connectivity with 2×2 antennas, and Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity.

It is much too thin to support a LAN port, but you can add LAN connectivity using a USB-C dongle.

Audio

The two long stripes on both sides of the XPS 13 are not cooling vents, but ports for its 2.5 watt stereo speakers, which are tuned with Waves MaxxAudio Pro.

Its 3.5 mm microphone / headphone combo jack is also optimised with the 360-degree Waves NX 3D virtual surround sound with head tracking.

Finally, its dual microphone array is powered by Waves MaxxVoice Pro, which supports VOIP and is Cortana Farfield-capable.

Dell XPS 13 (9300) : Performance

Our Dell XPS 13 (9300) is powered by the 15-watt Intel Core i7-1065G7 (Ice Lake) with 4 cores and 8 threads, and Iris Plus Graphics with 64 Execution Units.

It comes with 8 MB of cache, and has a 1.3 GHz base frequency that ramps up to 3.5 GHz during intensive tasks.

Our review sample came with 16 GB LPDDR4X-3733 dual-channel memory, and a 1 TB SK hynix PC611 PCIe NVMe SSD.

Work Performance : PCMark 10

The Intel Core i7-1065G7 is a 25 watt processor that can be configured to run at a lower TDP of 15 watt – to improve battery life and reduce thermal output.

At the full 25 watt TDP, it should deliver PCMark 10 scores in excess of 4700. It is obvious now that Dell configured it for the cooler 15 watt TDP. This is why benchmarks are important.

This makes the Dell XPS 13 (9300) about 7.6% slower than the HUAWEI MateBook X Pro, which uses the Intel Core i7-10510U processor.

Gaming Performance : 3DMark Time Spy

The integrated Intel Iris Plus Graphics sounds powerful on paper – with 64 Execution Units – but it is only about as fast as the NVIDIA GeForce MX130 / GeForce 940MX.

So this is most definitely NOT a gaming laptop, although you should have no problem playing older games and games that are not 3D graphics-intensive like DOTA 2.

Battery Life : YouTube + Modern Office

The Dell XPS 13 (9300) comes with a 4-cell smart lithium-ion battery that is rated for 52 Whr.

Dell claims a battery life of up to 18 hours and 49 minutes with the Full HD+ display, and up to 12 hours and 13 minutes with the 4K UHD+ display.

In our general use, we have no problem working a full day on it without recharging, which makes it really convenient when travelling.

That said, we locked the brightness at 50% – higher than the average of 40% – to see how it performs in these worst-case scenarios :

YouTube Streaming

The Dell XPS 13 (9300) lasted 8 hours 15 minutes streaming YouTube videos in theatre mode using WiFi, before its battery dropped to 10%.

PCMark 10 : Modern Office

The Dell XPS 13 (9300) lasted 6 hours 36 minutes before it powered off while running the Modern Office benchmark.

Battery : Recharging Speed

Its 65 watt fast charger took about 52.5 minutes to hit the mid-point (55%), but 2 hours 23.5 minutes to fully recharge its battery from 10%.

Here are the times it takes to recharge from 10% :

  • 15% – 5 minutes 57 seconds
  • 20% – 11 minutes 53 seconds
  • 25% – 17 minutes 45 seconds
  • 30% – 23 minutes 22 seconds
  • 35% – 29 minutes 25 seconds
  • 40% – 35 minutes 8 seconds
  • 45% – 41 minutes 22 seconds
  • 50% – 46 minutes 56 seconds
  • 55% – 52 minutes 39 seconds
  • 60% – 58 minutes 27 seconds
  • 65% – 64 minutes 13 seconds
  • 70% – 70 minutes 15 seconds
  • 75% – 76 minutes
  • 80% – 81 minutes 58 seconds
  • 85% – 89 minutes 41 seconds
  • 90% – 100 minutes 50 seconds
  • 95% – 118 minutes 45 seconds
  • 100% – 143 minutes 20 seconds

This gives it a battery life : recharging time ratio of 3.45 : 1 for video streaming, and 2.76 : 1 for office work.

As a rule of thumb, you will need to recharge its battery about 22 minutes for every hour of battery life.

Dell XPS 13 (9300) : Verdict + Award

The Dell XPS 13 (9300) is a really great ultra-light laptop for people who are always on-the-go.

It packs serious processing power, memory and a huge SSD with the latest wireless connectivity built-in, in a very thin and light package.

It is less than 15 mm at its thickest point, and weighs less than 1.3 kg. But this is something you have to hold in your hand to actually get a feel of how much engineering went into the XPS 13.

Even the latest 13-inch Apple MacBook Pro, powered by the new Apple M1 SoC, is largerthicker at 15.6 mm and weighs more at 1.4 kg!

The extremely thin profile offers some challenges to first time users – limited physical ports. Yet the XPS 13 (9300) managed to squeeze in an extra microSD card reader over the new 13-inch MacBook Pro (M1).

Even so, you will have to live with just two USB Type C ports – one of which is not available when you recharge its battery. Fortunately, the XPS 13 (9300) comes with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 wireless connectivity.

Thankfully, Dell threw in a free USB-C to USB-A dongle, so at least you have ready access to your USB Type A drives and devices out-of-the-box.

Security-conscious users will love the fingerprint sensor and IR camera, which allows for easy and secure logins. However, the webcam lacks a physical shutter, and the lid clearance is too tight to safely use a third-party shutter.

As far as battery life is concerned, the XPS 13 (9300) will last more than full day’s work without recharging. After a while, you will get used to leaving the office without the charger!

All-in-all, the Dell XPS 13 (9300) is an engineering marvel that must be experienced to truly understand. If you want the very best Windows 10 ultra-light laptop money can buy, this should be right at the top of the list.

That is why we wholeheartedly award it our Reviewer’s Choice Award!

We have to point out that this may not be quite a fair comparison since the Ryzen 7 4800U is an 8-core, 16-thread processor with an 8-core Vega GPU and a 15W TDP.

But that’s what Intel is showcasing – a face-off between their Core i7-1185G7 and the AMD Ryzen 7 4800U.

Intel Evo : Project Athena Second Edition

Intel is also introducing the Intel Evo platform, as part of the Project Athena Second Edition program.

Based on 11th Gen Core processors with Intel Iris Xe graphics, Intel Evo laptops must meet the Project Athena Second Edition experiences :

  • Consistent responsiveness on battery
  • System wake from sleep in less than 1 second
  • Nine or more hours of real-world battery life on systems with FHD displays
  • Fast charging with up to a four-hour charge in under 30 minutes on systems with FHD displays

To qualify for the Intel Evo platform and branding, laptop designs will have to meet or exceed these minimum specifications :

  • Intel Wi-Fi 6 (Gig+) 802.11ax
  • Thunderbolt 4
  • ≥ 256GB PCIe / NVMe SSD
  • ≥ 8GB Dual Channel Memory
  • Bluetooth 5 with Audio Offload
  • > 2 digital microphones of at least 63dB Signal to Noise ratio and +/- 1dB matching
  • High fidelity audio codec / speaker tuning and Intel Smart Sound Technology
  • Speaker Sound Pressure Level >78dB @ 50 cm and bass frequency <353 Hz
  • User-facing camera ≥ HD/720p @ 30fps
  • Voice Assistant with WoV – Cortana Premium Far Field requirements (≥4 m effective)

Intel oneAPI Unified Programming Model Overview!

At Supercomputing 2019, Intel unveiled their oneAPI initiative for heterogenous computing, promising to deliver a unified programming experience for developers.

Here is an overview of the Intel oneAPI unified programming model, and what it means for programmers!

The Need For Intel oneAPI

The modern computing environment is now a lot less CPU-centric, with the greater adoption of GPUs, FGPAs and custom-built accelerators (like the Alibaba Hanguang 800).

Their different scalar, vector, matrix and spatial architectures require different APIs and code bases, which complicates attempts to utilise a mix of those capabilities.

Intel oneAPI For Heterogenous Computing

Intel oneAPI promises to change all that, offering a unified programming model for those different architectures.

It allows developers to create workloads and applications for multiple architectures on their platform of choice, without the need to develop and maintain separate code bases, tools and workflow.

Intel oneAPI comprises of two components – the open industry initiative, and the Intel oneAPI beta toolkit :

oneAPI Initiative

This is a cross-architecture development model based on industry standards, and an open specification, to encourage broader adoption.

Intel oneAPI Beta Toolkit

This beta toolkit offers the Intel oneAPI specification components with direct programming (Data Parallel C++), API-based programming with performance libraries, advanced analysis and debug tools.

Developers can test code and workloads in the Intel DevCloud for oneAPI on multiple Intel architectures.

What Processors + Accelerators Are Supported By Intel oneAPI?

The beta Intel oneAPI reference implementation currently supports these Intel platforms :

  • Intel Xeon Scalable processors
  • Intel Core and Atom processors
  • Intel processor graphics (as a proxy for future Intel discrete data centre GPUs)
  • Intel FPGAs (Intel Arria, Stratix)

The oneAPI specification is designed to support a broad range of CPUs and accelerators from multiple vendors. However, it is up to those vendors to create their own oneAPI implementations and optimise them for their own hardware.

Are oneAPI Elements Open-Sourced?

Many oneAPI libraries and components are already, or will soon be open sourced.

What Companies Are Participating In The oneAPI Initiative?

According to Intel, more than 30 vendors and research organisations support the oneAPI initiative, including CERN openlab, SAP and the University of Cambridge.

Companies that create their own implementation of oneAPI and complete a self-certification process will be allowed to use the oneAPI initiative brand and logo.

Available Intel oneAPI Toolkits

At the time of its launch (17 November 2019), here are the toolkits that Intel has made available for developers to download and use :

Intel oneAPI Base Toolkit (Beta)

This foundational kit enables developers of all types to build, test, and deploy performance-driven, data-centric applications across CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs. Comes with :

[adrotate group=”2″]

The Intel Core Processor Number Guide – What They Mean!

The Intel Core processor number system changes with every generation, including the new 10th Gen Ice Lake and 10th Gen Comet Lake processors!

In this guide, we will share with you exactly what those letters and numbers mean!

10 Generations, 10 Number Systems!

Every Intel Core processor generation varies in how they are numbered. We will go through each generation from the latest 10th Gen Core all the way to the first-generation Core processors.

10th Gen Intel Core Processor Number Systems

Even though they are both part of the same 10th Gen Intel Core processor family, the Ice Lake and Comet Lake processors have different processor number systems.

10th Gen Intel Ice Lake Processors

Brand Modifier

This is what most people think of as the performance category.

  • i7 : enthusiast class, with many processing cores
  • i5 : mainstream processors
  • i3 : entry-level processors

Gen Indicator

This is now a 2-digit number 10 for the 10th Generation Intel Core processor.

SKU Numeric Digits

This is what we consumers use as a rough indicator of the processor’s overall performance.

Instead of three digits, it now uses just two digits, but the concept is the same – the higher the number, the better the processor’s performance in general.

For example, the Core i7-1068 is faster than Core i7-1065.

Level of Graphics

Replacing the Product Line Suffix, this gives us a rough indication of the processor graphics’ performance level.

  • G7 : Intel Iris Plus Graphics with 64 Execution Units
  • G4 : Intel Iris Plus Graphics with 48 Execution Units
  • G1 : Intel UHD Graphics with 32 Execution Units

Intel started using this graphics indicator in the 10th Gen Intel Core processor number system, because this will be a major model differentiator.

For example, they announced three Intel Core i5-1035 models, differentiated only by their processor graphics :

  • Intel Core i5-1035G7 : Intel Iris Pro Graphics (64 EUs)
  • Intel Core i5-1035G4 : Intel Iris Pro Graphics (48 EUs)
  • Intel Core i5-1035G1 : Intel UHD Graphics (32 EUs)

Recommended : 10th Gen Intel Ice Lake Mobile CPU Features + Specifications!

The 10th Gen Intel Core Processor Number Guide!

The 10th Gen Intel Core processor family, now consists of Ice Lake and Comet Lake processors, each with a new and different processor number system.

Let’s take a look at the two new 10th Gen Intel Core processor number systems, and figure out what the letters and numbers mean!

10th Gen Intel Core Processor Primer

The 10th Gen Intel Core processor family, confusingly, consists of two distinctly different and separate processor lines.

10th Gen Intel Ice Lake

The 10th Gen Intel Ice Lake processors are the first to be purpose-built for AI applications, with features like :

  • Intel Deep Learning Boost – a new, dedicated instruction set for hardware acceleration of neural networks, which will boost applications like automatic image enhancements, photo indexing and photorealistic effects.
  • GPU Engine Compute – developers can use the GPU, which provides up to 1 teraflops of compute capability, for high-throughput inference applications like video stylisation, analytics and real-time video resolution upscaling.
  • Intel Gaussian & Neural Accelerator (GNA) – a dedicated hardware engine for background workloads like voice processing and noise suppression at ultra-low power.

10th Gen Intel Comet Lake

The 10th Gen Intel Comet Lake processors, on the other hand, are an evolution of the last-generation Whiskey Lake processors.

They use the old 14 nm process technology, with these improvements or features :

  • Up to 16% better performance than the last-generation Intel Whiskey Lake processors, never mind 2014 dinosaurs
  • Intel Adaptix technologies – a set of tools that will help Intel’s OEM partners tune their laptop designs for 8% to 12% better performance
  • Support for faster memory – up to DDR4-2666
  • Support for Intel Wi-Fi 6 (Gig+) and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity

The 10th Gen Intel Core Processor Number System(s)

Even though they are both part of the same 10th Gen Intel Core processor family, the Ice Lake and Comet Lake processors have different processor number systems.

It’s as if they have two different departments who do not communicate with each other… but I digress. Let’s take a look at their processor number systems, separately.

10th Gen Intel Ice Lake Processor Number System

Here is the processor number system for the 10th Gen Intel Ice Lake processors

Brand Modifier

This is what most people think of as the performance category.

  • Core i7 : enthusiast class, with many processing cores
  • Core i5 : mainstream processors
  • Core i3 : entry-level processors

Gen Indicator

This is now a 2-digit number 10 for the 10th Generation Intel Core processor.

SKU Numeric Digits

This is what we consumers use as a rough indicator of the processor’s overall performance.

Instead of three digits that Comet Lake uses, it now uses just two digits, but the concept is the same – the higher the number, the better the processor’s performance in general.

L2 Streaming Prefetch from The Tech ARP BIOS Guide

L2 Streaming Prefetch

Common Options : Enabled, Disabled

Quick Review of L2 Streaming Prefetch

Intel Core processors have a hardware streaming prefetch mechanism that automatically fetches an extra 64-byte cache line whenever the processor requests for a 64-byte cache line. This reduces cache latency by making the next cache line immediately available if the processor requires it as well.

When enabled, the processor will retrieve the currently requested cache line, as well as the subsequent cache line.

When disabled, the processor will only retrieve the currently requested cache line.

In a desktop system, enabling this feature improves performance as there’s a high probability of the processor requiring the next cache line as well as the currently requested cache line. It is therefore recommended that you enable the L2 Streaming Prefetch BIOS feature in a desktop system.

But in a server, the probability of the next cache line being required by the processor is lower than that of a desktop system. The higher cache miss ratio inevitably leads to higher bus utilization, which reduces the processor’s performance.

You will need to evaluate the performance effect of L2 Streaming Prefetch on your server and determine if it should be disabled or enabled for better performance. But servers should generally disable this feature.

Details of L2 Streaming Prefetch

L2 Streaming Prefetch is a BIOS feature specific to processors based on the Intel Core microarchitecture.

These processors have a hardware streaming prefetch mechanism that automatically fetches an extra 64-byte cache line whenever the processor requests for a 64-byte cache line. To be more specific, the adjacent cache line prefetch mechanism automatically fetches the adjacent cache line, essentially delivering 128-bytes to the processor, even if the processor does not request for the subsequent cache line.

This reduces cache latency by making the next cache line immediately available if the processor requires it as well. However, this increases bus traffic and can actually reduce performance if the processor does not actually require the second cache line. So, it is a double-edge sword.

[adrotate group=”1″]

But in a server, this feature may actually degrade performance since data requests in servers are of a more random nature. The probability of the next cache line being required by the processor is lower than that of a desktop system.

The higher cache miss ratio inevitably leads to higher bus utilization, no thanks to the fact that the processor prefetches an extra 64-byte cache line everytime it retrieves a single cache line. This increased bus utilitization reduces the processor’s performance.

You will need to evaluate the performance effect of L2 Streaming Prefetch on your server and determine if it should be disabled or enabled for better performance. But servers should generally disable this feature.

Spontaneous Reboots With Spectre 2 Patches Updated!

On 11 January 2018, the WSJ reported that Intel was quietly asking their cloud computing customers to hold off installing Meltdown and Spectre patches because “the patches have bugs of their own“. Specifically, there were three bugs in the microcode patches they released.

In a blog post posted on the same day, Intel Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Intel Data Center Group, Navin Shenoy confirmed that Intel received reports of “higher system reboots” after applying those updates.

Basically, these systems would randomly and spontaneously reboot after installing those patches. Not something you want your computer to do, never mind servers that cater to tens or hundreds of thousands of users.

He initially confirmed that the affected systems were running Intel Broadwell and Intel Haswell CPUs, and that the issues affected both client (desktop, mobile, workstation) PCs, as well as data center servers.

But in an update a week later, Navin revealed that the newer Kaby Lake and Skylake CPUs, as well as older Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge processors, were also experiencing spontaneous reboot issues after updating their firmware.

Although not explicitly mentioned, the latest Intel Coffee Lake CPUs are also affected by spontaneous reboots. Hidden in their microcode revision guidance was a reference to the Coffee Lake-S processors.

In their 24 January 2018 microcode revision guidance, they further added the Intel Xeon Scalable and Intel Xeon W processor families to the list of affected CPUs.

But there’s good news – on 8 February 2018, Intel confirmed that 80 CPU models previously marked as affected have been certified to be free from the buggy microcode updates.

On 12 February 2018, Intel released beta microcode updates for some of their Coffee LakeBroadwell and Haswell processors, and pre-beta updates for their Arrandale, Clarkdale and Gulftown processors.

On 20 February 2018, Intel released production microcode updates for their Coffee Lake, Kaby Lake and Skylake processors, with new beta microcode updates for their Haswell, Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge processors.

On 26 February 2018, Intel released production microcode updates for the remaining Broadwell and Haswell processors, except for their Broadwell EX and Haswell EX (server) processors.

On 1 March 2018, Intel released new beta microcode updates for their Arrandale, ClarkdaleGulftown, Nehalem EP, Nehalem WS, Westmere EP, Westmere WS and Ivy Bridge EX (server) processors. They also started releasing pre-beta updates for their Lynnfield and Westmere EX processors. With the release of the Skylake Xeon E3 production update, the entire Intel Skylake family is fully patched.

Intel is not the first to be beset by problems in the rush to patch Meltdown and Spectre. Microsoft recently admitted that some Windows 10 updates were bricking some AMD PCs.

The Root Cause – Intel Spectre 2 Patches

On 22 January 2018, Navin Shenoy announced that Intel :

  • has identified the root cause for Broadwell and Haswell platforms, and
  • is making good progress in developing a solution to address that root cause.

They revealed that the spontaneous reboot issues seen with the affected Intel CPUs were caused by Spectre 2 mitigations in those microcode updates.

Notably, Intel only confirmed that Spectre 2 mitigations were the root cause in those two platforms. They have not confirmed Spectre 2 mitigations as the cause in the Coffee LakeKaby Lake, Skylake, Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge platforms that are also affected.

In fact, Intel shared that “The progress we have made in identifying a root cause for Haswell and Broadwell will help us address issues on other platforms. Please be assured we are working quickly to address these issues.

What CPUs Are Affected By The Buggy Intel Spectre 2 Patches?

All of the systems suffering from spontaneous reboot issues were running on HaswellBroadwellSkylake, Kaby Lake and the latest Coffee Lake CPUs. Workstation and server CPUs based on Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge were also affected, but thankfully not their desktop brethren.

On 8 February 2018, Intel revealed that some of the microcode updates that they suspected were buggy, were actually not buggy. They include :

  • The Intel Skylake H/S/U/Y Desktop Processors
  • The Intel Xeon E3-1200 v5 Processor Family (Skylake)

We prepared the full list of CPUs affected by the buggy Intel Spectre 2 patches, but it is a VERY LONG LIST with 801 CPUs, so we split them into three sections.

As you can see, many more server and workstation CPUs are affected than desktop and mobile CPUs combined. That’s because Intel prioritised the patching of their server and workstation CPUs, over desktop and mobile CPUs.

What Is Being Done About The Buggy Intel Spectre 2 Patches?

When he first posted on the spontaneous reboot issue, Navin said that Intel was working to “understand, diagnose and address this reboot issue“.

In his latest update, he shared that Intel had already issued an early version of the new microcode updates to their partners for tests, and will release them “once that testing has been completed“.

These new microcode updates basically have Spectre 2 mitigations removed. This will restore stability to the affected Intel CPUs, while Intel fixes the problems in those mitigations.

The Intel Spectre Microcode Update Schedule Updated!

On 7 February 2018, Navin Shenoy announced that Intel has released “production microcode updates for several Skylake-based platforms” to their OEM customers and industry partners, with more platform updates “in coming days“.

The schedule was updated on 12, 20, 26 February and 1 March with more details, including production (final), pre-beta and beta versions of the new Intel Spectre microcode updates.

What Should YOU Do?

While Intel initially advised end-users to “apply updates” from system and operating system providers, they have now changed their guidance, as of 22 January 2018 :

  • We recommend that OEMs, Cloud service providers, system manufacturers, software vendors and end users stop deployment of current versions on the below platforms, as they may introduce higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behavior.
  • We also ask that our industry partners focus efforts on testing early versions of the updated solution for Broadwell and Haswell we started rolling out this weekend, so we can accelerate its release. We expect to share more details on timing later this week.
  • For those concerned about system stability while we finalize the updated solutions, we are also working with our OEM partners on the option to utilize a previous version of microcode that does not display these issues, but removes the Variant 2 (Spectre) mitigations. This would be delivered via a BIOS update, and would not impact mitigations for Variant 1 (Spectre) and Variant 3 (Meltdown).

Please note that there has been no actual recorded threat or attack using the Meltdown or Spectre exploits. The damage, or risk of damage, every time your system or server spontaneously reboot is FAR WORSE than the (currently) non-existent threat of a Meltdown or Spectre exploit.

Therefore, we recommend that you DO NOT apply any microcode update for your Intel system, if you are using any Intel processor manufactured since 2011.

If you have already applied the latest Intel Spectre microcode update, and are affected by spontaneous reboots; you should upgrade to the new firmware (if they are available), or revert to the older firmware.

The Intel Coffee Lake Processors

Codenamed Coffee Lake, the 8th Generation Intel Core processors are the first Intel processors in years to command great interest. Why? Because they will all boast two additional processor cores, finally delivering the big performance boost we have been waiting for.

With Intel Coffee Lake, Intel is changing the number of cores in the Core i7, Core i5 and Core i3 processor families :

Intel Core i7 : 4 cores, 8 threads -> 6 cores, 12 threads

Intel Core i5 : 4 cores, 4 threads -> 6 cores, 6 threads

Intel Core i3 : 2 cores, 4 threads -> 4 cores, 4 threads

The first slew of Intel Coffee Lake processors to hit the market are the Core i7-8700K, the Core i7-8700, the Core i5-8600K, the Core i5-8400, the Core i3-8350K, the Core i3-8300 and the Core i3-8100.

Intel will also launch three Pentium models based on Coffee Lake – the Pentium G4720, the Pentium G4700 and the Pentium G4660. They will be priced at less than US$100 MSRP.

The Intel Coffee Lake Processor Specifications

Here is a table comparing the key specifications of the Intel Coffee Lake processors :

Worldwide Price & Availability

Intel will officially make the 8th Generation Intel Core desktop processors available on 5 October 2017. We confirmed this date through multiple sources. If you are checking for the availability of these processors online to pre-order, here are their part numbers :

Intel Core i7-8700K : BX80684I78700K

Intel Core i7-8700 : BX80684I78700

Intel Core i5-8600K : BX80684I58600K

Intel Core i5-8400 : BX80684I58400

Intel Core i3-3850K : BX80684I38350K

Intel Core i3-8100 : BX80684I38100

Most of the processors will be priced at the same price points as the preceding 7th Generation Core processor models. Intel will only hike the prices of the K-grade models of the Core i7 and Core i5 families.

Intel Core i7 K-grade models : +$20 premium (gen on gen)

Intel Core i5 K-grade models : +$15 premium (gen on gen)

All other Core i7, i5 and i3 models : PRICE PARITY!

Intel just confirmed that our leaked information is correct. Check out the official prices for the Intel Coffee Lake processors (in 1K quantities) :

8th Gen Intel Core 7th Gen Intel Core Difference
Model Launch Price Model Launch Price
Core i7-8700K $359 Core i7-7700K $339 +$20
Core i7-8700 $303 Core i7-7700 $303
Core i5-8600K $257 Core i5-7600K $242 +$15
Core i5-8400 $182 Core i5-7400 $182
Core i3-8350K $168 Core i3-7350K $168
Core i3-8100 $117 Core i3-7100 $117

Of course, those are price premiums for 1K quantities. The final market price will be considerably more expensive, at least initially. IO-Tech, for example, leaked EU prices of the K-grade processors that show a considerable price premium on those parts :

Intel Core i7-8700K : €419 (+€95 premium)

Intel Core i5-8600K : €299 (+€75 premium)

Intel Core i3-8350K : €199 (+€50 premium)

Data Prefetch Logic – BIOS Optimization Guide

Data Prefetch Logic

Common Options : Enabled, Disabled

Quick Review

The processor has a hardware prefetcher that automatically analyzes its requirements and prefetches data and instructions from the memory into the Level 2 cache that are likely to be required in the near future. This reduces the latency associated with memory reads.

When enabled, the processor’s hardware prefetcher will be enabled and allowed to automatically prefetch data and code for the processor.

When disabled, the processor’s hardware prefetcher will be disabled.

It is recommended that you enable this BIOS feature so that the hardware prefetcher is enabled for maximum performance.

Details

This is a BIOS feature specific to processors based on the Intel Core microarchitecture (e.g. Intel Core i7, Core i5, Core i3).

These processors have a hardware prefetcher (officially known as the Data Prefetch Logic or DPL) that automatically analyzes the processor’s requirements and prefetches data and instructions from the memory into the Level 2 cache that are likely to be required in the near future.
