HONOR 9X | HONOR 9X Pro : Everything You Need To Know!

The HONOR 9X and HONOR 9X Pro smartphones promise to deliver 48 MP photography on the cheap.

Here is EVERYTHING you need to know about the HONOR 9X and HONOR 9X Pro, and how they compare against the HONOR 8X!

HONOR 9X | HONOR 9X Pro

Released just over a year after the HONOR 8X, the HONOR 9X and HONOR 9X Pro promise a few nice improvements, with a pop-up camera design. Let’s take a closer look!

Pop-Up Camera + Slightly Larger Display

The HONOR 9X and HONOR 9X Pro smartphones join the pop-up camera fad, just to squeeze out the display notch. Together with a slightly larger 6.59-inch display, HONOR eked out a 91% screen-to-body ratio.

The pop-up camera takes about a second to extend and retract, which may be problematic if you need to quickly snap a selfie. It sports the same 16 MP sensor, but with a smaller f/2.2 aperture.

Triple Rear Cameras

The biggest upgrade is, arguably, the 8 MP ultra-wide camera – available only in the HONOR 9X Pro – it offers a more dramatic viewpoint, especially for architectural or scenery shots.

The headline 48 MP main camera – available in both models – looks nice on paper, but defaults to 12 MP for better image quality. Unless you manually switch to the 48 MP mode, the HONOR 8X actually has a higher resolution 20 MP camera.

The last “camera” is a 2 MP depth sensor that captures depth information to help the main camera differentiate the subject from its background, to deliver more accurate software bokeh effects.

Same Platform, In A New Package

Both models run on the Kirin 810, which is the replacement for the Kirin 710 platform used by the HONOR 8X., and the Kirin 710F used in the HONOR 9X Malaysia Edition.

Specifications Kirin 810 Kirin 710 / Kirin 710F
Process Technology 7 nm 12 nm
Processor 2 x ARM Cortex-A76 (2.27 GHz)
6 x ARM Cortex-A55 (1.55 GHz)

802.11a/ac (5 GHz only)
Bluetooth Bluetooth 5.0 Bluetooth 4.2

The Kirin 810 offers two faster ARM Cortex-A76 cores with six low-power ARM Cortex-A55 cores, and a faster six-core ARM Mali-G52 MP6 GPU.

In addition, the Kirin 810 is fabricated on the 7 nm process technology, which means it runs cooler and uses less power than the Kirin 710 or Kirin 710F.

Side Fingerprint Sensor

Unlike the HONOR 9X Malaysia Edition, both HONOR 9X and HONOR 9X Global Edition feature a side fingerprint sensor.

Larger Battery + USB Type C Port

Both models come with a slightly larger 4,000 mAh battery – just 250 mAh (6.7%) more than the HONOR 8X.

The big upgrade though comes in the form of the USB 2.0 Type C port. It still charges at 18 watts, but at least it is bidirectional!

HUAWEI EMUI 10 – Everything You Need To Know!

HUAWEI just launched the EMUI 10 operating system, which promises to break the boundary between devices, and allow a seamless experience between different devices.

Here is everything you need to know about EMUI 10 – what it offers, and when it will be made available for HUAWEI smartphones!

EMUI 10 – The Highlight Of HUAWEI Developers Conference 2019

On 9 August 2019, Dr. Wang Chenglu, President of the Software Engineering Department at the HUAWEI Consumer Business Group officially unveiled EMUI 10 at the HUAWEI Developers Conference 2019.

Sadly, we were not present at HUAWEI Developers Conference 2019. However, we can share with you what’s new in EMUI 10!

EMUI 10 To Break Cross-Device Boundary

According to HUAWEI, EMUI 10 will break the boundary between devices, and allow a seamless experience between different devices.

Their premise appears to be based on the fact that many of us use multiple devices – many of us have two smartphones, or use a tablet and most certainly, a computer too.

And in a growing number of homes and offices, we have smart IoT devices too. But we have yet to have the ability to seamlessly control and manage them all.

HUAWEI has apparently designed EMUI 10 to solve this cross-device conundrum. How will they do this? Let’s take a look…

New EMUI 10 User Interface!

EMUI 10 will feature a new user interface, with a new dark mode. The new dark mode is designed to optimise colour contrast of the text and icons, against the dark background.

Here are three pictures that compare the current light mode, and the new dark mode in EMUI 10 :

Cross-Device Integration Through Distributed Architecture

EMUI 10 will introduced a new ability to stream HD video calls across multiple devices. This will allow you to make audio or video calls on whatever device you happen to be using at the moment.

You will be able to answer a video call on your smart TV, or vehicle-mounted device. You can also send your friends a real-time video feed from your drone.

It will also work in other ways. For example, your smartphone and computer will be able to share screens, and exchange data easily through drag-and-drop.

This distributed architecture requires the hardware capabilities of each device to be virtualised. This would give devices capabilities beyond its actual hardware features, because it would have access to a “shared resource pool” of connected devices.

Distributed Architecture, Distributed Security System

As part of its distributed architecture, EMUI 10 will have a distributed security system that uses a secure system architecture and operating system kernel as a foundation for security and trust.

Only devices authenticated by the user can be connected to other user devices. And even for connected devices, their communications are encrypted end-to-end, to protect the transmitted data.

EMUI 10 Unified App Development

EMUI 10 will introduced unified app development using its distributed UI programming framework, and virtualised hardware capabilities.

This allows developers to create a single unified app for different types of devices, with different displays and capabilities. There won’t be a need to customise the app for different hardware features.

What EMUI 10 Will Also Introduce

It’s a no brainer that EMUI 10 will come with some new features that have just been introduced in EMUI 9.1 :

  • a new EROFS file system, which delivers better random read performance and more storage space
  • a new version of GPU Turbo, which should support even more than the 25 games in EMUI 9.1
  • an improved version of HUAWEI OneTap Share. Also known as Share OneHope, it pairs your HUAWEI smartphone with your laptop, so you can easily copy and share files
  • their Ark compiler, which improves performance by converting apps into machine code

You can read more about these features in our EMUI 9.1 guide.

When Will EMUI 10 Arrive?

[adrotate group=”2″]

EMUI 10 is a heavily-customised variant of Android 10, which has not yet been launched.

So it will NOT be coming out anytime soon. It will only be released after Android 10 is officially launched.

Dr. Wang says that the beta version of EMUI 10 will be first tested internally on the HUAWEI P30 smartphones on 8 September 2019 onwards.

He also confirmed that the first smartphone to feature EMUI 10 will be the upcoming HUAWEI Mate 30 smartphones.

Will Older Devices Get Upgraded With EMUI 10?

Based on HUAWEI’s track record in introducing the EMUI 9.1 upgrade, many HUAWEI smartphones from 2018 and certainly all of their 2019 devices should receive the EMUI 10 upgrade.

However, it will take some time for the upgrades to be introduced.

The HONOR 20 Lite (HONOR 10i) Sneak Preview!

HONOR is about to launch the HONOR 20 Lite, also known as the HONOR 10i in some countries.

But before its official launch, we present to you – our sneak preview of the upcoming HONOR 20 Lite smartphone!

The Official HONOR 20 Lite Tech Briefing

Let’s start off with this HONOR 20 Lite tech briefing, for a quick overview of its key features!

The HONOR 20 Lite Up Close!

Like its predecessor, the HONOR 10 Lite, the HONOR 20 Lite has a 6.21-inch display, with a dewdrop notch. It is also powered by the same Kirin 710 mobile SOC, and uses the same design with a rear fingerprint sensor.

It does, however, have more memory and a lot more storage…. as well as a new triple-lens main camera, and a higher-resolution 32 MP front camera!

At the top, you will find the hybrid SIM tray, with a second microphone/

The Power and Volume control buttons are placed on the right side, with the left side completely clean.

Like the HONOR 10 Lite, the HONOR 20 Lite continues to use the old micro USB port. It also has the 3.5 mm audio port.

The row of holes on the left is the speaker port. The tiny hole between the micro USB port and the audio port is the main microphone.

The HONOR 20 Lite Cameras

The HONOR 20 Lite has a new, higher-resolution 32 MP front camera with a large and bright f/2.0 aperture. This is an upgrade from the 24 MP front camera of the HONOR 10 Lite.

The bright f/2.0 lens allows it to better handle low-light conditions – important since the front camera does not have any flash.

At the back, it sports a new triple-lens camera module. From left to right, they are the 8 MP ultra-wide camera (f/2.4 aperture), 24 MP main camera (f/1.8 aperture), and a 2 MP depth sensor (f/2.4 aperture).

The depth sensor does not actually take any pictures. Instead, it lets the camera to more accurately differentiate the subject from its background, allowing for more realistic software bokeh effects.

Rear Fingerprint Sensor

Like the HONOR 10 Lite, the HONOR 20 Lite uses a rear fingerprint sensor. It is very fast and accurate, and allows you to trigger specific actions with different fingers.

The only downside? You can’t use it to unlock the device while it’s attached to a car mount.

That’s when you need to use the Face Unlock feature. It uses the front camera and facial recognition algorithms to authenticate your identity.

Hybrid SIM Tray

The HONOR 20 Lite retained the hybrid SIM tray. This means the SIM 2 slot doubles as a microSD card slot.

You can either use a second nanoSIM card, or a microSD card for extra storage capacity. But not both at the same time.

The microSD slot will come in handy, even though there is a whopping 128 GB of internal storage.

Using a microSD card helps to protect your data, including photos and videos, in the event your phone is physically damaged or destroyed.

Dewdrop Notch Display

The HONOR 20 Lite has a Full HD+ display with a dewdrop notch, like the HONOR 10 Lite. This display has an aspect ratio of 19.5:9, and a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. However, HONOR swapped out the AMOLED panel for an IPS panel.

The display notch allows for notifications to be confined to the top, giving you more space for your work… or really, your games. Heh… In games or apps that do not support the notch, it will simply “disappear” by turning black.

GPU Turbo

GPU Turbo is a hardware and software combination that increases the “efficiency” of the GPU by up to 60%.

It does not mean you get a 60% boost in frame rate, although Honor says it will greatly reduce the jitter rate (variance between the highest and lowest frame rates), while appreciably increasing the overall frame rate.

How does GPU Turbo work? From what we understand, it uses a proprietary algorithm in the graphics driver to detect the change between the current frame being rendered, and the next one.

This allows the HONOR 20 Lite to boost CPU and GPU performance for completely new frames, and reduce them for frames with few changes.

The only downside? GPU Turbo support is currently limited. Extremely limited.

From what we understand – it will only work with PUBG MobileMobile Legends: Bang Bang and King Glory. Naturally, game support will be extended to more games over time.

The HONOR 10 Lite Up Close!

The HONOR 10 Lite (Price Check) is built around the mid-range Kirin 710 SoC, with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. Its large 6.21-inch display has a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels, and a dewdrop notch.

Even though it is a cheaper version of the HONOR 10, it also comes with the stunning Aurora Glass back, although the effect is more pronounced with the Sky Blue version, and less so with our Blue review sample.

Like the HONOR 10, it is powered by a 3,400 mAh battery, However, it only supports 10 watt fast charging, instead of the more advanced 22.5 watt HUAWEI SuperCharge technology.

The HONOR 10 Lite Cameras

The HONOR 10 Lite (Price Check) appears to use the same high-resolution 24 MP front camera, with a fast f/2.0 lens, as the HONOR 10.

The bright f/2.0 lens allows it to better handle low-light conditions – important since the front camera does not have any flash.

At the back, it sports an upgraded dual-lens camera from last year’s HONOR 9 Lite smartphone. It consists of a 13 MP camera with an f/1.8 lens, supported by a 2 MP depth sensor.

The depth sensor does not actually take any pictures. Instead, it lets the camera to more accurately differentiate the subject from its background, allowing for more realistic software bokeh effects.

Fingerprint Sensor

Honor opted to go with a rear fingerprint sensor with the Honor 10 Lite. It is very fast and accurate, and allows you to trigger specific actions with different fingers.

The only downside? You can’t use it to unlock the device while it’s attached to a car mount. That’s when you need to use the Face Unlock feature. It uses the front camera and facial recognition algorithms to authenticate your identity, so it will work even with the Honor 10 Lite mounted on your car’s dashboard.

Hybrid SIM Tray

Unlike the Honor 10, the HONOR 10 Lite (Price Check) has a hybrid SIM tray. This means the SIM 2 slot doubles as a microSD card slot.

You can either use a second nanoSIM card, or a microSD card for extra storage capacity. But not both at the same time.

The microSD slot will come in handy, because the HONOR 10 Lite only has 32 GB of internal storage.

There is also a higher-capacity 64 GB model, but microSD storage offers additional peace of mind – even if the phone is physically damaged or destroyed, you can still recover your data or photos and videos from the microSD card.

Dewdrop Notch

The HONOR 10 Lite (Price Check) has a Full HD+ display with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9, and a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. It features a dewdrop notch that is noticeably smaller than that of the Honor 10.

[adrotate group=”1″]

This allows the HONOR 10 Lite (Price Check) to boost CPU and GPU performance for completely new frames, and reduce them for frames with few changes.

The only downside? GPU Turbo support is currently limited. Extremely limited.

From what we understand – it will only work with PUBG MobileMobile Legends: Bang Bang and King Glory. Naturally, game support will be extended to more games over time.

Setting Up The HONOR 10 Lite

Setting up the HONOR 10 Lite is easy, and takes no more than 10 minutes if you are setting it up as a new device. Take a look at a video of the setup process.

Ergonomics

The HONOR 10 Lite (Price Check) is definitely much larger than the Honor 10(Price Check). In fact, it is about the same width as the Samsung Galaxy S9+ and the OPPO R17 Pro – they both have similar-sized displays, albeit shorter than both of those examples.

Its 6.21-inch IPS display is bright, although not as vivid as an AMOLED display. The non-standard 19.5:9 aspect ratio of the main display section gives you more screen space for gaming, but you will get some pillarboxing while watching movies.

[adrotate group=”1″]

Available Memory + Storage

The HONOR 10 Lite (Price Check) comes with 3 GB of memory, of which 1.83 GB (61%) is available for use. That’s actually pretty good, giving you enough free memory to run several memory-guzzling apps at the same time.

It also comes with 32 GB of internal storage, of which just over 22.6 GB (70%) is available for use. That’s enough for over 5,500 photos, or 4.25 hours of 1080p videos.

Camera Performance – Photos

The HONOR 10 Lite (Price Check) has a depth-sensing dual-lens camera, with a 13 MP image sensor paired with f/1.8 lens.  Photos from this camera have a 4:3 aspect ratio, with 3264 × 2448 pixels and an average file size of between 3 MB and 5 MB.

Here are 6 high-resolution samples from this 13 MP camera for you to check out. Click on them to load the full-sized photos, which you can also download to examine.

The photos from the HONOR 10 Lite (Price Check) are surprisingly good for its price point. It also has the brightest lens we have seen at this price point.

Just note that it does not have a macro mode, so has trouble focusing on near objects. Also, its bright lens greatly narrows its depth of field, so make sure you focus properly on the subject, or it will appear out of focus.

[adrotate group=”1″]

Camera Performance – Video Recording

Although its image sensor and processor is more than capable of handling 4K videos, the HONOR 10 Lite (Price Check) can only record 1080p videos.

Video Sample #1 : Piano Performance

The image quality is not comparable with flagship smartphones, but is good for its price point. That said, there are some focus seeking issues, and a notable lack of stabilisation.

Video Sample #2 : Street Market

In this walkthrough of a street market, you can see that the HONOR 10 Lite (Price Check) lacks image stabilisation. This is a shame, because electronic image stabilisation is not expensive from a software or performance point of view to implement.

Benchmark Notes

For some odd reason, recent HONOR review samples (like the Honor 8X) appear to disable the installation of PCMark and AnTuTu. This prevents us from testing its work, as well as battery performance.

With that in mind, we would counsel that you take the 3DMark gaming performance results with a pinch of salt. We cannot be sure if this review sample is using the same firmware as an actual retail unit.

Gaming Performance – 3DMark

Here is the HONOR 10 Lite’s score running 3DMark, using the Ice Storm Unlimited test.

The Kirin 710 appears to have a slight 7.5% performance advantage over its rival, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710, which powers the OPPO R17 Pro.

A closer examination of the results will show that its ARM Mali-G51 GPU is faster than the Snapdragon 710’s Adreno 616 GPU. On the other hand, it has a slower CPU.

Our Verdict

At first glance, the HONOR 10 Lite is hardly a notable smartphone. Those of us who are used to flagship devices will dismiss it. In fact, we would naturally favour the Honor 10 over it.

But we are not its target market. The HONOR 10 Lite (Price Check) is designed for the lower mid-range market, against rivals like the Realme 2 and Realme 2 Pro. In that regard, it is a formidable competitor.

The HONOR 10 Lite offers a large dewdrop display with a new processor in an elegant package, and a great price point. It also boasts a dual-lens camera with very bright f/1.8 lens.

Unfortunately, we are unable to give you a complete verdict because we are unable to test its work and battery performance. But we hope we have provided you with enough information in this review to make an informed decision if this is the right smartphone for you.

Where To Buy The HONOR 10 Lite

The HONOR 10 Lite is available in two variants, at the following price points :

  • 3 GB RAM + 32 GB storage : RM 749 / ~US$ 182 / ~£143
  • 3 GB RAM + 64 GB storage : RM 799 / ~US$ 194 / ~£152

The 32 GB model will be available for sale starting 9 January 2019 in two colours – Midnight Black, and Sky Blue.

The 64 GB model, on the other hand, will be available for sale at a later date, in Sapphire Blue and Shiny Red colour options.
