NVIDIA Reflex is being integrated into games, reducing system latency for GeForce graphics cards.
Find out what NVIDIA Reflex is all about, and how to use it to reduce system latency in supported games!
NVIDIA Reflex : What Is It?
NVIDIA describes Reflex as “a revolutionary suite of GPU, G-SYNC display and software technologies” that measure and reduce system latency.
System latency is basically the click-to-display latency – the delay between a key press or a mouse click to the actual action appearing on the display.
It is important for competitive e-sports gamers, because high system latency can impact their performance :
Delayed responsiveness : When you move your mouse, but your aim on the screen lags.
Delayed shots : When you shoot, the shot and weapon recoil lags.
Delayed enemy positions : peeker’s advantage is impacted by system latency
NVIDIA Reflex : How Does It Reduce System Latency?
A careful reading will reveal that the key to this technology is the NVIDIA Reflex SDK – a new set of APIs for game developers.
The NVIDIA Reflex Latency Analyzer, which is being integrated into the new 360 Hz G-SYNC Esports monitors, is only eye-candy, and not necessary for Reflex Low Latency Mode to work.
Once integrated into a game, the Reflex Low Latency Mode adjusts the game engine work to complete “just in time” for rendering. This eliminates the GPU render queue, and reduces CPU back pressure.
Like NVIDIA Ultra Low Latency (NULL) mode, Reflex prevents the CPU from processing faster than the GPU, eliminating extra frames from being queued up for rendering, which would normally increase render latency.
The difference really is this – by integrating with the game, the NVIDIA graphics driver can control the amount of back pressure the CPU receives from the render queue and other later stages of the pipeline.
This makes NVIDIA Reflex superior to NULL, but only with games that integrate the SDK.
NVIDIA Reflex : How Much System Latency Does It Reduce?
This NVIDIA chart shows the amount of system latency that Reflex shaves off in the first four games to support it.
The biggest improvement was seen with Destiny 2 and Fornite – system latency was down by about ⅓.
System latency was down by 22% in Apex Legends, and 18% in Valorant.
NVIDIA Reflex : Requirements
Reflex is only supported by NVIDIA GeForce GTX 900 series graphics cards onwards, using the GeForce Game Ready 457.09 driver or newer.
NVIDIA Reflex : Automatic, With Max Performance Option
There is really nothing much to set for NVIDIA Reflex. Games that support it will enable it by default, if it detects the presence of a compatible NVIDIA graphics card.
The latest GeForce Experience also comes with an automatic performance tuning option, that will turn on low latency options for supported games.
It is recommended that you enable NULL by selecting the Ultra option. Reflex Low Latency mode will automatically take priority over NULL in games that support it.
There is, however, a “hack” of sorts for those who want to squeeze every last microsecond of latency out of the pipeline.
The NVIDIA Control Panel has a Power Management Mode option that defaults to Adaptive, allowing the GPU to clock down and save power when the load isn’t high.
You can set this to Prefer Maximum Performance, to override the power saving feature. This forces the GPU to always run at the higher clocks, reducing latency in CPU-bound instances at the expense of higher power consumption.

Since then, they have improved it with new technologies like dynamic overdrive to improve player perception, and custom-tuned firmware for better image quality.
NVIDIA is now introducing 360Hz refresh rates for even faster reaction times – reducing it to less than 3 ms, so esports professionals can enjoy tear-free frames at incredibly low latencies.
ASUS ROG Swift 360 : World’s First 360Hz G-SYNC Display!
ASUS developed the ROG Swift 360 with NVIDIA, targeting it at esports professionals. It features a 24.5-inch panel, with these official features :
Blistering Fast Refresh Rate: 360Hz delivers crystal clear visuals, extremely low system latency for faster reaction times, and the smoothest motion to keep pros on target.
Designed for Esports: Play how the pros do and never miss a critical moment with the highest performance 24.5 inch Full HD display.
Superior Clarity: No distracting tearing, stuttering, flicker, or artifacts with NVIDIA G-SYNC VRR technology.
Quality Certified by NVIDIA: All G-SYNC certified displays undergo a rigorous validation process and are subjected to 300 image quality tests to ensure they deliver consistent quality and maximum performance.
NVIDIA will be using the ASUS ROG Swift 360 running a set of esports demos to demonstrate its improved performance in target acquisition, aiming and perception.
ASUS ROG Swift 360 : Price + Availability
For now, the ASUS ROG Swift 360 is only available for demonstration at the NVIDIA CES 2020 showcase. Price and availability will be revealed later.

On January 8, 2018 at CES 2018, NVIDIA introduced what they call the NVIDIA BFGD – the NVIDIA Big Format Gaming Display.
Created in conjunction with NVIDIA hardware partners Acer, ASUS and HP, the NVIDIA BFGD integrates a high-end 65-inch, 4K HDR 120 Hz display with NVIDIA G-SYNC technology together with NVIDIA SHIELD, to deliver a smooth gaming and streaming experience on a giant screen.
NVIDIA G-SYNC HDR adds HDR (High Dynamic Range) capability to G-SYNC, which is a variable refresh rate technology that delivers smooth, tear-free gaming experience, when used with an NVIDIA GeForce graphics card.
The NVIDIA G-SYNC HDR monitors will boast high refresh rates, higher brightness levels, greater contrast ratios, and a wider colour gamut. The NVIDIA BFGD will be no different, driving a 4K display at 120 Hz, and 1000 nits of brightness with DCI-P3 colour gamut.
Ultra-Low Latency Gaming
Nothing is more important to gamers than responsive gameplay. The NVIDIA BFGD will have ultra-low input latency, just like gaming monitors, for the most fluid and responsive big screen gaming experience.
Big Screen Streaming
[adrotate group=”2″]
The integration of the Android TV-based SHIELD into NVIDIA BFGD will allow gamers to easily switch between gaming and other forms of entertainment. The bundled SHIELD remote and game controller allow for easy navigation and access to all of the world’s biggest streaming apps, including Netflix, Amazon Video, YouTube, and Hulu.
With support for the Google Assistant, the entire experience can be controlled simply by using your voice. G-SYNC HDR technology also supports video playback at native framerates, including popular 23.976, 24 and 25 FPS formats. This matches the screen’s refresh rate to the video source’s actual frame rate, eliminating interpolation and presenting the video content as it was intended to be viewed by the director.
NVIDIA BFGD Up Close!
After the NVIDIA Computex 2018 GeForce briefing, we had the opportunity to take a close look at the NVIDIA BFGD monitor. This one appears to be an ASUS ROG model.

NVIDIA has been talking about the G-SYNC HDR technology for more than a year now. But now, they are finally ready to deliver the promise with actual G-SYNC HDR monitors! So here is a refresher’s course on NVIDIA G-SYNC HDR!
NVIDIA G-SYNC HDR Explained
NVIDIA G-SYNC HDR adds HDR (High Dynamic Range) capability to G-SYNC, which is a variable refresh rate technology that delivers smooth, tear-free gaming experience, when used with an NVIDIA GeForce graphics card.
Higher Brightness
NVIDIA G-SYNC HDR displays will have greatly increased brightness, with the ability to express deep saturated colours at a high brightness level. They will have the ability to produce at least 1000 nits of peak brightness, with support for the HDR10 format.
Greater Contrast
NVIDIA G-SYNC HDR displays will have a full array direct backlight, with at least 384 local dimming zones. This allows them to product contrast ratios of over 10,000:1. Traditional LCD panels with a global dimming backlight, in contrast, can only deliver contrast ratios of 1000:1 to 2000:1.
[adrotate group=”2″]
Wider Colour Gamut
The traditional sRGB colour space covers only about 35% of the colours the human eye can perceive. Hence, NVIDIA G-SYNC HDR displays will support the DCI-P3 colour space that offers 26% greater coverage of the visual spectrum than sRGB.
High Refresh Rate
NVIDIA G-SYNC HDR displays will support a high refresh rate using DisplayPort 1.4 with the High.Bit Rate 3 (HBR3) link. They will have the ability to display 4K at 144 Hz, instead of the usual 60 Hz for traditional 4K monitors.
The First G-SYNC HDR Displays
At the NVIDIA Computex 2018 press conference, and the follow-up GeForce tech briefing, NVIDIA showed off the first two G-SYNC HDR displays. They are both 27″ displays with what appears to be the same panel and key specifications. They both have a full array direct backlight, with 384 local dimming zones.
Acer Predator X27
The Acer Predator X27 (Price Check) is a 27″ 4K HDR display with a 144 Hz IPS panel, with a GTG (grey-to-grey) response time of 4 ms. It has a launch price of US$ 1,999.
ASUS ROG Swift PG27UQ
The ASUS ROG Swift PG27UQ is a very similar 27″ 4K HDR display with a 144 Hz IPS panel, with a GTG (grey-to-grey) response time of 4 ms. It has a 1000 nits peak brightness level, and a HDR contrast ratio of up to 50,000:1.

Unboxing The Acer Predator Triton 700

The Acer Predator Triton 700 Up Close
The Acer Predator Triton 700 (Price Check) is powered by the Intel Core i7-7700HQ quad-core processor with 32 GB of DDR4 memory, and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 with Max-Q Design. It even has two PCI Express SSDs running in RAID 0.
There are a total of five USB ports – three USB 3.0 ports, a USB 3.1 Gen 2 (Thunderbolt 3) Type C port, and a single USB 2.0 port. Curiously, that USB 2.0 port is actually recessed, and concealed by special cover.
To cater to gamers, it also comes with a full-sized LAN port, a HDMI 2.0 port, and a DisplayPort. Unfortunately, there is no SD card reader.
120 Hz Full HD G-SYNC Display
One of the key features of the Acer Predator Triton 700 (Price Check) is its display. It boasts a large 15.6″ display with an IPS panel and a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080. The display is capable of a 120 Hz refresh rate, and supports NVIDIA G-SYNC for a tear-free gaming experience.
If that display is not good enough, it has full-size DisplayPort and HDMI ports at the back, and a Thunderbolt 3 port on the right side, allowing you to hook up the Predator Triton 700 to an external 4K monitor.
[adrotate group=”1″]
Keyboard & Touchpad
One of the Acer Predator Triton 700’s best features is its keyboard, which boasts low-profile mechanical switches and individual RGB backlighting for each key. In addition to tactile feedback, this mechanical keyboard also offers N-key rollover (NKRO) and anti-ghosting capabilities.
Right above the keyboard is a 0.7 mm Gorilla Glass glass plate. It allows you to peek inside at the spinning AeroBlade 3D fan, and doubles as a large precision touchpad.
The only problem is the position of the glass plate makes it rather inconvenient to use as a touchpad. It also lacks buttons, so you will need to use multi-touch gestures instead.

AeroBlade 3D Cooler
In any premium gaming laptop, cooling is a top priority. The Acer Predator Triton 700 (Price Check) comes with two AeroBlade 3D fans and five heat pipes to quickly whisk heat away from the CPU and GPU, and exhaust it out.
Cool air is drawn in by the two AeroBlade 3D fans through a large number of vents on the underside, and used to cool the two heatsinks at the back and an additional heatsink on each side.
While this cooling system is very sleek and quiet, the Predator Triton 700 (Price Check) can get rather toasty. During our gaming sessions, we noted that the keyboard can reach temperatures of 40°C.
This is likely because there is very little clearance under the Predator Triton 700 for it to draw in cool air. We recommend using a laptop cooler.
Acer Predator Triton 700 Gaming Performance
The Acer Predator Triton 700 (Price Check) is powered by the Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor. This is a 4-core, 8-thread processor with a 6 MB L2 cache, a 2.8 GHz base clock and a 3.8 GHz boost clock.
It is paired with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 with 8 GB of GDDR5X memory. This is a Max-Q Design laptop, which means the GPU is tuned for peak efficiency, as opposed to maximum performance.
The Max-Q Design allows the GeForce GTX 1080 to run 40% cooler, with only a 10% reduction in performance. You can read all about this inThe NVIDIA Max-Q Design Tech Briefing.
Memory & Storage
Our Acer Predator Triton 700 (Price Check) model came with a phenomenal 32 GB of DDR4-2400 memory. Frankly – games do not need more than 8 GB of memory, so this is overkill. However, it is heaven-sent if you also intend to do serious work on the Predator Triton 700.
It also comes with two PCI Express SSDs in a RAID 0 (striped) configuration. Both SSDs have a storage capacity of 256 GB, so you have a total storage size of 512 GB.
Setting them up as a RAID 0 array allows for insanely fast transfer rates, which is great for benchmarks but will not matter much in games beyond loading faster.
The Battery
[adrotate group=”2″]
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Acer Predator Triton 700 (Price Check) comes with a really tiny 3-cell lithium-ion battery with a total capacity of 54 Watt-hours. It can’t pack a large battery in such a thin form factor. Remember – it’s only 18.9 mm thick!
The downside – there’s not much juice in the tank. And the Predator Triton 700 is a thirsty beast. There’s a reason why it comes with a 230 W charger.
We could only game for 45 minutes before the battery drained to 10%. That means you need to be tethered to a wall socket to game for any significant amount of time.
Speakers
We are pleasantly surprised to find out that the Acer Predator Triton 700 has pretty decent speakers. It makes it more enjoyable to game without headphones.
If you prefer using headphones though, you will be glad to know that it supports Dolby Atmos. It will give you better spatial awareness, with the 3D soundscape it produces.

Acer Predator Triton 700 : Our Verdict + Award
The Acer Predator Triton 700 (Price Check) is a really great gaming laptop for those who want a sleek and powerful gaming laptop. It packs a ton of gaming performance in a form factor that is just under 19 mm thick, and weighs only 2.4 kg.
We are impressed by its performance. What’s not to like? It has a quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with a very fast GeForce GTX 1080 GPU. If you want a gaming laptop that can take on AAA game titles, this is it.
Our model even comes with 32 GB of DDR4-2400 memory, and a RAID 0 array of two PCI Express SSDs. Serious overkill for gaming, but perfect for doing serious graphics and video work.
Beyond its raw gaming performance is its mechanical keyboard. Low-profile, yet offering the tactile feedback that many gamers desire. But we have to question their decision to adopt the see-through Gorilla Glass plate as a touchpad.
Sure, it’s a unique design feature that looks good, but it’s not practical. Whether you use the Predator Triton 700 (Price Check) for work or play, you need to pair it with a mouse.
[adrotate group=”2″]
The display is another great selling point. It offers a practical full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080, with an IPS panel capable of a 120 Hz refresh rate. It also supports NVIDIA G-SYNC for a premium tear-free gaming experience.
We also like the fact that it comes with not one, not two, but three display output options. This gaming laptop is designed to support an external display, if you find the 15.6″ display too small.
Its svelte form factor makes it a cinch to carry around, but its utility on-the-go is limited by its small battery. You will always be tethered to a wall socket, which means lugging along the large and heavy charger.
But if you’re a practical person who is not going to buy into the gaming on-the-go BS, the Acer Predator Triton 700 (Price Check) is a great gaming laptop. Just hook it up to a power socket, add a mouse and it will handle any game you throw at it.
In fact, we like it so much we think it deserves no less than our Reviewer’s Choice Award. Congratulations, Acer!
Pros
Cons
• 15.6″ Full HD IPS display with NVIDIA G-SYNC
• Small 3-cell battery capacity, with a short battery life
• Svelte form factor that is 18.9 mm thin, and only weighs 2.4 kg
• Bulky and heavy charger
• 32 GB of DDR4 memory!!!
• Gets a little toasty during games
• Ridiculously-fast RAID 0 array of two PCIe SSDs
• No fingerprint sensor or infra-red camera for Windows Hello login
