Biden said America lost Revolutionary War over lack of airports?!

Did President Joe Biden say that America “lost” the Revolutionary War, because it “didn’t have enough airports”?!

Take a look at the viral claim, and find out what the facts really are!

Claim : Biden Said America Lost Revolutionary War Over Lack Of Airports!

On 21 December 2023, Joe Rogan claimed on his show that President Joe Biden said that America “lost” the Revolutionary War because “we didn’t have enough airports”!

During that episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, he argued that recent statements by Joe Biden disqualified him from running for re-election in the 2024 Presidential elections. He claimed that Biden voters were regretting their choice in 2020 to elect Biden, saying “What did I do? What did I choose?“.

His guest, mixed martial arts fighter Bo Nickal then chimed in, “You just can’t listen to an interview [with Biden] where he’s saying some of the things he’s saying, it makes no sense at all.

That was when Joe Rogan claimed that Joe Biden recently said that America “lost” the Revolutionary War because “we didn’t have enough airports”.

Joe Rogan mimicking Joe Biden : One of the reasons why we lost the Revolutionary War… one of the problems in the Revolutionary War was they didn’t have enough airports.

Bo Nickal appeared to agree with him, laughing and saying, “Yeah, what the hell? It’s crazy.

Joe Rogan then continued, “If you had any other job, and you were talking like that, they would go, ‘Hey, you’re done.’

Joe Biden Did Not Say America Lost Revolutionary War Over Lack Of Airports!

This is yet another example of FAKE NEWS created or promoted by American conservatives of the MAGA persuasion, and here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : America Did Won The Revolutionary War

First, let me just point out America did not lose the Revolutionary War against the British. If that happened, there wouldn’t be any United States of America today. It would still be part of the United Kingdom.

The Revolutionary War is also called the American War of Independence for a very good reason – the Americans won their independence from the British.

Interestingly, the clip that was shared on The Joe Rogan Experience did not show Joe Biden saying that America lost the Revolutionary War. Why would Joe Rogan claim that Biden said that America lost its War of Independence against the British. Perhaps he will “clarify” that in a future episode?

Fact #2 : Joe Biden Was Mocking Donald Trump

The video clip that was featured in The Joe Rogan Experience does not show Joe Biden saying that America “lost” the Revolutionary War, or that the American colonies “did not have enough airports”.

The truth is – the video clip shows President Joe Biden mocking former President Donald Trump, who was the one who actually made those claims about airports during the American Revolutionary War!

Fact #3 : Donald Trump Made Airports In Revolutionary War Comments

On 5 July 2019, Donald Trump was giving a speech commemorating the War of Independence, when he claimed that the American Continental Army flew planes and seized airports (from the British) – more than 120 years before airplanes were invented and airports existed!

Donald Trump : The Continental Army suffered a bitter winter of Valley Forge, found glory across the waters of the Delaware and seized victory from Cornwallis of Yorktown.

Our army manned the air, it rammed the ramparts. It took over the airports.

For the record – the Wright brothers made their historic first flight only on December 17, 1903… and the oldest airport in the United States – College Park Airport was established in 1907 to train military pilots. Both events took place more than 120 years after the American Revolutionary War ended on September 3, 1783.

Recommended : Joe Biden Snubbed Xi Jinping At US-China Summit?!

Fact #4 : Joe Biden Statement Was Old + Edited

I should also point out that the viral video clip was edited to make it look like he was saying that the biggest problem America faced in the Revolutionary War was a lack of airports.

The video is also not recent, as Joe Rogan and other people have claimed. Instead, it was taken from his speech mocking Donald Trump during a 2020 campaign rally in Tampa, Florida.

Donald Trump when he thinks of climate change, he says hoax. Well, guess what? Speaking of hoaxes, remember what he said about these increasing violent hurricanes and the frequency? He actually said, maybe we should detonate a nuclear bomb over the Atlantic.

By the way, the same stable genius who said the biggest problem we had in the Revolutionary War is we didn’t have enough airports.

Fact #5 : Joe Rogan Was Corrected On-Air!

Embarrassingly, Joe Rogan got corrected on-air by his own producer, Jamie Vernon, who belatedly stepped in with a fact check after airing the viral edited Joe Biden video clip.

Jamie Vernon : Just for the record…

Joe Rogan : Is that fake?

Jamie Vernon : It’s not fake, but he was referencing Trump saying that. Here is what Trump was saying that in 2019.

Joe Rogan : Ohhh….

Jamie Vernon then played a video clip of Donald Trump claiming that American Continental Army “manned the air” and “took over the airports“.

But instead of admitting he and his guest fucked up on-air, Joe Rogan only laughed and said, “Oh, so he [Donald Trump] fucked up….

Nickal then somehow suggested that it was the fault of the media, saying “That’s the thing about media these days. You gotta look into it.

Is Hungary Prosecuting George Soros For Holocaust?!

Is Hungary preparing to prosecute George Soros for Holocaust atrocities?!

Take a look at the viral claim, and find out what the facts really are!

Claim : Hungary Prepares To Prosecute George Soros For Holocaust Atrocities!

People are sharing a NewsPunch article that claims that the Hungary is preparing to prosecute “lifelong Nazi” George Soros for Holocaust atrocities!

Here is an excerpt from the very long article, so feel free to skip to the next section for the facts!

Hungary Prepares To Prosecute ‘Lifelong Nazi’ George Soros For Holocaust Atrocities

Hungarian prosecutors are preparing charges against 92-year-old Hungarian-American financier George Soros for aiding and abetting the murder of thousands of Hungarians during the Nazi occupation during World War II.

Recommended : Did Western Ambassadors Evacuate Before Turkey Earthquake?!

Truth : Hungary Is Not Prosecuting George Soros For Holocaust Atrocities

This is yet another example of FAKE NEWS created and propagated by NewsPunch, and here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : NewsPunch Is A Fake News Website

Like Real Raw News, NewPunch is a FAKE NEWS website that capitalises on making shocking but fake stories to generate page views and money.

It was founded as Your News Wire in 2014, before being rebranded as NewsPunch in November 2018. A 2017 BuzzFeed report identified NewsPunch as the second-largest source of popular fake news spread on Facebook that year.

Their articles have been regularly debunked as fake news, so you should NEVER share anything from NewsPunch. Here are some of their fake stories that I personally debunked earlier:

Fact #2 : No Evidence Hungary Is Prosecuting George Soros For Any Crime

There is ZERO EVIDENCE that Hungarian prosecutors are preparing to prosecute George Soros for any crime.

NewsPunch certainly offered no evidence to back up its claims that Hungarian prosecutors are preparing to prosecute George Soros for Holocaust atrocities.

The Hungarian government and media certainly made no mention of any legal action against George Soros, an American citizen who lives in New York.

Fact #3 : George Soros Was A Jewish Child During World War 2

The claim that George Soros is a lifelong Nazi who collaborated with them in World War 2 is laughably false.

George Soros (born György Schwarz on August 13, 1930) was only 9 years old when World War 2 broke out in Europe. On top of that, he was a Jew!

To protect themselves from antisemitism, his family changed their name from the German-Jewish name of Schwartz to Soros, which meant “next in line” in Hungarian. His family only survived the war by purchasing documents that declared them as “Christians”.

As a Jewish child, George Soros had to pose as the Christian godson of a Hungarian government official. He would personally witness the confiscation of Jewish property, calling it a very personal experience of evil.

Recommended : Was Joan Rivers Killed For Insulting The Obamas?!

Fact #4 : Tivadar Soros Saved Other Hungarian Jews

It is also ridiculous to claim that George Soros collaborated with Nazis, when his father, Tivadar Soros, was notable for helping to save other Hungarian Jews.

When George Soros was 13 years old, the Jewish Council asked kids like him to hand out deportation notices. His father recognised the list for what it really was, and asked George to warn them.

The Jewish Council asked the little kids to hand out the deportation notices. I was told to go to the Jewish Council. And there I was given these small slips of paper … I took this piece of paper to my father. He instantly recognized it. This was a list of Hungarian Jewish lawyers. He said, ‘You deliver the slips of paper and tell the people that if they report they will be deported.’ I’m not sure to what extent he knew they were going to be gassed. I did what my father said.

George Soros would later call 1944 as “the happiest [year] of his life” because it gave him the opportunity to witness his father’s heroism.

Fact #5 : Nazi Germany Only Occupied Hungary In 1944

The claim that George Soros “knowingly and willfully” collaborated with Nazis, and aided and abetted the murder of Jewish Hungarians in Budapest from September 1942 to January 1943 is easily proven false.

Not only was he a child (as mentioned above), the Nazis only occupied Hungary in March 1944. So he could not possibly have aided the Nazis in killing Jews in Budapest 1-2 years earlier.

Recommended : Are Nazis From Japan Fighting For Ukraine?!

Fact #6 : George Soros Is Vehemently Anti-Nazi

It is ludicrous for people to claim that George Soros is a lifelong Nazi, when he is a Jewish survivor of Nazi occupation of Hungary in World War 2, who personally witnessed other Jews getting taken away to be killed.

Since then, he has been a supporter of progressive and liberal political causes, which he supports through his Open Society Foundations. He has personally influenced the Fall of Communism In Eastern Europe.

He has donated billions on philanthropy promoting democracy and good governance, which makes him unpopular amongst nationalists and populists, who often create and/or spread conspiracy theories about him, including labelling him as a Nazi, amongst other things.

Roman Charity : Why Woman Breastfed Man In Prison!

The painting of a young woman breastfeeding an old man in prison has gone viral.

Take a look at the viral claim and find out what the facts really are!

Viral Claim About Woman Breastfeeding Old Man In Prison

This photo of a classical painting is being shared on WhatsApp, social media platforms like Facebook, and even Reddit, together with this claim:

This painting of a young woman breastfeeding an old man in a prison cell was sold for 30 million Euros. The painting may look perverse but the story behind is from historical records.

The poor man was sentenced to “death by starvation” for stealing a loaf of bread during the reign of Louis XIV in France. The woman was his only daughter and the only visitor to his cell. She was allowed to visit him daily but was frisked thoroughly such that no food was taken in.

When after 4 months the man still survived with no weight loss, the authorities were perplexed and started spying on her in the cell and to their utter astonishment found her to breastfeed her father to the fullest sharing her baby’s milk. The judges then realizing the compassion and love of the woman for her father, pardoned the father and set him free.

This piece of history brings into focus how deep is a woman’s compassion in our daily lives that men often tend to overlook.

Roman Charity : Why Woman Breastfed Man In Prison!

As inspiring as the story is, this is yet another example of FAKE NEWS, and here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : That’s Roman Charity By Jules Joseph Lefebvre

The photo is of an oil painting on canvas called La Charité romaine (Roman Charity) by French painter, Jules Joseph Lefebvre.

Fact #2 : Roman Charity By Lefebvre Was Never Sold

The La Charité romaine (Roman Charity) painting by Jules Lefebvre was never sold for 30 million Euros.

It was purchased by the French government in 1864 for 1,500 francs, and displayed at the Melun Museum in 1865.

The French government later donated the painting to the Melun City Hall at 16 rue Paul-Doumer, where it can be seen in the wedding hall.

In the photo taken by Stephane Asseline in 2003, you can see the words Donné par l’état (Donated by the state) engraved into the frame.

Fact #3 : Roman Charity Is A Story Of Cimon And Pero

The real Roman Charity story is about Cimon who was convicted of a serious but unspecified crime, and sentenced to die of starvation.

Even though the prison guards were instructed not to provide him with water or food, Cimon surprisingly survived for more than a month. He was weak but not close to dying. The claim that he survived for more than FOUR months though is a tall tale.

One day, the guards reportedly discovered that his daughter Pero (some accounts describe her as his wife) had been breastfeeding her father. She had been allowed to visit her father once a day, and was able to feed him with her breast milk, keeping him alive that way.

What happened after that is not known. Some say that Pero’s love for her father convinced the court to pardon and release Cimon. But others claim that she was given a death penalty for what she did.

Fact #4 : There Are Many Roman Charity Paintings

There are actually many paintings showing a young woman breastfeeding an old man in prison, all variations of the Roman Charity story.

These four examples from Peter Paul Rubens (1612), Jan Janssens (1620-25), Dirck Van Baburen (1623) and Pieter van Mol (1640), all predate the Jules Lefebvre painting by over 200 years.

Arguably, the Jules Lefebvre painting of Roman Charity is more famous because it was the first depiction of Pero with a baby.

The original versions of the tale did not mention that she brought her baby to prison while visiting her father. So it isn’t surprising to see that earlier works only showed Pero and Cimon alone.

Fact #5 : Roman Charity Story Predates King Louis XIV

The story that the old man was sentenced to death by starvation for stealing bread during the reign of King Louis XIV is nonsense.

The story of Roman Charity goes way back to the days of Ancient Rome. It was first told in Factotum ac dictum memorabilium (Nine Books of Memorable Acts and Sayings of the Ancient Romans) by Ancient Roman historian Valerius Maximus.

A painting in the Temple of Pietas not only depicted the scene back then, wall paintings and terracotta statutes excavated in Pompeii suggest that it was common in the first century.

As I pointed out in the Fact #4 above, Western artists had already painted Roman Charity hundreds of years before Jules Lefebvre, or King Louis XIV’s reign from 1643 to 1715.

Black Friday Origin : Slaves Sale After Thanksgiving?!

Did the Black Friday shopping phenomenon start with the sale of slaves after the Thanksgiving holiday?

Take a look at the viral claim, and find out what the FACTS really are!

Black Friday Origins : Selling Of Slaves After Thanksgiving?

Photos of slaves being sold in the United States are circulating on WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter as evidence that the term “Black Friday” originated with the practice of selling slaves after the Thanksgiving holiday.

The term “Black Friday” originated with the practice of selling off [sic] slaves on the day after Thanksgiving.

Now, do we really need to embrace this kind of torture? Or we are such foolish, that we don’t even research what is this so-called Black Friday and we become so exciting on something like this?

Truth : Black Friday Nothing To Do With Sale Of Slaves

The truth is – this is yet another example of FAKE NEWS circulating on social media and messaging apps like WhatsApp.

Fact #1 : Black Friday Term Was First Used In 1950s

The earliest known use of the term Black Friday to refer to a particular day after the American Thanksgiving holiday can be traced back to the November 1951 edition of the journal, Factory Management and Maintenance, which referred to the practice of workers calling in sick on the day after Thanksgiving, to get a four-day weekend.

Around the same time (in the 1950s), Philadelphia and Rochester police were also using the terms Black Friday and Black Saturday to describe crowds and traffic congestion at the start of the Christmas shopping season.

Fact #2 : Black Friday Refers To Busiest Shopping Day In America

The term did not catch on until The New York Times referred to Black Friday as “the busiest shopping and traffic day of the year” on 29 November 1975.

It became more popular in the early 1980s, and The Philadelphia Inquirer explained Black Friday in 1981 as the day when retailers would no longer be “in the red”, and would finally start making money.

Since 2005, Black Friday has been the busiest shopping day of the year in the United States.

Fact #3 : Black Friday Had Nothing To Do With Sale Of Slaves

It may seem silly but we have to say it – the term Black Friday has nothing to do with the sale of slaves after Thanksgiving. It doesn’t even make sense!

America’s history with slaves is long and tortured, and extensively covered. Slaves were bought and sold throughout the year, and not on a particular Friday after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Just in case you are wondering – no, there was no discount on slaves being sold right after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Note : We added the FALSE overlay to prevent the pictures from being further abused.

Fact #4 : Slavery Ended In The US In 1865

President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on 1 January, 1863 – effectively making all slaves legally free.

However, it took the end of the American Civil War in 1865, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation throughout the entire United States of America.

On 6 December 1865, Federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce the emancipation. That day is now celebrated as a national holiday in 2021 – the Juneteenth National Independence Day.

Therefore, the poster showing slaves being sold in 1904 at a Black Friday sale in America is categorically false.

US, Canada, Ukraine Voted Against Anti-Nazi Resolution?!

Find out why the US, Canada and Ukraine repeatedly voted against an anti-Nazi resolution in the United Nations!

Claim : US, Canada, Ukraine Voted Against Anti-Nazi Resolution!

Pro-Russia and pro-CCP netizens, as well as the Chinese 50 Cent Army (wumao, 五毛), are claiming that the US, Canada and Ukraine are the only three of four countries to vote against the anti-Nazi resolution in the United Nations.

Here is a recent example, which refers to a 2014 UN Resolution called “Combating glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to fuelling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance“.

Why are the US, Canada, and Ukraine the only three of four countries in the world to vote NO to the UN resolution to combat Nazism and Neo-Nazism? In fact most European countries abstained, while the vast majority of the global south including China, India, Russia voted yes

Note : This photo has often been used as “evidence” that Ukraine and the US are pro-Nazi. The truth is – this is a digitally manipulated photo.

Here’s Why US, Canada, Ukraine Voted Against Anti-Nazi Resolution!

At first glance, it is easy enough to see why pro-Russia and pro-CCP netizens actually believe that the US, Canada and Ukraine are Nazi supporters.

Let’s go through the facts of this UN resolution, and find out why US, Canada and Ukraine voted against an anti-Nazi resolution.

Fact #1 : US, Canada, Ukraine Voted Against Anti-Nazi Resolution

First, let me confirm that the US, Canada and Ukraine did indeed vote No to a 2014 UN resolution called 2014 UN Resolution called “Combating glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to fuelling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance“.

Here was how the voting went :

  • Total voting membership : 193
  • Members voting Yes : 132
  • Members voting No : 4 (US, Canada, Ukraine, Palau)
  • Members abstaining : 51 (including all EU member states)
  • Members who did not vote : 6

Fact #2 : This Is Old News From 2014

This is old news from 2014 that is being resurrected due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Russia calls their invasion of Ukraine a “special operation” to “denazify Ukraine”, and they justified it by claiming that Ukraine is full of Nazis.

Hence, pro-Russia and pro-CCP groups, including the Chinese 50 Cent Army (wumao, 五毛), have been promoting this story as “evidence” that the US, Canada and Ukraine are pro-Nazi.

Read more : Did Russia Shoot Down NATO Jets + Helicopters In Ukraine?!

Fact #3 : Resolution Was Presented By Russia To Justify Annexation Of Crimea

The 2014 UN resolution was presented by Russia as a way to justify its annexation of Crimea in March 2014.

That was why Ukraine joined the US and Canada in voting against the resolution. All European Union member states abstained en masse from the resolution for the same reason.

Speaking to European Voice before the vote, Lithuania’s foreign minister, Linas Linkevičius, said that “no one should doubt that we are condemning fascism”, but, he continued, “under cover of this condemnation, Russia is pursuing its own agenda”.

It was not that those countries support Nazism or facism. It’s because they do not agree that Russia should use it as a pretext to attack other countries.

Fact #4 : Ukraine First Voted No In 2014

This resolution has actually been presented on a yearly basis since 1980, but Ukraine only started to vote no in 2014, after Russia annexed Crimea.

Their official reason for Ukraine voting No though was because the document did not reflect the crimes of the Stalin regime :

Andrey Tsimbalyuk, Ukraine’s Representative in the UN, said in 2014: “Until Stalinism and neo-Stalinism are judged with the same degree, as Nazism, neo-Nazism and other forms of intolerance, Ukraine will not be able to support this document.”

This is why pro-Russia and pro-CCP netizens only mention the 2014 resolution, but not the earlier versions. That was the first time Ukraine voted against the resolution.

Did Russian annexation of Crimea turn Ukrainians into Nazis? Or did they simply dislike Russia’s use of Nazism to justify their illegal invasion of Ukraine?

Read more : What Should China Worry About Russia-Ukraine War?

Fact #5 : US Voted No To Defend Freedom Of Speech

Thanks to a CCP supporter, Wan Chun Hong, I confirm that United States has voted against each instance of this resolution as far back as 1985.

The United States also abstained from voting for this resolution in the 1980 resolution, together with 17 other countries.

The US reason for voting against the resolution was to defend the freedom of speech. As Nicholas Hill, the Deputy US Representative for ECOSOC explained on November 12, 2021 :

The United States Supreme Court has consistently affirmed the constitutional right to freedom of speech and the rights of peaceful assembly and association, including by avowed Nazis, whose hatred and xenophobia are vile and widely scorned by the American people. We nevertheless firmly defend the constitutional rights of those who exercise their fundamental freedoms to combat intolerance and express strong opposition to the odious Nazi creed and others that espouse similar hatreds.

For these reasons, the United States has voted against each new version of this resolution since 2005 and is, again, compelled to vote “No” on this resolution, and calls on other States to do the same.

Nazism is also far less of a problem today than white nationalism, or Russian and Chinese aggression against their neighbours.

Read more : Chinese J-16 Fighter Fired Flares, Chaff At Australian Plane!
Read more : Did Chinese Jamming Attacks Force US Navy To Withdraw?!

Fact #6 : Israel Voted No At Least Once

CCP supporter, Wan Chun Hong, intended to use the 1985 UN Resolution as evidence that Western countries were really supporters of Nazism.

There is one problem though – two countries voted No against the measure called “Measures to be taken against Nazi, Fascist and neo-Fascist activities and all other forms of totalitarian ideologies and practices based on racial intolerance, hatred and terror“.

One was the United States. The other was Israel. Does Israel voting against that anti-Nazi resolution mean that the Israelis are also pro-Nazis, like the United States?

CCP supporters would like us to believe that, because they think we are idiots.

Fact #7 : Russia Is Using Resolution To Justify Attacks On Neighbours

Russia has been using this resolution to justify its attacks on its neighbours, as Nicholas Hill also pointed out in the same November 12, 2021 explanation :

[T]he United States must once again express opposition to this resolution, a document most notable for its thinly veiled attempts to legitimize Russian disinformation campaigns denigrating neighboring nations and promoting the distorted Soviet narrative of much of contemporary European history, using the cynical guise of halting Nazi glorification.

Here is a list of territories that Russia has occupied so far :

  • Transnistria : seized from Moldova in 1992
  • Abkhazia and South Ossetia : seized from Georgia in 2008
  • Crimea, and parts of Donetsk and Luhansk : seized from Ukraine in 2014
  • Parts of Donetsk and all of Luhansk : seized from Ukraine in 2022 (ongoing)

This is really nothing more than Russian propaganda to justify their invasions of other countries, reminiscent of what Nazi Germany did in the 1930s.

Russian and Chinese propaganda have also tried to introduce fake claims like NATO had been planning to invade Russia from Ukraine, or that they created COVID-19 in Ukrainian biological labs.

Read more : Secret NATO Headquarters Under Azovstal Exposed?!
Read more : Did US Biolabs In Ukraine Create COVID-19 Virus?!

Fact #8 : Russia Colluded With Nazi Germany In World War 2

Russian and Chinese propaganda avoid mentioning how the Soviet Union colluded with Nazi Germany, and was responsible (in part) for starting World War 2 in Europe.

The fascist ideology of Nazi Germany did not gel well with the communist ideology of the Soviet Union, which was why relations between the two countries deteriorated once Hitler came into power.

But the Soviet Union warmed up to the Nazis, and actively colluded with Nazi Germany before and during World War 2… up until Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union in Operation Barbarossa.

  • Multiple commercial agreements provided Nazi Germany with desperately needed raw materials, including oil.
  • The Soviet Union invaded Poland in partnership with Nazi Germany.
  • The Soviet Union invaded Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia, just after Germany invaded France, the Netherlands and Belgium.
  • The Soviet Union tried to join the Axis Pact, which consisted of Nazi Germany, Japan and Italy.

The Soviet Union provided Nazi Germany with the means to avoid the economic blockade, and continue their invasion of Europe.

If Hitler did not make the mistake of invading the Soviet Union, it was likely that Europe would have been divided between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany as per the infamous Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.

In these pictures from 23 August 1939, you can see Soviet Foreign Minister, Vyacheslav Molotov, signing the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact; and Stalin shaking hands with German Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop, after signing the pact.

Vyacheslav Molotov signs the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact (left), Stalin shaking hands with Ribbentrop after signing the pact (right)

Fact #9 : United States Was Anti-Nazi Long Before Russia

Russian and Chinese propaganda always skim over the inconvenient fact that the United States was anti-Nazi long before Russia.

While Russia was actively colluding with Nazis, and partnering with Nazi Germany in dividing up Central Europe; the United States not only prepared for war against Germany, it shared critical technology with Britain and provided them with tremendous amounts of armaments through the Lend-Lease Act.

Russia would also end up benefiting from the US Lend-Lease Act, which saw the US producing and shipping US$50.1 billion worth of military equipment and supplies (equivalent to US$690 billion in 2020) to Allies.

Fact #10 : United States Prevented Soviet Union’s Collapse

Russian and Chinese propaganda also (intentionally?) forget to point out that it was the United States that helped to prevent the Soviet Union’s collapse during the German invasion in 1941.

It took the German armed forces less than 6 months to advance within 20 miles of the Kremlin. The complete capitulation of Russia was stopped, in part, by a prodigious amount of arms and equipment sent by the United States :

  • 400,000 jeeps & trucks
  • 14,000 airplanes
  • 8,000 tractors
  • 13,000 tanks
  • 1.5 million blankets
  • 15 million pairs of army boots
  • 107,000 tons of cotton
  • 2.7 million tons of petrol products
  • 4.5 million tons of food

Reminiscent of the military aid that Ukraine is now receiving from the United States and other members of NATO, the US Lend-Lease Act supplied the Soviet Union with $11.3 billion ($180 billion in 2020 currency) worth of aid from 1941 to 1945.

Without such large amounts of aid from the United States, it was likely that Russia would today be part of a Greater Nazi Germany, or at least a vassal state of Nazi Germany.

Stalin himself acknowledged the value of American support to his aide and future USSR leader, Nikita Khrushchev, who said :

I would like to tell about some remarks Stalin made and repeated several times when we were “discussing freely” among ourselves. He stated bluntly that if the United States had not helped us, we would not have won the war. If we had had to fight Nazi Germany one on one, we could not have stood up against Germany’s pressure, and we would have lost the war.

We should note that the US helped Russia, even though the US was at that time a neutral country, and Russia was responsible for kicking off World War 2 by colluding with Nazi Germany to invade Central European countries.

Did NATO Promise Russia Never To Expand East?!

Did NATO break their promise to Russia, never to expand a single inch east?

Take a look at the claim, and find out what the facts really are!

Claim : NATO Promised Not To Expand A Single Inch East!

Did NATO promise Russia not to expand a single inch east, into former Warsaw Pact countries like Poland, or former Soviet Union countries like Ukraine?!

Did NATO break that promise? That is what Russian President Vladimir Putin has been claiming since 2007, and is the basis for why he chose to attack Ukraine.

People have also been sharing a video of Putin making those claims, to justify the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Truth : NATO Never Promised Not To Expand A Single Inch East!

This is an old Vladimir Putin fabrication that he keeps repeating to justify his military actions, even though it is complete nonsense, and has been debunked many times.

Fact #1 : Warsaw Pact + Soviet Union Dissolved In 1991

For context, I need to point out that both the Warsaw Pact military alliance, and the Soviet Union, were dissolved way back in 1991.

From 1989 to 1991, Communist governments in Eastern Europe were falling like ninepins, getting overthrown by public discontent.

On 25 February 1991, the remaining Warsaw Pact countries met in Hungary and agreed to disband the military alliance.

The Warsaw Pact alliance was formally dissolved on 1 July 1991 by Czechoslovak President Václav Havel in Prague.

That was followed by the dissolution of the Soviet Union (USSR) on 8 December 1991, when the presidents of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus signed the Belavezha Accords.

Fact #2 : Vladimir Putin First Made That Claim In 2007

The dissolution of both Warsaw Pact and the Soviet Union happened in 1991, but Russian President Vladimir Putin only started making this claim in 2007.

In his February 2007 speech to the 43rd Munich Security Conference, he claimed that the West violated their “guarantees” :

And we have the right to ask: against whom is this [NATO] expansion intended? And what happened to the assurances our Western partners made after the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact?

… I would like to quote the speech of NATO General Secretary Mr. Woerner in Brussels on 17 May 1990. He said at the time that: ‘the fact that we are ready not to place a NATO army outside of German territory gives the Soviet Union a firm security guarantee.” Where are these guarantees?

Fact #3 : Annexation Of Crimea Was Based On That Claim

Putin then used the same false claim to justify Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea :

… they [Western leaders] have lied to us many times, made decisions behind our backs, placed before us an accomplished fact.

This happened with NATO’s expansion to the east, as well as the deployment of military infrastructure at our borders.

Fact #4 : NATO Never Promised Not To Expand Eastwards

Now that you have some context, here’s the clincher – NATO never promised Russia, or the former Soviet Union, not to expand eastwards.

Despite Putin’s claims, no Western leader ever made such guarantees to either Russia, or the former Soviet Union.

Fact #5 : NATO Only Agreed To Restrictions On Former GDR

In 1990, six countries – East and West Germany, the United States, the Soviet Union, Britain and France – held discussions on the reunification of Germany.

The Germans, Americans, British and French agreed that there would be “no deployment of non-German NATO forces on the territory of the former GDR (East Germany)“.

That agreement was incorporated in Article 5 of the Treaty on the Final Settlement with Respect to Germany, that was signed on 12 September 1990 by the six countries :

  1. Until Soviet forces had completed their withdrawal from the former GDR, only German territorial defense units not integrated into NATO would be deployed in that territory.
  2. There would be no increase in the numbers of troops or equipment of U.S., British and French forces stationed in Berlin.
  3. Once Soviet forces had withdrawn, German forces assigned to NATO could be deployed in the former GDR, but foreign forces and nuclear weapons systems would not be deployed there.

Fact #6 : USSR Did Not Raise Question Of NATO Expansion

The Soviet Union did not raise any questions about the potential expansion of NATO to the east, because no one at that time thought that was a serious possibility.

Fact #7 : Gorbachev Confirmed NATO Kept Its Promise

Mikhail Gorbachev, the General Secretary of the Soviet Union at that time, confirmed in a 2014 interview that NATO expansion was never discussed, or brought up in those years.

He also stressed that any promise not to “move one inch further east” was made in reference to the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany), and that promise was kept.

RBTH : One of the key issues that has arisen in connection with the events in Ukraine is NATO expansion into the East. Do you get the feeling that your Western partners lied to you when they were developing their future plans in Eastern Europe? Why didn’t you insist that the promises made to you – particularly U.S. Secretary of State James Baker’s promise that NATO would not expand into the East – be legally encoded? I will quote Baker: “NATO will not move one inch further east.”

Gorbachev : The topic of “NATO expansion” was not discussed at all, and it wasn’t brought up in those years. I say this with full responsibility. Not a single Eastern European country raised the issue, not even after the Warsaw Pact ceased to exist in 1991. Western leaders didn’t bring it up, either.

Another issue we brought up was discussed: making sure that NATO’s military structures would not advance and that additional armed forces from the alliance would not be deployed on the territory of the then-GDR after German reunification. Baker’s statement, mentioned in your question, was made in that context. Kohl and [German Vice Chancellor Hans-Dietrich] Genscher talked about it.

It has been observed all these years. So don’t portray Gorbachev and the then-Soviet authorities as naïve people who were wrapped around the West’s finger. If there was naïveté, it was later, when the issue arose. Russia at first did not object.

Fact #8 : Boris Yeltsin Was Not Against NATO Expansion

The first President of the Russian Federation, Boris Yeltsin, was quite clear that NATO’s expansion was not a security threat to Russia.

In August 1993, he told Polish President Lech Wałęsa that :

Russia does not oppose Poland’s membership in NATO and does not perceive its membership in NATO as a threat to Russia.

Then in September 1993, he wrote a letter to then US President Bill Clinton, stating that :

Any possible integration of east European countries into NATO will not automatically lead to the alliance somehow turning against Russia.

Fact #9 : Those Countries Chose To Join NATO

Those former Warsaw Pact and Soviet Union countries chose to join NATO, instead of the Russian-led CTSO (Collective Security Treaty Organisation).

They were not coerced into joining NATO, and the move was widely popular with their citizens.

  • Macedonia : 94% voters supported joining NATO
  • Hungary : 85% voters supported joining NATO
  • Georgia : 77% voters supported joining NATO
  • Slovenia : 66% voters supported joining NATO

Fact #10 : Russian Aggression Increased Support For NATO

Russian aggression in recent years have had the counterproductive effect of increasing support for NATO in once-neutral countries.

For example, Finland has assiduously tried to remain neutral, but as Russia ratcheted up threats on Ukraine, Prime Minister Sanna Marin said that there is a real possibility Finland will join NATO.

Sweden also saw a surge in support for NATO membership, after Russian annexation of Crimea, and the threats against Ukraine.

Fact #11 : Vladimir Putin Once Wanted Russia To Join NATO

Interestingly, both Mikhail Gorbachev and Vladimir Putin floated the idea of Russian joining NATO.

While negotiating the reunification of Germany in 1990, Gorbachev told US Secretary of State James Baker :

You say that NATO is not directed against us, that it is simply a security structure that is adapting to new realities … therefore, we propose to join NATO.”

Vladimir Putin himself publicly revealed on Russian television, that he floated the possibility of Russia joining NATO, when US President Bill Clinton visited Moscow in 2000 – watch 2:24 of this video.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen from 2009 to 2014 also confirmed that Putin made many statements suggesting that he was favourable to the idea of Russian joining NATO, to which he said :

Once Russia can show it is upholding democracy and human rights, NATO can seriously consider its membership.
