The Beauty Of Ramadhan With Yaman Ibrahim

Kuala Lumpur, 24 June 2016 – When Samsung first introduced its Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge to Malaysians, one of the features that took the nation by storm is its outstanding built-in camera. Many were looking for the perfect smartphone camera to take great shots in any condition; and much to their anticipation, Samsung’s latest flagship smartphones made users rethink what they can do with it.

One such fan to appreciate this remarkable camera in a smartphone is award-winning Malaysian photographer, Yaman Ibrahim, who has since begun his journey of capturing his country’s beauty with his Galaxy S7 edge.

Stunning night shots of Malaysian sights captured by Yaman Ibrahim on the Galaxy S7 edge

Inspired by the holy month of Ramadhan and the customs that come along with it, Yaman embarked on a quest to uncover and showcase his unique perspective on how Malaysians celebrate Ramadhan as a prelude to the upcoming Raya festivities.

Yaman, who is based in Kuala Lumpur, harnessed his interest in photography since childhood. With a deep passion in all forms of photography, his new series “Colors of Ramadhan”, all shot with the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge, perfectly encapsulated the culture, practices and traditions of the Ramadhan month.

“As a Malaysian, my goal is to provide an accurate representation of what my country is to me – in all its charm and splendour. The Samsung Galaxy S7 edge really was an extension of my being and my vision. It showed me more than what I thought a phone was capable of doing and I too was pleasantly surprised by the unexpectedly amazing shots,” said Yaman Ibrahim.

This photography series has touched face on what the lead up to Hari Raya is all about – the Malaysian culture and lifestyle, the joy of gathering together, the crowd of the evening bazaars and the peacefulness of prayers.

The Galaxy S7 edge captures even the busiest of lights in night setting

[adrotate banner=”5″]

“When we designed the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge, we wanted to ensure that it truly serves as the perfect lifestyle companion. Taking pictures during the day is great especially with sunlight as your natural lighting; however, the night holds just as much beauty. This is where the Galaxy S7 edge’s camera comes in – its superior quality helps users take stunning images regardless of the time of day,” said Mr Lee Jui Siang, Vice President, IT and Mobile, Samsung Malaysia Electronics.

People from all walks of life going about Ramadhan as seen through Yaman’s Galaxy S7 edge

As the world’s 1st smartphone to incorporate Dual Pixel technology, the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are capable of producing photographs of DSLR quality; perfectly retaining every detail in the contrasting shades of Malay cuisine to the brilliantly intricate architecture of the mosques. So as the kids play with fireworks and sparks, the fast auto-focus means no more blurred shots when you need to take blink-of-an-eye moments!

Both front and rear cameras are also built with f1.7 lens, allowing more light in into the photo for brighter shots that essentially capture the pure absolute beauty and rich colours even under low-light conditions, making its camera performance unrivalled and one-of-a-kind. Its outstanding low-light shooting function uncovers a whole new perspective into Malaysia’s rich culture and nightlife, and like what many have said about this the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge – this game-changing smartphone never does fail to impress.

Close Look At The Samsung Galaxy S7 edge

Superficially, the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge (Amazon) looks very similar to the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge. The Galaxy S7 edge is taller and slightly wider, and has double-curved edges. Just like its predecessor, it has the Volume buttons on the left, a Power button on the right and a Home button which doubles as a fingerprint sensor.

The SIM and microSD card slot is located at the top. This is a hybrid slot, in which SIM 2 doubles as a microSD card slot. You can choose to either use a second SIM card, or a microSD card; but not both at the same time. The earphone port is located at the bottom, near the USB 2.0 and microphone ports.

Samsung improved the front camera slightly, giving it a faster f/1.7 lens, giving it better low-light performance. The rear camera also comes with f/1.7 lens, but drops the 16 MP sensor for a 12 MP sensor with Dual Pixel autofocus technology. This allows for faster and more accurate focusing by using every effective pixel on the sensor for phase-detection autofocus.

This video gives you a quick tour of the various aspects of the new Samsung Galaxy S7 edge (Amazon) smartphone. Take a look :

South Korean superstar, Lee Kwang-soo, flew into Malaysia to help launch the new Samsung Galaxy S7 edge smartphone to great fanfare. His fans started lining up for the best spots by 3 AM, and hundreds of them thronged the Suria KLCC Concourse by 10 AM.

In this video, Lee Sang Hoon, President of Samsung Malaysia Electronics officially launched the Galaxy S6 edge, before Lee Jui Siang, Vice President, Mobile and IT Business Unit, Samsung Malaysia Electronics, detailed the unique features of the new Samsung Galaxy S7 edge smartphone.

Of course, many of you already know all that. After all, we had earlier posted our Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Preview, including our first experience using it with the Gear VR. In fact, you are probably one of those who tried to buy a Samsung Galaxy S7 edge in the first pre-order, and the second pre-order. [adrotate banner=”5″]

Lee Kwang-soo Is In The House!

As the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge is no stranger to many of those who attended, the real star of the event was truly the Korean superstar, Lee Kwang-soo. Almost a thousand of his fans screamed and mobbed him as he joined the Samsung Malaysia team in launching the Galaxy S7 edge smartphone. Check it out!

Samsung Malaysia also reserved 100 units of the Galaxy S7 edge smartphones in a special sale earlier in the morning. They came with an exclusive ticket to meet and greet Lee Kwang-soo, and get his autograph!

Somehow, I managed to snag one of these tickets! Lucky me!

Lee Kwang-soo was a really nice guy. Even though his handlers kept insisting that we are not allowed to take photos with him, he readily offered to snap photos with his fans.

Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Pre-Order Chaos

If you are not up and awake, you have just missed the biggest tech offer this week – the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Pre-Order. Samsung fans who waited up in the wee hours of the morning will not only get to be amongst the first 1,000 people in Malaysia to own the Galaxy S7 edge, they will enjoy an incredible 20% discount off the retail price, an extra year of warranty plus a free 128 GB microSD card!

Samsung set 5 whole days for the pre-order, but frankly, we expected the Galaxy S7 edge pre-order to sell out within hours, and it looks like we would be right. Right after the stroke of midnight when the Galaxy S7 edge pre-order mini-site was activated, it has been hammered so hard, it was impossible for us to even load the registration page properly.

In fact, it is now just past 2 am and we still have not been able to completely load the registration page.

Update @ 2016-03-07 : Samsung has just announced an extension of the pre-order campaign, with a new deal. Check it out!

Some People Succeeded

Our friend, Tc Pun, somehow managed to complete the process and pre-order his Galaxy S7 edge at about 1 am. His friend also made it about 15 minutes later. They had to use Telerik Fiddler to do it though. It pays to be a techie! 😀

What’s really funny though is that when he received the pre-order confirmation by email, it was titled as the Samsung Gear S2 Pre-order… 😀

Looks like someone at Samsung Malaysia reused the Samsung Gear S2 pre-order email template and forgot the change the title… Oh well, at least the email contents are correct! 😀

Sold Out!

As of 8:30 am, we can confirm that Samsung Malaysia sold all 1,000 Galaxy S7 edge smartphones they reserved for this pre-order. They probably sold out hours ago but we didn’t wait up to check! 😀

* From the comments of disgruntled customers who failed to register themselves for the pre-order, it looks like the entire pre-order sold out at around 3 am.

So we were right that the Galaxy S7 edge smartphones would sell out in hours, not 5 days as allocated by Samsung Malaysia. That said, maybe they will extend the offer, or introduce a different offer? We will find out soon enough! 🙂

First Gear VR Experience With Samsung Galaxy S7 edge

At the sneak peek of the new Samsung Galaxy S7 edge smartphone yesterday, we were also given the opportunity to try out the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge with the Gear VR Consumer Edition virtual reality headset. In fact, Samsung took us (virtually) to the Mobile World Congress 2016 in Barcelona, Spain, through seven 3D videos.

If you are wondering, this is exactly the same Samsung Gear VR Consumer Edition (SM-R322) that was launched on the 20th of November 2015. Although it was officially designed for the Samsung Galaxy S6 / S6 edge / S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note5, it appears that they had already planned to make it compatible with the new Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge smartphones as well.

The Samsung Gear VR Consumer Edition (Amazon) is the improved version of the Gear VR Innovator Edition (Amazon). It not only supports more devices, it also comes with an improved touchpad on the right side of the headset. Another improvement is the addition of a cutout in the Gear VR frame to allow the insertion of a headphone jack. This allows for a more immersive experience.

If you look closely at the lower left corner of Gear VR’s front, you will see the labels next to the adjustment locks that this is the Gear VR Consumer Edition (Amazon) originally released for the Samsung Galaxy S6 / S6 edge / S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note5.

Incidentally, the Consumer Edition of the Samsung Gear VR is 19 percent lighter than the original Innovator Edition, and features better foam cushioning.

Performance

[adrotate banner=”4″]The Samsung Galaxy S7 edge unit you see paired with the Gear VR Consumer Edition (Amazon) in this article is an engineering sample. So there were some glitches in getting Oculus VR to start up. For some reason, it loaded Google search with the keyboard instead.

But once we “fixed” the problem, it performed exactly like the Note5 did with the Gear VR Consumer Edition. That’s no surprise since both devices have similar sized screens (5.5″ vs. 5.7″) with the same resolution – 1440 x 2560.

Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Smartphone Revealed

This morning, Tech ARP was invited to an exclusive media preview of the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge smartphone. This is a sneak peek as the Galaxy S7 edge will only be available in Malaysia from the 18th of March 2016 onwards.

Check out the exclusive details we squeezed from Samsung Malaysia, and take a look at the video and pictures we took at the event!

Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Revealed

Samsung Malaysia’s Mobile Division Product Manager, Go Benn Lee, kicked off the big reveal with a presentation on what’s new in the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge smartphone. Check it out!

Later, we managed to browbeat him into answering some questions about the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge. Check out what we found out :

One Model, Three Colours

Samsung Malaysia will only bring in a single model – the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge with 32 GB of internal storage. The Galaxy S7 edge will come in three colours though – Black Onyx, Silver Titanium and Gold Platinum.

They made this decision based on the popularity of the Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy S6 edge+. They also chose not to offer larger storage capacities because the Galaxy S7 edge comes with a microSD slot, which supports up to 200 GB of additional storage.

This does not mean that the Samsung Galaxy S7 will never make it to Malaysia. That is still a possibility.

It’s The Exynos Processor

[adrotate banner=”4″]Samsung is using two different processors for the Galaxy S7 edge – the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, and their own Exynos 8890. Samsung revealed earlier that international versions of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge would use the Snapdragon 820 processor, while those sold in South Korea will feature the Samsung Exynos 8890 instead.

Today, we can confirm that the Galaxy S7 edge smartphones to be sold here in Malaysia will feature Samsung’s own Exynos 8890 processor. In other words, we will be getting the South Korean model.

Pre-Order & Special Bundle

Samsung Malaysia is preparing a pre-order opportunity, which could possibly coincide with a media event scheduled for the evening of March 17th. We will keep you updated on this.

You may be wondering if Samsung is going to throw in a free Gear VR headset with every Samsung Galaxy S7 edge smartphone. Well, we tried our best to weasel out something… anything… but they were very coy. They would neither acknowledge or deny that such a bundle would be forthcoming. They however assured us that it will be “a very special offer” that will make us go “WOW!” 😀

The Samsung Galaxy S7 edge

The new Samsung Galaxy S7 edge smartphone has a 5.5″ display but looks and feels like a 5″ device. This is due to the virtually bezel-less edges. And if you loved the Galaxy S6 edge’s curves, you will love the dual curved edges of the Galaxy S7 edge.

The Galaxy S7 edge retains the Galaxy S6 edge’s front camera, but uses the 12 megapixel Sony IMX260 sensor with Dual Pixel autofocus capability, paired with a much faster (brighter) f/1.7 lens. What this means is not only better low-light performance, but near-instantaneous focusing in the dark or with moving subjects.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 edge‘s  other two “killer features” would be its IP68 dust- and water-resistance rating, and its Hybrid SIM capability. You can take the Galaxy S7 for a swim at an instant – there is no need to prepare it in any way. Just jump right in! Too bad the Galaxy S7 edge does NOT support USB-C. That would have been another nice feature to have.

It also comes with two SIM slots, the second of which doubles as a microSD slot that supports up to 200 GB of additional storage. In other words, you can either use a second SIM card, or a microSD card, not both. Still, this is an improvement over the Galaxy S6 edge for many users.

The Galaxy S7 edge also features an “Always-on Display“, which shows basic information like the time, date, battery life and notifications at all times. This allows you to check those information at a glance. The Galaxy S7 edge will also feature an improved Edge Screen, which now offers more options and twice the width for more widgets / shortcuts.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 edge supports fast charging in both wired and wireless mode, just like the Samsung Galaxy Note5. But you may not need that as much because the Galaxy S7 edge comes with a large 3,600 mAh battery1,000 mAh (38.5%) more than the 2,600 mAh battery in the Galaxy S6 edge!

To top it off, Samsung listened to our complaints of the Galaxy S6 edge getting really hot, especially when taking photos and recording videos. They somehow managed to squeeze in a heatpiped cooler to better dissipate heat from the internal components.

Excited? So Are We!

We can’t wait to get our hands on the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge! If you are eager to get one yourself, be sure to check back because we will have more details and coverage for you. A media event has already been scheduled for the evening and night of March 17th. You can count on us to be there. If you want live updates, make sure you like our Facebook page!
