Best Display Settings for Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra!

Now that you got your Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, let us show you which is the best display settings you can choose!

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra : Display Refresh Rate Options

The new Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra offers two refresh rate options (Settings > Display > Motion smoothness) :

  • Adaptive : Get smoother animation and scrolling by automatically adjusting your screen refresh rate between 1 Hz and 120 Hz
  • Standard : Get longer battery life with a 60 Hz screen refresh rate

By default, the Galaxy S23 Ultra uses the Adaptive mode for smoother graphics, but you can choose to switch to the Standard mode for longer battery life.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra : Display Resolution Options

In addition, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has three display resolution options (Settings > Display > Screen resolution) :

  • WQHD+ : 3088 x 1440 pixels
  • FHD+ : 2316 x 1080 pixels
  • HD+ : 1544 x 720 pixels

By default, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra uses the FHD+ resolution, but you can switch to the full WQHD+ resolution for sharper graphics, or drop down to HD+ for a longer battery life.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra : Best Display Settings!

Those five display settings affect battery life. Even though the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra comes with a large 5,000 mAh battery, it won’t last forever. So which display resolution and refresh rate should you choose?

Many people and even some experts will recommend that you switch to the best possible settings – you paid for those features after all! But how much will they suck your new smartphone’s battery life?

To find out, I ran the PCMark Work 3.0 battery life test until its battery capacity dropped to 20% several times, and these were the best results I obtained:

Display
Resolution
Standard
Refresh
Dynamic
Refresh
WQHD+ 15 hours 9 minutes 12 hours 7 minutes
FHD+ 15 hours 18 minutes 13 hours
HD+ 16 hours 46 minutes 14 hours 34 minutes

Best Display Resolution : WQHD+

Switching to the WQHD+ resolution will definitely give you the sharpest and best possible display on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Normally, this would suck up a significant amount of power, which is why Samsung set the Galaxy S23 Ultra to use the FHD+ option by default.

But as my tests show, using the maximum display resolution of WQHD+ barely dents its battery life!

At the Standard 60 Hz refresh rate, you lose just 9 minutes – which is a drop of just under 0.11% – practically imperceptible.

If you switch to the Dynamic Refresh Rate mode, you lose 53 minutes or 6.8% of battery life. That sounds like a lot, but you still have just over 12 hours of battery life.

So unless you must have the longest-possible battery life, I recommend you switch to the WQHD+ resolution.

The low resolution of HD+ definitely increases your battery life, but not as much as you might think. You gain about 1.5 hours longer battery life. Not worth putting up with soft-looking images and text IMHO.

Best Display Refresh Rate : Up To Your Preference

The change in refresh rate affects the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s battery life far more than changing its display resolution.

At the WQHD+ resolution, switching to Dynamic Refresh cuts your battery life by 3 hours, or about 20%.

At the FHD+ resolution, switching to Dynamic Refresh cuts your battery life by 2 hours 18 minutes, or about 15%.

At the HD+ resolution, switching to Dynamic Refresh cuts your battery life by 2 hours 12 minutes, or about 13%.

If you are fine with a 12 hour battery life, and most would be, you should definitely turn on Dynamic Refresh Rate.

But if you want a longer battery life (like if you’re on a trip), you can always turn on the Standard refresh rate for a 15%-20% boost in battery life to about 15 hours.

I highly recommend that you try both refresh rate options, and see if you can feel a noticeable difference. People who play mobile games will probably find it noticeable, while non-gamers might not appreciate the difference in refresh rate.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra : Prices + Pre-Order Offer!

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra comes in four main colours – Phantom Black, Green, Lavender, and Cream.

Sadly, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra will be significantly more expensive than last year’s Galaxy S22 Ultra!

Here are the official launch prices for the three available storage capacities:

  • 256 GB : RM5,699 (about US$1,336 / £1,083 / A$1,888 / S$1,755)
  • 512 GB : RM6,199 (about US$1,453 / £1,179 / A$2,052 / S$1,910)
  • 1 TB : RM7,199 (about US$1,688 / £1,369 / A$2,388 / S$2,218)

While the increased price may be disappointing, Samsung is offering some great pre-order offers:

  • you get a free upgrade to the next storage option!
  • if you buy from the Samsung Online Store, you get an RM400 e-Voucher
  • you get 30% off Samsung accessories, Samsung Care+, Galaxy tablets, Watch, and Buds earphones!
  • you get to save up to RM600 more when you trade in!

Here are online purchase options for your convenience:

Samsung Display To Finally Shut Down LCD Business!

Samsung Display will finally shut down its LCD business in June, closing a chapter in its history!

Here is what we know so far…

Samsung Display To Finally Shut Down LCD Business!

Samsung Display originally sought to close its LCD business in 2020, even selling its LCD plant in Suzhou to CSOT, a Chinese company owned by the TCL conglomerate.

Their original 2020 plan to shut down their LCD business was derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused a surge in LCD prices. Samsung decided to continue their business, until end of 2022. However, LCD prices have fallen rapidly recently, with price pressure from Chinese and Taiwanese rivals.

Its parent company, Samsung Electronics, was their largest buyer; but even it has agreed to purchase displays from Chinese and Taiwanese companies like BOE Technology Group and AU Optronics Corps.

Samsung Display To Finally Shut Down LCD Business!

In light of such challenging market conditions, Samsung Display decided to close its LCD business six months earlier.

From June 2022 onwards, Samsung Display will stop producing LCD panels used for large TV screens, and focus instead on manufacturing OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) and Quantum Dot displays.

Employees from its LCD display business are expected to be transferred to its Quantum Dot display business.

2021 Samsung TV First Look : What Could They Reveal?

Samsung is slated to reveal their 2021 range of TV models at CES, but ahead of that, they are going to give everyone a sneak peek of sorts!

Could it be MicroLED (again)? Or Quantum Dot OLED (QD-OLED)? Tell us what YOU think!

2021 Samsung TV First Look : What Could They Reveal?

Samsung is slated to launch their 2021 range of TV models at CES 2021, with a press conference at 9 AM on 11 January 2021.

However, it looks like they will give us all a sneak peek of their new VD (Visual Display) technology on 7 January 2021 at 12 AM (GMT+8) here in Malaysia.

The global unveiling will be streamed online at the official Samsung website.

2021 Samsung TV First Look : MicroLED or QD Display?

Although Samsung isn’t telling us what they will showcase in the 7 January 2021 First Look, we believe it will be their MicroLED TV technology.

It first debuted in the 2019 The Wall – which won the 2019 Display of the Year Award. But this is a freaking expensive TV that is virtually a technology demo with a very niche market.

We believe that Samsung will “unveil” MicroLED as the new mainstream display technology for home entertainment enthusiasts to aspire to.

Unlike current LED TVs, a MicroLED TV will have a panel that uses microscopic LEDs as display pixels. This would allow for phenomenally high brightness and infinite contrast, with very wide colour gamut.

Samsung also claims that their new MicroLED technology can last for up to 100,000 hours.

They actually launched a new 110-inch MicroLED TV in South Korean on 10 December 2020, which they plan to launch globally in Q1 2021.

Priced at KRW 170 million (about US$157,000 / £115,000 / RM629,000), it has a 4K resolution with a built-in Majestic Sound System and a 5.1-channel speaker system.

On the other hand, Samsung may be unveiling their QD-OLED display – a hybrid of OLED and Quantum Dots, which they plan to start producing this year.

Samsung Display will invest 13.1 trillion won by 2025 to build “Q1 Line,” the world’s first QD display mass production line at Asan Campus. The new line is scheduled to start production in 2021 with an initial 30,000 sheets (8.5 generations) and will produce a huge QD display of 65 inches or larger.

This QD-OLED hybrid display would deliver higher brightness and wider colour gamuts, with incredible contrast ratios.

Best of all – it will be easier to manufacture, which means lower production costs, and lower prices for consumers.

On the other hand, Samsung is only kicking off QD-OLED manufacturing this year… which means this may not be ready for primetime yet.

So what do YOU think? Will Samsung be unveiling MicroLED or QD-OLED on 7 January 2021?

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 120Hz Refresh Rate Explained!

One of the new features introduced in the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE is a 120 Hz refresh rate for its Super AMOLED display!

Find out what this 120 Hz refresh rate means, and how it allows for smoother scrolling and a more realistic gaming experience!

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G : A Quick Primer!

The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G comes with the best features from the Galaxy S20 smartphone, in a streamlined premium design.

The Galaxy S20 FE 5G comes with a slightly larger 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display, and a much faster 120 Hz refresh rate.

It is now powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 mobile platform with 8 GB of LPDDR5 memory, and up to 256 GB of storage capacity.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G : 120 Hz Refresh Rate Explained

The display refresh rate is the frequency at which the display refreshes the image on screen every second. Hence, it is measured and described in Hz.

The usual refresh rate of 60 Hz means the image on the display gets refreshed 60 times a second.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G comes with a Super AMOLED display that can refresh at up to 120 Hz – 120 times per second.

The higher refresh rate offers smoother visuals, and less motion blur. This gives you a better visual experience, whether you are gaming or browsing the web.

Xiaomi 3rd Generation Under-Display Camera Technology!

Xiaomi just unveiled their 3rd Generation Under-Display Camera Technology, which is being put into mass production!

Here’s a quick primer on what will soon be coming to a Xiaomi smartphone near you!

Xiaomi Under-Display Camera Technology!

Xiaomi has been working on their Under-Display Camera technology for quite some time. Their first generation effort did not go far – it didn’t even leave their lab.

Their second generation Under-Display Camera technology was good enough to showcase to the public, but never made it to production.

That changes with their new 3rd Generation Under-Display Camera technology!

Xiaomi 3rd Generation Under-Display Camera Technology!

In the 3rd Generation Under-Display Camera Technology, Xiaomi has greatly improved the “full-screen effect” through better pixel arrangement, and optimisation of their camera algorithm.

The new pixel arrangement of the display allows light to pass through the gaps between the sub-pixels. This allows each pixel to retain a complete RGB sub-pixel layout without sacrificing pixel density.

Xiaomi claims that their unique pixel arrangement doubles the number of horizontal and vertical pixels, compared to competing solutions – delivering the same pixel density over the camera, as the rest of the display.

According to Xiaomi, the display area over the camera will have the same brightness, colour gamut and colour accuracy as the rest of the display.

The Xiaomi 3rd Generation Under-Display Camera technology also adopts a special circuit design to hide more components under the RGB sub-pixels to further increase light transmittance to the camera below.

Xiaomi claims that these improvements allow the new under-display camera to deliver the same performance as conventional front cameras.

That’s why they are confident enough to put it into mass production, with plans to introduce these under-display cameras in their smartphones next year.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra : 60Hz vs 120Hz Battery Life!

One of the new features introduced in the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is its 120Hz display, which allows for smoother scrolling and a more realistic gaming experience.

However, running the display at 120Hz will reduce the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s battery life. Let’s find out exactly how much!

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra : A Quick Primer!

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 in the United States, and Samsung Exynos 990 in the rest of the world.

To ensure it will last a long time, Samsung gave it a very large 5,000 mAh battery. The corresponding Galaxy S10 Plus from last year only has a 4,100 mAh battery in comparison.

It comes with a 40 MP front camera, and a quad-camera system at the back, with :

  • a 108 MP main camera,
  • a 48 MP telephoto camera with 10X hybrid optical zoom,
  • a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, and
  • a DepthVision camera (for depth sensing)

The top-of-the-line model pairs 16 GB LPDDR5 memory with 512 GB fast UFS 3.0 storage. The other two models come with 12 GB LPDDR5 memory, and either 128 GB or 256 GB storage.

Recommended : Samsung Exynos 990 Performance : How Fast Is It?

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra : 60Hz vs 120Hz

Running the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra‘s display at 120Hz allows for smoother scrolling and a more realistic gaming experience. However, running the display at 120 Hz saps battery life.

The display not only refreshes twice as often, the GPU has to work twice as hard. This is why Samsung sets the display to 60Hz by default.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra : 60Hz vs 120Hz Battery Life!

We ran the PCMark Work 2.0 battery life test until its battery capacity dropped to 20% several times, with the display set to 60Hz and 120Hz. Here were the best results we obtained :

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra @ 60Hz : 11 hours 32 minutes

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra @ 120Hz : 9 hours 4 minutes

So there you have it – increasing the display refresh rate on the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra from 60Hz to 120Hz will reduce its battery life by about 21% or roughly 2.5 hours.

Work 2.0 60Hz Display 120Hz Display Difference
Battery Life 11 hours 32 mins 9 hours 4 mins – 148 mins (21.4%)
Battery Utilisation 5.78 mAh / min. 7.35 mAh / min. + 1.27 mAh / min.

Now we can see why Samsung set the display to 60Hz by default. If battery life is important, keep it at the default refresh rate of 60Hz.

But if you prefer to enjoy the 120Hz display, go on right ahead. Thanks to its large 5,000 mAh battery, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra will last you quite a few hours!

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra : Price + Availability

Samsung is only offering two colour options – Cosmic Black, and Cosmic Gray – as shown in our video above.

Here are its recommended retail prices :

  • Malaysia : RM 4,999 (128 GB)
  • United States : $1,399.99 (128 GB) | $1,599.99 (512 GB)
  • United Kingdom : £1,199 (128 GB) | £1,399 (512 GB)

ASUS ROG Swift 360 : World’s First 360Hz G-SYNC Display!

At CES 2020, NVIDIA and ASUS just announced the world’s first 360Hz G-SYNC display – the ASUS ROG Swift 360! Here are the details!

360Hz G-SYNC Displays

NVIDIA first introduced G-SYNC in 2013. It is a variable refresh rate technology that eliminates tearing by synchronising the display’s refresh rate with the GPU’s actual frame rate.

Since then, they have improved it with new technologies like dynamic overdrive to improve player perception, and custom-tuned firmware for better image quality.

NVIDIA is now introducing 360Hz refresh rates for even faster reaction times – reducing it to less than 3 ms, so esports professionals can enjoy tear-free frames at incredibly low latencies.

ASUS ROG Swift 360 : World’s First 360Hz G-SYNC Display!

ASUS developed the ROG Swift 360 with NVIDIA, targeting it at esports professionals. It features a 24.5-inch panel, with these official features :

  • Blistering Fast Refresh Rate: 360Hz delivers crystal clear visuals, extremely low system latency for faster reaction times, and the smoothest motion to keep pros on target.
  • Designed for Esports: Play how the pros do and never miss a critical moment with the highest performance 24.5 inch Full HD display.
  • Superior Clarity: No distracting tearing, stuttering, flicker, or artifacts with NVIDIA G-SYNC VRR technology.
  • Quality Certified by NVIDIA: All G-SYNC certified displays undergo a rigorous validation process and are subjected to 300 image quality tests to ensure they deliver consistent quality and maximum performance.

NVIDIA will be using the ASUS ROG Swift 360 running a set of esports demos to demonstrate its improved performance in target acquisition, aiming and perception.

ASUS ROG Swift 360 : Price + Availability

For now, the ASUS ROG Swift 360 is only available for demonstration at the NVIDIA CES 2020 showcase. Price and availability will be revealed later.

The ASUS ROG Phone 2 (MY | SG | US | UK | AU) comes with a really nice and large 6.59-inch AMOLED display.

Its 1080 x 2340 resolution is much lower than the likes of Samsung Galaxy Note10+ or Galaxy S10+, but it boasts a 108% DCI-P3 colour gamut and a 120Hz refresh rate.

Now, that 120Hz refresh rate is the ROG Phone 2’s key selling point. ASUS claims it gives gamers a real advantage against their opponents, as well as a nicer, silkier gaming experience.

However, unbeknownst to many – ASUS actually sets the ROG Phone 2 (MY | SG | US | UK | AU) to use a 60 Hz refresh rate, making it no different from its chief rival – the Black Shark 2 PRO (MY | SG | AU | UK).

Amazingly, many gamers and some reviewers were not aware of this. If you see people commenting on how smooth the ROG Phone 2 display looks, without mentioning they manually turned on the 120Hz refresh rate – that’s just the placebo effect! 😀

Recommended : ASUS ROG Phone 2 vs Black Shark 2 PRO : Who Wins?

Why Does The ROG Phone 2 Use 60Hz And Not 120Hz?

Simple – as we pointed out from the very beginning – the 120Hz refresh rate will use up a lot more power than 60Hz.

Both the Qualcomm Adreno 640 GPU and the ROG Phone 2’s AMOLED display, has to work twice as hard with a 120Hz refresh rate, compared to 60Hz.

That’s why ASUS gave the ROG Phone 2 (MY | SG | US | UK | AU) a large and heavy 6,000 mAh battery. The 120Hz refresh rate would have been murder on battery life.

But ASUS also knew that reviewers and early users would comment about the poorer battery life, even with such a large battery. So the solution was apparently to quietly set the AMOLED display to use a 60Hz refresh rate.

ROG Phone 2 : How To Turn On 90Hz / 120Hz Refresh Rate!

Now, poorer ROG Phone 2 battery life aside, it would be really foolish to pay so much more for a 120Hz display only to have it run at 60Hz. That would be like buying a Porsche with a 80 km/h speed limiter installed.

So we created this video guide to help you switch your ROG Phone 2 (MY | SG | US | UK | AU) from its default 60Hz refresh rate to 90Hz or 120Hz.

ASUS offers a total of three ROG Phone 2 refresh rate options – 60Hz (default), 90Hz and 120Hz.

You can switch the refresh rate on-the-fly, but unfortunately, it’s not part of Quick Settings. ASUS buried it in the Display settings.

Here is the quickest way to switch the ROG Phone 2’s refresh rate :

  1. Swipe down from the top of the ROG Phone 2 display to access Quick Settings.
  2. Tap on the Settings icon at the lower right corner, to bring up the Settings screen.
  3. Tap on the Display option.

  1. Under Display settings, tap on the Refresh rate option.
  2. You will see that your ROG Phone 2 is set to use 60 Hz by default.
  3. You can now select either 90 Hz or 120 Hz.

Just select the refresh rate you prefer, and the display will flicker a little as it changes the refresh rate.

That’s it – you are ready to go! Enjoy the higher refresh rate!

LG Dual Screen Smartphone Technology Explained!

LG has now introduced two Dual Screen smartphones – the LG V50 ThinQ and the LG G8X ThinQ.

In this article, we will dive into their Dual Screen technology, and look at the good, the bad and the ugly side of it!

LG Dual Screen Technology

Foldable displays are a great way to differentiate smartphones from their rivals. But the HUAWEI Mate X and Samsung Galaxy Fold have shown, they are difficult to develop and manufacture.

Unwilling to spend money to develop their own foldable display, LG chose to develop Dual Screen devices instead.

While not as sexy as foldable displays, they are inherently much cheaper and easier to develop and manufacture.

That’s why the first model is out now, with a second model on the way, even while the HUAWEI Mate X and Samsung Galaxy Fold have been delayed for months now.

LG V50 Dual Screen

First introduced in the LG V50 ThinQ 5G, it basically involves attaching a Dual Screen case (which has a second display) to an ordinary LG V50 smartphone.

The Dual Screen case has a second display on the inner side of its front cover. It uses a three-pin POGO connector to deliver power and data to this display.

The two displays have different characteristics which we have summarised in this table :

Specifications LG V50 ThinQ Display LG Dual Screen Display
Size 6.4-inch 6.2-inch
Panel Type OLED OLED
Resolution Quad HD+
1440 x 3120 pixels
Full HD+
1080 x 2160 pixels
Pixel Density 538 pixels per inch 390 pixels per inch

The hinge design not only separates the two display by about ¼ inch, it cannot fully open so the two displays cannot lay flat.

LG G8X Dual Screen

At IFA 2019, LG unveiled their second Dual Screen device – the LG G8X ThinQ.

It incorporates a number of improvements over the LG V50, including using the same display… right down to the notch!

Specifications LG G8X ThinQ Display LG Dual Screen Display
Size 6.4-inch 6.4-inch
Panel Type OLED OLED
Resolution Full HD+
1080 x 2340 pixels
Full HD+
1080 x 2340 pixels
Pixel Density 403 pixels per inch 403 pixels per inch

Instead of a 3-pin POGO connector, the G8X uses the USB-C port to communicate with its Dual Screen case.

[adrotate group=”1″]

Dual Screen = Separate Displays

The way LG designed it, the two displays are functionally and logically separate displays.

This means it is not possible to stretch an app across both displays… except for a singular exception – the NAVER Whale browser.

It does not help that the two displays are separated by a hinge that is about ¼ inch wide, and hinge design itself prevents the two displays from laying flat.

HONOR Honghu 818 Display SoC Details Revealed!

At the Global Mobile Internet Conference (GMIC) in Guangzhou, HONOR President George Zhao unveiled the Honghu 818 display SoC.

Here is everything you need to know about the HONOR Honghu 818 display SoC, which promises to deliver superior images and sound quality for smart displays!

The HONOR Honghu 818 Display SoC

The HONOR Honghu 818 was developed by the Hisilicon research and development team over a period of 5-years. It is their first intelligent display SoC to be made available globally.

Quad-Core CPU + Quad-Core GPU

While many media reported that the Honghu 818 has an octa-core processor, they would be wrong.

The Honghu 818 has a quad-core processor, and a quad-core GPU; but in this case 4+4 really does not equal 8…

To be specific, its CPU has two ARM Cortex-A73 high-performance cores, and two ARM Cortex-A53 low-power cores. Its ARM Mali-G51 GPU, on the other hand, has four cores.

This means it is far less powerful than Hisilicon’s flagship Kirin 980 or Kirin 970 mobile SoCs or even mid-range mobile SoCs like the Kirin 650.

However, HONOR says that it is more than capable of handling heavy image processing on large displays, as well as other tasks, at the same time.

In fact, they claim that this octa-core processor’s “bandwidth utilisation rate” leads the industry by “over 50% on average”.

Recommended : The Official HUAWEI Kirin 980 Tech Briefing + Demos!

Honghu 818 Image Processing Technologies

[adrotate group=”2″]

Its image processing engine boasts these seven image processing technologies :

  • Motion Estimate and Motion Compensation (MEMC)
  • High Dynamic Range (HDR) Imaging
  • Super Resolution (SR)
  • Noise Reduction (NR)
  • Dynamic Contrast Improvement (DCI)
  • Auto Colour Management (ACM)
  • Local Dimming (LD)

Those algorithms lets the Honghu 818 enhance and optimise image resolution, contrast and colour performance of the display.

Histen Audio Technology

The HUAWEI Histen audio technology optimises sound quality in four aspects :

  • ultra-wide sound field
  • transient intermodulation distortion
  • sound equalization, and
  • intelligent bass.

This allows the smart display to deliver a great audio experience without using a separate audio chip.

Honghu 818 Multimedia Decoding Capabilities

The Honghu 818 has a built-in multimedia decoder that supports hardware decoding of up to 8K video at 30 fps, or 4K video at 120 fps.

According to HONOR, the Honghu 818 can open a H.265-encoded 4K video in just 1.3 seconds, while its rivals take almost twice as long.

It can also decode images of up to 64 megapixels in resolution, which is greater than the highest-resolution DSLR cameras (Canon 5DS and Canon 5DS R), and certainly much greater than any smartphone camera.

The First Honghu 818 Powered Display

HONOR said that they will be launching the HONOR Vision TV, which will be the first display powered by the Honghu 818. This 55-inch smart TV will also come with a smart pop-up camera.

The Ultimate Apple Pro Display XDR Configuration Guide!

The new Apple Pro Display XDR is the pinnacle of Apple display engineering. But before you splash out thousands of dollars for it, do you know which configuration you really need?

In this configuration guide, find out options you have and what you should choose for the ultimate Pro Display XDR monitor! We even created a special infographic to help you make that choice!

The Apple Pro Display XDR Monitor

The Apple Pro Display XDR is a new 6K IPS display that is designed to complement the new 2019 Mac Pro workstation.

It boasts a 32-inch panel with a 6K resolution of 6016 x 3384 pixels, and Extreme Dynamic Range (XDR) capability with 576 local dimming zones!

Of course, HDR monitors have been around for some time now, with 384-zone models being introduced last year.

On top of that, it delivers 1000 nits of sustained brightness, with a peak brightness of 1600 nits! It also boasts dual ambient light sensors, to ensure an accurate viewing experience in any ambient lighting condition. Kind of like BenQ’s Brightness Intelligence Plus technology

Why You NEED The Apple Pro Display XDR Monitor!

The Apple Pro Display XDR is the ultimate display for hardcore Apple fans, and graphics professionals who believe it’s the Viagra they need to perform at their very best.

It is designed to do two things – give you an ultra-premium 6K display experience, and the Tim Cook-anointed right to thumb your nose at the 99.9% hoi polloi.

Because when you have the Apple Pro Display XDR, you know you have proven your worth.

You are the TOP 0.1%. You are the BEST graphics designer in the world. The ULTIMATE Apple fan.

Apple Pro Display XDR Configuration Options

Don’t bother explaining to the ignorant rabble (or your boss) why you NEED the Pro Display XDR. Focus on what options you should select.

Standard vs Nano-Texture Finish

Everyone knows that graphics designers lose their eyesight after years of peeking at pixels. Remember how many times you mistook the glare off your display as an actual light flare?

To avoid that kind of problem, you can now pay Apple $1000 to etch a nano-texture pattern on your Pro Display XDR!

Our Verdict : The standard finish is for cheap schlubs. Go Nano-Texture, or go home!

Pro Stand / VESA Mount / Handheld?

The Pro Stand ($999), of course! It does everything a good monitor stand has been capable of doing for the past several decades, but with the flair and price tag that only awesome graphics designers like you understand.

The VESA Mount Adapter ($199) lets you hook up the Pro Display XDR onto walls, multi-monitor stands, or if you are really cheap – onto a non-Apple monitor stand.

But if you employ slave labour, you can always go old-school and have your slave hold it (FREE!). Remember – the Pro Stand does not support Siri… YET, so the slave route is the only way to control your Pro Display XDR by voice commands.

The Apple Pro Mug XDR Infographic

To make the choices simpler to understand, we created this special infographic, which uses an Apple Pro Mug XDR analogy to translate all those technical gobbledygook into something professional graphics designers can understand at a glance.

If you walk around with a standard finish, everyone’s going to know you are just another 0.1% wannabe. SHOW the world you are part of the REAL 0.1% with that matte nano-texture finish!

The Pro Handle will let you take the Apple Pro Mug XDR to the limits. Fill it with super-hot coffee or liquid nitrogen – all without fear of injuring your hand!

And the Pro Handle has special magnetic connectors, so you can easily detach the Pro Mug XDR, to attach it to a separate Pro Handle! Now you can share your drink without sharing the same handle! How hygienic!

If you must opt for the Universal Sleeve, tell people you are not being cheap – you are just being environmentally-friendly. Cardboard is recyclable and the Universal Sleeve does not use rare earth magnets!

Init Display First – The BIOS Optimization Guide

Init Display First

Common Options : AGP or PCIe, PCI

Quick Review

The Init Display First BIOS feature allows you to select whether to boot the system using the PCIe / AGP graphics card or the PCI graphics card. This is important if you have both PCIe / AGP and PCI graphics cards.

If you are only using a single graphics card, the BIOS will ignore this BIOS setting and boot the computer using that graphics card. However, there may be a slight reduction in the time taken to detect and initialize the card if you select the proper setting. For example, if you only use a PCIe / AGP graphics card, then setting Init Display First to PCIe or AGP may speed up your system’s booting-up process.

If you are only using a single graphics card, it is recommended that you set the Init Display First feature to the proper setting for your system :

  • PCIe for a single PCIe card,
  • AGP for a single AGP card, and
  • PCI for a single PCI card.

But if you are using multiple graphics cards, it is up to you which card you want to use as your primary display card. It is recommended that you select the fastest graphics card as the primary display card.

Details

Although the PCI Express and AGP buses were designed exclusively for the graphics subsystem, some users still have to use PCI graphics cards for multi-monitor support. This was more common with AGP motherboards because there can be only one AGP port, while PCI Express motherboards can have multiple PCIe slots.

If you want to use multiple monitors on AGP motherboards, you must either get an AGP graphics card with multi-monitor support, or use PCI graphics cards. PCI Express motherboards usually have multiple PCIe slots, but there may still not be enough PCIe slots, and you may need to install PCI graphics cards.

For those who upgraded from a PCI graphics card to an AGP graphics card, it is certainly enticing to use the old PCI graphics card to support a second monitor. The PCI card would do the job just fine as it merely sends display data to the second monitor. You don’t need a powerful graphics card to run the second monitor, if it’s merely for display purposes.

When it comes to a case of a PCI Express or an AGP graphics card working in tandem with a PCI graphics card, the BIOS has to determine which graphics card is the primary graphics card. Naturally, the default would be the PCIe or AGP graphics card since it would naturally be the faster graphics card.

However, there are situations in which you may want to manually select the PCI graphics card instead. For example – you have a PCIe / AGP graphics card as well as a PCI graphics card, but only one monitor. This is where the Init Display First BIOS feature comes in. It allows you to select whether to boot the system using the PCIe / AGP graphics card or the PCI graphics card.
