FREE 1GB Internet Now Extended To Full 24 Hours!

All five Malaysian telcos finally agreed to extend the daily free 1GB Internet to the full 24 hours! Here are the details!

FREE 1GB Internet For COVID-19 Lockdown!

As part of the Short-Term Economic Recovery Plan (ERP) announced by the Malaysian government, every Malaysian resident were given 1GB of free Internet every day during the COVID-19 lockdown.

However, they only provided the 1GB of free Internet from 8 AM until 6 PM daily. Presumably because it’s meant for working and learning at home.

FREE 1GB Internet Now Extended To Full 24 Hours!

Some three weeks after Malaysia started its economic recovery, all five Malaysian telcos finally agreed to let people use the daily Internet quota after 6 PM.

Maybe they finally realised that working and learning at home doesn’t actually stop at 6 PM…

Free 1GB Internet Now Usable For Full 24 Hours

Celcom, Digi, Maxis, U Mobile and Telekom Malaysia announced that, effective immediately, the free daily 1GB Internet would be usable for the full 24 hours.

Free 1GB Internet Daily, Until 31 December

They also confirmed that the daily free 1GB Internet will be provided until 31 December 2020.

This daily complimentary 1GB Internet quota is on top of your existing plan’s Internet quota.

If you normally receive 1GB of Internet for a month, this will give you 31GB of Internet for the whole month – 1GB + 30GB (in a month with 30 days).

For Work + Learning, Not For Play

The daily 1GB Internet quota can be used for everything, except social media, video streaming, gaming and music streaming.

Free Access To Essential Services

On top of the daily 1GB Internet quota, all five telcos will provide free and unlimited access to essential COVID-19 related apps and services, like :

  • MySejahtera and MyTrace apps
  • CPRC Hotline
  • Malaysia Ministry of Health and World Health Organization websites

The New Digi 900 MHz Network Spectrum Explained

Digi Telecommunications activated their new 900 MHz network on 1 July 2017, promising wider coverage and better signal penetration in buildings. In this article, we will share with you why this matters to you as a consumer.

The New Digi 900 MHz Network Spectrum Explained

The 900 MHz and 1800 MHz spectrum were originally reserved for use by 2G networks, but in February 2016, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) reallocated certain bands for use by 3G and 4G LTE networks. Digi was allocated 2 x 5 MHz of 900 MHz and 2 x 20 MHz of 1800 MHz for 15 years.

According to Digi Chief Technology Officer, Kesavan Sivabalan, the Digi 4G LTE network reaches 86% of Malaysians in 295 cities and major towns today, while the faster LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network covers 45% of populated areas in Malaysia, covering 80 cities and towns.

The new 900 MHz spectrum not only extends the reach from the base stations, but also penetrates walls better to offer stronger indoor coverage.

To educate consumers on the advantages of the new 900 MHz network, Digi created this advertorial :

Currently, the Digi 4G LTE 900 MHz spectrum covers only 15% of the population in 51 cities and towns. There is an emphasis on rural areas, due to the greater reach of the 900 MHz spectrum, and the lower likelihood of network congestion.

Digi on the MRT

Digi also took the opportunity to announce that their network is also available throughout the underground sections of the newly-launched MRT line. This means Digi customers will enjoy seamless connectivity at all times, while riding on the MRT.

“Customers can stay connected and reachable at all times while they travel on the MRT. They can continue to stream content like music and videos, play online games or even catch up on the reading their favourite websites. This is just another example of what we mean when we say we have the infrastructure in place to cater to our customers’ ever-changing and evolving digital lifestyles,” Kesavan added.

The Digi Freedom to Internet Offers

First, let us remind you that freedom is NOT free – Digi is not giving away anything free. What they’re offering is a clearer, easier way to manage your costs while getting the services you want at a lower cost.

Digi Freedom to Internet consists of four “Freedom propositions” – Music Freedom, Video Freedom, Gaming Freedom and Roaming Freedom.

Music Freedom

All Digi Postpaid and Prepaid customers, who have been with the company for at least six months, will receive an upgrade of their Music Freedom quota – from 1 GB to 5 GB. This is the music streaming quota monthly for music streaming services such as Spotify, Joox and Smule.

Video Freedom

The Digi iFleet Fleet Management System Revealed!

On 8 June 2017, Digi Telecommunications revealed to us the first IoT solution to debut from their Connected Vehicle project – the Digi iFleet fleet management system. This is a B2B solution targeted at commercial vehicles, offering an all-in-one solution for businesses to track their vehicle fleet in real-time.

Digi Connected Vehicles

Digi is transforming from its beginnings as a telecommunications provider into a digital company. To diversify their revenue streams, they are leveraging their 4G+ network to offer IoT solutions. Their Connected Vehicles project is the first of many IoT verticals that Digi is venturing into.

Digi is particularly interested in the commercial vehicle market, which boasts more than 27.6 million registered vehicles. The market is also projected to grow at 60,000 additional vehicles per year. With SPAD ICOP safety guidelines requiring these vehicles to have real-time tracking systems, this is a huge market for a fleet management system. This is where the new Digi iFleet service comes in.

Digi iFleet Fleet Management System

Digi iFleet is a B2B solution targeted at commercial vehicles. This is the first IoT solution Digi is introducing from its range of Connected Vehicle offerings. This fleet management service enables businesses to track their fleet in real-time. Digi believes it’s the most robust all-in-one solution in the market, with the following advantages over its competitor :

  • All inclusive solution that takes care of hardware, software and connectivity at one go
  • Advanced tracking technology providing greater fleet insights to improve business productivity
  • Driver behaviour insights and scoring to instil safe driving culture
  • A continuously evolving value-added solution introducing features beyond tracking, such as smart fuel management and usage-based insurance (UBI) ready to name a few

While Digi is rather late to the fleet management market, they believe that Digi iFleet will disrupt the market with its end-to-end system, and affordable fee with no major cost outlay. How does Digi iFleet do that? For that, we have Selina Wong, the Digi iFleet Product Manager, who explains it all in this video.

The Digi iFleet solution consists of both hardware and a cloud-based service. When a business signs up for iFleet, a tracking module will be attached to the battery of their vehicles. The tracking module has independent sensors and a built-in modem that transmits data to the Digi iFleet system every 10 seconds. It also has an internal battery that last 4 hours, and 8 MB of flash storage.

If necessary, Digi can enable roaming for vehicles that need to cross national borders during their deliveries. Otherwise, the internal flash storage is sufficient to store about a month’s worth of data. The module is designed to transmit the data whenever it is within range of the Digi network.

According to Digi, iFleet is already being used by logistic providers like SnT Global, and piloted across diverse industries like FMCG, automobile and infrastructure with brands such as Peugeot, Kia, Gamuda and Citylink.

Digi iFleet Price & Availability

[adrotate group=”2″]

Digi iFleet is available to all Malaysian enterprises at just RM 90 per vehicle per month.

Companies that are Digi Enterprise Business customers will be entitled to a special offer. If they sign up by 30 June 2017, they only need to pay RM 75 per vehicle per month – a 16.67% discount.

Coming Soon In 2H 2017 : B2C & UBI Solutions For Private Vehicles

Digi will introduce a B2C connected vehicle solution in 2H 2017 that will offer private vehicle owners a solution that encompasses tracking, driver safety, vehicle security and smart in-vehicle services for an affordable price.

In addition, Digi is also preparing to introduce usage-based insurance solutions when the insurance tariff is liberalised in July 2017. They will allow private vehicle insurers the capability to price motor insurance premiums according to actual individual vehicle or fleet performance. This will reward good drivers with lower premium payments.

Digi VoLTE (Voice-over-LTE) Is Now Available!

Shah Alam, 26 October 2016Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (Digi) today announced that the Digi VoLTE (Voice-over-LTE) feature is now available on its 4G LTE network nationwide. VoLTE is a next-generation voice call technology that allows customers to enjoy better voice call quality for those with VoLTE-capable devices such as the newly launched Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

Digi VoLTE

With Digi VoLTE, voice calls are connected over a 4G LTE network. Up to now, cellular voice calls in Malaysia for all telcos are generally made over 2G and 3G networks. The higher bandwidth of the 4G LTE network makes it ideal to transmit higher fidelity voice calls that Digi customers can now enjoy. Along with that, Digi VoLTE also comes with a noise cancellation capability that eliminates most background noise for a clearer call experience.

Another advantage of VoLTE is that it allows customers to simultaneously surf the web, download or stream content from the internet at 4G LTE speeds while engaged on a voice call. Up to now, the need to use 3G or 2G infrastructure to connect voice calls means internet activity while on calls will not be as fast as experienced on Digi’s 4G LTE network.

“We are excited to bring this next-generation technology to customers. VoLTE is an evolution of voice call technology. We have been placing voice calls on the 2G and 3G network for years now and it’s a natural shift that we’re bring the higher capacity of our 4G network to offer customers a higher quality call experience.”

“We have been working hard to bring innovation to the market and VoLTE is one of the many things we have in the pipeline for our customers. This is yet another step forward as we move towards our ambition of becoming our customers’ favourite partner in digital life,” said Digi’s Chief Marketing Officer, Loh Keh Jiat.

[adrotate banner=”4″]

To enjoy these new features, which come at no additional cost, both devices making and receiving the call must be VoLTE-capable with the feature switched on and with both customers located within Digi’s 4G LTE coverage area. Digi’s 4G LTE network now reaches 78% of Malaysians nationwide in 225 major cities and towns making it widely accessible for those with the appropriate devices to enjoy an improved call quality.

Digi customers who bought the newly launched iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be among the first to experience VoLTE as the smartphone comes equipped for it. Customers with earlier versions of the iPhone, including the iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, 6, 6 Plus and SE will also be able to enjoy VoLTE calls as long as they’ve upgraded their iOS version to 10.1 and activated VoLTE from the device settings. VoLTE capability in devices from other manufacturers will be rolled out soon in stages.

Meanwhile, customers with devices that are not VoLTE-capable need not worry as there are no changes to the way they enjoy Digi’s voice calls.
