Taiwan Bans HUAWEI Smartphones Over Hurt Feelings :(

HUAWEI just can’t catch a break – Taiwan just banned three of their smartphonesover hurt feelings!

Find out what happened, and what this could mean for HUAWEI and the tumultuous Taiwan-China relationship.

Taiwan Bans HUAWEI Smartphones Over Hurt Feelings 🙁

On 14 November 2019, the Taiwanese National Communications Commission ordered Taiwanese companies to stop offering HUAWEI P30, HUAWEI P30 Pro and HUAWEI nova 5T smartphones for sale.

The reason? Because the Taiwanese government discovered that their software used “Taiwan, China” for time zones and contacts.

This mistake is offensive to Taiwanese government because it implied that Taiwan is part of China, and not a separate country – a sovereignty dispute that has existed since the Communists took over mainland China.

According to Peter Niou, a deputy director at Taiwanese National Communications Commission, the reference impaired Taiwan’s national dignity, and would continue until HUAWEI changed the incorrect reference to Taiwan.

It was reported by the Economic Daily News that this reference to Taiwan, China only appeared recently, after a software update.

Didn’t China Do The Same Thing?

Indeed, China is no stranger to banning companies over this sovereignty dispute. Here is a short list of companies they ban-hammered over similar slights :

Marriott : For listing Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan as independent countries in a survey

Versace : For releasing t-shirts that identified Hong Kong and Macau as independent countries.

Gap : For selling a t-shirt that featured a map of China without Taiwan.

Christian Dior : For using a map of China without Taiwan in a presentation.

Zara : For listing Taiwan as an independent country on its website.

Delta Airlines : For listing Taiwan and Tibet as independent countries.

What Does The HUAWEI Ban Mean For Taiwan – China Relations?

While it may sound like a big shock, this new ban by the Taiwanese government on HUAWEI smartphones is very measured in nature.

The Taiwanese government only banned the three affected models, instead of a blanket ban on HUAWEI, which is something China would have done if the situation was reversed.

They even explicitly stated that the ban would be lifted as soon as the mistake was corrected.

It is also important to note that even as the Trump Administration has been pressuring the Taiwanese government to freeze the sale of semiconductor chips to China, they have not done so.

In fact, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) said earlier this month that it would continue producing chips for HUAWEI.

Therefore, it is doubtful that China would chime in on this issue. That said, it would not be politically-viable for HUAWEI to issue a correction right away.

We think they will let this issue blow over, before quietly releasing an update to change the reference.

Forbes Is SHOCKED That HUAWEI P30 Pro Got New Colours!

Forbes just published an incredibly funny piece about the HUAWEI P30 Pro at IFA 2019!

They were SHOCKED that HUAWEI released two new colours for the P30 Pro, dramatically claiming that they were “redesigned” devices that “cleverly skirted” the Trump ban.

So drama. Cue major eye roll by every tech journalist or pundit worthy of the name. LOL!

The Dumbing Down Of Forbes

It is interesting how Forbes has evolved from a staid but serious business publication, into a “hip and trendy” publication that attempts to redefine creative writing as news.

They actually turned a simple report about HUAWEI coming out with two new colours for their P30 Pro smartphones into a dramatic piece of creative writing about how HUAWEI “cleverly skirted” and “circumvented” the Trump ban.

Forbes Is SHOCKED That HUAWEI P30 Pro Got New Colours!

Let’s take a look at how SHOCKED Forbes was about the HUAWEI P30 Pro getting new colours, and show you why they are either :

a) completely ignorant about mobile technology and the smartphone business, or
b) writing a fallacious piece for money (probably hoping it would go viral)

Either way, it’s shocking that Forbes actually published such a nonsensical piece.

Forbes Claim #1 : The New HUAWEI P30 Pro Circumvents US Ban

Forbes started with a dramatic title, claiming that what HUAWEI did circumvented the US ban.

IFA 2019: Huawei Confirms Shock New Android 10 Smartphones, Circumventing U.S. Ban

How does the new HUAWEI P30 Pro CIRCUMVENT the US ban, Forbes???

Anyone who actually bothered to read up on the Trump ban would know that the US Commerce Department issued a Temporary General Licence to HUAWEI, that was recently extended by another 90 days.

That temporary licence indubitably allows HUAWEI to ship the P30 Pro smartphones with the new Android 10 operating system.

Recommended : CONFIRMED : HUAWEI Licence Extended By 90 Days!

Forbes Claim #2 : It’s Shocking News!

After noting that HUAWEI unveiled new versions of P30 Pro with Android 10 pre-installed, Forbes stated that,

This, of course, came as shocking news knowing that the Chinese telecommunications giant is under a strict U.S. ban which bars American companies including Google, Qualcomm, Microsoft and Intel to do business with it as well as foreign companies which products contain 25% or more of U.S.-originated technologies or materials.

How is that shocking at all, Forbes???

The only shocking thing is that you appear not to be aware that HUAWEI is legally entitled to ship their P30 Pro smartphones with the latest version of Android.

The temporary licence explicitly allows American companies to “provide service and support, including software updates or patches, to existing Huawei handsets that were available to the public on or before May 16, 2019.

Forbes Claim #3 & #4 : It’s An Astucious WorkaroundThe New P30 Pro Is A Refresh

In the very next paragraph, they claimed it was a workaround with a really fancy word – astucious :

However, Huawei found an astucious workaround: The new P30 Pro smartphones are essentially a refresh of the devices that were initially launched in Paris earlier this spring.

REALLY? A workaround, Forbes?

Seriously, it is unquestionably NOT a workaround if they just introduced two new colours of the SAME P30 Pro smartphone!

Introducing new colours of existing smartphone models is actually a pretty common practice, as it generates (free) publicity and drive new sales.

Recommended : US Tech Companies Pressure Trump On Lifting HUAWEI Ban!

[adrotate group=”1″]

And how is this a REFRESH, Forbes?

The only thing they did was introduce two new two-tone colour finishes for the SAME P30 Pro smartphones that you admitted launched in Paris earlier in the spring.

Think about it for a moment… If Toyota offers two new colour options for their Camry sedans a few months after launching them with five colour options, would you call that a refreshed model?

HUAWEI themselves pointed this out when they showed this slide at IFA 2019 after announcing the new Misty Lavender and Mystic Blue colour options :

As you can see, the two new colours join the existing five colour options for the HUAWEI P30 Series. They are all one, big, happy family, Forbes… ONE family, not two.

2019-08-19 : The US Commerce Department extended HUAWEI’s temporary general licence by a further 90 days. They also added 46 more HUAWEI affiliates to the Entity List. Read our full report and analysis!

Who Does The HUAWEI Trump Ban Affect?

The HUAWEI Trump ban covers both HUAWEI and its sub-brand, HONOR. As it so happens, HONOR is launching their HONOR 20 smartphone today.

Together with the success of their P30 and P30 Pro smartphones, the ban could not come at a worst time.

What Exactly Does The HUAWEI Trump Ban Do?

Many pundits wrongly quoted Trump’s executive order as the basis for the Google and other US companies suspending supplies to HUAWEI. That is only partly true.

His executive order does not mention HUAWEI at all. In fact, it actually applies to every company listed in the US Entity List, which is over 270 pages long!

It basically prohibits “any acquisition, importation, transfer, installation, dealing in, or use of any information and communications technology or service (transaction)” by “any person… subject to the jurisdiction of the United States” to “persons owned by, controlled by, or subject to the jurisdiction or direction of a foreign adversary“.

It was really the US Commerce Department’s action of adding HUAWEI (and its 68 affiliates) to the Entity List that forced US companies to stop doing business with HUAWEI.

Even without Trump’s executive order, US companies are generally prohibited from doing business with companies listed in the Entity List. They will have to apply for a licence to export products to those entities.

The HUAWEI Trump Ban Effects

Google

Google rescinded HUAWEI’s Android licence, as well as access to Google Play services and the Play Store. But what does that mean?

  • Current HUAWEI and HONOR devices that run on Android and were launched on, or before 16 May 2019 will continue to have access to Google Play services, and the Google Play Store..
  • HUAWEI and HONOR devices launched from 17 May 2019 onwards will not have access to Android, Google Play services, or Google Play Store.

  • HUAWEI and HONOR will continue to receive Android software updates and patches until 19 August 2019.

In other words, if you own a HUAWEI or HONOR smartphone that was launched before 16 May 2019, you have nothing to worry about… at least until August 2019.

ARM

The suspension of business between ARM and HUAWEI has no real effect in the short to medium-term, because HUAWEI can continue to manufacture existing and completed designs.

Read our full report : The HUAWEI ARM Business Suspension – How Bad Is This?

Processor Suppliers : Intel, Qualcomm, Broadcom

HUAWEI has long worked on creating their own mobile SoCs, like their flagship-class Kirin 970 and Kirin 980. They have been pretty successful in this regard – all of their top smartphones run on Kirin processors.

They do not have a replacement for the Intel processors that power their MateBook laptops. However, they have apparently prepared for this eventuality by stockpiling 3 months worth of chips.

Memory Suppliers : Micron, Infineon

Fortunately for HUAWEI, most DRAM manufacturers are not US companies, or subject to US law. Whereas Micron (a US company) can no longer supply HUAWEI with memory chips, there are other DRAM companies that can make up the shortfall… including their competitor, Samsung.

Tech Organisations : WiFi, Bluetooth, SD New!

Initially, HUAWEI was quietly but unceremoniously booted from the Wi-Fi Alliance, the Bluetooth SIG and the SD Association. But two weeks later, their memberships were quietly restored. Read our full reports :

Perplexingly, the IEEE announced and retracted their ban on HUAWEI scientists and engineers serving as peer reviewers and editors in just four days.

Read our full report : The IEEE Reverses HUAWEI Ban After Just 4 Days!

How Does The HUAWEI Trump Ban Affect YOU?

If you own a HUAWEI or HONOR smartphone sold on or before 16 May 2019, you have NOTHING to worry about.

  • Your HUAWEI or HONOR smartphone will continue to work normally
  • You will continue to have access to Google Play services, and the Google Play Store.
  • You will continue to receive updates and security patches

If you are planning to purchase a future HUAWEI or HONOR smartphone, you should wait and see.

  • Despite the ban, HUAWEI still has access to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).
  • They can still produce smartphones that run on Android, but won’t be able to install Google Play services, the Google Play Store, or apps by US companies like YouTube and Facebook.
  • HUAWEI has been working on its own mobile operating system, HongMeng OS, which is said to be undergoing trials right now.
  • Future HUAWEI smartphones may run on HongMeng OS and their own slew of apps, but there will be a dearth of third-party apps, at least initially.
  • If the ban persists, HUAWEI will likely be forced to ship future smartphones with stock Android and HUAWEI apps to replace Google Play services.

What About New Devices?

The partial licence from the US Commerce Department only permits “service and support” for “existing” devices that were “available to the public on or before May 16, 2019“.

HUAWEI and its affiliates can create and sell new devices. However, they will not be covered by the temporary licence, and therefore…

  • they cannot have Google Play services or Play Store, or any US apps like YouTube and Instagram, installed
  • they are not entitled to Android software updates either

That said, US companies or companies that use substantial US technologies can apply to the US Commerce Department for special licences to sell to HUAWEI. As of July 2019, over 50 applications were submitted for consideration.

How Will This Affect HUAWEI’s Business?

This is, no doubt, a really serious problem for HUAWEI. Losing the ability to include Google services will be detrimental to the success of future devices.

The disruption of their supply chain will start to bite if the ban persists beyond three months – that’s when their stockpile runs out. They will also lose the ability to support existing customers with software patches.

However, the issuance of the temporary licence, just days after listing HUAWEI as a foreign adversary and a national security threat, signals that the HUAWEI Trump ban is just another bargaining chip in the US-China trade war.

In all likelihood, Trump is using the HUAWEI ban to force China to accept his terms for a trade deal. He badly needs a face-saving win after numerous failures in recent months.

Why This Is Bad For The Global Economy + Security

President Trump’s persistent pressure on HUAWEI is forcing a decoupling of the Chinese and American economies. This is bad for the global economy, as well as global security.

The intertwining of US and Chinese economies is a form of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) that was once guaranteed by nuclear weapons.

But with an erratic US President cutting off supply to US products and technology essential for their companies, China will continue to turn inwards to insulate their economy, even adopting a form of economic Juche.

The more their economies decouple, the more the US loses the ability to engage China positively on a variety of geopolitical issues. In fact, it may eventually lead to an outright Cold War between the US and China, if not military confrontation.

No Worries Experience With Extended Warranty!

The price cuts will definitely excite HUAWEI fans, and make the amazing HUAWEI P30 smartphones more affordable. But what about the extended warranty?

Many smartphone users often forget about the importance of warranty until, well, long after they purchase their devices.

Nothing Usually Happens In The First Year

Most users will agree that nothing usually happens in the first year, so no one really makes use of the usual 12-month warranty.

By extending the warranty for another 12 months, HUAWEI is basically offering 24 months of No Worries experience!

Repairs + Replacements Are Not Cheap!

Because smartphones are so powerful and sophisticated, they are very expensive to repair. Even if HUAWEI offers free repair services, the replacement parts can be prohibitively expensive.

With the extended warranty, you can get your HUAWEI smartphone repaired at no cost for two years. It sure beats paying for repairs, or worse, buying a new replacement phone!

Don’t Forget Minor Fixes!

Some people live with minor issues (like a hard-to-use Power button) that cropped up after their warranty expires, because it’s just not worth switching to a new smartphone.

With the extended warranty, you need not live with such inconveniences – just send in your HUAWEI smartphone for a free check-up and service or repair!

HUAWEI Sold 10 MILLION P30 Smartphones In 85 Days!

HUAWEI recently announced two spectacular achievements – selling 10 MILLION P30 series smartphones, and 100 MILLION smartphones in total! Here is the full story!

HUAWEI Sold 10 MILLION P30 Series Smartphones In 85 Days!

Despite President Donald Trump’s best efforts, HUAWEI beat expectations by selling a whopping 10 MILLION P30 series smartphones in just 85 days!

That means HUAWEI sold 117,647 P30 smartphones every day; or 4,900 every hour; or 82 every minute!

To put that in perspective, it took them 62 days long – 147 days – to sell 10 million units of the P20 series smartphones last year.

This was undoubtedly due to the amazing photographic capabilities of the HUAWEI P30 series smartphones, as we detailed in these articles :

HUAWEI Sold 100 MILLION Smartphones In 5 Months!

On top of that, Kevin Ho, President of Handset Product Line of HUAWEI Consumer Business Group also announced that they sold 100 million smartphones by 30 May 2019.

While he did not reveal how many smartphones HUAWEI sold in 2018, he shared that it took them longer to hit the 100 million unit volume in 2018.

Now that Trump lifted his HUAWEI ban, it looks like HUAWEI will have no problem selling 200 million smartphones by end of 2019!

HUAWEI Calls FedEx Repeated Delivery Failures A Vendetta!

After the latest FedEx refusal to deliver a HUAWEI P30 Pro smartphone, HUAWEI finally hit back, calling it a vendetta. Here’s the latest update on the ongoing HUAWEI-FedEx saga…

The HUAWEI – FedEx Vendetta Claim Explained

Right after the HUAWEI Trump ban kicked off, FedEx diverted two HUAWEI packages and attempted to divert two other packages.

The first two packages were sent on May 19 and May 20 from Japan. Instead of being delivered to HUAWEI in China, FedEx diverted them to their HQ in Memphis, Tennessee, on May 23.

FedEx claimed it was an error by a 30-year old employee who sent the packages to the FedEx HQ for a “compliance audit“.

The other two packages were sent from Hanoi on May 17. Destined for HUAWEI offices in Hong Kong and Singapore, they were held up at local FedEx offices on May 21 for “delivery exception”.

Then, a few days ago, FedEx refused to deliver a HUAWEI P30 Pro smartphone to a US resident, citing the Trump ban.

They later changed their story, claiming it was an “operational mistake“, even though they had earlier confirmed they intentionally withheld and returned the smartphone because of “US GOVERNMENT ISSUE WITH HUAWEI AND CHINA GOVERNMENT

HUAWEI : FedEx Has A Vendetta!

It comes as no surprise then, when HUAWEI tweeted that FedEx has a vendetta against them :

Oddly enough, they mentioned FedEx’s rival – UPS – in their tweet. It was probably a reference to UPS’ tweet that,

“There is nothing prohibiting shipping a Huawei phone from the U.K. to the U.S.”

FedEx finally adopted the same stance the next day, stating that,

“FedEx can accept and transport all Huawei products except for any shipments to listed Huawei entities on the U.S. Entity List.”

As we pointed out earlier, FedEx is only legally required not to knowingly ship technology to HUAWEI and its 68 affiliates listed on the US Entity List.

While we do not believe that FedEx actually has a vendetta against HUAWEI, their explicit refusal to ship that HUAWEI P30 Pro shows gross neglect by their management to properly address the HUAWEI Trump ban.

With not one, not two, but three delivery failures and the PR faux pas on Twitter, you have to wonder – what on Earth is going on at FedEx?

FedEx Reverses HUAWEI Ban, Calls It “Operational Error”

FedEx just reversed their refusal to deliver HUAWEI products based on the HUAWEI Trump ban, calling it an “operational error“.

They also clarified their policy on HUAWEI and its 68 affiliates who are on the US Entity List. Here are the full details!

What FedEx Ban On HUAWEI?

FedEx never officially stated its stance on the HUAWEI Trump ban, until a PCMag journalist tried to send a HUAWEI P30 smartphone to his US colleague.

It was held for a few hours in the US and then promptly returned, with the following message :

“PARCEL RETURNED BY FEDEX, DUE US GOVERNMENT ISSUE WITH HUAWEI AND CHINA GOVERNMENT”

Photo credit : Sascha Segan, PCMag

When they queried FedEx about their refusal to deliver the P30 smartphone, they received this reply,

“[O]n May 16, 2019, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. and 68 of its global affiliates were included on the ‘Entity List’ which sets out a list of certain entities that US companies are restricted from doing business with. My apologies for the inconvenience this has caused you.”

Followed by this subsequent response :

[T]o ensure our compliance, at this time we are not accepting any shipments to any of the listed Huawei entities.”

You can read the full story, and our assessment of this FedEx delivery ban of HUAWEI and its affiliates, in our article – FedEx Refused To Deliver HUAWEI P30 Due To Trump Ban!

FedEx Reverses Stance, Calls It An Operational Error

A day later, FedEx reversed its stance, calling its earlier refusal to deliver the HUAWEI P30 smartphone an “operational error“.

“The package in question was mistakenly returned to the shipper, and we apologize for this operational error.

As a global company that moves 15 million shipments each day, we are committed to compliance with all rules and regulations and minimizing impact to our customers as we adjust our operations to comply with a dynamic US regulatory environment.”

The layperson’s translation would go something along these lines :

We finally realised we had no right to refuse the delivery, so it is now an “operational error”.

Please don’t blame us because we have to keep adjusting to US regulations that change on the whims of an unstable idiot.

Recommended : FedEx Refused To Deliver HUAWEI P30 Due To Trump Ban!

FedEx Clarifies Its HUAWEI Ban Policy

In our earlier article, we pointed out two salient points – the HUAWEI Trump ban is an EXPORT BAN, and PCMag is not on the US Entity List.

In other words, FedEx had no legal basis for refusing to deliver ANY HUAWEI device to any US resident.

On 23 June 2019, FedEx finally clarified its HUAWEI ban policy, stating that,

“FedEx can accept and transport all Huawei products except for any shipments to listed Huawei entities on the U.S. Entity List.”

Just as we pointed out earlier – FedEx is only legally required not to knowingly ship technology to HUAWEI and its 68 affiliates listed on the US Entity List.

This puts them on the same page as their rival, UPS, who confirmed in this earlier tweet :

“There is nothing prohibiting shipping a Huawei phone from the U.K. to the U.S.”

Finally, someone at FedEx read up on the fine print of the HUAWEI Trump ban! Congratulations!

FedEx Refused To Deliver HUAWEI P30 Due To Trump Ban!

FedEx just refused to deliver a HUAWEI P30 smartphone because of the HUAWEI Trump ban. But they picked the wrong target – PCMag.

Needless to say, this has resulted in a kerfuffle, or shall we say, covfefe?

Find out what happened, and why FedEx was totally wrong about refusing to deliver any HUAWEI smartphones because of the Trump ban.

FedEx Banned HUAWEI P30 Delivery Due To Trump Ban!

Sascha Segan of PCMag just reported that FedEx refused to deliver a HUAWEI P30 smartphone that his UK colleague, Adam Smith, mailed to him.

The reason? The notice on the returned parcel said, in rather bad grammar but clearly, that…

“PARCEL RETURNED BY FEDEX, DUE US GOVERNMENT ISSUE WITH HUAWEI AND CHINA GOVERNMENT”

Photo credit : Sascha Segan, PCMag

When Adam reached out to FedEx on Twitter, they replied,

“Adam, on May 16, 2019, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. and 68 of its global affiliates were included on the ‘Entity List’ which sets out a list of certain entities that US companies are restricted from doing business with. My apologies for the inconvenience this has caused you.”

With this subsequent response :

“Adam, it is my understanding that to ensure our compliance, at this time we are not accepting any shipments to any of the listed Huawei entities.”

HUAWEI spokeswoman Teri Daley, on the other hand, responded,

“This is a complete misinterpretation of the EO/EL” (Executive Order / Entity List).

So who is correct? FedEx or HUAWEI? First, a quick primer on what on the HUAWEI Trump ban

The HUAWEI Trump Ban

Does The HUAWEI Trump Ban Affect FedEx?

As a US company, they are prohibited from doing business with HUAWEI or its 68 affiliates listed in the Entity List.

The Trump Executive Order, on the other hand, specifically prohibits US companies from exporting technology to HUAWEI and its affiliates.

But unless they are knowingly delivering packages containing US technology to HUAWEI or its affiliates, they have no legal exposure to the HUAWEI Trump ban.

Why FedEx Was Wrong About The HUAWEI Trump Ban

FedEx was wrong not to deliver PCMag’s P30 smartphone for a few reasons :

Reason #1 : It Is An Export Ban

The Trump executive order only prohibits the EXPORT of technology to HUAWEI and its affiliates.

It does not prohibit anyone from importing HUAWEI smartphones into the United States. A fact their rival, UPS, confirmed in this tweet :

“There is nothing prohibiting shipping a Huawei phone from the U.K. to the U.S.”

Neither does it prohibit an existing owner of a HUAWEI smartphone from sending it to a US resident.

Reason #2 : PCMag Is Not In The Entity List

The HUAWEI P30 was sent by a third-party (PCMag), not HUAWEI. They have no legal basis to reject the delivery because PCMag is not in the Entity List.

Reason #3 : There Is A Temporary 90-Day Licence

The US Department of Commerce issued a temporary 90-day licence for the support and service of existing HUAWEI smartphones that were available on or before May 16, 2019.

The HUAWEI P30 launched in March, and is therefore covered under that 90-day licence.

HUAWEI Outsmarts SD + microSD Ban With NM Card! 2.0

HUAWEI has just been removed as a member of the SD Association, because of the Trump ban. But they got an ace up their sleeves this time – their NM Card format!

Find out how the HUAWEI NM Card format lets them bypass the SD and microSD ban, and what else HUAWEI can do moving forward!

Updated @ 2019-05-31 : The SD Association quietly restored HUAWEI as a member. Seriously.

Originally posted @ 2019-05-25

What SD + microSD Ban?

The HUAWEI Trump ban keeps expanding its reach. Even the international SD Association has been forced to remove HUAWEI as a member.

This prevents HUAWEI and HONOR from making and selling any products that use the SD standards. Effectively, all future HUAWEI and HONOR smartphones can no longer be manufactured with microSD support.

What About Current Smartphones?

Don’t worry! Your HUAWEI and HONOR smartphones will continue to work normally with microSD cards.

These actions by the US Department of Commerce and the SD Association only apply to HUAWEI and HONOR smartphones that have not been released by 15 May 2019 onwards.

Recommended Reading : The HUAWEI Trump Ban – Everything You Need To Know!

NM Card To The Rescue!

HUAWEI now seem absolutely prescient when they released their own NM Card format together with the HUAWEI Mate20 smartphones last year.

The NM Card, or the HUAWEI Nano Memory Card in full, is 45% smaller than the microSD card. Precisely designed to mimic the shape and size of a nano SIM card, it allows for a more compact hybrid SIM tray design.

But more importantly, in the context of the Trump ban, the NM Card is a HUAWEI standard, and not a SD Association standard.

What Are Their Options?

Option A : Switch To NM Card

Thanks to their foresight in creating the NM Card standard, HUAWEI can easily replace microSD card slots with NM Card slots in their future smartphones.

Now, to be certain, the NM Card is neither cheap nor ubiquitous. The only company making and selling them is HUAWEI.

Hence, they have so far been introduced only in their flagship smartphones, like the HUAWEI Mate20, HUAWEI Mate20 ProHUAWEI Mate20 X, HUAWEI P30 and HUAWEI P30 Pro smartphones.

We expect HUAWEI to continue this trend, perhaps introducing NM Card into their higher mid-range devices; while simultaneously cutting prices on NM Cards.

Option B : Skip microSD Card

Switching to NM Card will not work well for their mid-range and entry-level smartphones, because the greatest appeal of microSD cards is their low cost and ubiquity.

If the Trump ban does not get resolved soon, the best option would be to skip the microSD card slot entirely and just increase the internal storage of their mid-range and entry-level smartphones.

We have already seen this trend with some Android smartphones like the OPPO R17 Pro, the Xiaomi Mi A2, and the HONOR 10. Apple iPhones never had the option in the first place, and they are still selling well!

Recommended : HUAWEI Legal Motion Too Late, But China Has A Trump Card!

Why Did The SD Association Remove HUAWEI?

[adrotate group=”2″]

The problem isn’t really the SD Association per se. It is the fact that the SD licence is owned and enforced by a US company, SD-3C LLC.

When the Trump Administration added HUAWEI to the Entity List, SD-3C LLC is forced to stop their licensing arrangements with HUAWEI.

Because Micron is a part owner of SD-3C LLC, technology of US origin is also involved – the same issue that forced ARM to sever business ties with HUAWEI.

Recommended Reading : The HUAWEI ARM Business Suspension – How Bad Is This?

And HUAWEI Is Back In Again

Almost as quickly and quietly as the SD Association removed HUAWEI as a member, they restored HUAWEI’s membership around 29 May 2019.

There was no official explanation for both removing HUAWEI or restoring them, all in a matter of days.

The PRO Mode Photography Guide For HUAWEI P30 Series!

The HUAWEI P30 Series smartphones have a PRO Mode, which allows photographers to push the boundaries of creativity and possibilities.

This allows them to create photographs that are comparable to those from DSLR cameras!

Learn the PRO Mode tricks professional photographers use with the HUAWEI P30 Series smartphones, and check out some amazing examples of their work!

How To Activate PRO Mode For The HUAWEI P30 Series Smartphone

First, let us show you how to activate PRO Mode for the HUAWEI P30 Series smartphones.

  1. Turn on the camera app in the HUAWEI P30 or HUAWEI P30 Pro.
  2. Look for the camera mode options located just above the shutter button.
  3. Swipe left until you select the Pro option, as shown below.

The PRO Mode Options

After you select the PRO mode, you will see more options appear above it. These are photographic functions – ISO, S, EV, AF, AWB – that you can use to create really awesome photos.

PRO Mode Function #1 : ISO Sensitivity

ISO represents the light sensitivity of the camera. For example, we can select this function and increase the ISO sensitivity to increase the brightness of a photo, particularly when you take photos in poor lighting.

Increasing the ISO sensitivity will make the photo brighter in low-light, but there will be more noise. On the other hand, you can also lower the ISO in very bright conditions, which has the side effect of reducing noise.

PRO Mode Function #2 : Shutter Speed (S)

The Shutter Speed function determines whether we can capture fast-moving objects like a car or train.

The faster the shutter speed, the greater the ability to “freeze” their movement. Alternatively, you can lower the shutter speed to capture the light strobes of traffic flow.

PRO Mode Function #3 : Exposure (EV)

The Exposure (EV) function is useful in adjusting for adverse lighting conditions, like when the sunlight is just too bright. You can use this function to decrease the exposure so that your subjects look great even under the blazing sun!

PRO Mode Function #4 : Autofocus (AF)

The Autofocus function has three options – AF-S, AF-C and MF.

  • AF-S (Autofocus Single) : Best for photographing objects that do not move, like portraits or flowers. You can use it to lock focus on the subject, before adjusting your composition.
  • AF-C (Autofocus Continuous) : Useful for photographing a moving subject, like a dog or a car. After you lock focus on the moving subject, the camera will automatically adjust its focus as it moves towards or away from you.
  • MF (Manual Focus) : This may be useful for creative compositions where you want an off-focus effect.

PRO Mode Function #5 : Auto White Balance (AWB)

The PRO Mode includes a white balancing feature, with five options :

  • AWB (Auto White Balance) : This is the default option, which automatically adjusts for the ambient lighting condition.
  • Cloudy : This works better under overcast skies.
  • Fluorescent : This corrects for discolouration under fluorescent lighting, as well as mercury and sodium-vapour lamps.
  • Incandescent : This corrects for discolouration under incandescent lighting.
  • Direct Sunlight : This is best used when the subject is lit by direct sunlight.

PRO Mode Function #6 : Metering

The HUAWEI P30 Series smartphones have three metering options :

  • Spot metering : The camera will only measure the exposure of the centre (1-5%) of the image.
  • Center-weighted average metering : The exposure of the centre will be weighted more (60-80%) than the peripheral.
  • Multi-zone evaluative metering : This is the default option, which uses a variety of factors to automatically decide the best exposure for the photo.

Low Light Photography

You don’t need a tripod. Simply frame your shot, and press the shutter button to get your ideal photo in lowlight conditions!

Taking sunset shots has always been challenging, with the fear of losing details due to low light conditions.

However, the HUAWEI P30 Pro in its AI mode has helped me to achieve balanced shadows and highlights.

Low Light Photo Example #2

As I was on vacation in Bali, I stayed in Club Med which has Balinese architecture paired with natural elements like trees, lakes and grasslands.

This is actually a signature spot in the resort as all guests will have to walk past this stretch of rooms to reach their own.

One night, as I was walking back to the room after dinner, I realised that the night was exceptionally dark.

I knew that it was the perfect time to take a photo using the main 40MP sensor on the HUAWEI P30 Pro as it is using a new RYYB sensor, it can actually capture 40% more light than usual.

With the help of f1.6 aperture lens, I was confident that it will turn out amazing.

Well, I was right. This photo was taken with just a tap of the shutter button. No night mode or tripod needed. It’s simply mind blowing.

For the elements in the photo, I intentionally aligned the separation of real building and reflection to be 50% on top and 50% bottom to clearly show the difference and to fully expose the reflection on the lake’s surface.

And thanks to Huawei P30 Pro with its Ultra-Wide Lens and Superzoom function, I managed to capture a famous section of the building, as well as the iconic clock tower as my Superzoom target.

Super Zoom Photo Example #2

The Moroccan Pavilion, Putrajaya with an ultra-wide angle lens (top), 5X zoom (middle), and 50X zoom (bottom)

Did you know that there is a piece of Morocco in Malaysia? Tucked away in a corner of the Putrajaya Botanical Gardens lies the exquisite Moroccan Pavilion, Putrajaya known as Astaka Morocco.

The detailing leaves me in awe. This spectacular shot was achieved with the Ultra-Wide Mode on the HUAWEI P30 Pro.

The key to a clear and sharp photo is the lighting. Explore and catch a good frame with the best lighting, find your angle, and snap! Use these tips with the Ultra-Wide Mode, and nothing will go wrong!

Ultra-Wide Angle Photography

The ultra-wide angle lens of the HUAWEI P30 and P30 Pro smartphones greatly increase the sense of space, giving your landscape photos look more impressive!

Ultra-Wide Angle Photo Example

Club Med Bali has a beautiful pool deck with vibrant red umbrellas that captures the attention of all guests.

As I was having breakfast in the morning at around 9am, I noticed that the shadow casting on the ground looks very interesting and I knew it would make a great ultra-wide angle shot.

Since it was early, the area wasn’t filled with people yet. So, I quickly decided to use the HUAWEI P30 Pro to capture this scene using the ultra-wide angle lens.

This was the only shot I took as it looked great instantly. The sky was not over exposed, allowing clouds to appear clearly while the shadow areas are balanced nicely with details still intact.

I took this from the first floor of the building, hence I could cover more areas further back into the scene.

Super Macro Photography

The ultra-wide angle lens also has a very short focus distance, letting you get in as close as 2.5 cm for macro photography!

Adjust the zoom to 0.6X to enter the Ultra-Wide Angle Mode. When you get real close to the subject, the camera will automatically enter the Super Macro Mode. Easy peasy!

Super Macro Photo Example #1

These are the wings of Malaysia’s national butterfly, the Rajah Brooke’s birdwing butterfly. It is also the largest species in Malaysia.

Butterflies have some of the most stunning colours, lines and textures that are usually unseen by the human eye.

The super macro mode on the HUAWEI P30 Pro managed to help capture such details, where you can notice thousands of tiny scales responsible for the magnificent colour characteristics of butterflies.

It’ll be good to note that this was captured handheld without any assisting accessories!

Portrait Photography

The HUAWEI P30 Pro has a Time of Flight (TOF) camera that is used for portrait photography. It sends out pulses of near infra-red light to accurately map the subject and separate it from the background. This allows for a more accurate and natural bokeh effect.

Just select the Portrait mode, and make sure your subject is less than 2 metres away, for the ToF camera to work properly.

Portrait Photo Example #1

Shadowed areas are well enhanced on the portrait mode using the HUAWEI P30 Pro thanks to the AI mode which helps me capture great portrait shots when it detects a face.

I’m shocked that even under harsh sunlight, I can still capture the Pakcik’s face clearly even from a low angle shot.

This shot was taken earlier this month during Street Meet Johor, a photography event that gathers photographers and models that I organised.

I saw this event as an opportunity for me to test out the new HUAWEI P30 Pro to take some portrait shots and I wasn’t disappointed.

The trick for me is to ensure your portraits look as natural as it can be, you can adjust the Beauty Effect to lowest level possible to reduce the glowy effect.

Also, natural lighting is always the best choice.

Backlit Portrait Photography

The HUAWEI P30 and P30 Pro camera features the AI HDR+ technology, which uses AI algorithms to identify elements in the frame, like faces, buildings and the sun, to create an exposure map and intelligently apply it to minimise blown highlights while brightening shadows.

Just select the HDR mode, and wait for the focus on the subject to lock in, before shooting. It’s that simple!

How The P30 Leica Camera Rewrites The Rules Of Photography!

The new HUAWEI P30 and P30 Pro are more than just smartphones. They boast a new Leica camera that was designed specifically to “rewrite the rules of photographyIn this article, we will look at how the new P30 Leica camera delivers new heights of mobile photography!

How The P30 Leica Camera Rewrites The Rules Of Photography!

Here are the top five P30 Leica camera features that will rewrite the rules of mobile photography.

New RYYB Image Sensor

The new P30 Leica camera uses a new RYYB image sensor that collects 40% more light than traditional RGGB image sensors. This allows the HUAWEI P30 and P30 Pro to take photos even in near darkness.

Believe it or not, the picture below was taken by the HUAWEI P30 Pro in near darkness – just 1 lux of light!

SuperZoom Capability

The HUAWEI P30 Leica camera uses a new periscope telephoto lens design to deliver more optical zoom with optical image stabilisation.

  • HUAWEI P30 : 3X optical zoom5X hybrid zoom, 30X maximum zoom.
  • HUAWEI P30 Pro : 5X optical zoom, 10X hybrid zoom, 50X maximum zoom.

How useful is SuperZoom? Take a look at this 10X hybrid zoom sample of the Milan Cathedral.

Even though it was taken at night, you can clearly see not only the words, Mariae Nascenti; but also the intricate details of the stained glass and wall carvings.

SuperZoom also allows for easier wildlife photography. This shot, for example, was taken from a distance of 10 meters.

Both SuperZoom and the ultra-high resolution of the 40 MP main camera allows for great sports photography. You can capture the action from a distance, and “zoom in” even after taking the photo!

TOF Camera

The HUAWEI P30 Pro comes with a ToF (Time-of-Flight) camera which creates a 3D map of objects and their distances.

This allows the P30 Pro to accurately separate the subject from the background, for accurate retouching and background blurring. This sample demonstrates how the background is blurred with a natural bokeh effect without affecting the mother and her son.

AI HDR+ Technology

One of the most challenging photos to take is of a subject with a bright background. Even worse if the sun is in the back!

To address this, both HUAWEI P30 and P30 Pro use AI HDR+ to let the front or rear cameras take multiple photos in quick succession. They are then combined to eliminate overexposed and backlit images, bringing out the subject, without overblowing the bright background.

Ultra-Wide Angle + Macro

The .HUAWEI P30 and P30 Pro come with an ultra-wide camera that allows for both a wider perspective, and a Super Macro mode.

You Don’t Need The P30 Leica Camera To Join The NEXT Image Awards!

The capabilities of the new HUAWEI P30 Leica camera will make it easy for anyone to take great photos. In fact, you can show off your new photographic abilities at the NEXT Image Awards, and win the US$ 20,000 cash prize, and other great prizes!

The NEXT Image Awards is open to all HUAWEI smartphone users, with 6 conceptual categories :

HUAWEI P30 Pro SuperZoom Samples From Blue Concert!

The HUAWEI P30 Pro boasts an amazing 5X optical zoom, with up to 50X digital zoom. How good is it? Check out these P30 Pro SuperZoom shots from the recent Blue concert!

Find out why the P30 Pro SuperZoom capability is a killer feature!

Concert Photography Made Possible?

Everyone LOVES a good concert, and what better way to memorialise it than to take photos of your favourite singers belting it out LIVE?

The only problem? It’s quite impossible to take decent shots using any smartphone if you are seated at a distance from the stage. More so when the light show at concerts can wreak havoc with the colour, contrast and brightness of the photos!

All changes with the new HUAWEI P30 Pro smartphone!

Recommended : Three Key HUAWEI P30 Camera Features Revealed!

HUAWEI P30 Pro SuperZoom Samples From Blue Concert!

At the recent concert by British boyband Blue, a certain member of Team HUAWEI took a dozen shots using the new HUAWEI P30 Pro smartphone… from the back of the hall!

This is, as far as we know, the first trial of the HUAWEI P30 Pro camera in a concert setting. The photos were then cropped to compare the quality at three zoom ranges – Normal Shot, Close Shot, and Super Close Shot.

Although HUAWEI did not reveal the actual zoom ratio, we reckon Close Shot is using their 10X Hybrid Zoom, while Super Close Shot is using their 50X digital zoom.

Those HUAWEI P30 Pro camera samples are incredibly good. You can clearly see the Blue band members in the close shots.

Its super zoom capability not only allows you to take close-up shots of the band from across the hall, it lets you zoom past the crowd. No more ‘head shots”. No need to pay for expensive front row seats!

HUAWEI P30 Pro SuperZoom Camera Details

The HUAWEI P30 Pro features a new Leica quad-camera system, made up of :

  • a 40 MP main camera with a super-bright f/1.6 aperture,
  • 20 MP ultra-wide angle camera with f/2.2 aperture,
  • an 8 MP SuperZoom telephoto camera with f/2.4 aperture, and
  • a Time-of-Flight (ToF) camera.

The P30 Pro SuperZoom telephoto camera supports 5X optical zoom, 10X hybrid zoom and 50X digital zoom.

Richard Yu, CEO of HUAWEI Technologies Consumer Business Group, leaked the P30 Pro’s SuperZoom capability when he earlier released an image of the superman on his Weibo account.

The watermark suggests that this moon shot was taken with the HUAWEI P30 Pro, using its quad-lens Leica camera.

You may recall that last year’s HUAWEI P20 Pro introduced the world’s first triple-lens camera, with 3X zoom. The same ground-breaking Leica camera was also used in the HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro, allowing both smartphones to achieve a class-topping DxOMark score of 109 points!

The HUAWEI P30 Colour + Price + Deal Comparison!

The HUAWEI P30 launch was a shocker, with incredible launch prices and offers. Now, let’s take a look at the HUAWEI P30 colour options, and compare the local and global prices!

The Official HUAWEI P30 Tech Briefing

If you have not already seen it, here is the official HUAWEI P30 tech briefing by Clement Wong from HUAWEI Global Product Marketing.

The HUAWEI P30 Colour Comparison

Globally, there are five HUAWEI P30 colour options – Black, Pearl White, Aurora, Amber Sunrise and Breathing Crystal. However, not all colours are available in all countries, at least not initially.

At the HUAWEI P30 launch, we had the opportunity to check out the three P30 colour options available in Malaysia – Black, Breathing Crystal and Aurora.

Which colour do YOU prefer? 🙂

The HUAWEI P30 Price Comparison

Let’s compare the prices available globally, and see which country has the best prices!

HUAWEI P30 Model Europe United Kingdom Canada Australia Malaysia

6 GB + 128 GB € 799
~$898
£ 699
~$919
CAD 940

A$ 1,099
~$781

Right off the bat, we can see that Malaysia has the best prices by far. Prices here are generally between 23% and 26% LOWER than prices in other countries.

Malaysia is also the only country we know where the HUAWEI P30 is available with 8 GB of RAM!

[adrotate group=”2″]

Canadians have it pretty good too. Their prices are about 20% to 22% lower than prices in other countries.

Australians are not too far behind, with a nice 13% discount for the P30.

Here are some direct purchase or pre-order links :

The HUAWEI P30 Deal Comparison

Now, let’s compare the special pre-order or launch deals for the P30 smartphone!

Again, Malaysia stands out above the rest. Not only do Malaysian consumers get different freebies, the value of the freebies is also higher than the other countries.

And again, the Canadians and Australians also have it pretty good. The HUAWEI Watch GT (US | UK | MY) is, arguably, a better freebie than the Sonos One (US | UK | MY) smart speaker!

The HUAWEI P30 Pro vs HUAWEI P30 Comparison Guide!

Now that HUAWEI introduced the P30 Pro and the P30, you may be wondering – how different are they? To make it easy for you, we prepared this P30 Pro vs. P30 comparison guide!

HUAWEI P30 Pro vs P30 Comparison – Features

Display

The HUAWEI P30 Pro has a larger 6.47-inch curved OLED display. The P30, on the other hand, has a smaller 6.1-inch flat OLED display.

Because their display panels have the same display resolutions, this means the larger P30 Pro display has a slightly lower pixel density than the smaller P30 display.

Rear Cameras

The HUAWEI P30 Pro features a new Leica quad-camera system, made up of :

  • a 40 MP main camera with a super-bright f/1.6 aperture,
  • 20 MP ultra-wide angle camera with f/2.2 aperture,
  • an 8 MP SuperZoom telephoto camera with f/2.4 aperture, and
  • a Time-of-Flight (ToF) camera.

The P30 Pro’s SuperZoom telephoto camera supports 5X optical zoom, 10X hybrid zoom and 50X digital zoom.

Recommended : HUAWEI P30 Pro Super Zoom Preview @ Blue Concert!

The HUAWEI P30, on the other hand, has a Leica triple camera system, made up of :

  • a 40 MP main camera with f/1.8 aperture,
  • a 16 MP ultra-wide angle camera with f/2.2 aperture, and
  • an 8 MP telephoto camera with f/2.4 aperture.

Its telephoto camera supports 3X optical zoom, 5X hybrid zoom and 10X digital zoom.

ToF Camera vs Laser Auto-Focus

The P30 Pro has a Time of Flight (ToF) camera, which does not actually take any photos. It creates a 3D map of objects and their distances using pulses of invisible near infra-red light.

The P30 does not have the ToF camera, and uses a laser auto-focus system instead.

SuperSpectrum Sensor ISO Rating

Both models use the 1/1.7-inch 40 MP SuperSpectrum sensor, which uses a new RYYB filter to extend its ISO rating.

However, the P30 Pro supports up to ISO 409,600, while the P30 will only support up to ISO 204,800.

Acoustic Display Technology

This is a similar technology to Sony Acoustic Surface Audio, where actuators vibrate the display to produce sound.

Only the P30 Pro comes with this feature, replacing the lower speaker with the acoustic display. The P30 comes with two regular speakers.

SuperCool Technology

Both models will feature HUAWEI SuperCool technology to keep the Kirin 980 cool, even during long gaming sessions.

However, only the P30 Pro will use both graphene film and a heat pipe to quickly conduct and shift heat away from the CPU and GPU. The P30, on the other hand, will only use graphene film.

Storage

In certain countries, the P30 comes with just 64 GB of storage. The P30 is available in two other storage capacities – 128 GB and 256 GB.

The minimum storage capacity for the P30 Pro, on the other hand, is 128 GB, with options for 256 GB and 512 GB of storage.

Both models support additional storage via HUAWEI’s NM card, instead of microSD cards.

Recommended : The HUAWEI Mate X Foldable 5G Smartphone Preview!

Dust + Water Resistance

The P30 Pro is IP68-rated, which means it is sealed against dust and can be immersed in over 1 meter of water for at least 30 minutes.

The regular P30 is just splash-resistant, with an IP53 rating. It should withstand water sprayed on it (e.g. rain) for up to 5 minutes.

Battery + Recharging

The HUAWEI P30 Pro comes with a larger 4,200 mAh battery and supports 40 W SuperCharge 2.0, as well as 15 W Wireless QuickCharge.

The regular P30, on the other hand, has a 3,650 mAh battery and only supports 22.5 W SuperCharge. It does not support wireless charging.

Size + Weight

The P30 Pro is naturally larger and heavier than the P30. It is slightly wider by 2 mm and very slightly thicker by 0.8 mm, but almost 9 mm taller and weighs 27 grams more.

Three Key HUAWEI P30 Camera Features Revealed!

HUAWEI has been teasing us A LOT about the P30’s photography capabilities. Now, they just shared with us the three key HUAWEI P30 camera features! Let’s check them out!

What We Know About The HUAWEI P30 Camera

Here is what we know so far about the HUAWEI P30 camera :

  • The HUAWEI P30 Pro will have a quad-lens Leica camera
  • The HUAWEI P30 will have a triple-lens Leica camera
  • Both models will have Super Zoom capability, rumoured to offer up to 10X optical zoom

We can confirm that the HUAWEI P30 camera will have the Super Zoom capability. based on the three sets of Super Zoom photos leaked so far :

The Three Key HUAWEI P30 Camera Features

HUAWEI just shared with us details and teaser videos of these key HUAWEI P30 camera features!

Super Night Mode

The Super Night Mode teaser video shows how the HUAWEI P30 smartphone is able to capture the subject with just a minute glow from a firefly.

Insect rights aside, the video conveys that the HUAWEI P30 camera only requires a little light to capture the lady with great detail and accurate colours, even though the room is almost completely dark.

Super Zoom

We had already seen three sets of Super Zoom photos, but this teaser video reminds us that Super Zoom is also very useful for recording videos of faraway subjects.

Video recording will never be the same again with Super Zoom capability, especially if rumours of 10X optical zoom are true!

Dual View

This is new – the ability to record a video from two cameras at the same time! It’s like the Nokia Dual-Sight Bothie, but instead of recording from the front and rear cameras, Dual View records from two rear cameras.

The teaser video shows the creative possibility of combining two scenes – far and close – simultaneously. From what we can see, Dual View captures and combines video footage from the telephoto and main cameras.

Celebrities Leak Pre-Wedding Photos Taken By HUAWEI P30!

Malaysian celebrities and heartthrob couple, Fasha Sandha and Aidil Aziz, just leaked their pre-wedding photos. And believe it or not – they were taken with the HUAWEI P30 smartphone, which has not yet been launched!

Wedding Photography Is Changing

For decades, every posh wedding requires a retinue of photographers with large, heavy DSLRs. But times are changing. Couples are now opting for smartphones, which are handier and allow them to be part of the process.

The wedding photography today are definitely more creative, natural and spontaneous. There are more selfies, wefies, and video content. Best of all – they can all be shared with family and friends within seconds!

The image quality of smartphones have also improved drastically. This makes them truly indispensable at every important times of our lives.

These Pre-Wedding Photos Were Taken By HUAWEI P30!

Fasha Sandha and Aidil Aziz appear to believe so too. In their recent pre-wedding photoshoot, they apparently used the yet-to-be-released HUAWEI P30 smartphone. These five photos were leaked on her Instagram feed.

Here is what we think stands out from her posts :

  • She confirmed that they were taken by a HUAWEI P30 series smartphone.
  • The image quality is spectacular, with very good colour and contrast
  • The super close shots show incredible detail

It’s quite likely that her photographer was using the top-of-the-line HUAWEI P30 Pro, which is rumoured to boast an incredible 10X optical zoom capability!

But if her photographer was using the standard HUAWEI P30 model, then that would be even more incredible!

HUAWEI has shown a dogged interest in pushing the boundaries of mobile photography.

HUAWEI Backup May Be FREE!

[adrotate group=”2″]

We have just learned that HUAWEI may be giving away HUAWEI Backup – a 1 TB external hard disk drive storage solution that will manually or automatically backup data from your smartphone!

This will allow you to take as many photos as you wish with your HUAWEI P30 Pro, and never run out of storage!
