Was Shopee Warehouse Closed After 50 COVID-19 Cases?

Did the Ministry of Health shut down the Shopee warehouse after 50 employees were infected with COVID-19?

Claim : Shopee Warehouse Closed After 50 COVID-19 Cases!

This short warning, which came with two photos, went viral on WhatsApp.

It suggested that the Shopee warehouse was shut down by the Ministry of Health, after 50 employees tested positive for COVID-19!

Shopee Warehouse Closed, Not Because Of COVID-19 Cases?

The notice of closure by the Malaysia Ministry of Health (KKM) is genuine, but Shopee claims that they are unrelated to the allegations of COVID-19 cases.

Here is what we know so far…

Fact #1 : Shopee Denies Warehouse Closure Due To COVID-19 Cases

On 10 July 2021, Shopee claimed that the closure of their warehouse has “nothing to do with the alleged COVID-19 cases“.

They did not confirm or deny the alleged COVID-19 cases, or whether any of their employees recently tested positive for COVID-19.

Fact #2 : Pictures Of Police From Earlier Inspection

The pictures that were shared with the rumour was not from 9 July 2021, but a week earlier.

On 3 July 2021, Shah Alam district police officers inspected the Shopee warehouse to check for EMCO SOP compliance.

During that inspection, they identified an issue at the Shopee warehouse involving the registration of daily part-time workers in the COVID Intelligent Management System (CIMS).

Due to a misunderstanding of the SOP, Shopee was fined RM10,000.

The 9 July 2021 closure of the Shopee warehouse was unrelated to this 3 July incident.

Fact #3 : Shopee Warehouse Closed To Implement New SOPs

According to Shopee, they received guidance on additional SOP from KKM to implement in their Shah Alam warehouse, because Shah Alam is under EMCO restrictions.

They claimed that the guidance was very helpful, and thus their “warehouse will be closed temporarily to implement these added SOPs as quickly as possible“.

Fact #4 : KKM Ordered Shopee Warehouse Closure

However, the KKM notice tells a different story. It is an official Notis Perintah Tutup Premis (Notice of Premise Closure Order).

That was not a suggestion or guidance by KKM. It was an order to close the Shopee warehouse at the Mapletree Logistics Hub, from 9 July until 16 July 2021.

However, this does not mean that the rumours of 50 infected Shopee employees are true. It merely tells us that the closure of the Shopee warehouse was mandatory, not a suggestion.

Fact #5 : Warehouse Parcel Deliveries Will Be Delayed

While Shopee is assuring everyone that their platform is “operating per business as usual”, they admitted that there will be delays “for deliveries via our warehouse”.

They said that buyers whose orders are affected will receive an alert via push notifications in their Shopee account.

This is further evidence that the warehouse closure was not a suggestion, but an order that must be complied with.

 

Shopee Statement On Warehouse Closure Over COVID-19 Concerns

This is the 10 July 2021 statement by Shopee on their warehouse closure over COVID-19 concerns/

Dear valued Shopee users,

Shopee is cooperating very closely with the authorities who are working hard to fight Covid-19 in the country. On 9 July 2021,we received some guidance from the Ministry of Health (MOH) on additional Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) they suggested for us to implement at our Shah Alam warehouse. This is because Shah Alam has been placed under Enhanced Movement Control Order. It has nothing to do with the alleged Covid-19 cases, and the inspection is separate from the one conducted by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) on 3 July.

The guidance is very helpful and our warehouse will be closed temporarily to implement these added SOPs as quickly as possible.

To clarify, the Shopee platform is operating per business as usual and deliveries made by Shopee Express and all our other delivery partners are not affected. Some delays may occur and only for deliveries via our warehouse, which are a small portion of overall orders. Buyers whose orders are affected will also receive an alert via push notifications in their Shopee account.

Rest assured it does not impact our overall platform operations and we continue to provide Shopee users with all your needs.

Why Change Your MySJ ID In MySejahtera?

When you sign up for a MySejahtera account, you will be asked to use either your mobile number or email address.

That mobile number or email address becomes your MySJ ID.

If you are switching to a new mobile number or a new email address, you will need to quickly change your MySJ ID.

Otherwise, you may lose access to your MySejahtera account, as all OTP codes will continue to be issued to the old mobile number or email address!

On 8 July 2021, MySejahtera was updated to version 1.0.38, which lets you change your MySJ ID!

How To Change Your MySJ ID In MySejahtera : Step-by-Step Guide

For those who prefer a step-by-step guide with pictures, here is our guide on how to change your MySJ ID in MySejahtera.

Before you proceed, please make sure you do this first :

  1. If you are switching to a new mobile number, please make sure the new SIM card is inserted and activated.
  2. Please make sure you update to MySejahtera 1.0.38 or later before you proceed.
  1. Open MySejahtera.
  2. Tap on the Close button on the upper right corner of the default Check-in screen.
  3. Tap on Profile at the lower right corner.

  1. Tap on the menu (☰) at the top right corner of your Profile page.

  1. Tap on the Change MySJ ID option in your Profile Settings.If it’s missing, check to make sure you updated to version 1.0.38 or later.

  1. Key in your new mobile number or new email address twice.
    Use the link at the bottom of the screen to switch between the mobile number or email address options.
  2. Tap Confirm.

  1. MySejahtera will send an OTP (One-Time Password) to your new mobile number or email address to authenticate it.
  2. Key in the OTP sent to your new mobile number / email address to verify your new MySJ ID.
  3. Log out of MySejahtera, if it doesn’t automatically do it for you.
  4. Log into MySejahtera using your new MySJ ID and your previous password (which does not change just because you change your MySJ ID).

That’s it! You have successfully changed your MySJ ID to your new mobile number or new email address!

Sale of Clothes, Cosmetics + Toys Allowed in Phase 1 Areas!

When the Malaysia National Security Council (MKN) first announced the Phase 1 SOP, it allowed supermarkets, hypermarkets and departmental stores to open.

However, they were NOT ALLOWED to sell clothes, decorations, cosmetics and children toys.

That changed on 6 July 2021, when MKN released an updated SOP. They did not mention what they changed, but the 6 July 2021 SOP allowed :

In other words, supermarkets, hypermarkets and departmental stores can now fully reopen in Phase 1 areas.

Businesses Allowed in Phase 1 Areas!

Here is the current list of businesses that are allowed in Phase 1 areas :

Essential Services According To Sector

All industries are FORBIDDEN, except for the following sectors :

Manufacturing (60% employee capacity)

  1. Aerospace (components and maintenance, repair and overhaul – MRO)
  2. Food and beverage
  3. Packaging and printing materials, only related to food and health
  4. Personal care and cleaning products
  5. Healthcare and medical medicine
  6. Personal care items, personal protective equipment (PPE), including rubber gloves and fire safety equipment
  7. Components for medical devices.
  8. Electrical and electronics of global economic chain importance
  9. Oil and gas, including petrochemicals and petrochemical products
  10. Machinery and equipment for health and food products
  11. Textiles for PPE production only
  12. Production, distillation, storage, supply and distribution of fuels and lubricants

Agriculture, Fisheries, Livestock, Plantation and Commodities (“optimal” employee capacity)

  1. Agriculture, fisheries and livestock and their supply chains – for example, shops selling fertilisers and pesticides, or oil palm fruit processing factories are allowed to operate
  2. Oil palm, rubber, pepper and cocoa plantation and commodities including their supply chains

Construction

  1. Critical maintenance and repair works
  2. Major public infrastructure and construction works
  3. Building construction works that provide complete employee accommodation at construction sites, or workers that are housed in Centralised Workers Quarters (CLQ).
  4. Construction works of small projects carried out by G1 and G2 contractors.

Trade + Distribution

  1. Shopping malls must be CLOSED, except for supermarkets, hypermarkets, departmental stores and premises selling food and beverages, essential items, pharmacy, personal care, convenience store, mini mart, and restaurants for takeaway and home delivery.
  2. Supermarkets, hypermarkets, and departmental stores.
  3. Pharmacies, self-care stores, convenience stores and mini marts.
  4. Restaurants
  5. Laundry services, including self-service laundromats
  6. Pet care and pet food stores
  7. Eyewear and optical goods stores
  8. Hardware stores
  9. E-commerce – all product categories
  10. Wholesale and distribution – for all essential products only
  11. Vehicle workshops, maintenance and spare parts
  12. Other specialty retail store (petrol stations)

On 7 July 2021, the Malaysia Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) announced that a cabinet meeting chaired by the Prime Minister agreed to allow more sectors to open in Selangor EMCO areas!

  • Electrical and electronics (E&E) and its supply chains
  • Aerospace (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO))
  • Machinery and equipment (M&E) for the production of healthcare and food products
  • Selected food and beverage manufacturing
    – Mineral water, chocolate malt, coffee, tea, fresh milk
    – Sugar, cooking oil, flour, rice, break, milk products, grains, milk powder, biscuits, sardine, instant noodles, condensed milk, evaporated milk, salt, vermicelli, noodles, sauces, soy sauce, spices, baby food, frozen food (chicken, beef, mutton, seafood, vegetables) and animal food.

A. Manufacturing Sector

  • Dry Food : sugar, cooking oil, flour, rice, break, milk products, grains, milk powder, biscuits, sardine, instant noodles, condensed milk, evaporated milk, salt, vermicelli, noodles, sauces, soy sauce, spices, baby food, animal food

Dell Commissions Largest Solar Panel Globally In Malaysia!

Dell Technologies just commissioned the largest on-site solar panel globally at their Asia Pacific Customer Centre (APCC2) in Bukit Mertajam, Penang in Malaysia!

This RM2.25 million (~US$550,000) solar photovoltaic system is the first in Southeast Asia for a Dell Technologies facility.

This 700 kWp rooftop system consists of 1,590 highly-efficient solar panels, that will produce nearly 1,000 MWh of renewable electricity every year.

That is enough to power more than ¼ of the production lines at this 24-hour facility, reducing its annual greenhouse gas emissions by about 650 metric tonnes!

 

Dell Solar Panel In Malaysia : Towards Progress Made Real 2030!

This commissioning of such a large solar panel system is part of Dell Technologies’ Progress Made Real 2030 plan to create a positive and lasting social impact on humankind and the planet through 2030 and beyond.

Amongst other goals, Progress Made Real aims to source 75% of electricity from renewal energy sources across all Dell Technologies facilities by 2030, and 100% by 2040, with the goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

“We all have a role in protecting the planet. That is why Dell Technologies has committed to reducing our emissions across facilities, our supply chain and in the energy intensity of our products over the next decade, and reaching net zero emissions by 2050,” said Pang Yee Beng, senior vice president, South Asia, and managing director, Malaysia, Dell Technologies. “This solar power installation is key to us achieving this goal and we are extremely proud to lead the way in Malaysia with our largest on-site solar power installation globally to reduce emissions and create positive environmental impact.”

This is the end for Papparich in Malaysia – it has been ordered by the High Court of Malaya to wind up its business!

Last year, shareholder Chen Khairy Voon and the investment holdings company Agathisfour filed separate Winding-Up Petitions against Papparich Group Sdn Bhd on 15 May 2020 and 22 May 2020 respectively, over alleged unpaid debts of RM37.22 million

Just over a year later, the High Court of Malaya in Shah Alam ordered Papparich Group Sdn Bhd (PGSB) to wind up its business on 5 May 2021.

Chan Siew Mei of KPMG Deal Advisory Sdn Bhd was appointed as the liquidator, as per The Business Times.

According to the public notice, the Winding-Up Petition was directed to be heard before the High Court of Malaya at 9 AM on 11 August 2021.

The public notice also called for any party looking to support or oppose the Petition for the Winding-Up of Papparich Malaysia to appear for the hearing.

On 8 April 2021, Kingston Technology announced that their eMMC embedded memory will be featured in NXP iMX 8M Plus evaluation kits.

Although Kingston did not reveal which eMMC part was selected, the picture they released appears to show the EMMC08G-MB29, which boasts these key features :

  • 8 GB capacity
  • 3D TLC in pMLC NAND memory
  • eMMC 5.1 standard
  • 11.5 x 13 x 0.8 mm package size

They will be used as storage in the NXP iMX 8M Plus reference boards, which will be used for development and engineering verification.

On 1 April 2021, the Malaysia Minister of Health, Dr. Adham Baba, announced the purchase of 3.5 million doses of the CanSino COVID-19 vaccine.

This deal will be divided into two stages :

  • 500,000 finished doses, starting in April 2021
  • 3 million doses to be filled and finished by Solutions Biologics Sdn. Bhd. (SolBio)

The CanSino Convidecia is a single-dose vaccine, so the 3.5 million doses will be enough to vaccinate 10.9% of the adult population in Malaysia.

It also requires only standard refrigeration at 2–8 °C (36–46 °F), which makes it easy to distribute.

Therefore, the Malaysia Ministry of Health plans to use the CanSino vaccine in rural areas, and areas where recipients find it difficult to come twice for their vaccinations.

They are also planning to use it to vaccinate foreigners in Malaysia.

LG Mobile Shuts Down : Another Brand Bites The Dust!

On 5 March 2021, LG announced that its board of directors approved the decision to shut down its mobile business unit.

This came after rumours that LG was looking into “various options such as a sale, split sales or pulling out of the smartphone business“.

Even though LG had a strong following in the United States, in third place with 13% market share, that was not enough to turn a profit.

LG Mobile has consistently lost mobile hand over fist, even after trying all sorts of way to get consumer mindshare through devices like LG Wing, which featured a secondary display that swivelled out behind the main display.

If you can’t remember any notable LG mobile devices you have actually seen and tried out, you are not alone. This is why LG Mobile is no more.

After closing down LG Mobile, their focus will be in growth areas such as :

  • electric vehicle components,
  • connected devices,
  • smart homes,
  • robotics
  • artificial intelligence
  • business-to-business solutions
  • platforms and services

 

LG Mobile Shut Down : Effect On Consumers?

LG said that they will continue to sell their current inventory, but expect to complete the process of shutting down their business by 31 July 2021.

Even so, they assure customers that they will continue to provide service support and software updates of existing LG smartphones for “a period of time which will vary by region“.

So if you really love LG smartphones, you still have time and opportunity to grab one.

You may have to live with the fact that you will likely lose support and software updates after a year or so.

The loss of another brand will undoubtedly mean fewer choices, but is that really a bad thing?

Frankly speaking, there are way too many smartphone releases every year, and it’s getting really hard to differentiate them, never mind justify a yearly upgrade.

So, no one will really miss LG Mobile’s demise. And who knows? It could end up being resurrected like Nokia and Motorola!

 

LG Mobile Shut Down : Official Statement

Here is the official statement that LG issued on 5 March 2021 :

SEOUL, April 5, 2021 — LG Electronics Inc. (LG) announced that it is closing its mobile business unit. The decision was approved by its board of directors earlier today.

LG’s strategic decision to exit the incredibly competitive mobile phone sector will enable the company to focus resources in growth areas such as electric vehicle components, connected devices, smart homes, robotics, artificial intelligence and business-to-business solutions, as well as platforms and services.

Current LG phone inventory will continue to be available for sale. LG will provide service support and software updates for customers of existing mobile products for a period of time which will vary by region. LG will work collaboratively with suppliers and business partners throughout the closure of the mobile phone business. Details related to employment will be determined at the local level.

Moving forward, LG will continue to leverage its mobile expertise and develop mobility-related technologies such as 6G to help further strengthen competitiveness in other business areas. Core technologies developed during the two decades of LG’s mobile business operations will also be retained and applied to existing and future products.

The wind down of the mobile phone business is expected to be completed by July 31 although inventory of some existing models may still be available after that.

MKN just announced that their Work From Home directive will end on 31 March 2021! Here is what you need to know!

 

MKN : Work From Home Directive Ends On 31 March 2021!

On 11 December 2020, the Malaysia Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) confirmed that their Work From Home directive still applied for CMCO and TEMCO areas, but was optional for RMCO areas.

On 2 March 2021, the Malaysia National Security Council (MKN) cancelled MCO 2.0 and later, lifted inter-district travel restrictions.

On 9 March 2021, MKN confirmed that the existing Work From Home directive would continue in CMCO areas, with 30% capacity for office / management staff.

That finally ends on 31 March 2021. From 1 April 2021 onwards, there will no longer be a requirement for the management and support staff of private companies to work from home.

In the private sector, 100% of the management and operations or support staff in CMCO areas can return to work in their offices.

In the public sector, the attendance will be based on the circular or orders of the Public Services Department (JPA).

Wrong MySejahtera Vaccine Registration Dates?

On 3 March 2021, MySejahtera started displaying a vaccination status page, but it only appeared for some people.

For everyone else, clicking on the Vaccine for [Your Name] link just leads them back to the registration process, instead of the status page.

They would have to go through the entire vaccination registration process again, before the status page would appear.

After they re-register for vaccination on MySejahtera, the Vaccine for [Your Name] link will then correctly show the vaccination status page.

There was also concern when users noticed that MySejahtera was showing a new registration date, instead of the original registration date.

 

No Need To Register Again For Vaccine On MySejahtera!

On 4 March 2021, the National Immunisation Programme Coordinating Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, said that MySejahtera is currently updating its vaccination registration record.

Missing Vaccination Status Page?

He assured everyone that all MySejahtera users should see the vaccination status page today.

If you still do not see the vaccination status page, you do NOT need to re-register for the vaccination programme.

Wrong Vaccination Registration Date?

He also said that those who re-registered and received a new date on their vaccination status page do not need to worry.

The appointment will be set according to the first registration date, not the new registration date.

MKN : Work From Home Directive Still Applies!

On 11 December 2020, the Malaysia Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) confirmed that their Work From Home directive still applied for CMCO and TEMCO areas.

On 2 March 2021, the Malaysia National Security Council (MKN) cancelled MCO 2.0 and later, lifted inter-district travel restrictions.

On 9 March 2021, MKN confirmed that the existing Work From Home directive would continue in CMCO areas, with 30% capacity for office / management staff.

Therefore, businesses are expected to continue implementing their work from home policies. This is only optional for RMCO areas.

 

MKN Work From Home Directive : What You Need To Know!

Here is a refresher course on the MITI Work From Home directive, based on the latest 23 October 2020 FAQ :

1. Is WFH Mandatory?

WFH is compulsory for management and supervisory staff in CMCO and TEMCO areas, including those involved in tasks like:

  • accounting
  • finance
  • administration
  • law
  • planning
  • ICT.

WFH is not compulsory for employees of these sectors, who are allowed to work as normal :

  • retail stores, grocery stores, convenience stores
  • food stalls, food courts, restaurants
  • plantation and agriculture
  • transportation – express bus, LRT, MRT, taxi, e-hailing
  • food delivery services

2. What If We Need To Be In The Office?

Up to 10 per cent of management and supervisory staff can be in the office, limited to 4 hours only – from 10 AM until 2 PM – for up to 3 days a week.

If the company has 10 people or fewer in the management and supervisory group, only one (1) person is allowed to come to the office at one time.

The company must issue an authorisation letter for each employee who is allowed to work.

3. Can We Rotate?

Companies can create a rotation system for their management and supervisory staff.

The company should maintain the rotation schedule, as well as a list of those who are working from home, and those who are allowed to work in the office.

4. Can We Change The Working Hours?

No, MITI requires companies to comply with these rules for management and supervisory staff :

  • maximum of 4 hours a day
  • from 10 AM until 2 PM
  • maximum of 3 days a week

5. Do We Need To Get Tested Before Working In The Office?

COVID-19 screening is not mandatory for staff who are working in the office. It is only mandatory for :

  • foreign workers in the construction sector
  • security guards
  • all workers from red zones who are symptomatic

For their inaugural Remote Work Readiness Index, Dell Technologies surveyed over 7,000 working professionals in the Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ) region, of which 1,030 were from Malaysia.

The survey for the Dell Technologies RWR Index was meant to capture data on their readiness and views on long-term remote work.

Here is a summary of the key findings in the Dell Remote Work Readiness survey for Malaysia :

  • 70% already have some experience with remote working before the MCO took effect.
  • 84% feel prepared for long-term remote work
  • Only 43% feel that their employers support remote working for the long term
  • their top 3 concerns were :
    – 33% : their job security
    – 31% : blurring boundary between professional and personal lives
    – 28% : lack the right technology assets to be productive
  • 50% feel their employers are not providing enough tech resources for successful remote work
  • their top 3 tech challenges :
    – 44% : unstable remote network
    – 33% : lack of access to internal company resources
    – 29% : have to use personal productivity equipment and tools for work
  • Only 43% feel that their employers are providing enough HR resources for successful long-term remote work
  • their top 3 HR challenges
    – 47% : lack of in-person communication
    – 38% : lack of learning and development sessions
    – 37% : lack of team engagement and access to HR processes

Based on the Dell Remote Work Readiness survey for Malaysia, here are the changes companies should look at adopting for successful remote work :

  • 42% : Better access to productivity equipment and tools
  • 38% : A stable remote network, including adequate Internet bandwidth, is necessary
  • 36% : Better access to internal company resources

MCO / PKP 2.0 : Why The Need For New SOP?

The MCO (Movement Control Order) 2.0 initially applied to eight states and territories in Malaysia on Wednesday, 13 January 2021.

The MCO 2.0 was soon extended across the entire country, except for Sarawak, from 26 January 2021 onwards.

The government then introduced a new SOP to balance the massive spike in COVID-19 cases, with the economic losses of the original MCO lockdown.

 

Updated SOP for MCO / PKP 2.0 (29 Jan 2021) in Malaysia!

On 12 January 2021, Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced some details of the new SOP for MCO / PKP 2.0.

This was followed by various changes to the SOP announced by MKN over time.

Please follow this SOP, because failure to do so could result in a compound of up to RM1,000 per offence!

Travel

  • Two (2) persons are allowed to leave each household, in the same vehicle, to purchase food and other necessities.
  • Up to 3 people (including the patient) are allowed to leave each household to seek healthcare.
  • Travel is limited to a radius of 10 km from your household, unless there is no supply / availability within 10 km.
  • Interstate and inter-district travel are FORBIDDEN.
  • Tourism is FORBIDDEN.
  • Travel for emergencies like funerals are allowed with permission from the police.
  • Travel because of natural disasters are allowed.
  • PCA and RGL travel arrangements between Malaysia and Singapore are allowed to continue.

Food & Beverage Industry

  • Restaurants (including those in pubs and night clubs), cafes, hawker stalls, roadside stalls, food courts, food trucks are allowed to open from 6 AM to 10 PM.
  • No dine-in is allowed. Only takeaway, drive-through and delivery are permitted

Petrol Stations

  • Operation hours : 6 AM to 10 PM.
  • Petrol stations on highways and expressways allowed to operate 24 hours

Markets

  • Morning and farmers’ markets : 7 AM to 2 PM
  • Wholesale markets : 11 AM to 4 PM, or 12 PM to 6 PM
  • Night markets and late night bazaars : 4 PM until 10 PM.

Healthcare

  • Hospitals, clinics, medical labs : 24 hours
  • Pharmacies : 6 AM to 10 PM
  • Veterinary clinics + pet food stores : 6 AM to 10 PM

Shopping + Services

  • Supermarkets are allowed to open from 6 AM to 10 PM.
  • Groceries and convenience stores are allowed to open from 6 AM to 10 PM.
  • Laundromats, including self-service laundromats : 6 AM to 10 PM
  • Hair saloons + barber shops : until 10 PM.
  • Optical shops : 6 AM to 10 PM.
  • Car washes : until 10 PM.
  • Clothing stores are FORBIDDEN.

Schools + Education

  • Students who will undertake major examinations like SPM, SVM, SKM, STPM, STAM, and DVM for 2020 and 2021 are allowed to attend school with strict SOP.
  • Matriculation colleges are allowed to operate.
  • Students in boarding schools and universities are allowed to continue hybrid studying.
  • International and professional exams are allowed.
  • Research activities requiring lab access in institutes of higher learning are allowed.
  • Lecturers and teachers are allowed to travel to teach classes with examinations.
  • Kindergartens, nurseries and day care facilities are allowed to continue operating.
  • Tuition, music, dance, art, language classes are FORBIDDEN.

Sports

  • Running and jogging allowed, but limited to maximum of two (2) family members
  • Cycling allowed, but limited to one (1) person, up to 10 km from household.
  • Group cycling is FORBIDDEN.
  • Physical distance of 2 metres should be maintained
  • All other sporting activities are FORBIDDEN.

Entertainment

  • Night clubs and pubs are FORBIDDEN.
  • Theme parks, indoor playgrounds, family karaoke and cinemas are FORBIDDEN.
  • Concerts and live events are FORBIDDEN.
  • Spas, reflexology centres are FORBIDDEN.

Social + Religious Activities

  • Parades and religious gatherings like Thaipusam are FORBIDDEN.
  • Up to 5 committee members may manage mosques and other religious houses of worship.
  • Weddings, parties, engagement parties, receptions, anniversary celebrations, birthday celebrations, reunions, retreats and other social events are FORBIDDEN.

Manufacturing + Business Activities

  • The government has identified five (5) essential economic sectors that will be allowed to operate – manufacturing, construction, essential services, trade and distribution, as well as plantations and commodities.
  • However, only 30% of the management team is allowed to be in the office.
  • For unlisted sectors or non-essential services, employees are required to work from home.
  • Conferences, meetings, seminars, courses and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) activities are FORBIDDEN.

NTT Launches Fifth Data Center In Malaysia – Cyberjaya 5

On 3 February 2021, NTT Ltd announced the launch of their fifth data center in Malaysia – Cyberjaya 5 (CBJ5).

Located within the NTT Cyberjaya Campus, this new 107,000 square feet data center is designed for hyperscalers and high-end enterprises in Malaysia’s growing digital economy.

CBJ5 supports 6.5 megawatts of flexible and scalable power, and boasts a Tier IV-ready, compact and modular design, with a cooling wall system that handles up to 15 kilowatts per rack.

NTT clients will have greater access to flexible, scalable and secure infrastructure in Malaysia – a regional data center hub.

“The demand for data storage and managed hosting services is expected to grow exponentially across Malaysia. This fifth data center will meet the expanding needs of organizations to reach their digital business objectives, in particular the FSI sector, as our data center complies with the Risk Management in Technology (RMiT) guideline set by Bank Negara Malaysia. We hope to play a key role in providing the vital data capacity at a high speed to keep Malaysia’s digital ecosystems and the digital economy ticking.” said Henrick Choo, CEO, NTT Ltd. in Malaysia.

 

NTT Cyberjaya 5 : Part Of Strategic ASEAN Hub

CBJ5 is connected to the existing Asia Submarine-cable Express (ASE) and Asia Pacific Gateway (APG) cable system, and will eventually be linked to the upcoming MIST cable system.

The MIST cable system will be available by end 2022 and it is a strategic joint venture for international submarine cables in South East Asia, with Orient Link Pte. Ltd.. It will enable NTT Ltd. to expand its offerings into India and beyond, while the ASE and APG cable systems provide global connectivity from Asia to United States.

This new expansion in Malaysia is part of NTT Global Data Centres division’s growth strategy. Malaysia is a prime data centre market in the ASEAN region, due to the abundant availability of resources, and favourable government policies.

6) Barbershops banned
7) Only 50 people allowed in a supermarket at any one time
8) Supermarket operating hours: 8.am-8.30pm

52 New MCO SOP Rules For Next 6 Months : Utter Nonsense!

This viral message about 52 new MCO SOP rules that will kick off on 4 February 2021 is nonsense.

That’s because some of them are already part of the latest SOP! And while some of them could possibly be implemented in the future, the rest are unlikely to be come true.

This hoax is probably trying to leverage the fear of a complete economic shutdown that was sparked by the leaked Eurocham circular.

KKM Confirmed That They Are FALSE

On 31 January 2021, the Malaysia Ministry of Health finally announced that the viral message was FALSE.

– Under current MCO SOP, no one is supposed to leave the house, except to purchase food, necessities and for cycling and jogging, so these rules are nonsensical.

7) Only 50 people allowed in a supermarket at any one time
– It is very hard for supermarkets to manage the number of people going in and out

13) Only 5 persons allowed to enter store at a time

– you cannot ban a public holiday, but the government will likely ban public gatherings, and perhaps even family gatherings (except those from the same household).

– the delivery of essential goods has never been restricted even during the first MCO, and that won’t change because people need these supplies
– limiting working hours will also not help cut down on infection rates

27) All 3-star hotels to become quarantine centers
– the government may offer 3-star hotels the opportunity to serve as quarantine centres, but it won’t be mandatory
– the cost will also be significantly higher than the MAEPS quarantine centre.

28) 24 Highways to be closed
– as flow of essential goods is necessary, it would not be logical to close any highway
existing travel restrictions are good enough to prevent interstate travel

30) Electricity bill discount: 10-15%
31) Water bill discount: 10-25%
45) West Malaysia electricity bill discount 10%
46) 13% discount on electricity for West Malaysia

– It is very unlikely that the government can afford to pay for such high discounts
– the conflicting electricity bill discount for West Malaysia shows that this list is just made up

32) Hawker subsidy: Rm300
– This is unlikely to happen because there’s no registry of hawkers, which makes it impossible for the government to implement such a scheme

33) 15% discount on national land tax
44) Peninsula house tax discount 10%
37) Extension of land tax for 1 year

– These are unlikely to happen because it won’t help the rakyat much, only the wealthy who own many houses

34) Can withdraw RM15K Pension at one time
– The government already allowed the withdrawal of RM10K from EPF in 2021
– It is very unlikely that they will allow another withdrawal of RM15K in the same year

36) Extend personal loan for 6 months
– The banks are already restructuring personal loans into fixed rate loans, so another loan moratorium is unlikely

40) 25% discount on rent for SMEs
– How do you force private owners to give SMEs a 25% discount on their rents?

50) Important sectors prohibited from commencement
– Critical sectors involved in the production of food and essential supplies was allowed during the first MCO, and will not be prohibited, because well, they are essential!

Eurocham Leak Of Malaysia Shutdown : What Happened?

On 23 January 2021, a Eurocham (EU-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry) circular to their members leaked and circulated on social media – WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Many netizens and even media outlets blared warnings of a TOTAL LOCKDOWN immediately after 4 February 2021.

 

Eurocham Leak Of Malaysia Shutdown : Nothing Shocking…

When the circular leaked, there were expressions of SHOCK! Horror! Outrage! online.

The truth is – those who actually read the circular carefully would be nonplussed about what it revealed…

It was really an appeal to the manufacturing industry to help cut down on the infection rate, so that the economy does NOT need to shut down.

So please don’t panic over the threat of a complete shutdown of the economy. We went through it once with the first MCO in March 2020.

It will be no different. We survived that, and if it happens again, we will be ready for it. Remember, my fellow Malaysians – MALAYSIA BOLEH!!!

Eurocham Leak Of Malaysia Shutdown : The Facts

For those who want a play-by-play of why there’s nothing to worry about in the Eurocham circular, here are our points…

Fact #1 : It Was KKM With Clear Stand On Complete Shutdown

The circular noted that it was the Malaysia Ministry of Health (KKM) that “made a clear stand of the matter of a complete shutdown of the economy“.

It did not even mention what that “clear stand” was, but KKM has stated publicly that they recommended a strict lockdown to the government several times in the past.

Fact #2 : Shutdown Was Always A Possibility

A complete shutdown of the economy, which happened with the first MCO, was always a possibility.

The Malaysia Ministry of Health shared publicly that they had recommended the reimposition of those strict measures several times in the past.

Fact #3 : Shutdown Was Predicated On Infection Rate

What many people did not notice or care is that the “threat” of a complete shutdown of the economy was predicated on the infection rate.

Should the infection rate not decrease, the Malaysian government will announce a shutdown / strict lockdown immediately after 4 February 2021.

In other words – if the infection rate can be brought down, the shutdown or strict lockdown will not happen at all.

Fact #4 : Shutdown Was Overruled In The Past

The Malaysian government overruled KKM’s recommendations for strict MCO in the past, so even their “clear stand” this time may not amount to much.

In fact, the circular states that the Malaysian government is considering either a shutdown or a strict lockdown (see the quote in Fact #3).

Fact #5 : Industry Was Asked To Help Cut Down Infection Rate

The circular points out that the manufacturing sector accounts for a large number of clusters, and worker dormitories, transportation and social activities were identified as key problem areas.

Therefore, the meeting was to get the manufacturing industry to help clamp down on the infection rate, by addressing those problem areas.

Fact #6 : It Was An Urgent Appeal To Forestall A Shutdown

If the government had already made up their mind to shutdown the economy, they would not bother to call for such meetings with industry representatives.

It was obvious from the circular that the Malaysian government was urgently appealing for industries to solve the problem of persistently high COVID-19 infection rates.

Hence, the circular listed two urgent measures that companies were requested to implement immediately.

Jabil Circuit Penang : Closed After 21 COVID-19 Cases!

Plant 1 of Jabil Circuit Penang was shut down until 7 January 2021 after 21 employees tested positive for COVID-19 in a screening test!

 

Jabil Circuit Penang : 21 Employees Positive For COVID-19!

On 29 December 2020, Plant 1 at Jabil Circuit Penang was shut down by the Malaysia Ministry of Health (KKM) after 21 employees there tested positive for COVID-19.

They were part of over 2,000 Jabil Circuit Penang employees who underwent screening tests from 18 to 25 November 2020.

Only Plant 1 was shut down, with Jabil Circuit Penang’s other sites remaining operational.

The notice posted outside Plant 1 of Jabil Circuit Penang stated that KKM closed it down from 3 PM on 29 December 2020, until 7 January 2021.

Their statement released today said, “Jabil is complying with all the necessary precautionary measures and working closely with the MOH, local government officials and local health authorities to follow protocol.

 

Jabil Circuit Penang COVID Exposure : Should You Be Concerned?

As per MOH guidelines, they will be performing contact tracing, and contacting those who came in close contact with the affected employees.

If you happened to be in close contact with the affected Jabil Circuit Penang employees, you will be contacted and asked to self-quarantine as well as undergo a screening test.

This case highlights the risks of staying in close quarters in worker hostels, and why the government continues to insist that office employees must work from home.

You are only at risk if you come into close contact with these affected employees, including outsiders supplying and transporting in and out of their factory.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus is easily destroyed by soap, so a deep cleaning operation will definitely clear the building of any infectious particles, albeit only temporarily.

The best way to protect yourself is to always wear a face mask in public. Face masks have been proven to prevent the spread and reduce the risk of being infected.

Panasonic : Two Factories Closed With 116 COVID-19 Cases!

Panasonic Malaysia issued a notice to Bursa Malaysia earlier today, announcing that they closed both their factories in Shah Alam after 116 COVID-19 cases were detected there.

After a recent screening operation of their 2,137 employees revealed those 116 cases, the Petaling District Health Office advised them to cease operations.

Panasonic decided to shut down both Shah Alam factories for 3 days – from 21 December until 23 December 2020, to allow for disinfection and deep cleaning of both manufacturing facilities.

They maintain that there is regular disinfection of both their manufacturing facilities and workers’ accommodation, and all necessary precautions were strictly enforced.

 

Panasonic : Official Statement On COVID-19 Cases

Here is the official Panasonic announcement on the COVID-19 positive case at their Shah Alam factories :

The Company wishes to inform that some of the staff at both its manufacturing facilities in Shah Alam has been confirmed COVID-19 positive after the Company conducted a recent screening. The Petaling District Health office has advised to cease operations for the time being until further notices. The Company has decided to close its facilities from 21 to 23 December 2020 to allow the disinfection specialist to carry out their work.

The Company had completed full screening of about 2,137 workers and employees and only 116 were found to be affected.The safety and well-being of our workers and employees as well as our community is of our utmost priority towards containing the situation. The Company has and will continue to adhere to the COVID-19 preventive standard operating procedures (SOPs) on a stringent basis. Disinfection exercises at our manufacturing premises and workers’ accommodation have been conducted regularly, with all the necessary precautionary measures strictly in place.

 

Panasonic COVID-19 Cases : Should You Be Concerned?

There is no need to be concerned, unless you supply goods to either Panasonic factories in Shah Alam, or are in close contact with their employees.

There is no evidence that COVID-19 can spread through fomites – contaminated objects. So there is NO NEED to worry that you can get infected through Panasonic products.

Panasonic Malaysia and the Malaysia Ministry of Health (KKM) are definitely conducting contact tracing of the affected employees. Those identified as close contacts will be asked to self-quarantine, and get tested for COVID-19.

Kaspersky on APAC Digital Reputation Threats!

At the 6th Vitaly Kamluk, Kaspersky Director of Global Research and Analysis for APAC, shared the latest threats to digital reputation in the APAC region, which is precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“One of the most visible effect of this pandemic is how it forced everyone, from individuals to the biggest companies, to shift a lot of their activities online.

This dependence, triggered by our need to secure our physical health, also pushed us to increase our social media use, either to connect with our distant loved ones, to give support to our community, to entertain ourselves, or to get hold of products and services that we need.

Parallel to this trend is the opening of wider doors for cybercriminals to exploit”

With many employees working from home, cybercriminals have found new ways to exploit this situation :

  • brute force attacks on database servers increased 23% in April 2020
  • Malicious files planted on websites increase 8% in April 2020
  • Network attacks and phishing emails also rose

Kaspersky themselves reported an increase of unique malware samples from 350,000 per day pre-COVID, to 428,000 per day!

With the increased reliance on online services, including remote work and learning, e-commerce purchases and a greater adoption of e-wallets, the 2020 threat landscape appears to favour cybercriminals.

RMCO / PKPP in Malaysia : New SOP for December 2020!

Here is the new December 2020 SOP on what’s allowed and what’s not allowed during the RMCO / PKPP restrictions in Malaysia!

Malaysia : RMCO / PKPP Restrictions Until 31 December!

As extended restrictions are significantly impacting the economy, the Malaysia National Security Council (MKN) decided to lift the CMCO / PKPB lockdown on less affected areas :

Except for states under CMCO / PKPB lockdown, all other areas in Malaysia are under the more lenient RMCO (Recovery Movement Control Order) or PKPP (Perintah Kawalan Pergerakan Pemulihan) restrictions.

The RMCO / PKPB restrictions is scheduled to end on 31 December 2020.

 

Malaysia RMCO / PKPP : New December 2020 SOP!

Here is the new, updated MKN SOP on what’s allowed and what’s not allowed in RMCO / PKPP areas in Malaysia :

GENERAL

  • Nationwide travel is allowed, except to EMCO (PKPD) areas.
  • Private and commercial vehicles are allowed to carry up to their maximum passenger capacity.
  • High risk individuals and children are not encouraged to go out.
  • All activities and services at airports and ports are allowed.
  • Public transportation, like buses, express buses, LRT / MRT / ERL / Monorail / ferry / airlines / taxi / e-hailing vehicles are allowed to operate as normal.
  • Food delivery services are allowed to operate from 6 AM until 2 AM.

ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES

  • All business, economic and industrial activity can proceed as usual.
  • Businesses must ensure that customers are physically distanced by 1 meter while entering or leaving their premises.
  • Businesses must limit the number of customers within their premise, and publicly display the maximum number of customers allowed inside.
  • Businesses must ensure that customers check in using MySejahtera or write in the logbook.
  • Businesses must scan the body temperature of customers, and those with a body temperature of 37.5 °C are not permitted to enter.
  • All employees, suppliers and customers must wear a face mask at all times.
  • Supermarkets, shopping malls and retail stores are allowed to operate as usual.
  • Restaurants, food stores, food trucks, hawkers, food courts, food stalls, food kiosks, groceries and convenience stores are allowed to open from 6 AM until 2 AM.
  • Dine-in is allowed, with 1 meter distance between every person.
  • Daily, wholesale, farmer’s and night markets are allowed to open as usual.
  • Petrol stations are allowed to open as usual.
  • Laundry services are allowed to open as usual.
  • All other permitted businesses are allowed to operate as usual.
  • All other essential activities NOT listed in the Negative List are permitted, subject to the existing SOPs.

HEALTHCARE

  • Public and private clinics and hospitals are allowed to open 24 hours.
  • Pharmacies and drugstores are allowed to open as normal.

FISHING, FARMING, PLANTATION INDUSTRIES

  • The fishing, farming, plantation, livestock and related food chain industries are allowed to operate as normal.

RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES

  • All religious activities are allowed, subject to the relevant SOPs.

ENTERTAINMENT, RECREATION + CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

  • Entertainment centres, pubs and night clubs are forbidden to open, except for F&B services.
  • Theme parks, indoor playgrounds and cinemas are allowed to open.

CREATIVE INDUSTRY

  • All activities are allowed as usual, subject to the Creative Sector SOP.

SPORTS + RECREATION

  • All sports and recreational activities are allowed, subject to the Sports & Recreation Sector SOP.
  • Sporting events and competitions with spectators and/or with participants from other countries are forbidden.

EDUCATION

  • All public and private schools, institutions of higher learning, vocational training institutes, kindergartens, day care centres, tahfiz centres, public parks and recreation centres are allowed to operate as usual.
  • Tuition, music, dance, art, language classes are allowed to operate as usual.
  • Kindergartens, nurseries and childcare centres are allowed to operate as usual, subject to the SOP.

SEMINARS / WORKSHOPS / CONFERENCES

  • All seminars, workshops, courses, training, conferences, lectures and MICE (Meeting, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) are allowed, subject to SOP.
  • Face to face meetings in offices, hotels and convention centres are allowed, with physical distancing and the wearing of face masks.

CELEBRATIONS

  • Official and unofficial government and private ceremonies, and social events like weddings, banquets, engagement parties, aqiqah ceremonies, tahlil, birthdays, anniversary parties, reunions are allowed, subject to SOP.

TOURISM

  • All domestic tourism activities that cross into or out of the EMCO or CMCO areas (except green zones) are forbidden.
  • Overseas tourism is forbidden.
  • Domestic tourism involving foreign tourists (except from countries approved by the Minister) is forbidden.
  • Tour companies are allowed to operate, based on existing SOP.
  • Hotels are allowed to provide accommodation.
  • Restaurants, including F&B outlets and lounges are allowed.

MOH : No Change In Pfizer Vaccine Delivery, No Approval Yet

The Malaysia Ministry of Health just announced that there is no change in the delivery schedule of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. However, there is no approval yet…

 

Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine : What Is It?

The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is an mRNA vaccine called BNT162b2 designed by BioNTech.

It uses messenger RNA technology to teach our cells to create the SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins.

The presence of these spike proteins triggers the body’s immune system, training it to create antibodies that target the actual SARS-CoV-2 virus.

If we actually get infected by SARS-CoV-2 after being vaccinated, those antibodies will immediately attach to the virus particles :

  • preventing them from infecting our cells
  • cause the virus particles to stick together (agglutinate), making them easier targets
  • identifying the virus particles as targets for phagocytic cells to destroy

The immune response to the spike proteins will also train memory cells, so that they can respond to a future COVID-19 infection weeks or months after vaccination.

MOH : No Change In Pfizer Vaccine Delivery

On 27 November 2020, Malaysia announced the purchase of 12.8 million doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

They also announced that Malaysia will receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine in four tranches over the whole year :

  • Q1 2021 : 1 million doses
  • Q2 2021 : 1.7 million doses
  • Q3 2021 : 5.8 million doses
  • Q4 2021 : 4.3 million doses

But after the Wall Street Journal wrote about a 50% cut in 2020 production of the Pfizer vaccine, there were concerns that we may not even get the vaccine in Q1 2021.

The Malaysia Director General of Health, Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah, clarified on 6 December 2020 that the NPRA (National Pharmacutical Regulatory Agency) has not received any notification of vaccine delivery issues from Pfizer.

He assured the public that KKM is always monitoring developments, and receives advanced notice on the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

Therefore, as far as they are concerned, there has been no change in the delivery schedule.

MOH : No Approval Of Pfizer Vaccine Yet

The Malaysia DG Health also announced that the NPRA (National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency) has yet to approve the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for use in Malaysia.

In fact, they have yet to receive any documents from Pfizer for the evaluation of the registration and testing of the BNT162b2 vaccine.

Regardless of what the Pfizer vaccine delivery schedule is like, it must first be evaluated, tested and approved by KKM and the NPRA, before it can be used in Malaysia.

Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine : 2020 Production Cut By Half

On 3 December 2020, the Wall Street Journal revealed that Pfizer and BioNTech slashed by half the COVID-19 vaccines they were going to manufacture in 2020.

Instead of 100 million doses, they would only be able to manufacture 50 million doses of their BNT162b2 vaccine by the end of 2020.

That is only good enough to vaccinate up to 25 million people, because every person requires two doses.

That immediately knocked down Pfizer and BioNTech’s share prices by 2%, before recovering slightly.

 

Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine : 2020 Production Cut To 50 Million Doses

Pfizer and BioNTech originally hoped to roll out 100 million doses of their COVID-19 vaccine candidate – BNT162b2 vaccine – by the end of 2020.

But they were forced to announce a reduced goal of 50 million doses in their 9 November 2020 press release :

Along with the efficacy data generated from the clinical trial, Pfizer and BioNTech are working to prepare the necessary safety and manufacturing data to submit to the FDA to demonstrate the safety and quality of the vaccine product produced.

Based on current projections we expect to produce globally up to 50 million vaccine doses in 2020 and up to 1.3 billion doses in 2021.

The Wall Street Journal report was not incorrect, but many readers misinterpreted the change to be new.

The article came out almost a month AFTER the 9 November Pfizer press release.

Here are the reasons why Pfizer and BioNTech were forced to cut their production forecast, and what their 2021 production forecast is like.

The Clinical Trial Took Longer Than Expected

Their Phase 3 clinical trial, which started on 27 July 2020, took longer than anticipated. Ironically, this was due to its effectiveness.

The trial required a minimum of 164 confirmed COVID-19 cases, which they did not achieve when they announced the reduced production goal on 9 November 2020.

That milestone was only achieved in mid November, and announced on 18 November 2020.

Raw Materials Failed To Meet Standards

As explained in the WSJ article, Pfizer started to work on the COVID-19 vaccine supply chain in March, sourcing raw materials from suppliers in the US and Europe.

However, “early batches of the raw materials failed to meet the standards“, said a person directly involved in the development of the Pfizer vaccines.

And even though they fixed the problems, they “ran out of time to meet this year’s projected shipments“.

This Was Much Faster Than Usual

As WSJ also pointed out – pharmaceutical companies do not typically set up supply chains and manufacturing lines for a product that has not yet been approved.

So even the ability to produce 50 million doses by the end of the year is phenomenally fast, especially when the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine was only approved by the UK MHRA, and has yet to be approved by the US FDA or EU EMA.

This was only possible because Pfizer set up their supply chain early, while the early trials just started.

1.35 Billion vs 1.4 Billion Difference

While their 2020 production goal was slashed by half to 50 million doses, that isn’t a big difference in the grand scheme of things.

Pfizer says that they are on track to produce 1.3 billion doses in 2021. So the production difference by the end of 2021 is really 1.35 billion versus 1.4 billion – a shortfall of 3.6%.

The problem with the Pfizer-Biontech and Moderna mRNA vaccines really isn’t how many they can produce in 2020. It’s how few they can actually produce in 2021.

Changes In Vaccine Shipment Schedule?

Is there any change in Pfizer’s vaccine shipment schedule? That depends.

If the delivery schedule was announced before 9 November 2020, it is likely to be affected somewhat.

But if delivery was announced after 9 November 2020, then it stands to reason that it would be based on the current 50 million dose forecast for 2020.

Take, for example, Malaysia’s purchase of 12.8 million doses on 27 November 2020. The scheduled delivery of 1 million doses in Q1 2021 should not be affected by the 9 November 2020 announcement.

Sony PG Tec Facility Will Close By September 2021!

Sony has decided to close their PG Tec manufacturing facility, which spans a land area of 172,000 m², with a total built-up area of 95,000 m².

Based in the Prai Industrial Zone, the Sony PG Tec facility produces audio products like the WH-1000XM3 and WP-SP900 headphones, wireless speakers, home theatre systems and Blu-ray players.

It is also the home of a local Sony R&D team that designed the Sony MHC-V81D sound system, amongst other audio products.

 

Penang Gov Confirms That Sony Will Close PG Tec Facility

Dato’ Haji Abdul Halim, the Penang Trade, Industry and Entrepreneur Development Exco, confirmed the decision, stating that the Penang state government will hold a press conference to address the matter.

According to him, the decision to close this high-tech manufacturing facility was due to “internal restructuring due to fierce market competition”.

The 3,400 or so employees at the Sony PG Tec facility will be offered a severance plan, or relocation to the Sony EMCS factory in Bangi, Selangor.

Some 1,800 employees are local, while another 1,600 are foreigners.

The Sony EMCS PG Tec facility is still operating at the moment, and will close in stages, fully ceasing operation in September 2021.

AMD CDNA Architecture : Tech Highlights!

In addition to the gaming-centric RDNA architecture, AMD just introduced a new CDNA architecture that is optimised for compute workloads.

Here are some key tech highlights of the new AMD CDNA architecture!

 

AMD CDNA Architecture : What Is It?

Unlike the fixed-function graphics accelerators of the past, GPUs are now fully-programmable accelerators using what’s called the GPGPU (General Purpose GPU) Architecture.

GPGPU allowed the industry to leverage their tremendous processing power for machine learning and scientific computing purposes.

Instead of continuing down the GPGPU path, AMD has decided to introduce two architectures :

  • AMD RDNA : optimised for gaming to maximise frames per second
  • AMD CDNA : optimised for compute workloads to maximise FLOPS per second.

Designed to accelerate compute workloads, AMD CDNA augments scalar and vector processing with new Matrix Core Engines, and adds Infinity Fabric technology for scale-up capability.

This allows the first CDNA-based accelerator – AMD Instinct MI100 – to break the 10 TFLOPS per second (FP64) barrier.

The GPU is connected to its host processor using a PCI Express 4.0 interface, that delivers up to 32 GB/s of bandwidth in both directions.

 

AMD CDNA Architecture : Compute Units

The command processor and scheduling logic receives API-level commands and translates them into compute tasks.

These compute tasks are implemented as compute arrays and managed by the four Asynchronous Compute Engines (ACE), which maintain their independent stream of commands to the compute units.

Its 120 compute units (CUs) are derived from the earlier GCN architecture, and organised into four compute engines that execute wavefronts that contain 64 work-items.

The CUs are, however, enhanced with new Matrix Core Engines, that are optimised for matrix data processing.

Here is the block diagram of the AMD Instinct MI100 accelerator, showing how its main blocks are all tied together with the on-die Infinity Fabric.

Unlike the RDNA architecture, CDNA removes all of the fixed-function graphics hardware for tasks like rasterisation, tessellation, graphics caches, blending and even the display engine.

CDNA retains the dedicated logic for HEVC, H.264 and VP9 decoding that is sometimes used for compute workloads that operate on multimedia data.

The new Matrix Core Engines add a new family of wavefront-level instructions – the Matrix Fused Multiply-Add (MFMA). The MFMA instructions perform mixed-precision arithmetic and operates on KxN matrices using four different types of input data :

  • INT8 – 8-bit integers
  • FP16 – 16-bit half-precision
  • bf16 – 16-bit brain FP
  • FP32 – 32-bit single-precision

The new Matrix Core Engines has several advantages over the traditional vector pipelines in GCN :

  • the execution unit reduces the number of register file reads, since many input values are reused in a matrix multiplication
  • narrower datatypes create opportunity for workloads that do not require full FP32 precision, e.g. machine learning – saving energy.

 

AMD CDNA Architecture : L2 Cache + Memory

Most scientific and machine learning data sets are gigabytes or even terabytes in size. Therefore L2 cache and memory performance is critical.

In CDNA, the L2 cache is shared across the entire chip, and physically partitioned into multiple slices.

The MI100, specifically, has an 8 MB cache that is 16-way set-associative and made up of 32 slices. Each slice can sustain 128 bytes for an aggregate bandwidth of over 6 TB/s across the GPU.

The CDNA memory controller can drive 4- or 8-stacks high of HBM2 memory at 2.4 GT/s for a maximum throughput of 1.23 TB/s.

The memory contents are also protected by hardware ECC.

 

AMD CDNA Architecture : Communication + Scaling

CDNA is also designed for scaling up, using the high-speed Infinity Fabric technology to connect multiple GPUs.

AMD Infinity Fabric links are 16-bits wide, and operate at 23 GT/s, with three links in CDNA to allow for full connectivity in a quad-GPU configuration.

While the last generation Radeon Instinct MI50 GPU only uses a ring topology, the new fully-connected Infinity Fabric topology boosts performance for common communication patterns like all-reduce and scatter / gather.

Unlike PCI Express, Infinity Fabric links support coherent GPU memory, which lets multiple GPUs share an address space and tightly work on a single task.
