HUAWEI Mate Xs Foldable Smartphone : Hands-On Preview!

We recently had access (for a limited time) with a few HUAWEI Mate Xs foldable smartphones, and here is our hands-on preview!

We will also share with you EVERYTHING you need to know about the HUAWEI Mate Xs, including its specifications and price!

HUAWEI Mate Xs : Hands-On Experience!

Let’s start with our hands-on experience with the new HUAWEI Mate Xs foldable smartphone. Be sure to check out how the Falcon Wing mechanism works, and look at how flat the display looks after it’s fully unfolded!

The only buttons you will find on the Mate Xs are located along the right edge – the Power button which doubles as the fingerprint sensor, and the Volume control buttons.

The HUAWEI Mate Xs comes with a dual-slot hybrid card tray at the top. It supports two nano SIM cards, or a single nano SIM card and an NM card (for additional storage of up to 256 GB).

Even though it comes with a substantial camera bar on the right side, there is no 3.5 mm audio jack. Only a USB Type C, which supports USB 3.1 Gen1 – basically USB 3.0.

There is no “front camera”, because of its foldable design – you can just flip it over and use the back display and the “rear cameras” for selfies. This gives you great flexibility because the Leica quad camera system offers :

  • a 40 MP main camera, with f/1.8 aperture
  • a 16 MP ultra-wide camera, with f/2.2 aperture
  • an 8 MP telephoto camera, with f/2.4 aperture, and
  • a Time of Flight camera, with f/2.2 aperture

But its main killer feature is the ability to unfold the display to create a large, tablet-like 8-inch OLED display!

When folded, the front display is 6.6-inch in size, while the rear display is 6.38-inch in size.

HUAWEI Mate Xs : Improved HUAWEI Mate X!

The HUAWEI Mate Xs is basically an improved version of their first foldable smartphone, the HUAWEI Mate X.

It features the same design, with an external 8-inch foldable display, and a Leica quad-camera system. But there have been some changes internally.

New 5G Mobile Platform

Instead of pairing the Kirin 980 mobile SoC with the Balong 5000 5G chip, the HUAWEI Mate Xs uses the new Kirin 990 5G mobile SoC, with a triple-tier architecture :

  • two ARM Cortex-A76 high-performance cores at 2.86 GHz
  • two ARM Cortex-A76 sustained performance cores at 2.36 GHz
  • four ARM Cortex-A55 low-power cores at 1.95 GHz

It also comes with a powerful 16-core ARM Mali-G76 GPU, and a new Da Vinci neural architecture with 2 big NPUs and 1 small NPU.

Improved Cooling

Keeping the Kirin 990 5G cool is a new flexible bionic graphite cooling system that folds with the display, and dissipates heat through both sections.

Improved Falcon Wing Mechanism

While it uses the same foldable design and foldable OLED display, the Falcon Wing mechanism has been improved somewhat.

Leica Quad Camera System

The Leica quad camera system which works as both front and rear cameras offer great flexibility due to its mix of cameras :

  • a 40 MP main camera, with f/1.8 aperture
  • a 16 MP ultra-wide camera, with f/2.2 aperture
  • an 8 MP telephoto camera, with f/2.4 aperture, and
  • a Time of Flight camera, with f/2.2 aperture

HUAWEI Mate Xs vs Mate X : What’s Different?

The HUAWEI Mate Xs foldable smartphone has been announced, and will soon be here!

But what’s the difference between the HUAWEI Mate Xs, and the HUAWEI Mate X? Let’s find out!

HUAWEI Mate Xs vs Mate X : What’s Different?

Let’s start with our hands-on experience with the new HUAWEI Mate Xs foldable smartphone. You won’t be able to tell the HUAWEI Mate Xs from the HUAWEI Mate X by touching and feeling them – they both look and feel identical.

The HUAWEI Mate Xs is basically an improved version of their first foldable smartphone, the HUAWEI Mate X.

It features the same design, with an external 8-inch foldable display, and a Leica quad-camera system. But there have been some changes internally.

New 5G Mobile Platform

The HUAWEI Mate X pairs the Kirin 980 mobile SoC with the Balong 5000 5G chip. While that offers 5G connectivity and a good mobile platform, the separate chips mean higher power consumption and thermal output.

The HUAWEI Mate Xs, on the other hand, uses the new Kirin 990 5G mobile SoC, which has a multi-mode 5G modem built in.

The HUAWEI Mate X does not appear to feature this cooling design.

Improved Falcon Wing Mechanism

While it uses the same foldable design and foldable OLED display, the Falcon Wing mechanism has been improved somewhat in the HUAWEI Mate Xs.

So that’s really all that have changed from the HUAWEI Mate X to the new HUAWEI Mate Xs.

HUAWEI Mate X Key Features

Kirin 980 + Balong 5000

The HUAWEI Mate X is powered by their Kirin 980 mobile SoC, backed by the recently-launched Balong 5000 multi-mode 5G chipset.

The HUAWEI Kirin 980 is the world’s first 7 nm mobile SoC, and also the first to come with two NPUs, a Cat.21 modem and support for faster LPDDR4X-2133 memory.

It uses a new 2+2+4 cluster architecture, with two ARM Cortex-A76 high-performance cores running at 2.6 GHz, two additional ARM Cortex-A76 cores running at 1.92 GHz and four ARM Cortex-A55 cores running at 1.8 GHz for background or less-intensive workloads.

It also comes with a 24-core ARM Mali-G76 GPU and two NPUs, which should double both its graphics and AI performance. On top of that, it supports LTE Category 21 download speeds of up to 1.6 Gbps, as well as dual frequency GPS (L5 + L1) for 10X more accurate positioning.

The HUAWEI Balong 5000, on the other hand, supports 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G operation on a single chip. According to HUAWEI, it is able to achieve 5G download speeds of up to 6.5 Gbps.

It is also the world’s first chipset that supports both standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) network architectures for 5G. That means it is ready to support whatever 5G technology that is implemented at any point in time.

Falcon Wing Mechanical Hinge

The HUAWEI Mate X has two OLED panels – a 6.6-inch front display, and a 6.38-inch rear display, with a Falcon Wing Mechanical Hinge.  When unfolded, they transform into a large 8.0-inch display! The smartphone literally becomes a tablet.

[adrotate group=”1″]

Large Foldable Display

Consumers have always voted (with their wallets) for ever larger displays. The very large 8.0-inch display will allow the user to do more. Actions that used to be awkward with smaller displays will now be a piece of cake.

The front 6.6-inch display has a resolution of 1148 x 2,480 pixels, with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, while the inner 6.38-inch display has a resolution of 892 x 2480 pixels, with a 25:9 aspect ratio.

The unfolded 8.0-inch display has 2220 x 2580 pixels, with a 8:7.1 aspect ratio.

Leica Triple Camera System

The HUAWEI Mate X comes with a modified version of the Leica triple camera system used in the HUAWEI Mate20 Pro and Mate20 X smartphones, with the following cameras :

  • 40 MP main camera with f/1.8 aperture
  • 16 MP ultra wide-angle camera with f/2.2 aperture
  • 8 MP telephoto camera with f/2.4 aperture

What’s really special though is the fact that its foldable design makes it possible for you for the same camera system to work as both front and rear cameras!

When folded, the HUAWEI Mate X shows the camera’s view on both sides. This allows you use the camera in whatever orientation you wish, and also lets the subjects of your photos to help make sure they are looking their very best in your photos.

HUAWEI SuperCharge

The HUAWEI Mate X packs a large 4,500 mAh battery in its 5.4 mm thick body. But that’s not all. It supports the 55W HUAWEI SuperCharge fast charging technology, which they promise will get it from empty to 85% in just 30 minutes!

Fingerprint Sensor

The HUAWEI Mate X’s fingerprint sensor is integrated into the Power button, just like what we saw with the Samsung Galaxy A7 2018.

Hybrid SIM + NM Card Tray

The HUAWEI Mate X has a hybrid SIM + NM card tray. It has slots for two nano SIM cards, but the second SIM slot can be filled with an NM card for extra storage (up to 256 GB).

What is an NM card? Short for Nano Memory, the NM card is a HUAWEI invention that is basically a smaller version of the microSD card. In fact, it is shaped exactly like a nano SIM card, and is designed to fit the same slot.

While NM card may be the future, it is quite hard to get hold of – only HUAWEI makes and sells them. And they are pricier than microSD cards – the 128 GB NM card costs £44 in the UK, and RM 299 here in Malaysia.

Unless you are prepared to pay a premium for an NM card, be prepared to live without additional storage…
