HONOR 50 | HONOR 50 Pro : What You Need To Know!

The HONOR 50 and HONOR 50 Pro smartphones were just launched in China!

Here is what you need to know about these new Chinese smartphones with “Giant Eyes”!

HONOR 50 | HONOR 50 Pro : What You Need To Know!

The HONOR 50 and HONOR 50 Pro are the first smartphones to debut from the new HONOR, after HUAWEI sold the brand to Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology.

It is also their first smartphone to reintroduce Google Mobile Services (which is banned to their original parent company – HUAWEI).

That itself is the biggest, and arguably, the most important news of their launch event on 16 June 2021.

But the most eye-catching part of these new HONOR smartphones? That can only be their Giant Eyes!

Performance

They are both built around the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G mobile platform, which has 8 processor cores :

  • 1 x Qualcomm Kryo 670 Prime core (2.4 GHz)
  • 3 x Qualcomm Kryo 670 Gold cores (2.2 GHz)
  • 4 x Qualcomm Kryo 670 Silver cores (1.9 GHz)

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G also features the Adreno 642L GPU, Snapdragon X53 5G modem, Hexagon 770 AI engine, and Spectra 570L image signal processor.

The HONOR 50 Pro features dual VC (vacuum chamber) liquid cooling, paired with graphene sheet for better cooling performance. It also comes with a 4D linear motor for tactile feedback while gaming.

Both smartphone models come with 8 GB of RAM, and up to 256 GB of internal storage. Unfortunately, there is no microSD card support, so you will not be able to add more storage.

OLED Displays

Both the HONOR 50 and HONOR 50 Pro come with OLED displays, capable of 10-bit colour with 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut and a 1 to 5 million contrast ratio.

The HONOR 50 has a 6.57-inch display, with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. Meanwhile, the Pro model has a larger 6.72-inch display, with a resolution of 1236 x 2676 pixels.

Both displays have a 120 Hz refresh rate, and a 300 Hz touch sampling rate. They also have a 75° curved edge on both sides, with design cues that are remarkably reminiscent of the Samsung Galaxy S10.

Cameras

In the front, both models come with a 32 MP high-resolution selfie camera. The Pro model has an additional front camera – a wide-angle 12 MP camera that boasts larger pixels for better low-light performance.

In the back, they both feature the same “quad-camera” system, that consists of :

  • a 108 MP main camera, with f/1.9 aperture
  • an 8 MP wide-angle camera, with f/2.2 aperture
  • a 2 MP macro camera, with f/2.4 aperture
  • a 2 MP depth sensor, with f/2.4 aperture

We should point out that the depth sensor does NOT take any pictures, so it’s really just a triple camera system.

Battery + Charging

The HONOR 50 has a 4,300 mAh battery, and supports 66 watt Super Fast Charging :

  • 20 minutes to charge to 70%
  • 45 minutes to charge to 100%

The Pro model comes with a slightly smaller 4,000 mAh battery but supports 100 watt Super Fast Charging :

  • 20 minutes to charge to 90%
  • 25 minutes to charge to 100%

As you can see, they are both pretty darn fast at recharging their batteries!

HONOR 9X Malaysia Edition : What You Need To Know!

The HONOR 9X Malaysia Edition smartphone is now out, promising to deliver 48 MP photography on the cheap.

Find out how the HONOR 9X Malaysia Edition compares against the HONOR 8X, and the HONOR 9X Global Edition!

HONOR 9X Malaysia Edition

Released just over a year after the HONOR 8X, the HONOR 9X promises a few nice improvements, and a pop-up camera design. Let’s take a closer look!

Pop-Up Camera + Slightly Larger Display

The HONOR 9X Malaysia Edition joins the pop-up camera fad, just to squeeze out the display notch. Together with a slightly larger 6.59-inch display, HONOR eked out a 91% screen-to-body ratio.

The pop-up camera takes about a second to extend and retract, which may be problematic if you need to quickly snap a selfie. It sports the same 16 MP sensor, but with a smaller f/2.2 aperture.

Triple Rear Cameras

The biggest upgrade is, arguably, the 8 MP ultra-wide camera – it offers a more dramatic viewpoint, especially for architectural or scenery shots.

Its headlining 48 MP main camera looks nice on paper, but defaults to 12 MP for better image quality. Unless you manually switch to the 48 MP mode, the HONOR 8X actually has a higher resolution 20 MP camera.

This camera now supports video stabilisation, albeit only for 720p videos. Its Kirin 710F processor just isn’t fast enough to handle 1080p video stabilisation.

The third “camera” is a 2 MP depth sensor that captures depth information to help the main camera differentiate the subject from its background, to deliver more accurate software bokeh effects.

Same Platform, In A New Package

The HONOR 9X Malaysia Edition runs on the Kirin 710F, which is the same Kirin 710 platform used by the HONOR 8X, just assembled with a different package.

In other words – it has the same performance as the HONOR 8X. The only real difference is that you have the option of buying the HONOR 9X Malaysia Edition with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage.

The HONOR 9X and HONOR 9X Pro Global Edition comes with the newer and faster Kirin 810, which pairs two faster ARM Cortex-A76 cores with six low-power ARM Cortex-A55 cores.

In addition, it has a faster six-core ARM Mali-G52 MP6 GPU and is fabricated on the 7 nm process technology, which means it runs cooler and uses less power than the Kirin 710 or Kirin 710F.

Larger Battery + USB Type C Port

The HONOR 9X Malaysia Edition comes with a slightly larger 4,000 mAh battery – just 250 mAh (6.7%) more than the HONOR 8X.

The big upgrade though comes in the form of the USB 2.0 Type C port. It still charges at 18 watts, but at least it is bidirectional!

After a preview launch in June, the HONOR 20 Pro went on sale in August 2019. But guess what – the HONOR 20 Pro is now available in a new Icelandic Frost colour option!

Now, we were not invited to this very exclusive launch, but from what we heard, the new HONOR 20 Pro Icelandic Frost is so cool, it’s just what we need for this hot, hot world!

Here is EVERYTHING you need to know about the HONOR 20 Pro Icelandic Frost model!

It originally launched in four colour options – Sapphire Blue and Midnight Black in Malaysia, with Phantom Black and Phantom Blue available in other countries.

Until yesterday… when HONOR unveiled to their media friends, the new HONOR 20 Pro Icelandic Frost model!

Memory + Storage

The HONOR 20 Pro Icelandic Frost (Price Check) comes with 8 GB of LPDDR4x memory and 256 GB of internal storage.

  • A 48 MP main camera with f/1.4 aperture and OIS capability
  • An 8 MP telephoto camera with f/2.4 and OIS
  • A 16 MP super-wide angle camera with f/2.2 aperture
  • A 2 MP macro camera with f/2.4 aperture

The 48 MP main camera on both smartphones use the Sony IMX586 image sensor, and defaults to 12 MP because this allows for better image quality, thanks to the larger “combined” pixel size of 1.6 µm.

Battery

The HONOR 20 Pro Icelandic Frost (Price Check) has a 4,000 mAh battery, and supports 22.5 watt fast charging.

Colour

According to their press release, the Icelandic Frost colour was “inspired by the magnificence of Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon in Iceland – capturing the wonders of the glacier lagoon where icebergs glisten in the sunset, making the smartphone shine like a diamond“.

Well, we did not check it out in person, but we can tell from the photo that HONOR was not lying about how shiny it is!

Look at that mirror finish! So shiny you can use it to reflect the sun’s glare and combat climate change!

Seriously though – it’s so shiny, it doubles as a mirror when you need to apply your make up, or to find out if you have a stalker…

Who Does The HUAWEI Trump Ban Affect?

The HUAWEI Trump ban covers both HUAWEI and its sub-brand, HONOR. As it so happens, HONOR is launching their HONOR 20 smartphone today.

Together with the success of their P30 and P30 Pro smartphones, the ban could not come at a worst time.

What Exactly Does The HUAWEI Trump Ban Do?

Many pundits wrongly quoted Trump’s executive order as the basis for the Google and other US companies suspending supplies to HUAWEI. That is only partly true.

His executive order does not mention HUAWEI at all. In fact, it actually applies to every company listed in the US Entity List, which is over 270 pages long!

It basically prohibits “any acquisition, importation, transfer, installation, dealing in, or use of any information and communications technology or service (transaction)” by “any person… subject to the jurisdiction of the United States” to “persons owned by, controlled by, or subject to the jurisdiction or direction of a foreign adversary“.

It was really the US Commerce Department’s action of adding HUAWEI (and its 68 affiliates) to the Entity List that forced US companies to stop doing business with HUAWEI.

Even without Trump’s executive order, US companies are generally prohibited from doing business with companies listed in the Entity List. They will have to apply for a licence to export products to those entities.

The HUAWEI Trump Ban Effects

Google

Google rescinded HUAWEI’s Android licence, as well as access to Google Play services and the Play Store. But what does that mean?

  • Current HUAWEI and HONOR devices that run on Android and were launched on, or before 16 May 2019 will continue to have access to Google Play services, and the Google Play Store..
  • HUAWEI and HONOR devices launched from 17 May 2019 onwards will not have access to Android, Google Play services, or Google Play Store.

  • HUAWEI and HONOR will continue to receive Android software updates and patches until 19 August 2019.

In other words, if you own a HUAWEI or HONOR smartphone that was launched before 16 May 2019, you have nothing to worry about… at least until August 2019.

ARM

The suspension of business between ARM and HUAWEI has no real effect in the short to medium-term, because HUAWEI can continue to manufacture existing and completed designs.

Read our full report : The HUAWEI ARM Business Suspension – How Bad Is This?

Processor Suppliers : Intel, Qualcomm, Broadcom

HUAWEI has long worked on creating their own mobile SoCs, like their flagship-class Kirin 970 and Kirin 980. They have been pretty successful in this regard – all of their top smartphones run on Kirin processors.

They do not have a replacement for the Intel processors that power their MateBook laptops. However, they have apparently prepared for this eventuality by stockpiling 3 months worth of chips.

Memory Suppliers : Micron, Infineon

Fortunately for HUAWEI, most DRAM manufacturers are not US companies, or subject to US law. Whereas Micron (a US company) can no longer supply HUAWEI with memory chips, there are other DRAM companies that can make up the shortfall… including their competitor, Samsung.

Tech Organisations : WiFi, Bluetooth, SD New!

Initially, HUAWEI was quietly but unceremoniously booted from the Wi-Fi Alliance, the Bluetooth SIG and the SD Association. But two weeks later, their memberships were quietly restored. Read our full reports :

Perplexingly, the IEEE announced and retracted their ban on HUAWEI scientists and engineers serving as peer reviewers and editors in just four days.

Read our full report : The IEEE Reverses HUAWEI Ban After Just 4 Days!

How Does The HUAWEI Trump Ban Affect YOU?

If you own a HUAWEI or HONOR smartphone sold on or before 16 May 2019, you have NOTHING to worry about.

  • Your HUAWEI or HONOR smartphone will continue to work normally
  • You will continue to have access to Google Play services, and the Google Play Store.
  • You will continue to receive updates and security patches

If you are planning to purchase a future HUAWEI or HONOR smartphone, you should wait and see.

  • Despite the ban, HUAWEI still has access to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).
  • They can still produce smartphones that run on Android, but won’t be able to install Google Play services, the Google Play Store, or apps by US companies like YouTube and Facebook.
  • HUAWEI has been working on its own mobile operating system, HongMeng OS, which is said to be undergoing trials right now.
  • Future HUAWEI smartphones may run on HongMeng OS and their own slew of apps, but there will be a dearth of third-party apps, at least initially.
  • If the ban persists, HUAWEI will likely be forced to ship future smartphones with stock Android and HUAWEI apps to replace Google Play services.

What About New Devices?

The partial licence from the US Commerce Department only permits “service and support” for “existing” devices that were “available to the public on or before May 16, 2019“.

HUAWEI and its affiliates can create and sell new devices. However, they will not be covered by the temporary licence, and therefore…

  • they cannot have Google Play services or Play Store, or any US apps like YouTube and Instagram, installed
  • they are not entitled to Android software updates either

That said, US companies or companies that use substantial US technologies can apply to the US Commerce Department for special licences to sell to HUAWEI. As of July 2019, over 50 applications were submitted for consideration.

How Will This Affect HUAWEI’s Business?

This is, no doubt, a really serious problem for HUAWEI. Losing the ability to include Google services will be detrimental to the success of future devices.

The disruption of their supply chain will start to bite if the ban persists beyond three months – that’s when their stockpile runs out. They will also lose the ability to support existing customers with software patches.

However, the issuance of the temporary licence, just days after listing HUAWEI as a foreign adversary and a national security threat, signals that the HUAWEI Trump ban is just another bargaining chip in the US-China trade war.

In all likelihood, Trump is using the HUAWEI ban to force China to accept his terms for a trade deal. He badly needs a face-saving win after numerous failures in recent months.

Why This Is Bad For The Global Economy + Security

President Trump’s persistent pressure on HUAWEI is forcing a decoupling of the Chinese and American economies. This is bad for the global economy, as well as global security.

The intertwining of US and Chinese economies is a form of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) that was once guaranteed by nuclear weapons.

But with an erratic US President cutting off supply to US products and technology essential for their companies, China will continue to turn inwards to insulate their economy, even adopting a form of economic Juche.

The more their economies decouple, the more the US loses the ability to engage China positively on a variety of geopolitical issues. In fact, it may eventually lead to an outright Cold War between the US and China, if not military confrontation.

Vapour Launch No More!

At that time, it was a vapour launch, because none of the phones were made available for sale… thanks to the Trump ban.

On 13 April, HONOR Malaysia Country Manager George Zhao sent us a handwritten note with a special voucher.

Based on the note and voucher, we confirmed with a source that the HONOR 20 would start in their official store and retail stores beginning 21 June 2019!

HUAWEI Outsmarts SD + microSD Ban With NM Card! 2.0

HUAWEI has just been removed as a member of the SD Association, because of the Trump ban. But they got an ace up their sleeves this time – their NM Card format!

Find out how the HUAWEI NM Card format lets them bypass the SD and microSD ban, and what else HUAWEI can do moving forward!

Updated @ 2019-05-31 : The SD Association quietly restored HUAWEI as a member. Seriously.

Originally posted @ 2019-05-25

What SD + microSD Ban?

The HUAWEI Trump ban keeps expanding its reach. Even the international SD Association has been forced to remove HUAWEI as a member.

This prevents HUAWEI and HONOR from making and selling any products that use the SD standards. Effectively, all future HUAWEI and HONOR smartphones can no longer be manufactured with microSD support.

What About Current Smartphones?

Don’t worry! Your HUAWEI and HONOR smartphones will continue to work normally with microSD cards.

These actions by the US Department of Commerce and the SD Association only apply to HUAWEI and HONOR smartphones that have not been released by 15 May 2019 onwards.

Recommended Reading : The HUAWEI Trump Ban – Everything You Need To Know!

NM Card To The Rescue!

HUAWEI now seem absolutely prescient when they released their own NM Card format together with the HUAWEI Mate20 smartphones last year.

The NM Card, or the HUAWEI Nano Memory Card in full, is 45% smaller than the microSD card. Precisely designed to mimic the shape and size of a nano SIM card, it allows for a more compact hybrid SIM tray design.

But more importantly, in the context of the Trump ban, the NM Card is a HUAWEI standard, and not a SD Association standard.

What Are Their Options?

Option A : Switch To NM Card

Thanks to their foresight in creating the NM Card standard, HUAWEI can easily replace microSD card slots with NM Card slots in their future smartphones.

Now, to be certain, the NM Card is neither cheap nor ubiquitous. The only company making and selling them is HUAWEI.

Hence, they have so far been introduced only in their flagship smartphones, like the HUAWEI Mate20, HUAWEI Mate20 ProHUAWEI Mate20 X, HUAWEI P30 and HUAWEI P30 Pro smartphones.

We expect HUAWEI to continue this trend, perhaps introducing NM Card into their higher mid-range devices; while simultaneously cutting prices on NM Cards.

Option B : Skip microSD Card

Switching to NM Card will not work well for their mid-range and entry-level smartphones, because the greatest appeal of microSD cards is their low cost and ubiquity.

If the Trump ban does not get resolved soon, the best option would be to skip the microSD card slot entirely and just increase the internal storage of their mid-range and entry-level smartphones.

We have already seen this trend with some Android smartphones like the OPPO R17 Pro, the Xiaomi Mi A2, and the HONOR 10. Apple iPhones never had the option in the first place, and they are still selling well!

Why Did The SD Association Remove HUAWEI?

[adrotate group=”2″]

The problem isn’t really the SD Association per se. It is the fact that the SD licence is owned and enforced by a US company, SD-3C LLC.

When the Trump Administration added HUAWEI to the Entity List, SD-3C LLC is forced to stop their licensing arrangements with HUAWEI.

Because Micron is a part owner of SD-3C LLC, technology of US origin is also involved – the same issue that forced ARM to sever business ties with HUAWEI.

And HUAWEI Is Back In Again

Almost as quickly and quietly as the SD Association removed HUAWEI as a member, they restored HUAWEI’s membership around 29 May 2019.

There was no official explanation for both removing HUAWEI or restoring them, all in a matter of days.

HUAWEI Legal Motion Too Late, But China Has A Trump Card!

HUAWEI today struck back at the Trump ban, by challenging its constitutionality. Meanwhile, China hints at  a Trump card, pun intended…

We examine why the HUAWEI legal motion is too late to help them, but China’s Trump card may be what they need to break through the Trump ban.

HUAWEI Challenges Constitutionality Of The Trump Ban

On 29 May 2019, HUAWEI filed a motion for a summary judgment in its challenge that Section 889 of the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (2019 NDAA) is unconstitutional.

In the complaint, HUAWEI argued that Section 889 of the 2019 NDAA singled out HUAWEI by name, and not only bars U.S. government agencies from buying HUAWEI equipment and services, but also bars them from, contracting with, or awarding grants or loans to third parties who buy HUAWEI equipment or services — even if there is no impact or connection to the U.S. government.

Glen Nager, HUAWEI’s lead counsel for the case, said Section 889 of the 2019 NDAA violates the Bill of Attainder, Due Process, and Vesting Clauses of the United States Constitution. Thus, the case is purely “a matter of law” as there are no facts at issue, thereby justifying the motion for a summary judgement to speed up the process.

In line with a court scheduling order, a hearing on the motion is set for 19 September 2019.

The Trump Ban Will Not Deliver Cybersecurity

HUAWEI also called on the U.S. government to halt its campaign against HUAWEI, because “it will not deliver cybersecurity“.

Banning Huawei using cybersecurity as an excuse “will do nothing to make networks more secure. They provide a false sense of security, and distract attention from the real challenges we face,” said Song Liuping, Huawei’s chief legal officer.

“Politicians in the U.S. are using the strength of an entire nation to come after a private company,” Song noted. “This is not normal. Almost never seen in history.”

“The U.S. government has provided no evidence to show that Huawei is a security threat. There is no gun, no smoke. Only speculation,” Song added.

Song also addressed the addition of Huawei to the “Entity List” by the U.S. Commerce Department two weeks ago. “This sets a dangerous precedent. Today it’s telecoms and Huawei. Tomorrow it could be your industry, your company, your consumers,” he said.

“The judicial system is the last line of defense for justice. Huawei has confidence in the independence and integrity of the U.S. judicial system. We hope that mistakes in the NDAA can be corrected by the court,” Song added.

HUAWEI Legal Motion Too Late To Help

With a hearing set for 3.5 months later, this legal challenge is frankly too late to stop the Trump ban from doing serious damage to HUAWEI.

Depending on who you believe, HUAWEI has enough components stockpiled for 3-12 months. It’s quite possible they will run out of components for at least some of their devices before the hearing even takes place!

In the meantime, the HONOR 20 and HONOR 20 Pro smartphones that just launched are stuck in limbo, because the Trump ban prohibits them from integrating Google Play services and the Play Store.

The same issue will plague all HUAWEI and HONOR devices that were originally scheduled to be launched after 15 May 2019.

Even worse, the temporary partial licence the Trump Administration issued to let HUAWEI and HONOR support their customers runs out by 19 August 2019a full month before the motion is even heard!

Until the Trump ban is lifted or vacated on constitutional grounds, those HUAWEI and HONOR smartphones have no commercial chance outside of China. They will all have to be postponed until this crisis is over…

The Trump Card That Will Save HUAWEI…

What will save HUAWEI is no legal challenge… but a Trump card that the Chinese government has recently hinted at using – rare earths.

Rare earths are CRITICAL to the production of electronics, and that includes everything from smartphones to fighter jets and batteries.

China controls 90% of the world’s rare earth production, and more importantly – 80% of rare earth imports by the US. This is literally the Trump card that could force Trump to back off, and save HUAWEI.

Beijing put Washington on notice about their Trump card when both Chinese President Xi Jinping and his top economic advisor, Vice Premier Liu He, made a well-publicised visit to a rare earth factory in Jiangxi, eastern China.

If that was not obvious enough, the Chinese media (often mouthpieces of the party) made sure everyone knew that rare earths was “an ace in Beijing’s hand“, and “Don’t say you haven’t been warned“.

Even China’s economic planner, the National Development and Reform Commission, said in response to a question “Do you suggest that rare earths will become a part of China’s countermeasures against the US’s unwarranted pressure?” :

What I can tell you is that if someone wants to use our rare earths to manufacture products and use them to curb China’s development, then I’m sure the people of Ganzhou and across China will not be happy with that.”

Of course, Beijing might just be hoping that the threat of using their Trump card will be enough, because this nuclear option has its drawbacks.

Then again, Beijing has never dealt with anyone like Donald Trump… For a special person like that, perhaps a Trump card truly is necessary…

HONOR 20 Pro + HONOR 20 Price, Offers + Specifications!

The HONOR 20 Pro and HONOR 20 smartphones have just been launched, both in London and in Kuala Lumpur!

Let’s take a look at these latest HONOR flagship smartphones with 4 rear cameras – their key features, the official launch presentation, and their prices and offers!

What Trump Ban? HONOR 20 Series Launched!

In spite of the ongoing troubles with the Trump Administration, HONOR went ahead and launched their latest HONOR 20 series flagship smartphones!

In their launch presentation, details were short on their response to the Trump ban. They would only say that they are confident of supporting their customers, and that they are here to stay.

Now, the phones on display at the launch had Google Play services and Play Store installed. But as you will see later, they are both not available for sale just yet.

HONOR 20 Series Key Features

Both models have the same 6.26-inch LPTS display, and run on the same HUAWEI Kirin 980 mobile SoC.

They too have the same 32 MP front camera, and the same colour options – Sapphire Blue and Midnight Black in Malaysia, with Phantom Black and Phantom Blue available in other countries.

They differ in three main areas, specifically…

Memory + Storage

The HONOR 20 has 6 GB of LPDDR4x memory and 128 GB of internal storage, with while the Pro version comes with 8 GB of LPDDR4x memory and 256 GB of internal storage.

Rear Cameras

Both devices feature a quad camera system at the back. However, there are quite big differences :

  • The HONOR 20 has a 48MP main camera with f/1.8 aperture, while Pro version features a wider, brighter f/1.4 aperture and adds OIS capability.
  • The HONOR 20 has a 2MP depth sensor, instead of the Pro version’s 8MP telephoto camera with f/2.4 and OIS.
  • They both have the same 16MP super-wide angle camera with f/2.2 aperture.
  • They both have the same 2MP macro camera with f/2.4 aperture.

The 48 MP main camera on both smartphones use the Sony IMX586 image sensor, and defaults to 12 MP because this allows for better image quality, thanks to the larger “combined” pixel size of 1.6 µm.

Battery

The HONOR 20 has a 3,750 mAh battery, while the Pro version has a slightly larger 4,000 mAh battery. They both support 22.5 watt fast charging.

The HONOR 20 Lite (HONOR 10i) Sneak Preview!

HONOR is about to launch the HONOR 20 Lite, also known as the HONOR 10i in some countries.

But before its official launch, we present to you – our sneak preview of the upcoming HONOR 20 Lite smartphone!

The Official HONOR 20 Lite Tech Briefing

Let’s start off with this HONOR 20 Lite tech briefing, for a quick overview of its key features!

The HONOR 20 Lite Up Close!

Like its predecessor, the HONOR 10 Lite, the HONOR 20 Lite has a 6.21-inch display, with a dewdrop notch. It is also powered by the same Kirin 710 mobile SOC, and uses the same design with a rear fingerprint sensor.

It does, however, have more memory and a lot more storage…. as well as a new triple-lens main camera, and a higher-resolution 32 MP front camera!

At the top, you will find the hybrid SIM tray, with a second microphone/

The Power and Volume control buttons are placed on the right side, with the left side completely clean.

Like the HONOR 10 Lite, the HONOR 20 Lite continues to use the old micro USB port. It also has the 3.5 mm audio port.

The row of holes on the left is the speaker port. The tiny hole between the micro USB port and the audio port is the main microphone.

The HONOR 20 Lite Cameras

The HONOR 20 Lite has a new, higher-resolution 32 MP front camera with a large and bright f/2.0 aperture. This is an upgrade from the 24 MP front camera of the HONOR 10 Lite.

The bright f/2.0 lens allows it to better handle low-light conditions – important since the front camera does not have any flash.

At the back, it sports a new triple-lens camera module. From left to right, they are the 8 MP ultra-wide camera (f/2.4 aperture), 24 MP main camera (f/1.8 aperture), and a 2 MP depth sensor (f/2.4 aperture).

The depth sensor does not actually take any pictures. Instead, it lets the camera to more accurately differentiate the subject from its background, allowing for more realistic software bokeh effects.

Rear Fingerprint Sensor

Like the HONOR 10 Lite, the HONOR 20 Lite uses a rear fingerprint sensor. It is very fast and accurate, and allows you to trigger specific actions with different fingers.

The only downside? You can’t use it to unlock the device while it’s attached to a car mount.

That’s when you need to use the Face Unlock feature. It uses the front camera and facial recognition algorithms to authenticate your identity.

Hybrid SIM Tray

The HONOR 20 Lite retained the hybrid SIM tray. This means the SIM 2 slot doubles as a microSD card slot.

You can either use a second nanoSIM card, or a microSD card for extra storage capacity. But not both at the same time.

The microSD slot will come in handy, even though there is a whopping 128 GB of internal storage.

Using a microSD card helps to protect your data, including photos and videos, in the event your phone is physically damaged or destroyed.

Dewdrop Notch Display

The HONOR 20 Lite has a Full HD+ display with a dewdrop notch, like the HONOR 10 Lite. This display has an aspect ratio of 19.5:9, and a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. However, HONOR swapped out the AMOLED panel for an IPS panel.

The display notch allows for notifications to be confined to the top, giving you more space for your work… or really, your games. Heh… In games or apps that do not support the notch, it will simply “disappear” by turning black.

GPU Turbo

GPU Turbo is a hardware and software combination that increases the “efficiency” of the GPU by up to 60%.

It does not mean you get a 60% boost in frame rate, although Honor says it will greatly reduce the jitter rate (variance between the highest and lowest frame rates), while appreciably increasing the overall frame rate.

How does GPU Turbo work? From what we understand, it uses a proprietary algorithm in the graphics driver to detect the change between the current frame being rendered, and the next one.

This allows the HONOR 20 Lite to boost CPU and GPU performance for completely new frames, and reduce them for frames with few changes.

The only downside? GPU Turbo support is currently limited. Extremely limited.

From what we understand – it will only work with PUBG MobileMobile Legends: Bang Bang and King Glory. Naturally, game support will be extended to more games over time.

The HONOR View20 Preview : 48 MP + TOF Cameras FTW?

The new HONOR View20 smartphone boasts a 48 MP main camera, paired with a 3D TOF camera. Is the 48 MP camera a game changer? What on earth is a 3D TOF camera?

In our preview, we will take a close look at the HONOR View20, and share with you details on its 48 MP main camera, and the 3D TOF camera!

The New HONOR View20 Smartphone

The HONOR View20 is built around the new Hisilicon Kirin 980 mobile SoC, with two variants – 6 GB RAM with 128 GB storage, or 8 GB RAM with 256 GB storage.

The large storage capacity is important, because the View20 lacks a microSD card slot.

The HONOR team extended their experience with advanced nanolithography coating technologies to develop a new V-shaped colour gradient with a gleaming effect for the View20’s back panel.

They also managed to pack a large 4,000 mAh battery into its svelte form factor, with 22.5 watt fast charging capabilities.

HONOR View20 Price + Availability

The HONOR View20 will be available in four colour options, three of which are shown in this video :

It will be available in two variants, with the following launch prices :

  • 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage : €569 / £499 / CNY 2,999 / RM 1,999
  • 8 GB RAM + 256 GB storage : €649 / £579 / CNY 3,499 / RM 2,499

HONOR View20 Key Features

6.4-inch Punch Hole Display

Like the recently-launched HUAWEI nova 4, the HONOR View20 has a 6.4-inch display with a punch hole 25 MP front camera, which allows it deliver a 91.8% screen-to-body ratio.

Flagship Processor + Graphics + AI

The HONOR View20 is powered by the Hisilicon Kirin 980, which is the first 7 nm mobile SoC in the world. It is also the first to come with two NPUs, a Cat.21 modem and support for faster LPDDR4X-2133 memory.

The Kirin 980 also uses a new 2+2+4 cluster architecture, with two ARM Cortex-A76 high-performance cores running at 2.6 GHz, two additional ARM Cortex-A76 cores running at 1.92 GHz and four ARM Cortex-A55 cores running at 1.8 GHz for background or less-intensive workloads.

It also comes with a 24-core ARM Mali-G76 GPU and two NPUs, which should double both its graphics and AI performance.

On top of that, it supports LTE Category 21 download speeds of up to 1.6 Gbps, as well as dual frequency GPS (L5 + L1) for 10X more accurate positioning.

[adrotate group=”1″]

48 MP + 3D TOF Cameras

While the HUAWEI nova 4 opted to go with a triple camera setup, the HONOR team chose a dual camera module for the View20. It pairs a 48 MP main camera with a 3D TOF camera.

The 48 MP main camera has a large ½-inch Sony IMX586 sensor, with 48 million pixels – each 0.8 micron in size. It is paired with a fast, bright f/1.8 lens, which would give it excellent low-light performance.

The second camera is a ToF (Time of Flight) camera, which does not actually take any photos.

Paired with an LED emitter that sends out pulses of invisible near infra-red light, its sensor captures the reflected light to create a 3D map of objects and their distances.

This 3D TOF camera also allows the View20 to more accurately separate the subject of your photograph from the background, for better retouching of the subject and background blurring.

It can also turn the View20 into a motion-controlled gaming console with compatible games.

The Honor 8X Up Close!

The new honor 8X looks deceptively small. It actually boasts the industry’s largest display, edging out the Samsung Galaxy Note9, and matching the Apple Xs Max. Yet it still fits comfortably in our hands, thanks to extremely thin bezels and a display notch.

Despite its more modern design, honor went back a little, reintroducing the old microUSB 2.0 port. This is surprising since they first introduced the bidirectional USB-C port in the honor 8 two years ago!

They also dropped the IR transmitted at the top, which allowed the.honor 8 to be used as a remote control.

New Level Of Mid-Range Performance

The honor 8X smartphone boasts the new Kirin 710 mobile SoC from HUAWEI’s HiSilicon subsidiary.

It is not the flagship-class SoC like the Kirin 950 used in the honor 8, but thanks to advances in semiconductor design and fabrication, it offers better performance with lower power consumption.

The Kirin 710 is actually a mid-range version of the Kirin 970 SoC that powers the honor 10 smartphone.

It uses the same four high-performance Cortex-A73 cores, with the same four low-power Cortex-A53 cores – just with slightly lower clock speeds.

It is paired with 4 GB of LPDDR4 memory, and 64 GB of internal flash storage.

Advances in LTE technology allows the Kirin 710 to deliver much faster Cat13 upload speeds of up to 150 Mbps, and Cat12 download speeds of up to 600 Mbps.

However, its WiFi support is limited to a/b/g/n protocols, and only in the 2.4 GHz band.

Display Notch

The honor 8X has a Full HD+ display, with an aspect ratio of 19:9 and a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. It features the display notch made popular by the iPhone X, to maximise its display size.

Although the notification icons nearest to the notch can appear “cut-off”, the hnor 8X is smart enough to work around the notch. In games and applications that don’t support the notification area, it just displays the main 1080 x 2240 section.

The Honor 8X Cameras

Hidden in the display notch is a high-resolution 16 MP camera with f/2.0 lens. It is supposedly capable of recording 1080p videos, but in our early firmware, it is limited to 720p video recording.

We were hoping that the honor 8X’s AI Camera would be based on the dual-camera design of the honor 10 and the honor 8 smartphones, they went instead with a single 20 MP camera paired with a 2 MP depth sensor.

The 20 MP camera uses a PDAF (phase detection autofocus) sensor paired with a fast and bright f/1.8 lens.

The 2 MP depth sensor has only one job – to deliver better depth perception, so the honor 8X can better differentiate the background from the subjects and more accurately apply the software bokeh effects.

Despite its high-resolution image sensor, the 20 MP camera can only record 1080p videos at up to 60 fps. It is not optically-stabilised, and surprisingly lacks electronic image stabilisation.

Fingerprint Sensor

To maximise display size in a relatively small form factor, honor had to use a rear fingerprint sensor. You may recall that they used a front sensor for the honor 10.

The honor 8X’s rear fingerprint sensor is very good – easy to train and works fast and accurately. The only problem that all rear fingerprint sensors have – you can’t use it while it’s attached to a car mount. If you intend to use it while driving, make sure you set-up and use the Face unlock feature.

[adrotate group=”1″]

Triple Slot Tray

honor smartphones all have dual SIM, dual standby capabilities. However, to save space, the honor 10 offered two nano SIM trays and removed the microSD card slot. The honor 8, on the other hand, opted for a hybrid SIM tray – the second nano SIM can be swapped out for a microSD card.

The honor 8X offers the ultimate option – a triple slot tray. You can use a microSD card to expand its storage, while still using two nano SIM cards.

Ergonomics

With its very large 6.5-inch display, the honor 8X is definitely a much larger smartphone than the honor 8 or honor 10 smartphones.

The honor 8X is just over 76 mm wide, and 160 mm tall, but remains under 8 mm thick. It is comparable in size to the new Apple iPhone Xs Max, but quite a bit lighter at just 175 grams.

The IPS display is very bright and vivid indoors, and does a decent job outdoors despite not being an AMOLED display. The non-standard 19:9 aspect ratio, while useful in giving you more screen space, will result in some pillarboxing for movies.

honor 8X Camera Performance – Photos

honor did not reveal the model of the sensor used in the 20 MP main camera, but the photos have a resolution of 5120 x 3840 pixels, with the 4:3 aspect ratio.

Despite the high resolution, Honor appears to use a more efficient (or lossier) compression algorithm, resulting in a file size of between 3 MB and 4 MB in most photos.

Here are 8 high-resolution samples for you to check out. Click on them to load the full-sized photos, which you can also download to examine.

honor 8X Camera Performance – Video Recording

Despite its high-resolution 20 MP sensor, the honor 8X can only record 1080p videos at up to 60 fps. Here are two videos we recorded to test its video recording capabilities.

Honor 8X Video Recording Sample #1 : Piano

First off – we can see that there is no optical or electrionic image stabilisation, so the video can get very jerky. The audio also lacks sufficient noise cancellation.

On the bright side, the image quality is very good, and the colours are vivid, albeit a little oversaturated. There is also very good control of the highlights. A shame about the lack of stabilisation.

Honor 8X Video Recording Sample #2 : Food Fair

The lack of image stabilisation is obvious from the jerkiness. A real shame because the image quality is very good.

Never Coming – The Full Review

When HONOR loaned us this unit, they said that it was a production unit running on a beta version of the firmware.

We were planning to upgrade this preview to a full review after testing with a production firmware, but the review sample never received it.

Unboxing The Honor Play

The Honor Play (US Price Check | MY Price Check) comes in a plain white box. It is, after all, a mid-range smartphone. Don’t expect bling.

[adrotate group=”2″]

Once you fully unbox it, you will find the following items :

  • One Honor Play smartphone
  • One soft TPU bumper case
  • One SIM tray extractor pin
  • One 18 watt Huawei Quick Charge USB adaptor
  • One USB Type C cable

The package may be sparse but practical. Who needs cheap earbuds? What’s more important is that it comes with a free TPU bumper case so you can protect your new smartphone right out of the box!

The Honor Play Smartphone Up Close!

Designed for mobile gaming, the Honor Play (US Price Check | MY Price Check) is powered by the Kirin 970 SoC, which features a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) that speeds up certain AI functions. To ensure that you get to play your games for hours on-end, it comes with a larger 3,750 mAh LiPo battery that supports 18 W fast charging.

Because it is a larger device, the Honor Play is heavier than the Honor 10 (Price Check). But surprisingly, it is slightly thinner even though with a 10% larger battery!

Front + Rear Cameras

The Honor Play (US Price Check | MY Price Check) comes with a high-resolution selfie camera in the front. It has a 16 MP sensor, paired with a fast f/2.2 lens. There appears to be a laser diode on the other side, which is probably used for their AR emoji and 3D face lighting features. It doesn’t have a flash, but uses screen flash instead.

The camera at the back uses a dual-lens system that consists of a 16 MP camera (with a PDAF sensor and f/2.2 lens), and a 2 MP depth-sensing camera. The depth-sensing camera helps the main camera differentiate between the subjects in a photo and its background, allowing for more accurate software bokeh effects.

Please note that the main camera lens module will protrude through the TPU bumper case. The bumper case, therefore, cannot prevent damage to the main camera.

[adrotate group=”1″]

Fingerprint Sensor

Honor opted to go with a rear fingerprint sensor with the Honor Play (US Price Check | MY Price Check). It is very fast and accurate, and allows you to trigger specific actions with different fingers.

The only downside? You can’t use it to unlock the device while it’s attached to a car mount. That’s when you need to use the Face Unlock feature. It uses the front camera and facial recognition algorithms to authenticate your identity, so it will work even with the Honor Play mounted on your car’s dashboard.

Hybrid SIM Tray

Unlike the Honor 10 (Price Check), the Honor Play has a hybrid SIM tray. This means the SIM 2 slot doubles as a microSD card slot. You can either use a second nanoSIM card, or a microSD card for extra storage capacity.

Its 64 GB internal storage capacity is plenty for many people, but microSD storage offers additional peace of mind – even if the phone is physically damaged or destroyed, you can still recover your data or photos and videos from the microSD card.

Display Notch

The Honor Play (US Price Check | MY Price Check) has a Full HD+ display with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9, and a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. It features a display notch that is noticeably larger than that of the Honor 10 (Price Check).

Honor also claims that it will reduce the Kirin 970 SoC‘s power consumption by 30%, extending its battery life.  In a specific test using King Glory 1.34.1.11, the Honor Play lasted 4.5 hours – 30 minutes longer than the Apple iPhone X (Price Check).

How does GPU Turbo work? From what we understand, it uses a proprietary algorithm in the graphics driver to detect the change between the current frame being rendered, and the next one. This allows the Honor Play to boost CPU and GPU performance for completely new frames, and reduce them for frames with few changes.

The only downside? GPU Turbo support is currently limited. Extremely limited. From what we understand – it will only work with PUBG Mobile, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and King Glory. Naturally, game support will be extended to more games over time.

AI Game 4D Experience

The Honor Play also offers an “AI Game 4D Experience” with a feature they call Smart Shock. In certain games (like PUBG), Smart Shock will vibrate the device according to the type of weapon used in the game.

[adrotate group=”2″]

The AI Game 4D Experience also includes the 3D Gaming Audio capability. Basically, it’s a 3D spatial surround sound effect that helps you to judge the azimuth of a particular sound effect (like footsteps or an explosion).

Game Suite

This is a software feature that reduces network latency and game lag, and offers an uninterrupted gaming experience. Turning it on restricts the notifications that you receive, and allows you to play your game while receiving calls simultaneously.

You will only receive notifications for incoming calls, your alarms and low power alerts. Even these notifications will appear smaller, so they won’t disrupt your gaming experience.

Setting Up The Honor Play

Setting up the Honor Play (US Price Check | MY Price Check) is easy, and takes no more than 10 minutes if you are setting it up as a new device. Take a look at a video of the initial setup process.

Ergonomics

The Honor Play (US Price Check | MY Price Check) is definitely much larger than the Honor 10 (Price Check). In fact, it is about the same size as the Samsung Galaxy S9+ – they both have similar-sized displays. It is a phablet that is a better fit for those with bigger hands and pockets.

The 6.3-inch IPS display is bright and brilliant even in daylight, which means you get to play your games wherever you go. The non-standard 18:9 aspect ratio of the main display section gives you more screen space for gaming, but you will get some pillarboxing while watching movies.

Available Memory + Storage

For a mid-range smartphone, the Honor Play (US Price Check | MY Price Check) comes with rather large memory and storage capacities. It has 4 GB of memory, of which 1.52 GB (38%) is available for use. That is a considerable amount of bloat, but still enough to run several memory-guzzling apps at the same time.

The Honor Play comes with 64 GB of internal storage, of which just under 51.2 GB (80%) is available for use. That’s enough for over 12,000 photos, or 5.5 hours of 1080p videos, or 2.5 hours of 4K videos.

Camera Performance – Photos

The Honor Play (US Price Check | MY Price Check) has a depth-sensing dual-lens camera, with a 16 MP image sensor paired with f/2.2 lens.  Photos from this camera have a 4:3 aspect ratio, with 4608 × 3456 pixels and an average file size of between 2 MB and 3 MB.

Photos from the wide-angle secondary camera have a 4:3 aspect ratio, with 3264 × 2448 pixels and an average file size of between 6 MB and 7 MB.

Here are 10 high-resolution samples from this 16 MP camera for you to check out. Click on them to load the full-sized photos, which you can also download to examine.

As you can see, the Honor Play’s main camera can take really great photos, with bright, vivid colours. And the software bokeh effect is much more accurate, thanks to its depth-sensing camera. However, note that its dual-lens design requires a greater distance to work, so it won’t be able to focus if the object is very close – less than 10 cm or so.

[adrotate group=”1″]

Camera Performance – Video Recording

Despite its humble price point, the Honor Play (US Price Check | MY Price Check) supports 4K video recording. There is a 10 minute limit, and each clip is also limited to 4 GB in size. It even supports the newer and more efficient H.265 (HEVC) codec.

The Honor Play also supports electronic video stabilisation. However, it is disabled for videos that are recorded in 4K or 1080p at 60 fps.

Video Recording Test #1 : Piano (1080p)

The video stabilisation while recording at 1080p was very good. It’s not quite gimbal-level of stabilisation, but close enough. The Honor Play also showed good control of the highlights – you can see deep into the Padini Concept Store in the background. The recorded audio though was overly bright and lacks dynamic range.

Video Recording Test #2 : Piano (4K)

The 4K resolution is amazing, but there is noticeably less control of the highlights. The video is also jerky, because the Honor Play does not support video stabilisation at this resolution.

Video Recording Test #3 : Street Market (1080p)

The Honor Play’s video stabilisation is very good at this resolution. It felt like it was attached to a gimbal. There was minimal jerkiness even when we panned. There was also good control of the highlights. Very good!

Video Recording Test #4 : Street Market (4K)

Switching to 4K recording disabled video stabilisation, so the end result was a very jerky video. If you really want to record in 4K using the Honor Play, you should do so when it’s attached to a tripod or a gimbal.

As expected, the 12-core ARM Mali-G72 used in the Honor Play (and Honor 10) is fast, flagship-class GPU. The faster Samsung Galaxy S9 (Price Check) actually uses the same GPU, just with 18 cores.

Our Verdict

As Huawei’s sister company, Honor has a reputation of offering similar models with better features at an even more affordable price point. The Honor Play (US Price Check | MY Price Check) is yet another example of the incredible value for money that Honor always offers.

The Honor Play is really an improved version of the HUAWEI nova 3i smartphone. They both have the same 6.3-inch FullView display with a notch, and the same 16 MP + 2 MP depth-sensing dual-lens main camera.

Where they differ though are mainly in five aspects.

  • The HUAWEI nova 3i has a 24 MP + 2 MP depth-sensing dual-lens front camera, while the Honor Play only has a 16 MP front camera.
  • The Honor Play features a flagship-class HiSilicon Kirin 970 SoC, while the nova 3i only uses a mid-range Kirin 710 SoC.
  • The HUAWEI nova 3i comes with 128 GB of internal storage, while the Honor Play only comes with 64 GB of storage.
  • The Honor Play comes with a larger 3,750 mAh battery, while the nova 3i only has a 3,340 mAh battery.

This is why Honor is far from being Huawei’s little brother. They are a key driver of Huawei’s phenomenal growth. By offering devices with even better features at a lower price point, Honor always has a price-performance advantage over its bigger brother.

We earlier reviewed the smaller Honor 10 (Price Check), which is a great smartphone in its own right. It too is great for gaming and comes with a gorgeous Aurora Glass back panel. The Honor Play is, in a way, a larger version of the Honor 10.

[adrotate group=”2″]

Powered by the same flagship-class Kirin 970 SoC, which features a Neural Processing Unit (NPU), it offers a much larger display for greater enjoyment of movies and games. It also comes with a larger battery that gives you longer battery life.

The Honor Play (US Price Check | MY Price Check) also comes with GPU Turbo and “AI Game 4D Experience” with Smart Shock built-in. While both features currently have very limited reach, so don’t expect much from them just yet. However, they are steps in the right direction towards a more immersive gaming experience.

Overall, the Honor Play (US Price Check | MY Price Check) offers a great combination of a large high-resolution display with flagship-class performance and a large battery, in a svelte metal-glass chassis. In fact, when compared to the HUAWEI nova 3i, the Honor Play is obviously the better choice.

This is why we believe the Honor Play deserves our Reviewer’s Choice Award. Congratulations, Honor!

The Top 5 Reasons Why The Honor 10 Is Awesome!

The Honor 10 smartphone is one of the best smartphones Honor ever made. Here are the top 5 reasons why the Honor 10 is amazing!

Reason #1 : Exquisite Aurora Glass

The first thing that strikes you when you pick up the Honor 10 (US Price Check) for the first time is the spectacular Aurora Glass design. Inspired by aerial net sculptures and first introduced in the Honor 8, the Aurora Glass is painstakingly crafted using 15 layers of membrane and glass in a Class 100 dust-free workshop.

Creating the Aurora Glass is a laborious affair that takes twice as long to fabricate, with a high failure rate. But all that hard work and sacrifice is rewarded with the exquisite Aurora Glass design that is literally out-of-this-world.

Reason #2 : Large True Colour Display

You will be amazed by the Honor 10’s large 5.84″ display, with an incredible 86% screen-to-body ratio. Thanks to its bezel-less design, the Honor 10 (US Price Check) is only about the size of a traditional 5.2″ smartphone. You will love how it fits in your hand and pocket. Now you can have your cake and eat it too – a large display in a small package!

You will also be amazed by the display’s true colour capability. The Honor 10 (US Price Check) has an improved FullView 2.0 display with a wide 96% NTSC colour gamut. Once you see your photos and videos appearing exactly as they would in real life, you can never go back!

Reason #3 : AI Camera

The Honor 10 (US Price Check) has an amazing dual-lens AI camera that combines a 16 MP RGB camera with a 24 MP monochrome camera to capture photos with less noise and greater detail.

The RGB sensor captures the colour data; while the monochrome sensor captures the details, with less noise and greater sharpness. Both cameras then combine their sensor data to create a final image that is sharper and with greater detail than would be possible with a single RGB camera

But its photographic capabilities go beyond its dual-lens setup.

The Honor 10 AI Camera can recognise more than 500 photographic scenarios in real-time, identifying the outlines of objects and separating them from the background using the world’s first Semantic Image Segmentation technology.

Semantic Image Segmentation is game-changing because it allows the Honor 10 to literally take apart the picture, and dynamically enhance each element separately for the best results possible. You can take great photos, but the Honor 10 will make them amazing!

Reason #4 : Flagship CPU With AI Capabilities

The Honor 10 (US Price Check) runs on the most powerful platform from HiSilicon – the Kirin 970. This is a flagship-class platform that is fabricated on the latest and most power-efficient 10 nm process.

The Kirin 970 does not only boast a fast octa-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, it supports the latest LPDDR4X memory, and comes with the best-in-class network capabilities – LTE Cat18 for download speeds of up to 1.2 Gbps, with 4×4 MIMO, 5CC carrier aggregation and 256-QAM.

The HiSilicon Kirin 970 also boasts a dedicated NPU (Neural Processing Unit) that delivers 25X the AI processing performance, at half the size! The Kirin 970 NPU is more than twice as fast as the Apple iPhone 8 Plus, and 21X faster than the Samsung Galaxy S8.

The AI processing capability of the Kirin 970 NPU is important because it allows the Honor 10 AI Camera to quickly identify the scene and apply the appropriate settings for the best picture possible. Take this motion capture demo, for example.

The Kirin 970’s ability to identify and predict the motion in the scene allows it to better capture a sharper image. Without the AI predictive capability, it will be virtually impossible to capture a clear image of an object in motion.

Reason #5 : Unbelievable Price!

Flagship smartphones always feature the best technologies possible. However, they are often priced in the stratosphere for the same reason. The Honor 10 (US Price Check) is one of the few exceptions.

Price at only RM 1,599 / ~US$ 399, the Honor 10 (US Price Check) offers flagship capabilities at a fraction of the cost. Can you find another flagship smartphone with the same features at this price point? No, you cannot!

Honor 10 Price & Availability

The Honor 10 is available in three colour options – Phantom Blue, Glacier Grey and Midnight Black – at a low, low price of RM 1,599 / £299 / US$ 403! You can get them from :

The Honor 10 Cameras

The Honor 10 (Price Check) comes with a very high-resolution selfie camera in the front. It has a 24 MP sensor, with a fast f/2.0 lens. That allows it to better handle low-light conditions – important since the front camera does not have any flash.

Its killer feature is the AI Camera at the back. It consists of a 16 MP RGB camera with f/1.8 lens, and a 24 MP monochrome camera. This dual-camera set-up does not only improve depth perception (for more accurate bokeh effects), it also creates sharper, more detailed pictures.

The RGB sensor captures the colour data, while the monochrome sensor captures the details, with less noise and greater sharpness. Both cameras then combine their sensor data to create a final image that is sharper and with greater detail than would be possible with a single RGB camera

Fingerprint Sensor

The Honor 10 (Price Check) uses a front fingerprint sensor. The sensor is completely flat, which looks great because it merges seamlessly with the black bezel. Placing it in the front makes it is great for those who want to use their Honor 10 while it’s attached to a car mount.

The sensor is quite accurate but is rather hard to train, as our setup video will show. It is also relatively slow to detect your fingerprint. For best results, you’ll need to press your finger against the sensor with some force.

[adrotate group=”1″]

No MicroSD Card Slot

The Honor 10 (Price Check) is the first Honor smartphone to do away completely with the microSD card slot. The tray you see below fits up to two nano SIM cards, but there is no microSD card tray.

Honor could have given it a hybrid SIM slot, as Samsung has done with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ smartphones. Instead, they chose not to include a microSD card slot, and give the Honor 10 a large storage capacity of 128 GB.

Display Notch

The Honor 10 (Price Check) has a Full HD+ display, with an aspect ratio of 19:9 and a resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels. It features the display notch made popular by the iPhone X.

Although the notification icons nearest to the notch can appear “cut-off”, the Honor 10 is smart enough to work around the notch. In games and applications that don’t support the notification area, it just displays the main 1080 x 2240 section.

Setting Up The Honor 10

Setting up the Honor 10 (Price Check) is quite easy, and takes no more than 10 minutes if you are setting it up as a new device. We only faced some issues in registering our fingerprints. Honor needs to look at that fingerprint sensor…

Ergonomics

The Honor 10 (Price Check) is an amazingly small smartphone, even though it sports a display that is almost 6″ is size. It is just over 7.1 cm wide, and under 15 cm tall, and weighs just 153 g. This is despite sporting the multilayer Aurora Glass back. It naturally fits very well for those with small hands, and small pockets.

The IPS display is very bright and vivid indoors, and does a decent job outdoors despite not being an AMOLED display. The non-standard 19:9 aspect ratio, while useful in giving you more screen space, will result in some pillarboxing for movies.

Available Memory & Storage

For a mid-range smartphone, the Honor 10 (Price Check) comes with rather large memory and storage capacities. It has 4 GB of RAM, of which 1.62 GB (40.5%) is available for use. That’s plenty to run several memory-guzzling apps at the same time. Interestingly, the Honor 10 has more free memory than the Samsung Galaxy S9!

Honor chose to give the Honor 10 (Price Check) smartphone a TON of storage – 128 GB, with a whopping 115 GB of free space. That is enough to store about 28,750 photos, or 18 hours of 1080p videos, or 8 hours of 4K videos.

Camera Performance – Photos

Honor did not reveal the sensors used in their dual camera system, but the final photos have a 24 MP resolution with the 4:3 aspect ratio, with 5632 x 4224 pixels. Despite the high resolution, Honor appears to use a more efficient (or lossier) compression algorithm, resulting in a file size of between 3 MB and 4 MB.

Here are 8 high-resolution samples for you to check out. Click on them to load the full-sized photos, which you can also download to examine.

[adrotate group=”1″]

Camera Performance – Video Recording

Despite having 24 MP sensors on both front and rear cameras, the Honor 10 (Price Check) is only capable of recording 4K videos from the main AI camera. The 24 MP front camera can only record 720p videos. The 4K video recording by the main camera is also limited to just 10 minutes. This was likely done to prevent sensor overheating.

Video Recording Test #1 : Piano (1080p)

First off – we can see that there is no optical or electrionic image stabilisation, so the video can get very jerky. The audio, while clear, is very thin and overly bright (too much emphasis on treble).

Video Recording Test #2 : Piano (4K)

The 4K resolution is amazing, and there is good control of the highlights. You can see right into the Padini Concept Store. The audio recording is, however, quite a letdown. Honor should try to tone down the emphasis on the high frequencies, and boost the lower frequencies for a more balanced sound.

Video Recording Test #3 : Street Market (1080p)

There is absolutely no image stabilisation, so you get to experience every shake and jolt. Remember – we recorded this in the two-handed mode.

Video Recording Test #4 : Street Market (4K)

When recording at 4K, there appeared to be somewhat more noticeable jerkiness. Overall – not a very pleasant video to watch!

Battery Recharging Performance

The Honor 10 (Price Check) comes with a Huawei SuperCharge fast charger with a power output of 22.5 W. Take a look at how fast it recharged its 3,400 mAh battery.

It took the Honor 10 (Price Check) about 107 minutes (1 hour 47 minutes) to recharge its battery from 20% to 100%. This is 11.5 minutes longer than Samsung Galaxy S9+ (Price Check) with its 18 W fast charger.

This gives it a rather poor battery life : recharging ratio of 5:1, even with a high-powered fast charger. Honor really needs to look into addressing this issue.

While the Kirin 970 was very fast at work applications, it did not do so well in games. Its ARM Mali-G72 GPU only has 12-cores, while the ARM Mali-G72 GPU used in the Samsung Galaxy S9 (Price Check) by 26%, and Galaxy S9+ (Price Check) has 18 cores.

Even so, the Honor 10’s gaming performance was more than decent for a mid-range smartphone. It was slightly faster than the Galaxy S8, which uses the older ARM Mali-G71 GPU (with 20 cores).

Our Verdict

The Honor 10 (Price Check) is a rather impressive smartphone. It is a mid-range smartphone based on the Kirin 970 flagship platform, with 4 GB of RAM and a whopping 128 GB of flash storage. And it looks really good, thanks to its Aurora Glass back, and the almost bezel-less design.

It was no surprise to see the Honor 10 power through our benchmarks like a champ. It was especially fast at work applications, while offering good flagship-class gaming performance. And with so much RAM and storage space, there’s really nothing it cannot handle.

The Honor 10 (Price Check) is also one of the smallest smartphones with a 6″ display. Ergonomically, this is great for those with smaller hands, or small pockets

Its AI camera also worked as advertised, producing really high-quality 24 MP photos. This is yet another flagship feature Honor packed into this mid-range smartphone. However, its video recording capabilities are rather dismal.

[adrotate group=”2″]

The Honor 10 AI camera does not support optical image stabilisation, and for some reason, Honor neglected to enable even electronic image stabilisation. So the video we recorded were shaky, even when recorded with two hands. The recorded audio was also too thin and overly bright.

Finally, it has a rather lacklustre battery life, lasting just under 9 hours in our stress test. While not the worst we have seen, it could be better.

Now, it is easy enough to criticise the Honor 10’s shortcomings, but we have to remember that this is a mid-range smartphone that is 30-40% cheaper than flagship smartphones with equivalent features. That itself is Honor’s chief accomplishment with the Honor 10 (Price Check).

The Honor 10 will be available for sale in Malaysia for a low, low price of RM 1,699 / £318! But if that’s not enough, Honor Malaysia is giving a RM 100 cash back, which means the Honor 10 will cost only RM 1,599 / £299!!!

The honor 8 Pro Smartphone Debuts @ Just RM 1999!

honor Malaysia today introduced the honor 8 Pro premium smartphone. It features a top-of-the-line processor, a long battery life, a 5.7″ Quad HD display and a dual-lens camera – all packed into a chassis that is just under 7 mm thick!

The honor 8 Pro is Geared for Speed

The honor 8 Pro is powered by the Kirin 960 SoC, that promises significantly better performance than its predecessor, the Kirin 950.

  • The Kirin 960 has 8 processor cores – 4 x high-performance ARM Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.4 GHz and 4 x low-power Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.8 GHz – that improve single-core and multi-core performance by 10% and 18% respectively.
  • The ARM Mali-G71 GPU includes support for the cutting-edge Vulkan API, boosting graphics performance by up to 400%.
  • The new EMUI 5.1 system leverages machine learning to learn from your behavior and habits to minimise lag and ensure applications and files load smoothly. For example, if you tend to open an application at a certain time of the day, the honor 8 Pro will be able to anticipate your needs and pre-load the application.

Longer Battery Life

Coupled with advanced power-saving features, the honor 8 Pro’s 4,000 mAh battery provides up to 2 days of regular use, and almost 1.44 days of heavy use. The Smart Power 5.0 technology helps to maximise battery life by automatically identifying and terminating processes with exceptionally high power consumption, as well as minimising power consumed by background applications.

Minimalist Sophistication

The honor 8 Pro boasts an ultra-thin 6.97 mm metal body that is available in navy blue or midnight black colours. Its Quad HD display features a high pixel density of 515 ppi, 16.7 million colours and a 94.5% NTSC color gamut.

The honor 8 Pro also comes VR-ready, with a bundled cardboard viewer and pre-installed Jaunt VR app containing a wealth of video content. Users will also be able to dive into the exhilarating world of Galaxy on Fire 3, the first 3D game to run on the Vulkan interface.

Dual 12 MP Cameras

The honor 8 Pro features a 12 MP dual-lens camera. The two lenses work in tandem to always deliver the perfect shot:

[adrotate group=”2″]

  • the monochrome lens captures a black-and-white image with incredible depth of detail while the RGB lens ensure faithful and vivid color reproduction
  • the camera software then combines the two images together.

The camera supports a wide software aperture range (f/0.95–f/16) to delivers DSLR-like depth of field “bokeh” effects for both photo and video shooting. The cameras also support 4K video recording, which are encoded in the efficient H.265 codec, producing files twice as small as its predecessor.

EMUI 5.1 also introduces Highlights, a new feature co-developed with Go Pro that intelligently organises photos by category and automatically generates video stories that are easily customisable – making sharing memories a breeze.

The 2017 Mobile Legends South East Asia Cup

Marking honor 8 Pro’s exclusive partnership for the 2017 Mobile Legends South East Asia Cup in Malaysia, Mandy Dai, Senior Marketing Director from Moonton said, “I am honoured to announce this exclusive partnership with honor Malaysia and have the honor 8 Pro as the official gaming phone for the tournament which will be used by professional e-sport gamers.
