The Sony BRAVIA A9G Key Features

Picture Processor X1 Ultimate

Picture Processor X1 Ultimate is a new, faster processor that adds Object-based Super Resolution to the features of the previous-generation 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme. It can detect hundreds of different objects on screen and intelligently enhances brightness, detail and colour.

Acoustic Surface Audio+

The Sony BRAVIA A9G has two actuators that vibrate the panel to create the audio output. Together with its two powerful subwoofers, it can create a multi-dimensional soundscape.

TV Center Speaker Mode

If you have a multi-speaker setup, you can set the Sony BRAVIA A9G to function like a centre speaker!

Cinematic Experience

The Sony BRAVIA A9G supports Dolby Vision HDR capability, as well as Dolby Atmos for immersive surround sound. It also comes with a Netflix Calibrated Mode to ensure you will enjoy Neflix originals the way they were meant to be!

Object-based Super Resolution

Object-based Super Resolution technology detects individual objects in a picture and individually enhance their resolution to add or preserve detail.

Object-based HDR Remaster

Object-based HDR Remaster analyses the colour of individual objects and dynamically adjusts the contrast. This is superior to the usual method of adjusting along a black-to-white contrast curve.

Super Bit Mapping HDR

Super Bit Mapping HDR reveals brings out the gradations of the light in a picture, creating a smooth, natural image without the “banding” that can occur in other TVs.

Dual Database Processing

The Sony BRAVIA A9G has two image improvement databases, with thousands of references. One database is used to clean the picture and reduce on-screen noise. The other database is used to upscale the resolution to improve clarity.

Motionflow XR

The Motionflow XR technology creates and inserts extra frames between the original ones. It compares key visual factors on successive frames, then calculates the split second of missing action in the sequences.

The Sony BRAVIA A1 HDR OLED TV Revealed!

Sony Malaysia just unveiled the new Sony BRAVIA A1 HDR OLED TV at their lifestyle-themed Slice of Living roadshow in Mid Valley Megamall. Let’s check out its key features, and take a quick look at this new Sony OLED TV that features the One Slate concept!

A Slice Of Living With The Sony BRAVIA A1 HDR OLED TV

Sony introduced the Slice of Living concept to the products that are designed to harmonise with the interior of the modern home. These Slice of Living products focus on minimalist aesthetics, while maintaining the Sony emphasis on leading edge proprietary technologies. This led Sony to introduce the BRAVIA A1 OLED TV that is designed around the One Slate concept.

The Sony BRAVIA A1 HDR OLED TV arguably looks like a very large tablet with a stand. Let’s take a quick look at it…

Here is a summary of the Sony BRAVIA A1 HDR OLED TV’s key features :

4K High Dynamic Range (HDR)

The BRAVIA A1 pairs the clarity of 4K resolution with the brightness, colour and detail of High Dynamic Range (HDR). It can handle a variety of HDR formats, including HDR 10, Hybrid Log-Gamma and Dolby Vision.

[adrotate group=”2″]

4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme

The 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme processor is Sony’s most powerful processor, with 40% more performance than their earlier 4K Processor X1. This allows the BRAVIA A1 to handle not just 4K, but also HDR, images and videos in real-time.

Acoustic Surface Technology

Instead of using separate speakers, the Acoustic Surface Technology uses two actuators to turn the entire display into a massive speaker. A subwoofer integrated into the stand behind delivers powerful bass.

Sony BRAVIA A1 Price & Availability

The Sony BRAVIA A1 is available right now in 65″ and 55″ sizes at the following prices:

  • 65″ KD-65A1 : RM 29,999 / ~US$ 7,139
  • 55″ KD-55A1 : RM 16,999 / ~US$ 4,039

The Ultra-Thin LG SIGNATURE OLED W7 TV Revealed!

LG Malaysia just launched the award-winning LG SIGNATURE OLED W7 TV, and it was easy to see why – it is incredibly thin! Let’s take a look at the new LG SIGNATURE OLED W7 TV, and find out what else is great about it… and how much it costs!

The LG SIGNATURE OLED W7 TV

The LG SIGNATURE OLED W-series won more than 20 awards at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Touting a Picture-on-Wall design, the 77″ SIGNATURE OLED W7 won the CES Best of Innovation Award. Due to limited supplies and the understandably astronomical price point, LG Malaysia will only be bringing in the 65″ SIGNATURE OLED W7 TV.

Thanks to the LG OLED display technology, the 65″ SIGNATURE OLED W7 TV boasts an ultra-thin profile of just 3.8 mm. This allows it to be directly mounted onto any wall or glass panel using only four magnetic brackets. To demonstrate this, we placed a Malaysian 50 sen coin (new type) on top of the panel, so you can better see how thin it really is.

Here is a quick video tour of the 65″ LG SIGNATURE OLED W7 TV. Check out the six magnetic brackets and the ultra-thin cable at the back.

It’s not just about looks. The LG OLED display technology not only do away with backlights, it produces perfect black, thanks to its self-lighting pixels that can be turned on and off. The SIGNATURE OLED W7 TV also supports Dolby Atmos surround sound, and HDR formats like Dolby Vision, for the ultimate cinematic experience.

The LG SIGNATURE OLED W7 TV Price & Availability

LG Malaysia is only bringing in the 65″ SIGNATURE OLED W7 TV. It has an official MSRP of RM 44,999 / ~US$ 10,699.

However, you can pre-order one at a very special price of RM 39,999 / ~US$ 9,499. The offers end on 6 August 2017.

The AMD FreeSync 2 Q&A With David Glen & Syed Hussain

AMD is going to expand their royalty-free FreeSync technology this year with the introduction of Radeon FreeSync 2. If you have already read our FreeSync 2 tech briefing earlier, you know that FreeSync 2 promises to offer HDR gaming with minimal input lag.

While waiting for AMD to finalise Radeon FreeSync 2 and its certification program for their partners, let’s share with you our Q&A session with the two key AMD engineers in charge of the Radeon FreeSync 2 project – David Glen and Syed Athar Hussain.

The AMD FreeSync 2 Q&A With David Glen & Syed Hussain

AMD Senior Fellow Architect David Glen and AMD Display Domain Fellow Syed Athar Hussain are  the main guys heading the Radeon FreeSync 2 project. In this informal Q&A session held on the last day of the AMD Tech Summit in Sonoma, they give us more details on FreeSync 2.

An interesting point in this Q&A session is how the wide colour gamuts that many monitors support these days are not being utilised at all. Hope you enjoy it. Sorry about the noise though. There seemed to be some interference from nearby devices.

For those who prefer a summary of what they discussed and answered, here are the key takeaways :
  • Radeon FreeSync 2 is an AMD proprietary standard, but they will eventually push for it to be an open standard.[adrotate banner=”4″]
  • Radeon FreeSync 2 is not an AMD Vega-specific technology. It is a backward-compatible technology.
  • All GPUs that support FreeSync will support FreeSync 2, via a driver update.
  • FreeSync 2 will not be part of the Radeon Software Crimson ReLive Edition. It will only be introduced in the following Radeon Software edition.
  • FreeSync 2 will support the FP16 and 2-10-10-10 colour buffer formats, that current AMD Radeon Software drivers already support.
  • The AMD FreeSync 2 API will allow developers to quickly add FreeSync 2 capability to their games and game engines.
  • Games that do not integrate the AMD FreeSync 2 API, or use game engines that support it, will not be able to automatically switch to HDR mode, or use the FreeSync 2 transport.

  • The AMD FreeSync 2 monitor certification program will include stringent requirements for low latency (for native and scaled resolutions) and colour space, with an AMD lab to ensure that those monitors meet the minimum requirements.
  • FreeSync 2 will not deliver the colour space of HDR10 or Dolby Vision, but it’s designed to greatly expand the colour space with minimal input lag.

  • The input lag as specified in the AMD FreeSync 2 specifications is defined as the lag from the display flip to when photons are emitted.
  • There will be two-way communications between the monitor and the graphics card. The monitor’s capabilities are conveyed to the graphics subsystem, and the graphics subsystem will instruct the monitor to go into its “native operation mode” to make full use of its native colour space.
  • FreeSync 2 will support both active (two-dimensional) backlights and global illuminating backlights.

The Radeon FreeSync 2 HDR Gaming Tech Report

We were fortunate to be amongst the few invited to the AMD Tech Summit held in Sonoma, California from December 7-9, 2016. Today, we are finally allowed to reveal the third major technology update from the AMD Tech Summit – Radeon FreeSync 2. AMD also revealed a major feature upgrade to the current FreeSync technology. Get the full details below!

Fullscreen Borderless Windowed Mode Is Here!

AMD fans who have been clamouring for FreeSync to work in windowed mode will be ecstatic to learn that their request has been heard and answered. FreeSync will now work in the fullscreen borderless windowed mode!

So watch out for a driver update to start playing your games in the fullscreen borderless windowed mode very soon!

HDR Gaming

The big story though is Radeon FreeSync 2 and the next killer feature it enables – HDR gaming.

Current monitors are mostly built around the sRGB colour space, which limits the richness and vibrancy of the scene. Colours look dull and washed out, and details are lost in the shadows and highlights.

New HDR transport technologies like HDR10 and Dolby Vision aim to solve this limitation, offering 8X or better perceivable range of the sRGB colour space. They also make much better use of the display’s maximum brightness levels, which are left unused in sRGB mode.

There is a problem with both HDR10 and Dolby Vision though – they are not optimised for gaming. The tone mapping performed by these displays has a long input lag.

This input lag is not a problem for cinematic movies or video clips that render at 24 to 30 fps. However, it will be a problem for gamers who want high frame rates of 60 fps or better. AMD attempts to address both problems through Radeon FreeSync 2.

Introducing Radeon FreeSync 2

Optimised for HDR gaming, Radeon FreeSync 2 is a compromise between the wider colour gamut of HDR10 / Dolby Vision, and the low input lag of sRGB.

It offers a limited HDR colour gamut that is over 2X the perceivable brightness and colour volume of sRGB. The FreeSync 2 game can then tone-map to the display’s native colour space. This allows the monitor to skip the tone mapping step, which greatly reduces the input lag.

For this to work, both the monitor and the game must support FreeSync 2. Here are some characteristics of a FreeSync 2 monitor :

  • Low Framerate Compensation (LFC) is mandatory
  • Low Latency is mandatory
  • The monitor will provide its native characteristics to the game through the FreeSync 2 Transport

For game support, AMD will provide a FreeSync 2 API that will :

  • support the FP16, 2-10-10-10 colour buffer formats
  • automatically switch between sRGB and FreeSync 2 native modes (when a FreeSync 2 game loads)

All AMD Radeon GPUs will support FreeSync 2 via a new driver. However, it won’t be in the recently launched Radeon Software Crimson ReLive Edition.

When Will FreeSync 2 Be Available?

AMD will launch Radeon FreeSync 2 in 2017. They are aiming to get it out by the first half of 2017, but there is no firm date yet.

Will FreeSync 2 Replace FreeSync?

No, Radeon FreeSync 2 will exist in parallel with FreeSync. FreeSync 2 will merely be a higher standard that offers HDR gaming, on top of stutter- and tear-free gaming.
