Apple Cancels Project Titan Autonomous Electric Car!

Apple just cancelled Project Titan – its long-running effort to build an autonomous electric car! Here is what we know so far…

Apple Cancels Project Titan Autonomous Electric Car!

Apple has finally decided to pull the plug on Project Titan – its long-running and highly-secret effort to build an electric car or autonomous vehicle.

All work on the project has stopped, and Apple is likely to cut hundreds of people from the team. There are about 1,400 employees currently working on Project Titan.

Only some employees will be shifted to its generative AI projects under John Giannandrea, Apple’s senior vice president of Machine Learning and AI Strategy. All other employees will have 90 days to find a reassignment to other roles in Apple, or be let go.

On Tuesday, 27 February 2024, Apple Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams, and the vice president in charge of Project Titan, Kevin Lynch, announced the news to the team in a short meeting that lasted just 12 minutes. They did not take questions, according to an employee who was there.

According to this employee, who remains anonymous, the announcement was abrupt but the decision was not. It appears to be a long time coming, with constantly shifting priorities within Apple.

Apple first started working on its Project Titan car project in 2014, oscillating its focus between making an all-electric car to compete with Tesla, and developing a fully autonomous vehicle more like Waymo. The project’s leadership would repeatedly change its focus, under pressure from top executives and the Apple board.

Unfortunately, the team is apparently still years away from producing a viable vehicle, whether it is just an electric car, or a fully-autonomous vehicle, despite reportedly spending up to $1 billion annually.

In response to Apple’s decision to kill off its electric car, Tesla CEO Elon Musk posted emojis of a salute and a cigarette on X (formerly known as Twitter).

5 Reasons Why Apple Cancelled Project Titan Electric Car

After spending a decade and many billions of dollars on Project Titan, the decision could not have been easy. Here are the five reasons Apple scraped its electric car project, according to Bloomberg:

  • The strategy for Apple electric was constantly changing with no consistent plan nor approach.
  • There was a revolving door of leadership.
  • The electric car was still years away from being commercially viable, which concerned Apple.
  • Self-driving technology is tricky and challenging.
  • The electric vehicle market has been stagnating due to poor charging infrastructure, which soured Apple’s optimism.

While Apple’s electric car dreams has now ended, it doesn’t mean that all of its efforts have gone to waste. It is likely that the company will salvage and repurpose (maybe even licence out) the technologies its team developed.

Did Tesla Cars Catch Fire + Explode After Accident?!

Did two Tesla electric cars catch fire, and explode spectacularly, after colliding in an accident?!

Take a look at the viral video, and find out what the facts really are!

Claim : Video Shows Tesla Cars On Fire + Exploding After Accident!

A video has gone viral on WhatsApp and social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, with people claiming that it shows two electric vehicles, or Tesla cars, catching fire and exploding spectacularly, after colliding in an accident!

AlphaFox : This is what happens when one Tesla catches on fire.

BUDA : Tesla car battery exploding #tesla #elonmusk @elonmusk $TSLA

An incredible video, showing what can happen when two EVs collide. Note that both sides of the freeway have been shut down and there are no fire apparatus present because, once a lithium battery ignites, it cannot be easily extinguished and the fumes are toxic.

Truth : Video Does NOT Show Tesla Cars On Fire + Exploding!

This is yet another example of FAKE NEWS circulating on WhatsApp, and social media platforms, and here are there reasons why…

Fact #1 : Video Was Recorded In Moscow, Russia

First, let me start by pointing out that the viral video was recorded on the Moscow Automobile Ring Road (MKAD).

Fact #2 : Video Was Recorded In July 2013

Next, you should know that the incident did not happen recently. In fact, it actually occurred on 13/14 July 2013 – more than 10 years ago!

Although the Tesla Roadster was displayed in Moscow as early as June 30, 2010, Tesla never sold any electric cars officially in Russia. Instead, Tesla enthusiasts in Russia imported them in by themselves, through a “Tesla Club”.

Even as late as 2020, there were only about 500 Tesla electric cars in Russia, with 400 of them sold through the Russian “Tesla Club”. Therefore, it is virtually impossible for two Tesla electric cars to be involved in an accident in Russia, in 2013…

Fact #3 : Exploding Vehicle Was A Propane Gas Truck!

The truth is – the incident involved a truck that was carrying propane gas tanks. No electric vehicles were involved.

In the video above, you can see that the propane gas truck driver was speeding, and slammed into the back of a grey van / mini bus that was changing lanes to the right.

The accident caused the 36 propane gas tanks to burst and catch fire. Some of them exploded spectacularly, while others flew around like rockets!

Despite the ferocity of the fire and explosions, no one died in the accident. The truck driver can be seen running away from the exploding gas tanks.

Did Tesla Cars Catch Fire + Explode After Accident?!

Fact #4 : There Were Firefighters

The viral video does not show any firefighters, because it is only one minute long. The original video, which is over 8 minutes long, shows Russian police and firefighters arriving on the scene within minutes.

However, it seemed safer to just let the truck burn completely, as the propane gas tanks were still exploding and flying around. In fact, a Russian police car was almost hit by one of those flying gas tanks, and quickly beat a hasty retreat!

Fact #5 : Lithium Battery Fires Are Hard To Put Out

It is true that the lithium ion batteries used in electric vehicles can catch fire, and these lithium fires are notoriously hard to put out. Firefighters generally need to dump a ton of water on the burning electric vehicle for several hours.

That is why it is generally a good idea to simply let the electric vehicle burn itself out, unless the fire is threatening life or other property.

Electric vehicles will burn furiously, but they won’t explode like what was shown in the viral video. Those are, again, pressurised propane tanks exploding.

Fact #6 : Electric Vehicles Are Less Likely To Catch Fire

Electric vehicles can and do catch fire during car accidents, especially when their lithium ion battery packs are damaged or ruptured by the impact.

However, their overall fire risk is lower than internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. According to AutoinsuranceEZ, ICE vehicles are 60X more likely to catch fire than an electric vehicle.

The riskiest are hybrid vehicles – they are 130X more likely to catch fire than an electric vehicle! The much higher fire risk in hybrid vehicles is likely due to the fact they have both a lithium-ion battery, and a gas tank filled with combustible fuel.

The First 11 Tesla Supercharger Locations In Malaysia!

As well as announcing that the Model Y is now available for order in Malaysia, Tesla also listed 11 Supercharger locations!

Tesla Supercharger : What Is It?

The Tesla Supercharger is a fast-charging station for Tesla and compatible electric vehicles, that delivers up to 250 kW of high-voltage direct current power. Think of the Supercharger as an electric “refuelling” station for your Tesla car.

Tesla Superchargers allow you to quickly recharge your electric vehicle – a 15 minute recharge can add up to 261 km / 200 miles of range. Not as fast as refuelling an internal combustion engine vehicle at the petrol station, but much faster than charging at home!

While some Tesla cars come with free supercharging for life, most models have annual or one-time credits. Then users are billed by the energy consumed. On top of that, an idle fee may be charged if you leave your car plugged into the Supercharge after charging is complete.

Globally, there are over 45,000 Supercharger stations, making it the largest fast charging network in the world. But there are currently none in Malaysia…

Tesla Lists 11 Supercharger Locations In Malaysia!

On Friday, 14 July 2023, Tesla started opening the order book for three Tesla Model Y trims in Malaysia, with delivery estimated to take place only in early 2024.

While Tesla did not announce it, its website now lists 11 Supercharger locations that it plans to install in Malaysia.

Penang

  • Perai, near the intersection between the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway (BKE) and Jalan Permatang Pauh

Perak

  • Ipoh, along the PLUS North-South Highway, near Jalan Tambun

Kuala Lumpur

  • Bukit Tunku, along Jalan Kuching, near Lebuhraya Sultan Iskandar (formerly Mahameru)
  • Along Jalan Sultan Ismail, next to the Klang River
  • Bukit Bintang, near the Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Raja Chulan intersection
  • Cheras, on the MEX Highway, near Jalan Cheras.
  • Bukit Jalil, near the Lebuhraya Bukit Jail and Jalan Barat intersection at Technology Park Malaysia.

Selangor

  • Petaling Jaya – near the intersection between the KESAS and LDP highways in Puchong
  • Dengkil, along the ELITE highway

Negeri Sembilan

  • Along the PLUS North-South Highway, near Jalan Rantau-Pedas

Johor

  • Iskandar Puteri, along the Second Link Expressway, near the Tanjung Pelepas Highway

Please note that these locations are subject to change, and their target opening dates have not been announced. However, it is highly likely that all eleven locations will go “live” by the time the first Tesla Model Y cars are delivered to their owners.

While Tesla has only revealed 11 locations so far, you can count on it to add more over time. After all, Singapore already has ten Supercharger stations!

In addition, these 11 Tesla Superchargers only cover the West coast of Peninsular Malaysia, with zero coverage on the East coast, and none in Sabah and Sarawak.

GeForce RTX 3080 Mining Rig Inside A BMW i8 Hybrid!

Take a look at this mining rig with SIX GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards, in the trunk of a BMW i8 hybrid sports car!

GeForce RTX 3080 Mining Rig Inside A BMW i8 Hybrid!

Simon Byrne is at it again – trolling gamers with his GeForce RTX 3080 mining rigs!

This time, he created a mining rig with six GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards, right in the trunk of a BMW i8 hybrid sports car.

The only practical use for the trunk of an i8 is to home a 6 x RTX 3080 mining rig.

*no gamers were harmed in the making of this photo.

BMW i8 RTX 3080 Mining Rig : Trolling Gamers

As impressive as it looks, this really isn’t a practical mining operation. He probably created it just to troll gamers who are finding it hard to get decently-priced graphics cards.

World’s Most Expensive Mining Case

The BMW i8 has a starting MSRP of US$147,500 in Nevada. That would make it the world’s most expensive mining case.

Power Consumption

The six GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards alone would consume 2 kilowatts of power at full power, with the entire mining rig using some 2.5 kW of power.

We can only see a single EVGA SuperNOVA 1600 T2 PSU, so he’s either underclocking the cards, or there is another PSU out-of-sight.

The BMW i8 has a 11.6 kWh lithium-ion battery, with a usable capacity of 8.7 kWh. That’s only enough to run the mining rig for 4-5 hours.

BMW i8 battery pack

Thermal Output

Of course, you can plug in the i8 or keep its engine running, but the mining rig still generates a tremendous amount of heat.

Even in a cold environment (it’s about 5°C in Nevada in January), the BMW i8’s rear hatch must be kept open to avoid the cards from overheating.

Invitation To Smash & Grab!

And that’s just inviting theft or a hold-up. Especially when these GeForce RTX 3080 cards command premium prices all over the world!

This is definitely an impressive showcase, but Simon is no doubt making the bulk of his cryptocurrency using serious rigs like this 78-card mining rig we showed earlier.

The Goodyear + Envoy Predictive Tyre Maintenance Program

Goodyear just announced a pilot program with Envoy Technologies to provide their predictive tyre maintenance solution for Envoy’s fleet of on-demand electric vehicles. Here are the details!

The Goodyear + Envoy Predictive Tyre Maintenance Program

The Goodyear and Envoy predictive tyre maintenance program will launch in Ohio this year, as a way to minimise operational downtime for the Envoy fleet of electric vehicles.

  • Goodyear’s predictive tyre maintenance solution will be used to forecast and automatically schedule needed tyre maintenance and replacement.
  • Envoy’s fleet managers will be able to see their vehicle fleet status, schedule maintenance needs and update appointments with Goodyear’s on-demand scheduling program

This will help Enjoy keep their electric vehicles operational and avoid unforeseen tyre issues that may force a shared electric vehicle to be pulled from service.

How The Predictive Tyre Maintenance Program Works

The Goodyear predictive tyre maintenance service will gather secure, anonymised data from Envoy’s connected vehicles and uses it to predict and schedule service needs.\

Goodyear then utilises its network of outlets and mobile vans to provide service to the vehicles. These mobile vans can install tyres on-site at their charging stations, maintaining vehicle safety with minimal time required by Envoy staff.

Goodyear earlier trialed the same predictive tyre maintenance program with Tesloop, a city-to-city mobility service that is based exclusively on Tesla electric vehicles.

It also leveraged their experience with the Goodyear Proactive Solutions for truck fleets, which uses advanced telematics and predictive analytics to maximise fuel efficiency while identifying and resolving tyre-related issues before they happen.

Envoy Electric Vehicles

Envoy provides shared, community-based electric vehicles where people live, work and stay, with a significant percentage of its fleet dedicated to deployment in disadvantaged communities.

The two-year-old company recently passed a milestone of more than 100 vehicles deployed at partner sites with a pipeline of 1,800 vehicles to be launched in major metropolitan areas across the nation, including Portland, Seattle, Austin, Chicago, New York, Boston, Miami and Washington, D.C.

The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQ Showcase + Test Drive!

Mercedes-Benz showed off their Concept EQ SUV crossover at an exclusive media event. They even took it out for a short test drive, and let us have a close-up look. Here is our extensive coverage of this fully-electric concept vehicle!

The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQ Showcase

Mercedes-Benz will market future battery-electric vehicles under the brand name EQ, which stands for “Electric Intelligence” and is derived from the Mercedes-Benz brand values of “Emotion and Intelligence”.

The close-to-production concept vehicle Concept EQ marks the launch of an architecture for battery-electric vehicles across all models. Who better to explain its key features than Mark Raine of Mercedes-Benz?

New Electro Look

The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQ combines elements of an SUV with the character of a coupé, with a new electro-look – a gleaming black bonnet with a dark-tinted panoramic roof, that contrast strikingly against the alubeam silver paintwork.

The concealed windscreen wipers, cameras instead of exterior mirrors and an absence of conventional door handles, emphasise its stretched silhouette. The “Black Panel” front grille features illuminated LED optical fibres in electric blue, with matching rear lamps.

Driver-Oriented Cockpit

The driver-oriented cockpit is based on simple, touch-based controls with a new electro-look. The asymmetrical design of the instrument panel with its large, floating wide-screen display gives us a peek into the future of driver interface at Mercedes-Benz.

As the Concept EQ is devoid of conventional exterior mirrors, cameras are used to project an image of the traffic behind onto integrated displays in the doors. Both the door openers and the electric window lifters are also touch-controlled.

Avant-Garde Interior

Concept EQ comes with four individual seats, with a tailored sound experience is provided by speakers integrated into the head restraints. The side bolsters are covered in light-white leather, and rose gold pixel rain perforations. TFT monitors are integrated into the front backrests for rear-seat entertainment.

Concept EQ Power + Range

The Concept EQ is powered by two electric motors on the front and rear axles, and a lithium-ion battery embedded in the floor. With a total output of up to 300 kW in the most powerful variant, and a maximum torque of up to 700 Newton metres, Concept EQ accelerates to 100 km/h in under five seconds.

Unfortunately, Mercedes-Benz did not demonstrate the power of the electric drive in their test drive. In this video, you can see the Mercedes team took the Concept EQ for a spin at a sedate pace.

All that performance is useless without a powerful battery. The Concept EQ comes with a 70 kWh battery that gives it a range of up to 500 kilometres, as well as the latest-generation charging technologies.

It is ready for charging at home by induction or a plug point, as well as fast charging using the Combined Charging System (CCS). This European charging standard allows for fast charging with a far greater capacity than at present.

Currently, charging capacities from 50 up to sometimes 150 kW are possible. In the medium to long term, a charging capacity of even up to 300 kW is planned. This would enable sufficient power for 100 locally emission-free kilometres to be recharged within five minutes.

Driver Assistance Systems

The Concept EQ also features the latest driver assistance systems from Mercedes-Benz.

[adrotate group=”2″]

Using highly accurate maps from HERE, it is aware of the precise curve radii as well as the position and size of a roundabout. This allows the Concept EQ to automatically adjust the speed and driving dynamics to give the driver even greater comfort and relaxation.

The Concept EQ is equipped with Car-to-X technology and can exchange information with the infrastructure and other vehicles, thus taking a further step in the direction of accident prevention. It is also helpful for the driver to be informed about nearby recharging opportunities.

As soon as Concept EQ realises that the destination cannot be reached on the available battery charge, it advises the driver of appropriate options on the navigation map.
