Malaysia Transport Minister Anthony Loke just announced a lorry ban, and that seven major offences will be non-compoundable this Chinese New Year!

 

CNY 2023 : Traffic Offenders Will Be Sent To Court!

On Wednesday, 17 January 2023, the Transport Minister of Malaysia, Anthony Loke, announced that seven traffic offences will be non-compoundable throughout the Chinese New Year festive season.

Motorists who commit these seven offences will no longer be allowed to just pay a fine, but will instead be referred to the courts.

  • Cutting queue
  • Overtaking on double lines
  • Running the red light
  • Driving over the speed limit
  • Using mobile phones while driving
  • Not wearing a seat belt or helmet
  • Driving on the emergency lane

The seven major traffic offenses are cutting queue, overtaking on double lines, disobeying the red light signal, driving over the speed limit, use of mobile phones while driving, not wearing a seat belt or helmet and driving on the emergency lane.

There will be no compound issues for these offences. Offenders will be referred to court.

To ensure stricter enforcement this year, about 2,000 JPJ enforcement officers will be deployed this Chinese New Year to reduce accidents and deaths.

CNY 2023 : Lorries + Heavy Vehicles Banned!

He also announced that lorries and other heavy vehicles will be banned from the roads during the Chinese New Year festive season to reduce traffic congestion. The ban on heavy vehicles will last four days:

  • two days from January 20 to 21
  • two days from January 24 to 25

This prohibition is intended to avoid the risk of road accidents due to mixed traffic flow between heavy vehicles and light vehicles on the road, highways, apart from avoiding traffic jams.

These viral messages have been circulating on SMS, WhatsApp and Facebook since early January 2021, but keep getting reposted every holiday season.

The North-South Expressway PLUS starts today, and police officers will check every day in the evening~ The passengers in the back seat with no seat belt, will be fined RM300 per person, RM600 for two people.

👉 Please do update friends & family members to be alert & pay attention in this matter.
👉 Just now a lot of cars have been issued with fines.
👉 Please notify everyone going out to remember to wear a seat belt at the back seat.

Just received and send.

南北高速 PLUS 今天开工，警察每天晚上都会检查～后排座位上的乘客没有系安全带，将被罚款。每人 300 令吉，两个人 RM600“.

The North-South Expressway PLUS starting today, PDRM will check vehicles~ Passengers in the rear seats who are not wearing seat belts will be fined. RM300 per person, RM600 for two persons.

 

The Truth : There Is No RM300 Seat Belt Fine

The truth is there is no RM300 fine for rear passengers who are caught not wearing a seat belt.

Fact #1 : JSPT Refuted RM300 Seat Belt Fine Claim

The Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) refuted the claim that they would be checking cars travelling on the PLUS North-South Expressway in the evenings, and issuing a RM300 fine for those caught not wearing a seat belt at the back.

The JSPT Deputy Director SAC Datuk Mohd Nadzri Hussain said, “We at JSPT would like to advise all road users to continue complying with the laws and regulations to ensure the safety of every road user.”

“In addition, we would also like to urge the public to stop spreading fake information and to always ensure the validity of any viral information shared on social media sites.”

Fact #2 : Rear Seat Belt Mandatory Since 1 January 2009

It has been mandatory in Malaysia to wear a seat belt while seated in the back seat of a vehicle since 1 January 2009, except for :

  • old vehicles registered before 1 January 1995
  • vehicles registered on or after 1 January 1995, but lack rear anchorage points
  • vehicles that seat more than 8 passengers (not including driver)
  • good vehicles with carrying load of more than 3.5 tonnes

Fact #3 : Seat Belt Fine Is Way More Than RM300

Any driver or passengers, whether seated in the front or rear, caught not wearing a seat belt will be subject to :

  • a fine of up to RM 2,000, and / or
  • a prison sentence of up to 1 year

As you can see – that’s a LOT higher than the RM300 fine in the viral messages.

Fact #4 : RM300 Seat Belt Fine “Offer” Ended In 2009

The RM300 seat belt fine was actually a discounted offer for a 6-month introductory period when the seat belt law came into effect.

From 1 January until 30 June 2009 – the police and JPJ only issued a reduced RM300 fine to those who were caught no wearing a seat belt.

That “introductory fine” had long expired, so drivers are now subject to the much higher penalties.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, just announced that there will be no highway tolls on January 20 to 21 for Chinese New Year 2023!

 

CNY 2023 : No Highway Tolls On January 20-21!

On Wednesday, 18 January 2023, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, announced that there will be no highway tolls on January 20 to 21 in conjunction with Chinese New Year 2023!

In a short public announcement, he said that the Minister of Transport and the Minister of Works took the initiative to discuss the matter with the highway concessionaires across Malaysia, and they agreed not to impose any highway tolls for two days.

The toll-free travel will apply to all types of vehicles travelling on all highways in Malaysia. The toll-free period will begin at 12:01 AM on January 20, and end at midnight on January 21, 2023.

The expected financial implication of these two days of toll-free travel is estimated to be about RM40 million (US$9.2 million).

The Minister of Works and the Minister of Transport took the initiative to discuss with the concessionaires, who agreed to eliminate the toll charges for the 20th and 21st (of January).

We hope that by waiving the toll charges for the two days, it will allow all Malaysians to enjoy travels during the Chinese New Year. My advice to road users is to obey the law and be safe on the road.

But please be warned that during the Chinese New Year festive season, seven traffic offences will be non-compoundable, and will be referred to the courts.

GE15 : No Toll + Public Holidays On November 18, 19!

On Monday, 14 November 2022, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Ismail Sabri, announced that November 18 and 19 will be public holidays, to allow Malaysians to travel home to vote in the 15th General Election (GE15).

Saturday, November 19, was declared a public holiday as some private companies operate on Saturdays, and this would free their employees to vote in the general election.

In addition, private vehicles travelling on highways will not have to pay toll charges on those two days – November 18 and 19, 2022.

The free toll will apply to highways provided by 30 concessionaires, and start from 12:01 AM on November 18, and end on 11:59 PM on November 19.

I know many have been waiting for the announcement and I hereby announce a public holiday for November 18 and 19.

We want to make sure Malaysians can exercise their rights as clearly stipulated in the Federal Constitution. No one can prevent a citizen from exercising their right to vote

The state governments of Negeri Sembilan, Penang and Selangor had earlier declared November 18 as a public holiday. So this declaration by the Prime Minister ensures that all Malaysians will have sufficient time to travel back to vote.

Phase 1 of the SUKE highway is now fully operational, and here are its toll rates!

 

SUKE Highway Toll Rates, Starting October 15!

The Sungai Besi-Ulu Kelang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) is no longer free for public use.

SUKE is now fully operational, with motorists charged RM2.30 at the Bukit Teratai and Ampang toll plazas for Class 1 vehicles.

That means motorists will pay RM4.60 to travel from the Phase 1 stretch from the Cheras-Kajang Interchange to Bukit Antarabangsa.

Once the third toll plaza at Alam Damai is open, and if it also applies the same RM2.30 toll rate, then it will cost Class 1 motorists a total of RM6.90 to travel the full length of the SUKE highway in either direction.

These toll rates officially take effect at 12:01 AM on Saturday, October 15, 2022:

SUKE Highway : Launched In September, Free For 1 Month!

SUKE was officially launched on September 16, 2022, with Phase 1 made free to use for one month.

The 16.6 kilometre stretch of Phase 1 of the SUKE highway runs from the Cheras-Kajang Interchange to Bukit Antarabangsa. The subsequent stretch from Sri Petaling and KESAS Highway to Cheras-Kajang will open at a later date.

SUKE will have three toll plazas – Alam Damai, Bukit Teratai and Ampang, of which only the Bukit Teratai and Ampang toll plazas are open.

Once fully completed, SUKE will have 14 interchanges in total – Sri Petaling, Sungai Besi, Alam Damai, Cheras-Kajang, Cheras-Hartamas, Bukit Teratai, Tasik Tambahan, Permai, Kosas, Pekan Ampang, Ampang Point, Ulu Kelang, Hillview, and Bukit Antarabangsa.

SUKE is notable for featuring Malaysia’s first helicoidal ramp – the Cheras-Kajang Expressway (CKE) connects to SUKE through two spiral loops.

Tragically, it was also involved in an accident that killed three people during its construction.

DASH Highway Officially Open, FREE Until Nov 30!

The DASH highway has finally opened, and it is FREE to use until November 30, 2022!

 

DASH Highway Officially Open On October 14!

After six long years, the Damansara-Shah Alam Elevated Expressway (DASH) is finally open for public use!

Stretching 20.1 kilometres, DASH connects Puncak Perdana to Penchala, connecting the eastern and western townships in the Klang Valley at a cost of RM4.2 billion.

DASH highway has a 3-lane, dual-carriageway design, with each lane 3.5 metres wide, and a 3 metre-wide emergency lane.

Here are the DASH highway toll plazas and interchanges:

  • Puncak Perdana
  • Alam Suria
  • Denai Alam
  • Kampung Mealy Subang
  • Pinggiran Subang
  • Subang Dua
  • Subang Airport
  • RRIM (Kwasa Damansara)
  • Surian
  • Seksyen 5 Kota Damansara
  • Sunway Damansara
  • Penchala

It will be monitored by 37 closed-circuit cameras, with 30 vehicle incident detection systems (VIDS). There will also be 18 emergency telephone booths, 10 variable message signs (VMS), as well as 2,441 LED street lights.

 

DASH Highway FREE To Use Until November 30!

DASH has a concession period of 55 years, lasting from December 25, 2014 until December 24, 2069.

Its toll rates have not been announced, but DASH will be FREE for public use from 12:01 AM, October 14 until November 30, 2022!

The DASH highway is expected to eventually serve an average of 50,000 daily users, and cut the 90-minute commute between Puncak Perdana to Penchala to just 30 minutes.

DASH is also expected to relieve traffic along Persiaran Mokhtar Dahari by 39%, Jalan Sungai Buloh by 33% and Persiaran Surian by 43%.

Toll fares for six major Klang Valley highways will be reduced this month, and next year, in what appears to be a GE15 election sweetener!

 

Toll Fares Reduced For Six Klang Valley Highways!

On Thursday, October 13, 2022, the caretaker Prime Minister of Malaysia, Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced a toll fare reduction for six major Klang Valley highways.

The toll fares for these four highways will be reduced on Thursday, October 20, 2022:

  • Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH)
  • Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE)
  • Kemuning-Shah Alam Highway (LKSA)
  • Kajang Dispersal Link Expressway (SILK)

The toll fares for these two highways will be reduced on Sunday, January 1, 2023:

  • Kajang-Seremban Highway (LEKAS)
  • Besraya Highway

According to Ismail Sabri, the decision to reduce the toll fares for the first four highways was made in a Cabinet meeting on May 18, while the decision to reduce the toll fares for the last two highways was made on June 1.

Parliament was dissolved on October 10, paving the way for the GE15 general elections within 60 days. The fact that this decision was only announced after Parliament dissolution can be seen as an election sweetener.

Ismail Sabri also announced that the government agreed on March 4 to:

  • widen the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway (KLK) and add a new lane from the Gombak toll plaza to the Bentong Toll Plaza, to reduce traffic jams,
  • construct a new tunnelled road at Genting Sempah to accommodate higher traffic and reduce congestion
  • initiate flood mitigation works on the East Coast Expressway Phase 1

All these improvement works took the restructuring of toll rates into account, with supplementary concession agreements being finalised.

Through this latest restructuring, the government has saved approximately RM8.8 billion in compensation that should have been paid to the concessionaires involved. Additionally, highway users can enjoy lower toll rates to ease the cost of living.

TnG eWallet Back Online After Going Down For Over 8 Hours!

All TnG eWallet services are finally back online, after going down for over 8 hours!

Here is everything you need to know!

 

TnG eWallet Down Earlier : No Payments Or Transfers!

At around 1 PM today, the TnG eWallet platform went down, preventing users from making payments or even money transfers.

One of our readers, Kent Ng, shared with me the error messages he received in the TnG eWallet app.

When he tried to transfer money, he received a Connection Time Out error. He couldn’t even pay for parking using TnG eWallet!

Initially, TNG Digital said that RFID transactions were affected, but a few hours later, they said that RFID can still be used, but you are limited to the balance in your TnG eWallet.

The automatic reload feature in the TnG eWallet is still down, so you cannot use RFID to go through toll booths if there is insufficient balance in your eWallet.

Please check your TnG eWallet balance, and make sure you have enough for the toll. Otherwise, please avoid using the TnG RFID lanes at toll booths until this issue is resolved.

You will have to switch to the Touch ‘n Go card, with or without SmartTAG, to pay at toll booths. Please make sure you have sufficient balance in your TnG card.

 

TnG eWallet Back Online After Going Down For Over 8 Hours!

After netizens complained about not being able to make payments, TNG Digital posted a short statement that they are currently working on a solution.

We understand you’re experiencing a service interruption in your eWallet at the moment & may not be able to perform payments including RFID & PayDirect transactions. 🚫

Rest assured that we are currently rectifying this matter & will update you accordingly, as soon as it is back online. 🧐

We apologise for the inconvenience caused. Thank you for your kind patience & understanding. 🙏

The Touch ‘n Go eWallet team. 💙

About six hours later, they were still not able to restore payments. But the good news is that they say that TNG RFID will work at highway toll booths, as long as you have sufficient balance in your eWallet.

Touch ‘n Go Wallet is currently experiencing a technical difficulty and as such we are experiencing a disruption of all Touch ‘n Go Wallet services.

Touch ‘n Go cards and RFID can still be used in highways, transit and parking if you have sufficient balance.

You can reload all your Touch ‘n Go cards at physical reload points as usual.

We are working to restore our services as soon as possible.

At 9:35 PM – after over 8 hours of downtime – TNG Digital finally announced that all Touch ‘n Go eWallet are finally up and running!

Touch ‘n Go Wallet and its services are up and running.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused earlier and thank you for your kind patients.

They however noticeably did not reveal what happened to their platform, or explain why it took them so long to get it back online again.

We can only hope that they learned from this incident, and will put in place measures to prevent it from happening again…

Truth : PDRM Did Not Install CCTV Cameras At Any Toll Booth!

This is another example of FAKE NEWS circulating on WhatsApp, and here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : Highway Operators Installed Those CCTVs

Highway operators like PLUS install CCTVs at their toll booths to monitor operations, and safety issues. As they explained in 2018 :

Our staff monitor the situation at all the toll booths from the camera recording just in case motorists need assistance at the toll lane.

Fact #2 : PLUS Denied The Claim

PLUS Expressways Berhad – the largest highway concessionaire in Malaysia confirmed in 2018 that PDRM is not using their CCTV cameras to catch traffic offenders :

The CCTVs are not being used to catch traffic offender.

The CCTV recordings may be shared with the PDRM in the cases of accidents, but otherwise, highway operators do not share them with the police.

Fact #3 : There Are CCTVs All Along Highways

CCTV cameras are not just installed at toll booths. They are actually installed at many points along highways in Malaysia.

PLUS, for example, installed 2,000 CCTV cameras along their highways. You can even view some of those CCTV feeds using the PLUS app!

Fact #4 : This Hoax Has Been Circulating Since 2017

This voice message started circulating in August 2017, and has been resurrected several times in the past few years. It was fake in 2017, and it remains fake today, in 2022.

Fact #5 : PDRM Can Catch You At Any Time

Police officers can catch traffic offenders at any time. They do not have to rely on toll booth cameras.

Even though this is a hoax, you should always wear a seatbelt, and you should never use your mobile phone while driving.

On 25 April 2022, the government of Malaysia announced that they came to an agreement with 30 highway concessionaires to offer a 30% to 100% discount on highway toll charges during the 2022 Hari Raya Aidilfitri holiday!

The 30% to 100% discount will only apply to all vehicle classes, on these dates and times :

  • From 12:01 AM on Saturday, 30 April 2022 until 11:59 PM on Sunday, 1 May 2022
  • From 12:01 AM on Saturday, 7 May 2022 until 11:59 PM on Sunday, 8 May 2022

Please note that there is no toll discount from 2 May until 6 May 2022.

Malaysia + Singapore To Allow Land Travel On 1 April 2022!

On 24 March 2022, the governments of Malaysia and Singapore announced that they will reopen their common land border on 1 April 2022!

Start 1 April 2022, all fully-vaccinated travellers will be allowed to cross from Malaysia to Singapore, and vice versa, without the need to

  • apply for entry approval
  • under quarantine
  • take a pre-departure test
  • take an on-arrival test

This travel liberalisation will apply to all travellers, regardless of nationality and the medium of transportation.

This announcement will restore land travel between Malaysia and Singapore to how it was pre-pandemic, which will greatly boost trade and tourism.

Many Malaysians and Singaporeans will also be able to meet up with friends and family members in the other country.

1 Week Toll-Free Travel Between Singapore + Malaysia!

To kickstart the reopening of the land border, Malaysia will offer toll-free travel to and from Singapore for one week!

From 1 April until 7 April 2022, the toll fee will be waived on all vehicles travelling via the Johor Causeway (Sultan Iskandar) and the Second Link (Tanjung Kupang).

This toll fee waiver are for Malaysian citizens, who are Touch ‘n Go and SmartTag users, travelling in both directions.

This toll fee waiver is in addition to the Road Charge waiver for Singapore-registered vehicles entering Malaysia at both the Johor Causeway and the Second Link.

PLUS Highway estimates that at least 42,000 vehicles will enter Malaysia through the both locations every day. This toll fee waiver is estimated to benefit over 300,000 cross-border journeys between Malaysia and Singapore.

EMCO Road Closure + Roadblocks In Petaling Jaya!

On 4 July 2021, the Petaling Jaya district police chief, ACP Mohamad Fakhrudin bin Abdul Hamid announced that the police will close a road in Petaling Jaya tonight to enforce EMCO travel restrictions.

  • Jalan 5/46 Gasing Indah

Drivers will need to use one of these alternative roads :

  • New Pantai Expressway (NPE)
  • Jalan Pantai

The police will continue to maintain the six EMCO roadblocks they set up yesterday, to enforce the EMCO travel restrictions.

DASH Highway Scaffolding Collapsed, Injuring Two Workers!

At around 7 PM today (19 June 2021), steel scaffolding from the DASH highway under construction near the Kota Damansara toll of the NKVE highway collapsed.

Two Bangladeshi workers (between 20 and 40 years old) were under the steel scaffolding when it fell from a height of about 12 metres.

Both workers suffered injuries from the flying debris, and have been taken to the Sungai Buloh Hospital for treatment.

PROLINTAS Statement On DASH Scaffolding Collapse

PROLINTAS, the developer of the DASH highway, issued a stop work order, and their ERT (Emergency Response Team) had already started to remove the debris.

Here is our English translation of the PROLINTAS statement on the incident :

STEEL SCAFFOLDING COLLAPSE INCIDENT AT HIGHWAY UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Kuala Lumpur, 19 June 2021 – Project Lintasan Damansara-Shah Alam Sdn. Bhd., the developer for the DASH (Damansara-Shah Alam Elevated Highway) construction project confirms that there was an incident where steel scaffolding fell inside the DASH construction area near Kota Damansara late this afternoon.

In that incident, two Bangladeshi workers suffered injuries and were brought to the Sungai Buloh Hospital for treatment. The incident did not involve highway users or the public because it happened within a closed construction area. The DASG Emergency Response Team (ERT) was on site to control traffic and remove the steel scaffolding.

A stop work order was issued immediately. The developer and main contractor will give their full cooperation to the relevant authorities investigating this incident.

We will issue follow-up statements regarding this incident from time to time.

A tanker just hit the side of the Juru toll, spilling 20,000 litres of oil!

This is why tanker drivers need to be extra careful passing through toll gates.

 

Gone In 90 Minutes : Tanker Spills 20,000 Litres Of Oil!

At around 12 PM on 20 April 2021, a tanker passing through the Juru toll hit a metal pole on the left side.

The pole punctured the tank, which spilled its entire contents onto the road. Fortunately, it was just cooking oil!

The PLUS Response Time and the Prai Fire Department rushed to the site to contain the spill, and clean up the oil.

They succeeded in clearing everything by 1:30 PM, but the incident still caused traffic jam at the toll which apparently stretched for a good 3 kilometres!

The 50 year-old tanker driver suffered minor injuries to his leg, and was taken to the Seberang Jaya Hospital for treatment.

SUKE Project : Concrete Block Fell Off Lorry, Not Ours!

Concrete Block On MRR2, Under SUKE Project!

On 25 March 2021, motorists found themselves avoiding a concrete block on the MRR2, just days after a launcher crane toppled at the SUKE highway project, killing three people.

At first, everyone thought that this concrete block might have fallen off the SUKE highway under construction above.

This would not be the first time something fell off a construction project in Malaysia! But at least, it didn’t appear that anyone was injured by the concrete block.

The SUKE project team sent an ERT (Emergency Response Team) rider, to investigate and help direct traffic.

They then stated that the concrete block fell off a lorry travelling in the middle lane of MRR2, after Hillview, heading towards Ampang.

They also made it clear that the lorry was NOT from the SUKE project.

By 7:49 AM, they managed to clear the concrete block from MRR2, allowing free flow of traffic.

A launcher crane toppled over at the SUKE Highway construction site in Kuala Lumpur this morning, killing 3 workers and seriously injuring a passing driver!

 

SUKE Highway Crane Collapse Kills 3, Injures 1!

A launcher crane topped over at the SUKE Highway construction site in Kuala Lumpur this morning, crushing a car passing underneath.

Three construction workers from China died in the accident :

  • two of them fell from a height of about 120 feet / 36.5 metres, while
  • the third worker was trapped under the launcher crane, and could not be extricated

The driver of the Perodua Bezza car was seriously injured when a piece of the crane fell and crushed his car.

This is the second disaster to hit the SUKE Highway project this month, with a segment collapsing on 3 March 2021!

Chua Jia Wen shared with us this picture that shows the concrete beam (seen in the video above) that fell after the crane collapsed on it.

It is a miracle that the massive concrete beam did not hit anyone below!

The massive concrete beam fell right in front of her condo! Imagine if cars were driving in and out at that time…

Here are pictures from the scene, taken by passerbys. We removed pictures of the bodies, out of respect for the deceased and their families.

 

SUKE Highway Crane Collapse : Road Should Have Been Closed!

According to Senior Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, the road should have been closed when the crane was moved, as part of the SOP.

“In the implementation of such a project, if for example, you want to move the gantry launcher, the road needs to be closed. Once the structure has been safely (moved), only then can you reopen the route.”

He also said that the project contractor had been repeatedly warned to comply with the SOPs, and urged the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) to investigate.

He said that if the contractor was found to have breached the SOPs, strict action should be taken, “These contractors can be blacklisted, not given any project for two years.”

We certainly hope that the punishment for a tragedy that has so far killed three people and seriously injured one person is not just being blacklisted for two years!

A segment of the SUKE Highway under construction collapsed, after being hit by an overloaded trailer!

 

SUKE Highway Collapse : Van Trapped Under Wreckage

Just before 6 PM on 3 March 2021, an overloaded trailer hit the scaffolding for a segment of the SUKE Highway under construction near Bandar Tasik Selatan.

This caused a collapse that trapped a factory van with five people inside – all Malaysians who were on their way to work.

23 firemen, three fire engines and two emergency rescue vehicles were promptly despatched to extricate the trapped victims from under the wreckage.

All five were extricated in a 3-hour operation, and taken to the hospital. However, the police later confirmed that two died and three others were injured.

 

SUKE Highway Collapse : Overloaded Trailer The Cause!

According to Projek Lintasan Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang Sdn. Bhd, the collapse was caused by an overloaded trailer hitting scaffolding at the SUKE Highway construction site.

Please be informed that the said trailer was a private vehicle and is not involved in or affiliated with the construction of the SUKE highway in any way.

The accident at the MRR2 Highway near Bandar Tasik Selatan caused severe traffic congestion.

SUKE is currently extending all possible assistance and cooperation to the relevant authorities to ensure public safety.
