Remote Control Electricity Saver On Facebook / WhatsApp

After TNB started introducing expanding the installation of the new smart digital meter, people noticed that their electricity bills shot up significantly.

This led scammers to introduce “electricity saving devices”, and the latest one is this Remote Control Electricity Saver that is being promoted on Facebook and WhatsApp.

This Remote Control Electricity Saver (超省电) claims to let you cheat the new digital electricity meter by turning it on and off remotely.

  • Only applicable for digital meter
  • No tracking on adjusting the meter
  • No evidence left to show illegal action
  • Not required to remove the current meter

It is being advertised on Facebook (with our English translation).

Remote Control Electricity Saver : Bullshit Scam!

Electricity saving devices DO NOT WORK, period.

So if you see anyone selling them, it’s a scam. You are better off just giving your money to a charity… or to me.

Feel free to ask for my bank account number. At least, you will be supporting my work!

Now, here are the reasons why this Remote Control Electricity Saver is a scam, like all other electricity saving devices!

Reason #1 : The Videos Are So Fake

The videos they use as “evidence” are so fake. They basically shows the scammer turning the electricity meter on and off using the Remote Control Electricity Saver.

In reality, one scammer just turns an electrical appliance on and off, whenever his/her partner turns the Remote Control Electricity Saver off and on.

What does it prove? Absolutely nothing!

Reason #2 : The Device Looks Like A Piece Of Shit

These scammers do not even bother to make their Remote Control Electricity Saver look decent.

It looks like a cheap toy from the bargain bin in the 1980s – a crude black plastic box with tiny buttons and two LED lights. Something kids might pretend is a remote detonator for a toy bomb.

Reason #3 : It Doesn’t Even Pretend To Use A Capacitor

Electricity saving devices use a capacitor to improve the Power Factor* for inefficient devices like fans, fluorescent light ballast and voltage transformers.

By claiming to control the digital meter remotely, it doesn’t even pretend to use a capacitor! What it really claims to do is MAGICALLY stop the digital meter from recording your electricity usage.

* Important Note : Capacitor-based electricity saving devices are still a scam because utility companies do NOT charge residential or small business users for “reactive power” – electricity loss due to Power Factor inefficiency. So it doesn’t matter whether you improve your Power Factor or not – you are only charged for the actual power that is used, and not power that is lost.

Reason #4 : The Man Has Nothing To Do With The Scam

The scammers misappropriated a picture of Liaw San, a retiree from Kajang, making it look like he endorsed their product.

Liaw Sam gained infamy in 2014 when he was slapped with a RM 11,656 (~US$2,914) electricity bill, instead of his usual electricity bill of RM 50~RM200.

GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop Mining : The New Craze!

Supplies of desktop graphics cards are low, and prices are sky-high, and here’s more bad news – miners are coming for the laptops too!

A Weibo blogger called 神鱼BTCer just shared photos of different GeForce RTX 30 series laptop mining rigs!

BTCer claims they are all “home-based”, but we have no idea whether they are his, or from different cryptocurrency mining operations.

But in a response to a question, he said that the best way to keep them cool is by putting them in a sort of “tent mode”.

This picture shows four stacks of GeForce RTX 3060 laptops made by Chinese OEM Hasee, powered on (you can see the green light).

Hasee offers a GeForce RTX 3060 gaming laptop that has a starting price of just RMB 6,499 (approximately RM4,089 / US$1,005 / £732 / A$1,309 / S$1,340).

These twenty Hasee GeForce RTX 30 series gaming laptops would cost just over US$20,000.

This seems like a waste of power – leaving their displays turned on. But leaving the display up would definitely improve cooling.

 

How Much Money Can RTX 3060 Laptop Mining Rigs Make?

A Bilibili content creator Fish Pond f2pool demonstrated how fast someone with a GeForce RTX 3060 laptop can “mine” cryptocurrency.

She plugged in her GeForce RTX 3060 laptop into a power socket at Starbucks, and mined 0.00053009 ETH over 2 hours while she sipped her coffee.

On 5 February 2021, Ethereum closed at US$1,680.497, so she mined enough during her coffee break to make US$0.89 or RMB 5.76.

Not quite enough to pay for her coffee (about RMB 28), but at least the electricity is FREE!

Based on her experience, we can guesstimate that the average GeForce RTX 3060 laptop will be able to produce :

  • 0.000265045 ETH per hour
  • 0.00636108 ETH per day
  • 0.1908324 ETH per month (30 days)
  • 2.3217942 ETH per year

So that mining rig with 20 Hasee laptops you saw up there could make, at current prices, about :

  • $8.908 per hour
  • $213.80 per day
  • $6,413.87 per month (30 days)
  • $78,035 per year

Chinese electricity costs about RMB 0.545 (US$0.084) per kWh.

Assuming each laptop uses about 250 watts of power (including whatever external fans he may have), that works out to about US$3,679.20 per year.

So his net profit for the 20-laptop mining rig would be US$74,356 per year, at current prices.

That’s an incredible ROI of 30.8% per month, which means he will recover the cost of the entire rig ($20,100) in just under 3.5 months!

This is actually 2.9X higher ROI than the 78-card GeForce RTX 3080 mining rig!

With such great ROI, you can count on cryptocurrency miners to buy up hoards of GeForce RTX 30 series laptops!

You may have seen Simon Byrne’s crypto-mining rig, that uses 78 GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards arranged in an array of 13 x 6 cards.

That 78-card RTX 3080 mining rig, which he calls Bertha 2, is almost operational. And he’s keeping it cool with 120 fans, with RGB, of course! It is said – RGB makes thing go faster? 😉

In this picture, you can see most of the GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards powered up. When fully operational, it should deliver 6.5 gigahashes per second!

In case you are wondering what Berta – his first-generation mining rig – looks like, here is a photo he shared :

He created Bertha 1 using 130 Zotac GeForce RTX 1080 Ti graphics cards, in January 2018 – 3 years ago!

 

How Much Money Can This RTX 3080 Crypto Mining Rig Make?

Just how much money can Simon make from this crypto-mining rig?

Officially, RTX 3080 cards start at $699, but due to the shortage of cards, they are now selling for about $1,199 each.

So the cards in this rig alone would cost approximately $93,522. Let’s call it a flat $100,000 for the whole rig, plus power supplies.

The average commercial electricity rate in Las Vegas (where he’s based) is 8.43 cents per kWh. So electricity should cost about $1444 per month. Let’s make that $2166 per month (+50%) to account for cooling costs.

Each GeForce RTX 3080 has a hash rate of 83.57 MH/s using the Ethash (Phoenix) algorithm, which should generate approximately 0.22236870 ETH worth US$165 every month.

So the total rig of 78 cards should generate 17.3447586 ETH worth $12,840 per month. Deducting electricity costs, that’s a net profit of $10,674 per month or $128,088 per year!

That’s an incredible ROI of 10.7% per month, which means he recovers the cost of the entire rig in just under 9.5 months.

No wonder crypto miners are buying up graphics cards by the pallets… at the expense of PC gamers all around the world!

Simon assured gamers that he doesn’t buy his cards from the regular retail supply chain. However, the large-scale purchase of graphics cards for crypto-mining is a major cause of graphics card shortage across the world.

TNB During MCO : No Electricity Bill? Here’s How To Pay!

TNB employees will no longer read the meter or issue any electricity bill during the COVID-19 MCO, but you still need to pay your electricity bill!

TNB Meter Reading + Bill Rendering : Stopped During MCO!

After the Movement Control Order (MCO) started, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) announced that they would stop these operations from 20 March 2020 until further notice :

  • on-premise meter reading, and
  • on-premise rendering of electricity bill

They also announced that :

  • you will be issued an estimated bill, based on your previous month’s consumption.
  • your bill will be adjusted only when they resume meter reading, after the MCO period ends.
  • during the MCO, TNB will not deliver any printed electricity bill to your premise.

You still need to pay your TNB electricity bill during the MCO / CMCO. Just because you don’t get your bill, doesn’t mean you get to stop paying.

 

Won’t TNB Resume Meter Reading + Bill Rendering During CMCO?

On 13 May 2020, TNB announced that they are resuming meter reading and bill rendering on a staggered basis, and only in green zone states :

  • Perlis
  • Penang
  • Kedah
  • Perak (except Sri Manjung)
  • Kelantan

That basically means they still won’t perform meter reading for most of the country during the Conditional MCO period.

 

How To Pay Your TNB Bill During MCO / CMCO?

There are three ways to handle your TNB electricity bill during the MCO / CMCO.

Option 1 : Pay The Estimated Bill

TNB mentioned that you will be issued an estimated bill, based on your last bill. If your last bill was RM 100, then your estimated bill during the MCO will be RM 100.

All you have to do is continue paying based on your last bill every month, as long as the Movement Control Order is in effect.

Just pay online through JomPAY using your online banking account.

Option 2 : Use TNB Express Payment

The easiest way to check your current bill and make payment is through myTNB.

Just key in your 12-digit TNB account number, and you will receive the current amount due.

You can pay up to RM 250 using a credit or debit card through Express Payment by clicking Next.

If you wish to pay more than RM 250 though, you will need to first register and log into myTNB.

Alternatively, you can pay through JomPAY using your online banking account.

Option 3 : Use myTNB App

The third option is to install and use the myTNB app, which is available as a free download on both Google Play Store and App Store :
