AMD unleashes new open source VR audio and streaming technologies

AMD TrueAudio Next & AMF 1.3 Unleased

AMD continues its deep commitment to open standards, releasing two new technologies empowering developers to create and share ground breaking content: AMD TrueAudio Next (TAN) and Advanced Media Framework (AMF) 1.3,

 

AMD TrueAudio Next

Audio is essential to creating a truly immersive VR experience – achieving lifelike presence in virtual reality demands audio that sounds as good as the graphics look. Until now, physics-based audio engines were forced to rely on statistically-derived physics. Part of AMD’s LiquidVR initiative, TrueAudio Next is a scalable AMD technology that enables real-time dynamic physics-based audio acoustics rendering.

Together with Radeon Rays, TrueAudio Next enables the entire soundscape to be modeled physically, with over 32 stereo 2-second convolution sources. TrueAudio Next’s open-source library will be available on GPUOpen, delivering spatially- and positionally-accurate audio to millions of consumers.

 

Advanced Media Framework 1.3

A major step toward enabling high-quality video streaming and recording, Advanced Media Framework (AMF) 1.3 is now open sourced under an MIT license, enabling developers of Radeon graphics cards to create GPU-based game capture programs for high-quality multimedia streams.

As part of AMD’s GPUOpen initiative, AMF enables developers to take advantage of AMD Video Engines (VCE and UVD), including comprehensive APIs for video encoding, decoding, pre-processing, and post-processing.

The AMF 1.3 SDK is freely downloadable through GPUOpen and is available for any developer to use, empowering them to easily integrate the SDK into their multimedia applications.

AMD formally launches ProRender and moves to GPUOpen

As part of GPUOpen, Radeon ProRender (formerly previewed as AMD FireRender) enables creators to bring ideas to life through high-performance applications and workflows enhanced by photorealistic rendering.

GPUOpen is an AMD initiative designed to assist developers in creating ground-breaking games, professional graphics applications and GPU computing applications with much greater performance and lifelike experiences, at no cost and using open development tools and software.

Unlike other renderers, Radeon ProRender can simultaneously use and balance the compute capabilities of multiple GPUs and CPUs – on the same system, at the same time – and deliver state-of-the-art GPU acceleration to produce rapid, accurate results.

Radeon ProRender plugins are available today for many popular 3D content creation applications, including Autodesk 3ds Max, SOLIDWORKS by Dassault Systèmes and Rhino, with Autodesk Maya coming soon. Radeon ProRender works across Windows, OS X and Linux, and supports AMD GPUs, CPUs and APUs as well as those of other vendors.

 

Radeon Solid State Graphics Technology set to transform workstation PC architecture

Starting at a full terabyte of Radeon Solid State Graphics (SSG), this innovative Radeon Pro technology will provide more than an order of magnitude greater memory capacity compared to existing GPU memory implementations, enabling vastly higher performance and ideal for the next wave of demanding use-case scenarios including real-time post-production of 8K video, high-resolution rendering, VR content creation, oil and gas exploration, computational engineering, medical imaging and life sciences.

During the world’s first demonstration of a Radeon Pro SSG solution, 8K raw video timeline scrubbing was accelerated from 17 frames per second to a stunning 90+ frames per second.

Applications for developer kits are now being accepted and full availability is planned for 2017.

AMD Dedicated VR Labs in Universities

SAN FRANCISCO, California — March 14, 2016 — AMD today announced it is helping colleges and universities create dedicated VR labs as Crytek’s exclusive technology partner in their VR First initiative. The VR First initiative provides colleges and universities a ready-made VR solution for developers, students and researchers.

AMD will equip the labs with its new Radeon Pro Duo graphics cards featuring LiquidVR SDK, the world’s fastest and most powerful VR creator platform , capable of both creating and consuming VR content. AMD will provide its LiquidVR Software Developer Kit (SDK) as part of the GPUOpen initiative.

Virtual reality has the potential to revolutionize how people experience the digital world with implications for gaming, entertainment, education, medicine, journalism and numerous other fields. The ultimate goal is to equip a new generation of developers who will create amazing and compelling experiences for users worldwide. AMD and Crytek share a commitment to seeding grassroots VR development.

The new labs will be equipped with AMD Radeon Pro Duo graphics cards with LiquidVR SDK, the world’s fastest VR content creator platform bridging content creation and consumption and offering an astonishing 16 teraflops of compute power. Designed to be compatible with multiple head mounted displays, including the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, AMD Radeon Pro Duo cards will encourage grassroots VR development around the world. The initial VR First Lab at Bahçeşehir University in Istanbul is already up and running in January of this year.

AMD GPUOpen Initiative – 3 New Developments

The AMD Radeon Technologies Group has just announced the AMD GPUOpen initiative at their Technology Summit today. This is part of their effort to improve performance from the software side, as well as access to open source drivers and tools. Let’s take a look at the Radeon Technologies Group’s presentation below.

 

AMD GPUOpen For Gaming

As a continuation of the strategy we started with Mantle, we are giving even more control of the GPU to developers. As console developers have benefited from low-level access to the GPU, AMD wants to continue to bring this level of access to the PC space.

AMD GPUOpen for gaming is giving developers the ability to harness the investments they’ve made on console development, including feature-rich, close-to-the-metal programming, and bring that to life on PC game development. Game developers will now have direct access to GPU hardware, access to a large collection of open source effects, tools, libraries and SDKs.

As such, in early 2016, libraries and samples i.e. source access to the library directly will be made available from AMD. GPUOpen is the primary vehicle to allow low-level access to the GPU.

 

New Compiler For Heterogenous Computing

One of the primary goals of Heterogeneous Systems Architecture (HSA) is easing the development of parallel applications through the use of higher level languages. The new AMD “Boltzmann Initiative” suite includes an HCC compiler for C++ development, greatly expanding the field of programmers who can leverage HSA.

The new HCC C++ compiler is a key tool in enabling developers to easily and efficiently apply discrete GPU hardware resources in heterogeneous systems. A Heterogeneous Compute Compiler that compiles an Open Source C++ Compiler for GPUs, and HIP allows developers to convert CUDA code to portable C++. AMD testing shows that in many cases 90 percent or more of CUDA code can be automatically converted into C++ by HIP with the final 10 percent converted manually in the widely popular C++ language.

 

Linux Driver & Runtime For HPC Cluster Computing

Demonstrating its commitment to Linux, AMD developed a new HPC-focused open source driver and system runtime.

This new headless Linux driver brings key capabilities to address core high-performance computing needs, including low latency compute dispatch and PCIe® data transfers; peer-to-peer GPU support; Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) from InfiniBand that interconnects directly to GPU memory; and Large Single Memory Allocation support.

 

Availability

An early access program for the “Boltzmann Initiative” tools is planned for Q1 2016.
