Dell 40-Nation Survey : Employees Are Greatest Asset!

Dell Technologies just conducted a new 40+ country survey to find out things have changed after two years of accelerated digital transformation!

Take a look at their results, and find out why most businesses consider employees as their greatest asset!

Dell 40-Nation Survey : Employees Are Greatest Asset!

After two years of accelerated digital transformation during the COVID-19 pandemic, 64% of IT leaders in Malaysia (APJ: 45%; Global: 50%) say their organisations know what it takes to digitally transform a workforce.

But after such rapid change, many employees now face the challenge of maintaining the pace. What’s more, more than two-thirds of the 10,500 respondents believe that their organisations are not able to engage with their employees properly when planning transformation programs.

The results suggest that after 2 years rapid transformation, businesses and their workforce are in need of time to recharge, reflect and refine before embarking on new or iterating projects.

The research also highlights how there is still the danger os digital transformation stalling, as 68% of Malaysian respondents (APJ: 72%; Global: 64%) believe that their employees’ resistance to change can lead to failure.

Over half or 57% of Malaysian respondents (APJ: 62%; Global: 53%)  fear that they will be shut-out of the rapidly-evolving digital world due to a lack of people with the right authority or vision to capitalise on opportunities offered by new technologies, like as-a-Service models.

Most organisations around the world – including Malaysia – realise the need to digitally transform, but they find digital transformation hard, and their people don’t always embrace change.

This human-technology friction is only compounded by the pandemic and what we end up with is businesses that are more digitally resilient, but many of their people are exhausted.

Today, businesses aspiring for sustainable success need to be asking themselves how they can thoughtfully and purposefully help their people navigate further change.

Dell 40-Nation Survey : Readiness For Digital Change

Dell and independent behavioural experts also studied survey respondents’ appetite for digital change, and they found that only 8% of the Malaysian workforce – from senior business leaders to IT decision-makers and staff – are pursuing modernisation projects (APJ: 7%; Global: 10%).

Furthermore, 40% of Malaysian respondents are slow or reluctant to embrace change (APJ: 46%; Global: 42%).

Breakthrough Benchmark Malaysia APJ Global
Sprint: Will chase innovation and
trailblaze technological change.
8% 7% 10%
Steady: Poised to adopt technological
change, selected by others.
50% 41% 43%
Slow: Inclined to hold back and
observe / deliberate.
40% 46% 42%
Still: Tend to anticipate problems and
resist proposed technology innovations
based on perceived risk.
4% 6% 5%

Dell 40-Nation Survey : The Way Forward

The Dell study also charts a way forward for businesses to focus on keeping pace with digital transformation:

1. Connectivity

Businesses performed tremendous feats to connect, collaborate, and conduct business online during the pandemic, but the job is not done.

Around 76% of Malaysian respondents say they need their organisations to provide the necessary tools and infrastructure to work anywhere (along with the autonomy to choose their preferred working pattern) (APJ: 78%; Global: 72%).

In fact, they worry their employees might be left behind because they do not have the right technology to shift to a highly distributed model (where work and compute are not tied to a central place, but occur everywhere).

Technology alone is not enough. Businesses also need to make work equitable for employees with different needs, interests, and responsibilities, including the 82% Malaysian employees (APJ: 78; Global: 76%) that would like their organisation to do any of the following:

  • Clearly define their ongoing commitment to flexible work arrangements and the practicalities of making it work – Malaysia: 54% (APJ: 46%; Global: 40%)
  • Equip leaders to effectively and equitably manage remote teams – Malaysia: 41% (APJ: 42%; Global: 42%)
  • Empower employees to choose their preferred working pattern and provide the necessary tools / infrastructure – Malaysia: 49% (APJ: 47%; Global: 44%)

2. Productivity

Every employee’s time is limited and there are now too few qualified candidates for open roles. To address these limitations, businesses can delegate repetitive tasks to automated processes and free-up employees to focus on higher-value work.

At present, 19% of Malaysian respondents say that their work is stimulating and not repetitive (APJ: 32%; Global: 37%). With the opportunity to automate more repetitive tasks, 81% of Malaysian respondents would look forward to learning new, sought-after skills and technologies, like leadership skills, courses in machine learning, or focusing on more strategic opportunities to elevate their role (APJ: 74%; Global; 69%).

However, businesses with limited budgets are concerned they will not be able to advance their workforce and compete.

3. Empathy

At their heart, businesses must build a culture, modelled by empathetic leaders, that treats people as their greatest source of creativity and value.

The research shows there is still work to do and empathy has to inform decision making – from simplifying technology for approximately half (Malaysia: 51%; APJ: 52%; Global: 49%) who often feel overwhelmed by complex technologies, to tailoring change programs to individuals’ skills (Malaysia: 54%; APJ: 50%; Global: 41%;) of employees believe their leaders do this).

Dell 40-Nation Survey : A Quick Primer

To find out how things have changed after two years of accelerated digital transformation, Dell Technologies conducted a survey across 40+ countries from all regions of the world, from August to October 2021.

Fieldwork was conducted by Vanson Bourne, and involved 10,500 senior business decision-makers, IT decision-makers and knowledge workers (employees involved in digital transformation).

In Asia Pacific & Japan (APJ), 2,900 respondents across 11 locations were surveyed. The APJ locations include Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam. In Malaysia, 200 number of respondents were surveyed.

On 22 September 2022, Dell Technologies presented their key findings at the Dell Technologies Forum 2022, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Jeff Clarke : Tech Predictions For 2020 + Next Data Decade!

Dell Technologies COO and Vice Chairman, Jeff Clarke, reveals his tech predictions for 2020, the start of what Dell Technologies considers as the Next Data Decade!

Jeff Clarke : Tech Predictions For 2020 + Next Data Decade!

It’s hard to believe that we’re heading into the year 2020 – a year that many have marked as a milestone in technology. Autonomous cars lining our streets, virtual assistants predicting our needs and taking our requests, connected and intelligent everything across every industry.

When I stop to think about what has been accomplished over the last decade – it’s quite remarkable.  While we don’t have fully autonomous cars zipping back and forth across major freeways with ease, automakers are getting closer to deploying autonomous fleets in the next few years.

Many of the every-day devices, systems and applications we use are connected and intelligent – including healthcare applications, industrial machines and financial systems – forming what is now deemed as “the edge.”

At the root of all that innovation and advancement are massive amounts of data and compute power, and the capacity across edge, cloud and core data center infrastructure to put data through its paces. And with the amount of data coming our way in the next 10 years – we can only imagine what the world around us will look like in 2030, with apps and services we haven’t even thought of yet.

2020 marks the beginning of what we at Dell Technologies are calling the Next Data Decade, and we are no doubt entering this era with new – and rather high – expectations of what technology can make possible for how we live, work and play. So what new breakthroughs and technology trends will set the tone for what’s to come over the next 10 years? Here are my top predictions for the year ahead.

2020 proves it’s time to keep IT simple

We’ve got a lot of data on our hands…big data, meta data, structured and unstructured data – data living in clouds, in devices at the edge, in core data centers…it’s everywhere. But organisations are struggling to ensure the right data is moving to the right place at the right time. They lack data visibility – the ability for IT teams to quickly access and analyse the right data – because there are too many systems and services woven throughout their IT infrastructure. As we kick off 2020, CIOs will make data visibility a top IT imperative because after all, data is what makes the flywheel of innovation spin.

We’ll see organisations accelerate their digital transformation by simplifying and automating their IT infrastructure and consolidating systems and services into holistic solutions that enable more control and clarity. Consistency in architectures, orchestration and service agreements will open new doors for data management – and that ultimately gives data the ability be used as part of AI and Machine Learning to fuel IT automation.  And all of that enables better, faster business outcomes that the innovation of the next decade will thrive on.

Cloud co-existence sees rolling thunder

The idea that public and private clouds can and will co-exist becomes a clear reality in 2020. Multi-cloud IT strategies supported by hybrid cloud architectures will play a key role in ensuing organisations have better data management and visibility, while also ensuring that their data remains accessible and secure.  In fact, IDC predicted that by 2021, over 90% of enterprises worldwide will rely on a mix of on-premises/dedicated private clouds, several public clouds, and legacy platforms to meet their infrastructure needs.

But private clouds won’t simply exist within the heart of the data center. As 5G and edge deployments continue to rollout, private hybrid clouds will exist at the edge to ensure the real-time visibility and management of data everywhere it lives.

That means organisations will expect more of their cloud and service providers to ensure they can support their hybrid cloud demands across all environments. Further, we’ll see security and data protection become deeply integrated as part of hybrid cloud environments, notably where containers and Kubernetes continue to gain momentum for app development. Bolting security measures onto cloud infrastructure will be a non-starter…it’s got to be inherently built into the fiber of the overall data management strategy edge to core to cloud.

What you get is what you pay

One of the biggest hurdles for IT decision makers driving transformation is resources. CapEx and OpEx can often be limiting factors when trying to plan and predict for compute and consumption needs for the year ahead…never mind the next three-five years. SaaS and cloud consumption models have increased in adoption and popularity, providing organisations with the flexibility to pay for what they use, as they go.

In 2020, flexible consumption and as-a-service options will accelerate rapidly as organisations seize the opportunity to transform into software-defined and cloud-enabled IT. As a result – they’ll be able to choose the right economic model for their business to take advantage of end-to-end IT solutions that enable data mobility and visibility, and crunch even the most intensive AI and Machine Learning workloads when needed.

“The Edge” rapidly expands into the enterprise

The “Edge” continues to evolve – with many working hard to define exactly what it is and where it exists.   Once limited to the Internet of Things (IoT), it’s hard to find any systems, applications, services – people and places – that aren’t connected. The edge is emerging in many places and it’s going to expand with enterprise organisations leading the way, delivering the IT infrastructure to support it.

5G connectivity is creating new use cases and possibilities for healthcare, financial services, education and industrial manufacturing. As a result, SD-WAN and software-defined networking solutions become a core thread of a holistic IT infrastructure solution – ensuring massive data workloads can travel at speed – securely – between edge, core and cloud environments. Open networking solutions will prevail over proprietary as organisations recognise the only way to successfully manage and secure data for the long haul requires the flexibility and agility that only open software defined networking can deliver.

Intelligent devices change the way you work and collaborate

PC innovation continues to push new boundaries every year – screens are more immersive and bigger than ever, yet the form factor becomes smaller and thinner. But more and more, it’s what is running at the heart of that PC that is more transformational than ever. Software applications that use AI and machine learning create systems that now know where and when to optimise power and compute based on your usage patterns. With biometrics, PCs know it’s you from the moment you gaze at the screen. And now, AI and machine learning applications are smart enough to give your system the ability to dial up the sound and colour based on the content you’re watching or the game you’re playing.

Over the next year, these advancements in AI and machine learning will turn our PCs into even smarter and more collaborative companions. They’ll have the ability to optimise power and battery life for our most productive moments – and even become self-sufficient machines that can self-heal and self-advocate for repair – reducing the burden on the user and of course, reducing the number of IT incidents filed. That’s a huge increase in happiness and productivity for both the end users and the IT groups that support them.

Innovating with integrity, sourcing sustainably

Sustainable innovation will continue to take center stage, as organisations like ours want to ensure the impact they have in the world doesn’t come with a dangerous one on the planet. Greater investments in reuse and recycling for closed-loop innovation will accelerate – hardware becomes smaller and more efficient and built with recycled and reclaimed goods – minimising eWaste and maximising already existing materials. At Dell Technologies, we met our Legacy of Good 2020 goals ahead of schedule – so we’ve retired them and set new goals for 2030 to recycle an equivalent product for every product a customer buys, lead the circular economy with more than half of all product content being made from recycled or renewable material, and use 100% recycled or renewable material in all packaging.

As we enter the Next Data Decade, I’m optimistic and excited about what the future holds. The steps our customers will take in the next year to get the most out of their data will set forth new breakthroughs in technology that everyone will experience in some way – whether it’s a more powerful device, faster medical treatment, more accessible education, less waste and cleaner air. And before we know it, we’ll be looking forward to what the following 10 years will have in store.

Dell Forecasts The Future of Connected Living In 2030!

Dell Technologies just shared with us the key findings from their research that explore the future of connected living by the year 2030!

Find out how emerging technologies will transform how our lives will change by the year 2030!

Dell On The Future of Connected Living In 2030!

Dell Technologies conducted their research in partnership with the Institute for the Future (IFTF) and Vanson Bourne, surveying 1,100 business leaders across ten countries in Asia Pacific and Japan.

Let’s take a look at their key findings, and find out why they believe the future is brimming with opportunity thanks to emerging technologies.

Technological Shifts Transforming The Future By 2030

IFTF and a forum of global experts forecast that emerging technologies like edge computing, 5G, AI, Extended Reality (XR) and IoT will create these five major shifts in society :

1. Networked Reality

Over the next decade, the line between the virtual and the real will vanish. Cyberspace will become an overlay on top of our existing reality as our digital environment extends beyond televisions, smartphones and other displays.

This transformation will be driven by the deployment of 5G networks that enable high bandwidth, low-latency connections for streaming, interactive services, and multi-user media content.

2. Connected Mobility and Networked Matter

The vehicles of tomorrow will essentially be mobile computers, with the transportation system resembling packet-switched networks that power the Internet.

We will trust them to take us where we need to go in the physical world as we interact in the virtual spaces available to us wherever we are.

3. From Digital Cities to Sentient Cities

More than half of the world’s population live in urban areas. This will increase to 68% over the next three decades, according to the United Nations.

This level of growth presents both huge challenges and great opportunities for businesses, governments and citizens.

Cities will quite literally come to life through their own networked infrastructure of smart objects, self-reporting systems and AI-powered analytics.

4. Agents and Algorithms

Our 2030 future will see everyone supported by a highly personalised “operating system for living” that is able to anticipate our needs and proactively support our day-to-day activities to free up time.

Such a Life Operating System (Life OS) will be context-aware, anticipating our needs and behaving proactively.

Instead of interacting with different apps today, the intelligent agent of the future will understand what you need and liaise with various web services, other bots and networked objects to get the job done.

5. Robot with Social Lives

Within 10 years, we will have personal robots that will become our partners in life – enhancing our skills and extending our abilities.

In some cases, they will replace us, but this can mean freeing us to do the things we are good at, and enjoy.

In most cases, they can become our collaborators, helping to crowdsource innovations and accelerate progress through robot social networks.

Preparing For The Future Of Connected Living By 2030

Anticipating Change

Many businesses in APJ are already preparing for these shifts, with business leaders expressing these perceptions :

  • 80% (82% in Malaysia) will restructure the way they spend their time by automating more tasks
  • 70% (83% in Malaysia) welcome people partnering with machines/robots to surpass our human limitations
  • More than half of businesses anticipate Networked Reality becoming commonplace
    – 63% (67% in Malaysia) say they welcome day-to-day immersion in virtual and augmented realities
    – 62% (63% in Malaysia) say they welcome people being fitted with brain computer interfaces

Navigating Challenges

These technological shifts are seismic in nature, leaving people and organisations grappling with change. Organisations that want to harness these emerging technologies will need to collect, process and make use of the data, while addressing public concerns about data privacy.

APJ business leaders are already anticipating some of these challenges :

  • 78% (88% in Malaysia) will be more concerned about their own privacy by 2030 than they are today
  • 74% (83% in Malaysia) consider data privacy to be a top societal-scale challenge that must be solved
  • 49% (56% in Malaysia) would welcome self-aware machines
  • 49% (43% in Malaysia) call for regulation and clarity on how AI is used
  • 84% (85% in Malaysia) believe that digital transformation should be more widespread throughout their organisation

Progress Made Real : The New Dell Social Impact 2030 Vision!

After releasing the final report for their 2020 Legacy of Good plan, Dell Technologies unveiled their new 2030 social impact vision – Progress Made Real.

Here is a summary of what Dell intends to advance beyond 2020…

2020 Legacy Of Good : A Roadmap To 2030

The 2020 Legacy of Good plan set a strong foundation for Dell Technologies’ new 2030 social impact vision, Progress Made Real, which focuses in on three key areas :

  • advancing sustainability,
  • cultivating inclusion, and
  • transforming lives with technology.

Dell Technologies shared with us a broad outline of what they have already started, and are seeking to achieve.

Progress Made Real : Advancing Sustainability

Looking toward 2030, Dell Technologies will continue to accelerate the circular economy, reduce the impact of Dell’s operations, support customers’ efforts to reduce environmental impacts, and champion the many people who build their products.

  • After a successful e-waste tracker pilot in partnership with Basel Action Network (BAN), Dell Technologies now makes global tracking technologies part of its existing electronics disposition partner audit program.
The pilot program revealed some vulnerabilities in the downstream recycling process, which helped Dell Technologies to quickly take corrective action to address the operational gap.

  • Dell recently launched a process to use recycled material, Polyvinyl Butyral (rPVB), from car windshields to create the protective, waterproof lining of Dell laptop bags and backpacks.
Dell is also using an innovative method of solution dyeing for these backpacks, which results in 90% less wastewater and 29% less energy, while generating 62% fewer CO2 emissions compared to typical piece-dyeing.
The first bags and backpacks with rPVB began shipping in February and are forecasted to avoid approximately 74,000 pounds of landfill waste per month.

  • In partnership with suppliers Seagate and Teleplan (a storage device recycling / recovery specialist), Dell identified a new closed-loop process to recover the rare earth magnets from recovered enterprise equipment.
The magnets are reformed for reuse in new hard-disk drives. In the initial pilot program, we are using the reformed magnets in 25,000 Seagate hard drives for our Dell Latitude 5000 series laptop.
Reusing rare earth metals helps us avoid the need to mine the earth, which can cause environmental damage and health concerns for local communities.

Progress Made Real : Cultivating Inclusion

In the midst of a talent shortage, closing the diversity gap is critical to meeting future talent needs and for reflecting new perspectives of a global customer base.

Dell Technologies is actively building on several non-traditional hiring program pilots to broaden the company’s talent pipeline. Pilots include:

  • The neurodiversity hiring program provides training and possible full-time career opportunities for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
In partnership with HMEA, The Arc of the Capital Area and Neurodiverisity in the Workplace, Dell Technologies’ program removes barriers that may limit an individual from showcasing their true abilities and potential during the typical job interview process. The pilot expanded from Massachusetts to Texas in April, 2019.

  • Re-entry programs like Dell Career Restart offer a re-entry experience for individuals who have been out of the workforce for a year or more, and leverages their previous career experience in a supportive environment. The company launched pilots in the U.S. and India.
  • Skilling and re-skilling programs include Dell Technologies’ partnership with Northeastern University’s AlignProgram, which enables students from diverse backgrounds to transition into a technology career through intensive coursework to earn a master’s degree in computer science. Project Immersion provides undergraduates at Minority Serving Institutions and Historically Black Colleges & Universities with skills for the digital future.
Additionally, Dell Technologies’ distance education Laboratory for People with Disabilities (LE@D) online learning platform, teaches technology-based vocational skills to individuals with motor, hearing or other disabilities in Brazil.

Dell Technologies is also committed to addressing systemic challenges with diversity and inclusion. The company advocates for inclusive public policies and is a member of strategic coalitions like CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion, and was also a founding member of the Reboot Representation Tech Coalition.

Progress Made Real : Transforming Lives with Technology

Harnessing the power of technology enables limitless possibilities for advancing human progress and solving complex societal challenges. Dell Technologies is committed to applying its portfolio and partnerships to create a future capable of fully realizing human potential.

  • Dell Technologies continued to expand its solar learning labs to help bridge the educational gap in areas that lack access to consistent energy and technology in partnership with Computer Aid International.
These labs are created by transforming shipping containers into classrooms with Dell Wyse Thin Client workstations managed by an air-cooled PowerEdge server for up to 20 students.
With solar panels to generate electricity, the container can be deployed in remote locations.
Dell Technologies has already funded 18 labs in six countries around the world. Microsoft has recently joined in this collaborative effort, awarding Computer Aid with a Technology for Social Impact grant to further provide technology access through the solar learning labs.

  • To fight pediatric cancer, Dell Technologies’ donated $30 million dollars over 6 years to Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) through a partnership designed to use technology solutions and employee volunteerism.
Through Dell’s technology, TGen increased computational hours by almost 4x, allowing researchers and doctors to identify treatments faster, by turning a patient’s vast DNA and RNA sequencing data into insights.

Progress Made Real : Upholding Ethics & Privacy

Dell Technologies believes that ethics and privacy play a critical role in establishing a strong foundation for positive social impact.

In this time of rapid innovation, big data, an evolving regulatory environment, and increasing expectations from both their own team members and customers, Dell Technologies is committed to leadership in ethics and privacy.

This commitment to continually push to higher ethics and privacy standards will be a guidepost for their Progress Made Real work.

Pat Gelsinger Reveals 2019 VMware Strategy + Plans!

On the second day of Dell Technologies World 2019, VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger shared his 2019 vision for VMware. Here is a sneak peek at the 2019 VMware strategy and plans!

Pat Gelsinger Reveals 2019 VMware Strategy + Plans!

VMware was a major force at Dell Technologies World 2019, demonstrating VMware’s great importance in the Dell Technologies family.

They announced amongst other things, Dell Unified Workspace which is based on VMware Workspace ONE, Dell Technologies Cloud in collaboration with Dell EMC, VMware Cloud on Dell EMC, and Azure VMware Solutions in collaboration with Microsoft.

But that was not all, as Pat Gelsinger would soon reveal…

Pat Gelsinger Reveals 2019 VMware Strategy + Plans!

VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger comes from a “hardware” background, serving as Intel’s first Chief Technology Officer before taking over as President and CEO of EMC.

A point he makes in his talk about the Superpowers of Tech – Cloud, Mobile, AI/ML and Edge/IoT.

  • VMware’s vision still focuses on enabling any cloud resource and application, from the past or the present, to work on any device, while improving intrinsic security over time.
  • The hybrid cloud is the best answer for almost every single workload, because of three “laws” – the laws of physics, the laws of economics, and the laws of the land.
  • VMware and Dell Technologies are focusing on the hybrid cloud architecture with VxRail as its building block.
  • To bind together and manage disparate cloud and on-premise solutions with greater visibility, VMware is offering CloudHealth on all VMware Cloud solutions on Amazon, Azure and Google.
  • VMware is making great investments into Kubernetes as the “middleware for the cloud“.
  • VMware is partnering with Pivotal to make VMware PKS available as VMware Enterprise PKS, VMware Essential PKS and VMware Cloud PKS.
  • VMware is also rebuilding their security architecture and products, with AppDefense and vSphere Platinum, giving virtual machines an AI capability to learn the users’ behaviour, as well as end-to-end encryption throughout the network infrastructure.
  • The newly-announced Dell Unified Workspace leverages VMware’s Workspace ONE unified endpoint management to maintain the user’s devices in good health, while allowing them to seamlessly access any native, SaaS (Software as a Service), or internal application, with a single sign-on from any device.

The Human-Machine Partnership by Erik Brynjolfsson + Rana el Kaliouby

At the Dell Technologies World 2019, we were lucky enough to snag a seat at the talk by MIT Professor Erik Brynjolfsson; and MIT alumni and Affectiva CEO, Rana el Kaliouby, on human-machine partnership.

We managed to record the incredibly insightful session for everyone who could not make it for this exclusive guru session. This is a video you must not miss!

The DTW 2019 Guru Sessions

One of the best reasons to attend Dell Technologies World 2019 are the guru sessions. If you are lucky enough to reserve a seat, you will have the opportunity to listen to some of the world’s most brilliant thinkers and doers.

The Human-Machine Partnership

The talk on human-machine partnership by Professor Brynjolfsson and Ms. Rana was the first of several guru sessions at Dell Technologies World 2019.

Entitled “How Emerging Technologies & Human Machine Partnerships Will Transform the Economy“, it focused on how technology changed human society, and what the burgeoning efforts in artificial intelligence will mean for humanity.

Here are the key points from their guru session on the human-machine partnership :

Erik Brynjolfsson (00:05 to 22:05) on the Human-Machine Partnership

  • You cannot replace old technologies with new technologies, without rethinking the organisation or institution.
  • We are now undergoing a triple revolution
    – a rebalancing of mind and machine through Big Data and Artificial Intelligence
    – a shift from products to (digital) platforms
    – a shift from the core to crowd-based decision making
  • Shifting to data-driven decision-making based on Big Data results in higher productivity and greater profitability.
  • Since 2015, computers can now recognise objects better than humans, thanks to rapid advances in machine learning.
  • Even machine-based speech recognition has become as accurate as humans from 2017 onwards.
  • While new AI capabilities are opening up new possibilities in many fields, they are also drastically reducing or eliminating the need for humans.
  • Unlike platforms of the past, the new digital networks leverage “two-sided networks“. In many cases, one network is used to subsidise the other network, or make it free-to-use.
  • Shifting to crowd-based decision-making introduces diversity in the ways of thinking, gaining new perspectives and breakthroughs in problem-solving.
  • Digital innovations have greatly expanded the economy, but it doesn’t mean that everyone will benefit. In fact, there has been a great decoupling between the productivity and median income of the American worker in the past few decades.

Rana el Kaliouby (22:08 to 45:05) on the Human-Machine Partnership

  • Human communication is mostly conveyed indirectly – 93% is non-verbal. Half of that are facial expression and gestures, the other half is vocal intonation.
  • Affectiva has the world’s largest emotion repository, with 5 billion frames of 8 million faces from 87 countries.
  • Facial expressions are largely universal, but there is a need diversity of their data to avoid bias in their models. For example, there are gender differences that vary by culture.
  • They use computer vision, machine learning and deep learning to create an Emotional AI model that learns from all those facial expressions to accurately determine a person’s emotions.
  • Emotional artificial intelligence has many real-world or potential uses
    – detecting dangerous driving, allowing for proactive measures to be taken
    – personalising the ride in a future robot-taxi or autonomous car
    – the creation of more engaging and effective social robots in retail and hospitality industries
    – help autistic children understand how facial expressions correspond to emotions, and learn social cues.

Erik Brynjolfsson + Rana el Kaliouby

Professor Erik Brynjolfsson holds many hats. He is currently :

  • Professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management,
  • Director of the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy,
  • Director of the MIT Center for Digital Business, and
  • Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research

Rana el Kaliouby was formerly a computer scientist at MIT, helping to form their Autism & Communication Technology Initiative. She currently serves as CEO of Affectiva, a spin-off from MIT’s Media Lab that focuses on emotion recognition technology.

The 2019 Microsoft – Dell Partnership

Dell Technologies and Microsoft have been partners for a long time now, but at Dell Technologies World 2019, they announced that they were expanding their partnership in a number of digital transformation solutions.

Let’s take a look at what the components of the 2019 Microsoft – Dell partnership…

Azure VMware Solutions – VMware On Azure!

For the first time ever, Microsoft will offer VMware on Azure! The new Azure VMware Solutions are built on VMware Cloud Foundation, and deployed in Azure.

This would allow companies to capitalise on VMware’s trusted cloud infrastructure and the mission-critical performance of Microsoft Azure.

Hybrid Cloud Connectivity

With Azure VMware Solutions, customers will be able to seamlessly migrate, extend and run existing VMware workloads from on-premises environments to Microsoft Azure without the need to re-architect applications or retool operations.

They will also be able to build, run, manage, and secure new and existing applications across VMware environments and Microsoft Azure, while extending a single model for operations based on established tools, skills and processes as part of a hybrid cloud strategy.

Tapping Into Azure Capabilities

Azure VMware Solutions enable organisations to tap into Azure’s scale, security and fast provisioning cycles to innovate and modernise applications while also improving performance.

By integrating with native Azure services, customers can easily infuse advanced capabilities like AI, Machine Learning, and IoT into their applications enabling new, intelligent experiences.

Metal-as-a-Service

Azure VMware Solutions are first-party services from Microsoft developed in collaboration with VMware Cloud Verified partners CloudSimple and Virtustream (a Dell Technologies company).

Both CloudSimple and Virtustream run the latest VMware software-defined data center technology.

This ensures that customers enjoy the same benefits of a consistent infrastructure and consistent operations in the cloud as they achieve in their own physical data center, while allowing customers to also access the capabilities of Microsoft Azure.

VMware Cloud on Dell EMC – Delivered By Dell, Managed By VMware!

At Dell Technologies World 2019, VMware and Dell Technologies jointly announced VMware Cloud on Dell EMC.

Find out how this new DCaaS platform combines the benefits of public cloud and on-premise security, control and performance, with a subscription model!

VMware Cloud on Dell EMC Unveiled At Dell Technologies World 2019

The new VMware Cloud on Dell EMC is a cloud service that combines the attributes of public cloud – economics, simplicity and agility; with on-premise security, control and performance.

This is a Data Center-as-a-Service (DCaaS) offering that lets organisations manage and maintain infrastructure like a public cloud service, in data center and edge environments.

First previewed as Project Dimension at VMworld 2018, VMware Cloud on Dell EMC combines Dell EMC VxRail hyper-converged infrastructure with VMware’s compute, storage and networking infrastructure.

It differs from Dell Technologies Cloud (also announced at the same time), by delivering and managing all of the infrastructure on-premise, or at the edge.

VMware Cloud On Dell EMC – Delivered By Dell, Managed By VMware!

The first thing to note is that VMware Cloud on Dell EMC is a VMware service. Dell EMC only provides and deploys the necessary hardware on-premise or at the edge, after which VMware takes over management and maintenance of the entire infrastructure.

VMware will be the single point of contact for the customer, who will have visibility to their entire system and track the steps undertaken by VMware engineers to resolve service issues.

As this is a subscription-based DCaaS model, the initial startup cost is significantly lowered. VMware is expected to offer flexible consumption and payment options.

VMware Cloud On Dell EMC Key Benefits

Simpler Operational Processes

End-to-end management of data and edge infrastructure will be greatly simplified, including :

  • one-click hardware ordering
  • initial deployment
  • automated patching, upgrades of software and hardware
  • monitoring and remediation
  • global view of infrastructures on all premise locations

Consistency in operations across cloud, data centre and edge

VMware Cloud on Dell EMC promises to offer a consistent compute, storage and networking infrastructure, with consistent cloud management. It will allow organisations to more affordably tackle issues like :

  • data centre and edge location modernisation
  • global and local data latencies
  • sovereignty-sensitive workloads

VMware Cloud on Dell EMC will be able to connect to, and manage, public cloud services, but will maintain applications on its own infrastructure. The organisation will own and be responsible for its own data which is available on-premise at data centres or edge locations.

Security Across Data Centre And Edge Locations

The micro-segmentation capabilities of VMware NSX provides extra security for both traditional and modern applications. Data at-rest and data in-transit are also protected by encryption.

VMware Cloud on Dell EMC Availability

VMware Cloud on Dell EMC is currently in beta testing.

VMware is expected to make it available in the U.S. in the second half of 2019.

Dell Technologies Cloud Primer – Simpler, Better Hybrid Cloud!

One of the first big announcements on the first day of Dell Technologies World 2019 was the introduction of the Dell Technologies Cloud, with a new VMware Cloud on Dell EMC option.

Here is a quick primer on the two options, and how they will offer simpler and better hybrid cloud management!

Dell Technologies Cloud

This is a new set of cloud infrastructure solutions that leverages VMware and Dell EMC technologies to deliver a consistent hybrid cloud management platform.

This lets customers reduce the complexity of managing multiple cloud services – public cloud, private cloud and the edge – regardless of location.

Dell is also offering it as a Data Center-as-a-Service (DCaaS), in the form of VMware Cloud on Dell EMC. This introduces the public cloud delivery model to on-premises and edge locations.

A Simpler + Better Cloud Experience

The Dell Technologies Cloud portfolio consists of the new Dell Technologies Cloud Platforms and the new Data Center-as-a-Service (DCaaS) offering, VMware Cloud on Dell EMC.

They will both enable a flexible range of IT and management options with tight integration and a single vendor experience for purchasing, deployment, services and financing.

More importantly, they will offer a consistent cloud experience across all cloud types and more than 4,200 VMware Cloud Provider Program providers and hyperscalers.

This hybrid cloud approach is delivered through a powerful integration of hardware, software, services and consumption options from Dell Technologies and VMware. Organisations deploying Dell Technologies Cloud can:

  • Increase agility
Employ familiar VMware tools to provision, govern, automate and orchestrate applications across multiple cloud deployment options.
This gives organisations workload placement flexibility through a single operational hub across public, private and edge clouds, backed by a broad, global network of cloud service providers.
  • Accelerate innovation
Adopt a simple and quick path to deploy hybrid cloud.
With VMware Cloud Foundation now available natively on Dell EMC VxRail, it offers the industry’s first jointly-engineered, hybrid cloud infrastructure stack tightly integrated with VMware’s flexible, full stack HCI architecture.
Customers can also opt to extend the cloud experience on-premises by deploying Dell EMC VxBlock 1000 converged infrastructure and Dell Technologies validated storage, compute and networking options.
  • Improve cloud economics
Manage applications seamlessly across various clouds while saving time and cost by eliminating unnecessary application re-platforming.
Organisations also can align how they pay for IT with how they do business through a range of options to buy, rent or consume IT as a service through Dell Financial Services.
IDC research found that Dell Technologies Cloud can reduce total cost of ownership by up to 47% compared to native public cloud.
  • Help reduce business risk
Enhance confidence in operations through the delivery of IT services backed by built-in security and automated lifecycle management.

VMware Cloud on Dell EMC for Data Center and the Edge

First previewed as Project Dimension at VMworld 2018, VMware Cloud on Dell EMC combines Dell EMC VxRail with core technology from VMware.

This Data Center-as-a-Service (DCaaS) offering enables organisations to consume infrastructure, like a public cloud service, in data center and edge environments. This lets IT organisations eliminate the need for basic tasks, such as infrastructure management and maintenance, with subscription-based pricing.

VMware Cloud on Dell EMC also offers a bi-directional connection to public clouds for application and data portability via a hybrid cloud control plane.

Data Center-as-a-Service Model

Delivered in a Data Center-as-a-Service model for their on-premises environments, VMware Cloud on Dell EMC is co-engineered and delivered by Dell Technologies with the ongoing service fully managed by VMware.

This means organisations can leave infrastructure management, troubleshooting and maintenance to VMware, and instead focus on their core business activities.

They also can take advantage of enterprise-grade data services, security and resiliency, built into the solution, and provision add-on services such as backup, disaster-recovery and bursting capabilities.

Dell Technologies Cloud Availability

  • Dell Technologies Cloud Platforms are available globally now.
  • The Data Center-as-a-Service option, delivered as VMware Cloud on Dell EMC with VxRail, is currently available in beta deployments with limited customer availability planned for the second half of 2019.

2018 Dell DT Index For Malaysia Reveals Uphill Struggle

At an exclusive briefing today, Dell Technologies revealed their DT Index findings for Malaysia, with a very sobering picture of an uphill struggle for the digital transformation of Malaysian businesses going forward.

What Is The Dell DT Index?

The DT Index is short for the Dell Technologies Digital Transformation Index. Conducted by independent research company, Vanson Bourne, and in collaboration with Intel, the DT Index maps the digital transformation progress of mid- to large-sized companies, and looks at the confidence of their leaders in digitally transforming their companies.

The DT Index’s calculations are based on the surveyed companies’ perceived performance in the following areas :

  • delivering against the core attributes of a digital business
  • their existing IT strategy
  • their workforce transformation strategy
  • their planned investments

The 2018 Dell DT Index For Malaysia Briefing

KT Ong, Country Manager of Dell EMC Malaysia, gave us the key findings of the 2018 Dell DT Index for Malaysia.

Here are the 2018 Dell DT Index’s key findings

  • Only 21% of Malaysian businesses have a clear digital plan and strategy in place; a mere 3% are Digital Leaders
  • One in two Malaysian businesses (51%) are worried they’ll struggle to meet changing customer demands; fear their organisation will get left behind (48%) – all within five years
  • A large percentage (41%) have very few digital investments, with a further 10% lacking a digital plan completely.
  • Business leaders identify lack of budget and resources as the biggest barrier to digital transformation

It’s not all bad news though. Malaysian businesses in the study plan to invest in many digital technologies over the next one to three years :

[adrotate group=”2″]
  • 56% intend to invest in cybersecurity
  • 50% intend to invest in IoT technologies
  • 39% intend to invest in multi-cloud
  • 35% intend to invest in Artificial Intelligence
  • 33% intend to invest in a compute-centric approach to datacenter design and workload enablement / optimisation

In short – while businesses in Malaysia have been slow in digitally transforming themselves, they see a need for that and will be investing to do more in the near future.

Dell EMC Infrastructure Solutions Business

Austin, Texas, 7 September 2016 – Dell Technologies today announced completion of the acquisition of EMC Corporation, creating Dell EMC – a unique family of businesses that provides the essential infrastructure for organizations to build their digital future, transform IT and protect their most important asset, information.

This combination creates a $74 billion market leader with an expansive technology portfolio that solves complex problems for customers in the industry’s fast-growing areas of hybrid cloud, software-defined data center, converged infrastructure, platform-as-a-service, data analytics, mobility and cybersecurity.

Dell EMC

Dell Technologies serves 98 percent of the Fortune 500 and comprises several market leading businesses. The two largest, and most well-known, are the Dell client solutions business and the Dell EMC infrastructure solutions business – both of which are supported by Dell EMC Services. In addition, Dell Technologies contains Boomi, Pivotal, RSA, SecureWorks, Virtustream and VMware.

This unique structure combines the focus and innovation of a startup with the global scale and service of a large enterprise. Dell Technologies’ scale will enable it to deliver more innovation and investment in R&D, sales and marketing, services and support and deliver more efficient and cost-effective solutions for customers.

Furthermore, while the company will publicly report its financial results, it is privately controlled, enabling it to better focus investments on its customer and partner ecosystem over the long term.

Michael Dell, chairman and CEO of Dell Technologies, said, “We are at the dawn of the next industrial revolution. Our world is becoming more intelligent and more connected by the minute, and ultimately will become intertwined with a vast Internet of Things, paving the way for our customers to do incredible things. This is why we created Dell Technologies. We have the products, services, talent and global scale to be a catalyst for change and guide customers, large and small, on their digital journey.”

Dell Technologies blends Dell’s go-to-market strength with small business and mid-market customers and EMC’s strength with large enterprises and stands as a market leader in many of the most important and high-growth areas of the $2 trillion information technology market, including positions as a “Leader” in 20 Gartner Magic Quadrants and a portfolio of more than 20,000 patents and applications.
