Scam Alert : TnG eWallet 5th Anniversary Survey!

Scam Alert : TnG eWallet 5th Anniversary Survey!

Please watch out for the TnG eWallet 5th Anniversary survey scam!

Find out why it is just a SCAM, and WARN your family and friends!

TnG eWallet 5th Anniversary Survey Scam Alert!

People are now sharing the TnG eWallet 5th Anniversary messages on WhatsApp :

Touch n’Go eWallet 5th Anniversary!

Click to enter to participate in the survey, have a chance to win 2000 Ringgit .

TnG eWallet 5th Anniversary Survey : Why This Is A Scam

Unfortunately, this is yet another survey scam, like the FamilyMart 70th Anniversary scam!

For one thing – the TnG eWallet was only launched in July 2017, so it would only be celebrating its 5th anniversary in July 2022!

TnG eWallet also confirmed that this survey is a scam.

I know many of us are in dire straits during this COVID-19 pandemic, having lost jobs, income or even loved ones.

Unfortunately, scammers are counting on our desperation to prey on us, using the same survey scam they have been using for years :

Now, let me show you how to spot these scams next time!

If you spot any of these warning signs, DO NOT PROCEED and DO NOT SHARE!

Warning Sign #1 : Bad Grammar

Most of these scammers do not have a good command of the English language, so if you spot bad grammar, stay away.

This scammer even got the spelling of the brand wrong! It’s Touch ‘n Go, not Touch n’Go.

Proper contests or events sponsored by major brands like TnG eWallet will have a PR or marketing person who will vet the text before allowing it to be posted.

Warning Sign #2 : Offering You Free Money Or Gifts

Please do NOT be naive. No one is going to give you money or free gifts just to participate in a survey!

Touch ‘n Go isn’t going to give you so much FREE money, just because it’s their anniversary.

They are a corporation whose business is to make money, not a charity to give you free money.

Warning Sign #3 : Not Using The Real Domain

A genuine Touch ‘n Go campaign would use their real domain – www.touchngo.com.my, not di47823.shop as shown in the scam post above.

Or they would run it off the official TnG eWallet page on Facebook – www.facebook.com/touchngoewallet/.

If you see nonsensical domains like childrerdg.xyz, uglyarticle.club, ldxqw.bar, etc. that’s a sign of a SCAM!

Warning Sign #4 : Asking You To Forward The Offer

No matter how many times you “try” this scam, you will ALWAYS win the RM 2000 “prize”.

If you don’t find that odd, you should know that no brand will insist that you must share the offer with 5 groups or 20 friends on WhatsApp.

Do not click to forward their offer to your family and friends. They will not appreciate being scammed with your help!

Warning Sign #5 : Asking You To Download + Register An App

If you click through and joined the fake survey scam, you may eventually be asked to download and register for an app.

That is VERY DANGEROUS. Never agree to download and register for any unknown app from a website.

Always download your apps from an official App Store like Google Play Store (for Android smartphones) and Apple App Store (for iPhones).

GrabPay Scam : Don’t Link Your Debit Card / Bank Account!

Beware of a new GrabPay scam that can quickly suck your debit cards and bank account dry!

Don’t link your debit card or bank account with GrabPay, and SHARE this warning with your family and friends!

GrabPay Scam Alert : Don’t Link Your Bank Account!

On 16 May 2020, Muhammad Syahir recounted how he was cheated of almost RM 900 through a GrayPay scam. Here is a brief summary of what happened :

  • The scammer created a new Instagram account, pretending to be the victim’s friend.
  • He messaged the victim asking for his phone number.
  • After receiving the victim’s phone number, he messaged him through Instagram to tell him about the GrabPay 8th Anniversary Campaign.
  • The victim was asked to look out for a GrabPay code, which would reveal what he won.

  • After sending the GrabPay code (not a TAC code) to the scammer, the victim saw RM 425 being debited into his GrabPay account. Unbeknownst to him, that money was from his own bank account!
  • A few minutes later, the victim received a notification that the RM 425 was paid to UNIPIN (M) SDN. BHD.
  • The scammer messaged him again on Instagram, asking for a second code that was sent to the victim.
  • The victim then received another notification from GrabPay stating that another RM 425 was paid to UNIPIN (M) SDN. BHD.
  • After that, the scammer blocked the victim on Instagram. That was when the victim got suspicious.
  • When the victim checked his bank account, he discovered that he lost RM 896.30 to the scammer.
  • In total, the scammer made 5 withdrawals through GrabPay – four from his debit card, and one from his bank account.

Another person – Patrick Saw – also fell for the same GrabPay scam, losing RM 405.

GrabPay Scam Alert : GrabPay Flaws?

Muhammad Syahir highlighted what he felt were major flaws with GrabPay :

  1. GrabPay allows credit / debit card transactions without CVV verification or OTP from the bank.
  2. GrabPay will not notify you about any first-time login attempt of a different gadget in a different location.
  3. GrabPay does not require users to set-up a secured PIN for any big transactions – e.g. more than RM100.
  4. If your bank account is linked to your GrabPay e-wallet, there won’t be any SMS notification for bank transfers to your e-wallet.

According to his experience, the scammer only needed to use the Grab Activation Code to withdraw money from all bank accounts / debit cards linked to your GrabPay app.

GrabPay Scam Alert : How To Avoid It?

To avoid falling prey to such a scam, here is what you should do :

  • NEVER accept a friendship request from a new social media account, until you have verified with your friend (through a phone call or face-to-face) that he/she created that new account.
  • NEVER send any code you receive to anyone. Even if it is a friend, why does he/she need the code that was sent to YOU?
  • Businesses will never give away free money for anniversaries. Don’t fall for such an old trick!
  • NEVER link your debit card or bank account to an e-wallet. Only link a credit card, because they are insured and protected against fraud. If you get scammed, you can call the bank to ask for a refund.

GrabPay Scam Alert : Original Post + Police Report

Here was what Muhammad Syahir posted earlier, together with his police report :

SCAM ALERT VIA GRAB PAY!
It happened to me last night and I have lost almost RM1K in a few minutes via Grab Pay.

The incident happened when one of my close friends re-created a new Instagram account and requested to follow me. He messaged me and asked for my phone number via Instagram message. Without any doubt, I gave him my phone number, knowing that he probably has lost my phone number.

He posted a few photos to his newly-created Instagram account so it does not look like a phishing account.

After that, he sent another message to me about GrabPay 8th year special campaign. He was telling me that I will send a message with a code to your phone and please let me know the code and I will see what you have won.

Grab Activation Code was sent to my phone number. It was an activation code not TAC code. I gave the activation code to him without any doubt because I know that he is my friend. Also, I was thinking of this is just an activation code, it has nothing to do with my bank accounts.

The tricks started here. I saw RM425 was debited to my GrabPay account and I did not know that it was from my bank account which was linked to the GrabPay account. After a few minutes, I received a new notification from the GrabPay that RM425 was paid to UNIPIN (M) SDN BHD.

The scammer then messaged me again on Instagram. Another activation code was sent to your phone, please let me know the code. Then, I have received another notification from GrabPay that another RM425 was paid to UNIPIN (M) SDN BHD.

When I was about to reply him a message, he blocked me up. That was the time that I know something fishy has happened. When I checked my Maybank2u, I have lost a total amount of RM896.30 from my bank account. The scammer has cleared all the money in my bank account and left RM60 balance to my GrabPay.

The scammer did a total of 5 transactions as you can see from my GrabPay activity picture below. 4 transactions were made directly via debit card which is linked to my GrabPay account and 1 transaction was made via Maybank2u. The scammer even managed to access my Maybank2u account from the GrabPay account.

It happened to me in a blink of an eye where you were blinded by this scammer who cat fished your close friend to do this scam.

On top of that, let me highlight the flaws of the GrabPay app:

1) Grab allows credit/debit card transaction without the bank’s authorization OTP and also the CVV verification.
2) Grab does not notify the user via email for any first-time login attempts of different gadgets in different location.
3) Upon registering this app for the past few years, Grab did not put a clause for the users to mandatorily set up their secured pin for any big transactions that are more than RM100.
4) Your bank account that is linked to your GrabPay will not notify you via sms for any debit transaction from the bank to the GrabPay.

*The scammer just need the Grab Activation Code and he can take all the money from your linked bank accounts on the Grab app. Such a flaw app!

Please be aware of this scam and help me to share this news. I have also tag a person who has faced the same case last week. You may also check on his Facebook profile. Patrick Saw has lost RM405 from the scammer who has approached him the same way as mine.

Now Everyone Can Setel Across Malaysia!

PETRONAS just announced that they are rolling out Setel across Malaysia! Now everyone can enjoy the convenience of using Setel to pay at the pump!

Setel What?

Setel is a free e-wallet app that was introduced in July 2018, as an e-payment solution for PETRONAS stations.

It lets you remotely pay in the car, refuel it at the pump, and go – without the need to go to the cash counter, or swiping a credit card.

Now Everyone Can Setel Across Malaysia!

Initially rolled out only in the Klang Valley, Setel recorded over 3 million transactions as of January 2020.

Thanks to that early success, they decided to roll it out to over 700 PETRONAS stations all over Malaysia. So now, everyone can Setel!

In addition, the app now allows you to redeem Mesra points for fuel directly into the app, offering even more convenience!

What To Setel Next?

Setel Ventures CEO Iskandar Ezzahuddin also revealed what features they are planning to add in the near future :

  • Setel Connect : an automated car-to-pump pairing feature that would automatically connect the driver to the pump, allowing for one-touch payments.
  • Setel for Family : family profiles that allow users to pay for fuel and earn Mesra points as a family
  • Flash Sale : you will be able to purchase food, drinks, and more while refuelling, and pick up your purchases from the Setel Pit Stop on the way out.

XOX Mobile Introduces XOX Prepaid Mastercard Card

XOX Mobile and Mastercard announced their jointly-developed XOX Prepaid Mastercard Card today. Here is everything you need to know!

XOX Prepaid Mastercard Card

Mastercard approved XOX Berhad as an issuer in May 2019, and now they are announcing the official launch of the XOX Prepaid Mastercard Card.

It is basically a prepaid card tied to their E-Money e-wallet platform, offered as a value-added service to their existing subscribers.

XOX Prepaid Mastercard Card + XOX E-Money

They are both targeted at XOX Mobile subscribers, limiting their reach in a saturated market with countless alternative e-wallets.

[adrotate group=”2″]

However, XOX says that they have a captive market in their subscribers, which they claim number some 2.5 million.

With the new XOX Prepaid Mastercard Card, XOX Mobile subscribers will be able to make secure payments at Mastercard merchants, with the option for either a virtual or a physical card.

They will also have the convenience of managing the card through a dedicated XOX Mobile app, the same app where subscribers can check on their balance, top-up, transaction history and spending habits.

XOX Prepaid Mastercard Card Availability

The XOX Prepaid Mastercard Card is not available just yet. They only plan to roll it out by the end of 2019, or early 2020.

Razer Pay Review – Definitely Not Ready For Prime Time!

Razer Pay came out in full force at MyFintech Week 2019, but we were very disappointed with what we discovered when we tried it out for ourselves.

We found some truly mind-boggling issues and bizarre design choices in Razer Pay. We reached out to the Razer Pay team for their feedback, and hope they will fix these issues ASAP!

Razer Pay

From what we understand, the current Razer Pay app is a brand new app. No longer a reskinned version of MOLPay they bought over last year.

Yet it feels half-baked, even though it is chock-full of features. You can transfer money to your friends, perform mobile top-ups, and even purchase game credits or streaming services.

Why Razer Pay Is Still Not Ready For Prime Time

Installation was a breeze, but once we started the registration process, we noticed a few troubling things…

Issue #1 : No Confirmation Of Critical Information

Razer Pay will require you to key in three pieces of critical information :

  • a password to protect your app, and ensure that only you can access it and make changes
  • a passcode to authorise payments
  • your email address for verification and password recovery

A mistake in any of the above will result in a registration failure, or worse – getting locked out of your own Razer Pay account.

This is why most app designers will insist that you key in those information TWICE, so they can verify that you entered them correctly.

Unfortunately, the Razer Pay team chose to ignore industry best practices… so GG to those who are prone to typos…

Issue #2 : SMS OTP Failure

After you key in your phone number, Razer Pay will send a 6-digit One Time Password (OTP) to your phone number.

However, the OTP SMS never arrived.

Fortunately, they did not forget to include a Resend code option, because everyone we knew who tried it over a few days received it only on the second try.

Corrected : After we pointed out to them, Razer Pay said they switched to a different OTP service provider.

These things happen, of course, but considering they were demonstrating and promoting the app and service at MyFintech Week 2019, they should have gone with a more reliable service provider.

Issue #3 : Your Registration Will Fail If You Use A Referral QR Code

Now this was really bizarre… Using a referral QR code will cause the account registration to fail.

It will just get stuck at “Creating your account…

In the end, you will have to kill the app, which means losing whatever you keyed in earlier.

But don’t waste your time trying again, because it will keep failing…

Corrected : After we pointed out to them, the Razer Pay team identified the problem and resolved it for Android users… but iOS users had to wait a few more days for the fix.

Issue #4 : They Use Your Phone Number As The Personal Invite Code!

Razer Pay offers you a pitiful RM 1 (US$0.24) for each person you refer. But to support your endeavour to earn a free cup of coffee, they offer you two options – a QR code and a manual code.

When you click to share the code manually, you will note that it lists your PHONE NUMBER as the Personal Code!

This would be a SERIOUS breach of privacy, if they are actually using your phone number as the referral code, even if it was hidden in a QR code.

After all, many people post their referral codes online, and do not expect to share their phone numbers, which are highly personal and private…

The Razer Pay team later clarified that when you click on the Share icon, the app will generate a QR code with an encrypted invitation code, like this :

https://api-my.pay.razer.com/v1/creatingInvitationLinks?inviteCode=edc34d7b95f740a7a213f04fd212eacc&country=Malaysia

Apparently, that encrypted invitation code is generated using your actual phone number… so someone on their team decided to put it there.

It’s mind-boggling why they decided to post your phone number under Share Your Invite Code, because it would only lead users to assume that their phone number is the actual referral code.

And even though it’s encrypted, anyone would be able to figure out your actual phone number if they have the encryption algorithm (through hacking or leaks). It would be better to create a separate account number, which offers an additional layer of obfuscation.

Not Corrected : Razer Pay said that they would remove the phone number as Personal Code, but as of today, it is still there.

Issue #5 : The Manual Referral Code Does Not Work

Razer Pay actually includes an option to key in a referral code manually. That implies two things :

  • the Personal Code (as shared in Issue #4) is the manual referral code
  • you can install Razer Pay and add your friend’s referral code after registration

However, neither are true… because even if you try to use the phone number, you will get the error code that “This code does not exist“.

If you extract the encrypted code (e.g. edc34d7b95f740a7a213f04fd212eacc) and key that in instead, you will get a different error code in broken English – “You register before accepting the invitation, you cannot accept the invitation

In other words, the manual referral code entry option is pointless, because there is no way to add any referral code after you register

According to Razer Pay, the problem may occur if the code is generated after the user registers his or her account.

However, we tried this with another account and it didn’t work. Oh well…

Razer Pay Still Has A LONG Way To Go

Now everyone and their grandfathers want to create their own e-wallet. It’s getting really absurd, because guess what – we all lived with a single wallet but now you want us to juggle multiple e-wallets???

Eventually, people will settle on one, maybe two e-wallets… and for those who are trying to become the e-wallet of choice, it pays to prepare well and execute flawlessly.

For now, Razer Pay still has a long way to go before we will even consider using it as a secondary e-wallet, never mind our primary e-wallet, or an actual replacement for our wallets.

If we have one piece of advice for them, it would be to actually test their app and services before deploying. Generally, users do not like to feel like beta testers, especially when it comes to finance…

Note : We have only commented so far on the registration and referral features. If we start talking about the other features… well, it’s gonna be a really long review!

Maybank MAE e-Wallet Details + Promotions Revealed!

Maybank just introduced MAE, a new e-wallet, which promises to offer a new customer experience. Let’s take a look at what Maybank MAE offers, as well as its introductory promotions!

The Maybank MAE e-Wallet

The Maybank MAE e-Wallet was launched in Kuala Lumpur today by Maybank Group President & CEO, Datuk Abdul Farid Alias, Group CEO Community Financial Services, Dato’ John Chong and Head of Virtual Banking & Payments, Kalyani Nair.

The Maybank MAE e-Wallet account is created and operated out of the Maybank app. This makes it easier for Maybank customers to quickly and easily set-up their MAE accounts. In fact, you can open a MAE account inside the Maybank app in just 5 minutes!

MAE is based on the Maybank banking payment infrastructure. This means you can top-up your MAE account through Maybank2U, Interbank Transfer, Self Service Terminals or Over The Counter (OTC). It also allows topping up from other banks via FPX and debit cards.

Easy Transfers

Maybank MAE allows you to easily transfer money into, and out of, the MAE e-wallet. Using the same Maybank app, you can also perform instant transfers, ATM services, bill payments and prepaid reloads.

Easy Purchases

MAE also allows you to directly purchase movie tickets (currently only from MBO, with TGV in the pipeline), and flight tickets. You can also pay for goods and services using QRPay.

Split Bill

MAE has a very useful Split Bill feature that lets you split up the bill (in separate or equal amounts) and request money from your friends. It will also remind and notify your friends, in case they forget, and let them pay you directly using their Maybank App.

Virtual Visa Debit Card

Your Maybank MAE account also services as a virtual Visa debit card. This allows you to shop online even if you do not have an existing credit or debit card. You can also use this virtual debit card at point-of-sale terminals using Maybank Pay or Samsung Pay.

Maybank MAE Promotions

To promote the use of MAE, Maybank created Money MAE-Hem, a game for MAE customers. Built into the app, it allows you to collect coins that will be credited into your account as cash! Just don’t click on the ballons which will end the game!

In addition, Maybank has a Scan and Win campaign, where you need to look out for, and scan, MAE QR codes. Here is a little gift from us. We are sharing with you this special QR code, which you can use without limit, to get FREE CASH!

All we ask is that you use our referral code aws0702 when you create your MAE account.

All you have to do, after creating your MAE account, is to use the QRPay scanner on the lower right corner of the MAE account, to scan the QR code above.

You will automatically receive free money on the first try. Subsequently, you can randomly win cash. There is (currently) no limit to how many times you can scan the QR code above, so keep trying!

Where To Download Maybank MAE?

Maybank MAE runs on the Maybank MY app, which is available in the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

Do use our referral code aws0702 when you create your MAE account. We won’t get any money, but we will have some fun playing Money MAE-Ham! 😀
