Ahead of its launch here in Southeast Asia, we have the leaked specifications and details of the HUAWEI nova 8i smartphone!

Upgraded Design!

HUAWEI nova 8i comes with 6.67-inch Edgeless Display, with a Full HD+ resolution, DCI-P3 colour gamut, and an impressive screen-to-body ratio of 94.7%.

The display features a 180 Hz touch sampling rate, and supports Eye Comfort Mode to filter out blue light.

The back of the nova 8i will offer “a delicate visual effect”, courtesy of the NCVM (non-conductive vacuum metallisation) process, together with a sleek 4D curved design.

It will be offered in three colour options – Moonlight Silver (seen below), Starry Black and Interstellar Blue.

Upgraded Photography!

The HUAWEI nova 8i will feature a circular camera module at the back, with four cameras :

  • 64 MP main camera (f/1.9)
  • 8 MP ultra-wide angle camera
  • 2 MP macro camera
  • 2 MP depth sensor (does not take photo / video)

It will support upgraded Super Night Shot 2.0 enhancements for superior image quality in low-light conditions.

The HUAWEI nova 8i is built around the Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 mobile platform, with a 6GB / 8GB memory configuration, and 128 GB of internal storage.

It will run on EMUI 11, which is based on Android 10. HUAWEI will introduce HarmonyOS later.

HUAWEI Malaysia : One Price Repair Deals (Limited Time)

For a limited time, HUAWEI Malaysia is offering everyone the opportunity to replace parts of their out-of-warranty devices at special all-in prices, which include both replacement parts and service fees.

The price for LCD screen replacement starts at RM99, while the back cover and mainboard replacements start at RM69 and RM159 respectively.

On top of that, if you are replacing your LCD screen or mainboard, you only need to top-up RM9 to replace the back cover!

These replacement parts will come with a 90-day warranty, starting from the day you collect your repaired device.

All you have to do is visit any HUAWEI Authorised Service Centre between 12 August 2020 until 1 October 2020.

HUAWEI nova 7 SE : Hands-On Experience!

The HUAWEI nova 7 SE 5G is designed to be an affordable 5G variant of the nova 7i that was launched earlier.

It is powered by the Kirin 820 5G platform, and runs on EMUI 10 with HMS. Our review unit comes with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB of internal storage.

On top of using a faster 5G-capable platform, the SE version comes with an upgraded 64 MP main camera, together with an 8 MP ultra-wide camera, a 2 MP macro camera, and a 2 MP depth sensor.

On the left side, you will find the SIM + NM card tray. This is a hybrid SIM tray, which supports two nano SIM cards, or one nano SIM card and one NM card.

The NM card is HUAWEI’s proprietary storage card – basically, a nano SIM-sized microSD card.

The Volume control buttons are on the right side, together with the Power button that doubles as a fingerprint sensor.

The side placement of the fingerprint sensor allows you to unlock the smartphone even when it’s mounted to your car’s dashboard.

There’s nothing at the top, except for a second microphone port, which is used for noise cancellation.

The HUAWEI nova 7 SE comes with a 3.5 mm audio jack, located at the bottom, together with the USB Type C port.

The HUAWEI nova 7 SE is powered by a relatively-large 4,000 mAh battery, which can be quickly recharged by its 40 watt fast charger.

Note : Apps That Require GMS

Do note that some Android apps require GMS for some features.

  • Telegram : GMS is required for location services. You can use it, you just cannot search for a location, or share your location.
  • Gmail : You will have to use a different email client, like Outlook. Or just use a web browser to get access to Gmail.
  • YouTube : The YouTube app requires GMS, so you will have to watch YouTube on a web browser.
  • Grab : The Grab app requires GMS for mapping functions. You can use it, but you won’t be able to locate your current position, or track your trip.

The HUAWEI nova 7i is powered by HiSilicon Kirin 810 platform, with four fast Cortex-A76 cores, four low-power Cortex-A55 cores, and the Mali-G52 MP6 GPU.

HUAWEI nova 7i Price + Availability

The HUAWEI nova 7i will be available in three colour options, from center to the sides – Sakura Pink, Crush Green, and Midnight Black.

HUAWEI has not officially revealed the price, but it launched in China as the nova 6 SE at CNY 2,199, which works out to RM 1,296 / S$432 / $317 / £242 / A$473.

So we expect it to cost RM 1,299 when it is officially made available for sale here in Malaysia. We will update this article when we know more.

On the left side, you will only find the dual SIM tray…

The Power button is on the right side (together with the Volume control), and doubles as a fingerprint sensor.

At the top, you can see an IR emitter (so it can be used as a remote control), a second microphone port, and the top speaker port.

At the bottom, you will find a USB Type C port flanked by the speaker ports and a microphone port.

The new Realme 2 Pro smartphone directly targets the HUAWEI nova 3i smartphone with its combination of good looks and great features at an incredible price point. Let’s compare them both, and see which is the better deal!

 

Realme 2 Pro vs. HUAWEI nova 3i

The Realme 2 Pro (Malaysia | Indonesia) and the HUAWEI nova 3i (Malaysia | Indonesia) are both mid-range smartphones with large 6.3-inch displays, and a dual-lens main camera. They are similar in many ways, but very different beasts in other aspects. Let’s take a closer look and show you what we mean!

Display : Realme 2 Pro

Both Realme 2 Pro (MY | ID) and HUAWEI nova 3i (MY | ID) boast very large 6.3-inch IPS displays, with a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels, and a high pixel density of 409 pixels per inch.

However, the Realme 2 Pro’s display has two additional advantages

  • it has a tiny dewdrop notch, which is much more challenging to design and build. But it means you get more pixels for the same display size, with more space for notifications
  • it is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, which is tougher than the aluminosilicate glass used in the nova 3i.

Performance : Realme 2 Pro

The HUAWEI nova 3i’s Kirin 710 is a strong mid-range processor, but the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 used by Realme 2 Pro is still superior. It has a slight advantage in CPU speed, but where it really shines is its GPU performance.

Ultimately, you may not notice performance difference between the two models in work applications, but the Realme 2 Pro (MY | ID) will offer noticeably better gaming performance.

Memory : Realme 2 Pro

When we compare both models at the same price point, the Realme 2 Pro (MY | ID) offers 8 GB of faster LPDDR4x memory, while the HUAWEI nova 3i (MY | ID) only comes with 4 GB of LPDDR4 memory.

Storage : Realme 2 Pro

Both Realme 2 Pro and HUAWEI nova 3i come with 128 GB of storage at the same price point. However, what most people don’t know is that the nova 3i uses the older, slower eMMC 5.1 flash storage.

The Realme 2 Pro (MY | ID) uses the much faster UFS 2.1 flash storage, which is also more power-efficient.

Front Camera : HUAWEI nova 3i

The HUAWEI nova 3i boasts a very high-resolution 24 MP front camera, coupled with a 2 MP depth sensor. This allows it to apply very accurate bokeh effects for great selfies.

While the nova 3i definitely has a superior front camera, the Realme 2 Pro, which has a high-resolution 16 MP front camera, has an ace up its sleeve – a very bright f/1.7 lens. This allows it to outperform the nova 3i in low-light conditions.

Main Camera : Realme 2 Pro

Both smartphones have dual-lens cameras that pairs a high-resolution imaging camera, with a depth sensor. But the Realme 2 Pro (MY | ID) has undoubtedly the far superior main camera.

It is built around the excellent Sony IMX398, a Dual Pixel image sensor that delivers faster and more accurate autofocus. Paired with a very bright f/1.7 lens, it handily outperforms the nova 3i in low-light conditions.

Wireless Connectivity : Realme 2 Pro

Both smartphones have similar LTE performance, but the Realme 2 Pro (MY | ID) has the clear-cut advantage in other connectivity options :

  • it supports the newer 802.11ac WiFi standard, offering much higher transfer rates.
  • it supports dual-band connectivity, switching between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz to avoid interference, and deliver better range and faster transfer rates.
  • it supports Bluetooth 5.0, which offers higher speeds and longer range, while using less power than Bluetooth 4.2.

Battery : Realme 2 Pro

The HUAWEI nova 3i (MY | ID) has a 3,340 mAh battery, while the Realme 2 Pro (MY | ID) has a slightly larger 3,500 mAh battery.

Price : Realme 2 Pro

With its superior set of features, you would expect the Realme 2 Pro to be more expensive. Surprisingly, it is CHEAPER than the HUAWEI nova 3i!

The HUAWEI nova 3i (MY | ID) has an official retail price of RM 1,299 / ~US$ 311, while the Realme 2 Pro (MY | ID) only costs RM 1,099 / ~US$ 263!

Our Verdict : Realme 2 Pro Is The Obvious Choice

The HUAWEI nova 3i (MY | ID) was a great mid-range smartphone, offering a ton of features and great performance at an affordable price point. Until the Realme 2 Pro (MY | ID) came along and spoilt the party.

With the exception of the front camera, the Realme 2 Pro handily beat the nova 3i in all other aspects… while offering a lower price tag! Unbelievable, but that’s precisely why we gave the Realme 2 Pro our Editor’s Choice Award.

17 May 2018 – HUAWEI today launched the HUAWEI nova 3e smartphone, which features a FullView display and a dual-lens camera. Here are the HUAWEI nova 3e price, specifications and full tech briefing. Enjoy!

 

HUAWEI nova 3e Tech Briefing

The HUAWEI nova 3e is targeted at the youth market, with its high-resolution 24 MP selfie camera and its FullView display with the iPhone X-like notch. It also has 2.5D curved edge glass panels, with rounded corners for a more sophisticated look and feel.

The HUAWEI nova 3e is powered by the octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 659, and comes with 4 GB of LPDDR3 memory, and a whopping 128 GB of internal flash storage. If that is not enough, you can upgrade it using a microSD card (up to 256 GB).

In addition to its 24 MP front camera, the nova 3e also comes with a rear dual-lens camera. This consists of a 16 MP main camera, with a 2 MP secondary camera that serves as a depth sensor. This depth sensor offers better depth perception, allowing the nova 3e to apply its bokeh effects with greater accuracy.

HUAWEI nova 3e Price & Availability

The HUAWEI nova 3e will be available from 25 May 2018 onwards, in two colour options – Klein Blue (with glitter cover film), and Midnight Black. HUAWEI announced an official retail price of RM 1,399 (inclusive of 6% GST) / US$ 352.50, but we have good news.

To assuage consumer concern about the upcoming zero-rating of the GST, HUAWEI is offering a RM 79 cash back up to 31 May 2018, so the actual retail price will be RM 1,320 / US$ 332.50. Purchasers of HUAWEI nova 3e will also receive a HUAWEI tripod and selfie stick worth RM 68 / US$ 17, while stocks last.

Starting 1 June 2018, we expect HUAWEI to maintain the price of RM 1,320.
